Changes to my 27th letter

I reviewed my 27th letter and the approach I took to it was good, but I didn't like the final design components of the letter. I have decided to change it to something that played with the unique design elements of the Barlow font. As it is a clean, rounded font, not many letters have variations from other typefaces, but I did find the letter Q unique and I wanted to play with this further. I noticed that the letter Q has a different descender than other designed Q's, it looks like it has an i within it. I thought this could be an interesting concept to play with, so I created some sketches then produced a digital copy.

These images above are my final changes to my 27th letter. I have included the original form of the Q, so that you can visually observe the difference between the designs. With the upper case Q, you can see that I have extended the descender and brought it higher so it extends the x-height. I wanted it to reflect an uppercase I within the Q and that is why I have extended it further than the x-height. In the lowercase q, I removed the shoulder on the top of the q, to make it open and seem as if it is u. I created two different designs for the lowercase, as you can see one has i incorporated within the middle, same as the uppercase and the other has i included on the left side of the q's bowl. I found that the two designs which are similar are stronger to use for my final 27th letter as they have the similar feature of the i intruding through the middle of the q.

I then began thinking about how I was going to name this letter, how it would sound and where it would sit within the alphabet. I wanted to keep the similar sounds of Q within my letter, which helped me to come up with the idea of Qu- ee. The ee sound is also similar to the sound of an I, which I found was a great way to tie the two together. For thinking of a name for this letter, I tried to produce one from the sound that the letter makes. This came to me quite naturally and decided to name my letter Qui.

I prefer this design a lot more than my first attempt at creating our 27th letter. I think this design aligns with Barlow's aesthetic compared to my previous designed letter, which felt more out of place in the sense it seemed like a transition between the two letters.

I have designed my spread for my 27th letter, which is shown below. I like how simple this page is and the aesthetic I am trying to continue throughout my whole type book. I believe that designing in a clean and concise way, it is easier for the viewer to focus on the important elements that are on the page.

This morning while dropping my youngest daughter(Malisha) off at deycare, I was asked if I wanted to come back to sing and read to the children☺️. I immediately said yes. . . . Looking back to those years in prison where I participated in a monthly bedtime story program that recorded you reading a book that was sent home to your child.
