A few weeks after Jack is assigned to overwatch Mac, his bomb nerd comes under fire.

"Time" (or "times") turned up 17 times in Lost Causes, my Army Days 2x12 Mac + Jack missing scene story. Here's the most "time"-heavy section:

By the time they reach their barrack, everyone else is heading for the mess hall. Mac hightails it to the showers as soon as he can gather up spare clothing, while Jack sits heavily on his bunk, staring at his boots instead of removing them. 

He knows what’s going on. It’s the nasty aftereffect of adrenaline and a too-close call mixing themselves up in the back of his head, where he stuffs away all the other things he doesn’t like to think much about. The other close calls that, for whatever reason, turned out very differently than this afternoon. The times he hadn’t been in position to see what was coming before it came. The times he had missed something. The times he wasn’t fast enough. Or when he made a judgment call, like Mac did this afternoon, and it turned out to be the wrong one. Like that last op in the CIA, the one that almost broke him.

He’s still sitting there when Mac gets back from the showers, freshly re-dressed, his hair disheveled and dripping, stuck together into a thousand little blond spikes.

This week’s word/theme is TIME. Variations include out of time, turn back time, in the nick of time, timer counting down, clock numbers, etc.

What’s your favorite cold open?

Which episode to you go back to the most?

Are there any songs that make you think of the show?

My favorite cold open isn't really a true cold open, as it transitions into the full episode after the theme song/intro plays, but it's the first few minutes of 1x13, Large Blade. The whole team badgering Jack about only bringing one zip-tie is funny enough, but then he does the high-pitched "I'm not the bad guy!" bit and it lives rent-free in my brain! (Runner-up goes to 1x7's "and a 100-meter daaaash.)

I go back to 2x12, Mac + Jack, the most, probably. There's just so much to love about that one and I love to rewatch it. If we're talking from a writing perspective, though, it's the infamous 5x5. My brain has just dissected that one and the little clues it leaves behind to the point I have a 4-part fic series I'm working on based on Jack not being dead. (Mine kinda bypasses seasons 4-5, though.)

As for songs, Live and Learn by Joe Public. It was in one of the episodes (can't remember which) and ever since, whenever I hear it, my mind automatically equates it with MacGyver.

I love these thoughts. Jack not wanting to fight hard enough to get in real trouble. Mac being filled with so very much emotion he's fighting like a demon.

But I give you this thought: what if Jack was injured?

Jack is acting high-strung, impatient, and angry. We don't know why exactly but we know that Jack is in a dark bad place and Mac says he's heard no one wants to work with him.

We don't know why. But what if Jack had it out with someone else before Mac showed up? What if he's available for assignment because he bruised a rib in a fight 2 days ago (which he would prefer to avoid mentioning, because he knows it was stupid and he should't have done it, but he's just So Done With Everything Right Now and hates everything about being back in army and just wants to go home)?

A mentally-healthy Jack has self-control and patience. But unhappy, depressed Jack who's counting down the moments until he can get the heck out of Afghanistan? He's on a hair trigger. Maybe he's out of shape, even, because he hasn't been eating and sleeping right. He's off his game for sure. Mac probably isn't the only one who's set him off.

I also had conflicted feelings about Jack and Mac duking it out when they first met but a large part of that for me was my own confusion about how Jack couldn’t just kick Mac’s ass (not that I’d want him to) or restrain him. You could argue that Jack was holding back and of course Mac is skilled in his own way but I was like…why is Jack struggling with this lol. Sorry Mac but Jack is the physical guy with an incredible amount of experience. The rest of it was that i didn’t like them hitting each other but I guess that’s obvious

Jack must have been holding back. That's the only reason Mac didn't end up with a broken jaw. (that and plot armor). Look, Mac is skilled and could probably hold is own against the average GI Joe, but Jack is Delta Force. He could have incapacitated Mac if he had wanted to.

I think Jack saw some punk kid touching his weapon and wanted to teach him a lesson. That rifle is Jack's life. It's the lives of the people under his protection. He does not take that lightly. He was going to make sure he never even thought about touching someone else's weapon but he didn't want to put him out of commission.

And Jack wasn't looking to spend his last 64 days in the stockade or get court-martialed. Plus, when he got a look at the child touching his weapon, he really couldn't just beat the kid into a pulp. (Mac looks young but have you seen a photo of 19 year old lucas?)

I'm so used to their first meeting now that I don't even know what i would have been hoping for but I do remember feeling a twinge of disappointment when I first saw the episode. And I guess this is an example of a good conflict with a good resolution. Plus the fanfic has made it infinitely better

What’s your favorite episode?

2x12 no question. I love the unlikely and wacky setup (Mac's house is now a gigantic bomb? WHAT COULD BE MORE FITTING). I love Mac's inventions, that they have to call in Charlie, all the little moments like Bozer just shrugging and going it when Mac tells him to steal the neighbor's DVD player, Matty apparently being In Charge of everything in the whole city, the way Riley takes it in stride when she has to build a thing for Mac based on a single word. But of course the very best part is the excellent way the two storylines contrast Mac and Jack's first meeting and early friendship with their reliance on each other in the "now". There can't be more than 7 or 8 minutes total of flashbacks, but every second of every one is so perfectly arranged to tell the precise story of their evolution from angry brawling to besties. Which is so obvious in the present. I could probably write an essay here but I feel like this is NOT an unusual choice of favorite so I'm probably in good company!

What’s your favorite cold open?

I answered this in the first ask I got around to answering so I'm going to go with my second favorite: 2x02, the North Korea car chase+badly timed heart-to-heart. Jack muting the line on Patti & Riley while fleeing the North Korean military so he can chastise Mac for not having his head in the game while Mac is building a fertilizer bomb in the front seat is just peak show.

Answers 1 and 7 kind of go hand in hand!

I remember seeing 2x12 Mac + Jack on a rerun station at like 3am one night, and part of why I remember it so distinctly is because it started with the recap of Sam getting shot, followed by the opener in the hospital waiting room. After that I was like 👀 "oh?"

I did catch a few episodes like that for a while, but it was only on one night a week at that late night/early morning hour, so I looked for somewhere to watch it on my own time (and in order), and well. Here I am lol.

18. Ooh that's a hard one. There's so many good options! But I'd have to say, we deserve a scene from 3x13 where Jack learns what happened and then later gives Mac a hard time about "This is why you ain't allowed to go anywhere without me." Or, a tag for 2x11 Bullet + Pen where Mac gets to talk to someone about that whole experience! Cause the poor kid was clearly Not Okay for so much of that episode, then he almost got taken out by the cartel on top of that.
