I wish I could even start how to write about how tropical or even "warm" places are never portrayed as "home" in art (especially in pop culture), if that makes sense. They are always portrayed as wild places, exotic places, or both, but they're never shown as places were people live their lives.

Main characters don't ever come from a tropical country. There aren't sitcoms set in a hot city in the tropics (well, of course there are telenovelas) about the daily lives of normal people. Fantasy and science fiction series often start in places that look suspiciously like medieval Europe, and when they go to a jungle or desert land or planet, it's because something Exotic is about to happen.

Temperate climates (and their cultures) are The Default. Every other place, in real life or in fiction, is judged against them.

To the point that people who live in the tropics are jealous of snowy Christmas. Because that's what we've been raised with with the cultural monopoly of the US/Europe.

It's so weird. Everything has to have snowy winters, orange fall leaves, and pine trees in fiction. I live in a place where winter lasts a month, there are palm trees everywhere, and long, hot summers. I could never relate. Bro I'm j jus existing here.

Here’s the finished version, another acrylic on canvas painting to go with this end!verse piece. I based the wings off of Ezekiel’s.  Because it’s a pretty large painting it’s difficult to photograph with all the detail, but I did my best.

I've said this before but my personal favorite aspect of this is the detail that they have to wait for thunderstorms to play their vampire baseball, because loud crack/boom noises coming from the woods would be super suspicious to the inhabitants of a small forest town.

I spent THREE YEARS as a child looking for the unabridged version of Princess Bride.

The Princess Bride is such a funny book to read after ONLY seeing the movie. Like Goldman made up a fake author from a fake country and proceeded to write the book as an abridged version of what the fake author wrote... and then he proceeds to add in notes to the "abridged version" mentioning all the boring world building stuff he skipped because it was boring.

Like shout out to William Goldman, man really did make an entire book that is just "the cool scenes you thought of in your head" and then made up a fake author to abridge so he doesn't have to connect them.

We’ve added some new functionality on the web search page. It’s now possible on desktop to view community, blog, and tag results. You can also now filter by multiple post types rather than just one at a time. Finally, we’ve added sorting and filtering options for community results. Stop by Search and Filtering Basics for some tips and tricks.

We’re also taking steps to improve the in-blog search infrastructure and address issues with searching original posts since 2017.

Reasons for community member removals and bans are now available in the audit log.

Suptober 2020 — Day Thirteen — Ladies

y'all emergency preparedness for a crosscountry drive isn't about some unprecedented disaster. i live on an island off the washington coast and it's roughly 3,000 miles to my hometown. i've made the drive multiple times, & the fact is 3,000 miles is just a lot of ground to cover. a lot happens in 3,000 miles. i once drove out of a blizzard only to get walled into a motel for 3 days by a wild fire.

most of my trips have been smooth and even super fun. but not all.

if you've never driven that distance & you've always lived within an hour of basic necessities (hospital, grocery store, etc.) the idea of being hours away from any of those things might seem impossible unless something has gone very wrong but many people live like that all the time and there are plenty of places in the world where you need to prepare for that even if you're just passing through. i genuinely don't think anyone should be driving 3,000 miles without food & water, clothes & a sleeping bag that can keep you safe overnight in extreme temperatures, and basic vehicle skills like changing a tire, checking ur oil & transmission fluid, etc. i know we all do what we gotta do and we can't always prep as much as we want to so it is what it is.

but i don't prep to sleep overnight in a blizzard on a multi-thousand mile drive crossing multiple mountain ranges because i'm a bad driver who doesn't check the weather. i prep because shit happens & being ready for it can be the difference between dying of exposure and watching TikToks comfortably in my backseat while I wait overnight for the storm to blow over (which I have done).

Every couple years I have to redownload Uber for transportation purposes before deleting it again. By default the Uber app invariably puts itself in German. Neither my phone number nor my location are German. I have never used Uber in Germany.

I set the app to English. I move on with my life. A few years later I redownload it. It's in German again.

I used to frequently switch my various devices and accounts between German and English language settings. I've had it set back to English for years now - I haven't been using German frequently any more so it's less fun/useful. But it's wild how many random accounts don't seem to quite hold the language settings correctly? If I download a phone app the settings - but ONLY the settings, not the regular app contents - will sometimes be in German. I just had to use a hotel website I assume I must have used in the past, because it did the welcome/setup in German before switching back to English. Amazon used to periodically redirect to its .de site until I completely wiped my browser's cache/history. If I log into my google account on a chrome browser then google search results will prioritize German-language websites, even though nothing else about my google account is set to German. Every once in a while my phone's default weather app switches to German after installing an update.

It's so strange, it's like switching back and forth so many times left ghosts behind, and now there's bits and pieces of the Internet that never got the memo on the settings update.
