Participatory Culture (Siti Syuhaida)

In ‘Social Media as Participatory Culture’, Fuchs (2014) critiques Jenkins’ simplistic view of participation as a solely cultural notion and argues that it should be expanded with a political view through participatory democracy. He asserts that Jenkin doesn’t take into account the ownership of companies or platforms in the media where profit, class and capitalism is involved. While individuals are free to create content and participate in media, big corporations like Google still monopolize the scene where they can still control and manipulate how media is consumed by the masses. Fuchs also believes that the connection between a fandom of popular culture and political activities is not immediate and not simply ‘micro politics within popular culture’. There are many more negative realities of online communities and Jenkin’s account of participatory culture ignores this fact. Furthermore, Fuchs argues that exploitation of users’ digital labour should not be reduced or brushed aside just because users enjoy making the content or gain social benefits from using the platform. Overall, Fuchs states that Jenkin’s arguments are very much idealistic and celebratory of the participation culture and ignores the negative aspects of the media such as exploitation, privacy violations and many more realities which would be raised in a participatory democracy. 

I agree with Fuchs’s argument that there is a need to move away from celebrating participatory culture to participatory democracy instead and that there are numerous negative realities of online communities. Especially since big corporations actually own and manipulate many aspects of media that lead to the commercialization and commodification of media, it is necessary to evaluate where users actually stand in media and how our participation actually contributes to media. For example, the ‘#ShotbyiPhone’ campaign by Apple is a form of participatory culture as Apple invites users to share their best photos and videos for a chance to be featured on Apple’s media channels and even billboards across the country. This campaign has proven to be a very successful one as they received favourable responses from its users and a plethora of submissions. However, it is important to scrutinize such campaigns and understand the real intentions behind such social media campaigns. While this may seem like an attractive campaign for users to participate and possibly get recognition for their work, Apple can be seen as simply exploiting users’ content to get free publicity. Furthermore, Apple added that the photos chosen would then belong to Apple and no longer to the user anymore. This shows how big corporations, like Apple, are making use of participatory culture in the media for their own benefits and profits. Apple is not the only company who has engaged in such campaigns hence, I do agree that big corporations are monopolizing the scene and it is important to move to a participatory democracy. 

However, I would like to expand on this point as I believe that it is not just big corporations but also smaller ones that are increasingly gaining power and control over the media today. For instance, many popular YouTubers today actually sign on to entertainment labels or management companies after they become famous and start receiving work. A case in point would be the Team 10 management company who manages popular American YouTuber, Jake Paul and many other popular YouTubers. Interestingly, Team 10 created a ‘YouTuber house’, where YouTubers under Team 10 would stay in house together and make content. This house was described as a ‘social incubator for social media talent’ so that these YouTuber could learn how to create content, collaborate and eventually create viral content under the same roof. Their Team 10 videos turned out to be a hit and many of them garnered millions of views as their young audiences started becoming interested and invested in the personalities living in the Team 10 house. They garnered millions of views and subscribers and hence held a significant amount of influence over their audience. This example proves that corporations, big or small, can influence the media today. I think that there will always be an upper hand controlling users in the media, no matter how big or powerful that hand is. Overall, I agree with Fuchs' arguments and I think it's not just big corporations monopolizing the media but more and more smaller companies that are gaining surmountable power and influence over media and consumers today.
