The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to announce a new digital collaboration with Google Arts & Culture, the leading online platform that uses technology to share the unique collections and cultural institutions with a global audience.

From Friday 21 May, a specially curated selection of 15 online stories will be published and free to view on the Google Arts & Culture platform. They range from the creation of Central Park in New York, modernist buildings in Ghana to the Picturesque movement and from a century of Olympic buildings to a historic tour of key architectural landmarks in Venice.
Featured highlights from the RIBA’s collections will include original drawings by Ernö Goldfinger, Sir Charles Barry (Big Ben), Étienne-Louis Boullée and Toyo Ito. Featured projects include work by Walter Gropius, Pier Luigi Nervi, Kenzo Tange, Jane Drew & Maxwell Fry, Zaha Hadid and Diller Scofidio & Renfro. Early photography of New York and Venice (Carlo Ponti, Carlo Naya and Alinari Fratelli) from the 1860s onwards. A photo of the Louvre in Paris under construction in 1846 can be viewed up close, revealing extraordinary levels of detail.
The curated selection illustrates the international scope of RIBA’s Collection, spanning the Renaissance to the present day. It includes some never-before-exhibited objects that showcase more unusual parts of the archive, such as landscape designer Sir Humphrey Repton’s drawings and business card, private photographs from architects, portraits, parks and garden designs.

RIBA CEO Alan Vallance:
“Our new partnership with Google Arts & Culture creates a great opportunity to inspire and delight a global audience and to showcase our unique treasures. We look forward to curating more online experiences and exhibitions, to illustrate the impact and importance of design and architecture, throughout the ages and around the world.”
Amit Sood, Director, Google Arts & Culture:
“This is the first step in what we hope will be an inspiring architectural journey with RIBA on Google Arts & Culture. Through our collaboration, we are proud to help share their incredible stories and resources with architecture lovers and aspiring students around the world. RIBA has one of the world’s leading architecture collections and inspires and supports global architectural talent as we look to designing the future.”

Was there life before Facebook 360? A photographers take…
Some thoughts on panoramic photography by yours truly, Somdutt Prasad, with examples extending from Liverpool UK, to Masai Mara, Kenya and Sikkim, India.
Over the last decade technology has made amazing strides, especially in the field of panoramic photography. Today, cameras will make panoramas with a series of shots and assemble them in camera for you. Or better still, go live on Facebook 360 and turn your phone around and it will broadcast a live panoramic view for your friends or public (whoever your target audienceare)…and voila it is there for all to see. Convenience wins over quality everyday, for example as consumers we choose convenience of a smartphone camera, although we know that a dedicated camera (SLR or equivalent) will give better results. As the user base grows, more and more technology is brought to bear on the user friendly alternative, the smartphone in this case, and some of this technology makes its way back to the ‘serious’ gear – the DSLRs and Mirrorless top end cameras, a healthy cross fertilisation is set up and everyone benefits.
Just look at the clunky menus on most DSLR’s
Compare it to my OnePlus 5 phone-camera which has a ‘Panorama Mode’ where the user interface is just easy to use, no diving into menus, no turning dials, just a quick touch or two, just a pleasure.
We have to look at examples to get a feel for how technology has evolved. Let us start in reverses chronology. Recently I was on a dream trip in Kenya, Masai Mara. Well we were shooting wildlife most of the time as that is what we had gone there to do. But having all this technology at one’s disposal it tempts you to document the place in different ways, so I took some panoramic shots on my OnePlus 5, and was amazed with the results: In the first shot You can see our Masai Guide in the extreme left and as I sweep around to get my 360 pano, guided by the phone, he reappears in the right of the frame, and the river does as well! A tad artificial, but it does convey the atmosphere more than a single shot would have done.
The second panoramic effort shows breakfast being laid out on the right, on the banks of the Mara river, famous for the wilderbeest crossing, but calm at this time of year. There are some Hipos in the water, but you may not be able to make them out in the wide vista.
But I digress – go back a couple of years, and most phones did not have panorama modes, although many cameras had. Here is an example from 2016 from my Panasonic GX-7 ( a mirrorless camera which I still use, and is a absolute pleasure – although it has been superseded by newer models). We were in Sikkim and I took a Pano of the Guru Dongmar lake:
A pleasing picture, but you can see the ‘banding’ especially around the sun, which no amount of Photoshop cleaning would get rid off (I am sure someone can do it, but my efforts were unsuccessful). Most of the lake is frozen, but you see an area in the left which is not. Legend has it that it was blessed by Guru Nanak, the venerable Sikh Guru, and where he stepped onto the lake was thereafter destined never to freeze.
All panoramas did not show this banding, and here is one looking the other way, maybe the avoidance of directly shooting into the sun avoided the issue.
Lesson number 1: Understand the technology you are using and utilise it.
Lesson number 2: You can get great results with the technology you have, provided you understand it and deploy it appropriately.
Well let us flashback, in 2003/4 The Canon D300 and Nikon D70 were introduced, these were the first sub (just) $1000 DSLRs introduced. Digital DSLR technology had become accessible to many! I remember buying mine (a Nikon D70) in Dixon’s in Gatwick Airport (Duty Free) in 2004. Panoramas were not that common and took an effort to do.. Here is my effort from 2005.
This is the Liverpool skyline as seen from the Birkenhead side of the river Mersey in 2005. The ship docked on the left is on the Birkenhead side of the river, and then you sweep from left to right, you see the iconic Liver building (headquarters of Cunard, who sent he Titanic out), The Liverpool Radio city Tower (from where I have done a few radio interviews in the past, when I lived there), the Liverpool Cathedral, and then as you sweep to the right, you come back to the Birkenhead side of the river, where you see the station for the Birkenhead ferry. This was taken on a DSLR ( I think it was the Nikon D70, with a 85mm lens on a tripod, carefully taking frames with enough overlap, so that I could ‘stitch’ them together in software at home after the shoot), little automation but good results.
Maybe I could have done this with my Oneplus 5 phone today. Will try next time I am there, But we could make lovely panoramas, about 15 years ago, and I daresay, that although it took much more effort, the quality of the result was better! Judge for yourself.

Renos chats to James Ngcobo about The Suitcase
Tune in to Saturday’s Role With Reno: O Rolos Tou Savattou Me Ton Reno, Saturday mornings on The New Pan Hellenic Voice – Greek Community Radio 1422MW from 8am to 11am
On Saturday morning’s edition of Saturday’s Role With Reno, host Renos Spanoudes spoke to James Ngcobo about Es’kia Mphahlele‘s The Suitcase.
James Ngcobo
The Suitcase.
Following a critically acclaimed and sold out season during a five-week tour of the UK, the Market Theatre’s production, THE SUITCASE, adapted and directed by James Ngcobo’s from the short story be Es’kia Mphahlele returns to the Market Theatre. The production played in Hull, Lancaster, Newcastle, Liverpool and Derby. Esteemed guests who saw the production in the UK include the former Head of the UN, Kofi Annan, accompanied by his wife.
Siyabonga Thwala in The Suitcase
THE SUITCASE features an all-star cast of Masasa Mbangeni, Siyabonga Thwala, Desmond Dube and Nokukhanya Dlamini. The six-week season in the John Kani Theatre will give theatre-lovers the same proudly-Mzansi experience that made UK audiences give it rousing standing ovations and glowing accolades.
Adapted from Es’kia Mphahlele’s short story set in the 1950’s, THE SUITCASE is an enthralling love story about a young couple who, despite family disapproval of their marriage, leave for the city, intending to return wealthy and immune from social censure. The pressures of the city, unemployment and poverty strip away the husband`s self-esteem and he starts to lose his moral compass. He is so desperate to provide for his pregnant wife that he steals a suitcase left on a bus. This action leads to frightening consequences, dramatic turns and unexpected twists.
