2023 has been a year unlike any other in sport.

Records were broken, torches were passed, movements were started and tears were shed as fans experienced every emotion possible.

Here’s a look back at the biggest stories this year from all over the sporting world.

January

Ezra: Month 1 of Animal Crossing New Horizons!

Hello all! I’m here to tell my journey of the first month of New Horizons on Cillia Island!

There’ll be lots of pictures! I hope you enjoy! Future updates will probably be daily because this is... long at first... but I promise it slows down!

This post covers 32 days (skipping a few). It is indented to be a fun, long, read! I’ll say it’s a 10-15 minute read just to be on the longer side!

Thursday, March 19th, 4pm -7GMT. The virus is present, but just starting. I have been home for not even 24 hours of my job that was supposed to keep me out of town all March. I make a phone call to a local Gamestop, asking if they’re still open, and how the midnight release of Animal Crossing is going to work. The worker tells me I can go pick it up right then, because they’re going to be closing early and had JUST gotten a phone call from corporate that they could give it out early - you can assume what I did /immediately/ after lol.

Starting was incredibly easy! I’ve had my dead name as my New Leaf Mayor forever, and I loved that city name so Ezra and Cillia it was! And we began! My starting villagers were Cherry and Roald with Cherry Trees (fitting!), and I said I wasn’t gonna restart no matter what... so here we go!

I picked a town that had a West Beach River Mouth as well as a South River Mouth - which matched my town in New Leaf! (The south exit, and the flow of the river - but the west exit would be where my original upper waterfall was so the shape was the same). Picked northern hemisphere (where I am). And placed my house right in a river bend (with the initial plan to section me off into my own island within an island!). Cherry and Roald’s homes were placed along the west-running river right at the top, with not much effort or forethought. Not that it was a bad thing! I knew they wouldn’t be permanent villagers, but wanted to give them some beautiful scenery while they were here.

I can definitely tell that I’m still acting and thinking like a mayor even thought I’m only an island rep. ... this doesn’t change bwahaha!

Day 1 March 19th, was all setup and prep for our REAL day 1! Blathers already was about to have a decent encyclopedia, and I was getting nook miles left and right - already expecting a house instead of a tent the next day. I wasn’t too surprised, I’ve done this song and dance before, and I’m just here to have a great time in my island paradise! Getting Blathers was definitely my highest priority!

Day 2 March 20th, was... difficult... giving 15 things to Blathers one at a time and finding 30 iron for the Nooklings was excruciating lol - but getting fossils and a pole vault to absolutely DECIMATE the weed ecosystem filled me with a glee that I’m sure you can understand. I managed to upgrade my house, get Blathers and Nooks Cranny all in one day *whew*. Now, time to have some fun!

I build my first QR code which was a cool outfit I called PRIDE Coat! It is a black coat with drawstrings and pockets on the front - a lil’ trans flag on the left arm, a bi flag on the right arm, and my (pretty decent!) attempt at a rainbow of paint (in the gay flag colors) falling down my back! And I made an Iwatobi Swim Club Beanie to match the one I wear every day!!

I then played with my Passport a bit to have my title be “Future Fish” which is Free! Eternal Summer (the second season’s) Ending Song!!!! Which I thought was SUPER cute and VERY me. (It’s my second fave anime. I plan on making a Reigisa outfit in the future!!).

Already by the end of Day 2 I had my hair customization options, the tool wheel, and the DIY that I needed to buy. Everything Nook was offering I managed to get my grubby little day 2 hands on! So you KNOW my hair went to pink pigtails IMMEDIATELY. And took /many/ photos. But since my outfits are all the same just imagine the ones you just saw but with pink instead of blonde!

With that it was time to get my 3 villagers that would accompany Cherry and Roald (This correlates to getting the iron for Nooklings!) I wanted to grab the first 3 villagers that I saw just to try some new friends this go around - as I had already planned on making my New Leaf family my permies! So my first three were Ketchup (nice!), Hornsby (Aww!!), and... GALA!?!?

Well how convenient! That was one permie immediately out of the way!! Welcome back, Gala!!! So excited to have you on the island!

Then I caught an Oarfish and saw *GASP* WISP!!!! To which, I immediately ran up to him and demanded he bring my girlfriend, Cece the Squirrel, to the island. He, instead, got spooked, had me collect his spirit, and offered me items. *sigh* Ok - can’t get Cece that way - so I decided to sleep!

How naive I was...

Day 3 March 21st, was both good and bad! I had access to Nooklings, but that was about it. Blathers was getting a crowded amount of critters outside his roped off building, but it would be all worth it, tomorrow. But!! I found my first spider island! Which I sold off to Nooklings and happily went to sleep!

Day 4 March 22nd, had SO MUCH to offer! Blathers, Daisy Mae, Harvy, WHEW. Pretty sure I had a visit from Gulliver either today or yesterday, too! Nothing could POSSIBLY ruin this day!!

Oh how wrong.

How so terribly wrong I was.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is an incredible game that lets you invite so many villagers to your island!

All of them. But 14.

14 Villagers from New Leaf are not available. The Sanrio Characters. And the Amiibo Characters.

No Felyne. No Ganon, Epona, Medli, or W. Link. No Viche or Inkwell. No Rilla, Chai, Morty, or Etoille.

No Toby.

No Chelsea.

...

No Cece.

...

To say that I was devastated would be an understatement. I was absolutely crushed. Not only were 3 of my permies out, but the one villager I couldn’t live without, wasn’t allowed in the game. She didn’t even get a poster.

So I did what any crushed lover would do, and made a memoir to her.

And it started raining. Poetic. (I was only cheered up slightly when I got to catch a Coelacanth!) I didn’t do this until much later (April 4th) but for the sake of not talking about her too much, I would open New Leaf and wrote her a goodbye love letter, which, honestly, makes me tear up whenever I read it.

And I went to sleep.

I have nothing for Day 5 other than scanning all my amiibo cards for the POSTERS which are UNDOUBTEDLY my FAVORITE new feature in the game!!

Day 6, March 24th, GALA MOVED IN! I was so excited, and it was definitely needed. My best friend also came over and we goofed off and we met each other’s villagers! Then I went to an island tour and got A PANSY HYBRID ISLAND!!!! OOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I went crazy. Absolutely destroyed that ecosystem. I went full feral. MINE. ALL MINE!!!

And I caught my first Sturgeon!! Which was awesome because I only had the rare fish left in my March collection! Trying to get a Golden Trout, I made many many fish bait, and got the 200 clam achievement! Which was exciting because that unlocked “Mermaid” for titles!! I doubt I’ll change from Future Fish, but Mermaid would be a second pick!

For Day 7 I went to a good friend’s village and desperately tried to make Chiyuki Fujito’s blue dress from Runway de Waratte... it didn’t work... but I like the attempt! (Will send pics in messenger if you’re curious!).

Day 8, March 26th, was the day ISABELLE WAS HERE!!! Welcome to your island paradise, QUEEN. I definitely dressed for the part ;)

This, of course, opened up tunes and flag options! Flag was incredibly easy. It’s going to stay my picture of Cece until she’s added back into the game (which will probably be never, so...)

The tunes was much harder for me. But since I couldn’t think of anything else I made it “SO. NO. CHI. NO. SA. DA. ME.” from the first Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Opening (which is, ironically, what is playing as I type this... SO NO CHI NO SA DA ME <- was written in time with the music playing. Incredible.) It’s definitely not going to be that forever, but for now it makes me giggle!

Nothing for Day 9 except for a SICK tarantula island :) love those furry babes! I also built my campsite! Tomorrow was going to be big!! Who on Earth was going to move in!?

Day 10, March 28th, now, I have what I like to call “chaotic luck”. I’ll catch the bus, but my gosh did I almost miss it. I was absolutely positive I failed that test, and I did, but the question I messed up doesn’t count and I passed! Cece isn’t in the game but do you know who’s at my campsite??

Can you even imagine my face??? Can you IMAGINE the jaw drop?? I moved him next to me IMMEDIATELY.

Day 12, March 30th, I saw kicks for the first time!!! Love that funky newsie skunk!

Day 13, March 31st, I saw Flick for the first time!!! Went on a mad tarantula hunt and made BANK. Fun story, I thought both Flick and C.J. were girls, so when I learned Flick was a boy I was really upset because I thought a canon gay ship was now straight, but WHOOPS they’re BOTH boys! 😎 Nice.

I also saw Celeste for the first time!!! Gosh how I missed her!! I actually sat and got all 200 stars in one night, just because of how much I like wishing on falling stars!!!

Day 14, April 1st, The Nightmare Begins. Love him or Hate him, Zipper was here. I won’t go on about the eggs. Everyone talks about the eggs. They sucked, fishing was a nightmare, not a big fan. I would end up not getting all the sakura DIYs which was very upsetting (but I’ll just get them next year). In INCREDIBLE news I got a golden trout!!! Which was the last thing I needed in my March encyclopedia - and it was on to April hunting! Every night thing I could get, I did! So I decided to set up my last 4 houses, and focus on getting K.K. Slider finally to my island!

The first house sold naturally to Pecan! NICE! I love squirrels so much! She was very welcome!

Day 15, April 2nd, in the interest in getting new villagers, I went on a tour and there she was: MERENGUE! She’s, truthfully, not a favorite of mine. She’s SO cute, but not someone I wanted permanently. However, she’s my other best friend’s FAVORITE and she doesn’t have a switch. So, there was NO WAY I wasn’t taking Merengue onto my island. I haven’t sent my friend pics, yet, but I hope I can soon!! She’s gonna be so happy!

Today was the first day I met C.J. which... stunning. Absolutely jaw dropping. I’m SMITTEN with a TAKEN BEAVER. He calls me fashionista. Asks about my anglersona. Takes selfies of/with me. He’s truly the ideal. I’d invite him back any day!

Over the next 3 days, Freya and Bruce move in as my last 2 villagers giving us a grand starting total of: Cherry, Roald, Ketchup, Hornsby, Gala, Raymond, Pecan, Merengue, Freya, and Bruce! Not bad not bad!

Day 19, April 6th, THE BEST GIRL IS HEEERE. LABEL CAME TO MY TOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME. I might have cried, honestly. I cannot believe someone that incredible would want to come to my island. She asked for me to give her an official look. Are you kidding me? Easy breezy. For my perfect outfit she rewarded me a Label Hat. Oh? DESIGNER? I was awestruck. The design was IMPECCABLE. The flavor was IMMACULATE.

One of my villagers also happened to gift me a Pink SPRITE COSTUME??? I, honestly, have never been more in love with an outfit in my entire life??? A pink Peter Pan outfit??? LEGENDARY.

Day 20, April 7th, I don’t quite remember what day K.K. Slider visited the island when I hit my 3 star rating - so we’ll say it was today lol. That meant ISLAND EDITING, but I didn’t know what to do, yet, so I didn’t worry too much about it!

Label’s hat came in MORE COLORS in the store today. YOU BET I bought all of them. The talent. But this meant that I had a pink hat to match my pink sprite costume and you bet I was LIVING my best life. I had also finished the Anklyosaurus which is my FAVORITE dinosaur so I was LIVING it up.

Later, Ketchup would approach me and ask to move. I was happy for her to explore new lands and bid her farewell, and gave her a sweet goodbye. With that, it was hunting time, and I found the perfect villager that would set everything in motion.

Day 22, April 9th, Label VISITS AGAIN!!!!!! Unfortunately, she asked for a sporty look, which I couldn’t pull off perfectly :/ So no new item from her... but my OUTFIT WAS FIRE AND WE WERE MAD CUTE TOGETHER.

Day 23, April 10th, the villager has moved in, the cryptid gyroid herself, COCO!!!

And her moving in gave me a BRILLIANT idea. I’d like to keep it under wraps for now, but I’m so, so, SO happy she’s here!

Day 24, April 11th, The Fishing Tourney. The Summer tourney will be significantly easier for me, now that I know you can double your points by fishing with someone else, but it took me HOURS to collect all the clams and get to 300 points. It wasn’t really worth it, but I love fish so much so I wasn’t going to miss a SINGLE thing. I got that gold trophy and I’m SO proud of myself.

Day 25, April 12th, With a golden trophy in hand and the last day of eggies, I was feeling really confident. I had the means and the idea to change cliffs + water for a couple days and just... made what my brain came up with! I’ll keep this vague for now, because I’m really excited about the final results! Just know that everyday I edit a little bit more and come up with more ideas!

Day 26, April 13th, Happy Homestuck, Neil Bangs out the Tunes, and Thomas Sanders goes to the Wedding Day!! And it did NOT disappoint. Label for A 3RD TIME!!! She must like me as much as I like her >w<!! Today she gave out her cap!!! It’s, honestly, not my thing, I’d rather stick with the brim hats, but I do think they’re cute!! So I would buy them all the next day! The Able Sister’s haul on Day 27 was oh my gosh amazing!!! They had the cap, of course, but they also had THE OTHER SPRITE COSTUMES!! Which I bought all of them. And now I wear, near exclusively, this outfit in 5 different colors bwahaha!

Day 30, April 17th, I got my first golden item!!! The slingshot! Nice! Over the past few days, I’ve just been designing, moving houses, and building ramps! Learning new myth debunks, stuff like that!

I was also blessed with 3 encounters :OOOO I didn’t know this was even POSSIBLE!?

Day 31, April 18th, Disaster Strikes. I’ve been moving so many homes that I didn’t consider that a villager couldn’t move in because you were already doing a home thing for the day. So when I went to invite camper Gonzo to my town he declined!? I was devastated. He was SO cute and I thought he could move into Bruce’s house to keep the peace of personalities! I think he’s someone in the future who I’ll ask for a poster of or ask for an amiibo card of! I know I’m going to check the campsite first before moving any buildings from here on out! D’:

Day 32, April 19th, one month from the day I started. I’ve been having the TIME of my life! There’s definitely been some ups and downs, but I have a goal in mind and it’s keeping me so focused! I organized an entire flower field today!! Due to a turnip mishap, I happen to be 2 days ahead of everyone, but I have been good about time traveling other than that. This means that I am fortunate enough to get my Nooklings upgrade 2 days early and they’ll be open tomorrow!!! I’m... I’m so excited!!! I NEED more flower seeds!!!!!!!

The future looks incredibly bright on Cillia island, and I cannot wait to hear about everyone else’s month!!

NFLYING - Replying with certainty to their sold out tour across Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo, “Just a little, Budokan is starting to come into our sights.”

On June 7th, the 4 unit rock band from Korea NFLYING held their ‘N.Flying 2019 LIVE IN JAPAN -BROTHERHOOD-’ concert in Shinkiba Studio Coast, Tokyo. It was a concert accompanying the release of their 1st Japanese Album Brotherhood on May 22nd. Included in this album was a Japanese version of the Korean chart-topping Rooftop, which gave them a huge breakthrough. Following this, their first Japanese tour saw huge success, selling out across all 3 performances including Diamond Hall in Aichi and Big Cat in Osaka.

Additionally, the 1st album commemorative release events held in Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo simultaneous to their tours also finished with great success. On the last day, the event was held on basement 1F of Tower Records Shibuya. However, the line stretched from 9F to basement 3F, and pushed the scheduled finishing time back by 4 hours. Despite this, the members greeted fans with warm smiles from start to finish, and received overflowing praise on twitter for ‘incredible service for 9 hours.’

During interviews for their album Brotherhood, the members would eagerly say things like ‘we’re happy to be able to hold concerts’ and ‘we hope to hold a concert soon.’ Even during this live, they said ‘we’re happy to be able to hold concerts’. The shared this happiness with a full-house of fans, who filled Studio Coast to the fullest capacity in its history. In this place, everyone became one through music and it became a night of shared happiness.

NFLYING is the ‘Cinderella Story’ of the 2019 Korean music industry. Soon after the new year, they released Rooftop. After finishing its (promotional) activities, steadily there was an increase in word-of-mouth. Approximately a month and a half after its release, the song began its chart reversal. It was the first time they had acquired the number 1 spot. In March, in an unusual move, they restarted their promotional activities and also claimed their first number 1 spot on broadcast. As the current ‘hot stars’, the passion of the fans who had been waiting impatiently was also tremendous. As soon as the opening SE (sound effects) began to play, the fans raised their fists while screaming ‘Waah!’. The members were greeted by this as they entered (the stage).

In this concert was: Lee Seunghyub (Vo, Rap), Cha Hun (Gt), Kim Jaehyun (Dr), Yoo Hweseung (Vo), accompanied by their senior, FTISLAND’s Lee Jaejin to support them as (guest) bassist. Upon entering the stage, Seunghyub screamed ‘What’s up Tokyo? Make some noise!’ before they began to play The World is Mine and Lupin from Brotherhood in quick succession. The richness and overwhelming quick rhythm from the twin vocals had the audience’s hands stretching toward the stage. It was also likely the first time for them (NF) to feel this sense of unity being born right from the start.

Within their setlist they showcased all of their songs from the album Brotherhood, while also weaving in their teppan* (?) songs. As has become the norm since Hweseung joined, during the concert they also performed an elaborate collection of songs arranged into an ‘NFLYING style’ in a mash-up medley.

*(Could mean like ‘tasting platter’ teppan style. Meaning short snippets of songs of their choosing)

This time they also showcased a Queen Medley, which was uploaded to their dedicated Japanese Youtube channel (opened in February). Imitating Freddy Mercury, Hweseung picked up the mic stand and announced ‘there’s something I want to do.’ He had fun doing the ‘eeeh oh’ call-and-response from the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with the fans on the floor.

While wearing black hats, they also performed a Michael Jackson Medley which was prepared specifically for this tour. Hweseung said, ‘Covers are fun, so I want to study them.’ However, he has (already) been showcasing covers of Japanese songs including ones from Aimyon and Yonezu Kenshi in his ‘Try to Sing’ series on his Youtube channel. As a vocalist, Hweseung’s skill, range and expressiveness added to NFLYING seems to have allowed the band to gain musical freedom.

Additionally, Seunghyub who is a vocalist alongside Hweseung, will (in future) not have to focus only on vocals, but can also rap. With Seunghyub the vocals are rich, and the NFLYING-like ‘mixture sound’ is established. The twin vocals are NFLYING’s greatest weapon. Seunghyub, who was on piano during Run, Heal the World and the Michael Jackson Medley, then acoustic guitar for Delight, is a man of many talents. As the main songwriter for Brotherhood and the writer/composer of the huge hit song Rooftop, Seunghyub is displaying the results of his blossoming musical talents.

Then there is the guitarist who unveils his hardcore guitar (skills) Hun, who greatly respects Slash (Guns N’ Roses) and Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge). Also Jaehyun who, although he is a drummer, is the charming mood maker who draws your attention within songs. While watching the concert, just like the title of the album Brotherhood, the strength of the member’s relationship lies in their musical bond. Through this, I feel as they have been pushed into a higher stage.

From the time of their Rooftop activities, they became a 4 member band. In regards to this, Hun said, “I’ve always wanted to say this. I’m sorry for always causing you to worry. At the beginning of this year we had a big turning point. We, who were always chasing after our dreams together like brothers came apart. Our hearts hurt. The more I thought of everyone who was always cheering us on, the more painful it was. However, your voices saved us.”

He was met with loud applause.

“We wish to repay you with great music and great concerts.” He conveyed his gratitude to the fans.

This time, the empty bass position was filled by Jaejin, a veteran who is in his 12th year since debut. He plays with live-band veteran FTISLAND, and playing with NFLYING this time, I expect they also gained something from him.

“Is there anything we can do to repay you for this?” Jaehyun asked Jaejin in regards to the matter.

To which Jaejin proposed, “We have FNC Kingdom right? Our (FTISLAND’s) vocalist will need to leave us (for army enlistment), however me, Seunghyun (Gt) and Minhwan (Dr) will be performing. Because I helped you out this time, please help us out next time. With that, we’ll be even.”

It seems the brotherhood between FTISLAND and NFLYING will deepen at FNC Kingdom.

From the middle of the stage, came their newest Korean song Spring Memories. It was their first time using acoustic guitars for their (lead) promotional track. As they played this gentle song, loud fan-chants rose from the venue.

The final stage opened with Delight, with Hweseung singing lyrics which conveyed their thanks, and which spoke of the red, star-like lights from the fans which connect NFLYING and NFIA. They performed their Korean debut song Awesome as well as other nostalgic songs.

During their MC section, a surprise announcement was made to their fans. They announced that they were to release a Japanese single in November, and perform their first hall concerts in Nakano Sun Plaza across two days.

Hun revealed excitedly “We’ve started preparing the music and there will be a double title track. Our commemorative release event will be held at Nakano Sunplaza. We’re finally able to perform in halls!”

Seunghyub added reverently, “It’s thanks to all of you that we were able to ascend those stairs. Just a little, Budokan is coming into our sights. Will you keep an eye on our dream with us? For as long as I live, I will never forget this day. Stand by you! Stand by me! Please remain by our side from now on too!” before launching into the lead track of the album Stand by Me.

Matching the rhythm of the drums, calls of ‘Hey!’ rose from the floor as a sudden sense of unity rose for Endless Summer.

To finish, Seunghyub blew a kiss into the audience and said, “We decided on this song for our final song. You gifted us with 1st place, and it was with this song that we were reborn. Your support connects to our current and future dreams. Thank you so much!”

As he conveyed his gratitude, they started singing Rooftop -Japanese ver-, with the audience singing along passionately. They brought it to a close as one, with the highest tension of the day.

During the encore, Hweseung said, “Because you all requested it, today there is one (an encore). From now on, please continue to shine your red lights on us.”

Jaehyun: “When we were the opening act for our seniors, the lights from the audience seemed to float like stars in the universe. Today, I was able to witness NFLYING’s universe. Please continue to exist in NFLYING’s sparkling universe from now on too.”

Hun: “Even if we perform in bigger venues, the image of our first live in Shibuya Cyclone (a venue with 300 capacity) in 2013, remains in my heart. I hope to grow without forgetting my original intentions.”

Seunghub: “I’ve said that in Nagoya and Osaka we wished to convey our power to you. However, instead we received power from you. We want to become a force to be reckoned with.“

One by one they expressed their gratitude. Lastly, the supporting Jaejin also spoke.

“So that NFLYING can become an amazing band from here on out, please give them lots of love,” he conveyed warmly to the fans.

After finishing all 3 songs in the encore Leave It, Fall With You and Songbird, everyone gathered in the centre of the stage. However, for a second time, voices called loudly for an ‘encore’ without stopping.

Seunghyun said in bewilderment as everyone gathered to discuss, “This is a new situation…but if we can stay on stage longer, it makes me happy.”

They played a double encore with Stand by Me. From the audience, shouts of joy sounded, once again showing incredible excitement. Hweseung turned his mic to the audience and shouted echoingly with great strength, as if his happiness were about to explode. Seunghyub gave a thumbs up and said “You’re the best!”

When they all gathered for the final time in the centre of the stage, they gave their final greetings without a mic. “This was NFLYING!”

Having done this, they all gathered around the supporting Jaejin and hugged him in gratitude.

NFLYING began indie activities in Japan in 2013, and have doggedly persevered for 6 years to reach where they are today. They were able to put out a concert overflowing with passionate emotions. However, here, I was able to witness their gratitude to their fans and the member’s strong brotherhood with each other. Looking back in the coming years, I believe this concert will have become a milestone.

New year, new music remained more true than ever this past week. UK dub esoteric and in-demand producing extraordinaire James Blake kept us awake with his insomniac love, PUP continued to find growth and life-affirmation through their nihilistic punk sing-a-longs with the kids, Maren Morris reaffirmed our faith in her GIRL power with her first preview off her highly anticipated sophomore effort, Tamaryn brought rage to her dreamy art pop, and Los Angeles noiseniks HEALTH refined the strangeness in their sound. Bubbling up from the underground and rising, we got promising glimpses in the futures of righteous rablerouser Stella Donnelly, cosmic soothsayer SPELLLING, folk duellist Bellows, and synth stylist Liam Benzvi. The latest Recommended Listen also came from Deerhunter’s latest album, which reminds us that their best days have yet to disappear. There's more where that came from with new music from pop and punk eclecticism alike.

Here’s the best of the rest from the week of January 13th, 2019…

Ariana Grande - “7 rings” [Republic Records]

The huge year Ariana Grande had in 2018 is going to get even bigger in the new year. To date, the pop superstar will be embarking on a massive tour behind last year’s great Sweetener, is slated to headline Coachella (and maybe even Lollapalooza, too...,) and has another album on the way that’s already shaping up to be one of the finest breakup reclamation narratives in pop culture. It’s tentatively titled thank u, next, after one of last year’s best songs, period, and more recently gave to us the sensually soulful ballad “Imagine”. “7 Rings” joins the two as potential album cuts, with this listen shifting gears into full-on fun mode where over an interpolation of the melody from The Sound of Music’s “My Favorite Things”, Grande mean mugs about retail therapy and being able to pay for it all of her own dime. Its video, again directed by Hannah Lux Davis, is similarly luxurious, as we watch Grande and her BFFs flaunt her 1% status up in a neon pink penthouse playing around with more money and high-end material possessions than any of us will ever see even if we lived ten of our own lifetimes.

Cass McCombs -“The Great Pixley Train Robbery” [ANTI-]

Vagabond songwriting rebel Cass McCombs will release his ninth studio effort Tip of the Sphere on February 8th, and it’s building its way up to be yet another impressive showcase of the prolific wordsmith’s artistry, with early singles “Sleeping Volcanoes” and “Estrella” culling style cues from worldly musical influences that add even more layers to his detailed storytelling. Though its latest advance listen “The Great Pixley Train Robbery” may find less culture beyond the American songbook to be heard, within the context, it makes sense that its tone is that of a brambling, country-friend bar burner: It’s McCombs’ homage to the actual Pixley Train Robbery of 1889, in which a bandwagon of masked robbers hijacked a train, stole thousands of dollars, and made off into the sunset on horseback. When McCombs relives those moments through song, there’s no shortage of full color danger and adventure. His version of it will hopefully take him on the road much more safely later this spring.

Dark Blue - “Waterford Crystal” [12XU]

Andy Nelson may physically be at CEREMONY’s Home Sick 2 festival this weekend, but there are moments in time when his spirit gravitates into another dimension of punk with his gothly, political project Dark Blue, the Philly trio that also includes John Sharkey III of morbid post-punkers Clockcleaner and Mike Sneeringer of Purling Hiss. Of all the sounds this collective encounter in their work elsewhere, Dark Blue materializes itself through Sharkey’s handsomely maudlin vocals, sharp riffs that coil around the gloomy melancholia of Brit-pop and the singed edges of ‘70s post-punk if they were to be swallowed whole by a shoegaze orb. On February 22nd, they’ll be releasing their third studio effort Victory Is Rated, which boasts a curious sax guest spot from Philly scene kingpin Kurt Vile. First single “Waterford Crystal” isn’t that song, but it definitely rumbles through the speakerboom with a debonair shimmer in their sad-eyed rock theatrics. In a very punk move, Dark Blue plans to celebrate the release by playing only one show, which goes down March 1st at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus.

Gauche - “Conspiracy Theories” [Merge Records]

2019 seems to be the year in which punks are out here making what noise they can with what little free time they have while pulling double duty in other projects than the ones they’re primarily known for. The latest making their visibility known in the fray is that of Gauch, a D.C. post-punk outfit featuring Downtown Boys’ Mary Jane Regalado and Jason P Barnett alongside Priests’ Daniele Yandel and a rotating cast of friends, who’ve since signed with Merge and will be releasing their proper debut full-length later this year. Their latest single “Conspiracy Theories” is a standalone listen that serves as the perfect introduction to what they’re all about through up-front politicized matters in their lyrics slung over a nervous, yet linear wriggle of guitar riffs angling their way around brass splashes. "I hate/ conspiracy theories/ Alex Jones / I hate you too,” goes one lin. When you take into account that many within the D.C. punk scene have first-hand experience with seeing the worst of them play out in real life, their ire is more than deserved. Alex Szantos directed its very DIY, VHS-quality performance clip that makes the most out of party streamers and the color palette despite what dark clouds hover over the world these days.

Makthaverskan - “Demands” [Run for Cover Records]

Last week saw the long awaited and very welcome return o Swedish shoegazing punk band Westkust after a four year of silence from the point of delivering one of 2015′s best albums in their debut Last Forever. The band, which features two members of their more active post-punks counterparts Makthaverskan, is being followed on their heels with new music from that end, with the announcement that Makthaverskan will be releasing a 7″ single on January 25th. It features two tracks in “Demands”and “Onkel”, which the band revealed through a facebook post were initially recorded during the same sessions that brought us their solid 2017 effort Ill, but “didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the material,” hence coupling them together as their own stand-alone. Given that Ill found the four-piece dabbling in the cavernous echoes in their signature sparkle of post-punk, its A-side “Demands” rekindles fire with the illuminated rush. “Try to see through my eyes / No longer care for your demands / No time to catch up my mind / I am so tired of your advice,” Maja Milner’s sky-high vocals aim for the cosmos. When she’s seeing clearly, she and Makthaverskan never cease to scale new heights.

Panda Bear - “Token” [Domino Records]

Plenty of listeners are feeling wistful this year over the 10 year anniversary of Animal Collective’s indie opus Merriweather Post Pavilion, yet sometimes-member Noah “Panda Bear” Lennox has been steadily looking toward the future of his own art ever since. His latest effort Buoys, due out on February 8th, is opening a new chapter within his own story following the trilogy of adulting avant pop bliss that was 2007′s Person PItch, 2011′s Tomboy and 2015′s Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper. While it does sound like the nautical breeze within Lennox’s music will never truly cease passage (titing his latest album Buoys alongside its lead single “Dolphin” are proof of that,) finding new pockets for his voice to explore within minimalist textures and low voltage experimentation amid his wonky nature suits his sound comfortably on its latest listen “Token”. The listen’s accompanying video, starring and directed by UK electronic composer Dean Blunt, is about rediscovering joy in the everyday after a series of creative setbacks -- Emotions aburst in Panda Bear’s sprite sound.

Xiu Xiu - “Pumpkin Attack On Mommy and Daddy” [Polyvinyl Records]

We can always count on Xiu Xiu to throw a wrench through the current musical landscape, and even themselves for that matter. For the veteran avant et. al outfit’s forthcoming 14th studio effort Girl With the Fruit Basket, due out on February 8th, project mastermind Jamie Stewart and longtime constant Angela Seo were joined by percussion virtuoso Thor Harris and Jordan Geiger inside the studio for their latest deconstruction in experimental noise and pop conjectures. Its first single “Scisssssssors” was an extreme breakdown of that in comparison to the cohesion within 2017′s Forget, with a visual treatment to match its occult oddity. Latest preview, the awesomely-titled “Pumpkin Attack On Mommy and Daddy”, delivers more in the sheer terror sonic department. The track was written by Angela Seo with help from Stewart and Los Angeles performance artist Elliott Reed, and is similarly fucked in its electronic decay overlaid by spoken word outbursts. Seo once again collaborated with Anna Lian Tes to create the listen’s video, which features some new facets of surreal vintage horror themes as its predecessor. Xiu Xiu have also mapped out a huge world tour in support of the new album.

There was an interesting development out Central West way recently, which had its conclusion at the recent Central West RU AGM. When NSW Rugby announced that they were making their Development Officers redundant across the state some questions were raised as to the future development pathways for Rugby in the western part of the state. The question was raised as to just what would be the best Affiliation for Central West Rugby going forward. The incumbent Central West Board decided to make approaches to both NSW Rugby and ACT Rugby to invite both Unions to develop a Community Rugby program to put before the Clubs out west for consideration. Both NSW Rugby and the Brumbies held information sessions across the district with all clubs represented. At the recent CWRU AGM a vote was taken with a narrow decision being made to remain affiliated with NSW Rugby going into 2021. NSW Rugby also announced that they will be establishing a Rugby Center of Excellence in Dubbo. Illawarra Rugby went through a similar but somewhat more intense process some fifteen years ago, going very close to changing affiliations to ACT Rugby. In the end we remained with NSW Rugby and as they say the rest is history. I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering just how different things would be for Illawarra Rugby had the decision to become part of ACT & Southern NSW Rugby been taken all those years ago.

It’s AGM season with meetings going on all over the place. At the recent NSW Country AGM, a good friend of Illawarra Rugby Terry Woodward was awarded a Life Membership of Country Rugby. Terry has been a stalwart of Country Rugby dating back to his days of involvement with Central Coast Rugby as a Player, Coach and Administrator. Terry was a long term Executive Officer of NSW Country having a hand in many NSW Country Carnivals and tours making friends and acquaintances not only across the state but as part of several Cockatoos national tournaments and international trips. Always willing to entertain the group in some way, Terry is very well regarded as an administrator and strong supporter of all that is good about NSW Country Rugby. Well done Terrence.

Speaking of AGM’s the Illawarra AGM was completed last Monday at Vikings Rugby Club. Darin Crofts role as President of Illawarra Rugby was confirmed at the moment with Steve Tresidder returned as Competition Manager, and Dion Miller also elected to the Board for two more Years. All three gentlemen were re-elected unopposed. Several announcements were made in regard to the upcoming season in 2021 with President Crofts confident that we will see a full quota of games in 2021. Following on from the Strategic Planning Meeting held with clubs in October, the Board will be planning for competitions in 1st, 2nd, 3rd Grade and will be striving to establish a Colts and Women’s Competition as well. The season will kick-off on the 20th March with breaks for Easter (2nd to 5th April), a Spare Weekend on the 8th May, with a weekend off also for Country Week on the June Long Weekend 12th-14th June. There will be another Spare Round on the 17th July with the Final Series starting with the Semi’s on 21st/22nd August. Grand Final Day will be 4th September.

The 2021 Season Launch function will be Friday 12th March once again at the City Beach Function Center. Last year’s Launch Luncheon was a great success with plans underway to have some high profile Guest Speakers in attendance again to entertain and inform. Make sure you get your tables together for hopefully another big day. Plans are afoot to try and have an outing for the Illawarriors that evening to kick on to.

For the Wallabies to win this year’s Rugby Championships Trophy they will have to beat the Argentine side by 101 points this week at Bankwest Stadium. It has been a strange tournament with all three teams struggling for consistency across the matches. The All Blacks found some of their rhythm last week to finish well in front of the Pumas but the score-line didn’t do the South Americans justice. Their defensive effort was outstanding with the All Blacks enjoying a huge possession advantage throughout. 2018

The year ended 16 days ago, and I’m late to write about how it was. I’m always late.

January- Girlfriend abroad, went to visit her in Boston for a week. Came back to Medellín, I was living by myself with a roomie (Lina).

February- Girlfriend still abroad. Still living with Lina. Working in an international study agency (was fine). Started going to a emotional trainning (It was hard and so many things of my perceptions changed). Uh, and I told my mom I’m gay! (it went well)

March- Girlfriend still abroad. Still living with Lina. Working in an international study agency (was fine). Kept going to the emotional trainning (feeling amazing). Made new friends. Had a crush in school (I was going crazy cause I felt bad about it but never did something that trespass the limits in my relationship with my girlfriend).

April- Girlfriend still abroad but came to visit for my birthday and our anniversary (as a surprise but I already knew it! social media can tell you so many things). Mom told me that I could come back to live with her and I did (I felt extremely happy and excited). Quit to the international study agency (felt great!). Kept going to the emotional trainning (feeling amazing). Made new friends. Talking less to the crush.

May- Girlfriend still abroad. Living with my mom. Done with first semester of school. No job. Kept doing bici tours sometimes. Kept going to the emotional trainning but was feeling motivated or excited for it any more. Started taking psychotherapy and decided to quit the trainning (first time in my life that I felt proud of myself for making my own decisions).

June- July Girlfriend still abroad but I went to Boston to stay with her for one month and two weeks. We fucked a lot in the beginning, we stopped doing it halfway of my trip (i felt like I was going crazy). We fought a lot. I got drunk two times and in both I started the fights and the nasty behaviour. We travelled to NYC and we had a good time (Ange was upset about Agustina’s presence, sometimes she was rude). I felt jealous about Silvana but I also started to like her and see her as a friend. We almost broke up (I wasn’t feeling good after the NYC trip but I regreted the thought and decided to work things out).

July- Girlfriend still abroad. I came back to Colombia to study. Was feeling good with friends and mom. With my girlfriend we were fighting a lot.

August- Girlfriend still abroad. I broke up with my girlfriend the 22nd (after her telling me that we should buy the next trip tickets, I freaked out and wasn’t feeling excited and that confused me a lot. My feelings were changing and I didn’t know how to process them out. I was feeling sufocated and tired of the fights, I felt like I needed to be alone) We kept talking and one night she send me a message with all of the things that were affecting me. (She wrote my feelings and it, somehow, had a shape and a way to communicate that. I was afraid of telling her those things cause I felt that I would be changing her, but she made me see that it was actually something good, cause those were not things that she wanted to keep in her self) We got back together. ( I felt happy and as sure as I had never felt before). Started working like an English teacher (my boss was an ass and a sweetheart at the same time, more the first than the second thing). My students were amazing as persons, some as students.

September- Girlfriend still abroad. The 1st was my mom’s birthday, she wasn’t in town for us to celebrate it. Our relationship started going down, although I didn’t feel like it (it took sometime for me to see it). Kept working as an English teacher and sometimes doing bici tours. Was doing good in school but not sure about my career. With my psychotherapy I was doing amazing and actually feeling good and calm (I was so happy about it).

October- Girlfriend still abroad. Kept working as an English teacher and sometimes doing the bici tour. Almost done with fourth semester and eager to finish it (I’m sure I don’t want to be a journalist). My mom told me that she wanted me to move out from the house (in a nice and somehow supportive way (Airbnb idea) tho it hit me really hard and felt a huge heartbreak. Emotional health? Still improved and balanced. I decided to come to the US to stay with Jess and Joel for a semester.

November- Girlfriend still abroad. We would fight a lot because I started acting jealous crazy, I was understanding how she felt and why she acted the way she did before I broke up with her (I felt terribly bad for doing what I did but also grateful for having the girlfriend I have) Finished with school by the middle of the semester. Kept going to the psychologist and giving English classes, I also told my boss I wasn’t gonna keep working since the first week of December. Told my mom I was going away (again), she said she didn’t agree with my decision but supported it. Went out with friends and kept myself somehow busy.

December- Girlfriend still abroad. I travelled to the US, first to see my brother (until the 25th), had a big emotional break down for the way my brother and mom handle their relationship (I didn’t think it would hit me this bad) but I also had an amazing Christmas and I got to be Sophia’s godmother!. Travelled with a hangover to Boston. Spent the 25th with my girlfriend and accepted being the nanny of Alice’s kid in July (with a good pay!). We went to Wells, Maine for New Year’s, and we also went to know Portland. We had crazy sex the day we got there. We spent New Year’s together in our Airbnb room (Ange was a little sad but also happy, we did the candles and grapes. I missed my mom).

Janurary- Girlfriend still abroad and I’m abroad now.

Thoughts of the year? I thought nothing big had happened this year, but it actually did.

- I started working to improve my mental health and it worked! (now i’m a mess, but I’m working on it and trying to undestand that is okay to have lows as well as highs)

- My relationship with my mom went from the lowest to the highest, then to the highest to a hurtful one for me (I think for her to); then, oddly, to a good one, but I was gonna travel to the US for six months, it was a little late to change my mind.

- My relationship with my mom has hurt me in so many ways, and also has kept me from doing things that I like to do and to repress things and ways of my personality. I need to learn that my well being can’t depend on it. I need to learn to let go and move on.

- My mom and brother’s relationship is not my responsibility, and if I keep getting in between, I’m gonna lose them both.

- Lina is actually a good match for my brother.

- I love my nephew and niece!

- In my love life... I can’t be a coward, and I’m glad to have a supportive, loving and caring girlfriend, that is a fighter and doesn’t give up easily. Loving someone is hard, crazy hard, it also is being in a relationship; it requiers commitment, understanding, patience, and lots of love.

- I don’t know what I’m gonna do with my life but I should relax or I’m not gonna enjoy the moment.

- Depression is a crazy ass bitch. I can’t let her win.

The Moderna Exhibition at Moderna Museet

Joa Ljungberg and Santiago Mostyn have curated work from nearly forty artists connected to the Swedish art scene. Admission is 150 SEK, and includes admission to the Warhol 1968 exhibit. Admission for students and seniors is 120 SEK.

The Wonderful World of Disney on Ice at Ericsson Globe

The nostalgic songs, the classic characters; it’s a perfect evening of fun for kids and kids-at-heart! Everyone from Mickey Mouse to Rapunzel to Olaf will be there. Tickets for this Disney festivity range from 215 to 490 SEK.

Saturday 5th January

Fire & Ice Evening at Kungsbro Strand 21

Skate your way along the fire-lit track! There will be a grill near the track so that you can refuel with hot dogs. The instructions will be in English, a meal is included (hot dog and soup), and the full tour is about 3 hours long. Pricing is 890 SEK for adults, 490 SEK for youth (8-17), and free for children. CEV European Championship Qualification at Eriksdalshallen

Organ Matinée at Koserthuset

Free Solo at Skandiabiografen

Jimmy Chin co-directs the beautifully done film of Alex Honnold’s free solo ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Honnold’s feat of free soloing this renowned climb has captured global attention.

Emerging Sensation at Reaktorhallen R1, KTH Campus

Enter and become part of this art installati by Malin Bobeck Tadaa. She has created a world underground with smart textiles that change color and respond to touch, with the use of sensors, LEDs, electronics, and astounding creativity. Early bird tickets are 100 SEK; regular tickets are 180 SEK.

TEDxKTH: Non Nobis Solum at Nymble

In this TEDx talk, the speakers will inspire the audience to be the change they want to see. One of the speakers will be Elin Mohlander, an entrepreneur who has co-founded Residus, a company with a focus on creating long-lasting clothes with leftover fabric. Moving away from quick trends in favor of sustainable fashion, her company produces clothes that are both sustainable and chic. Tickets to this TEDx event are 250 SEK for students, and 400 SEK for general admission.

Women’s Wave

On the Women’s March anniversary, this year’s theme is ending violence against women. According to WHO, 1 out of 3 women are subjected to violence during their lifetime. Consider making a sign, joining the march, and supporting women.

Grand Opening Party at Stockholm Brewing Co.

Stockholm Brewing Co. are opening their doors and offering a cellar tour. Included at the new location is the FARM Restaurant and Bar, offering local and organic food to go with the brews.

Tuesday 22nd January

Ella Mai at Berns Salonger

Ella Mai performed on The X Factor in 2014 as part of a trio. The group broke up soon afterward, and Ella Mai started writing and singing on her own. DJ Mustard found Mai’s talent through Instagram clips, and now her song “Boo’d Up” has reached the Billboard Hot 100. Tickets are 380 SEK.

Saturday 26th January

GORE-TEX Winter Run at Skansen

This event is both for people who have already discovered the joy of running in the winter, and those who want to check it out. The event will be fun, with contests (who has the best light up costume), and two different courses (5 KM and 10 KM). The earlier you sign up for this event, the cheaper it is.

Free Photographer’s Branch Opening at Kulturhuset

For the third year, Kulturhuset will present photographs from 50 people, ranging from professional photographers to beginners. The exhibit opens Saturday 26th January, and closes Sunday 17th February. The opening event is free and features a DJ. Ordinary price to the exhibit is 40 SEK; the exhibit is always free on Mondays.

Chelsea Cutler at Nalen

This singer/songwriter started out by blending songs from different genres and releasing her covers on Soundcloud. She went on a national tour supporting Quinn XCII, and is now on a tour of her own. Tickets are 220 SEK.

Cirkus Cirkör: Epifónima at Dansens Hus

In this piece, with a title originating from the Greek word for exclamation, seven female circus artists perform pieces that they have created together. The seven women originate from Greece, Canada, Palestine, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland. Tickets range from 275 to 440 SEK.

The Last Testament at Fotografiska

Garcia’s exhibit highlights her interest in performance, psychoanalysis, and politics. Garcia uses film, drawing, text, and performance to explore the questions “What is truth?” and “Who is telling the truth?” Regular admission is 100 SEK, and free for everyone on Fridays.

Jenny Nyström at Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum

Jenny Nyström was a pioneer in Sweden. She made her profession in children’s book illustrations; one of the first to do so. In this exhibit, about 100 works of Nyström’s appear, ranging from her time at the Academy to some of her last illustrations. This exhibit closes mid-February. General admission to Sven-Harrys is 120 SEK.

The Great Gatsby Cruise

12th February 2016: The couple are seen getting close at an Adele concert, aka the best date location ever. A fellow concert-goer tells the Mail Online that the pair were in "high spirits" and kissed more than once. "At certain points Orlando would give Katy a peck on the lips but then would just carry on enjoying Rolling In The Deep," said the source.

24th February 2016: ET reports that the two are on holiday in Hawaii doing coupley things, like holding hands, hiking and making out on a bench. Pictures emerge of a shirtless Orlando and it's clear they are more than just friends.

April 2016: The new couple hang out at Coachella and fellow festival-goers report there was some serious PDA going on. "They came in about 20 minutes in to The Kills set," an eyewitness tells E! News. "They were hugging and with a group of other people. Orlando was behind her and swaying with her to the music. They also were vaping together. They were kissing and very much a couple."

3rd May 2016: Perrybloom attend The Met Gala in New York, but much to everyone's disappointment, they walk the red carpet separately. Still, they do manage to do one thing together. Inspired by the exhibit's theme, "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," both decide to wear matching Tamagotchis. (Romance!)

20th May 2016: It's official! After months of secrecy, Katy shares a picture of herself with Orlando at Cannes Film Festival. The photo shows the couple sprawled out on the staircase of a mansion with the caption "we cannes't". It comes a day after the duo tried very hard to play it cool for photographers at the amfAR Gala.

August 2016: Those paddleboarding photos start doing the rounds and suddenly, this relationship doesn't feel so private any more. During a relaxing getaway to Italy with Katy, Orlando strips naked before getting into the water to enjoy a romantic paddleboard ride with his girlfriend, who casually sips on a beer. NY Daily News releases the photographs, and of course, everyone starts freaking out.

October 2016: Perrybloom win at Halloween. Orlando and Katy, who campaigned for Hillary Clinton and performed at several Democrat rallies, decide to dress up as the as Donald Trump and his rival at Kate Hudson's party. And they don't mess around when it comes to making their costumes as realistic as possible. Reports say the singer spent hours having makeup and prosthetics applied.

22nd November 2016: Reports that these two are no longer an item first emerge. A source tells InTouch Weekly: "Not long after Halloween, Orlando confessed to pals that he'd decided to end their relationship. He claimed that he's just not ready to get married and have babies." Yet another source claims it was Katy who ended it. "She said they were on different life paths and as much as she likes him, it's time to move on," the insider said. Days later, they pair look like they had the greatest Thanksgiving EVER, which suggests they haven't split up after all.

2nd January 2017: Orlando kicks off 2017 by very publicly showing just how committed he is to his girlfriend. He takes Katy to Tokyo's Sanrio theme park to hang out with Hello Kitty. It must be love.

15th January 2017: In honour of Orlando's 40th birthday, Katy throws him an all-out surprise party in Palm Springs. And she really pulls out all the stops. The birthday boy gets treated to a cake topped with a life-size fondant owl on top and a surprise visit from his mum. She also arranges for guests to be given onesies printed with Orlando's face on the front. Best girlfriend ever.

26th February 2017: Katy and Orlando are pictured together at the Vanity Fair Oscars party, but multiple sources report that they weren't as close as usual during the event. #Amy #Winehouse, a #Grammy award winning #British retro-soul singer, gained access to the #27club in July 2011 after being unable to conquer her demons. Winehouse’s battle ranged from narcotics to booze that left her physically and emotionally scarred.

Winehouse showed her talent early on in life attending Theater and Performing Arts school but eventually dropped out at the age of 15. Her brother taught her how to play guitar and she began writing her own songs and performed them in local #jazz clubs. A friend helped her get some studio time and recorded demos. She was discovered in 2002 and made a deal with label Island #UK. Her first album Frank, a jazz and hip-hop influenced debuted in 2003 and went platinum in #England earning her critical acclaim. In 2007 she commented that her transition from her earlier hip-hop infusion to the sixties R&B of Back to Black matched up with her shift from weed to booze. Commenting that the mentality of weed is very ingrained in hip-hop and comes across like f**k the world whereas the booze mentality is more emotional.

Back in Black was released in the U.S. in March of 2007.

The album’s success was huge the congratulations came pouring in winning awards, love from critics and respect from fellow musicians. #Prince covered a song from her 1st album, #JayZ cameo’d in a Rehab remix and even #SnoopDogg showed his appreciation.

Shortly after her album release in 2007 Winehouse married her boyfriend she’d been with since 2005, Blake Fielder-Civil. Approximately a year later Fielder-Civil was sentenced to 27 months in jail after being found guilty of assault and attempted bribery. Her condition became worse during this time and she went into rehab.

Winehouse won 5 Grammy awards and sadly the public’s focus shifted from anticipating her new album to awaiting her latest meltdown.

She got in trouble with the law for assault and possession and had her fair share of photographs highlighting her ailing state.

In 2009, Winehouse filed for divorce from Fielder-Civil who was still in jail at the time. She spent time in St. Lucia and is said to have stopped doing hard drugs. She was showing some improvement, recording a song for a Quincy Jones tribute album as well as a duet with Tony Bennett.

She planned a 12-date European tour but her first show was a disaster.

She was booed off the stage in Belgrade Serbia after being unable to sing and missing cues. After that show an announcement was made that she would cancelling the rest of the scheduled shows to work on getting well.

Her final public appearance was in support of her god-daughter that was performing a gig at the London Roadhouse, she was seen dancing nearby.

The day before her death her body guard claims she was her usual bubbly self, and was on YouTube watching clips of herself he commented that she had been drinking but didn’t seem completely drunk. In the early hours of July 23rd 2011 her body guard left the home returning about 8 hours later checking in on her and found her face down, fully clothed on her bed next to her laptop assuming she had fallen asleep. When he checked on her again and saw that she was in the same position he grew concerned and found that she had passed. Two empty bottles of vodka lay on the floor next to her bed. The police preceded to announce that her cause of death was unexplained. After conducting an autopsy in was found that Winehouse died of “misadventure” having 416 mg of alcohol per deciliter in her blood when 350 mg is known to be fatal. This was enough to affect her central nervous system and stop her breathing.

Winehouse’s doctor that was helping her work through her drug and alcohol addiction on July 22nd the day before her death. The doctor recalls that Winehouse specifically said she did not want to die. She had been sober for 12 or 13 days before her death, and in a moment of mental weakness began drinking again, if she would have been discovered sooner she could have survived.

On that dark July day as Winehouse’s body was being carried from her London home fans began to come together near by to console each other and began creating a shrine in front of her home with flowers, candles, paintings, cigarettes and bottles of wine and vodka. July 23rd marked the day Amy Winehouse joined the 27 club.
