Mt. Fuji Overlooking Suruga Bay

Location: Miho Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan Timestamp: 14:36 April 5, 2023

In this photograph, my aim was to showcase the colossal size of Mt. Fuji as she towers over a container ship sailing towards Shimizu Port through Suruga Bay.

To capture this shot, I began my journey from the Miho-no-Matsubara pine tree grove, a popular destination for tourists visiting the Miho Peninsula. I walked along the coastline towards the north for about 10 minutes until I reached an artificial breakwater that protrudes into Suruga Bay.

During low tide, this breakwater offers a safe and unobstructed view of Suruga Bay, the city of Shimizu, and Mt. Fuji. The concrete structure of the breakwater provides a secure base for use with a tripod for shots with a lower ISO and longer shutter speed.

SLEEPY HOME HARBOUR This may be the last of the little old wharves. Still active for the Scotia Mist II and Alyssa C II, two sequels to earlier sisters, long gone. Just enough room between breakwater rocks and the collapsed end to pull up side-by-side, lashed safely against the tide and other threats. Most boats fish from busier ports, where pooled resources are gathered together to hold back the forces of Fundy's tides and weather. But here's a sleepy home harbour to be proud of, short saunter from your door to the ocean. My good friend Armón Lewis did five decades that way, here in his birthplace from the 1950s till the 2000s. He's gone now, but his son Marty still sets that blue boat to sea. I stop by between the rainstorms to see if time has passed me by. It hasn't quite yet, and memories still make themselves. Date unknown. Active; focal plane 14 m (46 ft)); yellow light, 3 s on, 3 s off. 8.5 m (28 ft) round barbell-shaped fiberglass tower, colored with red and white horizontal bands. Trabas has José da Palma's photo and Google has a satellite view and a distant street view. This is the entrance range for the Rio Sado estuary, the harbor of Setúbal. The present light replaced a skeletal mast. Located on the breakwater of the fishing harbor of Setúbal. Accessible by walking the pier. Site open, tower closed. PT-384; Admiralty D2151; NGA 3564.

Japanese Government's Fisheries Agency Collaborates with Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater Anime

    The Japanese Government's Fisheries Agency (an external bureau of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) has published a new pamphlet "Rules and Manners of Recreational Fishing" featuring a newly-drawn illustration of the TV anime Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater on its cover. You can learn about the rules and manners of recreational fishing together with the anime characters in its content.

  The pamplet's PDF version can be downloaded on the official website for Fisheries Agency, and its print edition will be distributed for free at fishing-related events, workshops, and at fishing tackle stores nationwide starting in early July.

     The TV anime adaptation of Yasuyuki Kosaka's fishing-themed manga Hokago Teibo Nisshi / Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater will resume broadcasting in Japan from its first episode tonight on July 7, 2020. Its broadcast has been halted after its third episode on April 21 due to the COVID-19 ourbreak. Its fourth episode is scheduled to be aired on July 28.

Explanation: Despite the cold, a chance to view the shimmering northern lights coaxed this skygazer onto the frozen surface of Lake Superior on the west coast of the Keweenaw Peninusla and offered this nocturnal crescendo as a reward. A northern late winter night sky also plays across the panoramic composition of images made between 10pm and 1am on the night of February 28/March 1. At left, a faint band of Zodiacal light rises sharply from the horizon crossing Mars and the Pleides star cluster. Both the distant galaxy M31 and our own Milky Way shine above the greenish auroral arc. Navigational north pole star Polaris is centered above and accompanied on the right by the northern night's most recognizable asterism, the Big Dipper. Terrestrial lights include markers for two breakwaters on the the horizon near the center of the scene.
