“Leaders stake their ground: Johnson Brexit, Corbyn NHS.”

Well, we all know that the great British public choose Johnson and Brexit over Corbyn and the NHS.

One year on and with just 6 weeks to go there is still no Brexit deal in sight, Johnson’s "oven ready" deal proving to have been a complete and utter turkey.

But it is not all bad news for those who voted for Johnson. They knew the NHS would continue to be short-funded by a Conservative administration and they have not been disappointed: years of under-spending and under-investment in the NHS and social care by Tory administrations have been continued under Johnson.

The BBC reported on 28thApril 2020 that Johnson had " failed to buy crucial protective equipment to cope with a pandemic". Yet only three years earlier the Tory government had been warned about lack of NHS capacity to deal with a mass viral infection. This report contained four recommendations, all of which were totally ignored.

We now know the terrible human cost of choosing Brexit over the NHS: tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths.

Has Johnson learned anything from this? It would appear not. While Carrie Symonds, Johnson and Cummings squabbled and vied for power inside Number Ten, the second wave of the pandemic swept through the country, prompting this headline.

“Operations cancelled as hospitals come under pressure from Covid cases.”

We might now be less likely to die from coronavirus, but due to years of Tory under-funding and under-staffing of the NHS we are much more likely to die from other treatable diseases simply because limited NHS resources are now having to be used to combat Covid-19 Cases.
