Transforming Infrastructure Development with BIM
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is revolutionizing the development of infrastructure projects around the globe. As a comprehensive digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility, BIM serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility, forming a reliable basis for decisions during its lifecycle from inception onward. Here's how BIM is transforming infrastructure development:
Enhanced Collaboration and Communication
BIM facilitates better collaboration among all stakeholders, including architects, engineers, contractors, and owners. By providing a single source of truth, it ensures that everyone has access to the most current and accurate information. This reduces misunderstandings and errors, leading to more efficient project execution. The ability to share models and data in real time enhances communication, making it easier to identify and resolve issues early in the project.
Tumblr media
Improved Design Quality and Visualization
With BIM, designers can create more accurate and detailed 3D models. This enhances the visualization of the project, allowing stakeholders to better understand the design and make informed decisions. The ability to simulate different scenarios and perform clash detection helps to identify potential problems before construction begins. This leads to better design quality and reduces the likelihood of costly rework.
Related blog: How BIM Can Help Revolutionize The Development Of Infrastructure Projects?
Cost and Time Savings
BIM enables more accurate cost estimation and project scheduling. By using BIM models, project teams can perform quantity takeoffs and cost analysis more efficiently. This helps in creating more reliable budgets and schedules. Additionally, BIM's ability to detect clashes and visualize the construction sequence minimizes delays and reduces the risk of unexpected costs. This results in significant time and cost savings over the life of the project.
Enhanced Project Management
BIM provides powerful tools for managing infrastructure projects. By integrating various aspects of the project into a single model, BIM enables more effective project management. Project managers can use BIM to track progress, manage resources, and ensure that the project stays on schedule and within budget. The ability to visualize the entire project and access real-time data enhances decision-making and helps to keep the project on track.
Better Sustainability and Facility Management
BIM supports sustainable design and construction practices. By using BIM models, project teams can analyze the environmental impact of different design options and make more sustainable choices. BIM also facilitates better facility management by providing a detailed digital representation of the building. This helps facility managers to operate and maintain the facility more efficiently, leading to longer building life and lower operating costs.
Case Studies and Real-World Examples
Many infrastructure projects around the world have successfully implemented BIM to achieve significant benefits. For example, the London Crossrail project used BIM to manage the design and construction of one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. The use of BIM helped to improve coordination among the project team, reduce errors, and save time and money. Similarly, the California High-Speed Rail project utilized BIM to enhance design quality and streamline project management.
Conclusion
BIM is transforming the development of infrastructure projects by enhancing collaboration, improving design quality, saving time and costs, and supporting better project management and sustainability. As the construction industry continues to adopt BIM, we can expect to see even more significant improvements in the way infrastructure projects are designed, built, and managed. By embracing BIM, project teams can deliver better outcomes and create more efficient, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure.

Should You Use Revit Server or Collaboration For Revit (C4R)?
Technological progress in the world of architecture and pre-construction design has led to significant achievements in software and collaboration; achievements that could only be dreamt of in the past. Projects today involve teams from around wide-ranging geographical areas – different towns, different states and different countries – simultaneously coordinating on the same project at the same time. These types of projects require a clear method of work-sharing that is efficient, transparent and extremely accurate. That’s where Revit Architecture used with Revit Server or Collaboration for Revit (C4R) for 3D BIM coordination plays an important role. Depending on the complexity and size of the project and the locations of the teams, either work-sharing method can be used.
With these two methods of Revit architectural services proving increasingly popular, we have examined both to see which is preferable. In essence, the two methods are:
1. Server-based worksharing – Revit Server (RS)
2. Cloud-based worksharing – Collaboration for Revit (C4R)
Revit Server (RS) is a server-based work-sharing method used over a wide area network (WAN). Central models are based in one or more Revit servers. These can be accessed using local Revit Server Accelerators, which offer better results during wide area communications.
Collaboration for Revit (C4R) is a cloud -based work-sharing method hosted in the cloud. BIM 360 Team (formally A360 Team) is a requirement for C4R. Team members can use a web browser to access BIM 360 Team if they are not using Revit. Then they will be able to preview models, upload and download other project documents, etc. With C4R, central models are stored in a file at a network location, with access for all team members.
Primarily, the workflows for both methods of Revit architectural services are almost the same, with the main difference being the different locations for storing the central model.
Features of Revit Servers
1. Creating Local Files – The Revit open dialog is used to create a local file from a Central model on Revit Server.
2. Work-sharing Monitor – An instant message application helps communicate with other team members.
3. Revit Server Administrator for Folder Management – This administrator through the open dialog in Revit creates new folders, moves or copies, cuts or pastes projects for Revit Server.
4. Overwriting Central Model – The central model must be saved with a new name, or it must be deleted or renamed.
5. Recent Files List – The Recently Used Files list will only display local files. Central models do not appear. 6. Restore Local Files – It is possible to roll back local files to a previously saved version, but this cannot be done with central models.
Revit Server runs on the concept of a central server hosting projects. The central model is split into folders and data streams with element permissions. The server communicates with local servers globally, which have the latest copies of project models. Local servers and the central server can be at the same location, and with network protocols, synchronising speed has been increased. So, those with access to a local server need not wait for data, even if they are outside the LAN, as updated versions are regularly streamed by the central server. Revit Server Administrator enables monitoring and review, allowing project and folder creations from a remote location.
A cloud-based application within Revit and on the web, Conceptual Energy Analysis (CEA), provides information about the sustainability of the project at early stages. After a design is created, a thermal analytical model is then devised. Materials, location shading, glazing and operating hours can be reviewed and the model is transferred to the cloud for calculations by Green Building Studio and the best possible environmental design is thus generated.
Revit Server Roles
Host: Revit Server is similar to a central server. The host would enable Revit Server instances geographically or organisationally to be central.
Accelerator: In this role, a Revit Server assimilates data from different sources. Members in the same local area network (LAN) as the Revit Server Accelerator enjoy better performance when connecting to central models.
Administrator: The Revit Server Administrator management tool is used to create, delete, rename and move folders and central models on Revit Server hosts and configures user or group level permissions.
To better understand how these roles function, let’s look at an example. If a company has its main office in London and others contributing to the project are in Bristol, Revit Server allows employees from both offices to work simultaneously on a Revit project file. This central file is saved in a local data server within its local area network (LAN). Individuals can access the central file on the data server. However, Revit automatically creates a copy of the central file on the individual client workstation, which is referred to as a local file, rather than open the central file. With subsequent changes, local files evolve differently from the central file. Hence, each local file is synchronised with the central file. This is better known as work-sharing.
In a LAN, load and sync speeds are fairly rapid, as the data is close to end users. When the same work-sharing occurs between two or more offices over the wide area network (WAN), the speeds of load and sync are slower. Revit Server lets two or more servers communicate across the WAN by caching (or replicating) the data on one server to the other. Thus, what is needed is to keep the data close to the end users. For this, each office must install a single instance of Revit Server on their data servers, creating a Revit Server Network.
The Revit Server in London could play host and administrator roles while the Revit Server in Bristol assumes the role of Accelerator. Thus, all central files would be in London and would be cached to Bristol. Using the Revit Server Administrator site via a web browser, the Revit Servers in the network can be administered.
What is C4R and what are the benefits?
When teams are working on a local area network (LAN), C4R, the cloud file-based work-sharing method, enables accurate performance. It does not need the installation of a Revit Server.
Similar to Revit Server, the C4R method uses cloud computing but this time also for storage and hosting of the model. Using BIM 360 Team, C4R provides access to, and collaboration on, central Revit models on the cloud to project teams across varied disciplines, locations and companies. This means that individuals or teams from any of the locations can add, delete or modify elements of the project at any time so that the alterations can be viewed by everyone else and be reviewed in a timely manner. In other words, C4R allows countrywide or international teams to work simultaneously across different time zones and collaborate in real-time.
Uses BIM 360 Team
C4R hosts a Revit model in a centralized location called the BIM 360 Team Hub. This location is a centralised storage place to share information. A BIM 360 Team Hub must be created before a model can be shared via C4R. Thus, the cloud can be used to share, store and communicate.
For Revit users, C4R is not separate software to install. It lives within Revit and provides new options in the ‘Collaborate’tab. Revit users will however need to be associated with a BIM 360 Team project in order to use C4R features.
Easy Communication
C4R Communicator is a chat feature in Revit, with extras. Communicator connects users in the same model, in a different model but same project, or in a completely different C4R project. Chats are in real time and communication includes sending messages, files, screen shots from Revit from one user to another and even the chat log to share with others. Another feature, the Timeline, tracks comments, who is synchronising in real time, who completed, and when it was completed.
Publishing Revit Models to BIM 360 Team
Since only Revit users can see changes after every sync, for those using BIM 360 Team, a Revit user needs to publish the Revit model to the BIM 360 Team so that they can see all the views and sheets and all BIM metadata in the Revit model.
C4R Features Integrated Project Delivery – C4R facilitates the sharing of server requirements and centralised systems by joint design ventures from separate locations. This accommodates the need for architects and engineers to communicate and share data seamlessly and practice qualified decision-making.
Cloud-based Technology – Since a majority of the tools in C4R are cloud-based, work methods and client support enjoy almost total flexibility, thus greatly reducing downtime and rework.
• Management – Models and users can be managed with permissions and restrictions set up in a BIM 360 Team project in Revit.
• BIM 360 Integration – Entire project teams, non-Revit users also, can view, comment, and mark up models through a web browser.
• Communicator Tool – Team members can communicate with direct, real-time chat in C4R, within BIM project models.
• Publishing Tool – Models in the cloud are published with the default 3D view and all 2D sheets, allowing communication between disciplines after updating changes.
Financially, the ROI from C4R projects saves an average of 30 minutes per individual team member every week. Over the course of an entire year, this could mean that C4R can virtually pay for itself.
Technical Issues and How Autodesk Supports C4R:
Bottlenecks in the code, capacity scaling under varying load, intermittent connectivity – Product teams across the cloud ensure that services have the right approaches and architecture to carry out their operations consistently and with high levels of reliability. Degradations or outages – Services are designed so that dependencies are ‘soft’ and don’t bring down core products.
Deviation of operational behaviour – Services are constantly logging operation results for ‘health checks’. Notifications of deviation of behaviour occur within minutes and can be rectified quickly. In addition, data trends are studied for usage patterns to improve capacity.
Overall, both Revit Server and C4R work-sharing methods have advantages and downsides, but depending on the organisation concerned and its specific needs, one may be more useful over the other. However, with the increased shift to subscription-based software licensing, C4R may be seen as the logical way forward for many firms that have not already invested in costly Revit server hardware and require easy to use and easy to operate cloud-based solutions for collaborating on their projects.

WSP Uses Advanced 3D Modeling to Optimize the Design of London’s Newest Iconic Skyscraper
Bentley’s RAM Software Provides Innovative Structural Solutions for Unique Geometry of One Blackfriars Tower
  Prime Location, Multiple Challenges
Considered one of Europe’s most iconic building projects, One Blackfriars London is a mixed-use development that features a 50-story residential tower as its centerpiece, an adjoining three-story podium housing a gym and retail facilities, and a boutique hotel with 161 rooms, all built over a three-story basement with a swimming pool, spa, and parking facilities. Developed by St. George and designed by Simpson Haugh Architects, the project is situated on the south side of Blackfriars Bridge overlooking the River Thames, offering spectacular views of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and Westminster’s Big Ben, and the houses of Parliament. WSP was appointed to provide structural modeling and engineering services.
The project site varied in depth and had remaining elements of a previously demolished building, which could not be removed without collapsing the surrounding infrastructure. Performing a 3D laser site survey enabled the team to understand the site challenges and design the new three-story basement down to 13 meters, fitting around the site’s constraints.
WSP also faced challenges designing temporary on-site client facilities, including developing structural solutions for the complex geometry of the 170-meter landmark building. MicroStation, RAM Concept, and RAM Structural System provided WSP an integrated BIM solution to streamline workflows and push the limits of structural design to create an elegant silhouette on London’s skyline.
3D Design Coordination Saves Time and Space
Given that St. George desired a strong, on-site marketing and sales presence, WSP designed a temporary three-story, steel-framed facility fitted with replica apartments to serve as the marketing suite. To support it at ground level, the team partially modeled the ground floor slab and supported the slab on plunge columns so that the three levels of the basement could be constructed around and underneath the marketing suite while in use. This piling configuration enabled temporary and permanent works to be combined and facilitated a top-down construction sequence. The interoperability of Bentley technology allowed WSP to share the 3D design models with the construction contractor for generating logistics plans and sequencing work packages. As the works reached the ground floor, the marketing suite was removed and the tower construction commenced.
To complicate matters, the rooftop structure of the tower housed the main building maintenance unit (BMU), which contained a shaft extending down into the multi-level penthouse floors. WSP worked with its in-house façade access consultants, sharing 3D MicroStation models to determine how to prevent the BMU from intruding on the penthouse space. Using the WSP model, contractors could fully understand the space and reduce the size of the BMU to a more compact unit.
In addition to coordinating with the contractors, WSP opted for a collaborative design process to analyze numerous options and determine innovative solutions to ensure structural integrity of the asymmetrically shaped tower. The design team used the architect’s 3D model in MicroStation and developed a framing skeleton for the model. Floor plate layouts were then extracted and seamlessly imported into RAM Concept, where multiple design iterations were analyzed and automated drawing productions generated for client and design team coordination. This process streamlined workflow and optimized optioneering, enabling various alternatives to be analyzed in half the time.
  Post-tensioned Design Adds Value
The geometry of the tower consists of a narrow base extending upward to a bulge, where the private viewing lounge offers panoramic views of London, and then slopes back in and continues rising upward. A multi-level penthouse accommodates the top five floors of the 50-story building. The tower includes 274 luxury apartments, all varying in layout with floor plates of different shapes and sizes and no repetition throughout the building. Not only did WSP need a structural solution for the varied floor plans, but it also needed to design support columns that offered unobstructed views without intruding on the apartment spaces.
Based on the MicroStation architectural model and using RAM Concept, WSP determined that the optimal structural solution was a combination of fitting reinforced concrete blade columns between the party walls and circular feature columns. With all the various sized apartments, the team needed to determine the location for the columns that best suited the individual layouts while still ensuring structural integrity. Bentley’s interoperable technology optimized the column configuration and automatically generated arrangement drawings that were shared with the contractor for construction.
Finally, with RAM Concept, WSP designed the apartment floor slabs as thin as possible. The team modeled and designed 225-millimeter thick, post-tensioned concrete floor slabs, which proved to be the most cost-effective solution based on minimum structural zone. It reduced the self-weight of the floors, which proved the most cost-effective solution based on minimum structural zone. It reduced the self-weight of the floors, which allowed for maximum slab spans and floor-to-ceiling heights to increase apartment value. The post-tensioned slab design saved 10 percent in overall concrete volume for the floors alone, equivalent to five additional floor plates.
  Interoperability Ensures Stability
Using RAM Concept, WSP conducted finite element modeling to analyze the entire building, testing stability against wind and numerous forces. The team applied the software’s meshing algorithm to accurately predict the floor slab concrete behavior and integrated it with other software, designing the stability system and producing an overall building model.
A glittering pinnacle of One Blackfriars Tower is the multi-level penthouse. Tasked with finding a structural framing solution for the most expensive part of the building, the design team used RAM software to develop structural support for the glass rooftop. With Bentley’s structural design and analysis software, WSP introduced a transfer slab to support the entire dead weight of the roof cap and restrained it with horizontal and vertical restraints.
The team conducted a detailed deflection cap analysis that included testing the structural robustness of the main BMU on various transfer slabs. The interoperability of Bentley software optimized analysis, ensuring structural stability of the unique building geometry and achieving an iconic design.
  RAM Optimizes Structural Solutions
Consistent with the elegant design of the tower, the architects were keen to have feature columns at the base of the building. The columns were narrow at the base and extended upward 10 meters in height, which forced the team to adopt high-strength concrete to ensure optimal axial stiffness and strength. However, the client also wanted a two-level mezzanine above the lobby without any of the columns interfering with the open lobby space. Using RAM Structural System, WSP designed a steel framework and hung the entire framing system from the first residential floor slab. With RAM Concept, the design team could enhance the thickness of the first level slab to support the frame loads.
WSP faced additional challenges of ensuring structural support for the post-tensioned floor slabs for the different apartment layouts. After conducting numerous design iterations, the team adopted a combined solution of walking columns, raking columns, and split reverse-Y columns. As the raking columns also generated horizontal forces, WSP use the floor plates to tie the column horizontal forces to the building.
Further up the tower structure are two smaller BMUs that required a variation in column design to avoid clashes as the columns rose from the floors below. RAM Concept enabled the team to determine an optimal solution, using reverse-Y transfer columns to allow space for the BMUs but still support the floors.
Finally, as with any high-rise building, lateral stability is a crucial issue. And with residential buildings like One Blackfriars Tower, the building cores tend to be smaller compared to commercial buildings. To ensure lateral stability, WSP designed a staggered outrigger system that extended out and attached to the columns. This solution also provided the construction team complete access to each floor.
Pushing the Limits of Structural Design
Bentley’s RAM software saved considerable time throughout all stages of the project. The technology allowed multiple iterations and design changes to be explored and adopted from the initial design proposal stage through construction, while ensuring compliance with European design codes. Within a short period of time, WSP achieved an efficient, cost-effective structural solution incorporating longer, thinner slabs and fewer columns. RAM enabled the design team to push structural design to the limit, providing innovative solutions for each bespoke room and floor.
Using Bentley’s integrated 3D modeling applications enabled WSP to design and deliver an iconic landmark for London and reinforces the notion that with the right capabilities, anything is possible and there is no limit as to what can be achieved. One Blackfriars will inspire the next generation of designers to think outside the box and promote London as the capital for world-class architecture and engineering.
According to Aret Garip, technical director, structural project manager and design lead, WSP UK, “Bentley’s RAM Concept and MicroStation software packages enabled WSP to design and deliver one of the most iconic projects in Europe. The software was very effective to coordinate and design cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for the benefit of the client and the local community. The project stands proud as a centerpiece for architectural and engineering excellence.”
