Day Two of 31 Days of Dolloween featured Astrid, Emmeline, Estella and Edith putting up Halloween decorations with friends, which is their favorite thing about the season of Autumn! Nothing beats spending time with friends and celebrating a holiday.

October photo challenge, Day 2: favorite things.
Samantha: “They’re are a lot of things I love about fall but my most favorite thing of all is that it’s the season my Grandmary convinced Mrs. Van Sicklen to hire Nellie and her family! I don’t know what I would have done if I never saw my best friend again!”

10/19-
Today’s Dolloween prompt is all about wearing black…unfortunately, I discovered that I don’t in fact, own any black doll clothes, except the lacy black shawl and a pair of black boots. Still, I did my best with Kirsten as my model. Then, because Dolloween isn’t AG exclusive, I decided I could/should fish out two of the crocheted Marvel dolls I made, since they are at least mostly black yarn: Black Panther and Miles Morales. Close enough?

Today's Dolloween theme is friendship. Like me, Anaya is shy and has trouble making new friends. But Addy made her feel right at home as soon as she got here, and now they're almost always together!

October photo challenge, day 13: Friendship.
Marie-Grace and Cécile might seem very different from each other, but they are the dearest of friends. When they first met, they bonded over their feelings of loneliness and yearning for adventure. Then when an epidemic of yellow fever brought tragedy to New Orleans, they learned to rely on each other to get through the darkest times.

Day 3 of Dolloween captures this peaceful moment; Kirsten, Josefina and Melody cuddling by the fire to keep warm. Of course, they all have their dolls with them! Josefina often likes to read to the girls when they’re restless and have had a crazy day. There’s nothing better than spending time with friends and having a cozy night in.

Dolloween, Day 6: O for Orchard. Molly loves going to the local orchard to climb the trees so she can pick crabapples, which will be made into a delicious cider. When she gets tired, she finds a nice branch to lay on and enjoy the cool air but warm sun.
Hat, plaid shirt, leggings: Maplelea Northern Spirit; skirt: Mia’s meet outfit; shoes: Etsy shop DollyLovnDollClothes
(I love how the hat covers up Molly’s ridiculous bangs! Girl has permanent hat hair right now)

October photo challenge, Dolloween day 15: learning something new
For Halloween, Addy has traveled through time and dressed up as real person Dorothy Vaughan (1910-2008). Vaughan was profiled in the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly and movie of the same name (where she was played by Octavia Spencer).
Few people have experienced as much joy as I did sewing a 1960s career bureaucrat suit for my doll.

Dorothy Vaughan worked as a human computer (person who performs mathematical computations) and then manager of an all-African American group of human computers in the 1940s at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory for the agency called NACA. She was the supervisor of Katherine Johnson, the mathematician also highlighted in the book and movie, at one point.
In 1958, the group moved to NASA, which was not racially segregated. (The movie flattened the timeline to keep everything in 1961). As machine computers started to displace their human computation work, she learned and trained others in the programming language FORTRAN. FORTRAN is a close-to-the-machine (i.e. not easy) language, and according to her NASA biography, she became an expert at it. Vaughan retired from NASA in 1971.
The fact that she was able to get her career start in the 1940s is due to a couple of historical changes, as described in the Hidden Figures book. One is something that is also described in the AG Molly books- men being off at war created demand for women to fill jobs in the formal market. Another is that, under political pressure, Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9346 in 1941, which opened professional jobs to African-Americans.

When discriminatory practices are struck down, brilliant minds shine through. That gives us some sense of how much potential has been wasted when that discrimination was in place. Shetterly profiles Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson in the book, but she's also talking about changes that a larger cohort of African-American women went through. Shetterly says "I can put names to almost fifty black women who worked as computers, mathematicians, engineers, or scientists at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory from 1943 through 1980, and my intuition is that twenty more names can be shaken loose from the archives with more research." This is in addition to white female computers, mathematicians, etc. employed by Langley during the same time period, who were breaking barriers based on sex but not simultaneously based on race.
I really appreciate that the movie, based on the book, brought attention to Vaughan and other "hidden figures." If you're interested in a short bio, please see: https://www.nasa.gov/content/dorothy-vaughan-biography

October photo challenge, Day 3: Cozy. Sometimes after dancing and participating in cultural events (typically October has the CRC Powwow, Indigenous People Day, and Grandparents Celebration all in the month of October) its nice to just enjoy the other preformers and spend time with your sister cuddled up under a blanket.
