the cruel cub petting industry - south africa’s shame
The so-called ‘Simba effect,’ named for a popular character from The Lion King, is a term used to describe the tourist pastime of holding or petting lion cubs while taking selfies and videos to post on social media.
Currently, there are likely more lions in captivity (breeding farms, safari parks, zoos) than living freely in the wild.
Most cubs are under 3 months old - some are only days old with their eyes still shut.
In this industry, cubs on display are frequently separated from their mothers and forced to interact beyond the species’ normal waking hours.
Once grown to adulthood, their lives become part of a larger cycle of harm including the canned hunting industry, the exotic pet trade, and the black market for wildlife parts. While these activities are well-known, the exploitation of cubs at tourist attractions is less well understood.
Unsuspecting animal lovers, through supporting the petting industry are contributing to the decimation of the lion population.
It is estimated that lions are bred on some 300 farms for trophy hunting purposes in South Africa, and cub-petting is an integral part of this economy.
Instead of visiting a cub petting facility, please support a true big cat sanctuary that is a facility that does not breed, trade or offer interactions, but instead provides a forever home to animals that cannot be returned to the wild.

Oooo, forget Japan for my 40th birthday, I've been 3 times already if I'm gonna spend thousands of pounds on a holiday it should be somewhere I've never been before.
I'm looking at a 10 day African Safari 😆.
My 20th I spent hiking in the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland.
My 30th I spent in a helicopter over Queenstown in New Zealand.
I'd love to say I spent my 40th staring at a wild lion in Krugar National Park in South Africa!!!
More research to do.

Chasing giraffes and zebras in South Africa! Spotting giraffes in their natural habitat is always the highlight of any safari for me. I absolutely love animals with spots or stripes, so this was a dream come true. While some people rushed to look for the Big Five, I went after giraffes and zebras, LOL.
As you may have seen from my IG stories, I went on a safari in South Africa, and it was awesome. Can't wait to share more from this unforgettable adventure!
I captured this photo in Marakele National Park, Thabazimbi, our first stop. During our visit, we spent a few days at the Marataba Mountain Lodge, featuring only five suites and offering a breathtaking view of the nearby mountains. Situated in a privately managed area within Marakele National Park, the lodge is approximately a 3-hour and 30-minute drive from Johannesburg.

Back to Uganda
25-26th February 2023
Leaving the house at 2.45 a.m. and arriving in our Entebbe guesthouse at 11.30 p.m. made for quite a long day. But all the documents were present and correct and our baggage came with us all the way to Uganda, unlike last year when we had quite a challenging start.
Some of you will be familiar with the necessities that need to be obtained - visas are much easier because you can do most of it on line. Currency – Millions of Uganda shillings needed to pay for our transport and fuel apart from anything else, because you can’t rely on paying by card on this kind of safari.
Then it’s worth changing the SIM cards on our mobiles to make communications slicker within Uganda. That process is quite fun, as once in the relevant shop you have a session with several different people (the equivalent to “Cashier number 3 please”) before the ceremonial insertion of your Uganda card and then working out where to stash your removed very small UK SIM card for safekeeping.
After a quick sortie into the local supermarket for safari sundries – a surprisingly wide variety of goods for sale – we had a quick lunch and headed south to Nkima Forest Lodge. The weeks preceding our departure had been quite complicated and tiring, and Ewan decided we should begin the safari with a day off.
As we came to the lodge the owner was sorting out “a little water problem” – there was none. Dry weather meant the water table had dropped, affecting the supply. And the sun had not been shining so the water was not being heated!
But we were glad to arrive, and the water problem was duly sorted. We’ve been especially pleased to find we had some very congenial fellow guests: four young civil servants from UK.
I don’t know your views on civil servants but having worked in government service in both UK and Africa, we rather approve of them and recognise their importance. After all, they are the ones who try to give good information and advice to government ministers and a great deal depends on that.
The group currently at Nkima are working in conflict resolution, humanitarian relief aid, and secret projects they couldn’t name…..all fascinating and we found them irresistibly interesting and admirable. How refreshing.
Nkima is an eco-lodge, powered by the sun.
Solar lights recharging.
Nkima lodge is famous especially for the chance to see shoebill storks, very rare, in the swamps around Lake Victoria. And that’s just what we did this morning, travelling in a small boat along the channels through the reeds, water lilies and hyacinths, with a marvellous variety of birds along the way.
Wonderful to see so many malachite kingfishers, one of our very favourites, and exquisitely beautiful.
Pied Kingfisher and a Malachite King fisher
And finally, we did indeed meet a shoebill stork, huge and impressive with quite a presence. He apparently stays in one place for 3-4 hours, catching a very occasional lungfish for a snack. We can see why people get excited about such a sighting. We were delighted later to see one on the wing, soaring, as our guide announced, “up to the clouds”.
Shoebills: notes for enthusiasts. You don’t have to read this bit, but some of the info we’ve found is so fascinating we thought we’d give you the chance to share in it.
Shoebills: “perhaps the most eagerly sought of all African birds” by anyone with even the slightest interest in birds.
Two things combine to give the shoebill its striking appearance
It’s huge! An adult might stand more than 5 feet (150cm) tall. Seeing ours standing in the swamp it could easily have been a human.
Its clog-shaped hook-tipped bill, 20cm wide and almost as long, the largest of all living bird species. Perhaps not surprising that it's part of the pelican family. The bill is held in a permanent Cheshire cat smile, and the bird can look both sinister and inane. One of our young civil servants was eyeballed by a shoebill in the swamp yesterday and wondered if it was going to attack, but it just kept on smiling.
More fun facts about shoebills
Shoebills live for ages in bird terms – up to 50 years. They are faithful partners for life, male and female building a grassy nest up to 3m wide on a floating island.
Parents share incubation duties. In hot weather they fill their beaks with water and spray the eggs to keep them cool. How cool is that? Eggs hatch after a month, and the dedicated parents continue to feed them for another two.
The adult birds spend a lot of time standing around semi-frozen for several hours before suddenly plunging with great drama, speed and power to make a successful kill of a favourite lungfish, a tasty toad, or perhaps a baby crocodile.
Shoebills are remarkable birds of distinctive appearance and with fascinating characteristics. Not surprisingly they come with a number of myths, legends and superstitions, and remain under threat as their habitats are being destroyed
Here in the Mabamba swamp in Uganda it really pays the local community to protect the environment and the special shoebills. Tourists, particularly birding enthusiasts but not only them, pay local people significant sums for the privilege of a boat ride through the swamp with a knowledgeable guide and a reasonable chance of seeing a shoebill.
We had a wonderful morning, and along with so many brilliant birds almost within touching distance, seeing the shoebill both on land and in the air was a precious privilege. We felt much restored.

2.Mount Mulanje
Located 65 km east of Blantyre, Mount Mulanje or Mulanje Massif rises sharply from the plains of Chizardzulu and is one of the most preferred places for hiking in Malawi. One can also spend some time in the tea-growing district nearby with the same name, Mulanje. This mountain with an altitude of 3000 m is popularly called “island in the sky” by the locals. You will notice what a suitable name it is when you see the mountain enclosed in a smoke-like haze on a misty day.
Just like Nkhoma Mountain, Massif is popular among adventure lovers for hiking and climbing. The Malawi Mountain Club and Forestry Department maintains several mountain huts scattered around the mountain. Hikers can choose from a large number of trails depending on the length of stay and what summits they want to reach. People who do not want to hike can simply visit the Mulanje Forest Reserve and spend some time exploring the plant and animal species.

The restoration includes infrastructure development, wildlife stocking, scientific monitoring function, and law enforcement.

You can find good accommodation facilities in this town and enjoy some lake activities during your stay.

Whether you're exploring the African savannas or white sand beaches on solo trips, couple vacations or group tours prioritizing your health is crucial for an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
25 Good Travel Lifestyle Habits on Safaris
Here are 25 tips to help you stay healthy and vibrant during your guided wildlife safari adventures. 1. Plan Ahead: Before embarking on your safari tour, take the time to research the destination, climate, and wildlife you'll encounter. This will help you prepare mentally and physically for the journey ahead. 2. Stay Hydrated: Hydration is key, especially in hot and humid environments. To avoid dehydration, make sure to keep a refillable water container handy and stay hydrated by consuming fluids regularly throughout the day. This means carrying a reusable water bottle and maintaining adequate fluid intake to maintain optimal hydration levels and support overall health. 3. Pack Healthy Snacks: Avoid relying on unhealthy snacks available during travel. Pack nutritious snacks such as nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and granola bars to keep energy levels up between meals. 4. Opt for Balanced Meals: Choose balanced meals that include a combination of lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Many safari lodges offer nutritious meal options tailored to travelers' dietary needs. 5. Practice Safe Eating Habits: Be cautious of consuming raw or undercooked foods, especially meats and seafood. Stick to well-cooked meals to avoid foodborne illnesses. 6. Protect Against Insect Bites: Insect repellent and appropriate clothing can help protect you from mosquito bites and insect-borne diseases. Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. 7. Apply Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays by applying sunscreen. Remember to regularly put on sunscreen, especially after swimming or sweating, to ensure continued protection from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied periodically, particularly after activities that may reduce its effectiveness, such as swimming or sweating, to maintain its efficacy in shielding the skin from sun damage. 8. Wear Protective Gear: When participating in activities such as hiking or safari drives, wear appropriate footwear, hats, and sunglasses to shield yourself from potential hazards and sun exposure. 9. Practice Safe Wildlife Viewing: Respect wildlife and maintain a safe distance to avoid disturbing their natural behaviors. Follow your guide's instructions and never attempt to approach or touch wild animals. 10. Stay Active: Even during guided tours, find opportunities to stay active by going for nature walks, participating in guided hikes, or engaging in wildlife photography sessions. 11. Stretch Regularly: Long hours of travel and safari drives can take a toll on your body. Incorporate stretching exercises into your daily routine to relieve tension and improve flexibility. 12. Get Sufficient Rest: Prioritize quality sleep to allow your body to rest and recover from daily activities. Choose accommodations that offer comfortable bedding and minimize noise disturbances. 13. Practice Good Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene practices by washing your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom. 14. Pack a First Aid Kit: Prepare for minor injuries and illnesses by packing a basic first aid kit containing bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary medications. 15. Stay Mindful of Altitude: If traveling to high-altitude destinations, acclimate gradually to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities until your body adjusts to the altitude. 16. Monitor Weather Conditions: Stay informed about weather forecasts and prepare accordingly for changes in weather conditions. Prepare suitable attire and equipment to ensure your comfort and safety. This means selecting clothing and gear that is suitable for the conditions you'll encounter, minimizing risks and maximizing enjoyment during your activities. 17. Stay Connected: Inform friends or family members about your travel plans and maintain communication whenever possible, especially if venturing into remote areas with limited connectivity. 18. Respect Local Customs and Traditions: Familiarize yourself with the customs and traditions of the local communities you'll encounter during your safari tour. Show respect for their culture and traditions at all times. 19. Limit Alcohol Consumption: While it may be tempting to indulge in alcoholic beverages, especially during social gatherings, moderation is key. Excessive alcohol consumption can impair judgment and affect your overall well-being. 20. Practice Environmental Conservation: Leave no trace behind and minimize your environmental impact by following eco-friendly practices such as proper waste disposal and respecting wildlife habitats. 21. Stay Flexible: Be prepared for unexpected changes in itineraries or plans due to weather conditions, wildlife sightings, or other factors. Maintain a flexible attitude and embrace the adventure. 22. Stay Informed About Health Risks: Stay informed about potential health risks specific to the regions you'll be visiting, such as malaria or other infectious diseases. Before embarking on a journey, it's essential to seek guidance from a healthcare provider and ensure appropriate safety measures are taken. This helps safeguard your health and well-being during travel by addressing any potential medical concerns and minimizing risks. 23. Focus on the beauty of nature and the incredible wildlife encounters you'll have along the way. 24.
