Growth: Gratitude

Thank you.

If you’re reading this, thank you. If you’re not, thank you anyway - you’re probably doing something else interesting, fun and/or cool.

One major stepping stone towards happiness, contentment and riotously burning the demons of insecurity is gratitude. I find I often get so embroiled in the little things I feel I’m missing, or that my partner’s not doing, that I start to feel pretty damn awful.

And you know what really helps? Taking a step back and just remembering all the things I have to be grateful for with this person.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this recently with regards to Sy. After my time away, and our decision to cease contact for a while, I’ve had a lot of time and space to think. And I’ve started noticing the little things I liked about us again.

It snowed recently, and while I love to cavort around, make snow angels, kick up spray, throw snowballs, M is much more pragmatic. He just keeps walking, while I go out of my way to jump in untouched crisp whiteness, leaving giants’ footprints. Sy, like me, is a playful child with the elements. We often dart around giggling together while M strides on ahead before running to catch up with him in a surprise hug.

While Sy’s words and actions recently have been hurtful, and we came to the painful realisation that our views and feelings on this relationship are very different, I’m starting to miss my playmate.

I’m slowly moving on from the sadness and hurt and starting to remember why I liked his company in the first place, before I fell for him. He’s fun. He’s silly. He’s patient and warm and kind. He plays with me and we laugh a lot. We’re the silly children when M is rushing around in a ‘serious business’ ADHD whirl.

I think I’m getting to a point now where I can talk with him again and actually have something constructive to say. Where maybe I can spend time with him and not be sad we aren’t ‘something more’. I’m grateful for his presence in my life, even if it’s been hard at points.

And on the subject of M, while I’m still struggling a great deal with jealousy and envy, I’m not so blasted by it on the daily anymore, because I have so much in this relationship to be grateful for that really, wanting what I see him have with others would be rather too much of a good thing. I love him but I am grateful for the space, too.

From now on, I count my blessings before I get overwhelmed by insecurity. I’m claiming my gratitude ground.
