Kpop Idols in BLs 

Ironically the first idol to appeal in a Korean BL role so far as I can tell is Japanese idol Terada Takuya (Cross Gene) who was ½ of the BL couple in 2015′s The Lover.

The first Korean idol to do so was Yoo Dong Kyun (Khan of ZPZG), who was in Tropical Night (2017). It v. sad.

I’m stopping now. Pretty much every new KBL has soem kinda idol in it from 2023 on. It’s actually stranger to see one without an idol now.

I did dither over THE MAN BLK legitimately counting for various reasons, but then decided Kpop-ness is not my judgement to make, and left them all in. 

Also it should be noted that Rowoon of SF9 does a killer job as a bisexual character in The King’s Affection, but that’s not BL.

MOAR? 

Takara & Amagi were both played by Jpop idols. Arata Sato is a member of IMPACTors, and Oriyama Nao of Shounen Ninja (both groups are managed by Johnny's Jr). I’m not going to track the Jpops in JBLs because challenges.

That said, 2022′s The Usual Night (Twitter account) from Japan is a 10-ep fake documentary series starring the members of Jpop group the Fantastics. It flew under everyone’s radars but apparently has a BL subplot featuring Yagi Yusei (My Beautiful Man) and Seguchi Leiya. This officially means they beat OnlyOneOf to the punch as the first inter-group BL pairing. Keito Kimura (Onoe from Candy Color Paradox) is also a member of Fantastics and in the show. Follow up question: 

Do I think any MAJOR idols will do BL? 

I think it's pretty unlikely right now.

ACE's Jun is probubly the biggest idol to have done a BL so far (at the time, pre-BL, not post). I do think the Jaehyun (NCT) possibly doing a BL thing thing was a rumor. Boy do I neither care nor want to argue about this, please don't comment on the subject. He's cute, it'd be fun, *waves hand in air* go away NCTzens.

If it's a major idol currently active it'll be a non-Korean (contract allowing) or one of those 3rd Gen out-of-contracts we are about to see a lot more of. (You better believe everyone is watching GOT7 to see what they do and how they handle it, so...)

But I think BL will still only be able to tap second tear idols even then - so VIXX not GOT7, for example. No shade on VIXX, they’re amazing, but they don’t have the same numbers in any arena, literally and figuratively. Also those from defunked and fractured groups seem to be fair game. And it’ll still be mostly the shorter idols who want to break into acting. And/or the ones old enough not to give a shit about reputation anymore. (None of this applies to Japan, attitudes are way different there.) 

The personality of the idol really plays into this too. Like I could see Ten or Yuta (NCT) being all “fuck it, I’m doing a BL” (eventually) but not Mark (GOT7) for example. 

It's unlikely any studio would allow a highly active 4th gen do a BL. And yes, I do think it's studio controls in place, they’re very careful with their stable.

You don't let a triple crown racehorse do dressage no matter how popular dressage becomes. 

That said, if the racehorse doesn’t perform well but dressage can somehow help?

Kpop group DKZ’s prior album first week’s sales? 1,482. Comeback in April 2022? 107,965.

The reason for that 100x increase? Most likely Park Jae Chan’s appearance as SongWoo in Semantic Error.

Apparently he had to convince his company to let him do it.

Park Jun Hee, also known by his stage name Jun, is a member of A.C.E. He stared in recent historical BL, Tinted With You. (Yes there’s boys kissing.) 

He’s not the first Idol to appear in a BL, but he’s certainly one of the most famous.

Meet 2Z! The Kickass Kpop Rockband

2Z is a Korean rock band currently under GoGo2020 . The group is made by 5 members: Bumjun, Hojin, Jiseob, Junghyun and Zunon. They first debuted with their EP We Tuzi : My 1st Hero. Currently they only have two EPs: We Tuzi and Nostrum which were released on 2020 and their single Let's Go For It in

 For now they do not have any official fan colors but they do have a fandom name! They call their fans From A. Cute isn’t it?      1. Bumjun 

Bumjun’s birth name is Park Bum jun. He’s the leader and drummer of the group! His birthday is on February 3,1999 an awesome Aquarius if you ask me!

     2. Hojin  

Meet our second member Hojin. He’s currently the main vocalist for the band.  His birth name is Kim Ho Jin. And he’s a Cancer! He was born on July 3, 2001.

       3.Jiseob

  Meet Jiseob! His birth name is Jung Ji Seob and he is the vocalist and guitarist of the band. He was bored on November 11, 2001! 

     4.  Junghyun

Meet the maknae! Junghyun or Lee Jung Hyun being his birth name. He is the maknae, vocalist and bassist of the mand. Our little maknae is a taurus! He was born on May 20. 2002  

5. Zunon

And last but not least, we have our mysterious new member Zunon. Zunon, was presented in the group on August 1, 2020 with their digital single Let Go For it. For now there's not much information about this member but we currently know he is the pianist of the group. Welcome, Zunon! Hopefully, we will know and see more of you soon!

Dec 2021 Wk 2

Ongoing Series - Thai

Bad Buddy (YouTube) Ep 7 - Secret boyfriends subverted the seme/uke dynamic using BL tropes (YES!), we had a possible GL really take off and general good times. I’m live blogging it here.

Paint with Love (Gaga) Ep 3 - I liked this better than the previous two, both characters seemed less abrasive plus I always appreciate a good makeover montage. Got tropes like baby is a floppy drunk and the dreaded sponge bath but executed in a very grown up way, (because this is a very grown up BL, and I’m still not sure how I feel about that). 

Loveless Society Ep 3 - hadn’t dropped by midday Friday so I’ll check tomorrow. I’m not fussed. 

Baker Boys (YouTube) Ep 5-6 (not a BL) - I’ve basically given up on this one. I’ll probably keep watching it but with no effort to stay current or report on it here. 

Love With Benefits Ep 5 fin - and that’s apparently the end. Okay? Anyway, got unexpectedly higher heat than I thought it would, which was nice, but I was still left with a terrible case of second lead syndrome (damn you, Best). This is why I loathe love triangles. 5/10 RECOMMENDED only if you have nothing better to do and don’t mind love triangles. 

Between Us (YouTube) special 5 - I can’t even with these two, they are actually trying to kill us with cute. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

My Type (Taiwan indie - hard to find) Ep 7 - lost my lead on this one so now I’m falling behind. 

Kieta Hatsukoi AKA My Love Mix Up (Japan - Viki/Netflix) Ep 9 - as was foretold the ep 9 that dropped and is floating around grey sites is a mix of recap + BTS footage. No one knows if there will be two more episodes or if this really was an actually ep 9, and the next ep will be billed and label as ep 10 and therefore our last one. But the latter seems more likely. There’s 2 more. 

Utsukushii Kare AKA My Beautiful Man (Japan - Gaga) Ep 4 - the college years begin. And how much do I love this profoundly warped little show? SO MUCH. Starting us off with just one of those dinner theater things where you accidentally introduce your new boyfriend to his semi-abusive ex who promptly tries to establish dominance and steal him back... in front of your brother. Good stuff. (Honestly, how many subby boys who don't like nice guys have I meet over the years? SO MANY.  Practically and archetype of the kink scene.) I don’t even have 2nd lead syndrome with this one, because we know Koyama doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell, because the boy likes hell far too much to even think about the snowball. You know what I like best about this show? No one but Japan could have made this. It’s just so... THEM. 

Mr Cinderella (Vietnam - YouTube maybe restricted) Ep 2 - it’s really very good, I love that the Khoa, the doctor character, is openly gay and I love the sulky tsundere with reason bad boy. The doctor flirting him into complete confusion is kinda adorable. Definitely the best BL out of Vietnam so far. ALSO cutest most poetic miss caption ever...

Japanese BL Kieta Hatsukoi has rebooted its run on Viki (for most international audiences), so you can now watch it legally there as My Love Mix-Up! It’s fully eng subbed through Episode 8.

Thai BL Secret Crush on You (previously known as Stalker the series) Teaser trailer here. Starts Feb 11on Ch3Thailand and IDOLFACTORY’s YouTube channel international.

Another KBL announced: Love in Spring from WATCHA (Light On Me) a web drama that’s already started filming. Adaptation is based on the webtoon Spring of Crush by Noh Myung Hee.

Gossip

Vietnamese BL production house, AB Studios released its 2022 line up. Letters = melodramatic and dark (teaser), Melody In Me = classic uni-style BL from a country that’s never done it before, music and baking club, 2 soft boi pairing, (teaser - July 2022), Rin = unknown (Winter 2022).

New Chinese (supposedly) BL In Your Heart. Two boys kissing in the snow on the poster which means... THEY GONNA DIE! Eh, ya know how it goes. China does not allow out gays to end happily in a BL. Not anymore. Imma watch it, of course. But don’t you dare say you’ve not been warned.
