achilles' heel | hoshina x f!reader
synopsis: the vice-captain has always been invisible, the perfect adjective for someone who is in a job where people come and go.
warning: language! (aside from that there's none... i think)
Tumblr media
a/n: just very self-indulgent ! i hope my hoshina gurlies will love this 🤞🏼🥰🤍
"What's the situation in Tachikawa?"
"Not good. The amount of Yojus is continuously increasing," Konomi reported, "Shinomiya is helping a ton right now. But, this will be really, really bad if you don't go here immediately, Vice-Captain,"
Out of all the days, he had to go to the headquarters today for the monthly briefing with the general. Out of all the days, he thought in disbelief. He should've taken that unsettling feeling of seeing the squad, and you, smiling at each other this morning before he and Mina went.
"How many more minutes?" Mina asked the officer who was preparing for the special transportation that they would use to go back to Tachikawa base.
"30 minutes, Captain—"
"Make it ten," Sochiro says with finality.
"Vice-Captain Hoshina, that will be impossible to do—" Maybe it's a combination of fear, anxiety, and desperation, but in the blink of an eye, Sochiro grabs the collar of the officer in front of him, "Make it ten."
"Hoshina." Mina calls his name, making him stop. Holding onto Sochiro's shoulder, Mina prompted him to step back from the officer, "Please make it as fast as you can. We cannot waste more time."
"R-Roger!"
"Calm down, Vice-Captain," Mina spoke again, "They will be fine. Our officers are strong."
He knows that. He knows that more than anyone. He trained those officers with his own hands and pushed them every day to their limits. He's the one who guided them from the very beginning. But there's this... fear... that he cannot explain. And he hates himself for that.
Soshiro knows better than anyone that attachments should not be fostered in this line of work. They have a job with no certainty of tomorrow. People come and go all the time. As someone who has been here for the past years, gained and lost comrades in every mission, Soshiro thinks that he'll be smart enough to not fall in love with anyone. But that day... was just different.
When you walked into the exam room and he first saw you on the screen from the operations room, your hair was a little messy but in a pretty way, you were smiling at everyone, and you were so happy to get that 7% combat power for the first time. You were the most gentle in that batch, aside from being the most beautiful, and something about you messed with his brain.
It's like you wore your empathy like a weapon.
The first time he interacted with you alone was after your first mission. Soshiro got injured after saving an officer. He doesn't usually get injured with small-fry Kaijus, besides, he's one of the strongest in the Defense Force, but the timing was off and the only thing he wants is to save that officer. You did the first aid for his bleeding arm and continuously checked on him after that.
Soshiro couldn't explain it. He just woke up one day without the walls he hardly built up and found himself scared of losing you. He found himself secretly pursuing you inside the base. Giving you small gifts like it's a mission. Leaving just because flowers, mostly peonies, whenever he can drop by that flower shop near the Hoshina mansion. Leaving you notes with a smile on his face because the whole dorm is wiretapped. Requesting day-offs that coincide with yours. Soshiro was confused, but he was happy.
He shuts his eyes. How fucking selfish of him to only think of you right now, right?
"Let's go, Hoshina. They are ready."
Reports are continuously done through their earpieces. He can only listen. As long as he can still hear your name in action. Please, you have to hold on. Just until they are back to the base.
"Fortitude 9! A daikaiju just appeared! Shinomiya and ___ are facing it right now!"
Shivers went down his spine, and a wave of anger laced his voice as he shouted, "Tell them to back off! Are they fucking crazy?!"
You are not dumb. You are one of the most improved officers. But Fortitude 9 is just too much for your current stats. Hell, it's even too much for Kikoru right now who is much more advanced than you when it comes to skills.
"Hoshina." Mina calls him again, "Trust our officers."
"But—"
"They are not weaklings," Mina says.
You surely aren't. But he is, he admits in his mind. When it comes to you, he is.
The ride to Tachikawa base is agonizing.
When they reached the base, the fire caused by the raid was already gobbling up the buildings. Immediately, Sochiro went straight to the location of the Daikaiju and found you and Kikoru in an awful situation. You're down and unconscious after colliding with a wall.
Kikoru is still okay, but both of you need to go now.
"Vice-Captain!"
"Get out of here, Shinomiya." He commanded.
Kikoru stood up, wanting to get you out of the situation too, but Soshiro noticed her foot injury, "Get out! Now!"
"Vice-Captain, __ is still—"
"Worry about yourself." He says. It's an order. Kikoru knows.
He is a hypocrite. Because the first thing he did was to get the Kaiju away from where you're lying down as much as possible, "I am definitely going to kill you, disgusting piece of shit."
All his life, Soshiro was undermined. He's not good enough. He's not strong enough. His katana will never make a difference. He won't be able to save other people with it. But he did. He became Vice-Captain. Ashiro trusted him. His officers believe in him. But if he won't be able to save you today, then maybe they are right.
"Do you know who that girl is, you ugly fucker?" Sochiro asked the monster in front of him, "Someone you shouldn't touch because I'll definitely tear you to pieces if you do. Go to fucking hell now."
Kaijus has always angered Sochiro. But, the level of rage he has right now is just different and even Mina was shocked. They gave them no time to attack using big weapons as Sochiro went for the core of the Daikaju on his own.
They seized the Kaiju's body in possession for further studies and potential help that it could give the Defense Force. With blood on his forehead, Sochiro sprinted towards you after the kaiju was down. Pulling you close to his arms. You have a heartbeat, but very very injured. He still sighs in relief. As long as there's a heartbeat, "__," he calls for you faintly.
Broken ribs. A head concussion. Damaged weapons and suit maxed out. You really did your best out there. But you're still not a hero. You will never be. You just did your best because you know that he will come. There's no way he won't.
Thanks to the advanced technology of the Defense Force, your recovery was much faster. The Tachikawa base is under renovation after the huge damage and you were transferred to the care of Division 1 in the meantime, along with Kikoru and the hottest name in the force right now, Kafka Hibino.
Kikoru told you everything that happened. It turned out that Kafka is Kaiju No. 8 and he revealed himself to the force to protect everyone in Tachikawa. Captain Ashiro and Vice-Captain Hoshina thought that the Kaiju was officially down after Hoshina went to you, turns out that the raid is planned out more than the Defense Force expected. You weren't surprised though. You trust your comrades that much.
"Think you can start training tomorrow again?" Captain Narumi asks you.
"Yes, Captain." You feel fine and normal.
"Good," Gen smirked, "I don't give special treatments. Start showing me what you actually got. I am very, very curious."
"Captain," you gathered every courage left to address him.
"Hmm?"
"I'm sorry for asking you but I don't know anyone else here to ask, but is Vice-Captain Hoshina okay?"
Gen's face was painted with astonishment upon hearing your question. You are just wondering... it's not like he needs to answer it. You wrote him a text the moment you got your phone but he never responded. It's also not like he needs to reply, he probably has a lot of things to do after all that damage. But, you're just so worried.
"Do you think I give a fuck about that bowl-cut dude?" Narumi chuckles. Wow, he's really immature, you thought, "If you're asking if he's still alive, unfortunately, yes."
You concluded that you wouldn't get a decent answer from Narumi so you just saluted and went out of his office. When morning came, you were finally out again in the field. But since you're still adjusting, you stick with an exercise routine that you usually do before combat training. And honestly, even if you want to spar with Narumi, you feel like you'll just mess it up.
You can't stop thinking about Sochiro.
But weeks passed after your recovery and you're still waiting to hear from him that you're now pissed. You do not have an excuse anymore and Gen is already forcing you to spar with him. So, you did.
"That's all you got?" Narumi chuckles, pinning you on the ground, "You're overrated."
"What?" Your eyebrows furrowed at him as you kicked his stomach to get out of his grip. But Narumi is strong, there's a reason he's the Captain of Division 1.
"Your Vice-Captain praised you so much," he chuckled.
"Your fault, you believed him." You smirked. Just hearing the word Vice-Captain pissed you off, "Let go of me now."
"Don't wanna," Narumi smirks again.
"What? I'm gonna—"
"Captain Narumi," you were cut off by a voice you longed to hear for weeks. Gen's smile went wider at the sight of Sochiro. This son of a bitch. He knows Sochiro is coming and he's doing this to piss him off. You finally kicked him out of you.
"Well, well, how are you, Hoshina?" Narumi's mocking him.
"Good," he answered, "The meeting will start in minutes, Captain Narumi."
"Too bad I'm busy sparring with my officer,"
"I'm sure Officer __ can wait for you." Your eyes darted to Sochiro. His coldness sent shivers down your spine. The frustration and confusion crawled in your system once again. You haven't seen each other for weeks and this is how he treats you? Like who the fuck cares if Narumi's here? Does he want to be a professional gentleman now?
Or... maybe he's just done with you. Maybe the rumors are right. The Vice-Captain is never serious when it comes to his relationships. Now that you're not under his wing, he's already done. Maybe that's it, then?
Narumi doesn't really have a choice so he stood up and went with Sochiro to go to the meeting, leaving you alone in the training room. Just in time for dinner, you went with Kikoru and Kafka.
"Vice-Captain is here, have you seen him?" Kikoru asked. You nodded quietly.
After dinner, you changed to a pair of sleepwear. Don't get it wrong, you love Division 1. But you just really want to go back to Tachikawa.
Unable to sleep, you stayed looking at the window from your room. You're in the same position when the raid happened. You remembered thinking about what's really between you and Sochiro. Maybe you got the answer you want now.
"How are you?" You almost jumped out of shock as you hear his voice. Sochiro stands beside the door, "The door is unlocked. I'm sorry."
You looked away from him— tearing up. Wow, he's here, but does that make up for the days he ghosted you? This asshole. Maybe Narumi should really punch him in the gut.
"If Narumi is forcing you to train, tell me—"
"Shut up."
"I'm sorry, baby,"
Oh, how you hate this man. He knows exactly what to do. He knows exactly how to get you over and over again.
"I hate you so much," you looked at him.
To you, Sochiro is like the stars. Before entering the Defense Force, everyone admired Mina Ashiro. But you were different. You admired the Vice-Captain who is mostly not seen. He saved you once when you were a civilian. He saved you over and over again when you were a cadet, and he still continued to save you when you became an officer.
"Not a single response to my messages? Not a single letter? Do you know how worried I am? Do you know how much I thought that you're blaming yourself for what happened when that's not—" In the blink of an eye, Sochiro envelopes your small figure to his arms.
"I'm sorry,"
"If you're done with me, you can just tell me." You removed yourself from his embrace.
"Done with you?"
"Isn't that the reason why, Vice-Captain Hoshina?" You asked him, "You're probably—"
"You scared the fuck out of me that I got scared even more because I never felt that way before. I was terrified, that I have to take a step back," He spoke, "Tell me why would you face a Daikaiju like that? You have nothing to lose? You're not scared?"
"I am an officer of the Defense Force, Vice-Captain. That is my duty—"
"Fuck that." He hissed, "What about me?"
"What about you?" You asked in confusion. Sochiro is never the type to curse his duty. He loves his job. He fought for this job.
"I can't lose you."
"Sochiro..."
"For years, I fought for the Defense Force thinking I have nothing to lose. Death never scared me. But when I saw you lying down, unconscious, I feel like being punched in the gut a million times, __." Seeing him lose his composure is new to you, "This is so wrong because I have a duty to fulfill and so are you and it's unfair for the Defense Force that we took an oath for, but I just can't... lose you..."
"Sochiro..." you held his face, "You won't lose me just because of that. I am not weak."
"I know." He gave you a weak smile, "But I am... when it comes to you. You're my Achilles' heel."
The great Vice-Captain Sochiro Hoshina is confessing that you make his knees tremble in fear, something not even the biggest Kaiju can do. He envelopes you in his warmth and places a soft kiss on your forehead, "I love you too damn much."

Review: Japanese Special Effects Cinema:Godfathers of Tokusatsu Vol. 1
Over the past Holiday season I was gifted a book I had been wanting to read since its release in April; Japanese Special Effects Cinema:Godfathers of Tokusatsu Vol. 1 by J.L Carrozza.
As the book's title suggests, it's a comprehensive guide on the history of Tokusatsu. Vol. 1 spanning from the early 1900s to the end of the 1970s, progressing in a linear fashion with each major release while also providing context when needed. The start of the book gives a general overview of the special effects landscape in cinema from the earliest days, with works from international filmmakers laying the foundation that would eventually lead to Japan's own contributions and unique visual styling developed in the 30s.
The book truly picks up in the second chapter spanning from the late 30s to the end of WWII, when the concept of scale miniatures was truly crafted into an artform all its own and early suitmation was coming to fruition. The general presentation is to give historical context and background information on an upcoming project, followed by a particular film including its title, director, the film's release date, and the production history of the film itself.  Carrozza then delves into his own general analysis and thoughts on the film or series, with a particular focus  on (but not limited to) the special effects quality. Finally ending with more information about the film when applicable; contemporary reception, if it was a debut director, or if the film was seen by and noted as a big inspiration by a well known person. Anno of course comes up a lot, but he's far from the only one. These analytical segments carry themselves with both a professional earnestness in examining the works, while also being fairly casual. One may even get a sense that Carrozza’s sanity is being tested by some of the later Gamera Films, probably some of the funniest moments within the book and one I find incredibly relatable.
Unsurprisingly,  a great deal of the book deals with Eiji Tsuburaya. The man simply was incredibly prolific and damn near everyone in the industry was either directly taught or inspired by him until his death- which even then his many proteges would carry on the tradition and inspiring others in turn, which is one of the most intriguing parts of the book, particularly the aftershocks Tsuburaya’s death had across the entire industry.
However, I do want to point out that the book doesn't pay much service to Tsuburaya's personal life outside of providing context or important details, nor should it. After all, Master of Monsters is already a deep dive into the man's life overall. So while details such as his change in name and conversion to Catholicism are mentioned, they're not the focus point; the movies are. And of course, as major of a player as Tsuburaya was, he is not the only one given the spotlight in regards to their contributions. The Yagi brothers are regularly mentioned for all their monster creations, Noriaki Yuasa of Daiei is regularly talked about, even Tomio Sagisu and his weird Cat obsession. And the list continues to grow and change as new talent emerges, becoming famous in their own right.
By and large Screen Writers, Producers, DPs, pyrotechnics, prop and set builders, and various other units are brought up and given background information whenever possible and always a name to those behind the magic. The information is detailed, yet concise. The sheer dense nature of the book comes from how much is covered and the broad scope of covering every notable Tokusatsu production until the end of ‘79. (I generally can read a novel in about 4 days, this took two weeks)
Quite frankly, it's refreshing to see so much condensed into one space for so many seldom talked about figures in the industry, where they got their start, ended up, etc.
Equally refreshing is a wider focus on not just DaiKaiju films or just one studio, but a plethora of Toku from various genres, production teams, and how the industry shifted over time– to say nothing of the influence major Hollywood films would have on the medium. War films, historical films, disaster movies, even Yokai films, occult films, space films, psychedelic horror, all are covered. And because the book goes in chronological order, the topic is always changing. 1965 kicks off with None But the Brave, then it’s The Retreat from Kiska, followed by Frankenstein Conquers the World, Zero Ace, and then over to Spy Catcher 13 on Television. It's not just about Godzilla, Gamera, and Ultraman. It's also Watari The Ninja Boy, Goke, Wind Velocity 75 Meters, The Bullet Train, Zero Fighter, ESPY, and Japan Sinks-- the film that inspired Shinji Higuchi.
We’re not just focusing on monsters and Super Heroes, even if that will always be the bread and butter of the medium, nor is it even just Japanese films. As long as a Japanese crew was involved in some capacity, however limited (i.e. Inframan) it’s covered.
This is by far the most appealing part of the book for me personally. Not only is its information a goldmine, but it can perhaps serve as an even broader introduction to more than just your typical idea of what Tokusatsu is.
The comprehensiveness and thoroughness of the information contained makes this both a captivating history lesson, and valuable resource to rely upon to gain a better understanding of Japan’s film history– at least in regard to the medium in question… With one exception that I have to get into, and boy do I really hate that I have to do this because 99% of this book is really great.
As mentioned, a large amount of the book revolves around Tsuburaya and those around him, those who could carry on his teachings, and those who would go even further with what practical effects can do. I'm very pleased to say the book doesn't just stop being engaging with Tsuburaya's passing, it's very much interested in where and how the industry gets on without such a prominent figure. Carrozza clearly has a deep love of miniatures in particular, you can tell by the enthusiastic writing this is his favorite aspect of Tokusatsu as it is with most people, and it plays a part in how much information is present. Because of that Tsupro, Toho, and even Daiei have a lot more readily accessible information to their history, just in general. It's why something like Spectreman can have four and half pages of production information, but you're lucky to get one or two on Ninja Arashi. What is there to say about something like that?
That's not to imply any of this information is easy to get, by no means. It's very hard work, particularly to sift through and condense everything- not to mention filtering possible contradicting stories or dated sources. But some things are easier than others. I will say it's impressive the amount of info that's presented for other studios, particularly P Productions and even Toei. They're given adequate attention, even in the early days. The back of the book features a full bibliography of all the sources and citations for this information, and a vast number of books pertaining to Tsupro, Toho, Daiei, even a few on P productions. Given their long and vast histories, it's not too surprising that there would be dozens upon dozens of books on the subjects. However, Toei and more specifically Kamen Rider are the odd ones out with the least amount of books, which also isn't surprising.
But this does lead to what is quite possibly the most egregious part, which is Kamen Rider '71's segment.
Now, just to be clear, I don't wanna dunk on Carrozza. What he's done is truly magical and I am deeply appreciative of all that's here. But this part is flawed, and it's putting wrong information out there.
There are some good aspects. The book mentions early production concepts that are often glossed over, like how Tiger Mask was partially the inspiration, and even early concept names like Maskman K, Kamen Tenshi: Masked Angel, and Cross Fire. It covers Masaru Igami, Shinichi Ichikawa, and Shozo Uehara being brought on as writers. Although there's no mention that both Ichikawa and Uehara left to work on Return of Ultraman due to conflicts with Producer Toru Hirayama, while Masayuki Shimada and Hidetoshi Kitamura would take their place.
What is noted is that many of the concepts under Cross Fire were maintained, which is true. The Scars that show up when angered, Ruriko Midorikawa as the daughter of a dead professor, the Spiderman. All of that was under Crossfire-- Shocker as a villain organization goes back even further. A surprising amount of the concepts were attributed to Toei's creative department, even the scars which ended up only appearing in the manga.
Now the book doesn't get into all those fine details, it starts and stops at "Many concepts from Cross Fire were maintained" which is fine. Gotta keep things condensed and a lot of that information is superfluous for this type of book. We don't need to get into Crossmask: Kamen Rider or Hopper King. That's too much of a deep dive.
Where things take a turn is in regards to the design aspects. A popular and incorrect over-simplification of the story involves  Toei wanting a Skullman show or something like it, but then it was decided that would be too violent so Ishinomori came up with the Grasshopper look. Another is the inverse where Ishinomori wanted a Skullman show and Toei said no to the premise/design.
Both of these are wrong with an inkling of truth in them. But the book presents a tale I've never heard. The way it's told here is that Toei wanted a Skull motif to replace Crossfire, but Ishinomori felt it was redundant since he just worked on the Flying Phantom Ship in '69. He created over 50 designs and his son Joe picked the Grasshopper, which played well into some environmental themes Ishinomori was pushing for. There is ZERO mention of Skullman made just a year earlier, which is such a bizarre missing piece and the only version of Kamen Rider’s creation that I know of with no Skullman.
As with the others, there are true parts in there.
The actual tale is that Ishinomori wanted something downright grotesque and felt that Crossfire's design was limiting. Ishinomori proposed the Skull motif to Toru Hirayama, who in turn relayed it to fellow Producer Yoshinori Watanabe, who despised the proposal. Watanabe felt it was too derivative of Skullman and wanted something original, while the Broadcast Station, MBS, felt it was too scary for their family friendly time slot. Ishinomori made over 50 designs, liked a Grasshopper one best because it was still creepy and helped play into an environmental theme of nature fighting back that Ishinimori was fond of.
There was still doubt around the design, but Ishinomori's son, Joe, went through the designs and picked the Grasshopper, so it was sent for approval.
Tumblr media
Now, this book mentions that Hirayama felt the insect design was weak as bugs are small, but eventually came around. Although it's claimed by Hirayama in his own book that it was MBS' Tetsu Shouno, who felt the insect design was weak, while Hirayama defended it. Hirayama did however have some reservations about the design possibly scaring children. When the helmet was finished, it was shown to a little girl, nearly driving her to tears, much to Hirayama’s horror. But it was too late to change. The rest of the book’s segment is largely what seems speculative, like The Hulk being an inspiration because...transformation? One part also mentions that they originally wanted the character to Grow a la Ultraman, but Ishinomori talked them out of it- I've not been able to find anything to support that. The closest I know of off hand was many years later in Kamen Rider J, which Ishinomori was supposedly against with exception to if it was treated like a one off miracle at the end of the movie. That doesn't mean it’s not true to ‘71, mind you, but I can't say that's an unheard of gem of information, given the flaws elsewhere.
What's weird is everything following is fine. The analytical section doesn't really get into the human themes of the series, but it rightly points out the grittier overall tone and appearance of the series, noting the first 13 episodes are among the best of the era. Specific designers at Equis are also mentioned, including Akira Takahashi, Tsutomu Yagi, and Masamitsu Sakuma. Information like that isn't often discussed, it's just a shame that so much the preceding info is garbled if not outright wrong.
But it's also not all too surprising as information on Kamen Rider has always been extremely muddled, and there aren't a ton of solid resources in comparison to other productions, despite how notable the franchise is. I think the best example of that might be that goddamn Zone Fighter has more detailed information on the production side than Kamen Rider does (Though it doesn't hurt that Zone Fighter is more effects focused than Rider to begin with).
In stark contrast with the rest of the book's well researched material, Rider feels like the information is half remembered and lacking the details of other productions. Even when we get into V3 which has much more readily available information thanks to airings in Hawaii and a DVD release, it has a fairly sparse section on the production end.
And there may be some truth to the half remembered details part. One of the books listed as a source is Fujioka's The Truth about Kamen Rider and Takeshi Hongo, published in 1999. And I would not be shocked if some of the information contributed to not only the odd information contained here, but the general murky history overall. There's a solid chance Fujioka's recollection may have forgotten some details, or gotten some wrong. I would've hoped that another book cited; Toei x Ishinomori would've corrected that, but there's no telling how detailed that book gets.
Regardless, other works like 2007's The Men Who Made Kamen Rider tell the story above, in addition to Toru Hirayama's 2012 bio: Crybaby Producer's Last Words - 50 Years of a TV Hero's Steps. Neither of course are in the bibliography. Even if we were to very generously assume that Hirayama's book was incorrect or embellished, I think it would be worth mentioning and getting into the varying scenarios instead of relying on a limited source when the information is out there, just not utilized.
It's a shame because I do truly feel this is an invaluable book with solid information, especially for lesser known productions, one that also gives a look at how trends would shape the industry. Hell, I finally have a name and photo for the damn machine Toei used for all its composite shots; the Totsu ECG system.
I still highly recommend the book to anyone interested in Japanese special effects, a ton of love was poured into this. But I also can't overlook that a major franchise has a mess of garbage information that only further clouds the murky waters. I hope this is corrected in a 2nd edition or at least updated info is mentioned in Vol 2 due in March. As is, do not cite or rely on this as a source for Rider history, it's the one spot I can definitively say is bad.

30 Day Kaiju Challenge Day 8
Name: Dreean
Age of origin: Modern Mutant
Length/Height: 75 Meters long
Description: Dreean is a mutant dolphin, and shares a normal shaped body, for the most part. The main points of diversion are the extra fins that line its side and back and the tentacles. Did I mention the tentacles? There’s a lot of those. Sprouting out across Dreean’s body are smooth purple tentacles that get paler towards their sharp ends. Dreean’s skin is much paler as well, looking almost sickly in it’s color, and his mouth seems to go back father than us normal.
Abilities:
Psychic Abilities~Dreean’s most powerful weapon is his mind, which allows him to manipulate other beings a myriad of ways. From simply influencing thoughts, to full on mind controlling from, Dreean’s terrifying psychic abilities are the second most dangerous thing about the mutant dolphin.
Flight~Dreean is somehow able to use his powerful psychic abilities to lift himself off the ground, though this appears to be limited to himself, as he has not used it on other kaiju.
Intellect~The most dangerous thing about Dreean is the mind that lurks within. He is wickedly smart, easily on par with humans, and needlessly cruel. He enjoys toying with mentally weaker kaiju, using physically and mentally stronger kaiju as puppets to torture those less intelligent than himself.
Piercing Tentacles~The tentacles sprouting from Dreean’s body are just as sharp as his mind, able to pierce even kaiju flesh without too much difficulty. Their length is also an asset, and they are dexterous enough to act as makeshift “hands.”
Weakness: Despite Dreean’s powers, he cannot control three rather significant threats, Ameebus, Jake, and Deep Blue. He also lacks the pure brute strength many kaiju wield, and his sadism can easily be used against him.
Backstory: The most recent kaiju sighting was vague at best. Someone had spotted a massive shape moving underwater, but that was all they could tell. Everything else out of their mouth was gibbering nonsense. The next time it was seen, it was similar. People would see the massive shape under the waters surface, but couldn’t recall any details, though they were at least left with their sanity. This was repeated for days, until traces of it just stopped.
Not too far from the last sighting, at a shore town, people began to stir. Rising from their sleep against their will, they walked out of their houses, and just disappeared. Nothing was taken with them, everything was left behind. The entire town was just gone. Investigations were futile, as there were no clues to be found. People had just gotten up at night, walked towards the beach and disappeared. Then it happened again. And again
Finally reaching the next area before the mass disappearance began, the investigators witnessed the people leaving their homes first hand, several of them mentioning feeling a strong urge to follow. When they did, safely of course, what they saw was as confusing as it was terrifying.
The people of the town were just walking up to the water, awaiting the massive tentacles that would rise up to grab them, only to pull them back into the ocean depths. Some would eagerly walk into water themselves, heedless of their imminent deaths. Armed with an experimental new weapon, the army sprang into action, launching it into the water, hoping to scare away whatever was doing this. Instead, it showed it’s face.
The kaiju that lifted itself from the water was unharmed by their attack, merely angered. In response, the kaiju, named Dreean, latched onto the minds of everyone present, turning them on each other in a slaughter. Once every living thing was dead, the kaiju seemed to decide hiding was no longer needed. The wrath of Dreean was let loose.
How they Interact with Other Kaiju: Dreean sees almost every other kaiju as a play thing, an object to be turned to his will to make his feeding all the easier. There are three exceptions to this. The first is Deep Blue, who is immune to the telepathic powers he possesses, and has an overwhelming hatred for the dolphin. The hatred is mutual, and Dreean is quick to use other kaiju to defend himself against her.
The second is the amorphous kaiju known as Ameebus, who seems to have no actual mind for Dreean to control, and while this makes Dreean angry, he is perfectly happy to ignore the thing, maybe sacrifice a kaiju to feed it if need be.
The last is Jake, who Dreean can influence, but cannot control, as the anger that courses through the Kaimera’s body is too great, too overwhelming for Dreean to sway to his favor. While Dreean hates Deep Blue, he looks at Jake’s resistance with less vitriol, and more curiosity. Once he takes hold of Jake’s sister Tweedrak’s mind however, the hatred from Jake becomes very very real.
This was a result of me making a kaiju as weird as I could, with a few random words thrown at me by a friend(who’s name also influenced Dreean’s). It spiralled into more from there, into this monstrosity that I now can’t help but love. He’s evil and sadistic, and the complete reverse of the typical pop culture image of dolphins, which suits me fine. Those assholes get all the love, let the sharks get some love.

Origins: With his kooky cackle and lolloping tongue, it's hard to get much sense out of Trigger Happy. The grinning gunslinger lets his golden pistols do the talking. In fact, his response to most things is to set both barrels blazing. Trigger Happy first appeared in a tough frontier town on the furthest reaches of Skylands. The town was dirt poor and had recently been beset by a band of bully bandits. One day, having grown bored of terrorizing the townsfolk with their bad breath and sheep-shearing jokes, the bandits were holding up the local bank. Outside, their dragon steeds were fired up for a quick getaway.
Suddenly, a short, stumpy stranger strolled into the high street. And after taking one look at the bandits, Trigger Happy started shooting. Gold coins sprayed everywhere, embedding themselves into the buildings and the behinds of the bandits, who promptly hightailed it out of there. The town was made instantly rich and Trigger Happy a legend. His gold-slinging antics soon reached the ears of Master Eon, who immediately made him a Skylander. Trigger Happy remains true to his name, by shooting first and asking questions later. Actually, he never bothers to ask questions.
Then a portal suck Trigger Happy in and lead him to alternate universe of Earth 1218-30 and transform him into his kaiju gremlin form and now he's walking around and trying to find home and now he met Virgo, Crocosaurus, Techno and Thunderbolt and they're Team Daikaiju Warriors. Then Trigger Happy reminds Virgo and Crocosaurus are Spyro and Gill Grunt, and now he made friends with them as long he's get back home.

Gender: Male

#KAIJUly2019 Day 3: least favorite Godzilla movie Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. I like the soundtrack and the last fight. I'd rather watch about 30 other G movies though. My bottom 5 are about the same, but I'm most vocal about this one for some reason . . . #kaiju #daikaiju #tokusatsu #megaguirus #monster #godzillavsmegaguirus #michiruoshima #litty #millenniumgodzilla #kaijuly #godzilla #dragonfly #blackhole #hawkingradiation #gojira #ゴジラ #メガギラス #film #film #toho #mrbean #rowanatkinson #british #monsterverse #gojira https://www.instagram.com/p/BzeA9-sA2w-/?igshid=1nw5r9k0kr3dm

Calling all artists and writers!
The wonderful monsters of daikaiju eiga have received many different designs in their film careers. Some of these designs are controversial, enough that some fans have questioned “just how far can they go before it’s not the kaiju?” Well, that’s where you come in. This 30-day challenge is all about pushing limits, taking our favorite kaiju to places we didn’t think they could go. This is your opportunity to display your creative talents and showcase your most radical redesigns of classic kaiju!
Here’s the sitch:
- Take 30 kaiju (listed under the “Keep Reading” tab) and radically alter their designs into something we haven’t seen before.
- This challenge includes art (hand-drawn or computer), writing (1-2 paragraphs), and Photoshopped images.
- For writing prompts, please remember to focus on describing the design of the kaiju through words and imagery. Paint a picture in your reader’s mind.
- For photoshops, please make them as “sourceless” as possible, (i.e. blend the elements together efficiently so they don’t just look like a jumbled mess of monster parts).
- Personal restrictions are a-ok! You don’t have to push every single boundary, but try to keep them non-traditional.
- Please no excessive gore, pornographic or offensive imagery, please.
- No humanized characters. Please remember that these are kaiju and the designs should remain as such.
- Already completed art (as in, created before the challenge) is allowed, however do not steal art that is not yours.
There are no limits to your imagination, although we do ask that you please follow these rules to make this challenge fun and safe!
When does it start? Any time you feel like it! This is a timeless challenge, meaning you can do it at any time on any day of the week of any month! Restricting this to a single month or time frame can restrict the creative process, and we don’t want any of that!
To keep track, tag your posts with “#kaiju redesign challenge”!
Here’s the list of kaiju for each day. Have fun and get creative!

2.       Mothra
3.       Rodan

30 Day Kaiju Challenge Day 6
INESCTOID
Name: Kuchong
Age of Origin: Ancient Kaiju
Height/Length: 15-40 meters
Description: Kuchong Allstate the same body type, with variation among them ranging from less limbs to different limbs entirely. However, they all share the same type of insectoid body, which resembles that of a mantisfly. The difference comes in their standard coloration, which is orange, and their chitin being boxier. They commonly share many other traits, such as their fly-like sings, mantis-like arms and occasionally a second set of arms similar to those of a scorpion. Their feet also each end in spikes, meant for stabbing into a kaiju’s flesh and hold themselves there.
Abilities:
Flight
Numbers
Energy Generation-By vibrating their wings just right, some Kuchong can produce a stunning energy attack, that is especially useful in large groups.
Backstory: The Kuchong are another example of ancient Kaiju reawakened in the modern day, and are easily the most numerous kaiju in existence. Kuchong were once Kaiju scavengers and parasites, latching onto Kaiju and feeding off their blood, skin, and corpses, but now, with less Kaiju inhabiting the planet, their appetites have turned towards the most plentiful prey species on the planet: humans.
How they Interact with Other Kaiju: Kuchong are acraid of most kaiju, as they individually stand little chance. They either avoid detection and latch onto them when it’s safe to do so, or if they must fight, they do so in great numbers.
The Kuchong here are an odd case of being turned from one kaiju into a whole army of them. The original is still around, if a bit different. Her role has changed a bit, with parts being split into all of these little fellas.

30 Day Kaiju Challenge Day 7
Yokai
Name: Tengudo
Age of origin: Unknown
Height: 70 Meterd
Description: Tengudo is a humanoid avian, sporting feathers across his entire body. The feathers are primarily green, resembling the garb worn by yamabushi. Tengudo’s face is dominated by his red beak and his eyes, which glow green constantly. His arms are also his wings, and he possesses fully articulate hands, which resemble his feet in texture.
Abilities:
Flight -
Sword Summoning - In a flash of green flame, Tengudo can summon an ornate sword, which he can use with extreme proficiency. Although it appears to be less summoning and more creating, as there appears to be no limit to how many he can bring forth.
Ethereal Flames - Using the same green fire that summons/creates his swords, Tengudo can form balls of fire that he uses as projectile weapons.
Weakness: Tengudo’s main weakness comes in his relatively small size for a kaiju. He is shorter than most kaiju, and lacks significant bulk to make up for it. While he is certainly skilled, and his swords are dangerous, his bulk is lacking.
Backstory: Tengudo appears to be from the same time as Pyraformes, which is an anomaly itself. He merely appeared in Japan in a flurry of fire to defend it from an invading kaiju. Unlike Pyraformes, he gave no care to the people or buildings destroyed in the ensuing battle, and ever since has shown just as little care for human life.
How they Interact with Other Kaiju: Tengudo is perfectly comfortable of leaving other kaiju alone, as long as they intend no harm to Japan itself. If they are merely there to roam, or even target humans, he does not care. Even kaiju that do seek him or his home harm can be left alone if they decide to leave in peace. If a kaiju refuses to accept defeat and continue battle however, only then isTengudo willing to end their life.
Tengudo is the one that really solidified the magical birds idea, as he started out being unrelated to Pyraformes only for me to realize my two explicitly magic kaiju were both avians of some kind. Personality wise, him and his kin are all different takes on guardian kaiju, some of whom you’ll see later!

30 Day Kaiju Challenge Day 5
MAGICAL
Name: Pyraformes
Age of origin: ???
Length/Height: 85 Meters
Description: Pyraformes is mostly seen in her “flaming” form, where she is engulfed in cyan flames, with dark red highlights. When not engulfed in the fire, she resembles a Pueo, a species of owl native to Hawaii. Her feathers are a metallic silver, with flecks of brown scattered across her chest and wings.
Abilities:
Flaming Body-Pyraformes’ entire body is engulfed in searing flames, making physical contact with her dangerous.
Burning Flechettes-Pyraformes can fire off her feathers like flaming bullets.
Super Heated Talons-The heat surrounding her body has made her talons extremely hot, allowing them to cut through things much easier.
Weakness: Pyraformes cares about human life, so anything that seeks to gain an advantage against her can exploit that care. If one is able to somehow extinguish her flames, she is far less potent than she is with them.
Backstory: Pyraformes is an oddity among kaiju, as her exact time of origin or mutation is unknown, and she possesses a care for humans matched by few kaiju. She was first witnessed bursting out of Maina Kea, one of the extinct volcanos of Hawaii. Before any military offensive could be made against her, a SECOND kaiju appeared. Without hesitation, Pyraformes attacked and killed the kaiju before returning back to the volcano.
How they Interact with Other Kaiju: The mighty owl is not a fan of other kaiju for the most part. She puts human life before anything else, so unless a kaiju is also actively trying to protect humans(which isn’t very common) she will fight then off. If a kaiju manages to earn her respect, either through combat or defense of humans, she will show them more respect than most humans will their own peers.
Here’s the Mothra equivalent of Age of Kaiju, not very different than she was before! Really, I’m happy with her design, and the main problem I was hwas wether or not she’d be magical at all. She almost wound up a mundane mutant this time! Of course now she’s part of a group of bird kaiju that are all explicitly magic, which I still haven’t named,. It’s funny how things work out isn’t it?

30 Day Kaiju Challenge Day 9
ELEMENTAL I
Name: Allogris
Age of origin: Modern Mutant
Length/Height: 60 Meters tall
Description: Allogris is a six limbed white tiger, the stripes of black fur now blue, and the whiskers adorning her face far more elaborate than before her mutation. Across her body, various patches of fur are left standing on end due to her magnetic powers. Finally, as battle progresses, she coats herself in pieces of metal drawn to her body, making a shell around herself.
Abilities:
Magnetic Field Senses~Allogris can sense fluctuations of magnetic fields from even long distances.
Crude Magnetism~Allogris has the ability to manipulate magnetism, though she does not know how to use it to it’s full effectiveness. She has figured out the basics of pushing and pulling metallic objects, and occasionally shows greater use of these powers, but they are rather underdeveloped.
Metal Shell~Once Allogris starts fighting, her body begins to draw pieces of metal towards it, slowly encasing her body in pieces of scrap. This does slow her down as battle progresses, but it also increases her defences , though she is capable of shedding the metal with some effort.
Tigers’ Claws~The claws adorning her six paws may not have undergone significant mutation, but they are still a tigers’ claws, with the proportionate strength of a kaiju behind them.
Weakness: Her base form in combat isn’t particularly well armored, but she backs this up with her significant speed. However, once she gains her metal shell, her defence increases, but she is much slower as a result. Finally, EMP’s wreak havoc with her senses, throwing them all into disarray.
Backstory: Allogris started as a normal white tiger, before one of the random mutations common with Kaijiation took effect. However, her mutation into a kaiju also brought with it a slew of magnetic powers, which immediately began to draw her towards sources of disturbance in magnetic fields. Which she promptly tore apart. She has continued to do so, drawn to these objects and filled with a desire to destroy them, as their presence fills her with confusion and disorientation. Unfortunately, this includes things such as power plants and electrical wires, which draws her to cities again and again. She has even been drawn to nuclear power plants, laying waste to those and leaving the fallout in her wake. If not for the discovery of her dislike of EMPs, her destructive rampages would be unstoppable.
How they Interact with Other Kaiju: Allogris is rather indifferent to most kaiju, unless they are in the path of her current destructive focus. She doesn’t revel in combat, or desire it…unless Jake is present. The two kaiju hate each other with a passion, their presence acting as repellents for the other. Just being in the others presence can be physically uncomfortable for the two, and they often take it out in violent battles.
Tada! Magnetic elemental! Who unintentionally became Jake’s opposite! Allogris and Jake’s relationship was an unintentional mirror of actual mythological interactions between dragons and tigers, as they seem to be portrayed as enemies. So that spiralled into these two becoming opposites of each other!

30 Day Kaiju Challenge Day 1
BURROWER
Name: Grigous
Age of origin: Awakened Ancient.
Length/Height: 60 meters
Description: Grigous shares a body shape very similar to marsupial moles, covered in thick, shaggy white fur. Her eyeless face continues the resemblance, but is covered in a stone-like substance, and an organ can be seen pushing it’s way outwards, resembling the nose of a star nosed mole. The stone-like substance is also scattered across various places on her body. Her front limbs are thin and wide, with razor sharp claws on the ends that tear through rock with ease. Behind the front limbs is a middle pair, usually tucked against her chest, and her back pair is little more than a pair of fins, mostly for steering.
Abilities:
Honed Claws-Grigous’ claws are ridiculously sharp, able to tear through solid rock with ease. Not even a kaiju’s tough hide can stop them for long.
Burrowing
“Stone” armor-The stone-like growths are extremely thick and durable.
Extra Arms-The arms tucked against her chest are easily missed, even when one is examining her. They can be quite the surprise.
Weakness: Grigous is about as timid as they come. She runs from kaiju on sight, and even the military has been known to scare her off. She’s also not the fastest kaiju above ground, and if the rock is thick enough it can take time for her to dig through.
Backstory: Grigous is one of the ancient kaiju that was awoken from her thousand year slumber. What cause this is unknown, but the consequences have been felt worldwide. Luckily, Grigous is mostly harmless, as far as kaiju go. She usually pops out of the earth long enough to look around, seemingly in search of something, before retreating back to her subterranean home. Unfortunately, her tunneling has caused it’s fair share of problems.
How they Interact with Other Kaiju: Grigous is terrified of other kaiju, running away on sight. The reason for this is unknown, but it is believed to have something to do with the stone-like substance covering her body, which is actually scabs formed over thousands of years.
Here we have a revamp of that mole kaiju I created for the old 30 day challenge, who I found was…pretty boring. During the revamp @theload helped me out a ton, as she usually does, and now I absolutely love her. My scared mole daughter. Fun fact, it was during her redesign I decided to make extra limbs a standard Kaijiation mutation!

30 Day Kaiju Challenge Day 2
ACIDIC
Name: Shrisk
Age of origin: Modern Kaimera
Height: 75 meters
Description: Shrike is a Kaimera of a fulmar, a species of seafaring bird, and an unknown second bird. His feathers have become a mix of green and purple, with green being the primary color. In addition, he has grown a second pair of wings. The bottom pair are narrow and short, while the top pair are narrow and long, each for a different kind of flight. His beak has mutated as well, with a prominent, singular nostril, and a sharpened tip. The beak is mostly orange, but blackens at the tip. His tail feathers are mostly unchanged, just becoming larger and slightly more ornate.
Abilities-
Multi winged flight-Shrisk has two pairs of wings, using the bottom for fast flight and the top for long spans of soaring, giving him versatility in the air.
Acidic Spit-Shrisk can spew his stomach acid, which has become violently corrosive, from the prominent nostril on his nose. This acid can melt through metal and buildings like tissue paper, and even kaiju flesh can be injured by it.
Specialized beak-The tip of Shrisk’s beak has become wickedly sharp and hooked, excellent for grabbing onto other kaiju. The acid and beak work in tandem, with the acid weakening skin so Shrisk can grab and rip it off with ease.
Weakness: Despite Shrisk’s versatility in the air, he is still a bird. He is comparatively light compared to most kaiju, and isn’t the most durable one around. His acid also runs off a finite supply, so if he uses it up he’s left with just his beak and wings for combat. He is also extremely cocky, and sees himself as the top of the new food chain.
Backstory: Shrisk is one of the new generation of kaiju, and isn’t a simple mutant, he is a Kaimera. Kaimera are hybrids formed by the cells of a different kaiju mingling with those of a animal, usually a non mutated one themselves, and creating a new kaiju. Upon his mutation, Shrisk became a menace, terrorizing human cities the world over, his unique method of flight allowing him to travel worldwide with relative ease.
How they interact with other kaiju: Shrisk see’s himself as the top of the food chain, as he went from being a normal bird into an absolute giant. He doesn’t think anything is a challenge, even if he comes face to face with a larger, more dangerous kaiju. He tends to be antagonistic, especially when he’s hungry, so as you can imagine, this has not earned the avian kaiju many friends.
I’ve been making an effort to have my kaiju bestiary be diverse in the kinds of animals that reside in it, and Shrisk is the result of that. Bird kaiju aren’t super common, and out a list of unused creatures, Shrisk won out. His acid spit is based on actual fulmars too, which spit seawater out of their nostrils.
