Hundreds of bats have been rescued by Austin Bat Refuge this week after a record-setting winter freeze earlier this month left some of the critters trapped in ice, injured, cold-stunned or dead.
Lee Mackenzie and Dianne Odegard, [...] who run Austin Bat Refuge, have picked up as many as roughly 600 bats, dead and alive, every day since Monday [22 February 2021] from multiple Central Texas bridges. "It's just horrific," Mackenzie said. Mackenzie and Odegard are working to rehydrate surviving bats and feed them before releasing them back to their roosts under the bridges. [...] Even before a half-foot of snow blanketed the Austin area, callers to the refuge were reporting bats stuck in ice at their homes. The refuge, which never lost power during the freeze, received calls every day about found bats. [...] Once snow and ice began to melt, bats were brought to the refuge in boxes and bags and Odegard and Mackenzie started to check bridges for the animals.
The pair said a lot of the bats are traumatized and stressed. "You can just see the look in their eyes and see they're shocked by this like many of us were," Mackenzie said. [...]
Although many bats in Texas migrate south to Mexico and Central America during the winter months, as many as 100,000 bats can linger year-round in the Austin area. Roosts under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge have helped keep bats warm when temperatures start to drop. The spaces are 16 inches deep and 1 inch wide and can retain heat for the bats.
In the past three to five years, the Mexican free-tailed bats in the world’s largest urban bat colony next to the American-Statesman building also have been extending their stay in town because Austin’s average temperatures have gotten warmer or because the animals are sick, said Sarah Whitson, a former wildlife officer for Austin Animal Protection.
Cold weather works as a trigger to leave for bats, who like temperatures in the 70s, 80s and 90s, Whitson told the Statesman in 2019. [...] February temperatures in Austin this year [2021] hit a high of 85 degrees — less than 10 days before the record freeze, according to the National Weather Service — and Wednesday’s [24 February 2021] high was 86. [...]
Bat fatalities are also being reported across the state. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials have received reports of bats being found dead under bridges. The department is tracking bat deaths and the deaths of other animals due to the freeze online.
A bat colony under a bridge at Waugh Drive in Buffalo Bayou Park in Houston was hit by the freeze, and about 2,000 Mexican free-tailed bats who live under the Houston bridge were killed by the freezing temperatures, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Mackenzie and Odegard have only picked up a handful of bats each day from around Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. It's possible that some of the 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats who live under bridge may have fallen into the lake. Mackenzie said that during daily checks, he has yelled out to kayakers on the water if they saw bats swimming or on pilings. Other bats living under a bridge on Dittmar Road may have been washed away when ice started to melt, Mackenzie said. [...]
Mackenzie and Odegard said they've released 400 or 500 bats over the last few days to roosts under Interstate 35 at Wells Branch Parkway and Howard Lane.

Promising New Rooftop Bar Overlooks the Great Wheel Downtown
In recent restaurant news, Mike Easton is opening a pasta restaurant in West Seattle, Vita Uva’s natural wine shop has closed, and Georgetown’s Deep Sea Sugar and Salt cake bakery has closed its Airstream trailer. As for the updates below, Rhein Haus is open in Leavenworth, Macrina Bakery has expanded to Capitol Hill, and the Charter Hotel’s Fog Room bar is now mixing drinks with a view downtown.
Have intel about a newly opened restaurant, bar, cafe, or other food emporium that’s been overlooked? Tipping is essential: Send Eater the details over the Seattle tipline and we’ll check it out. Meanwhile, check out this other post for more of Seattle’s restaurant openings from earlier in 2018.
September 11, 2018
LEAVENWORTH — The Central District’s hip German beer and bocce hall, Rhein Haus, now sports a huge two-story expansion in the Bavarian-themed mountain town of Leavenworth. The fourth Rhein Haus location — additional locations opened in Denver in 2015 and Tacoma in 2017 — doesn’t have bocce courts, but it does serve the German brews, schnitzels, giant pretzels, and brats familiar to fans of the growing chain. Status: Certified open. 707 Highway 2, Leavenworth.
CAPITOL HILL — Macrina Bakery’s fifth location has arrived, this time on Capitol Hill’s 19th Avenue, in the former Tully’s building. While bread is the local chainlet’s main commercial specialty, the cafes serve an array of pastries, tarts, soups croissants, cakes, coffee, and sandwiches. At this new spot, there’s also brunch on the weekends, along with communal tables, a grab-and-go section, and a true urban unicorn: a parking lot. Status: Certified open. 746 19th Ave.
DOWNTOWN — With indoor seating and a rooftop lounge overlooking the waterfront and the Great Wheel, Fog Room is perched on the 16th floor of Hilton’s new Charter Hotel. There are small bites, like seared scallops with tomatillo and avocado salsa, and original cocktails with local ingredients, including Twisted Bliss, featuring mezcal, peach, and manzanilla sherry. This place has potential, especially as hotel bars go, given that former Rob Roy manager Jesse Cyr is the assistant general manager, and Silas Manlove, formerly of the Nest at the Thompson hotel, is general manager. The bar joins the hotel’s Argentine restaurant, Patagon. Status: Certified open. 1610 2nd Ave., Floor 16.
Correction: September 11, 2018, 9:30 p.m. This article was updated to reflect that Fog Room no longer promises live music, in contrast with information sent in a press release.

Bao House specializes in open-faced steam buns in the International District.
Bao House/FB
BELLEVUE — Belltown’s La Parisienne French Bakery has added a Bellevue address, and it’s connected to a wine bar, Cépaé Tasting Room. Cépaé claims to have the largest selection of wines by the glass in the Seattle area, with 120 bottles — a broad mix from Europe, the U.S., and South America — all available as 1⁄2-ounce or 5-ounce pours. The bakery’s selection, meant to complement the wines next door, includes pastries from croissants to Paris-Brest, lunch options like salad nicoise, sandwiches, and quiches, and, in the evening, boards with charcuterie, seafood, cheese, and vegetables. Status: Certified open. 258 106th Ave. NE.
INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT — Newcomer Bao House serves a small menu of open-faced Taiwanese steam buns, a type of bao. The selection of fillings includes 24-hour brined pork and roasted duck. Accompanying dishes range from fried egg rolls to fried fish balls to chicken wings. The restaurant is already open but holding a grand opening celebration on August 12 with two-for-one bao and drinks. Status: Certified open. 514 S. King St.
QUEEN ANNE — Uptown Hophouse’s 24 beer and cider taps are flowing near Key Arena. The sports bar’s current tap list includes names like Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider, Georgetown Brewing, Fremont Brewing, and Pfriem Family Brewers. There’s food, too, like fingerling potatoes with curry ketchup, a charcuterie board, spicy coconut curry bowl, and Cubano sandwich. Status: Certified open. 219 1st Ave N #101.
August 2, 2018
Capitol Hill-born Victrola has opened a downtown cafe.
Victrola/FB
DOWNTOWN — Capitol Hill’s respected Victrola Coffee Roasters has opened a downtown cafe at 3rd and Pine, inside the Macy’s building, which now also houses Amazon offices above. It’s only Victrola’s fourth location in its 18-year history. As with the other locations, the new cafe serves espresso drinks, pastries, and sandwiches in a modern space with lounge chairs and window benches. Status: Certified open. 300 Pine St, Suite 100.
SOUTH LAKE UNION — Jeffrey Kessenich, former chef at the late Tanglewood Supreme, has opened airy and ambitious Birch next to White Swan Public House on Lake Union. Diners have two options at Birch: a three-course prix fixe menu for $50 that includes choices for antipasto, primo, and secondo courses, plus a dessert add-on for $11; and a seven-course chef’s tasting menu for $70, which puts diners in the hands of the kitchen. Kessenich promises locally sourced, sustainable ingredients with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options. Status: Certified open. 1001 Fairview Ave. N.
GREEN LAKE — The owners of Capitol Hill’s La Cocina Oaxaqueña have added a sibling in the similarly named Cocina Oaxaca, serving Mexican staples in the former Mio Sushi space. Yelp reviews thus far praise the restaurant’s shrimp tacos and fajitas. Other specialties include tlayudas (thin, crunchy tortillas topped with refried beans, lettuce or cabbage, avocado, and meat) and the Oaxacan stew, pozole. Status: Certified open. 7900 E Green Lake Drive N Suite 107.
July 24, 2018
Heritage Distilling Co. has added a Capitol Hill distillery and tasting room.
Adam H. Callaghan/Eater
BELLTOWN — Renovated Hotel Five has added a dining component called Pineapple Bistro and Bar, a nod to parent company Staypineapple. The restaurant features a slew of pineapple accents, new floors and furniture, and a rebuilt bar with 22 seats, huge TVs, and giant Scrabble. The menu includes themed drinks like the Pineapple Express with bourbon, caramelized pineapple puree, maraschino cherries, and club soda. Food ranges from customizable mac and cheese to sandwiches and snacks like barbecue pork sliders and buffalo chicken wings. Status: Certified open. 2200 5th Ave.
QUEEN ANNE — Matias Tona, who helped open Grappa in the same neighborhood, and his brother Kleon are now serving Mediterranean tapas and cocktails at their new restaurant, Dandylion, which also includes a private events space and “speakeasy bar” called the Den. The Tonas source local produce and plan to change the menu seasonally. Current dishes include meatballs with chimichurri sauce, chorizo with yogurt and potato chips, and squid with potato herb puree and saffron oil. Status: Certified open. 532 Queen Anne Ave. N.
CAPITOL HILL — Gig Harbor-based Heritage Distilling Co. now has a Capitol Hill location in addition to a recently opened Ballard expansion. The Capitol Hill tasting room also includes a distillery, bottling operation, and retail shop. Visitors can try flights of the company’s full lineup here, including its many award-winning flavored vodkas, gins, and whiskeys, as well as buy bottles and merchandise and take classes on cocktail-making. In the coming months, the company will add a private events space and overflow seating, too. Status: Certified open. 1201 10th Ave.
July 23, 2018
eneral Porpoise’s doughnuts overflow with custards, creams, and curds.
Suzi Pratt for Eater
LAURELHURST — Renowned chef Renee Erickson and her Sea Creatures restaurant group have opened their fourth General Porpoise doughnut shop. The new Laurelhurst cafe, near University Village, features a unique selection of coffee roasters and a full slate of sugar-coated doughnuts filled with a seasonal selection of jams, jellies, curds, custards, and creams, from classics like vanilla custard to less-common options like peanut butter and jelly or rose cream. Still to come: a General Porpoise location in Los Angeles. Status: Certified open. 4520 Union Bay Place NE.
CENTRAL DISTRICT — Kin Dee has opened at the corner of 23rd and Madison, serving Thai standards like pad Thai and panang curry along with a handful of street food dishes like steamed chicken with garlic ginger rice and a side of broth (kao mun gai), duck noodle soup, and five-spice pork shank. Yelp reviews so far are largely positive, with diners enjoying the hot basil with chicken, pumpkin curry, and tom yum soup. Status: Certified open. 2301 E Madison St.
CAPITOL HILL — Melrose Market has gained a wine bar and bottle shop called Marseille, near Sitka and Spruce. The focus here is trendy natural wines, made with minimal intervention, like orange wine. Marseille is also open for lunch, brunch, and dinner, serving plates like clams with fennel in leek broth, braised monkfish in an almond saffron sauce, and avocado toast topped with spring onion and pickled shrimp. Status: Certified open. 1531 Melrose Ave.
July 19, 2018
Asadero Mexican steakhouse has moved to a bigger location in Kent.
Asadero/FB
KENT — Popular Mexican steakhouse Asadero, which also has a busy Ballard address, has moved to a bigger location in Kent. Owner David Orozco’s restaurant now has room for 80 diners — twice as many as before. He’s kept the menu mostly the same, with a few enticing additions: prime carnita con chile (braised tenderloin with ranchero salsa), vacio Akaushi (Akaushi bavette steak served on a hot stone), and bone marrow gorditas (bone marrow and chopped steak in thick corn tortillas). Orozco is also opening a Tacoma location in early 2019. Status: Certified open. 310 Washington Ave. N.
SODO — Urban Works, the collection of warehouses in Sodo, has added a Patterson Cellars tasting room. It joins other tenants — mostly wineries — like Kerloo Cellars, Sleight of Hand Cellars, Schooner Brewing Company, and Nine Pies Pizzeria. This is the fourth location for Patterson, which also pours its “approachable New World wines” in Leavenworth and at two Woodinville locations. Status: Certified open. 3861-D 1st Ave. S.
WALLA WALLA — Chef Jason Wilson (Miller’s Guild, the Lakehouse) is giving Seattleites another reason to trek out to Eastern Washington with Eritage luxury resort and restaurant. It’s set on 300 acres surrounded by vineyards in Walla Walla — recently named “Wine Town” of the year by Sunset Magazine. Guests have access to 10 suites and a menu of locally sourced ingredients from the area’s farmers and ranchers, plus a local wine selection, of course. Wilson’s Fire and Vine restaurant group is also working on Walla Walla Steak Co. and Crossbuck Brewing nearby. Status: Certified open. 1319 Bergevin Springs Rd.

527 photos (and also 7 videos) taken in 9 hours with but 48 “keepers” among them, rendering a self-accepted 9.10% “success” rate at a leadenly 58.56 shots per hour (what I desire to achieve, at the least, as I cover the streets is a 10% “success” rate paired with a pace of 100 shots per hour).

PREFACE:
A week ago (last Saturday), after my Detroit Street Session ended, I went to meet with my friend, Mr. E.P., to be a guest as he photographed folks in Highland Park at an old stamping factory. Before I knew it, I was informally assisting his efforts at his request by moving things around during the shoot, which was my humble honor. The next morning (last Sunday), at 4 AM, I awoke with the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. My neck (on the right side) felt as secure as a spiderweb thread strung above and across an inferno (my head holder was in the hands of an angry throb). I cried, though I did not cry well (crying is essentially impossible for me nowadays), and I wept like this without any comfort in sight. Ibuprofen helped somewhat in the coming days, and I healed a good bit (though noticeably not fully). I took time off work to heal, and I now face the prospect of quitting my day job on account of this horrific turn in my wellbeing. There was melancholy in imagining how I would hang a camera strap around my neck all day to do as I have done before. Today was my test. Could I keep coming back to seek my passion through the pentaprism? I thanked the Lord that it was Winter still. I thought that the cold might “ice” my wound. I wrapped two scarves tightly around my neck like a neck brace, and I took 400 mg of ibuprofen when I arrived (I could have taken more; I should have taken more; I wanted to see if I could face the pain). I made it nine-hours despite the pain, and I hope my “top ten” shots from the day are not just a point of pride for myself; I hope I still have it in me to make things others might like too.

PATH TAKEN:
Greektown - Over the past several weeks, at this juncture, I would have changed into my Carhart bib. It was around 25° F outside with 10 MPH winds in the morning, but yet it did not quite feel cold-enough to justify the extra layer. It ended up reaching around 33° F in the afternoon with the same winds. It was a beautifully live-with-able, climate-wise, day in the city I do not love (but am learning, ever so sluggishly, to appreciate).
Campus Martius Park
The Esplanade on Woodward Avenue - I experimented with my Tokina SZ-X 60-300mm f/4-5.6 lens, using the zoom in video mode to trace the light up signs on one side of Woodward Avenue reflecting on the windows of the building on the other side of the avenue. I also spied a scene with a Detroit firetruck and police cruiser with glorious steam behind them coming up from the manholes. Attempting to satisfactorily-frame a video clip with a 300mm zoom lens forces me to disdain my $20 miniature tripod and wish for a nicer alternative. There is an overpriced camera store an hour from my home that I treat like the last branch I reach for as I fall down a cliff. I suppose I will have to visit that shop soon if I am going to be able to rely on my gear to do more of what I want it to do.
Spirit of Detroit Plaza
Hart Plaza - The other day, I fell asleep with my iPhone plugged into a charger. When I woke up the next morning, both cameras on the phone (as well as the LED light) were no longer functional. As a photographer, this was a left-handed sword stuck into the gut for me, and I yearned to be able to post on my Instagram the continuation of the shredding of the American flags in Hart Plaza. I may email mayor Mike Duggan (Detroit’s seventy-fifth mayor) and a local news organization about this tattered American standard debacle.
Campus Martius Park - Last Saturday, in Highland Park, I met two men that were in the “Art Deco Society” for Detroit. Being a lover of Art Deco myself, I asked them an obvious question: “What is the greatest building in all of Detroit?” They were torn between the Guardian Building (my #1) and the Fisher Building (my #2). I walk by the Guardian Building just about every week, because it is in the heart of Downtown Detroit. The Fisher Building is a number of miles away in what is known as City Center (beyond downtown and even midtown). I decided then to hunt for the Fisher.
Fox Theatre
The LCA (Little Caesars Arena)
MOCAD
The DIA (Detroit Institute of the Arts)
The Detroit Public Library - There was an older gentleman waiting near Woodward Avenue for the library to open up for the day. He and I chatted for a minute, and I shared with him my antipathy regarding the otherwise breathtaking Italian Renaissance-style building that housed the Detroit Public Library. There were names etched into the Vermont marble near the top of the building, visible from Woodward Avenue. They were, from left to right: Aeschylus; Archimedes; Socrates; Plato; Cicero; Caesar; Aristotle; Epictetus. :—:— I was perplexed at the choices as well as the order in which the choices appeared. I do not know much about half of the named men. I do know that Socrates taught Plato, who taught Aristotle, who taught Alexander the Great. I was curious why Cicero and Caesar appeared between Plato and Aristotle. I was also curious why Alexander the Great was omitted from the listing. Certainly, Cicero was one of the greatest minds of the last twenty centuries. It is because of Cicero that I adore Latin (well, Augustine’s adoration of Cicero’s Latin writing is what made me start teaching myself Latin [it is said that to read Cicero in Latin is the closest one can get to hearing music through language]). The ultimate irony is that above the front door to the Detroit Public Library, these words are inscribed: “Knowledge is Power” :—:— I laughed with the man I met outside the library regarding what I thought was a silly disparity. How much did that building cost to erect only to have such a blunder (in my layman’s opinion)? I hope to go inside the library and seek the answer to this one day soon (I fully expect [or at least hope] to hear a sensible explanation to correct my unsatisfactory opinion of the selections and ordering of the names on the front of the library).
The Department of Mortuary Science (for Wayne State University) - It did not smell like anything outside of this building, but then again, it was a 24° F morning! Hahaha. This is as close to the Fisher as I could get. It was then 10 AM, and I had an 11 AM appointment to make with my pal, Roy. I took a photo of the yet-distant Fisher Building with my 300mm lens before releasing it from my sights. I will catch the Fisher another day!
University of Michigan Detroit Center
Mack Avenue
Milano Bakery - Arriving fifteen-minutes early, my security guard pal that looks after the bakery commiserated with me. I told him of my insane week that included the neck injury (much more craziness than what I recounted in this write-up happened, as happens sometimes). He had similar and crazier tales to trade with mine, and he left me with much encouragement. I always feel imbued with apotheosis (pretty good word) by such outright kindness; I dare say such treatment makes me a merry man (and to that, I say, “Let it be!”). Truth be told, Roy did not show much of a tan at all for having spent the previous two-weeks in Florida. He took his truck-mounted camper and Harley to a campsite in the panhandle part of the state. He met with a realtor and scoped a $150K fixer-upper in a $250K “working-class” neighborhood six-miles from the ocean. The area in which he hopes to soon reside is in the middle of several nature preserves and is largely devoid of tourists—for now (it is slowly being converted into a course of tourist traps). He plans to list his Michigan home in April and be gone not long after. I will miss him, and I told him as much a few times. He reverberated in kind in each instant.
Bert’s Market Place Jazz - I hopped in Roy’s red Mercedes, and we parked at Bert’s (I think of Bert, the owner, as the black Willy Wonka of Detroit [he is a man of wonder and universal kindness]). Peckish but picky, the two of us were; we skipped Bert’s and headed to get tea leaves at Rocky’s instead.
Rocky’s Nuts
Dearborn Fresh Supermarket - Roy took me to a favorite supermarket of his in Dearborn after complaining Rocky’s sold their loose leaf black tea for $20 a pound. It was $6 a pound at this place.
Urban Bean Co. - Roy and I had our regular beverages (he had an espresso [double shot]). I had an overpriced ginger drink.
Avalon Cafe and Bakery - I ran into a group of Cameroonian (central-African) vacationers here that were trying to locate B-Dubs. I volunteered to be their temporary tour guide to help them find the Victorian-Era (ca. 1840’s-1870’s) building that housed the largest Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in America.
Buffalo Wild Wings - I photographed the vacationers here before heading back toward my car with the things I bought at Rocky’s. They had spent the day tracing black history through the city of Detroit. I hope their day continued with as much charm and glee as had been described to me by their chaperone.
Greektown - I had loose leaf teas from Rocky’s in a grocery bag clipped to my camera bag that I wanted to drop off at my car before making one last pass through the city. On my path back, a homeless man put a pair of brand new (still in its packaging) winter gloves in my face, offering to sell me them (I was wearing gloves at the time myself). I was disgusted. Someone likely had given those new gloves to him to keep him warm, and he preferred, rather, to make quick cash (possibly for his next score) off them. I had not seen any homeless folks yet in the day. Earlier in the week, to redirect my pain into a noble cause, I bought ten pairs of size 9-12 men’s long black socks from the dollar store that I filled with gospel tracts. “This man would have sold the socks,” I reasoned, and I walked away in sadness and bitterness having not given him anything but a brief scolding for crying wolf, as it were.
Donald “Sunn” Anderson’s art stand - For the first time in 2019, I saw my good friend, Mr. Anderson, with his art stand set up in Greektown. He told me about his brick and mortar studio space / store front and said I should check it out (it was nearby).
Monroe Street - I saw a man walking a bike down the sidewalk, which to me says “bad day” or “flat tire.” He looked familiar—like a homeless man I met last summer on a bridge in Eastern Market (also walking a [different] bike then). I asked him if his bike had a flat. He said no and added that he found the bike left under a bridge for three days and decided to take it as his own. I told him it was not his and that he should return it immediately. He said that a “known drug dealer” he knew claimed it, though the man refused to acquiesce it, since the dealer was mean. I figured the bike was stolen and that the “known” dealer was his dealer. I recalled how this homeless man told me last summer how he had just been released from a long prison sentence for a crime committed in his youth. The world had entered the Digital Age while he was locked up, and, by Providence, he had connected with a homeless service, called “Southpoint,” that provided training in computers, which resulted in his working for Dan Gilbert’s loan company. I hinted at our previous conversation from this past summer. The man claimed no knowledge of “Southpoint” and said he was never given such a job, though he admitted he was the man from last summer. He lied to me before as well as now! Feeling pity for the man, I gave him a pair of the socks I had on me. He snatched them from my hand and forcefully stuffed them into one of his front coat pockets. We parted ways, and my mind split under the weight of my naivety. I have told innumerable homeless folks since that summer meeting about this “Southpoint” resource that was nothing but a druggy’s deception.
Campus Martius Park - A faithful street preacher, named Reuben, was with his little boy plying his professed faith to the people passing his portable P.A. system. I walked up to him and told him I had great pictures of him if he would just send me a message. I handed him one of my business cards, and he smiled and apologized for not getting in touch before. I wanted to capture the man on camera before I left, so I started super close with my Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 lens and finished with my Tokina SZ-X 60-300mm f/4-5.6 lens (as zoomed in as I could muster). :—:— In my passage out I ran into a third “homeless” man with freshly-laundered folded blankets and a large smart phone and plenty of food atop a state-of-the-art walker. Judging by the quality and condition of the items he lugged, he seemed to have a home. Determined not to be fooled again, I rejected his pleas for monetary help and walked on by (albeit with a heavy heart at my coldness toward him).
Capitol Park
David Klein Gallery - I asked the kind folks at the gallery about the latest MetroTimes cover picture. It looked just like the Low Rider style of a recent showing at the gallery. They said they were not in cahoots with the magazine and lamented that fact, since it could have been excellent publicity for their recent Low Rider-themed gallery showing.
Campus Martius Park - I again photographed the street preacher and his young son. I wanted to get a shot of the two near one another with the son imitating his father. The shot in my “top ten” is as close to that goal as I could attain in the time I spent shooting there. I caved and gave the (”third”) homeless man a pair of socks, though when I tossed them at his hand, they fell short and hit the sidewalk, making him pick them up. This was an absolute accident, and I again felt bad (I am all too apologetic; am I becoming Canadian? The Windsor Hum must have buzzed my brains bonkers!).
The Hudson Site
The YMCA - Photographer, though I am, I do not look at everyone around me always. As I was on the lookout for Mr. Anderson’s brick-and-mortar studio space/storefront, a fourth homeless man passing against me in the sidewalk exclaimed at me, “Eastern MarkeT” (emphasizing the final letter in the word “market”). I looked up, startled, and I asked if he worked at Eastern Market too. He glared at me with the wildest eyes a mentally-drained man could manage, and I looked him up and down. He had on a coat that unzipped into a blanket that seems to be the universal winter uniform of Detroit’s homeless. Preoccupied with my goal of finding Mr. Anderson’s spot, I walked away without giving him another word.
Donald “Sunn” Anderson’s brick-and-mortar studio/storefront - I was amazed by Mr. Anderson’s storefront. His window art skills are fantastic.
Greektown - I saw the “fourth” homeless man (from just before) ahead of my planned path back to my car, so I ran up to meet his pace on the sidewalk and asked him what his outburst from before was about. He said I had told him there was work to be found in Eastern Market and that he had sought a job there to no avail. I apologized for his wasted efforts and told him he had done a great thing to get on with finding work for himself. I gave him a pair of socks, and he pocketed them with grace in his front coat pocket. I asked him where he was staying. He said he lived under a certain bridge. Our conversation continued through different topics. He said he had girl problems. Trying to peer-ify him, I joked back (referencing the famous Jay-Z song), “I feel bad for you, son!” The joke was lost on him; he blankly looked forward and kept walking. At right about that time, I reached Mr. Anderson’s stand and broke off to chat with him instead.
Donald “Sunn” Anderson’s art stand - I told Mr. Anderson that every self-respecting business in Detroit needs “Sunn” to shine upon its windows. He laughed. I was serious. There should be a campaign to get his art all over Detroit in this medium.
Greektown - Parting with Mr. Anderson, I caught up again with the “fourth” homeless man. I brought up his girl problems and asked what happened. He replied that a lady he had gotten with “bogeyed” him. Unfamiliar with what this meant, I asked for clarification. He loudly shouted some gibberish at me, at which point I locked eyes with a beat cop that happened at that moment in our walk to be to our right. I gave the policeman a bug-eyed look of pitying confusion about the homeless man’s outburst and walked onward. When out of earshot of the policeman, I told the homeless man that such an explosive response to a level-headed question was not socially proper and added that we were done for the time with our conversation.

WHAT WENT ON ON THIS DAY OUT IN DETROIT?
I sought to find if I could shoot street photography despite my pain from an injury incurred exactly a week ago. I think I succeeded, though my mobility was limited. :—:— The torn American flags in Hart Plaza were still (and further) torn. Unable to post about them online at the time, I think I should email the mayor and a news organization about this embarrassment. :—:— I fell into four odd interactions with some of the homeless in Detroit today. I want to learn the best advice to pass onto them.

“Inside baseball” concepts talked about in this Detroit Street Photography Session —
● Carhart Bib - I used to have to seek shelter from the winds and the cold more often when it got “bone-chilling” cold (~15° F) before I started wearing Carhart overalls on colder outings. This “bib” also lets you get low without dirtying your regular clothes underneath (as a tall fellow, I find extra goodness in lower angles).
● Mini Tripod - Get one. Get a good one that stays put when you set it. Learn from my mistake, and buy yourself a steady, sturdy mini tripod. I swear by mine any other time. You will get too much camera shake if you try to steady (by hand) a drooping (cheap, like mine) tripod.
● Art Deco - There are almost a dozen Art Deco buildings / structures in Detroit (The Guardian Building; The Fisher Building; The Penobscot Building; The Livingston Lighthouse; The Rackham Building; The David Scott Tower; The Federal Building; The Detroit Free Press Building; The Macabees Building; The Water Board Building). Art Deco as a style is marked by modernistic aesthetics made with luxurious materials and executed with precise and complex designs. The 1920′s may well be my favorite decade of all time, and so, I am head over heels that Detroit has so many glorious Art Deco remnants yet extant. For any photographer, I would assert, such pretty pieces make for great pictures. :—:— Wherever you find yourself shooting shots, know what is around you and why it is there and why it is important (if at all). To borrow a phrase found atop a not-Art Deco building in Detroit: “Knowledge is Power!”
● Digital Age - We are in the Digital Age (a name for the present era that our offspring may change in a lifetime [or in eight]). To be in the present means you have the past to play off of. The sixteenth-century super-genius, Martin Luther, thought he was beyond spoiled to have press-printed books to use for study (this was a vast improvement in convenience over enormously-expensive and rare hand-copied scrolls and books). We have computers (and who knows what else in coming years?). A great photographer that sells his (and his father’s) prints in Eastern Market gave me great advice when I asked for his best wisdom for pursuing photography. He asked me, “is that a digital camera you are using?” I answered affirmatively. He said, “you basically have unlimited shots, given the memory card’s capacity over and above any film camera roll, so shoot everything you want to shoot, and take multiple shots each time.” We are in the Digital Age. Be retroactive if you like, but know that there are liminal conveniences that may teach you as much or more than dated, sometimes less-convenient approaches.

2019 NHL Mock Draft: Kings, Flames, Oilers in on Spencer Knight?
ST. PAUL, MN – SEPTEMBER 19: Group Langenbrunner goalie Spencer Knight (30) kicks the puck into the corner throughout the U.S.A. Hockey All-American Prospects Video Game between Group Leopold and Team Langenbrunner on September 19, 2018 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. Group Leopold defeated Group Langenbrunner 6-4.( Photo by Nick Wosika/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)
Spencer Knight– the top goaltending prospect of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft– shall be a topic of widespread rumination as we wait for June 21 and22 Which groups should be all-in on the prestigious netminder?
Undoubtedly the most critically acclaimed goaltending possibility of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Spencer Knight of the USA Hockey National Team Advancement Program promises to work as among the most discussed players over the course of the up and coming months.
There’s much to like about Knight. At 6-foot-3, 192 pounds, the extremely touted netminder marries athleticism with smarts, as his calm presence in between the pipelines will nearly definitely function as the central avenue through which one group’s dreams of getting a franchise player is translated into a truth in the not-so-distant future.
” Squid,” as he’s in some cases called, shall undoubtedly be a staple of the June 21 st first-round picks. The only concern, then, issues where he’ll end up. After all, this is a goaltender who can potentially be drafted amongst the very first ten choices in British Columbia– however which team, if any, would be ready to take such a considerable danger?
It’s difficult to anticipate where goaltenders will wind up and who will seriously consider exploratory alternatives of this variety. The Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames would be a good idea to amuse the thought of selecting Knight, undoubtedly, but absence of certainty worrying management and the taking place nature of late-round selection all but guarantee that neither group will wind up with the edge on this specific front.
It’s all the more likely, for that reason, that a company with multiple alternatives in the first-round will emerge triumphant in obtaining Knight. And if this line of questions is to be signed up for, the Los Angeles Kings– set to prepare for the inescapable minute in which franchise netminder Jonathan Quick regresses for great– would serve as a perfect landing spot for the American puck-stopper.
Our March 18 th mock draft– considered in conjunction with the league’s reverse standings– is as follows.
Colorado Avalanche— Jack Hughes (C)
Los Angeles Kings— Kaapo Kakko (RW)
Detroit Red Wings— Vasili Podkolzin (RW)

News and notes:

No. 18– The Buffalo Sabres will receive the St. Louis Blues’ first-round selection. The Sabres delivered Ryan O’Reilly to the Blues for 3 forwards and two draft picks.
No. 19– The Ottawa Senators will get the Columbus Blue Jackets’ first-round pick as part of the offer that sent out center Matt Duchene to Ohio.
No. 24– The New York Rangers will acquire the Winnipeg Jets’ 2019 first-round selection as part of the Kevin Hayes trade.
No. 27– The Los Angeles Kings will get the Toronto Maple Leafs’ first-rounder as part of the Jake Muzzin offer.
No. 28– The Anaheim Ducks are set to get a first-rounder from the Buffalo Sabres as part of the Brandon Montour trade.
No. 31– The New york city Rangers will acquire a conditional first-round selection from the Tampa Bay Lightning if the latter win the 2019 Stanley Cup (and a second-round choice if they do not). Since the Lightning currently hold the most points in the NHL, the draft order has actually tentatively considered them Stanley Cup champions.
The 57 th NHL Entry Draft shall happen in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 21 and22 Be sure to check back for more updates.

The 9 Best Beercation Destinations to Escape Your Winter Blues
As winter temperatures plummet across the Northern Hemisphere, there’s no time like the present to plan a far-flung winter getaway to someplace warm — as long as it has excellent beer.
From laid back locales in Southern California, to Southeast Asian cities where citizens are enthusiastically embracing craft, these nine beercation destinations are VinePair-approved for winter 2019.
Austin
Beer gardens are open all year long in Austin, where temperatures and attitudes are warm, and outdoor communal drinking encouraged. Easy Tiger, a beer garden and bakery, provides a welcome oasis from Sixth Street’s debauchery. On Rainey Street, Craft Pride serves Texas brews with pizza, and Banger’s offers more than 200 beers on tap, paired with mouthwatering sausages.
Standouts of Austin’s 37 breweries include Hops and Grain, with refreshing IPAs and pale lagers, and Blue Owl Brewing, which exclusively brews sessionable sours.
In South Lamar, Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company (“the ABGB”) pairs award-winning lagers with live music. Pinthouse Pizza offers a generously-topped pie and hazy IPAs.
In North Austin, the women-owned Brewtorium is stylish, spacious, and versatile, brewing everything from Brut IPA to Altbier. The Black Star Co-op, a unique concept brewpub, pours its own brews alongside other local selections, with tasty snacks like spicy buffalo cauliflower.
No Austin beercation would be complete without a trip to Hill Country to Jester King Brewery. Spend a languid afternoon sipping spontaneously fermented wild ales and hoppy farmhouse ales with brick-oven pizzas.
New Orleans
Whether you aim to join or avoid the Mardi Gras revelry, New Orleans has a beer scene worth celebrating.
Near the Mississippi River, NOLA Brewing, established in 2008, is joined by Courtyard Brewery, Urban South Brewery, and Port Orleans Brewing. The Avenue Pub is famous for its 24/7 schedule and big beer list.
In Marigny, Brieux Carré offers small-batch, sessionable pale ales, strong ales, and stouts. Frenchmen Street is home to the original d.b.a., a classic craft beer bar.
For beers, wings, and fries, head to Junction, which is “laid back, unobtrusive, and comes without the bro culture,” Ashtin Berry, local bartender and activist, told VinePair.
Miami
It’s peak time to visit Miami. After getting your beach fix, head to Wynwood for beer and art. Depending on your beercation style, you can take a tour (Wynwood Brewery & Art Tour, Wynwood Art and Beer Adventure), or venture out on your own.
Wynwood’s artsy reputation stems from the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor street-art museum. It’s also a popular place for breweries. J. Wakefield, famous nationwide for its sessionable sours, double IPAs, and imperial stouts, has a colorful, geek chic space (think graffiti meets Star Wars).
Other breweries include North American Breweries’ Wynwood Brewing, Boston Beer’s Concrete Beach Brewery, and Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Veza Sur Brewing, a Latin-American-inspired brewery created in collaboration between Bogota Beer and 10 Barrel Brewing.
Outside Wynwood, look for Funky Buddha in Oakland Park and MIA Brewing in Dora.
San Diego
San Diego County has more breweries than any other in the nation, earning it the nickname “the capital of craft.”
In Miramar, visit Pure Project for NEIPAs, AleSmith for imperial stouts, Mikkeller for a colorful array of sours, and Green Flash for classic West Coast IPAs.
Downtown, industry pioneers Karl Strauss and Coronado Brewing sandwich smaller outfits like Mission Brewing and Monkey Paw.
Breweries in the historic-yet-hip Gaslamp Quarter include Resident Brewing (located inside the Local restaurant) and Half Door Brewing. Stone Brewing has a taproom on J Street, as well as the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens at Liberty Station.
Modern Times has two locations: the brewery in Point Loma, and the “Flavordome” taproom in North Park.
Los Angeles
L.A.’s fresh faces of craft beer are revitalizing the sprawling city’s beer culture.
Downtown, Boomtown Brewery and Arts District Brewing champion local creatives alongside diverse beer offerings. Indie Brewing Company, across the Los Angeles River, hosts the Indie-pendent Women’s Club.
Father’s Office, a gastropub with locations in Santa Monica, Culver City, and Downtown, boasts unconventional burgers by chef Sang Yoon, and 36 beers on tap.
In Torrance, Monkish Brewing, Cosmic Brewery, and Smog City Brewing are close together enough for a brewery crawl.
Three Weavers in Inglewood celebrates community and diversity with beers like its soon-to-launch Komorebi IPA, a collaboration with Japan’s Coedo Brewery, in partnership with Japanese Craft Beer. (VinePair will be at Three Weavers on Feb. 27 to celebrate the launch of Komorebi IPA. More on that here.)
And California Sun, a new neighborhood pizza and beer joint from Artisanal Brewers Collective, is slated to open Feb. 11 on Sunset Boulevard. It’s serving up New York- and Detroit-style pizzas, salads, sides, and 100 craft beers.
Buenos Aires
In Argentina, “a grassroots craft beer revolution is taking place, leaving a wave of converts in its wake,” Isabel Albiston wrote in Lonely Planet in 2015. Buenos Aires is at the center of that revolution.
Bodega Cervecera, a beer shop in Palermo, is known as one of the first establishments to offer Argentine craft beer brands to the city’s drinkers. Beer-centric local chains like On Tap are spreading across the town. BlueDog Beer Station, from the owner of local Grunge Brewing, serves Grunge beers alongside local “gypsy” brewer selections. Minta’s & Pura Birra Club pairs cerveza artesanal with gourmet burgers, pizzas, and salads.
Broeders brews European- and American-inspired ales made with local hops, malt, and water. Its beers are also on tap at its owners’ Cajun-inspired restaurant, Nola.
Rio de Janeiro
Rio is hot this time of year, and its beer scene is heating up, too. In the shadow of Anheuser-Busch InBev, which has two plants here, a growing number of beer-centric brewpubs and bars make the city’s independent spirit increasingly palpable.
Hocus Pocus, founded in 2014, has a brewpub in Rio’s Botofogo neighborhood. 3 Cariocas shows local pride with beer names such as Session IPA NEMA, an award-winning IPA named after the Ipanema neighborhood; and Saison du Leblon, named for the trendy beach area once owned by Frenchman Charles Le Blond.
2 Cabeças is another trendy outfit that collaborates with breweries including U.S.-based “gypsy” brewer Stillwater Artisanal.
Beer bars include Hop Lab in Central Rio; Brewteco in Leblon and Barra; and Bier en Cultuur in Ipanema.
Singapore
This remarkably diverse, food-obsessed city-state can be as accessible or glitzy as you make it. Straddle both worlds at Level33, which claims to be the world’s highest urban craft brewery.
Smith Street Taps, located in a Chinatown hawker center, is a “nexus for craft beer geeks,” and Burger Joint offers burgers, bourbon, an international beer selection, and a cocktail program by Proof & Company.
In Tanjong Pagar, the trendy, neon-sign-lit Freehouse bar has 18 taps dedicated to craft brews, served alongside pub grub from fries to frog legs.
RedDot Brewhouse, the first microbrewery opened by local Singaporeans (sans expats), is known for its Monster Green Pilsner, a Czech-style pilsner infused with spirulina.
Druggists, a restaurant and beer bar, pours Scandinavian-style craft beers paired with wings, sandwiches, and sliders.
At Alchemist Beer Lab, “beer infusion towers” introduce novel ingredients to house-made brews. Little Island Brewing Co., from the same owners, is a microbrewery and smokehouse located near a beach.
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
Ho Chi Minh City is home to more than a dozen local breweries, and although many were founded by English-speaking expats, a majority incorporate Vietnamese ingredients and culture into their beers and taprooms.
Platinum Beer, established in 2014, is considered one of the country’s craft beer pioneers. Pasteur Street Brewing, founded in 2015 by Americans John Reid and Alex Violette (the latter an alum of Colorado’s Upslope Brewing), offers multiple award-winning beers, such as its Passion Fruit Wheat Ale, and Cyclo Imperial Chocolate Stout, made with cacao beans from a local chocolatier.
Sessionable beers are the name of the game in Saigon. Heart of Darkness’s Conquistador’s Mexican Pilsner served with salt and lime, Rooster Beer’s Blonde Ale, and LAC Brewing’s Mango IPA are local favorites, and East West Brewing’s Saigon Rosé is an ultra-light (3 percent ABV), raspberry-infused treat.

Opinion: I Find it Hard to Root Against Villanova
I know what you’re thinking; this is a stunner.
It’s just stunning that Crossing Broad, a website started by a Villanova alumnus, would publish a pro-Villanova article.
But Kyle isn’t writing this story from an insider’s perspective. I’m writing it as an outsider whose team was booted from the NCAA Tournament by the Wildcats two weeks ago.
Common knowledge says I should be angry about that. Woe is me! I can’t cheer for Villanova since they dropped 13 three-pointers on us and finished the game on a 43-26 run. I have to hate the Wildcats, or whatever.
I don’t hate them, not one bit.
I like Nova. I was pulling for them to beat the brakes off of Texas Tech and Kansas, which they did. And I’ll be pulling for them against Michigan tonight, because there’s just nothing to dislike about Villanova. It’s a classy program run by a classy coach with a group of players that stay out of trouble and do things the right way.
The coach
When I worked at Eyewitness News, Selection Sunday was always a bear, just a tough day with a lot of work to do – a lot of highlights to edit, a lot of interviews to conduct, and a lot of graphics for the art department to build.
You’ve got coaches coming off of Saturday conference tournament games who sleep about four hours before joining their team on campus to watch the national broadcast and find out when and where they’re playing. Then, they do a BARRAGE of media with some folks on-site, and some folks off-site.
To that point, I can’t remember a time when Jay Wright ever said no to an interview. He would get back from the Big East tournament late on a Saturday night, do the selection thing with his team on Sunday, talk to reporters in person, then walk over to a separate room to do four separate interviews with Action News, NBC 10, FOX 29, and us. And it’s not like the television stations were major players in the sports market. We weren’t the Inquirer or Comcast SportsNet, and we didn’t cover Villanova the same way we covered the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers, but here’s Jay Wright, looking totally exhausted on more than one occasion, always willing to make time for Lesley Van Arsdall and our 11:35 p.m. sports special. It was never coach speak or cliches, either, he always acted like he gave a shit and took time to consider the questions we asked, questions he had probably answered 15 times already.
I can respect that, for sure. Here’s a guy who has always exuded class and been a fine ambassador for the region:
Much respect to @CoachBeardTTU and @TexasTechMBB – best defensive team we have played all year ! Congrats on a great season !
— Jay Wright (@VUCoachJWright) March 25, 2018
We are incredibly honored to have shared the court with that physically and mentally tough @WVUhoops team – Much respect to @CoachHuggs and the Mountaineers
— Jay Wright (@VUCoachJWright) March 24, 2018
When it comes to blemishes on Wright and his program, there’s pretty much nothing out there. There was a phone card “scandal” way back in 2003 where a bunch of guys made calls using someone else’s telephone access code.
Big deal!
Nova was mentioned briefly in the big NCAA report from a few months back, with three former players alleged to have received loan payments after they left the program. From what I understand, it’s another “nothing burger,” as that guy on CNN once said.
That’s about it. I can’t find anything else, nor do I remember anything else they’ve done wrong.
The players
Let’s take a look at recent rosters to see if we can find any Grayson Allen types:
Jalen Brunson – nah
Ryan Arcidiacono – nah
Kyle Lowry – nah
Randy Foye – nah
Scottie Reynolds – nah
I think back to the last 10 or 15 years of Big East basketball and a lot of villains come to mind – Carl Krauser, Eric Devendorf, Herb Pope – the list goes on and on.
But not once during that time period did I really dislike anyone from Nova. Allan Ray? Mike Nardi? Dante Cunningham? Darrun Hilliard? I didn’t hate any of those guys, not nearly as much as whoever Pitt or UConn or Georgetown was rolling out. Every time you saw Villanova on the schedule it was like, “ah, these guys are good, they’re a pain in the ass,” but playing the Wildcats never brought forth the abhorrence I felt when going up against Rick Pitino or Jim Calhoun or DeJuan Blair.
Some people wanna point to Nova as being a snooty Main Line school with entitled undergrads or something, but is it even really that bad? Yea, tuition is $52,000, but Penn ain’t much different. Yea, some Villanova types are rich, boat-shoe wearing Avalon vacationers, but so what? There are plenty of places to find elitists in this area. Take a drive over to Society Hill or Moorestown or Alapocas and it’s the same thing. I’ve lived long enough to know that douchebags come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and comments sections.
Now, some people like to go down the road of, “well, Villanova isn’t in Philadelphia, so it’s not a Philadelphia school!”
Right, so let’s do some geography.
Using City Hall as a central location, Nova’s campus is about 13 to 14 miles from center city if you’re taking a straight-ish shot down Lancaster Avenue:
Yea, it’s outside the city limits, but it’s really not that far. Saint Joe’s and La Salle are six miles from City Hall, so we’re really going to split hairs over a difference of eight whole miles?
Plus, when you go down the list of professional and college sports teams, you find all sorts of similar geographic snafus:
The New York Giants and New York Jets do not play in New York
The Buffalo Bills don’t play in Buffalo
The Washington Redskins don’t play in Washington
The Philadelphia Union don’t play in Philadelphia
The Dallas Cowboys don’t play in Dallas
The Detroit Pistons don’t play in Detroit
And the San Francisco 49ers sure as hell don’t play in San Francisco:
If you want to be more technical about it, the United States government’s Office of Management and Budget divides the country into 382 metropolitan statistical areas, defined by “one or more adjacent counties or county equivalents that have at least one urban core area of at least 50,000 population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties.”
Philly-Camden-Wilmington is the 7th largest MSA in the United States and is known to us… uh… the Delaware Valley, a region extending from Elkton all the way up to the Trenton border. Villanova University, Talen Energy Stadium, the new Sixers Field House, and pretty much everything “Philly sports” related falls into that greater catchment area.
So, no, Villanova is not “in Philadelphia,” but there are plenty of Eagles fans from Norristown, Medford, and Hockessin. Are they not qualified to be Eagle fans? The whole thing is DUMB.
North Philly native Kyle Lowry agrees, and touches on the topic in a recent Players’ Tribune story:
“Loyalty is everything in Philadelphia. I’m always going to be proud to be a Philadelphia native. Fly Eagles Fly. Let’s go Phillies. Let’s go Flyers. The 76ers … I mean, I’m obviously not rooting for them. But the point still stands.
It’s a great feeling to be able to represent your college and your city in big games. It’s great to have been a part of a program that changed the culture of the entire university. We worked hard, and we earned our place among the NCAA’s elite a long time ago. We’re not letting go anytime soon.
Some people will just never accept it. Some people will keep telling you that even though the perception might have changed, the geography is always going to be the same.”
And even if you’re resigned to the idea that Nova is some elite Main Line school, look at the guys on their roster. You’ve got kids from Archbishop Wood, Salesianum, and Neumann-Goretti wearing the jersey. Mikal Bridges went to public school at Great Valley. The son of the 76ers President earned a roster spot as a walk-on. I can get behind that.
I would hope that other Philadelphia sports fans can cheer for those guys and those stories. And I’d hope that Villanova fans would reciprocate if the tables were turned. I’d hope Lamarr Kimble and Shizz Alston and Darnell Foreman would get some love from Wildcat nation if they were playing for a national title.
If you went to Temple or Saint Joe’s or whatever, I get it. I wouldn’t go gung-ho for the Marshall Thundering Herd in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl, but I’d like to see West Virginia native John Holliday win it. For the same reason, I wouldn’t mind seeing Lowry win a ring with the Raptors.
And I’d prefer to see Villanova win it all tonight, again. I don’t think it matters if you went to Nova or didn’t go to Nova, or whether or not the school is in Philly or outside of Philly. I see an elite program with a classy coach and classy players who do things the right way and play lights-out basketball.
I find it hard to root against that.

Today the World Monuments Fund (WMF) announced the 2018 World Monuments Watch, listing 25 at-risk sites. Threatened by climate change, conflict, natural disasters, and preservation resource limitations, they range from modernist architecture to whole regions wrecked by hurricanes and earthquakes.
The Watch was launched in 1996 and is released every two years, its list organized by a panel of heritage experts from around the world, including specialists in architecture, archaeology, art history, and preservation. “By building an international coalition, the World Monuments Watch protects both the sites themselves and the shared history they embody,” Joshua David, president and CEO of WMF, stated in a release. He added that these sites “are where we come together as citizens of the world and renew our commitments to justice, culture, peace, and understanding.”

This 2018 edition has a particular focus on modernist structures, which can pose preservation challenges due to their porous concrete forms and often purpose-built architecture, whose heroic shapes can be difficult to adapt to new purposes. Furthermore, they are frequently too new to qualify for local historic listing and protection. For instance, the Hall of Nations in Delhi, India, pictured at the top of this post, was erected for the 1972 International Trade Fair and was torn down this April.
There remains more post-independence architecture in Delhi that’s in danger of being lost. These structures are joined by the Sirius Building in Sydney, Australia, a Brutalist high-rise of public housing from the 1970s whose future is in limbo, and the 1960s concrete Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium in Takamatsu, Japan, where a new sports facility’s construction puts rehabilitation into question. Meanwhile, sites related to the Civil Rights Movement in the Southern United States are also listed, as they can lack protection resources; WMF highlights homes, churches, and community spaces in Alabama that were central to organization and action.
Other themes for the 2018 Watch include “disaster response,” concentrating on sites in the Caribbean and Mexico recently hit by storms and earthquakes, as well as Amatrice, Italy, which was almost completely destroyed by a 2016 earthquake. Meanwhile, the Blackpool Piers in the United Kingdom are being damaged by rising sea levels attributed to climate change, and the al-Hadba’ Minaret in Mosul, Iraq; the Souk in Aleppo, Syria; the Old City of Ta’izz in Yemen; and the Sukur Cultural Landscape in Nigeria, are all in tumultuous conflict zones.
Below are a few of the 25 sites on the 2018 World Monuments Watch. The full list is available on the WMF site.
