“Man Shoots Doctor Kills Self At Southampton,” Owen Sound Sun Times. June 16, 1930. Page 1 & 5. ---- HUTCHESON JACKSON KILLS HIMSELF AFTER SHOOTING DR PATRICK SCOTT HIS PHYSICIAN, THROUGH HEAD TWICE ----- Well Known Southampton Physician in Owen Sound Hospital in Very Precarious Condition at Present Time ---- WAS MAKING PROFESSIONAL CALL ---- Doctor Who Was in Attendance to Man Suffering From Nervous Trouble, is Shot Down While Making Call --- A report on the condition of Dr. Patrick J. Scott, of Southampton, who was shot by Hutcheson Jackson, on Sunday morning, is to the effect that at noon Monday he is making excellent progress at the Owen Sound General and Marine Hospital. His attending physician, Dr. T. M. Middlebro, stated that his temperature was normal, and he was in good spirits, although it is difficult fro him to take nourishment because of his sore throat and broken jaw, and he is unable to do much talking. Should there be no infection he will recover is due course, but will be confined to the hospital for some little time. ---- The town of Southampton which has been very much in the public eye of late, was aroused in its very depths on Sunday morning, when it became known that an attempted murder followed by suicide had taken place during the early hours of the day, in which of its prominent citizens were the victims. Dr. Patrick J. Scott well-known physician, is in the Owen Sound General and Marine jpspital with two bullet holes through his head and a very precarious condition, while Hutcheson Jackson, is neighbor, lies dead in Southampton, having taken his own life after he had attempted to take that of Dr. Scott.
The double tragedy has aroused the quiet lakeside town such as nothing else has for a long time, and it was the chief subject of comment among the residents all day Sunday, and much sincere sympathy is expressed for the friends and relatives of both men.
Jackson Insane There is no doubt that Jackson, who was a man 60 years of age, was out of his mind when he made his murderous attack on Dr. Scott, who was his attending physician. He suffered a nervous breakdown several weeks ago, but his condition was not considered such that it would be necessary to keep a close watch on him, as he gave no signs of violence at any time. On Saturday night, however, he was unusually nervous and he went for a motor ride with his friends and neighbor, Malcolm Matheson, who remained with him until 2 o'clock in the morning. Jaackson arose at his usual time on Sunday morning, had his breakfast, and went around the outside of the house. No person ever suspected that he even owned a revolver but when Dr. Scott, who had been treating him, put in his appearance around 9 o'clock, Jackson greeted him with the words "You’ll not put poison in my medicine" and whipping a Smith & Wesson .38 calibre revolver from his jacket when the doctor was quite close, he fired two shots, both of which took effect.
Course of Bullets One bullet entered the head about an inch in front of the right ear, smashed the jaw, passed through both tonsils, and came out in exactly the same spot on the opposite side of the head. The other bullet entered the thick part of the neck at the rear, passed through just a short distance above the spine and also came out exactly opposite to where it went in. Dr. Scott showed remarkable grit and stamina after he was shot, as after he turned and walked across a small field to his own home and sat down on the rear steps bleeding profusely. He was perfectly conscious, and asked that Dr. Laird he sent for and when the latter arrived he at once saw the seriousness of his condition and accompanied by Chief of Police Norman Murray, he was hurried to the Owen Sound General and Marine hospital where he received further treatment from Dr. T. H. Middlebro, and other physicians in the city.
Fired Shot in Brain Soon after the shooting of Dr. Scott another shot was heard, and this time it was Jackson again, only he had turned the deadly weapon on himself. He placed the muzzle close into the corner of his right eye and pulled the trigger, the result being that his brains, were blown out and death was instantaneous. He was about six feat from his kitchen door at the rear of the house when he fired the fatal shot. The revolver was found close to his hand by Chief of Police Murray, who had heard the shot and was hurrying to tho scene when notified of the first shooting. The gun was covered with blood and the face of the dead man was badly scorched, so close did he put the gun to it. Dr. Laird, who was a coroner, after investigating the circumstances, decided that an inquest was unnecessary, it being quite apparent that Hackson had taken his own life.
The Longe Connection The shooting of Dr. Scott recalls the fact that he is one of the principal witnesses in connection with the Longe case, as he was the physician first on the ground after Earl Yoemans had been struck down in the lonely woods on Thursday, April 10. and for the murder of whom Harry Longe will be tried at the Fall assizes at Walkerton. In this connection it is alleged that the nervous breakdown of Jackson was due to some extent to his relations with the Longe family and that the house in which he resided had been purchased from Mrs. Edward Longe, mother of Harry Longe. There were many negotiations rewarding the sale of the property due to the fact that it was originally Crown lands and considerable difficulty was experienced in securing the deed. These things had preyed greatly on Jackson’s mind of late.
Well Known Residents Jackson was unmarried but made his home with his sister, Mrs. Donald Munn and they resided on Lansdowne Street . He is also survived by three half-brothers, who reside elsewhere in Ontario. Jackson was a fisherman and sometimes worked on his own behalf while he sometimes worked for Malcolm Matheson, his next-door neighbor. He was industrious, and it is said that he was financially in excellent shape. He had lived in Southampton nearly all his days and was looked upon as a good citizen.
Dr. Scott, who is nearly 65 years of age, has been a practicing physician in Southampton for a great many years. He served with the Canadian troops during the Great War, and rendered excellent service as an army doctor. He is also quite prominent in Masonic circles in Southampton. His many friends will sincerely hope for his early and complete recovery. He has one son, a civil engineer, who resides in Quebec, and he has been sent for and is expected to arrive here on Monday night.

1831 Sunday 9 October
7 40/.. 10 1/2
Incurred a cross last night and another this morning thinking of π [Mariana] lay three quarters hour this morning about -
Very fine morning - Fahrenheit 63°. now at 7 50/.. - down at 8 1/2 - breakfast - out at 9 1/2 for an hour - walked along the town and the marine parade - the marine hotel evidently the one to go to and not very far from the quay - go by daylight, and then easy to get comfortably settled - some very nice little gothic places far better than cottages along the marine parade - 1 or 2 gable-ended houses with gothic 2 stories of windows 4 lights each - 2 projecting in front and one on each side
[Anne’s drawing of the gothic windows]
- that might do very well for the gable ends at Shibden then walked thro' the town to where we landed last night from East Cowes - the Medina (medeena) or Newport river, the wooded hills and towns creeping along the margin of each, very pretty - Cowes too, is the yatch station - I should prefer it to Ryde?
On going back to the Inn, the driver came to be paid - he asked 6/. a day - had Mr. Webb, the master of the house up - he said a man should have 5/6 a day for that their masters paid them nothing but a boy like that (like the one who drove me) should have 4/. so gave him after that rate -
Off in the Malmesbury Steamer from Cowes at 10 3/4 - very pretty look back upon the town (West Cowes) see little of East Cowes and hardly any of the river - leave it hid behind West Cowes - just get a peep of the top of East Cowes (Mr. Nash) he there because the flag flying, and of the top, soon after, of Norris Castle where the duchess of Kent's flag was flying - At 11 1/4 pass the little thick low round Calshot Castle (like Hurst Castle) and enter the Southampton river - the little thin tall Castle Tower we saw before was Eaglehurst - small boat from the Thames landed at 12 5/.. -
Back at the Crown Inn (very civil people but very b.g. 2nd. rate, tavern-kind of house) - at 12 10/.. - carriage packed - read this morning's globe, every column in mourning for the throwing out of the reform bill by a majority of 41 lords - all the bps. [bishops] against but Norwich and Chichester - Lord Wynford spoke much and well against the bill -
Off from Southampton commonly here shortened to Southton at 1 3/4 - fine looking town - in 7 or 8 mins. [minutes] at Northam bridge 1st. and 2nd (a handsome wooden 5 arch-bridge and then at a very short distance a bridge (wood?) of one arch) both over the lake-like river Itchen which is here very beautifully skirted with wood and gentlemens seats, and altogether a beautiful scene with shipping and Southampton to the left behind us -
At 2 10/.. on Netley common, a heathery moor, bounded (right) by fine wood thro' which beautiful peeps of the Southampton river - poor land in all directions about Southampton, even along the beautiful banks of its river - land here almost as poor (but not so white sandy) as from Poole to Swanage - all the land along the coast from Southampton to Weymouth poor even if no farther, which I have not seen - at 2 1/2 fine view of Calshot castle and across the channel - Cowes and just see Ryde - and then in a minute or 2 get into enclosed land again - at 2 38/.. Bursledon bridge (wood) over wide lake that goes to Botley 2 miles left and to the Southampton river right - very picturesque good village scattered round its margin, chiefly whitish straw-thatched ivy-covered houses -
At 2 50/.. Titchfield common and from here and afterwards fine views of the Isle of Wight - could distinguish the watch tower on St. Catherine's hill - at 3 1/4 pass thro' one end of Titchfield apparently neat little town - Fareham at 3 42/.. one long neat, good street - change horses at Harris's far end of the town, having passed the better looking Inn, a large white hart - just below the Inn cross bridge over lake-like water with neat houses round its edge and wood and vessels - very pretty as at Bursledon - then rise little hill and fine view of the water and shipping and of Gosport or Portsmouth or both -
At 4 turned down the pretty little neat village of Porchester to the castle and there at 4 5/.. - walked about in the castle yard and could find nobody till I went out and got a man to take me to the concierge of the castle who was busy shewing about some people - the parish church is in the castle yard - the Saxon arch of the great west door is strikingly beautiful - the north side of the church and roof too very much covered over with ivy - went to the top of the great Keep Tower 103 feet high and 7 stories - in this and the smaller square Tower 8000 French prisoners were lodged during the last war over whom 300 soldiers mounted guard every day - the part where queen Elizabeth lived quite ruined - the great square Keep Tower said to be Roman Saxon and norman architecture - not easy to me to distinguish the 3 periods - Low water on the sea would have washed the south wall of the Porchester castle court - just out of the village of Porchester, the road lies along the low narrow gravelly beach a large surface beyond it being all green as the water makes it and close, left, is Portsea down (or Portsdown?) -
The Keep Tower at Portchester Castle [Image Source]
At 5 1/2 turn left thro' the neat good little village of Cosham down to Portsmouth - do not see any stayable Inn in Cosham - enter Portsmouth at 6 5/.. under two deep arched gateways, a regularly fortified (double walled with boulevard and trees innermost) town, the only one I ever saw in England; nor was I even that such an one existed -
Alighted at the George hotel at 6 10/.. - at last a good first rate Inn again - what a comfort - handsome 3 windowed sitting room, so ordered a dinner soup-potatos and broccoli, and boiled bread pudding and 2 bottles soda water - all good - dinner from 7 25/.. to 8 - before and after wrote out the whole of this of today, and inked over and settled accounts till now 9 10/.. -
Found letter this morning at the Crown Southampton post office date 7th. instant 2 1/2 satisfactory pp. [pages] from Miss H- [Hobart] Richmond park - both she and Lady S- [Stuart] were 'Terribly annoyed at what we thought the overthrow or throw over'....all quite comfortable again - Miss H- [Hobart] thinking it a great triumph that her wishes should be stronger than Lady S- de R-'s [Stuart de Rothesay's] arguments - says Lady Alicia (Gordon) will not stay more than 3 nights and if I wait till the 13th. may be sure of my bed again at the Lodge - very fine day - Fahrenheit 64°. now at 9 1/4 p.m.
[Margin] Saw Chichester cathedral from Porchester castle

27th International DeLorean Meeting, Hamburg - 24-28 July 2019
24th July
On the morning of 24th July I set off from North London to the Eurotunnel terminals outside of Folkestone. I filled up with fuel at the Tesco petrol station nearby where I also found Mike (Mec), Dan and Samantha who had come from Essex. We were also in contact with Justin and Ben who came down the night before and stayed at the Holiday Inn around the corner. We therefore decided to meet them at their hotel. Mike K and George were coming from Southampton and arrived at the hotel shortly after us.
At the Holiday Inn.
I decided to fill up on breakfast before the main part of this epic journey.
Mike K and George had personalised convoy T-Shirts made up for us.
Radios were distributed, Roger!
Inside the Eurotunnel Terminal in Folkestone. I was extremely hot, late 30 degrees celsius. Engine bay covers opened to aid engine cooling.
My 16606.
After being called we lined up ready for boarding.
The time came to board but as we approached the train someone had miscalculated since the train was full before we got there. We were led back up the opposite ramp over and down onto the parallel platform and back up the ramp and made to wait. This was testing with no functional handbrake.
I made it up the ramp and managed to park on a relatively flat area. Handbrake dilemma avoided.
Justin and the convoy gang out of their cars awaiting loading of the next train.
After much time in direct sunlight in these high temperatures we finally boarded.
Inside the carriage. Fortunately we all fitted within one carriage and thus had it to ourselves.
After the 35 minute crossing and debarring we were on our way. Firstly the stretch from the Eurotunnel terminal to the Belgium border.
Only 10 minutes in to the continental run Dan’s front passenger side wheel started smoking.
We pulled off into the nearest petrol station. After jacking it up and investigating it transpired that the brake calliper had ceased on. Once cooled and freed we where on our way again.
Into Belgium and another reason to pull over. This time Mike K and George had fuelling issues.
The heat was the main culprit but this still needed to be sorted.
The fuel relay was replaced. Testing initially looked promising but this turned out not to be the answer.
The front trunk was cleared.
With George getting into the trunk the team proceeded to inspect and then replace the fuel pump.
This appeared to have worked... We were then on our way again. By now we were several hours behind the intended schedule.
As the sun set further problems occurred. Mike’s car was still experiencing fuelling issues. The common factor to all the fuelling issues was the heat.
Once more, as the fuel cooled and the evening brought somewhat cooler temperatures we continued on to Arnhem in The Netherlands.
As we come close to entering The Netherlands this shot of 16606 and the hot air ballon was taken.
In Arnhem we made our way to the Holiday Inn about four hours later than intended.
Once in the car park, 16606 was left overnight.
25th July
The following morning we met up with Mark from The Netherlands and set off in convoy once more. As if yesterday wasn’t hot enough today would see temperatures hit 40 degrees celsius.
Part way along Mec, Mike and George got separated from the rest of us. It turned out Mike and George were facing further feeling issues. We pulled in to a service area and waited about an hour for the stragglers to join us. After refreshments and refuelling to put cool fuel into the car we set off again.
Not more than a few miles further on and Mike and George had to pull off the on-ramp to the autobahn outside Osnabrück where fortunately there was a pull-off area. This time Mike decided to call it a day and get the car recovered.
The rest of the convoy headed off while George hitched a lift to get a rental car and Mike waited for the recovery vehicle.
Meanwhile the rest of us steamed on to Hamburg making good use of the lack of German Autobahn speed limits. All I know was my speedometer needle stopped at 85mph.
Just around 5pm we arrived at the hotel and registered for the event.
That evening we were invited to the formal opening dinner by the German Delorean Owners Club where we were treated to a talk by Barrie Wills among other speakers.
26th July
The next morning circa 38 DeLorean’s set off for a visit to Lüneberg, south west of Hamburg, for a visit to this historic town.
In Lüneberg we had permission to park up on the otherwise pedestrianised town hall square.
Barrie Wills posed for these pictures with me and 16606.
It was also necessary to cover the windscreen to try to inhibit the direct scorching sunlight.
The owner of the former DeLorean of Sammy Davis Jr. was also present.
Other diverse DeLorean's were present including the above DeLorean World Tour car.
After much time kicking the tyres in the square we started our town tours.
Mid afternoon we set off for a location alongside the river Elbe for photo opportunities and ice cream.
That evening the UK contingent that was by then also joined by the “Flyers”, including Al, Alex, Arran, Carl, Julian and Lisa and went to the Dom, a massive fairground in the centre of Hamburg.
27th July
Saturday was Back to the Future day. We set off from the hotel to the Auswanderermuseum (Emigration Museum) BallinStadt Hamburg which had been turned in to Hill Valley, California.
Biff was there ready to apply those “two” coats of wax.
Biff’s Ford was also present.
George McFly’s BMW was also receiving the Biff Tannen Auto Detailing treatment.
The Time Machine made it to Twin Pines Mall.
Below, Stephen Wynn of the current DeLorean Motor Company was checking out the Time Machine.
16606 was having the Hill Valley experience.
16606 crashed through the twin pines but made such an impact that even the lone pine fell over leaving no pines in its’ wake.
Refreshments were courtesy of an unwanted “Welcome Home” cake that Lorraine McFly discarded after Uncle Joey failed to make parol! Pepsi Perfect was also on hand for liquid stimulation.
Saturday evening was the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance at the Old Timer Petrol Station in Hamburg.
Music was provided by Mikelonetwo.
28th July
Sunday morning meant the return journey, in one stretch, back to London. Mike and George were flying home which therefore left just four UK DeLorean's in the convoy. Whilst still warm, the weather was considerably more changeable.
Refuelling in Belgium.
Due to the intensity of the journey to ensure we made it in time for our allotted train not many photos were taken, however in the end we arrived in good time at the Eurotunnel terminal in France.
Upon Check in we were offered and took a train approximately one hour earlier. Once past security we parked up awaiting our call for boarding.
When called, which was incidentally about the time of our originally booked train due to delays, we followed the route to the platforms where we boarded the train.
Once more, and despite one DeLorean less, we had a carriage to ourselves.
As we arrived back in Blighty we each set off to our respective destinations, into the sunset.

Take Me To Luton Airport
Visiting London is an exciting adventure, not the least of which is the challenge of finding your way from one of the airports to your hotel room. Whether you fly into the city or an airport on the outskirts, deciding how to best traverse the maze of streets, bridges and tunnels with your luggage in tow can range from a convenient Heathrow Airport taxi waiting to take you and your bags directly to your destination to public transportation that gets you in the general vicinity of your hotel.
London Heathrow
Located 20 miles (32 km) from Central London, Heathrow is London's busiest airport. A Heathrow taxi averages £40 to £60 for a 15 to 20-minute ride from the terminal to hotels in Central London. The cheapest ways to travel into town is the London Underground, Heathrow Connect or Express railways. Take me to Heathrow Taxi Cost
Gatwick Airport
The second largest airport in London, Gatwick is 28.4 miles (45.7 km) from Central London. You can take the non-stop Gatwick Express that takes 30 minutes and runs to Victoria Station every 15 minutes. A taxi ride costs about £90 and can take between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.
London Stansted
The third largest airport in London, Stansted, is located 38 miles (61.15 km) northeast of London. A reputable mini-cab costs around £120 for an hour-long ride to Central London. The Stansted Express provides the quickest access with a 46-minute journey to Liverpool Street Station.
London Luton
Though traditionally a holiday charter airport, the Luton Airport also hosts commercial flights and is 32 miles (51 km) from Central London. It takes about 60 to 75 minutes by taxi with an average fare of £80. The First Capital Connect runs six trains an hour to five different London stations and takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your final destination.
London City Airport
The smallest and closest airport to the city centre, this commuter airport is about six miles (9.5 km) from Central London. A taxi costs from £25 to £30 and takes 15 to 30 minutes to get to the heart of town or five to 10 minutes to get to destinations like Canary Wharf. The Dockland's Light Railway runs every 10 minutes during business hours and takes 22 minutes to reach Canning town, where travellers can catch the Central Line.
London Southend Airport
Most convenient to Olympic Village, this commuter airport is serviced by the rail via a 47-minute ride. A taxi costs around £50 for the hour ride to Central London.
Southampton Airport and Birmingham Airports are located well outside of London but considered by some as an alternative to the busy Take me to Heathrow Taxi

With COVID compressing the schedule, this could be the most competitive season ever
If 2020-21 was a standard season, the Premier League would have already performed 4 matches by now. Euro 2020 would have been performed over the summer time, preseason excursions would have introduced Europe’s largest groups to america, and gamers could be settled at their new groups with the switch deadline within the rearview mirror.
After all, little or no about 2020 has been regular. As a result of affect of the coronavirus, the Neighborhood Protect — the standard curtain-raiser for the Premier League season — occurred only one week after final season’s Champions League Closing.
The Premier League kicks off once more on Saturday, a matter of hours after a few of its largest stars have returned from worldwide responsibility. The preseason is virtually non-existent. High-flight gamers have by no means had so little relaxation and preparation time heading into a brand new season.
And, sadly, they may barely get a second to come back up for air between now and subsequent summer time.
The 2020-21 Premier League marketing campaign will, if all goes to plan, conclude on Could 23, 2021, with the intention to give ample preparation time for the delayed Euro 2020 match, which is able to begin three weeks later. This implies the 38-game season can be condensed by almost a month.
Fixture congestion is a typical grievance amongst Premier League managers, and they’re about to be caught in gridlock.
The fixture glut stemming from the coronavirus pandemic may damage Premier League powers like Liverpool and assist groups like Everton who’re chasing European spots. (Photograph by Simon Stacpoole/Offside/Offside through Getty Pictures)
The authorities are doing what they will to ease the congestion. The winter break, which was efficiently launched final season, is not going to happen. The FA Cup is scrapping replays, whereas the League Cup is lowering its two-legged semifinals to single matches.
Nonetheless, when cups and worldwide breaks are factored in, each single midweek all through the season has been allotted to a match day. Each single one.
Nowhere is the fixture pileup extra evident than with Tottenham, whose opening recreation Sunday can be adopted by a grueling midweek journey to Bulgaria for a Europa League qualifier after which a visit to Southampton a couple of days later. All informed, Spurs face the potential of 9 video games in 20 days by way of September and October. Jose Mourinho will virtually definitely need to create two separate beginning XIs to outlive this early onslaught. Harry Kane, a conventional gradual starter in a home marketing campaign, will fairly actually have to hit the bottom operating.
Story continues
On account of their deep runs in final season’s European competitions, the Champions League and Europa League, Manchester Metropolis and Manchester United have each been granted exemptions to overlook the opening weekend of Premier League fixtures. United and Metropolis will as an alternative start their campaigns on September 19 and 21 respectively.
This reprieve could also be welcome for the Manchester groups, nevertheless it additionally means they should catch up sooner or later throughout a season the place there can be only a few viable alternatives to take action.
In 2018-19, the latest undisturbed marketing campaign, Metropolis performed 60 video games. If they’d reached the Champions League last, it could have been 63. The concept of taking part in a lot in such a condensed house will possible give Pep Guardiola anxiousness; in any case, his lack of depth defensively is a key cause Metropolis ceded the latest Premier League title to Liverpool.
In the end, the fixture pileup may have a detrimental impact on the Premier League’s representatives in Europe. Bayern Munich performed simply 52 video games final season whereas successful the treble. The extra relaxation afforded by a 34-team Bundesliga will put Germans groups at a definite benefit.
A jam-packed schedule additionally suggests there can be much more parity inside the Premier League. Given the circumstances, it appears much less possible that Liverpool or Metropolis will break free from the pack and make a the title race a foregone conclusion by February.
The Premier League’s behemoths can be taking part in extra matches, and can be spreading themselves even thinner. Groups chasing them will typically have a significantly better probability of maintaining, and bridging the hole of monetary disparity. Liverpool specifically might battle to keep up their livid urgent recreation with so few respites from the motion.
Their crosstown rivals Everton, in the meantime, haven’t any European commitments, and are clearly dedicated to spending large this summer time. Carlo Ancelotti’s facet might not be topped champions, however they may have a chance to sneak into the highest six spots. The identical could also be mentioned for Wolves, who may also be freed from the European competitions that arguably hampered their home ambitions final season.
One other blow to the richer groups is the vote against allowing five substitutes in the 2020-21 season. Such a rule would have benefited deeper squads who may unfold out recreation time throughout competitions. With out 5 subs, it’s extra conceivable that lower-half groups can have more energizing legs than the large boys.
After all, there stays little monetary parity throughout the Premier League. It’s very a lot a case of the haves and the have-even-mores. And the bookmakers are definitely positioning Man Metropolis and Liverpool as outliers within the title race.
Nonetheless, when fixture congestion turns to fixture gridlock, it’s the lesser groups who might discover it simpler to weave by way of site visitors.

3rd Test: England's James Anderson reaches 599 wickets as Pakistan dig in | Cricket News

3rd Test: England's James Anderson reaches 599 wickets as Pakistan dig in | Cricket News
SOUTHAMPTON: England bowler James Anderson moved one shy of 600 Test wickets as he struck late on a frustrating and mainly forgettable fourth day of the third Test against Pakistan on Monday. The 38-year-old, looking to become the first pace bowler to reach that landmark, had opener Abid Ali lbw for a painstaking 42 late on in a weather-shortened day at Southampton. Pakistan, who followed on after being bowled out for 273 in reply to England’s first innings 583-8 declared, ended the day on 100-2, still requiring 210 runs to make England bat again. England are looking to wrap up a 2-0 series win although Tuesday’s weather forecast is for heavy rain. Pakistan began the day having not started their second innings and crept along to 41 without loss before rain forced the players off for an early lunch. With England looking flat, both Pakistan openers looked comfortable although Anderson was denied a wicket in his third over of the day when Shan Masood edged behind but Jos Buttler failed to pouch what looked like a routine catch. When play resumed some three hours later after ground staff mopped up the pitch, it was Anderson’s partner in crime Stuart Broad who made the initial breakthrough, nipping one back to Masood who was out lbw for 18 not playing a shot. Despite the lack of runs it was the longest opening stand against England since June 2016, spanning 23.4 overs. Spinner Dom Bess whirled away without success in a soporific afternoon session as Ali edged towards a half century. But with the old ball finally beginning to swing, Anderson then pinned him in front of his stumps and umpire Michael Gough raised his finger. Pakistan reviewed but the ball was shown to be just clipping leg stump. Anderson only managed one more over, however, before bad light and rain ended the day’s play with Pakistan’s captain Azhar Ali, a centurion in the first innings, on 29. Anderson will hope that the weather forecast for Tuesday improves so that he gets the chance to reach another milestone. Already England’s leading Test wicket taker, Anderson is behind only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (800) of Sri Lanka, Australia’s Shane Warne (708) and India’s Anil Kumble (619).

New Zealand beat England to take Test series
England 303 (Burns 81, Lawrence 81*) & 122 (Wagner 3-18, Henry 3-36) New Zealand 388 (Young 82, Conway 80, Taylor 80, Broad 4-48) & 41-2 New Zealand won by eight wickets Scorecard
England’s dismal second-Test defeat was confirmed inside an hour on the fourth morning at Edgbaston, giving New Zealand a 1-0 series win.
The home side lost their last wicket to the first ball of the day, Olly Stone edging behind off Trent Boult.
It meant New Zealand had only 38 runs to chase, which they did inside 11 overs to win by eight wickets.
England go down to their first home series defeat since 2014, when Sri Lanka won a two-match series 1-0.
It is New Zealand’s first success in England in 22 years and leaves them in fine fettle heading into the World Test Championship final against India at the Ageas Bowl that starts on Friday.
England move on to limited-overs matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan before a five-Test series against India begins in August.
England left scrambling for answers
For some time, England have been saying they are building towards this winter’s Ashes series, but, gradually, this team is finding problems and losing answers.
Not once in 2021 have England fielded a full-strength Test side. They began the year with three successive victories but have now lost four of their past five.
Yes, there have been injuries to Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, while the need for resting Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran has been explained as a way to manage workloads and protect players from issues related to the Covid era.
Still, even with Stokes and Buttler unavailable, England have fielded a near full-strength top six in this series and their batting has been abject.
Not only that, but their catching has been woeful and the spin of Jack Leach has been curiously ignored in both Tests against New Zealand.
England have been adamant they have a plan, that their Test side will come together fit and firing when it matters most.
The signs are it is becomingly increasingly difficult to make good on that promise.
Edgbaston left unfulfilled
Off the field this has been a comforting return to something approaching normality, with 18,000 raucous fans inside Edgbaston on each of the first three days.
For that reason, it is a great shame for the fans who began arriving at 09:00 BST on Sunday that there was so little cricket to enjoy.
At 112-9 overnight, 37 ahead, the best England could hope for was to stretch the match as long as possible.
Instead, Stone fenced Boult into the gloves of Tom Blundell, leaving most inside the ground – including New Zealand – laughing at the ridiculousness of it all.
Stuart Broad at least continued his fine form by having Devon Conway nick behind, and Will Young chopped on off Stone, but these only delayed the inevitable.
Spectators at least got a full refund because there were fewer than 15 overs played, while England’s opening Euro 2020 match against Croatia at 14:00 will be shown on a big screen, but that seems scant consolation for a lost day of Test cricket.
Brilliant New Zealand show England the way
If there remained any doubts whether New Zealand will provide stiff competition to India in the World Test Championship final, they have been cast aside in two Tests where they comprehensively outplayed England.
Given their preparations over the past two weeks, New Zealand may even arrive in Southampton as favourites to win.
Their batsmen gave England a lesson in playing late, playing straight and valuing their wickets. Their bowlers maintained a fuller length. Whereas England’s catching is a lottery, the Kiwis miss virtually nothing.
While England’s players have rested, a number of the New Zealanders came straight from the abandoned Indian Premier League into this series.
When New Zealand rotated – they made six changes for the second Test – their collective strength was not diminished.
Their reward was a first Test win in five attempts at Edgbaston, having first visited this ground in 1958.

Day 1 / Night 1 of Alon on Wildcard
- Not gonna bury the lede here: This is Alon and I’ve popped my Wildcard.
- I’ve always wanted to keep some sort of log of my tinkers and my thoughts and I genuinely think it will help me through the course of these nine nights to settle on a team I like and a team that gets points (points are good right?).
- So I decided to turn it into a stream-of-consciousness post that I’ll do nightly.
- Here we go:
7:25pm EST
- Price changes in about an hour so fuck I gotta check those out and see if I can catch some double rises and ditch some guys who might be dropping.
- I look safe for this already so moving on...
- Picking the premiums to build my team around is going to be the hard part. Aubameyang is getting a bit of hype right now, understandably so, the man scores tons of goals and Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures are: bur, NEW, EVE, mci, WHU, bha, sou, NOR... some really fucking good ones in there but I cannot shake the thought that Arsenal just are not a good attacking team (despite good attacking players) and Aubameyang’s positioning and stats since Arteta arrived have been gross. Let’s see if my instincts are right...
- Passes Received Heatmap not that dissimilar to where he was getting it done under Emery and Freddie, but yes it is super wide and barely in the box which isn’t great... However his Penalty Area Touches are up from 4.0 per appearance to 7.0 per appearance and the shots and big chances are basically the same.
- As for quality of shot:
Before Arteta: 0.44 NPxG/90
With Arteta: 0.42 NPxG/90
- Again, basically the same.
- And looking back to past seasons his shots are down a bit and his NPxG/90 is WAY down from past seasons so that’s a bit alarming. This season total is 0.44, last season 0.65, and the season before that when he transferred to Arsenal he put up 0.65 again. That’s a big difference and you hate to see it but also 0.44 is still good.
- Follow up question... Is there a chance that Arsenal get better? Undeniably yes. They’re still learning a new system and still playing without the starting fullbacks (Bellerin just came back and Kola is injured and Tierney is long term injured). So... optimism? Ozil forgot how to shoot and Laca’s numbers are also down but maybe Martinelli can get in ahead of either of them or ahead of Pepe? Maybe Saka moves up when Kola returns and is good at LW and Aubz moves central? Or Martinelli wide left and Aubz central and drop Laca? There are things that could happen... Not saying that they will happen but they could happen so there is room for improvement.
- Ok so maybe I’m overthinking it... He has 127 points in 22 starts (5.77 points per start) which is very fucking good. 38*5.77 = 219 point season.
- Alright gonna fuck with Aubz in and see how it feels... He’s only been a disaster for me last season and this season so maybe third time’s a charm???
- Am I gonna get Kun? Mahrez? Impossible to try and predict what Pep is going to do in the league once UCL starts. Hmmm fuck.
- I guess it’s sort’ve ridiculous to not get Ings in despite playing Liverpool in GW25 because the Southampton run after is absurd and they’re possibly the fifth or sixth best team in the Premier League somehow (Ralph in)... So it’s looking likely for a 3 striker formation as of this moment but you know it’s Day 1 / Night 1...
- I sorta want Laporte... Is Ederson really gonna take pens? Didn’t Pep tease this once before or something? I remember talk of Eddy maybe taking pens which he obviously did not do.
- I wish I could find a reason to keep DCL but ugh god the fixtures from hell are incoming.
- Maybe I’ll go back to Jimenez and just blindly hold him and his value for the season. Maybe that’s smart. I can’t beat Jimenez.
- Could go gigantic at the back in a 433 or something like that. Double Liverpool with Alisson, double Sheff U, and Laporte? Just talking (typing) out loud here...
- It feels a little bit silly to only hold KDB of the City attackers considering the explosiveness but really I can’t figure out a reason why Kun would be playing against Leicester in GW27 and not saved for Real Madrid three days later instead? City also have FA Cup and EFL Cup to go win so I duno. Lotta action. Fuck.
- Ok things to think about... So many things to think about... So many tinkers to be had...
- Alright well this is a quick one because I’m swamped at work and need to fuck off back to work but here’s the team after just 20 minutes of fucking around and talking to myself... more tinkering later probably:
- Thanks for joining me <3
- Alon

Garth Crooks' team of the week: Aguero, Mata, Van Dijk, James, Ings
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/garth-crooks-team-of-the-week-aguero-mata-van-dijk-james-ings/
Garth Crooks' team of the week: Aguero, Mata, Van Dijk, James, Ings
Liverpool continued their unbeaten run with a 1-0 away win at Tottenham to go 14 points clear at the top of the table.
Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick and became the top-scoring foreign player in Premier League history asManchester CityhammeredAston Villa6-1 at Villa Park.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’sSouthamptoncelebrated a 2-1 away victory against high-flyingLeicesteras Danny Ings’ late goal denied Brendan Rodgers’ men a third successive league win.
Marcus Rashford marked his 200thManchester Unitedappearance in style by scoring twice as the Red Devils easily saw off bottom-of-the-tableNorwich4-0.
At Stamford Bridge, Callum Hudson-Odoi scored his first Premier League goal asChelsearegained their home form with a 3-0 win overBurnley.
Sheffield United,EvertonandWatfordalso picked up three points, whileCrystal PalaceandArsenalplusWolvesandNewcastleboth drew 1-1.
Here’s my team of the week – have a read and then select your own below.
Goalkeeper – Martin Dubravka (Newcastle)
I thought Crystal Palace’s Vicente Guaita’s double save in the closing minutes of their game against Arsenal was excellent. His efforts preserved a point for the Eagles, who played for almost 30 minutes facing 10 men after Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had to go for the sheer carelessness he showed in his tackle on Max Meyer.
However my goalkeeper this week is Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka. The Slovakia international’s performance away to Wolves was immense. He made two world-class saves; one with his feet and the other he practically pulled the ball out of the net. If you don’t believe me, ask his manager Steve Bruce.
Did you know?Dubravka made two saves from shots in the six-yard area in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Wolves.
Defenders – Fernandinho (Man City), Reece James (Chelsea), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
Fernandinho:There was a wonderful moment on 49 minutes against Aston Villa when Fernandinho screamed at his fellow defenders and pointed to play the ball forward rather than square. Manchester City were cruising at 4-0 but that didn’t deter the Brazil midfielder-turned-defender from lecturing his team-mates. At a time when Fernandinho could be winding down and starting to become a squad player, he’s now playing in a back four and has added another two years at the top to his career.
Did you know?Fernandinho made 71 passes, had 74 touches and made one tackle in Man City’s 6-1 victory against Aston Villa.
Reece James:This lad has caught my eye before and I’m not in the least bit surprised he has finally made my team. He is starting to look like the real deal. Some of you may remember me admonishing him after Chelsea’s defeat against West Ham when Aaron Cresswell got the better of him. The Chelsea youngster seems to have learned a lesson from that experience and is impressive in defence and attack.
Did you know?No Chelsea player created more chances against Burnley than defender James (three – including an assist).
Virgil van Dijk:Dele Alli had roasted Joe Gomez and seemed to be bearing down on Liverpool’s goal – but that was to reckon without this Dutch colossus. Van Dijk weighs up the situation and realises in order to avert the crisis he is going to have to get his shorts dirty. It’s rare for the Netherlands defender to have to go to ground but the situation called for it. The tackle was beautifully timed, with the man bun still intact, the shorts slightly ruffled but no lasting damage to the image or brand. Job done. Clean sheet. Liverpool march on.
Did you know?Van Dijk made 110 successful passes against Tottenham; the most of any player this weekend.
Midfielders – Juan Mata (Man United), Bernard (Everton), Kevin de Bruyne (Man City), Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)
Juan Mata:The ball for Marcus Rashford to score Manchester United’s opening goal against a soon-to-be-ravaged Norwich City was wonderful. There are few players in the Premier League capable of delivering such a ball – but Mata is one of them. The former Spain playmaker looked up, saw what Rashford saw, and played a pass that rendered everyone in the ground – including the entire Norwich defence – as spectators. Manchester United are simply not good enough to keep a player of Mata’s quality on the bench these days. When is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer going to realise that?
Did you know?Mata provided two assists in a Premier League game for the first time since October 2012, also in a match against Norwich.
Bernard:This lad was only on the pitch for 72 minutes but the impact he made on Everton against a resilient Brighton side was clear. Bernard buzzed around Goodison Park like the legendary Colin Harvey used to – and he had to do it without players of the calibre of Alan Ball or Howard Kendall supporting him. That’s the problem for new manager Carlo Ancelotti – Everton lack quality in midfield, Bernard apart.
Did you know?No Everton player made more passes in the opposition half (38) or created more chances (four) than Bernard against Brighton in the Toffees’ 1-0 win.
Kevin de Bruyne:I must say I have struggled with my team this week. To leave out Abdoulaye Doucoure and Troy Deeney after their win at Bournemouth and two-goal Riyad Mahrez after he danced his way through the Aston Villa defence on two occasions was very difficult. But I could not bring myself to leave out Kevin de Bruyne after his assist for Gabriel Jesus. Have you ever seen a pass like it? Out of this world.
Did you know?De Bruyne notched his 13th and 14th assists of the Premier League season against Aston Villa.
Roberto Firmino:Spurs deserved something from this match but got nothing, thanks to Roberto Firmino’s Exocet missile. If his left is his weaker foot, I can’t imagine how sweetly he strikes the ball with his right. The Brazil international usually plays up front but his work-rate and – for such a gifted player – his surprising physicality mean he could handle a midfield role in my team. He’s been in hot form since he scored the winner in the Club World Club final and, clearly, so are Liverpool, who look unstoppable at the moment.
Did you know?Firmino has scored five goals in his last six games for Liverpool in all competitions, as many as he had in his previous 30 appearances for the Reds.
Forwards – Marcus Rashford (Man United), Danny Ings (Southampton), Sergio Aguero (Man City)
Marcus Rashford:The way Rashford nonchalantly took his first goal against Norwich told you all you need to know about his development. The casual manner in which he celebrated screamed ‘this is just what I do for a living’ and that it was simply business as usual. I can’t help but feel if Jose Mourinho was still at Old Trafford, Rashford would be playing for a club abroad or in the reserves – instead, he is now flourishing at the club he loves.
Did you know?Rashford scored twice from three shots in Manchester United’s win against Norwich.
Danny Ings:The Southampton striker was a constant threat to Kasper Schmeichel and Leicester’s defenders; he could have scored four goals rather than ‘only’ the winner. Ings was effervescent throughout but if, as some are suggesting, he has the potential to move to a bigger club, he needs to improve his chances-to-goals ratio. Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said the win wasn’t about avenging the 9-0 humiliation against the Foxes in October but about how far they had come in their development. Come off it Ralph!
Did you know?Ings was responsible for half of Saints’ 10 shots on target at Leicester.
Sergio Aguero:Aguero’s hat-trick against lamentable Aston Villa was further confirmation he is, without doubt, the best striker to have graced the Premier League. He will soon call it a day on these shores but I dearly hope before he leaves he will be appropriately honoured by the PFA or the Football Writers’ Association. Preferably both.
Did you know? The Argentina striker netted his 12th Premier League hat-trick – the most of any player in the competition’s history.
Now it’s your turn
You’ve seen my selections this week. But who would you go for?
The Crooks of the matter
Gambling is not only legal but has been a recreational activity in the United Kingdom for over a century. But the question I would like to pose is: should sport governing bodies be recommending it? I think not.
The Football Association has sold its football rights to betting agencies via a third party, as if that was somehow providing an arm’s length approach. So, since the start of last season, bookmaker Bet365 has had rights to show FA Cup ties on its website and app, with matches available to anyone who had placed a bet or put a deposit in their account in the 24 hours before kick-off.
But the point of the FA is to protect the sport and the millions of boys and girls around the country who play it – not encourage gambling. Players, managers and owners of clubs are excluded from engaging with betting companies, so why should the FA be any different?
The government allowing members of the public to gamble is one thing, but for a governing body to act in this way is entirely different. The FA has created a double standard and I find it unacceptable.

Magic on the High Seas Notes
This story draws on background material from both JK Rowling’s Wizarding World and events in real life history. This post gives some of the details and sources I used. Beneath the cut is the general trigger/squick warning for the story, which is also a spoiler. Please use your own judgement in proceeding.
This story is set between the 12th and 19th April 1912, largely aboard the RMS Titanic. The ship struck an iceberg, foundered and sunk at approximately 02:20 am on the 15th April. Due to the speed of the sinking, an insufficient number of lifeboats, a lack of understanding of the urgency of the situation and poor emergency management and training, approximately fifteen hundred people died, including some of my minor characters.
Note 1: Newt travels Second Class for privacy and has a single room. Titanic didn’t sell any Second Class rooms as single, but she was under capacity for her first and only voyage. According to one surviving second class passenger, he got a room to himself due to this.
Note 2: Newt’s case has a rope ladder here. In the film Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, it is a staircase formed from horizontal slats with a diagonal in the centre.
Note 3: According to the film FBAWTFT, Pickett started travelling in Newt’s pocket due to needing body heat to get over a cold.
Note 4: According to the textbook of Fantastic Beasts, nifflers live in lairs up to twenty feet below the surface. The film shows the niffler in a treasure-filled nest at ground level.
Note 5: I’ve borrowed the niffler’s backstory from another story and author, but I can’t remember who. If it’s you, kudos.
Note 6: The Titanic almost crashed into the SS City of New York on her way out of Southampton and was delayed leaving by an hour. Luckily, Newt is antisocial.
Note 7: It was common for men and women to separate to their own pursuits after dinner. For that reason, there were different social rooms offered to different genders.
Note 8: According to the FB textbook, kelpies are a kind of British and Irish water demon. Lobalugs are a venomous creature found on the bottom of the North Sea. Shrake are fish covered in spines that live in the Atlantic Ocean. Sea serpents are found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean, and hippocampuses are a fish-horse hybrid creature usually found in the Mediterranean, although one was caught by merpeople off the shores of Scotland in 1949.
Note 9: Titanic had four promenades on each side of the Boat Deck, for Second Class, the engineers, First Class and the officers. All except the First Class promenade were lined with lifeboats. Social walking, or “promenading”, was very popular, especially for getting to know people.
Note 10: A fwooper is a brightly coloured African bird whose song is initially pleasurable but will eventually drive the listener to insanity.
Note 11: I made up the ICW universal beast permit, and any and all permits used by MACUSA previous to the outlawing of private beast ownership.
Note 12: Newt’s case has a switch labelled “Muggle Worthy”. If he made it himself, why would he have a switch like that labelled so blatantly? This suggests to me that he bought and adapted it.
Note 13: According to the Fantastic Beasts textbook, crup tails are removed with a painless severing charm at between six and eight weeks of age.
Note 14: I borrowed AWLs. Again, I can’t remember who from. Considering Newt’s complaining about wizards’ lack of appreciation for beasts, it seems reasonable that Care might not be offered to NEWT level.
Note 15: We still don’t know exactly what happened to end Newt’s Hogwarts career, so I get to play with it.
Note 16: Is there a Beast Division at MACUSA? There’s regulations regarding beast control in the Statute, so there’s probably something.
Note 17: MACUSA in particular keeps tabs on their resident magicals, so they probably keep an eye on immigration, and assist where necessary. Magic evens out quality of life worldwide, I should think, so I doubt there are too many economic migrants. Therefore, there shouldn’t be the same fear of migrants, and the governments would be more friendly.
Note 18: What do diagnostic charms look like? Who knows.
Note 19: Salamanders seem like a nice little pet for Newt, but open fires near trees are dodgy. The containment barriers and holding cells? Mine. The textbook doesn’t say much about the origin of salamanders, but ashwinders spontaneously generate in magical fires so I didn’t want to do that and adopted the technique for birthing a basilisk instead.
Note 20: According to Pottermore’s article on wand woods, bowtruckles are a useful indicator of whether or not a tree is of wand quality, but can also pose a danger when collecting wood. This was what led me to the tree-theft story, which I have not borrowed from anyone.
Note 21: The crup and the puffskeins? All mine.
Note 22: Why not bring in Goldsteins, Kowalskis and Bareboneses? The ages aren’t too bad compared to the film, which is set fourteen years later. The only one whose age really doesn’t fit is Modesty.
Note 23: You never actually hear about non-magical children of mixed blood marriages, but really it should happen. And that kind of problem seems like a reasonable reason to emigrate.
Note 24: Considering Mary Lou’s behaviour in the film, it seems probable that she’d be very conflicted about her own children being magical.
Note 25: It’s suspected that Hermione Granger’s cat Crookshanks is a kneazle/cat crossbreed.
Note 26: History of Magical America and Scourer descendants all from Pottermore. MACUSA initially being called MACA is mine.
Note 27: What does MACUSA do with no-maj-born’s families? I can’t remember who came up with double-cross contracts, but kudos.
Note 28: RL animal conservation wasn’t really a thing in 1912.
Note 29: The diet of nifflers had never actually been revealed.
Note 30: Puppy love between Jacob and Queenie. Why not?
Note 31: What we know of Theseus Scamander is that he is a war hero. Super-attentive auror is fanon, but awesome.
Note 32: Young adults being drunk in charge of wands is a recipe for disaster. All incidents of my own creation. In the incident where the Queen is thrown from her throne, that would be Queen Victoria.
Note 33: Mrs Scamander the hippogriff breeder is established in the “About the Author” of the textbook Fantastic Beasts.
Note 34: Modifying potions to work on creatures is something Newt would love. As mentioned earlier, the presence of bowtruckles is useful for wand makers, although this method of utilising them would clearly prove more trouble than it was worth. All my own creation.
Note 35: Newt is so Pickett’s home tree, so why not play with that?
Note 36: Women’s lib is a very new concept historically speaking, so Mary Lou Barebone quite naturally has what we would term “old-fashioned views”. However, there was a female Chief of the Wizard’s Council (which preceded the Ministry of Magic) as far back as the fourteenth or fifteenth century (See “What is a Beast?” in the textbook Fantastic Beasts.)
Note 37: Why did Newt never place a tracker on his niffler?
Note 38: Anti-Semitism was very common and largely socially acceptable until the 1940s. But trying to argue against Jews for biblical reasons is stupid.
Note 39: In Catholic society, which was virtually all of Europe until the Reformation in the 1500s, being excommunicated was and still is a Big Thing. It would basically exclude you from society. But if you’re not Catholic, and aren’t living in a Catholic society, it’s probably meaningless. The Statute of Secrecy was first signed in 1689, so I’ve improvised on the Wizarding relationship with the Church.
Note 40: Ruler of France in 1942? Reference to Hitler.
Note 41: The Entente Cordiale was an agreement between Britain and France that was expanded to include Russia in the Triple Entente. The Entente forced Germany to back off during two Moroccan Crises in the build-up to the First World War, and the formation of opposing power blocks directly caused the war. The Kaiser was the Emperor of Germany until he was ousted in 1918. France and Germany had a deep enmity.
Note 42: Jervis the jarvey is a creation of mine to help explain the expelling incident. I can see no way that he wouldn’t be put down for injuring a pureblood.
Note 43: Titanic struck the iceberg at 23:39 on Sunday night. Most of those aboard felt it as a jolt to one degree or another. Only those in close proximity registered anything more. It twenty-five minutes before the captain ordered the passengers mustered.
Note 44: The passengers weren’t told that the ship was sinking in order to avoid panic. The First Class stewards were able to give a lot of aid to their charges, having fewer charges per steward than Second or Third Class stewards.
Note 45: Some passengers played football (soccer) with ice chunks on deck. I say again, the passengers weren’t told the severity of the situation.
Note 46: The ship listed due to the water coming in on one side.
Note 47: The engines roared due to venting steam as the engineers tried to pump out water and keep the electricity generators going.
Note 48: The first boat, Boat 7, was lowered at 00:40, from the starboard side. The starboard boats were under the supervision of First Officer William Murdoch. Murdoch operated a “women and children first” policy, but had problems finding people willing to get into the boats. There was also a fear among the crew that the boats couldn’t be safely lowered while fully loaded, and the crew did not know how quick the ship would sink. According to Second Officer Charles Lightoller, who was the highest ranking surviving officer, if they’d known the danger, he “would have taken more risks”. Lifeboats were not expected to keep the entire ship’s complement afloat at once, so the crew did not think to try.
Note 49: Third Class passengers were largely kept segregated from the other passengers due to immigration procedures. There were some gates that got locked and impeded passenger progress. For this reason, there were proportionally fewer Third Class survivors than first or second. However, there was no intentional delaying of these passengers, and one steward in particular led several groups of passengers through the ship’s corridors to the Boat Deck. But many Third Class passengers were also stymied by a lack of English, meaning they didn’t understand what the stewards were telling them.
Note 50: Titanic had a ship’s cat named Jenny, who gave birth to four kittens a week before leaving Southampton. According to stewardess Violet Jessop, she kept the kittens in the galley and was fed scraps. One cabin boy claimed he’d seen Jenny and her kittens leave the ship before starting the mid-Atlantic leg of the voyage, but that seems more like wishful thinking.
Note 51: According to JK Rowling, Grindelwald prevented Queenie and other legilimens revealing him via Occlumency. Suddenly not being able to read someone would be suspicious, so I think it likely Percival also had some skill in the mental arts.
Note 52: The latest theory on the exact sinking of the Titanic is that she broke prematurely and only began her final plunge after breaking. This is backed up by both an examination of a portion of the wreck’s keel and by various documents shipbuilding company Harland and Wolff produced in an attempt to work out how she sank. These two sources reached their conclusions independently; Harland and Wolff did not have access to the wreck and the naval architect who examined the wreck did not know of the existence of the Harland and Wolff documents. Harland and Wolff also knew of structural damage to Titanic’s earlier sister ship Olympic which had pointed to some disturbing weaknesses in the ship’s superstructure. Titanic was given some modifications to try to counter the weakness, but the other sister ship Britannic, launched 1914 and sunk by a mine in 1916, shows signs of a major redesign. There were probably no more than two or three people aboard Titanic at the time of her sinking who knew of her weaknesses: Thomas Andrews the ship designer; Edward Smith the Captain (who appears to have been paralysed by the magnitude of the disaster and as a result gave completely inadequate direction); and J. Bruce Ismay, the ship’s owner (who, judging by his testimony at the Senate’s Inquiry and reported behaviour after the sinking, appears to have been in emotional shock). Of these three, Bruce Ismay was the only one to survive. The rest of the crew claimed they did not think the ship would go down before the rescue ship arrived and appear to have acted accordingly.
Note 53: Those who were below deck when the ship sank would have been killed by the increasing pressure underwater fairly quickly. Those in the water mostly died slowly of hypothermia, although some would have died of the resultant cardiac shock within minutes. Very few are thought to have drowned due to the wide availability of life belts.
Note 54: Mary Lou Barebone has great faith in the Bible, and is also being torn between religious conviction and duty to her children. It’s not unknown to put a life-or-death situation in God’s hands.
Note 55: Why did both Goldsteins stay behind? Partly for plot reasons, but also because people can be irrational, especially when faced with death.
Note 56: A mother committing murder-suicide is usually caused by or related to post-partum depression, but it happens.
Note 57: Is it more morally correct to prevent someone from committing suicide, or to let them? I’m not a philosopher.
Note 58: This boat is Boat 14. It’s loading was supervised by Chief Mate Henry Wilde and Charles Lightoller. Lightoller was in charge of loading the lifeboats on the port side and operated a “women and children only” policy. Captain Smith’s exact order was to “put the women and children in the boats and lower away” and as said earlier, he offered very little leadership, which resulted in Lightoller and Murdoch interpreting the order differently. He also had to be asked by Lightoller if they should put people in the life boats. Wilde and Lightoller were assisted in loading Boat 14 by Fifth Officer Lowe, who finished loading and took charge of the boat after Wilde and Lightoller moved on to another boat. It is reasonably well reported that Lightoller allowed Canadian yachtsman Major Arthur Peuchen to board a boat to assist the quartermaster and single crewman in handling the boat (Lightoller later testified that he operated a policy of one man in charge and two assisting). This was the only example of Lightoller allowing a man into a boat; however, after the departure of Wilde and Lightoller, Lowe took a racket champion from England called C. Williams to help handle the boat. I let Percival take Mr Williams’ place for the sake of the story. It’s also reported that the first signs of panic were as Boat 14 was lowered. Lowe was forced to fire several shots and evicted a young man who jumped into the boat as it was being lowered. However, all three details were absent from Lowe’s testimony at the Senate Inquiry and therefore may well be false or have been committed by someone else.
Note 59: The boats had rowing positions for both facing towards the destination and facing away. Notably, Bruce Ismay rowed with his back to the sinking ship and couldn’t bear to see her final demise.
Note 60: Lowe gathered together five boats: his own 14, 10, 12, another boat he never got that number of, and a collapsible I believe to be Collapsible C due to Lowe meeting up with D and A later, and B being upside down.
Note 61: Lowe defended his decision to wait for the cries to thin out on the basis that if he went into a mass of sixteen hundred people his boat would be overturned. While the men on the Inquiry board weren’t impressed, Boat 14 was the only one that returned to the site to rescue survivors. All the other boats had either passengers or crew refusing to go back.
Note 62: Lowe found an Italian man in his boat wearing a woman’s shawl and, he presumed, skirts. He “caught hold of him and pitched him in” to “the fore part of the boat in which I transferred my passengers”, “because he was not worthy of being handled better”, as Lowe described in his testimony.
Note 63: The four men Lowe pulled from the water were the steward Harold Phillimore, the first class passenger William Fisher Hoyt, the third class passenger Fang Lang and a fourth unknown person, possibly the second class passenger Emilio Ilario Giuseppe Portaluppi. I have substituted Portaluppi with Newt.
Note 64: Captain Arthur Rostron, captain of the Carpathis who came to Titanic’s rescue, order rockets fired from his ship at 02:45 and every quarter hour afterwards. Carpathia arrived at about 04:00, around an hour and forty minutes after Titanic went under.
Note 65: According to Lowe’s testimony, he was sailing and 4 or 5, maybe 6 knots. He thought Collapsible D looked rather sorry and took her in tow. He considered cutting D loose to get to Collapsible A faster as she was in a worse plight than D. When Lowe said he picked up passengers from a sinking collapsible, he was specifically asked if it was upturned, as Collapsible B had floated off upside down. This one was occupied by a number of people, and Officer Lightoller directed the occupants to keep it afloat until another boat rescued them.
Note 66: According to Rostron, boatswains’ chairs, pilot ladders and canvas ask bags were used to get survivors onto Carpathia. He also gave instructions for his stewards to assist Titanic survivors in various ways, such as providing hot tea, coffee and soup, having doctors ready, and preparing to get the names of survivors.
Note 67: We don’t know what Seraphina Piquery did before she became President of MACUSA. I’ve seen her portrayed as Director of Magical Security a few times, and decided to do something different. She has the same job in America as Barty Crouch did in Britain at the time of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Note 68: The records usually used for immigration purposes were the passenger manifests, which went down with Titanic. Carpathia’s purser did his best to recreate the records, but by-and-large the immigration inspectors were unusually lenient. Ellis Island immigration centre was closed for the night by the time Carpathia arrived, so procedures were undertaken over several days. Carpathia would, technically, have been liable for the lack of documents as she was the ship bringing in the immigrants. As she was owned by Cunard while Titanic was owned by White Star, there were issues of who should pay any and all charges owed. Due to the exceptional circumstances, there was leniency, and Cunard was never charged for the lack of documents. (Carpathia had actually left New York for the Mediterranean a few days before going to Titanic’s rescue, and had to do a U-turn to deliver the survivors to New York.)
Note 69: I imagine non-Caucasian witches and wizards would have used glamours to disguise their ethnicity in large parts of America, especially when going about official or semi-official business in places with a large concentration of Caucasians.
Note 70: I made up a load of officials.
Note 71: Hippogriff OC. It’s widely believed that Artemis and Theseus were hippogriffs that Newt and Theseus were named after (Newt’s full name is Newton Artemis Fido Scamander). Laertes is the name of Odysseus’ father, who was one of Jason’s Argonauts.
I did gather a lot more information on the Titanic, but I didn’t use more. My main sources were Wikipedia, the transcripts of the US Senate Inquiry and the book Titanic’s Last Secrets: The Further Adventures of the Shadow Divers by Brad Matsen (which is actually non-fiction, no matter what it sounds like). I was also, to a degree, inspired by the film A Night To Remember, which is considered the most historically accurate film of the sinking. It’s available on YouTube, and I heartily recommend it. Just don’t be put off by it being in black and white.

Brighton FA Cup nightmare: Man Utd game on Saturday night
Brighton and Hove Albion fans face a travel headache after their away FA Cup quarter final against Manchester United was moved to Saturday night.
BT Sport have picked the game for TV coverage, and as a result the game will kick-off at 7.45pm on March 17 – leaving Brighton fans facing having to navigate their way from the north west to the south coast at 10pm or later.
The other game chosen for television is Leicester City v Chelsea, which will be shown on BBC One at 4.30pm on Sunday, March 18.

Brighton fans face a 517-mile round trip – more than 10 hours on the road – with the kick-off time making rail travel impossible.
The last train that leaves Manchester Piccadilly for Brighton departs at 8.35pm – when Seagulls fans will be tucking into their half-time pies. Even then, this journey requires two changes before getting into Brighton station at 1.17am.
As a result, Brighton have offered to put on a special coach service in order to get their fans to and from Old Trafford at a reasonable time.
Brighton – who have been given an allocation of 5,500 for the tie – announced on their website on Friday morning that Seagull Travel are running a bus, with pick-ups across East and West Sussex.
The journey is not free, however, with fans being charged £38 for the return journey, on top of ticket prices which range between £10 for under-16s, up to £45 for non-season ticket holding adults.

Wigan Athletic have been ignored in the TV picks, despite having stunned Manchester City
The TV selections are also controversial as they ignore League One Wigan Athletic’s home tie against top tier Southampton. The Latics stunned Manchester City in round five to make it to this stage.
Instead the BBC and BT have chosen the bigger clubs. Manchester United are back on TV having had 58 matches shown live in a row over 12 years – until the third round this season, when their game against Derby was not broadcast live.
The Brighton game is the second to be shown in the Saturday 7.45pm slot by BT Sport, in a precursor to the Premier League introducing weekend evening kick-offs for the 2019-20 season.
The first saw West Brom win 3-2 at Liverpool in the fourth round, with Baggies fans facing a significantly shorter trip than their Seagulls counterparts.
Manchester United v Brighton, a repeat of the 1983 final, also represents the first time Albion have reached the last eight since 1986, and therefore many fans will have been hoping to make the journey for the game.
The other game chosen for television is Leicester City v Chelsea, on Sunday afternoon
