We all pick on ExxonMobil, rightfully so, but I would really like to know what Chevron was up to during this period of time. (Two of Chevron’s “predecessors” were Gulf Oil and Texaco.) I have a feeling that Chevron’s denial and disinformation strategy and and program were as effective as Exxon’s, maybe more so.

Telling their story before a Congressional committee for the first time, two former ExxonMobil scientists on Wednesday detailed how the oil giant turned its back on the research they did for the company 40 years ago on the looming threat of climate change.

They gave their testimony in Washington, D.C., just as Exxon went on trial in New York on allegations that it misled investors about climate change risks, underscoring how political and legal risks have dovetailed for a corporate giant that for years tried to sow doubt about the risks of carbon emissions.

Geochemist Ed Garvey described how Exxon shut down the carbon dioxide research program he worked on for the company from 1978 to 1983.

After the collapse of world oil prices in 1982, Garvey said, "they began to sell off things like lithium battery research and other divisions of Exxon research as they retrenched and focused solely on oil." One of the programs that was jettisoned was his project to monitor carbon dioxide concentrations in the air and ocean surface from a dedicated station aboard one of the company's supertankers.

"There was really a sea change ... where they had gone from this very broad-based, very future-looking energy company to becoming an oil company," Garvey told the hearing, held by the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Subcommittee of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

After deepening the company's understanding of an environmental problem it suspected could harm its business, Exxon put its muscle behind efforts to manufacture doubt about the reality of global warming.

"I cannot see into Exxon management's heart," said physicist Martin Hoffert, describing his distress at the company's newspaper ads in the 1990s contradicting the science on fossil fuel emissions' link to global warming. That work was his focus when he was a consultant to the company from 1981 to 1987."

Whatever its intent—willful ignorance, stymying an effective response to preserve quarterly profits, or simply an incomprehensible refusal to incorporate their own world-class research and results into their business plans," Hoffert said, "what they did was wrong. They deliberately created doubt when their internal research confirmed how serious a threat it was."

Rosto fino, branco, magro, alto e aquele cabelo verde...

Me frustra o fato de que eu não posso ficar com ele. Me enche de tesão também. Tão novo... Não que eu seja muito velha, mas os seis anos de diferença entre a gente pesam. Mesmo assim, não paro de sonhar com ele a noite. Eu sonho com ele e minha calcinha acorda molhada.

Eu me estremeço toda quando ele passa.

Estamos nos cruzando, religiosamente, todos os dias. Essa rua que é a minha casa, aparentemente, é a casa dele também. Eu sei que, quando ele passa, nem me nota. Mas eu, com o coração pulsante, os peitos rijos e uma enorme vontade de tê-lo, fico sozinha, solitária, sonhando.

É difícil não sentir o que eu sinto quando o vejo. Eu acho que eu não sou a única. Mas eu tenho que me conter. Não posso ousar trocar olhares, muito menos tocar aquele corpo.

Lagi lagi belajar, bahwa jika ingin mendapatkan apa yang diinginkan dari orang lain, maka hal pertama yang mesti dilakukan adalah kita harus bisa memberikan hal tersebut kepada orang lain, baik orang yang sama atau secara umum.

Mengapa?

Karena sejatinya kehidupan ini adalah proses aksi=reaksi. Apa yang ditanam, itu yang dituai.

Dalam hal menghargai.

Sebenarnya, kita bisa dihargai oleh orang-orang sekitar asal kita pun mau menghargai mereka; mengucapkan terimakasih, maaf, tolong, adalah sedikit dari cara menghargai seseorang baik yang seumur, lebih dewasa, atau bahkan kepada yang lebih muda.

Namun tatkala kita merasa tidak dihargai, coba pikir kembali, jangan-jangan kita belum bisa menghargai orang lain? Atau mungkin saja itu hanya ada dalam pikiran sendiri kan? Semisal kita merasa tidak didengar, padahal baru sekali, apa benar itu tandanya tidak dihargai? Ya, belum tentu.

Mestilah kita berhati-hati dalam berucap, 'kamu tidak menghargai saya', karena bisa jadi saat itu posisi menjadi berkebalikan, kita yang tidak bisa menghargai jerih payah mereka.

Lagipula apa sih makna menghargai? Adakah harga bagi seseorang?

Menurutku penghargaan diri hanyalah nilai yang dibuat diri sendiri tanpa oranglain tahu pasti harganya berapa. Jika kurang menurutnya, maka kita tidak menghargai, jika sudah lebih tapi tetap saja menurutnya kurang, ya tetap saja dibilang tidak menghargai.

Tunggu, bukankah itu terkesan seperti sesuatu yang egois?

Yap, benar. Pada akhirnya itu semua kembali pada ego masing-masing, seberapa besar ingin dihargai, dihormati. Sekalipun 1000 orang sudah mencium tangannya atau bahkan tunduk padanya, bila egonya bilang, 'ini semua masih kurang', tetap, satu kesalahan akan terhitung tidak menghargai.

Belajar lagi, belajar lagi.

Hidup ini memang isinya untuk belajar, ujian, cobaan, sabar, syukur, belajar lagi, dan seterusnya.

Lalu bagaimana mengontrolnya?

Ingatlah, bahwa jika kita mengharapkan ridho semua manusia, maka kita itu gila! Kenapa? Karena itu adalah suatu ketidakmungkinan.

Cukup karena mencari ridho-Nya, kesalahan kecil atau pun besar dari seseorang maka tidak akan terlalu ambil pusing karena tahu kodrat manusia adalah tempatnya salah. Cukup saling menasihati dalam tenang, maka insyaallah apa yang dari hati akan sampai ke hati. Cukup mengatakan, 'jangan begitu lagi', maka penerimaan akan lebih besar.

Lagi-lagi, manusia memang tempatnya salah. Bahkan manusia terbaik pun pernah Allah tegur melalui firman-Nya, apalagi kita yang bukan siapa-siapa ini? Tugas kita hanyalah meminimalisasi kesalahan, jika sudah terjadi, istighfar. Mohon ampun pada Allah. Dengan demikian, hati lebih tenang dan ikatan antar hati manusia pun insyaallah akan lebih tenang.
