Blue-Green Algae Could Help Treat Cancer And Alzheimer's Disease

The algae you see on lakes and the ocean is called cyanobacteria, and scientists are realizing it has potential to treat some human diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's.

You may have noticed the common blue-green algae on a lake, or a substance that people refer to as “pond-scum.” This algae layer is actually a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria, which can be visible to the human eye in other colors such as pink or red.

Cyanobacteria are also found in the ocean, on cliffs, rocks, hot springs and in other extreme environments. They’re ancient organisms — dating to about 3 billion years ago — and they are the original source of oxygen we breathe today, says William Gerwick, a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California San Diego.

While cyanobacteria can also produce certain toxins that can pose direct threats to humans and animals, there is also a new possibility that the bacteria could treat human disease, according to Nicole Avalon, a NIH National Research Service Award postdoctoral fellow at the Gerwick lab.

“It's those same chemicals that we're looking at for their potential utility in such diverse areas as anticancer treatments, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory agents,” says Gerwick.

Anticancer Discoveries

Avalon hopes to discover new drugs from cyanobacteria to treat cancer and other conditions such as traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's disease.

Cyanobacteria is currently used in one type of drug called an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC). Clinics use this for treating cancer, but it can also potentially be used for other conditions like parasitic or bacterial infections. The drug is a “so-called warhead molecule” that connects to an antibody and the warhead is directed to cancerous cells, malaria parasites or whatever needs to be killed, Gerwick explains.

“The main warhead molecule that's used in five drugs in the clinic today are coming from cyanobacteria,” Gerwick says.

Dolastatin 10 is the potent chemical compound discovered from a marine cyanobacterium that inspired the main ADC cytotoxic warhead molecule. Dolastatin 10-based ADCs have been approved for treatment of different lymphomas and refractory bladder cancer.

Gerwick has looked at thousands of natural products but noticed cyanobacteria had the most pharmaceutical potential. Others might agree. Researchers at the University of Florida discovered a compound from a cyanobacteria off the coast of Florida called gatorbulin-1 (GB1). The study says the compound binds to a new site of tubulin, which is an important target for cancer drugs.

Another compound with anti-cancer potential from cyanobacteria is known as apratoxin F.

“[It] works to kill cancer cells by a pretty unique mechanism that no other approved anticancer medication works by,” Gerwick says.

Gerwick hopes that this new mechanism can treat certain cancers that aren’t responding to other medications. While the compound showed efficacy in mice models in a cancer laboratory at Henry Ford Hospital System in Detroit, there’s much more that goes into this process.

Searching for Compounds

A compound might show potential anticancer activity in lab studies, but some compounds are overly potent and can cause an undesired effect, such as damage to the host cell, Avalon says.

Another challenge is having enough of the drug to use for a clinical trial. And cyanobacteria is important for reasons beyond just human health, Avalon says.

Avalon is now looking at cyanobacterial genomes to try and produce other compounds, specifically ones that can target secondary neuronal injury following a traumatic brain injury, or Parkinson’s, Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.

One of the compounds was discovered from cyanobacteria several years ago and is called gallinamide A. This compound is an inhibitor of enzymes that break down proteins. Research indicates that cathepsin B and L play a role in the development of certain brain disorders. Comparably, inhibition of cathepsin B and L have been shown to have direct implications on neuronal outcomes following brain injury and in neurodegeneration, Avalon says.

“The goal is to identify new inhibitors that target these two proteases. A promising compound could lead to the development of a medicine that would directly impact secondary neuronal injury," Avalon says.

Despite this potential, Avalon stresses her research surrounding cyanobacteria is just at the beginning. It can take decades of work to isolate the structure of a molecule, fully characterize the structure and then identify a bioactivity worth pursuing.

Avalon is aware of this time-consuming process, but she says it’s worth it. “Recognizing that past successes have had very direct implications for human health is a massive motivator for me. If I can play a small role in contributing to a drug getting on the market, that would be very incredible,” Avalon says.

To Gerwick, who has been studying cyanobacteria for around 40 years, these marine organisms are “beautiful creatures” with more potential than what meets the eye.

Wilson-Leon was the manager of a shoe store and longtime love of fellow victim Perez. “They faced the odds, Luis came from Puerto Rico and being gay isn’t totally accepted, obviously here, but it’s not totally accepted there as well,” his cousin Luis Wilson tells. “He is an inspiration. He grew up conflicted but found peace with himself and those around him and he finally had found acceptance and love. Finally found it. And now look.”

Amanda Alvear, 25

Alvear was attending school to be a nurse, and has recently been promoted to the lead pharmacy technician at the pharmacy where she worked, Shannon Marie Baxley, her sister-in-law, tells. “She loved the gay community, the LGBT community. hello! i was looking through your career stories tag and was inspired to ask for some advice of my own. lately i've been feeling very lost in undergrad. in high school, i was super successful, had goals and stuck to them, and had a path in mind. however, i ended up revising that plan a million times, and now i feel super behind in comparison to my peers. i feel like i lack a ton of skills and that i'm not where i should be (1/2)

(2/2) do you have any advice? and do you/your followers have any stories about people who were successful, got stuck in a rut, but found their way back? i keep reading stories about people who didn’t do well in school then found a successful career, but i never hear about people who were successful in school, got lost, then recovered, and it makes me wonder if there’s hope for me

Hi anon! (Thanks for sending in that 2nd part again after tumblr ate it the first time round)

I fee like I took a similar path to you, and before I launch into my story, here’s my advice on some things you can try:

Break the bad habit of comparing oneself to others. We are all unique, with unique pasts, presents, and futures. To compare two people’s achievements or lack of achievements is unfair. That’s giving an experimental treatment to a sick person and another to someone already healthy and then comparing the results directly to each other. Not a good scientific study huh. Well, we should look at our lives like that too. It’ll take time and practice and a lot of active thinking, but let’s all try our hardest not to compare ourselves to others. We are all carving out our own paths. 

Talk to others with experience and get their insight. Talk to your professors, your counselors, your parents, your parents’ friends, and even older students (like me!). Ask them for advice. Ask them what opportunities you have. Ask them what career choices one can make with your interests and goals. Basically, broaden your knowledge of what’s out there in the world so you can find a niche to fit in. I really wish I had done this because I was very myopic in that “interest in biomedicine” = “clinical doctor or bust!”. I didn’t know that I could go to grad school to study cancer research and then go work in a biotech company (my current path and goal). 

Once you find a career path that interests you, try to experience what “a day in the life of” is like. Because something that sounds great on paper may not be a good fit in person, and vice versa. Options for this include: volunteering, internships, entry-level jobs, shadowing, informational interviews (where you talk to someone in the field in a casual setting and ask them what their job is like), and well-rounded research. Doing things like working in the field or even shadowing also gives you the benefit of learning transferrable skills that could help you on your next step. And that brings me to:

Take a gap year (or a few) if you feel like you need it, especially if you need to gain more experience in a certain field. It’s also a great way to give your body and mind a well-deserved break after decades of school! I took a gap year (well, 2.5 years) to work and get lab experience and it was the best. 

Do not give yourself a timeline. This sounds… counter-intuitive, but what I mean is: do not set goals like “dream job at age 30!!” “a house at age 31!!” because they may be a) unrealistic, and b) could set us up for disappointment. Also, we need to realize that we don’t know what the future will bring, and that it’s also ok to take one’s time. We’re all gonna live until we’re 70-80 anyway right? So let’s just take things one step at a time. We’ll set goals and work towards them, yes, but let’s not set deadlines for ourselves. We’ve had enough deadlines in school already! 

Don’t give up. Things will be ok. I know it’s not.. super helpful for me to say this, but it’s a real point to make. No matter what happens, keep trying. We can’t reach the light at the end of the tunnel if we stop walking forward, yeah?

Alright, now to my story, because I feel like I may have gone through the same thing you’re going through right now, so I want to let you know that times may get tough like it did for me, but if you keep going and trying, things will eventually be ok:

Just like you, I was pretty darn successful in high school, also did well in college (like good grades, had goals and met them, etc). I always knew my path was going to lead me somewhere amazing, because that’s how I was brought up my entire life. Then I got stuck in a rut because my original plan A (med school) turned out to not be right for me, and then plan B also turned out not right either (pharmacy school), and then I got straight out rejected from plan C (physician assistant school). I even had to change my major 3 times because of my change of plans (well, one change was because the US recession hit and my college had to cut my original program ugh), so I had to really cram my classes into the summer. I graduated college with a degree that wasn’t going to get me where I wanted to (B.S. in Microbiology, and jobs were still hard to find because of the recession, and basically nowhere to go. I had no job and had no idea what to do (or what I really wanted, really). So I moved back home with a feeling of emptiness that no end in sight. 

My plan was basically to find a job that would open doors for me in the biomedical field. I even got my pharmacy tech license, and I was applying to receptionist positions at clinics. It got to a point where I was so desperate I interviewed to be someone’s personal assistant and they were like “you are way too qualified for this I can’t hire you”. 

And I was so confused as to how I could’ve ended up on the wrong path. I mean, I knew what I did wrong (I didn’t do those point of advice I gave earlier because I didn’t know I had to do them). But I didn’t know how it went so wrong. How did I go from straight A/B’s and proactive student leader in a bunch of clubs to unemployed with no concrete plan in sight? I was bright. I was a hard worker. A fast learner. I knew I could be good at anything I did. This rut I was in wasn’t really supposed to happen. And all the while my friends were going to grad/med school or starting successful careers–a fact my narcissistic and emotionally abusive mother would remind me of every. waking. moment. She would scream at me every day that I was an embarrassment, a disappointment, a “poor investment”, etc. The look of pure hatred she would give me–I have never seen that on another person’s face ever. I couldn’t even see my friends because she essentially put me on house arrest as “punishment”. 

It really was absolute hell. I was cleaning some old storage boxes recently and I found my old diary from that time, and inside was a note. It was a note of despair and resentment and an ending that may have happened… I don’t remember how I got the strength to keep going, but I think I had conjured up the slightest sliver of hope that night, put down my pen, closed the journal, and went to bed. 

So, I kept at it. I studied for the GRE, I looked up grad school programs, and I kept applying to jobs in the biomedical field. I got picked up by a temp agency that was hiring out contract workers to local science companies, and even interviewed for a few available positions. Things were looking a bit better. 

Then I saw a job ad on craigslist looking for a research tech at a lab at my old college. I applied, interviewed, and was turned down. Bummer. Then my mother (in a rare moment of helpfulness) asked a friend of a friend who was a PI in a research institute in Florida if they wanted a totally free unpaid intern. I had a skype interview and they accepted, and I was getting ready to move halfway across the country to be a volunteer with a Bachelor’s degree when I got an email from another new PI at my old college. She had gotten my application from the first PI who I had interviewed with and wanted to meet to see if I could be her research tech. And then literally a week before I was supposed to move to Florida that PI told me she wanted to hire me. Oh thank god. I had graduated in May, and got hired at this position in October. Even though it was only 5 months, it felt like forever for me to finally find my way out of the dark cave and back into the light. 

This PI did research on cancer biomarkers. Working in her lab was one of the best things to ever happen to me: I got the lab experience I was missing, I found a love for cancer research in particular, I applied for (and got into) grad school to study Cancer Biology, and I met a coworker who eventually became my husband (and you betcha we invited the PI to our wedding and asked her to give a speech lol). 

I graduate (hopefully) next semester with my PhD in Cancer Biology, and my husband and I plan on moving to Seattle (a biotech hub) afterwards. I plan on getting a post-doc position at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, then a scientist position at a local biotech company, and then see where that takes me. Life is good now. Things really did turn out ok. 

I’m so glad I never gave up. 

And I hope you won’t give up either, anon. I pray you don’t have to go through anything as tough but! Yes there’s still hope for you! There is always hope

Reflections on Past Institutionalization

Today was the day that I knew would be coming. The day I would have to face, process, and differentiate between my past experiences in psychiatric facilities, and my future stays. I know that all of this doesn’t necessarily happen in one day, but rest assured - it is happening. 

5 years ago, In April of 2015, I entered a hospital in Schaumburg, IL at around 8pm. My Auntie had heard that this hospital offered free psychiatric evaluations, and we had planned to go and have a simple assessment where they could provide insight into which medications were hurting and which were helping my cause. About 6 weeks prior to this, I had been prescribed Celexa as an antidepressant and it caused my depression and anxiety to skyrocket beyond my control, and I became flooded with suicidal ideation. My doctor (the psychiatrist of every student on psych medications throughout my university) insisted that I remain on the medication for 6 weeks. As my symptoms worsened, he prescribed me Trazodone as a sleeping aid and Klonipen to help with my multiple panic attacks daily. As medications were thrown at me, my health worsened. I struggled with sleep disturbances (insomnia, night terrors, inconsistent sleep schedule), I lost weight (food quickly became unappealing on the medications, I had no appetite, I had difficulty eating as I would become nauseous and vomit during and after consuming food) and my health deteriorated. I stopped going to Yoga and working out multiple times a week because I was no longer functional enough to continue. My grades slipped and I received 3 “incomplete”s in my classes and had to finish my work months later for credit. I dropped my commitments to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, alongside many clubs and school groups. I was closeted from my family and all but 2 friends, I had recently broken up with my partner of 3 years. I was in therapy on my college campus, and nothing seemed to be working... so a free psych evaluation sounded like the right thing to do.

That day, I received an award from Loyola University Chicago School of Communications that I was their top student in the Advocacy and Social Change program. Little did the school staff know that within a few hours I would be Baker Acted. I got dressed up and invited my Auntie and 2 friends to the celebration. Like most days when the world feels like it is crumbling, I laughed and smiled and moved through the motions. Saying goodbye to my friends, I packed a weekend bag to head to the suburbs, this was typical seeing that my Auntie is one of my closet friends and mentors, and I frequently “ran away” to her guest room in order to escape my troubles. We agreed to go to dinner with my uncle and cousin, then go for the free evaluation. I pushed food around on a plate and I drank a Shirley Temple with my then 9 year old cousin, Dylan. 

I entered the hospital with Auntie late in the evening. I put in my headphones to listen to Bon Iver because my anxiety was triggered by the hospital environment. I filled out a form that asked two yes/no questions: 

Within the last 24 hours, have you had thoughts of killing yourself? Yes No

If yes, do you have a plan to kill yourself? Yes No

I circled yes for both.

I told myself that dishonesty was not going to get me the help I needed, so I told the truth. After I handed in that questionnaire, my hands were tied. No matter what I said in the clinical evaluation, they would legally have to keep me under the Baker Act. I tried to explain the ways that the medications I was taking were making it worse, how my anxiety and depression were related to trauma, but they were not interested in that. They were interested in protecting me from the threat of myself. The admissions staff informed me that I would be staying for the next few days in the hospital. When I protested and tried to leave, they threatened to call the police. I looked to my Auntie for guidance and she broke down saying “I am so sorry, I wouldn’t have brought you here if I knew they would take you from me”. My auntie is the light of my life and even though this experience was incredibly trying, I am so glad that she was there with me holding my hand and making sarcastic jokes throughout the process. She was, and continues to be, my rock and my safe space. Thank you, Auntie.

I was stripped of my clothes, searched, asked to squat and cough. I was brought into the adult ward with nothing besides the clothes I wore in, and a notebook. I was shocked as I finished the evaluation process - it was now the middle of the night. One of the night staff saw me enter my room and was intrigued because “I don’t look like the other patients in here” to which my response was “what should I look like?” we spoke about religion, and what my goals were; I shared with him my purpose - to bring peace to the world through advocacy, conflict resolution, and vulnerability. He was kind. He very well might have been an angel. But I am convinced he was real. He gave me a gift, and I still have it. A book about hope, religion, and peace. Inside the front cover he wrote “Be at peace and know that you are love”. When he left my room less than 30 mins later, I showered and got into my bed, I slept till the techs woke me to take my blood and I never saw that man again.

The next 72 hours consisted of sharing a room with an older woman who insisted on being naked 24/7 and caused plenty of problems in the ward, attending all-day therapy and coping skill development groups, trying to convince the doctors and nurses I was cured and able to leave, attempting to escape my parents worried calls, being constantly poked and prodded by nursing staff, commiserating with other patients (most of whom were much older than me), and coloring in mandalas and calling it “art therapy”.

During this stay, the psychiatrist kept my diagnosis of depression and anxiety and added “You need to watch out for Bipolar”. He immediately started me on Abilify, an antipsychotic, and after 3 days was convinced the Abilify helped enough to discharge me. I went straight to the pharmacy after my stay and found the medication was $116/ pill. The drug was new, did not have a generic at the time, and I could not afford that, so I discontinued the use of the medication. 

By this time, I am deeply concerning my parents and they have bought me a one way flight to South Florida for the summer after my sophomore year. I was planning on working at Boston College for the summer and spending my entire junior year abroad in the Philippines and Vietnam, but the international travel was not brought to fruition. My parents were hurt by my secrecy, terrified, and looking to help alleviate some of my suffering. They helped me to get to a psychiatrist that might be able to help with the medication situation, and he did. I was put on Zyrexa, an antipsychotic, and the next day the sun came out. I stayed on the medication for over 4 years, but it caused grueling side effects including excessive sleeping, sedation, mixed mood episodes, and extreme weight gain to name a few.

After I was institutionalized, I told myself that I would try whatever I could to avoid the trauma, the expense, and the repetition of my experience in the ward. I felt that while I was held there, I was a prisoner, I had no rights, I had no resources, and I had a one person support system. I never wanted to go back.

Now, I am in very different shoes. I have knowledge and information. I have an entire degree dedicated to better understanding mental health and the system, I have years of experience working clinically in the field, and I have an incredible support system. I am currently seeking treatment to titrate off all unnecessary medications, to stabilize my mental and physical health, and to work intensively with clinicians on sustainable coping mechanisms. This is not like before. 

Today I spent most of the day crying and wondering how I could possibly face being stripped of my agency and belongings again, being isolated from my supports again, and being forced to take medications without consent again. The answer that I found in my tears is that I don’t have to face that again. This new situation of seeking residential treatment is dredging up emotions and memories from my experience 5 years ago; but this is different. I am afraid, and I am allowing myself the grace to feel that fear and tend to it. As I care for myself I am also caring for my younger self, my self at 19, and at any other age when I felt alone, afraid, and out of options. Once I have done my tending, I am able to open my eyes and see that in the here and now I am surrounded by support, I am brave, and I am patient with my options. 

I am surrounded by love. I am love. I am at peace.

Dichotomy

What began as a mere practicum/internship requirement for my MPH program, quickly escalated into something much more. I ventured out to Washington DC on June 22 – with pre-purchased flight tickets back to Rochester MN on Aug 13. I was going to intern at the office of the national coordinator for health information technology and help improve the interoperability of prescription data through rulemaking – notably the 21st century cures act. Within 2 weeks of being there, something clicked inside of me and I quickly realized that the ONC aligns exceptionally well with my lifetime goals. Moreover, at a time when I was contemplating my move to LA near the end of august, which mind you – I had planned for almost a year now, was now constantly at the back of my mind. Saying that I fell in love with the city is probably an overstatement, but it wouldn’t be entirely off. I absolutely loved the metro – and surprisingly – the commute. In Rochester, I lived about a mile from work and the grocery store was pretty much in my backyard. But something about walking to the metro, taking it for 10 minutes, and walking to work passing all these federal buildings (I worked 10 minutes from the capitol), was really fun and exciting. Maybe it was because I’m accustomed to driving and I’ve always wanted to experience commuting to work on the metro. I also really enjoyed the change. After 2 weeks of being in DC, I got into my routines. More out of necessity than anything because I was trying to balance a lot of things at once, I became accustomed to quickly shifting between internship, work, and school, incorporated gym 2-3/week, and went into a new 6-day meal-prep diet that was healthy, efficient, and tasty. So, why am I writing this post today? Because now I’m faced with a difficult decision – more specifically, a dichotomy of choices.

Moving to DC vs. LA

While LA aligned well with my lifetime goals of training the next generation of informaticists, the experience at ONC made me realize that I can have an immediate and direct impact on improving interoperability of information, reducing clinician burnout, and improving usability of technology. Moreover, there actually is, surprisingly, no pharmacy representation at the ONC and I think there needs to be. It’s obvious to those of us in pharmacy that advocacy and representation is abysmal within our profession and in comparison to other healthcare professionals, it’s rather embarrassing. I think that needs to change and I think my internship at the ONC has opened up an opportunity to do just that.  Further, I’d like to help create a pharmacy pipeline into the ONC so that our profession has some representation and we can help inform public policy. In light of all that, I don’t know if the move to DC would be permanent and LA could still happen in the future. What’s also nice about DC is that it sets me up to be closer to family and opens the door to make it easier to move back to Florida if I wanted to.  

Federal Government vs. Social Media

Similar to the social media path with LA, the experience at the ONC exposed me to the inner workings of the federal government. While the impact of social media is high, the impact of being in DC working directly with the federal government and ALSO doing social media, I think, is even more powerful and impactful than capitalizing on YouTube alone.

Career vs. Family

The thing about DC and federal government is that it presents another fork in the road: career vs. family. I frequently talk about how I’m trying to refocus on family, but staying in DC isn’t necessarily the best idea as I’m actually adding to my workload (i.e. internship). At this point, I think my thought is that I’ll go full steam ahead until May 2020 as I’m already hustling through work, school, and YouTube – might as well go 110% into another opportunity until I graduate in May 2020 when all of it will end. I imagine I’ll do a complete 180 to focus on my family, friends, and relationships after that. In the interim, I’ll still make sure I prioritize my calendar towards any family functions so I don’t miss those special moments in life.

ONC vs. CDC

For those of you who have followed me in my journey, you would know that going to the CDC has been a long-term goal of mine for quite some time. It probably started in 2012 when I became interested in infectious diseases through my antimicrobial stewardship rotation. Though, as I progressed through my MPH program, I’ve grown to expand my interest to beyond infectious diseases and look into the broader picture of population health. While I certainly don’t have a definitive answer right now, it does present another choice that may occur later down the road – am I more interested in harmonizing our nation’s health information technology infrastructure? Or am I, perhaps, more intrigued by the broader public health initiatives, especially infectious diseases, at the CDC. With that said, federal agencies do collaborate quite frequently and there is certainly a lot of collaboration between the CDC and ONC. One example is the CDC’s antimicrobial usage and resistance module and the ONC’s incorporation of it as a certification criteria in their certified electronic health record technology program.  

All In

All in all, at a time when I would have thought there would be more certainty in my life, I seem to have attracted and accumulated quite the opposite. But you know what? I’m okay with that. As my friend Ryan Haumschild said back in the day, “it’s when you are uncomfortable that you grow the most”. So as of 2 days ago, I made the decision to move to DC instead of LA. This is my why and I’m going all in.

Chicago - Part 1 - 11 July

Before starting my Chicago commentary, I said I would discuss the difficulty of identifying the birds we have seen over here.  Apart from the difficulty in seeing them well enough to use an app to identify them, the apps themselves are pretty poor.  The best one (Merlin) needs to be online to operate – not easy when internet access is as problematical as it is for us.  I downloaded several other apps from home, but they are very poor.  If you know the name of the species you are trying to identify, they will usually present you with a single (sometimes 2 or 3) photo of the bird – usually not the aspect of the bird you saw so they are not very helpful – especially when I almost never know the species name anyway. At best, they might confirm my suspicion of what the bird might be and provide a link to the page in Wikipedia for more information, but they are pretty useless for identifying the species from a description or from photos from a different angle to the one/s displayed. Maybe there are purchasable apps that are more useful, but I have failed to identify quite a few birds, even using Merlin and even when I have photos to assist the ID.  The second best one I have includes many species that are not even found in the US – but excludes some that definitely are!  Frustrating to say the least – but I have managed to identify 27 species so far.  It is difficult though.  As an example, I had quite a good view of an all-white spoonbill flying near us in Chicago – but all the literature indicates that there is only one species of spoonbill in the US and Canada and it is mainly red and only exists in Florida more than 2000 km away.  I reckon I know what I saw, but the experts say I couldn’t have seen it.  And we have seen plenty of Common Starlings – even have good photos of them – but the apps say they don’t exist in the US (although Wikipedia certainly says they do!!!)

Back to our adventures……..

Our first day in Chicago and we ordered brekky from room service – 2 scrambled eggs and toast that we intended to share before we went out, possibly to supplement the hotel fare out on the street.  The eggs must have been laid by an ostrich – and then there were 3 big rashers of bacon, three slices of toast, a mess of roast potatoes and strawberries.  We both ate all we could manage and left the rest for the homeless – an extraordinary breakfast and we are glad we decided to share rather than order one each!!!

We walked the few blocks to the Rookery where we were to join the Frank Lloyd Wright architectural tour.  The Rookery is a wonderful building with a colourful history and we started with a mini-tour of the lower floors before boarding a coach to take us to the Unitarian Universalists Unity Temple.

(One version of the way the Rookery got its name is from the crows that inhabited the area after the great fire that destroyed almost all the city in 1871, but the other version sounds more plausible to me – it was the temporary seat of municipal power right after the fire and everyone got rooked by the Mayor and Councillors of the time.  It seems that Al Capone was one of the minor criminal figures in Chicago’s history and we heard numerous stories of gross political and financial corruption from inception until today!  The only improvement over time seems to have been development of a more sophisticated criminal element today – they hardly ever use machine guns to accumulate their wealth and power today.  A hundred-odd years ago, most powerful people had their own cadre of enforcers and hitmen to keep the citizenry’s collective pocket open.

Our guide, Will, was very knowledgeable and happily answered our questions at length, often in an entertaining way, setting a lot of his commentary in its historic and social setting – making it more understandable in its context.  We went to a restaurant for our pre-ordered lunch and I thought it was delish.  I am not a great beer drinker, but seem to have been perpetually thirsty since leaving home so have tried quite a few different ones over here: nothing that really grabs me, but most are OK - other than the very sweet ones.

We then went on a wonderful ramble through allegedly the only winding street in Chicago to Wright’s studio and home for some years.  The house itself was quite interesting, but I enjoyed the stroll past the shacks of the rich and famous (then and now) en route to the destination.  Despite it being Chicago, I got an impression of the southern states – not quite plantation style, but I saw a lot of very similar homes in the Garden District in New Orleans years ago.

After lunch, we were driven quite a way, including along the foreshore of Lake Michigan (one of the Great Lakes we heard about in school) to a Prairie style house, the epitome of Wright’s design in that style. The scale of these places needs to be seen to be understood, but Will brought them alive for us, if still a little Fairylandish for those of us who will never have the billions to burn on the lifestyle inherent in such outlandish and extravagant designs.  There were many interesting comments about how various features led you into particular feelings or created specific environments but I frequently wondered (not aloud!) whether they were design features or architectural/tour guide wet dreams or perhaps simply recent interpretations of what might have (or might not have) been in the mind of the architect at the time he or she was doodling on the way to a design.  Was the low ceiling designed to create an intimate family dining environment – or did such an environment arise because the mezzanine requirements resulted in a low ceiling.  Not a good example, but quite a few times, I wondered which was cause and which effect, perhaps what was originally intended and what was just interpreted after the event. Was history being created at the time or did events or usage at the time create the history.  OK, OK, maybe I am a cynic, but it is sometimes easier to ascribe significance to a feature or occurrence after the event than to create something consciously to cause the condition or event.

Irrespective of the debate, it was a really interesting and provocative tour and we ended up back at the Rookery for a final, somewhat parsimonious, glass of bubbly before trekking the few blocks home.  On the way, we back-tracked to a pharmacy to buy some pills.  Somehow, I managed to come away without the most important of my meds, despite getting an extra prescription and filling it before leaving home to avoid just this situation.  Fortunately, I was able to buy an acceptable equivalent.  Otherwise, I would have been having a very miserable couple of months feeling sick almost all the time.

We bought a pizza (and a couple of bottles of good Aussie wine) on the way to the hotel so we survived the night without serious hunger and thirst.  It was a good day, if tiring, and we both slept pretty well.

Saint Leo University Ready to Welcome 700 New Students

Move-in Day Set for Aug. 16, Classes Begin Aug. 21

Saint Leo University will welcome close to 700 first-year students as they officially move in to their residence halls on Thursday, August 16. Classes begin on Tuesday, August 21. Faculty and staff, as well as a new university president, will greet students and help families move them into their new home away from home. Move-in day for first-year students begins at 8 a.m., and students may move in until 2 p.m., August 16, at University Campus, 33701 State Road 52, St. Leo, FL 33574. Welcome to the pride A reception will take place from 2 to 3 p.m., August 16, in the Marion Bowman Activities Center gym. Students and their families will have the opportunity to meet with faculty and staff from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Donald R. Tapia College of Business; and the College of Education and Social Services as well as support services including Counseling Services, Health Services; Military Affairs and Veterans Services; Campus Security and Safety; and The Center for Academic Vision and Excellence (the CAVE). The new Lions will be welcomed by Dr. Jeffrey D. Senese, university president, and Dr. Mary Spoto, vice president of Academic Affairs, at 3 p.m. The deans will explain the academic programs and Student Government Union President Derick McIntosh will greet the students. At 3:45 p.m., cue the tears (or maybe jubilation) as parents and families say goodbye and depart. Feeling the Lion spirit A mini pep rally takes place at 4 p.m., August 16, and New York Times bestselling author Harlan Cohen will discuss college life. Cohen help students “get comfortable with the uncomfortable” and navigate all the big changes ahead. About the Class of 2022 The Class of 2022 is represented by students from 37 states as well as 35 countries. The most popular academic program among incoming students is the Bachelor of Science degree in biology with an emphasis on biomedical and health services. Rounding out the top majors are criminal justice; business; sport business; marketing; psychology; computer science-information assurance; and elementary education. Many incoming students remain undecided and have not declared a major. More than 50 new students were admitted to the Honors Program, which offers challenging seminar courses and research opportunities. Special programs Orientation for international and Honors Program students as well as Emerging Mathematics and Computer Science (EMACS) scholars will take place August 14-16. Incoming biology students are introduced to their challenging program during Bio Boot Camp that will be held Saturday, August 11, through Thursday, August 16. “Students often find that the study habits that worked for them in high school are not sufficient to realize the high grades they are aiming for in college level biology coursework,” said Dr. Laura Altfield, associate professor of biology. “In addition, many of our students have dreams of attending medical school, graduate school, law school, pharmacy school, and other professional programs.” Bio Boot Camp offers a pre-semester primer geared at helping new students better adapt to the demands of undergraduate learning, and guiding them to success. Students are invited to join in the musical fun. The Office of Student Activities will greet new and returning Lions with two weeks’ worth of events during Weeks of Welcome. On the first day of classes, Tuesday, August 21, Student Activities will host a welcome back event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., near the Student Community Center. Student may get shirts spray painted, take first-day-of-school photos, and enjoy smoothies and ice pops. There will be events hosted by various campus groups throughout the first week. The Campus Activities Board will host its popular CAB bingo on Thursday, August 23, in the gymnasium and the back to school bash takes place on Friday, August 24. There will be a freestyle comedy show, the Blizzard of Bucks Game Show, and more during the second week. Giving back Incoming students will have the opportunity to participate in community service from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, August 20, on The Green by the Student Activities Building. WELCOME TO ORANGEVILLE

"When you grow up, what do you want to be?"

"I want to lead a city like in the movie! But I wouldn't be a greedy mayor, I will be a great one!"

A visit to a neighboring farm not far from his city showed Sho that he could make his own city outside the game he played before bed. He could create an actual town, a real functioning city with people living inside it and himself as the mayor. He always thought he was destined for something bigger than his current job anyway. Maybe this was his calling, to finally put his dream into realization.

In two years, Sho Babels managed to secure land and established his city: Orangeville. It was relatively small, focusing on farming like the way he always dreamed of, but it had everything he needed to life. Located in Florida, it wasn't weird for his city to be focusing on farming, especially on various kinds of Orange, just as Florida was known for.

A city without its citizen would be like a human without a soul; it wouldn't be alive. Even Los Angeles wouldn't survive without all the celebrities bringing in traffic to the city. Sho knew it enough. He knew that his new city wouldn't be able to last a year if he only depended on less than a hundred farmers he recruited from all over the state. He needed citizens to bring his city to life, sell daily necessities, open small sweet shops downtown, or even manage a small flower shop and pharmacy.

A big question popped into his mind: "Who would want to move to a small city?"

It wasn't until he saw Modern Times—a Charlie Chaplin movie about how their job enslaved humans and utterly helpless in front of the machine they created—that Sho got an idea. It might be hard to market his city to other farmers in the neighboring cities, as they already have a comfortable farm with the system that worked since their grandparents' era. The thought of his newly built city might not be appealing to them.

However, Sho knew that for those who were tired of the city life—from the traffic jam, unpaid overtime, high living cost, and all the buzz—his city would be perfect for them. Orangeville would be an ideal getaway for those who had enough of the busy life and want to settle down in somewhere less stressful, where they didn't have to think about the office papers waiting for them on the next day. He could turn Orangeville into their dream heaven and keep his city running.

He took his chance, building housings for small families and schools for their children. Then he started to market it to big cities, hoping to catch some interested souls who wanted to change their lives with his tagline:

come and join us, in a life where you don't have to worry about anything but oranges and happiness.

HOW TO PLAY

You will be selling 5 different types of oranges: Clementine, Mandarin, Tangerine, Bergamot, and Navel.

Each farmer will get 10 selling tickets that can be used to sell through 4 rounds of game.

Before each round, you will submit the number of tickets that you want to use and which orange you will be selling for that round. After everyone submits their choice, we will reveal the choices to all players and begin the game.

You will then have to quote the price for each orange from $100 to $500, only in the increment of $100.

At the end of each round, the final selling price will be revealed to all participants. The farmers that offer the lowest price will take all of the earning. Calculation of the earning of each fruit will be final price times number of farmers of that fruit divided by number of farmers with lowest offer. We will also reveal the earnings of all farmers.

Each farmer also has one SECRET coupon. SECRET can only be used for one fruit for the whole game. When you use SECRET, price and total earning of sellers on that said orange won't be revealed.

Simultaneously, you will also try to hide your stock of oranges through a game of Hide and Seek. The dangerous spots and the cost for each round will be determined before game and revealed at the end. Complete mechanism will be informed during Story.

At the end of the game, we will reveal the earnings of all farmers.

EXAMPLE

Round 1  Tangerine; Shō sells at $500, Moon sells at $500, Eloise sells at $500. Therefore, lowest offer is $5. Earning calculation: $500 (lowest offer) x 3 (total farmers in Tangerine) : 3 (total farmers that offer $500) = $500. Total earning in Round 1: Shō = $500, Moon = $500, Eloise = $500. All sellers get the earning since all farmers offer $500.

Round 2 Clementine; Shō sells at $500, Moon sells at $200, Eloise sells at $400. Therefore, lowest offer is $200. Earning calculation: $200 (lowest offer) x 3 (total farmers in Clementine) : 1 (total farmer that offers $200) = $600. Total earning in Round 2: Shō = $0, Moon = $600, Eloise = $0. Only Moon gets the earning since only him offers $200.

Round 3  Mandarin; Shō sells at $300, Moon sells at $400, Eloise sells at $300. Therefore, lowest offer is $300. Earning calculation: $300 (lowest offer) x 3 (total farmers in Mandarin) : 2 (total farmers that offer $300) = $450. Total earning in Round 3: Shō: $450, Moon = $0, Eloise $450. Only Shō and Eloise get the earning since only them offer $300.

RULES

You are allowed to use the 10 selling tickets in any orange and any round of your choice, including spending multiple tickets on the same types of orange for all rounds or in one round. Think strategically.

You are allowed to not participate in a round. If you wish to do this, you still need to report this to the base. However, by the end of the game, you must finish all tickets. If you fail to do this, there will be punishment waiting.

If you go  AFK during a round, we will automatically use 2 of your tickets in a random orange with $500 quotation.

The process of submitting your choice of orange, price quotation, and SECRET usage will be done privately through Direct Message with the base.

Total earning for each round will be rounded up to the nearest round number. There will be no decimal in earnings.

Sharing screenshots and/or images of clues and/or answers is strictly prohibitied. There will be heavy repercusion for this.

This Story requires a lot of time commitment and we need you to be on standby during games. Please be aware of this and make sure you are capable of fulfilling the said commitment before signing up.
