"This isn't my apartment," Buck says, like maybe the guy doesn't know.
"I sure hope not."
Buck checks the number, just to be sure; he's in 3E, and this is 3B. He rubs his face, his palm catching on stubble. It's the second of the month, isn't it? This guy must have moved in yesterday and brought a ghost with him, and Buck's feet just assumed he'd want to deal with that now.
"I'm really sorry, man. I'm a probationary firefighter and I just finished my first forty-eight hour shift. I'm lucky I made it to the right building."
"You sure about that?"
"Like ninety percent."
The guy cocks his head at Buck, a small frown creasing his handsome features. He's handsome, right? He seems really handsome. "Is your name Evan?"
"Uh, yeah. Did you get some of my mail? I'm in 3E, so they probably look kind of similar."
"I think you exorcized my grandfather. El Paso, 2007."

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance
Ok! so this review is for the first game that I actually started and finished in the new year. Yay! When I stumbled upon the last game I wrote a review for, I had actually been looking for this one:
Tumblr media
Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance was one of the first video games I’d ever touched in my life. I didn’t even learn it was a spinoff until I’d accidentally bought the mainline game two years ago and was supremely confused. Needless to say, I was really excited to see if this held up to my expectations. Now, this game is part of a kind of set of very similar games that were released by snowblind studios all around the same time, so BG:DA2, as well as the two similar games that take place in the Everquest universe, the first and second Champions of Norrath games. But this one is all D&D 3e babyyyy. Now Im not going to spend this review sucking up to WotC obviously, but it is very charming to re-play a game and see all the references I had been missing as a kid. I thought beholders were as well-known as dragons, lol.
Now I know that the game has been, in recent years, re-released, so lets talk about what I like about it and see if it’s a worthy way to go on a little early 2000s fantasy nostalgia trip.
First lets talk about your characters. You get a quite limited selection of three characters with pre-selected names and classes. You can also unlock Drizzt Do’Urden in the character select screen but i didnt know so I played as the elf Adrianna, and my 2P played as... human archer. whose name I forget. each of them has the stats and abilities you would expect, ie. the sorcerer starts with high int and low str, and can cast magic missile. Part of the great fun of the game is finding new weapons and armor to upgrade your character with, but seeing as the game is locked to the basic loot tables in D&D 3e, the loot is a lot more boring than I remembered. You’ll mostly get a couple of weapons worth clinging to over the course of the game, and sell everything else. But hey! at least the woman armor looks respectable. (image source cause its from someones letsplay but mega spoilers in there!)
Tumblr media
Before I get started rambling about the gameplay, you might be interested to know that the music is done by the infamous jeremy soule so if you want some very morrowind-esque vibes, you can always give it a listen: ( x | x | x )
Tumblr media
Okay so gameplay stuff. The game is set up in a bunch of dungeons where you look down from above and you go from “room” to “room” (they arent all literal rooms) and you clear out all of the enemies. Its quite cute, it does remind me of a miniature in a model set. Enemies dont respawn, so there IS a limited quantity of experience in the game. You can load characters from past playthroughs if you want to start out beefier, and this is recommended if you want to play the harder difficulties. Its also important to keep that in mind when youre playing with more than one person, because if youre always getting the kills, your player 2 will fall behind quickly.
The game has some kind of clunky controls, I really hate how difficult it is to switch spells (you have to use the D-Pad and they give you like forty empty spell slots lol). This issue is especially bad compared to the way that champions of norrath handles it (basically offers you hotkeys, its way better). We also found that the archery was a lot less.... fun than just melee bonking bc there are really limited projectiles. by which I mean its just arrows. plain ol arrows. Also there arent any rings around the feet of your character to help differentiate P1 from P2 so i kept walking into walls. Its not helped by the fact that the gameplay is v simplistic hack n slashy so your eyes kind of glaze over sometimes.
Another thing of note, which I never really noticed as a kid, is how front-loaded the game is. In the beginning of the game, youre completing a questline attached to the Elfsong tavern, and every once in a while, when you stop at the tavern to buy new weapons, someone will show up to give you a new quest. The quests were always part of the linear plot, so they didnt change the shape of the game at all, but they made the world feel more interesting. By the time you step into the second chapter of the game, the world begins to feel more flat and less and less named npcs pop up to chat with you. It ends up making the game feel really lonely. The NPCs that DO exist are animated quite well for a 2001 game, though, and I was really struck by their individually moving fingers which really helped them feel very emotive, which was underlined by the way that NPCs take up the whole screen when you talk with them.
Tumblr media
having a sexy bartender in the first five minutes of your game helps keep the audience engaged.
Its a quite short adventure, it took my partner and I about a week to play all the way through and honestly? By the end I was mostly just kind of excited that I can move on to the second game now and see how much better it is. I think that the game is OK, but should you pay $30 new for it? NO. you can get ps2 copies used for $10. and if youre interested in playing BOTH of the games (and/or the champions games as well) i’d just.... buy a ps2. This game is very imperfect and leaves a lot to be desired. I would not recommend it to everyone, but I would recommend it to anyone craving a classic campaign but doesnt have a party. It does scratch the D&D itch but its not the best of it’s kind. That being said, if your time is limited, I’d say that most people would prefer the Champion’s games to this one.

Ok like when orph & mart start getting close at cloud ruler like...orph is the type who will walk past martin as hes sitting in the hall and mess up his hair meanwhile martin is...not that playful at all hes just so earnestly sweet its disgusting...if he passes orph he will pause, gently tuck his hair behind his ear or kiss his temple or some corny shit, and THEN move on
& after a while it kind of starts to bother orph hes like whats your deal? Its not that deep?? & martin is just very straightforward and simple about it like i love you and want to do nice things for you when i see you. shrug.
& it leads to a bigger conversation between them of like: is orph really 100% comfortable in his attraction to men? (the obvious answer is yes, duh? hes been dating men his whole life? But slowly he comes to the realization that he has a habit in relationships with men of just drowning any real vulnerability and honesty under this thick layer of guys-bein-dudes rough&tumble camaraderie and it actually scares the shit out of him cause now hes aware of it and he owes it to martin to do better)

At @my-smial‘s request, I’m going to elaborate on the differences I’ve seen between 3E D&D and 5E, focusing on mechanics which make big differences to the experience of play. Following up on this post (x), it’s intended as further discussion of the ways in which 5E is a fundamentally different system despite frequent cosmetic similarities with 3E.
First, here’s where I’m coming from. I’ve almost exclusively played 3E - and, which is going to make many people reading this a bit boggled, I honestly do mean 3E, not 3.5. My childhood group was a bit set in our ways (and unwilling to spend money on new source books). So we certainly didn’t bother switching to 5E! We were an insular group, playing with my father (who cut his own teeth on early AD&D, and brought in lots of homebrew rules from that system), and I didn’t really even know that other RPGs and play styles existed until I started playing with college friends much later. I have 3E basically memorized - enough to point out where 3 and 3.5 differ, even - but my knowledge of 5E is limited to recent exposure, talking to 5E friends, and just skimming the books.
I’d love to hear other people’s input, especially if you disagree with me or can bring in more input from the 5E side of things.
3E numbers are just plain higher than 5E numbers. This follows on from AD&D numbers, which were even higher. A big reason, I think, is the 5E proficiency system over 3E’s skill ranks and attack bonus. The proficiency bonus is never higher than 6, while a fighter’s attack bonus goes up every level, reaching 20 (and higher, if you’re playing epic-level versions), and skill ranks are a similar progressions. ACs are lower in 5E to compensate, and AC-enhancing spells less powerful. And this is slightly less true, as technically both 3E and 5E recommend using 4d6 drop 1 to generate ability scores and ending up with a usual spread around 10-16, (ignore this if you don’t understand it), but 3E expects even your ability scores to be slightly higher; you can increase them more frequently as you go up in level, and spells and items that augment them are more common and powerful. Again, this is following the trend from AD&D, where I’ve seen people on forums swearing by things like a forty-point buy system that result in the majority of your stats important to your class starting at 16-18.
Result: 5E players expect different numbers. My players were impressed by stats I considered mediocre, and they initially failed to utilize stat enhancements (or debuffs, on their enemies) because they thought they were already high enough and didn’t realize that those were still powerful tools.
Following from this, 5E advancement is different from 3E advancement, because you can’t rely on increasing stats to get more powerful. Some of 3E’s special-ability-focused classes advance more by accumulating their various powers than by adding up numbers; my impression is that this is true basically of all 5E classes.
Result: 5E players look more for discrete abilities than to geek out over having a six instead of a five. My players were sometimes disappointed by 3E’s less overtly flashy classes, and felt frustrated when their rewards were “hey your save gets +2 now!!!!” They also tended, following on the last point, to fail to remember and understand how the various numbers mattered and to thus fail to fully utilize the many, many 3E buffs and debuffs.
The whole concept of short rests, cantrips (as opposed to 3E’s 0-level “cantrip” spells), and refreshable special abilities (which actually draws a lot from 4E, in my opinion) makes a huge change in resource management. In 3E, managing your resources like a caster’s spells and a magic item’s charges is based only on a 24-hour-day, and you end the day fairly drained and low-power. This is especially important for low-level magic users, who often have barely half a dozen spells, many of them practically cosmetic like prestidigitation, before they’re out for the day and reduced to maybe bopping a goblin over the head with a staff and praying nothing tries to make a go for their AC of 11. Compare 5E, where magic users have unlimited access to cantrips that are often quite powerful (more equivalent to a 1st or maybe even 2nd level spell in 3E) and many class’s special abilities can be refreshed by a short rest instead of overnight. The resource management becomes much shorter-range.
Result: 5E players don’t pay attention to resources and time flow the same way 3E players do. For my players, I think this was the biggest stumbling block making the switch: they ignored my increasingly unsubtle hints that they might want to stop for the night and repeatedly charged into combat without realizing that their cleric only had one spell left before they were out of aid - and out of healing.
This is a subtler one, and partially based on the kind of campaign you’re running, but I get the impression that 5E is a lot more stingy with its magic items than 3E. They separate items by common-rare instead of minor-major, and the random gen tables seem to net you items less often. 3E players get loaded up, unless the DM is consciously restricting magic items. It’s a bit of a meme, the ludicrous-looking adventurer with a cloak of darkest night and a couple jeweled rings and a massive necklace and a golden circlet and a pair of goggles and.... and it’s all part of the way that, I think, 3E advancement seems to be much steeper and higher-ceilinged than 5E.
Result: didn’t come up as much in that brief adventure I ran with this group, so I can’t comment well. My players weren’t used to having as many items as I gave them, but, when they remembered they existed, they also were a lot more ingenious about clever and unorthodox applications of items, instead of brute-forcing and expecting to find new items if they wanted to solve new problems.

5. Favorite NPC.
Koob!
Once upon a time, back in 3e, a friend of mine was running an Oriental Adventures campaign. I played a Mirumoto Niten Master, who is a tale worthy of telling on its own, and ran around with a group of misfits below his station. Early in the game, we came across a wrecked village with a single survivor, a single boy of maybe 9 or 10. We found him, naked and shivering, in the middle of the town, clutching a ruined sword. He remembered nothing of the attack, nor anything other than his name: Koob. We couldn’t afford the time to bring Koob to another village, so we just kinda took him along on our own world-saving quest.
Thing was, Koob was ridiculously lethal with his rusty beater of a sword. Edd, rolling behind his DM screen, refused to tell us anything about Koob’s stats or what he was rolling, but it soon became obvious that Koob didn’t need us to protect him. He got surrounded by lemurs, weak devils, but before we could save him, the lad neatly bisected three of them with one swing. He had Great Cleave! This was no ordinary kid! He only got better as time went on, and despite our best interrogative methods, both mundane and magical, we learned nothing about his true nature. Koob eventually left us and we went on to fight in the Field of Forty Giants, but there was no doubt that Koob was going to end up going out and forging some great destiny on his own in Rokugan.

Climate and theology, Jonah 3
I wonder if it is time to bend my theological comments if any toward a recognition of the disaster we are in the midst of.
I know I have friends who are refusing to hear, yes, even religious friends, looking for the Deus ex machina to fix the problem. Dim wicks who can barely see past the end of their noses.
I watched Greta Thunberg's 3 hour documentary on the climate. It is right up to date. I watched it on PBS but it is available here also and probably lots of other places. It's definitely worth the time to watch.
Now - what to do. That's a different problem. It's more what to undo. But theologically, some of us must first get our heads out of the sand. Particularly the religious who are too afraid to face reality, like the Chinese government who cannot tell the truth because they need to save face. The second coming will not fix this. Those who are denying climate change likely overlap with coronavirus deniers, the vaccine hesitant, and those who still claim that the US election was fraudulent. It won't do, folks. You will be devoured along with the rest of us by the 'fire from his mouth'. (Psalms 18 et al.)
What did Jesus say? The only sign for this evil and adulterous generation is the sign of Jonah. And this has nothing to do with the fish story. We are Nineveh - we need to change our behaviour and stop denying reality for a starter.
Arise - walk to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against her, for their evil has come up in my face.
We can also consider ourselves Jonah, the one who refuses to preach that there is a problem.  But he changes - well, at least a smidgen. Yet 40 days (an indeterminate time) and Nineveh will be changed. (Note I did not interpret that as 'destroyed'. I could have used overturned but for some reason I didn't. I could not have used destroyed because that I have used for a different root. Destroyed is the traditional gloss.)
And Nineveh turned from its wickedness, from the king to the cattle. And they even stopped eating and drinking.
As some of us have done for Covid-19, we turned our lives to help stop the virus. It turns out that too few of us have done this so our action is moot as to its effectiveness for herd immunity. The same political issue happens here as in all crises - a few, sometimes a large few, do the work, but everyone has to, not just a few. And maybe it's good that we are failing so that we do not restart the destructive paths we have been on. You will get this from the film: 2020 saw a 7% reduction in emissions over 2019. We need to do this every year for the next 10 years to get to a control point that will begin to hold the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees.
How long is the gap between human turnaround and God sighing. Well, folks, God sighs (that's my word for nkm, which some translate as repent, a word I don't use). What might God's sigh be composed of - signs of hope?
China and Poland closing coal facilities,
Alberta closing down the oil sands,
Brazil removing its knee from the rainforest that makes the earth unable to breathe.
politicians to stop lying,
all of us changing our clothing and purchasing habits,
and our diets,
and carbon capture being scaled up,
and cattle burping less. (Lots of cattle in Jonah, not to mention the children...)
No - we don't have to 'go back to church' to reinforce our prejudices. Nineveh didn't promise much. If church is even to continue, we need to become the church, a caring body that is no longer taking refuge in its sin. It's the king, the secular leader (clearly anticipating the one who removed his garment and washed the feet of his disciples) who says - Who knows. This God may turn and sigh, and turn from his fierce anger and we will not perish ... (immediately).
Turn false interpretations upside down. Let priests indeed be clothed with righteousness. And let's get on with doing something good in that good temple we have been entrusted with. (The patient among us can also reread early Genesis beginning here. It's a very gentle presentation that extends our vision past the end of the nose.)

For a short cantata on Jonah, listen to this music derived from the accents of the Hebrew Bible with a nod or two to Gershwin. Looking for a sponsor to get this performed and make it go viral! ($20K should do it.) Get the message out that God has given us humans the task of controlling our waste products. ($40K and we can perform Unleashing Leviathan as well. Pace those who say that the dragons are dealt with in Gen 1.)
You religious who are looking for a bit of comfort  - by all means read Psalm 18. Concentrate on verses 5 to 16. And then imagine you are one of David's enemies. Conspiracy theorists are not on a friendly basis with the Most High. Business as usual will not fly.

For several years, I have been running a Wuxia pastiche campaign within my Northport setting.  The population of Northport is quite mixed,  having a large number of goblin artisans (the goblins have lived in the city since its founding a few thousand years ago), humans, orcs, and a fair amount of mixed folk, given the situation to the east, where the nation of Shevnia lost a war with orcs because of a lost paytrain for their army, sort of like the post goblin war of Lesserton & Mor.  There are nations with different cultures to either side of Northport, which is set in an area inspired by Banestorm, in the old empire of Aral, with Valdassya to the west, and Shevnia to the east.  In addition to the Aralaise speaking Orcs, Goblins, and humans, there are two other communities: Little Shevnia to the east, and Little Sahud to the west.  I was sort of looking at Tredroy as an inspiration for part of this.  (Of course my city was also informed by the advenure Banrnacus, City in Peril. from Dragon Magazine # 80, as mentioned on my last podcast, along with my frequently recommended Ruins of the Undercity)
I know that using a pan-Asian pastiche like Sahud in my campaign is pretty crassly not PC, but I had a request by several players armed with google translate and wikipedia articles and a general knowledge base of cheesy kung fu films that wanted to play in that kind of setting. With apologies to the large number of people who may be offended by this kind of colonial cultural appropriation, this is how the long running conflict between Sakemoko , the patron of these characters, roughly 450 points:
Sakemoko is a squire+treasure hunter+ 50pt genin lens with born warleader 3 ,charisma +2, social regard 2: respected, (Social stigma minority, code of honor: bushido, sense of duty to Sahudese,) guild rank 4, status 2 filthy rich Large ally group of catfolk ninja office:master of funerals, He also has several points in independent income based on His involvement in numerous side businesses
and Akira Aku No, his enemy, roughly 500 points
half oni boss, head of rival ninja clan Brute +treasure hunter+ 50pt wizard lens+ 50pt ninja lens+ infernal + half ogre, has bloodlust, berserk
Both of these figures had extensive ally groups, each having at their service numerous ashigaru, and rival ninja clans.
The Team consisting of Chye Isuel, an ashigaru with some distant dragonman heritage, Chou-Zen Mou, an elder infused wizard specialized in lightning spells, Ales Konstantin, a Shevnian Squire+Adept, Iskander, a Valdassian martial artist (the player was using mostly 3e to build him), Tanaka Kojimaru, a Samurai warrior poet. Jin the Yak and Airis Moonshadow were no longer with the group.
Along with them were Di San Ge Er Zi the one eyed Ashigaru, and a number of mercenaries they hired away from Akira Aku No’s mercenary recruitment drive  for promises of better pay, the swordsman Xu, and his partner Chung Wang (Thank you Jackie Chan) as with most of my npc’s, I give a super brief stat block pulled usually from DF15 until more details are needed.
Chung Wang is a Brute St 15 DX 12 IQ 10 Ht 12 Hp 15 per 10 will 10 fp 12 T/s 1d+1/2d+2 Bs 6 mv 6 dodge 9 parry 10 DR 3 torso 5 Skills brawl 13 Two handed sword 14 tetsubo, 2d+4 crushing Gluttony, overconfident, compulsive carousing, greedy
Xu is a Skirmisher St 11 dx 14 iq 10 ht 11 Hp 11 per 10 will 10 fp 11 T/s 1d-1/1d+1 Bs 7.5 mv 7 dodge 11 parry 12 Dr 3 Combat reflexes, ambidexterous Extravagant, impulsive, compulsive carousing Ambitious, suspicious, jealous Broadsword 16 1d+2 cut Shortsword 12 1d cut Karate 12 Fastdraw katana 15 Fastdraw shortsword 15 Light lamelar and helmet with ear and neck protection, Cheap ornate katana and wakizashi
Having decimated the forces of Akira Aku No on the initial raid to recover the tea set containing a divine being or two, and then by robbing his casino, the oni blooded boss had to resort to hiring mercenaries, including, initially Xu, and Chung Wang and a couple of naginata wielding ashigaru, along with Ale’s enemy, Bresnark, a magic user equipped with Rain of Stones and also accompanied by a Created Brute Warrior, who was defeated and robbed of his mundane gear by Iskander and Tanaka. Bresnark could probably have been taken out, except that he has plot protection as an enemy, and has to be defeated by Ales.
During the assault on Sakemoko’s compound, with rooftop ninja archers and assorted poorly armored mooks attacking the gate, a couple of ninja’s got in ( one disguised as a new ashigaru hireling, who was spotted as odd by Di San Ge er Zi,) and  poisoned the food stores in the kitchen  and then through poison shuriken at the two ashigaru it was hired with. They then led a chase through the complex, cutting holes in shoji paper walls and hiding in the rafters before being cornered in the library, where they were cornered and threatened to burn the place down (Ales stepped in and used Extinguish Fire) They were locked in irons, from which they made an escape, and were eventually hunted down.  Chou-Zen had eliminated another ninja who had been on the roof, by casting grease and causing them to fall into the koi pond in the courtyard. Another one was dispatched after the shoji walls were all collapsed and it had no place to hide. The poisoned Ashigaru were treated by the house physician, Yodoko no Hana, who is based on Ehi Shiina from Audition
Yodoku no Hana (poisonous flower) 125pt sage, with Alchemy, poison, physiology first aid, physician, herbary and esoteric medicine, Psychology diagnosis and surgery and detect lies, but no modular book learned wisdom. (Instead, she has the ninja lens) She has callousness, sadist and curious and has torture, pressure secrets and massage? She is attractive and immune to poison and has high pain tolerance. She makes poisons and potions That cause sensitivity and reduce will
In the end, Sakemoko siezed a coveted office, MAster of Funerary Services, from Akira Aku No, who had botched things when his barrels of salt packed dead waiting shipping to the homeland were animated by a toxifier demon, and arranged for all of the funerals of the people who had attacked him, and even gave stipends to the families, building him more Social regard.
Akira Aku No appeared a day later with a full procession including dragonmen and musicians, and sued for peace, saying that he was relocating to Little Shevnia for a beaurocratic job, and sold off his remaining interests in Little Sahud to Sakemoko.
From here, the crew will be heading to Veroigne, a region south of Northport where rice is grown for the Sahudese of Northport.
Veroigne developed in the campaign because a new player wanted to play a member of royalty and his husband, captain of his guard. I had little trouble building them, except for the general absence of Social Status in DF, and settled on giving him a couple of levels of Courtesy Rank. The two, both handsome  Chivalrous knights, had a backstory that created some campaign setting. By not accepting an arranged marriage, Baronet James forfeited the barony to his sister Loraine, who had married Marcel Pequenaud, the baron from a neighboring comunity that had serfs, while most of the Veroignese had died during the plague forty years ago, leaving the small barony struggling.  Pequenaud is a horrible ruler, and most of the family retainers loyal to Sir Percival and James have become Robin-Hood like bandits dedicated to protecting the peasantry from the Barons predations. As his soldiers are largely collecting taxes, Several other PC’s from Northport (Kirpich Rockson the Priest of Grom, Syvanus the elven archer/thief/wizard,  Marlena the Seasoned Apprentice and Snorry Rosslovich the Seasoned Guard, all of whom searched for the lost paytrain in the Shevnian Hexcrawl, along with Dionysus the faun swashbuckler, Aethul the ranger, and Balir Ironhide the Dwarf are on their way to hunt the Terrible Beast of Veroigne, which is terrorizing the peasantry.  Along the way they have met a party of Dolmenwood creatures,  a moss dwarf, a woodgrue, a frost elf and a grimalkin, and had little issue with them except for the compulsive playing of the woodgrue, that affected a party member or two, and a fantastic creature, the Stag of Veroigne, which gave Aethul a blessing when he approached it nicely. Killing it would have brought on a curse, which would have intensified if they had eaten it. It would have resurrected itself like Frey’s Goats the next day had they done so.
As to what James and Percival were up to in Northport? Thjey joined up with a pair of warrior /wizards, Sederic and Grimaldi to hunt down the racketeering Connard DuMenteur (Asshole the Liar) who had informed the Guard of Vilgar’s underground fighting operation at the very start of the campaign, back in August of 2013.  Connard had a fortified building with all access to the undercity cut off, so as to prevent an attack from below.  Among his personal crew of kneecappers and fingertakers who collected money for him were five brutes (including Lourdad and Chienne LaChatte, a gigantic elder infused brute that collected fingers as trophies.
After bashing through the brutes, one surrendered (Lourdad) and they went after DuMenteur. He had holed up in his Magelocked lower appartment, and had time to load up on paut, and  set up a trap. He opened a secret door that lead into an L-shaped closet, and hid in an alcove behind an arras, and waited for them to break in the door. They had been using sense foes earlier, but they all blindly ran into the close, and had it Magelocked behind them, and were stuck for an hour. when they got out ( the door was stone, and the knights were in front, unable to squeeze past to attempt to break down the door), Both DuMenteur and Vilgar were waiting for them, having come to a financial arrangement. ( I have a lot of bosses parlaying).  Grimaldi and Sederic of the cursed, dancing sword went on to do some advertising work for the underground tavern, standing watch while some laborers nailed signs.
Another group, the one that had negotiated a truce with the ogres in the winecellars and are travelling with a four-armed demon hunting celestial descended from a servitor of Kali had tracked down a couple of cultists who were on their way to buy cuttlefish. The cultists of Saturnos the Devourerer have an initiation rite in which the supplicant dyes theyr robes in cuttlefish ink by placing it in a barrel with them and agitating the squiddos by drowning a cat. This leads to the typical markings of the cultists, blackened hands and scratches all over their faces.  Typically, they are led into what they think is a sex cult with offers of carnal relations with succubi and incubi, and up until now, the assorted groups of PC’s had thought they were dealing with a demon cult, especially due to all of the petty demons and Demons of Old that they had faced. They were forgetting about the Demons from Between the Stars… As it was discovered by this group, which included Oly the thief, who had funded the paytrain Hexcrawl with loot from fighting the cult when Ludlow the Munificent  accidentally blocked their ceremony and created a gate to Hell, Mancini the Guild agent (Agent+Treasure Hunter) and his guard ally Norman, Aoife the Leprechaun Druid who was on the mission to negotiate with the Trolls and entered the Library of Flax, Ardenas Barehand, who had been involved with Oly  in stealing the Jugga Trophy from the Orcish Dojo, along with Kalima, they discovered what the cultists were really about.

When they followed the cuttlefish seekers back to their lair, finding their signature trap, Evil Runes that drain FP,  and stealthily took them and a couple petty demons out, they found a large crowd of cultists about to sacrifice a demon of old! the demon, along with some petty demons participating in the ceremony, immediately attacked Kalima, a favored enemy. The feeling was mutual, and she drained health on a couple, like her ancestor, and the demon ripped free of his silvered chains and flew up to attack her (he had berserk). She killed him by eviscerating him and eating his heart.  Unfortunately for the PC’s all of the deaths (and there were many) enhanced the ceremony in progress, the summoning of an Elder Servitor.  It took a lot, including Ardenas using Winged Knife on the cult champion’s silvered greatsword to kill the servitor but they did. The cultists of the Devourerer, who started the campaign by killing everyone who had the spell divination or any kind of oracular ability, are Cultists of the Elder Gods!
This was noticed by the Ymid, with his Sense Weird ability, but he was two bothered by the destruction of his skiff ( a nifty little contragravity craft he had parked on the other side of the Bone Gate) by a Bhole passing through the gate. Yaay there is now a super Dire Rot worm  somewhere in the dungeon (pencilling in a purple worm encounter). The Juniors group will be fetching alchemical components for the repair of the skiff. Additionally, they have just acquired some cultists of their own; some serfs fleeing Veroigne who were met on the road by thatr gorup, who are all worshipers of Vejovis, the roman defender of injustice, worshiped by Nodwin, the Initiate travelling with the Juniors group.

SACRED HEARTS SPOTLIGHT:
today we’re showcasing our 3E tenant lee insu, who has been with us at sweetheart since january 2018. he’s currently a bartender, but we hear he has big dreams of becoming a designer someday. turn to page 5 to read more!
PAST.
In-su never felt the need to search for the father who’d left him, his mother, and South Korea for a dream that didn’t have room for them. He’s seen his face in passing—a famous American director now with another family and another son, but In-su refuses to read the articles and turns away from the movie posters. He pays disregard in kind.
The memories he has of his mother are threadbare and faded–rough hands and the smell of jasmine, a long spill of black hair that tickled his cheeks. She passes away a few weeks after his fourth birthday. He only has one picture of her that he keeps folded in his wallet, tucked away and always close. He can count on one hand the friends he’s shared it with.
His grandmother is an artist. She’d taken him and his mother in after his father left, and when his mother’s ashes are scattered into the sea, she raises him by herself. She’s well known in Jeju–her Seoye and watercolor paintings on display in art galleries, sometimes museums. She creates her own hanji from the paper mulberry trees her family had grown by their house. They’re old, their branches long and wide (In-su likes to sleep under their shade, leaves falling, catching in his hair) and his grandmother teaches him how to collect the bark, how to skin and dry them. They burn the stems together, scatter the ashes into water to boil and his hair always smells of smoke. His grandmother is his world. He’s happy. And he falls asleep next to her, their mattress tucked under a window so they could count the stars before they slept, and wake to the gentle warmth of the early morning light.
He grows up in the forests. Climbs the trees so his body is lithe, agile and all muscle, hands calloused from the bark and tedious work of creating hanji. He starts school, and when the other children learn he has no mother or father they tease and bully. But In-su has a steel spine and volatile temper. He hits back with his fists, and when his grandmother is called to the school she turns to him first, “Did they deserve it?” And when In-su answers, “Yes.” She nods, satisfied, and says nothing else, even when the teacher pushes for her to punish him. She shares his steel spine and soft heart for those she loves.
At thirteen he grows too big for the bed. And with two mattresses the cottage feels too cramped, too small, and at eighteen he outgrows that and Jeju too—moving to Seoul after High School (he’s more like his father than he thinks). His grandmother doesn’t cry as the train pulls from the station, but when he calls for the first time he can hear her tears despite the rattle and thrum of cars outside the thin walls of his battered apartment.
He’s always been good with his hands. His grandmother had raised him on art and color and patience, and soon he is enamored by the clothing trends throughout the city. The colors and fabrics and the drape of them over skin. Befriending a designer he meets at a bar, In-su buys her drinks every night she’s there until she agrees to teach him. Mari is a firecracker of a woman, about to hit forty and she takes him in as his protégé with threats of late nights, odd hours, and more coffee than blood pumping through their system. But In-su loves it. He finds himself working long nights at a bar, and bleary eyed during the day helping the designer in her studio. After three months Mari trusts him enough to handle simple patterns and cheap fabric, and half a year later she allows him to touch a sewing machine and stitch together her designs.
It’s been two years since he moved to Seoul. His grandmother calls. She’s sick, he can hear it in her voice (weak, quiet, all the things she isn’t). What starts as a simple cough is rotting in her lungs, and she doesn’t have much time left. In-su drops everything to move back to Jeju. He cares for her with an uncharacteristic gentleness, the small cottage smelling of sick and sweat but he never leaves. She dies in January, and he makes sure her body is burned with white cherry blossoms and reams of hanji.
PRESENT.
He abandons the cottage again. The familial plot of land left to overgrow and her old calligraphy and watercolor brushes to gather dust. The lights of Seoul are dimmer the second time around, and Mari has moved back to Japan, so In-su bustles behind the bar in the evenings and moonlights as a freelance designer in the spare hours he has between work and sleep. It’s not perfect. But In-su’s head is above the water, and really—that’s all he asks for.

A lot of therapies combine distracting the pet dog from the stress, while using desensitization to progressively lessen the impact from whatever is resulting in the stress and anxiety. In my consequence write-ups, I am going to look into the saving process, from how to select a canine or puppy from a home align, to usual rescue habits problems. Chihuahuas could be actually little, but they possess the mindset from a huge pet dog - bold, energetic, and also smart. After six weeks from supplying Jes LINEAGE Dry Canine food items, I have actually found what does it cost? she is actually changed. I suggest this to any individual who is considering taking on a dog or even an individual that has actually been actually a dog owner their entire life.

WIND25: Bert's Bikepacking Twentyniner

Exodus 36
When I completed chapter 26 yesterday, this one was 79% guessed by my algorithms, so I decided to finish Exodus. There are differences in spelling which have led the algorithms sometimes to differing renditions from chapters other than chapter 26. A curious result that may bear further analysis. E.g. אחות (sister?) vs אחת (one or other). Perhaps this spelling change is deliberate. So I surmise that in chapter 26 we have direct speech from the Maker. In this chapter we may not be so presumptuous with indirect speech concerning the makers. (There's theology in those mater lectiones). Note that in Bob's Bible, I have put the English text of all completed books into a simple PDF for reading and comments. The shared location supports comments. Is the text readable on its own? Of course I did this close translation for the music, and other nefarious reasons, but I would welcome serious feedback. While there are many workers noted in the text, they are subsumed under the singular actor. The one body is evident without tension. Humanity does not seem to 'get' this. The tension between the head of a body and its many members continues today in our extreme individualistic society and in the extremes of corruption evident in social structures, both ours and others. Plus ça change. This music can be compared with the music from yesterday's post on chapter 26. Interesting variations on a theme. There may be no gloss atonement in Bob's Bible, but there is plenty of becoming one. It is disappointing that to atone has taken on a sense of guilt and obligation for sin rather than the joy expressed in the unity of creator and created by the construction of this body-like temple. I even heard the word used in a lecture last Wednesday by a gifted teacher, fortunately not central to his excellent lecture on the historical background to Jeremiah. Verse 19, my mechanical rendition: And he made the covering for the tent from the skin of God dyed red! (A mistake in the stem אל for אלים. The stem should read איל ram or hart). But you know that this similarity of sound is intended in the Song of Songs to hide the name of God. See the chorus:
I have adjured you, daughters of Jerusalem, by the hosts of gazelle or by the hart of the field,
בְּאַיְל֣וֹת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה sounds a little like אֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֔י the One, the Sufficient, who appeared to Abraham. The Song is one of the keys to Torah.
I am really quite astonished that I preserved these intimate chapters for this last lap. I wonder what else remains.

Exodus 26
We continue the detailed plans for the dwelling-place for God. There is a tenderness expressed in these instructions for the desire of the human to enter into and hold fast to a complete relationship with the Mystery that all know if only from observing the beauty of the universe. I cannot, of course, see into the mind of all, so you may take my statement as a statement of hope rather than direct knowledge. I would allow such hope to extend to all the creatures of the earth and sea, even if their bootstrap must begin with something as simple as self-protection. For one does protect self in order to exercise those gifts one is given for the benefit of all, even if it is the gift of web-spinning in order to catch insects. And God saw all that he had constructed, (even the creepy-crawlies) and behold, it was very good. The creation is of time and the timeless glory of each constructed part of the whole. The tabernacle and its careful pattern reflects this completed wholeness. It is a witness to a greater glory. It anticipates the glory that is to come in the temple. The New Testament makes the temple a type both of the one who was slain before the foundation of the world, and of the temple of the Spirit. (A comparison of this chapter with the next - tomorrow - will reveal just how much the two of them anticipate the incarnation. O my God, may we not weaponize such joy in ignorance.) All this happened a long time ago, I remember ... but set down this ... (T.S. Eliot. The Journey of the Magi.) I did the first verses of this a long time ago and at the time I dutifully rendered אחות as sister, a curious gloss for a curtain. But see chapter 26 tomorrow for an explanation of my choice (always subject to revision). The music differs slightly from chapter to chapter. You will be able to put the music side by side (seven or so verses apart from each other to begin) to compare.
