Bending the Curve

Good news, everybody: the tesseract factory has increasing production rates:

This doesn’t tell us too much, of course. There were, notably, a pandemic and my first summer off since 2013 during this period. (That was the summer I first starting posting here, incidentally.) This is suggestive, though, that the balance during grad school is at least vaguely tenable. After all, it’s not like my personality and habits have really changed all that much since January. However, I don’t have to commute anymore, which saves me several hours per day.

I have been trying to be more expressive, though. Realizing how little pushback my opinion and personal posts actually get has helped me retreat from fear, just a touch. I think some of the bad actors who made the risk/reward matrix lean “against” in the past have unfollowed me or stopped using Tumblr, and those of you who are still around are generally nicer people. Plenty of people I liked have also left, though I suspect that that has more to do with explaining the taper during my senior year and subsequent unemployment. Several of the people are still active on Twitter, which does apply some incentive to spend more time there.

My plans for the future of the blog are essentially more of the same, with some possible tweaks. Even that, though, is mostly in the direction I’ve already described. What do my friends want to see, though? I’m open to suggestions (though, of course, no guarantees). In the coming months I’ll be doing my master’s thesis, which—in combination with coursework—may really cut down on my free time online, but could also provide a lot of interesting content. I haven’t decided the exact topic yet, but think something in the realm of spacecraft propulsion and interplanetary mission design. Does that sound interesting to people?

In any case, I should have my MS by the end of the academic year, and with that in hand, a job. I won’t venture any serious predictions about my Tumblr usage after that, besides “it will continue”, because I’ve been living under the shadow of the higher education system so long that I’m not sure what life will be like without it. Happier, I rather suspect. How that will affect my Tumblr usage is even harder to predict.

Ben to go on his run (maybe he takes Brutus, it all depends how snuggled up he is in bed), but then most of the time unless Cullen has gotten up while he’s been gone, comes back to bed

I think if he had his choice, it’d be Cullen.  But between his own coursework and grading everyone else’s coursework he’s probably generally the last to bed. He probably also keeps saying ‘i’ll be in in five minutes!! i swear!!!’ *3 hours later….*

what they playfully tease each other over

Ben will eternally tease Cullen over being a nerd ‘why art thou being a dick’, and Cullen will always tease Ben over acting like a jock.  But I could also imagine like…far into the future Cullen bringing up certain things about Ben before he was out and be like ‘omg do u remember when u were such a baby gay….ugh so sweet’

what they do when the other’s having a bad day

When Cullen’s having a bad day I could see Ben giving in on the healthy food battle, and they like…Order a pizza, cuddle on the couch (brutus staring longingly until they finally let him uo), watch some netflix (probably something that Ben wouldn’t like…Like the Crown or the Tudors or something ~nerdy~ as he would say).  When Ben’s having a bad day, Cullen knows he usually goes out running to sort everything out and in the mean time Cullen makes one of the only dishes he can make really well which is homemade mac and cheese (it has like….5 different cheeses in it, is covered in bread crumbs and it’s just….mhmmmm) and heats up some garlic bread bc carbs.  He probably also queues up the musical episode of Grey’s Anatomy because like….How can you not laugh while watching that train wreck.

how they say ‘i’m sorry’ after arguments

Cullen actually says ‘I’m sorry’, he’s never been averse to admitting he’s wrong.  But Ben’s a bit more stubborn, and I think his way of saying sorry is more in his actions than his words.  Although, sometimes, I could even see that being a point of contention, if they got in like a really bad fight, Cullen would be like ‘why can’t you just say sorry???’

Well, I mean, they’re both California natives, so at first they have an absolute fucking meltdown ‘WHAT’S HAPPENING HTE SKY IS FALLING WHAT IN TH EFUCK’, and i could see them having a rainy day in, but if it lasted more than a day or two, they’d probably go out exploring (Cullen has always loved the way things look wet, and then Ben probably makes fun of him for romanticizing it), bring brutus along who also would be in the midst of a meltdown bc he is sO not used to it.  (also many years ahead bringing their kids and watching as they test out their new rain boots by jumping in the biggest puddles they can find)

how they surprise each other

Cullen surprises Ben by cooking…And it actually being decent.  Unfortunately Ben is the only one of them that adjusted to leaving the lap of luxury where someone always cooks for you, while Cullen never really did.  He sticks to easy, simple (and sometimes pre-prepared) food.  But if Cullen was trying to surprise Ben, he’d definitely really put some effort into cooking, something with a healthy element to it as well (cauliflower pizza crust anyone).  And I think the way Ben could surprise Cullen is by like….Sneakily dropping in a Shakespeare quote somewhere, or at least a reference to one?  Bc like then Cullen would know he like put effort into going through and reading something and knowing it’s meaning so it could be used in the right situation and–

I could see, even years being together Ben is still a little bit out of place when it comes to PDA, which is okay because other than the occasional quick peck or holding hands (easy stuff like that), Cullen isn’t that huge on PDA either.  But I could definitely see  ( and once again this is after they’ve been together for quite awhile at this point) drunk them being the most affectionate.  Like maybe they’re at a holiday party and they’re on the border of tipsy and drunk and it’s like no one else in the world exists.  They have their arms draped around eachother, and maybe they’re not even making out or anything, but they’re faces are super close and they’re just whispering at each other, maybe abbreviated with lil��� kisses here and there, but it’s just so sickeningly obvious that they love eachother by the way they’re smiling at each other and everyone is just like ‘omg get a room’.
