29th March 2017 - UK Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50... which was basically a Dear John letter informing the EU that we were leaving them.
It was supposed to become effective two years later, but due political turmoil and arguments in London, the divorce did not become official until 11pm on 31st January 2020. It then took a further three years for the financial and legal disputes to be settled!

To the Woman Crying Uncontrollably in the Next Stall
If you ever woke in your dress at 4am ever closed your legs to a man you loved opened them for one you didn’t moved against a pillow in the dark stood miserably on a beach seaweed clinging to your ankles paid good money for a bad haircut backed away from a mirror that wanted to kill you bled into the back seat for lack of a tampon if you swam across a river under rain sang using a dildo for a microphone stayed up to watch the moon eat the sun entire ripped out the stitches in your heart because why not if you think nothing & no one can / listen I love you joy is coming
[Kim Addonizio] ***
"Maybe I could have been cool a decade ago, or moved to New York, or figured out who I was or what I wanted, rather than indulge myself in a surreal protest against a surreal war happening within my own body. I’m afraid I acquired too many resentments to survive without recoil, and I’m afraid that if I write myself out of them, I’ll be left without desires or skills." [Grace Lavery’s newsletter]
"I look back on these trips and see their beauty: how they allowed my parents to introduce a sense of adventure into our lives, a touch of something that felt like mild peril. "Jean Hannah Edelstein’s memories of travelling to Scotland as a child [The Daily Telegraph]
“We shot in chronological order and worked on the script every weekend throughout the shoot,” the director and co-writer Richard Linklater said. “We went pretty far into this thinking they weren’t going to plan to meet again, and the night before, we were up until 3 in the morning rewriting the final scene." On the making of ‘Before Sunrise’ [Ashley Spencer, The New York Times]
This is a fantastic deep dive into sex in the face of cancer, which is also a story about taking sexuality seriously as a health issue [Eleanor Cummins, Elemental at Medium]

Britain's Independence Day?
After a 47 year partnership, at 11pm GMT, 31st January 2020, the UK leaves the EU. I didn't want this and I do feel sad 😔 I also feel this is the beginning of the end for the Union of Great Britain, and that makes me ever so sad! 😔😥
Tumblr media
But it is happening and we all now need to make the best of it. Bye, bye, and thank you to all of our European cousins 🙋💜

CATALINA ROLEPLAY PRESENTS...
The opulence of the ballroom is staggering as you slowly make your way through emerald curtains. Gold drips and glitters from every surface, save the gleaming marble floors. Rich fabrics–brocades, silks, velvets–hung from the walls as well as the guests. To an observer, you are no more than a part of a moving mass in a sea of beautiful bodies. The mood of the individuals around you indistinguishable in unseen currents beneath the dark surface of their intricate masks. Conversations swirl in a cacophony of sounds. Laughter and lively chatter freely mingling in the air along with the harmonious melodies of the cover band. Beneath dry ice smoke spirals in an array of reds, purples, and greens.
You’re unable to spot the dance floor due to the sheer amount of Catalina Islanders dancing to upbeat music.
One would assume there was hardly room for any more yet you manage to find some as you approach the gathering of both familiar and unfamiliar faces. You laugh, the sound barely heard over the noise, as one of them playfully spins you into the arms of another. It wasn’t long until more people begin to join you. Like kids left unsupervised on a playground all the patrons around you are free and inhibited. Amongst these people one finds themselves given complete permission to feel elation, to feel the sort of bond that is usually denied in the coldness found in bigger towns and more infamous cities. In this room, no one is a stranger and everyone’s invited to experience joy as one to celebrate the island they all called home.

You can expect Flan, Churros, Tres Leches Cake, Crema Catalana (Spanish Crème brulée), Tarta de Manzana Casera (Apple Tart), Goxua (Spanish Tiramisu), Bunuelos de Viento (Fritters), and Mantecados (anise-scented drop cookies).

Bartenders can make ALCOHOLIC and NON-ALCOHOLIC options of these drinks. Please specify to your serving staff on their roundabouts to your table.
Activities: Due to the lack of cell phones for this event, if you would like your pictures to be taken, photographers and photo-booths ─ three in total ─ will be scattered around the ballroom so you, your partner, or your friends can snap pictures together for memory sake! Let’s be real, you don’t want to forget anything that happens tonight.
Out of Character Information:
The time is finally here….. our first event for Catalina. It’s been a long time coming but we finally made it happen. The group has been open for over a month and a few days, give or take, we thank everyone for being kind and patiently waiting for us to the ball rolling. It had been a chaotic couple of weeks in the beginning, but things are starting to look bright as we all indulge in this group journey together. More will be coming your way, and that’s a definite promise. You can take my words, Admin Steph, to heart if I ever break my promise. Calling myself out in writing this OOC portion.. you bet! While I want to keep this message short and straight to the point, there’s a lot of detail provided in this event for all of you to read over. So I remind you all to read carefully, send us any messages if you have any concerns and worries ─  because we are here to assist you all!
Have fun with this event! I love events because it gives me the ability to get out of my comfort zone, in a different element, and interact with other muses on the dashboard that we haven’t before. I will say... carefully watch out for more information coming forward with the event because we are going over the top with Catalina’s first event to hit it off with a BOOM. Enough of the rambling, let’s get on with the other important information as well. Please take the time to read thoroughly through the information provided below:
Beginning Date: Saturday, January 25th ─ 12PM CST / 1PM EST / 6PM GMT.
Ending Date: Saturday, February 1st ─ 5PM CST / 6PM EST / 11PM GMT.

Previous Threads: We kindly ask all non-event related threads to be wrapped up or put on hold for the event, just so everyone can focus on their event threads with no other worries. If you have previous threads that you’d like to continue after the event, please draft them before the start of the event so you don’t lose them!
Acceptances: No acceptances will be held during this event. We’ll be bypassing January 27th (Monday) and January 31st (Friday). It gives us, the admins, to enjoy the event with our members. While we’ll still be checking the main and updating the application count and answering any questions coming in, our activity may be fleeting.
Starters: All starters must be tagged #catalina: starter and #catalina: founders day ball. Please remember, once there becomes a certain amount of event starters in the tag, you must respond to THREE STARTERS before posting your own. Group rules’ still apply during events.
Tags: Any edit, such as your character’s outfit of choice for the event can be tagged #catalina: founders day ball and #catalina: media! All edits will be reblogged on @catalinamedia.

What to Know About Travel in Europe After Brexit
Travel in Europe After Brexit
As of January 2020, the UK began the lengthy process of leaving the EU. As the majority of Brits voted to leave the EU in the ongoing Brexit debate, there will be some definite changes to travel in Europe after Brexit. At 11PM on December 31st 2020, Brexit was officially put in place and Britain is no longer an EU member, so what does this mean for your future travel plans?
We know for certain that travel guidelines have changed since January 2021, so here are some of the key points to remember when booking your next big Europe trip. Before you leave for your chosen EU destination, don’t forget to brush up on your language skills with Idyoma.
Travel in Europe After Brexit
• EHIC 200
• Mobile Roaming 200
• Passport 200
• Driving License and Insurance 200
• Visas 200
• Vaccinations 200
• Easiest Destinations for Brits 200
Why You Need EHIC to Travel in Europe After Brexit
An EHIC is a European Health Insurance Card. Previously this card offered all EU citizens entitlement to the relevant state healthcare services of the country you were visiting. This would give you access the local healthcare system at a reduced cost or for free. For example, if you broke an arm in Germany, you could present your EHIC card at the hospital to show that you were able to use the healthcare services as an EU resident. However, this no longer applies if you’re a UK resident.
Previous EHIC cards are valid until their shown expiry dates, but you cannot apply for a new EHIC card under the new UK government Brexit legislation. Instead, a replacement scheme was rolled out in January 2021 called the Global Health Insurance Card or GHIC. The GHIC is similar to the old EHIC, as it gives the holder free or reduced cost use of state healthcare In reciprocal countries like Australia and New Zealand. Unlike its name suggests, the GHIC doesn’t currently cover EEA states such as Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, or Iceland. Also, if you have an existing or long-term illness you should probably seek out independent health and travel insurance to ensure you’re covered.
You can apply for the new GHIC card for free on the NHS website.
Mobile Roaming
One thing yuo might have considered when thinking about travel in Europe after Brexit is your mobile! Mobile roaming can be a tricky one to figure out when entering a new country. Previously, free mobile roaming was guaranteed in the European and Schengen areas, but this ended on December 31st 2020. While mobile roaming isn’t guaranteed, many phone operators aren’t actually planning to introduce fees for roaming. You need to check with your individual phone operator to find out if there are any particular charges you could incur if you use roaming data while on holiday in an EU country.
Thankfully, there is a new law that adds a little bit of protection for you. While you browse the internet in another country, you won’t rack up enormous roaming data charges. If there are charges for mobile roaming in your destination country, then you will receive a notification when charges reach £45. No further charges for using internet can be incurred unless you clearly opt-in to continue using roaming internet data at a cost. If you check with your provider well before leaving the UK, though, you’ll be made fully aware of any possible fees for mobile roaming.
To Travel in Europe After Brexit You’ll Need a Passport
As a lover of travel, you probably know that until 2021, UK citizens with a valid passport were able to travel freely within Europe. From January 2021 UK citizens must renew their passports earlier than they may have previously expected, to ensure it’s still valid. Your passport must have at least six months left before its expiry date, on the day that you travel. If your passport is even a week or a day short of six months remaining validity, you may not be allowed to travel to EU countries or EEA states.
As before, travel rules for travel to Ireland apply. Travel in Europe after Brexit is undoubtedly going to be a litle trickier. But you must also still be aware of the COVID guidelines and quarantine rules of your destination country, so you’re prepared to enter safely and know that your passport won’t expire while you’re away.
If you want to check whether or not you need to renew your UK passport before your travel date, the British government have provided a useful online tool. You can also apply for a new passport from the government website. Remember that it can take up to a few months for passport applications to be fully processed and for you to receive your valid passport, so it’s a good idea to sort out your passport well in advance of booking any trips to EU destinations.
Driving License and Insurance
Feel like braving the winding Italian countryside roads on your next travel adventure? Previously as a UK citizen, you will have enjoyed a lot of freedom with your EU driver’s license but driving in the EU as a UK citizen has changed just a little.
There were some concerns that Brits would be required to apply for an international driving permit in order to drive throughout the European Union countries. The final Brexit deal terms instead dictated that all UK driving licenses, providing they’re valid and the driver also has insurance, are still valid for use in the EU. This means you can still rent cars on your holidays to the EU and drive with your usual license. The complication comes when you want to bring in your own vehicle to drive. In this case you’ll also need to apply for a Green Card which proves you have a car insurance policy in place, as well as a GB sticker to be displayed on your vehicle. Funnily enough, these rules also apply if you are driving from Northern Ireland to the Republic, where a Green Card is required.
Visas
When it comes to travel in Europe after Brexit, there is speculation that you will need to apply in advance to visit the EU from 2022, as a British citizen. The new ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation Scheme) you’ll be required to pay 7 Euro for a three-year pass (not unlike a visa). Before you can leave for your destination, you will also need to specify which country you will arrive in and the exact address of where you’ll be staying for the first night in that destination country.
That may sound a bit complicated, but for now as a tourist, you don’t need to apply for a visa for short trips to EU and EAA countries. You’ll be allowed to stay in that country for up to 90 days within any one 180-day period. If you want to stay longer than those 90 days in an EU country, you’ll need to get a visa or a travel permit specific to your circumstances.
Bear in mind that travel to Ireland is still the same as it has been regarding visas. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania and Croatia have different rules, however, so time spent in those countries does not count towards your 90-day total visiting allowance.
Because of the confusing changes and specificity of rules depending on your destination, the EU created a ‘short term stay visa calculator’ so you can figure out how many more days you are allowed to stay in a European country. In short – check the visa rules around your specific destination country and stay aware of how long you’re allowed to remain there on your trip.
Vaccinations and Border Restrictions During Travel in Europe After Brexit
As of writing this article, there is still some debate on whether ‘vaccine passports’ will be required from British travellers to cross into European borders. What’s certain for now is that the UK is not exempt from border restrictions that may prevent travel into the EU borders. The UK is currently under third-party travel restrictions when it comes to the EU, and many Brits trying to holiday in the EU have reportedly been turned away as their trips were not deemed essential in the current global climate.
Japan, South Korea, and Australia are enjoying special allowance to enter EU borders due to their unique negotiations and lower COVID rates. EU officials have commented that there are no current plans to introduce the UK into this special border allowance. The global pandemic situation is likely to change, though, as will UK travel guidelines within the EU, so it’s best to check with your destination country before booking and taking your trip.
Easiest Destinations for Brits to Travel in Europe After Brexit
With Brexit completed and Britain entering new negotiations regarding travel within the EU, it’s looking like EU travel will still be just as possible and equally enjoyable. But which European states are going to be the easiest destinations for Brits to Travel in Europe in Europe After Brexit, even with new restrictions? Currently the countries below are some of the best EU destinations to British citizens. By offering easy and high quality healthcare accessibility, easy immigration policies, and having a high percentage of English-speakers, these are the top countries to visit after Brexit as a UK citizen:
• Spain and France
• Mainland Portugal
• Germany
• The Netherlands

Johnson defeated: It's now a guerrilla war to stop his Brexit deal
Tumblr media
By Ian Dunt
In the end, it was all for nothing. What was billed as the war to decide Brexit turned out to be just another battle. But what happened in parliament today will set the stage for a brutal last-ditch fight in the weeks to come, as opponents of Boris Johnson's deal struggle in the trenches to try and stop it.
Johnson's deal triggered something. It is, in truth, a bad deal. It's certainly worse than that brought back by Theresa May. But MPs are so fed up with the Brexit issue, so desperate to get a result, that they looked ready to support it. The DUP rejected it, but many of the purged Tories, who were thrown out over opposing Johnson a few weeks ago, seemed reluctantly willing to back it, as were many pro-deal Labour MPs. It looked like it could just about slip through.
If it had done so, the question of whether Britain will leave the EU would now be over. It would be settled. But then Oliver Letwin, not for the first time in this saga, threw a spanner in the works.
He introduced a very simple but devastating amendment. It stated that the House would not have given consent to the deal until the government had passed the full legislation implementing it - not just the short one-paragraph motion asking if MPs backed it.
Politics has an ironic sense of  morality sometimes. If the Brexiters in the hardline ERG faction had behaved with more honour in the last few years, the amendment would not be necessary. But Letwin didn't trust them. He was worried that they had an opportunity to subvert the Brexit process to secure no-deal.
If the deal had passed today, it would have neutralised the Benn Act. This stated that if a deal had not been approved by 11pm tonight, the prime minister had to request an extension of Article 50 from the EU. Once that happened, there would be no insurance policy against no-deal. The ERG could then sabotage the deal by voting against the legislation implementing it.
That was the danger scenario the amendment sought to address. It locked in a deal. Only if the full law was passed would it be considered to have consent.
The votes came in tight. As MPs debated in the Commons, and a steady stream of enormous roars shook parliament from the hundreds of thousands of People's Vote protestors outside, the ten DUP MPs in the Chamber went off for a meeting with ministers. For a moment it seemed that they might abstain.
If they had done, it would have failed. It was a heart-stopping moment. The amendment passed by just 322 to 306. That meant that it rested on eight MPs. The DUP's lack of support had cost Johnson everything. The motion was then passed with the amendment. It meant there would be no meaningful vote on the deal. MPs were forcing the government to bring forward the legislation.
That opens up a new stage of battle over Brexit. But it is only a temporary reprieve. The reality remains stark. Johnson has the upper hand.
Look at the numbers. The amendment passed by eight votes. But those votes will not translate directly into opposition to Johnson's deal. Plenty of the purged Tories have said they are prepared to vote for the deal.
Nick Boles, Ken Clarke, David Gauke, Oliver Letwin and Antoinette Sandbach all voted for the amendment and have said they would vote for the deal. The government probably expects to tempt over Phillip Hammond and Amber Rudd. There were also Labour MPs sympathetic to a deal, like Gareth Snell, who backed the amendment.
Basically the numbers are eye-wateringly tight. As things stand, the prime minister probably has a majority for his deal - of a handful of votes, maybe as few as one or two. Everything is poised on a knife edge.
Publishing the legislation could change everything though. Having all the details out there, in brutal black and white, might change minds. It's possible that it could outrage the ERG sufficiently to turn it against the deal, although given how rock-solid they were today that seems unlikely. It might push wobbling Labour MPs into opposition.
Amendments on it could force the debate in one direction or another. It might give MPs a chance to secure a second referendum. Or the DUP could use amendments to protect Northern Irish trade with Britain.
On the other hand, the govt could use amendments to provide more paper-thin assurances to Labour MPs and pull them over into backing it.
Either way, it puts the debate in a new setting, on different terms, with new battlefields, and on an extended timetable. It means critics of Johnson's deal are now in a guerilla warfare campaign, their backs against the wall, using whatever tactics they can find to try and stop this thing.
Today's vote was a pause and reformulation of the assault - it did not stop it.
And then, as the session wound down, the sun came out and crowds started celebrating in parliament square, the government tried a new trick.
When he responded to the vote, Johnson seemed to confirm that he would bring forward the legislation next week. But then suddenly something changed. Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of the House, got up to speak. And he said something extraordinary.
On Monday, he said, the Commons would vote on a motion under Section 13.1b of the European Union Withdrawal Act. That is the meaningful vote mechanism.
It was an incredible thing to say. It meant the government intended to ignore the result today - simply pretend it never happened - and then try to force the House to again back the deal on a basic motion, rather than the legislation.
Mogg didn't even announce this using a normal business of the House statement. That would've meant that he would have to take questions from MPs. Instead, he did it using a point of order. He could just say it and sit there, silent, failing to answer any of the issues which rose from it. Then he simply got up and walked away from the Chamber, followed by shouts of "outrageous".
The government seems desperate not to  publish that legislation. But it's not clear that they can get away with it. When May tried to pass her deal through the House repeatedly, she was stopped by Speaker John Bercow. Governments that lose votes aren't supposed to just keep on trying until they get the answer they want.
"What the government is attempting to do," Letwin said, "is nothing more and nothing less than to repeat what would have been the effect of today."
Bercow seemed to feel the same way. He fired a warning shot at the government. "The apparent purpose of the said motion which ministers are attempting to table is to invalidate or obviate the effect of the decision which the House reached today," he said. "And that does seem most curious or irregular." This is parliament-speak for a fight. "The government is not the arbiter of what is orderly. That cannot be so. And it is not so. And it will not be so." Chances are Bercow will kill this effort on Monday.
Meanwhile, Johnson was planning dirty tricks on his other front. "I will not negotiate a delay with the EU," he told the Commons after the vote. "And neither does the law compel me to do so."
It's true. The law requires him to request an extension of article 50 by 11pm tonight, until January 31st 2020. But he does not need to go and try to convince the EU to accept that request. And he will almost certainly now push them to stay silent.
Let's be clear. No matter what anyone says, the EU will not reject it. They won't throw out a member against their will and they will not sacrifice the Republic of Ireland to the chaos of no-deal. But they don't have to reply to the request until the end of the month, possibly even the day before October 31st. And their interests are now aligned with Johnson. They want the deal and so does he. So to increase the pressure on parliament they may well decide to hold off on that decision.
This is stark, harsh, brutal political warfare, with impossible odds. Remainers are up against it. The government is using numerous dirty tricks to force them to capitulate. The EU are being unhelpful. MPs are volatile and jittery. The numbers in the Commons, for the first time, seem to be narrowly for a deal.
But this is very far from over. The legislation will be a horror show, which could change the debate. The legal background is firm - the Benn Act is triggered and an extension will be granted.
And there's something else, something more important. Today, in central London, hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people marched for a People's Vote. They snaked through the capital, from Hyde Park to Westminster, in extraordinary numbers. They have been libelled and laughed at and belittled - by MPs, political leaders, journalists and others - for over three years. But they have not given up. They have fought, relentlessly, unceasingly, against Brexit.
They have the strength to win this, to pressure MPs, to make the case, to win the argument. And now they have more time to do so and more weapons to use. This thing is about to enter its most dangerous stage. But it is not done. It can still be turned.
The government lost today. And it can lose next week too.

Writing About Brexit: This is not the end
Writing About Brexit: This is not the end
This was first posted on Facebook at 11pm on 31st January month 2020, with support from my Ko-Fi network.
Fuck Brexit.
We’ll be back.
Meantime: Boris Johnson wants you to believe he did “Get Brexit Done” – he’s lying. He’s just landed the UK in a horrible unfixable mess, that’s all.
He won’t want to be reminded to release the Russia report on Russian interference in the 2016 EU referendum– so…

What now for UK Citizens living in Spain?
Well, that’s it …… it’s all FINALISED (the withdrawal agreement that is...)
Brexit will happen at midnight Spanish time on Friday Evening (11pm UK time) and the WITHDRAWAL AGREEMENT IS NOW LAW
As of 1st February, things will remain more or less the same for those Brits living in Spain with RESIDENCIA, Spanish driving licences and all other paperwork in order. For all others, please get the residencias, licences etc. sorted ASAP, but at least before the end of the year.
Negotiations between the EU & UK will commence sometime around the beginning of March, with Boris Johnson intending to finalise the transition period on the 31st December 2020 (but that remains to be seen, as currently many think that date impossible to achieve). Around June/July, the EU will decide if the December 31st date is achievable – but as said above – it's really impossible to say how this will go.
If the transition period ends on the 31st December, then that’s it – the end - & the UK then has to manage on its own without any help from the EU for the foreseeable future.
The UK driving licence looks likely to be unusable (for Spanish residents) as from the 1st January 2021 …. If you're still in the process of swapping over to a Spanish licence, then the DGT has said that all paperwork must be submitted before the 31st OCTOBER (not December), but if you haven’t registered to do this before the 31st January 2020, THEN YOU'RE UNLIKELY TO BE ABLE TO (unless the transition period is made longer, but as of now that is not planned).
Brits visiting Spain will need an international driving permit (available from UK post offices) and must be produced alongside current UK licences when requested.
Spanish driving licence holders will continue to be able to drive in Spain, the EU > AND THE UK without the need for international driving permits.
ALL RESIDENCIA holders (as of the 1st January 2021) will be OK in Spain, and as the withdrawal agreement was passed into law on the 29th January 2020, our future health cover and living conditions should be virtually unaffected (but arriving Brits going forward? Hmmm....)
UK state pensions will receive their annual increment.
Those of us (with residencias) reaching state retirement age after this date, will also be protected in the same way as current pensioners, so they will still apply for a UK S1 form when they reach state retirement age.
Those of us with specified UK government pensions (not the state pension) will continue to receive the tax concessions we currently receive (due to the UK/Spanish double taxation agreement) which is unaffected by Brexit.
Sometime AFTER 1st January 2021, those of us with official residency will need to apply for the replacement 'third country national' residencia card known as a TIE. This should be a relatively smooth process (hopefully) but may involve having to produce some documents relating to income/pensions etc.
Those with PERMANANTE status already will find the process easier, but it shouldn’t be too difficult for those with non-permanent residency either.
The Schengen area travel restrictions will commence for those of us resident in Spain at the end of the transition period (31stDecember 2020) together with all Brits visiting from the UK. At that time (1st January 2021), we can continue to live and travel within Spain without restriction permanently, but the ability to travel to other Schengen area countries will be restricted to up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Brits in the UK can only visit all Schengen countries (including Spain) collectively for 90 days in any rolling 180-day period.
For those thinking of importing UK vehicles to Spain, this is expected to be even more costly as third country status applies, so please consider whether it’s really worth doing. This, together with the low value placed on RHD vehicles and the disadvantages of the steering wheel being on the wrong side (for vehicle safety that is), really does question the reason for bringing them here.
EHIC cards will continue to useable until the end of the transition period, but as of the 1st January, 2021, all visitors will need full travel insurance.
For those people living in Spain (& other EU27 countries) as of the 1st January 2021, WITHOUT A LEGAL RESIDENCIA, you will be classed as illegal immigrants and liable to removal at any time (as applies to illegal immigrants in the UK).
To all those living in the UK, good luck (& your going to need it! ).
To all those ´legal` Brits here in Spain …. life will go on virtually as normal "
CONCLUSION;
With residentia before the end of the transition period > all should remain as it is now.
With residentia dated after the transition period, you have no health cover or rights above that of a third country immigrant
Without residentia after the transition period means you will be classed as an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT and treated accordingly (without the protection of the EU) – meaning removal from whatever EU state back to the UK at your own cost.
We can help with a residencia or residency application, a driving licence exchange and health care insurance in addition to providing a full range of Spanish and international legal services.
