Honor 9X, Honor Magic Watch 2, and Honor Band 5i were launched in India on Tuesday. The Honor 9X launched in India is the phone’s global variant and has a different set of specifications compared to the Honor 9X phone that went official in China back in July last year. It is very similar to the Huawei Y9 Prime (2019) smartphone that was launched in the country last year. The Honor 9X packs a triple rear camera setup that includes a 48-megapixel main snapper, and also sports a 16-megapixel pop-up selfie camera. The Honor Band 5i stands out with its ability to plug in directly to a USB port for charging, eliminating the need for a separate charging apparatus. As for the Honor Magic Watch 2, it brings GPS support and can detect six common types of sleep disorders. At the event, Honor also launched the Honor Sport Pro and Honor Sport Bluetooth earphones, priced at Rs. 3,999 and Rs. 1,999 respectively.

The Honor 9X carries a price tag of Rs. 13,999 for the base 4GB + 128GB variant, while the higher-end 6GB + 128GB model will set buyers back by Rs. 16,999. It comes in Midnight Black and Sapphire Blue colour options, and will go on sale via Flipkart starting January 19, 12am (midnight) onwards in India.
Buyers will get a limited-time discount worth Rs. 1,000 on the Honor 9X’s 4GB + 128GB variant on the first day of sale. Banking offers include 10 percent discount on purchases made using an ICICI Bank credit card and Kotak Mahindra debit or credit card. This offer will be valid from January 19 to January 22, 2020.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Honor 9X runs Android 9 Pie with the custom EMUI 9.1 skin on top. It packs a 6.59-inch full-HD+ (1080 x 2340 pixels) display paired with 91 percent screen-to-body ratio and pixel density of 391ppi. It is powered by the in-house HiSilicon Kirin 710F SoC paired with up to 6GB of RAM.
The Honor 9X’s triple rear camera setup is highlighted by a 48-megapixel main shooter with an f/1.8 aperture and AIS Super Night mode support. Connectivity is handled by 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, A-GPS, and GLONASS, while sensors onboard are a fingerprint sensor, compass, ambient light sensor, and gravity sensor. The Honor Magic Watch 2’s 46mm model starts at Rs. 12,999 for the Charcoal Black variant, while the Flax Brown colour option will up for grabs at Rs. 14,999. 2019 Cadillac XT4 First Test: Follow the Leader
Once the king of sedans, Cadillac is a bit late to the party in launching a second crossover to complement the XT5, its best-selling product in the U.S. and worldwide last year. Enter the XT4, which fills the gap and has something else Cadillac can use—a touch of youth.
Brand reps boast that a team of young designers created this compact crossover, which looks conventional from the side but stands out at other angles with its sharply vertical headlights and taillights. It eschews Cadillac’s usual thick, shiny grille for a tidier front face. Its short overhangs give it an upright appearance. In some ways, the youthful look fits a bimodal customer base: Cadillac is targeting both first-time premium buyers with prices as low as $35,790 and “downsizers” who want luxury-packed versions. With this approach, the XT4 needs to be a well-rounded performer.
The level of new technology in the XT4 speaks to the vehicle’s importance in Cadillac’s lineup. Sitting on a new architecture for compact SUVs, the XT4 receives a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is said to share very little with the outgoing unit offered on other models. It’s 15 pounds lighter and features three operating modes: high valve lift for more power, low valve lift for improved efficiency, and cylinder deactivation that turns off two cylinders when they’re not needed. This coarse, grainy powerplant makes 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and fortunately, peak torque is available at just 1,500 rpm.
During testing, our staff took note of the XT4’s eager but slightly lacking powerplant. “This engine makes the XT4 feel like it’s quicker than it really is,” senior production editor Zach Gale said.
However, when we tested the XT4, it reached 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, making it slower than a comparable Volvo XC40 (6.7 seconds), Mercedes-Benz GLA (6.9 seconds), Infiniti QX50 (6.4 seconds), and even the next-size-up BMW X3 xDrive30i (6.3 seconds). So why the slowness against similar 2.0-liter turbo SUVs?
Our Caddy tester had optional 20-inch wheels instead of the standard 18-inchers. It’s also heavier as tested than the Volvo and Mercedes (but lighter than the Infiniti and BMW). Perhaps, as associate online editor Stefan Ogbac said, “the engine is punchy, but there’s a bit of lag before you get boost.”
The XT4 brakes confidently in typical driving or when coming to an abrupt stop. It also goes up steep hills comfortably, makes quick three-point turns, and swiftly restarts the engine after a red light. But in other areas, the XT4 proved less adept.
“It seemed to steer, brake, accelerate, and corner in a fairly average manner,” technical director Frank Markus said. “Nothing stood out as exceptional. That might be my problem with the entire car.”
Occupants will experience noticeable amounts of body roll while winding through twisty roads on 20-inch wheels. We found this issue on models with and without the Active Sport Suspension, an available feature that adjusts damping 500 times per second. The XT4 displayed more stability at higher speeds on the freeway, we noted.
We also lamented the crossover’s tire noise, though it’s not enough to disturb a conversation inside the vehicle. A tester we drove with the smaller 18-inch wheels felt slightly more refined in terms of noise abatement. Despite some road noise, Cadillac has successfully prevented too much wind noise from entering the cabin, save from the blunting of the A-pillar.
Many compliments we give the XT4 warrant a qualification. “The XT4 rides well, but it’s somewhat stiff,” Ogbac said of the tester with the Active Sport Suspension. “Handling is OK but nothing stellar,” Ogbac adds. Although the car’s steering is accurate enough to take on windy roads, it feels slightly detached.
Added features editor Christian Seabaugh: “The steering lacks that delicacy that Cadillacs had for a brief time.”
In our figure-eight test, the XT4 managed 27.6 seconds at 0.61 g. Compare that with the XC40 that zipped round the bends in 27 seconds flat at 0.65 g, the GLA (26.6 seconds at 0.67 g), and QX50 (26.4 seconds at 0.69 g).
“It has very short gears,” testing director Kim Reynolds noted of the too-busy nine-speed transmission during the test. “Second gear is way too low, and even shifting third to fourth found me momentarily touching the rev limiter.”
According to the EPA, the XT4 returns 24/30 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive, lower than ratings for the QX50, XC40, or GLA but comparable with the front-drive X3, which tops out at 23/30. With all-wheel drive, the XT4’s numbers drop to 22/29 mpg. These latter models feature a twin-clutch system that can completely decouple from the rear wheels when the driver selects a particular mode, aiding fuel economy. Electrohydraulic braking replaces the traditional vacuum-assisted setup, also enhancing efficiency.
Seldom have we stepped out of a Cadillac wanting more quality time with the CUE infotainment system—until now. The new screen responds quickly to touch and stands by itself above two clean rows of buttons. Now, users also get a second option for controlling the system: a rotary controller on the lower center console next to the gear shifter. Plus, there are physical buttons for the climate control and a volume knob (unfortunately located directly behind the gear shifter). But those dreaded capacitive sliders have been banished to the bad-ideas bin.
“The new CUE feels like a solid improvement,” features editor Scott Evans said. “The touch panel was always the big issue, and the knobs and hard buttons solve that.”
Cadillac is offering different XT4 flavors. The base Luxury model has the aforementioned $35,790 base price and comes standard with CUE, LED headlights and taillights, and leatherette seats. We only tested the top two trims—Sport and Premium Luxury—both priced from $40,290. Sport models come with unique gloss black accents, and Premium Luxury models don metallic accents.
Of course, prices climb quickly with options. And they did on our testers, which ranged from $52,285 to $56,835. That’s a lot for a compact crossover. Cold weather packages, sunroofs, navigation, tech packages, and driver-assist goodies add considerable coin.
Even on our loaded testers, some materials feel more Buick than Cadillac. Hard plastics abound on the dashboard and doors, and the headliner looks and feels less than Germanic. And although Sport and Premium Luxury models both upgrade to leather seating surfaces, Evans pointed out the grain and sheen of the material “makes it look synthetic.” Which prompts the philosophical question: Which is worse, real leather that looks fake, or fake leather that looks real?
Rather than giving the interior of its entry-level crossover its own identity—much like Volvo did with the XC40—Cadillac disappointingly gave the XT4 a cabin that looks like a scaled-down version of what you’d expect from the brand, save for the infotainment screen.
Although on paper the Cadillac has more rear-seat legroom than both smaller and bigger competitors, it doesn’t feel that way. Rear occupants will find themselves wishing Cadillac had compromised some cargo space for some additional legroom.
Other products in the Cadillac line—namely the ATS and CT6—inspire thoughts of taking tight corners on mountain roads or enjoying the ride from the rear seat in unmitigated luxury. The XT4 doesn’t conjure up these same feelings.
To be sure, no entry-level crossover exhibits the best acceleration, handling, and design that its brand has to offer. Not even close. But the XT4 lacks in each of these categories, failing to offer the balance the small luxury crossover segment demands. It’s most comfortable as a highway cruiser, which is all some customers will need.

Xiaomi Mi A1: Traditional Mobile 16:9 with Premium finish
The Xiaomi Mi A1 takes the designs of the Xiaomi Mi 5X. It is a smartphone with a very ergonomic finish, a rounded body, not only the corners but also the sides making it very comfortable to hold in your hand.
The model we analyze has a white front covered by Gorilla Glass 3 glass. It is not terminal that stands out for the percentage of frontal that covers the screen since we have, on the one hand, 16:9 format screen and, on the other, some notable frames in both the upper and lower part.
In this case, the lower part houses Android capacitive buttons to control the smartphone unlike many other mobile phones on the market, which saves space on the screen when using the mobile phone.
This terminal is not small, measures 155.4 x 75.8 x 7.3 mm but what we can say is that for the size it feels very light when you use it. It weighs 165 grams.
Xiaomi Mi A1: Software
If we talk about the back side, the Android One logo is noted at the bottom. It makes clear reference to the software running on the terminal, a very light version of Android 7.1.2 and stock launcher. The user experience it provides is traced to the one offered by Google Pixel.
Undoubtedly another of the elements to take into account this aluminium back (golden colour in our case) is the fingerprint reader. It has a circular shape and in our experience, it worked very well since you only have to put your finger to unlock the screen automatically. It’s very fast and has not failed on virtually any occasion. As an extra at this point, you can configure it to display the notifications by sliding your finger up and down.

And to finish, we record the rear camera, or rather, cameras. It is a dual camera with 2x zoom and offers very good results in this price range. The most advanced users will want to know if it is the same configuration as the Xiaomi Mi 6, and the reality is that it is not the same configuration as the Xiaomi Mi 5X. As you can see, the double camera pack protrudes from the back as it happens in other terminals on the market such as iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus or Moto G5S.
As you can see in the photo, both in the upper and lower part we have visible antenna lines that in other colours are more disguised. It is not something that bothers or hinders the day to day, but, there they are.
Xiaomi Mi A1: Design
Within this section of the design, we have to comment that Xiaomi has not discarded the mini-jack port, having it in the lower part next to the USB-C connector. This terminal has a curious and useful extra, infrared emitter at the top. This means that you can use the Mi A1 as a universal remote control and control your TV, air conditioning, etc.
The Xiaomi terminal mounts a 5.5-inch screen with an IPS Full HD resolution panel with a slightly cool calibration without having any exaggerated oversaturation tint. In mundane words: it is a screen with good viewing angles and it looks good in any situation.
If we talk about colour calibration, it is good, but not the best on the market. It gives the sensation of having a small balance towards cold tones that you notice in white colours that tend to blue. It is not problematic at all and surely is not detectable for untrained eyes. As a negative point, we have to comment that there is no option to customize that calibration natively.
The personalization of the screen comes with possibilities to vary the brightness, level of automatic brightness, the size of the source and the screen, and, from developer mode, choose an RGB colour mode that offers colours faithful to that format.
The Mi A1 has an automatic brightness control that works correctly by varying the brightness of the screen according to the amount of ambient light in real time. We emphasize the level of minimum brightness that it offers at night, being able to use the mobile phone without disturbing your sight or that of others.
The maximum brightness offered by the Xiaomi Mi A1 is good, it can be used on the street in full sunlight, but we can say that it is not the highest on the market, but it is on a par with other terminals in this range. The Moto G5S or the Aquaris V Plus.
Mi A1 offers an interesting functionality that has been called Ambience Screen. If we activate the functionality we will see the notifications of the terminal with the screen off, that is, if we have the mobile on the table and a notification arrives, the notification received will be lit with blank text.

Xiaomi did a great job in the photographic section of its flagship Mi 6 and is something that has tried to transport that experience to lower ranges such as the Mi 5X or this Mi A1. The double chamber configuration is similar in layout and aesthetics, but the trimming is noticeable in the qualities of the sensor and optics. The rear camera of the Xiaomi Mi A1 mounts two 12-Megapixels sensors. The main sensor has a photodiode size of 1.25 μm and offers a 26mm perspective with an aperture lens f/2.2. It is an interesting configuration that achieves great results in situations where lighting is not low.
The second camera has a 12-Megapixels sensor with a somewhat smaller photodiode size, 1 μm, as well as the aperture that goes up to f/2.6. The perspective offered is 50mm what is being a 2x optical zoom in front of the main camera. The characteristics of this camera make it usable in situations where there is good lighting, indoors we begin to notice that it is less bright than the main one.
Xiaomi Mi A1 has an HDR mode and works quite well raising the shadows and softening somewhat the burned areas. The result is good, but not so much the process to achieve it, since the absence of stabilization in this camera means that as we do not have a good light it is likely that stunning images will be achieved.
Where does the Xiaomi Mi A1 camera stand out especially? In Portrait mode. It is a dedicated mode that we have to activate and makes a joint use of the image of the second sensor and the first to detect the “background” of the image to blur it by software before saving it. This setting is automatic and cannot be adjusted before or after capturing the image in a similar way to how it works on iPhone terminals.
The results are very good in most situations. You get photos that could go through photos taken with some DSLR or with a smartphone that will probably triple in price to this A1. Although, as we have commented previously, at night it will not be possible to obtain portraits due to the low luminosity.
The software of the camera is simple, allow you to focus on touching the screen and adjust the exposure of the shot afterwards. The interface shines for its simplicity, at the top we have a flash button, Portrait or HDR mode and at the bottom, we can access the Options, from where manual controls are available among other predefined modes.

Xiaomi did a great job in terms of performance with its Xiaomi Mi 6, but of course, we talked about a mobile with a Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB of RAM. The experience of use with Mi A1 with a less capable processor, Snapdragon 625, is just as fluid in the day to day and this is largely thanks to the software.
Android One is a version of the Google software prepared to work consuming fewer resources than the native Android version. Mi A1 arrives with Android One 7.1.2 Nougat but has announced that it will have support for the next version, Android 8.0 Oreo.
The launcher and software is no longer the traditional MIUI of Xiaomi to offer an Android stock experience, that is, the experience in terms of applications and launcher is the same as you can have with a Google Pixel. Personally, this was one of the points that always slowed me down when it came to making the leap to Xiaomi phones. The MIUI layer went beyond a launcher, is very intrusive and is something that was seen even in the configuration of the system. That coupled with the updates arrived well in advance of the Chinese ROM version that the version with ROM Global was always a handicap for me.
Xiaomi Mi A1 has broken that custom software scheme and manages to get the attention of people looking for a user experience as clean as possible, also has an update to Android Oreo way, and Android One support seems to guarantee updates during the life of the phone.
Have we encountered any problems during our tests? The truth is that if they have not been big problems, but they have been bothersome bugs. We have seen a bug in the screen environment that sometimes prevented us from actually turning on the phone screen and required a restart. Other bugs were the random loss of 4G connectivity, not being able to turn off the phone or forced closures of the Google application.
The last two updates have solved those problems and finally, we have been able to use the updated terminal with the latest Google patches and without dragging bugs from previous versions. We have taken a look at the official forums MIUI and people have complained about these problems, have commented that an update solved a problem but reintroduced previous bugs. In short, the experience until the update last November was not as fine as it should have been.
However, since the November update, the terminal looks like another. It has a very smooth operation; we have not noticed slowdowns, forced closures or connectivity problems or turn off the terminal. As we say, it is not something that if you buy the mobile affects you but it does show that Xiaomi is paying special attention to the update of this mobile terminal. Not in vain, we just received the update of the month of December that according to Xiaomi solves bugs and updates the security patch of Google.
We talk about performance and it’s a curious point because we have a capable chip, Snapdragon 625, not the highest range but more than enough for most users. Mi A1 also has 4GB of RAM and is something that is noticed during multitasking or use of apps in split screen. You will not have appreciable lag in demanding the use of the phone.
Another thing is if we talk about 3D graphics and how the Adreno 506 GPU renders in Full HD resolution in games. In most cases, we will have an acceptable frame rate but it is far from the general fluidity achieved by other higher-end phones with more powerful chips.
It is a perfect mobile for users of casual games or with a high rate of fps or if you are a user who does not mind suffering some slowdown during the game. In most cases, we are facing a mobile that offers a good gaming experience to next-generation titles, although we must bear in mind that this is the critical point in the performance of the Mi A1.
Optimized Autonomy to Spend the day
The new Xiaomi Mi A1 integrates a battery that exceeds 3,080 mAh, a figure that seems to have been set as standard in 2017. However, not all smartphones consume the same. Each hardware and software element counts and in this case Xiaomi has achieved an interesting balance with a frugal chip, Snapdragon 625 manufactured in 14nm. The adaptation of Android One to its platform is highly optimized to the point that on occasion we have come to use the phone for almost two days.
In the synthetic tests of autonomy, we have observed more than 6 hours and half hours of use with screen on and during this period of use day by day we attest to that. Not only can we get to the end of the day with enough battery, but if we make a lighter use of the mobile you forget if you charged the phone last night or was the night before.
This smartphone integrates USB-C and the charger that Xiaomi integrates into the box is a charger that offers 2A of charging intensity. If you are wondering about the fast loading support we have to let you see another aspect of the smartphone’s improvement. It is a functionality that does not support as standard even using a QC 2.0/QC 3.0 compatible charger.

We miss some feature such as fast charging or NFC (necessary for mobile payments, among others). However, Mi A1 combines characteristics that the great thickness of users looks for in a mobile: good camera, autonomy, performance and general fluidity of the system. Not in vain, it has broken stock worldwide and is a clear indication of the interest of the general public.

2018 Range Rover Velar V-6 First Drive: What is Hiding in Range Rover’s New Luxury SUV?
We’ve just finished lunching on locally caught fried white fish, reindeer stew with mashed potatoes, and freshly picked strawberries with cream at a little cafe with a stunning 270-degree view of the fjords below. The whole setup is, as the kids say these days, “Norwegian af.” In the winter, this joint serves as a warming hut for a local ski resort, and getting here involved crisscrossing up a mile and half of steep, rock-strewn switchbacks. On a brisk day in January, it would be exhilarating to blast down on a set of skis. Today, we’re glad to be swaddled in the all-new Range Rover Velar, equipped with height-adjustable air suspension and hill-descent control. “Hullo, do you mind if I join you for the ride down?” asks the chipper PR rep with a smile and posh London accent sparkly enough for three Orbitz gum commercials. Of course the answer is yes, so in she hops in and introduces herself with a laugh. “It’s quite confusing, really. My name is Mercedes, but do you know how awkward that is in this business? Especially when you have to ring people up and say, ‘Hi, this is Mercedes, of Jaguar Land Rover.’ ” It’s giggles and the crunch of rock under rubber the whole way down. Velar also seems to be a puzzling name for this all-new fourth model in the Range Rover line, but there is precedent. When developing the original Range Rover, Land Rover engineers dubbed the prototype Velar, from the Latin word for “to cover, hide.” That makes sense for a secret prototype, and it does roll off the tongue quite luxuriously (with emphasis on the first syllable), but is Range Rover hiding something? Not if you ask the engineers. Chief body engineer Rob Scott is up front about the platform and engine sharing between Velar and the Jaguar F-Pace. Both are built on the same line at the Solihull, England, factory that gave birth to the Land Rover brand, now owned by the Jaguar Land Rover group. The Velar launches with six aluminum-intensive, direct-injection inline-four and V-6 engines developed in-house at JLR. For North America, there are two turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinders on offer: a 180-horsepower diesel or a 247-horsepower gas engine. The current top of the range is the 380-horsepower supercharged V-6 gas engine that powers our fjord explorer. “This is the most road-oriented Range Rover ever developed,” Scott says. It’s a claim we partially validated along the always stunning, occasionally harrowing byways that tickle the west coast of Norway. The majority of roads we drive are single-lane in each direction and often narrow for sharing in curvy, forested parts between towns. With some form of water on the ground most of the year, giant Scania trucks lumbering around blind corners, and strict enforcement of traffic laws, Norwegian speed limits are low and not for flouting. A limit-handling evaluation will have to wait, but at first blush, the Velar feels good, familiar. We loved F-Pace’s mix of sport and civility enough to nearly name it 2017 SUV of the Year, and the Velar comports itself in similar fashion but with more attention focused on smoothing out bumps, rounding off hard edges, and creating a “calm sanctuary.” This a tough assignment for our First Edition Velar, which comes shod in 22-inch wheels and low-profile tires, but credit goes to the aluminum-intensive double-A-arm front and multilink rear suspension, continuously variable adaptive dampers, and optional air suspension. The Velar’s neatest trick is how thoroughly it cloaks all its technology; although there are multiple drive modes on offer—tunable electric power steering response, a brake-based torque vectoring system, and an electronic locking rear differential—they are mostly invisible until fiddled with. Range Rover claims a 4,471-pound curb weight for the V-6 Velar and that it will hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which is all very believable. Our V-6 Velar is always a willing partner; no matter the on-road mode selected (Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, or Race), all 332 lb-ft of torque felt readily available via distant thumps of the ZF eight-speed transmission. Popping back the left downshift paddle gets things going fractionally quicker, but the right foot covers most situations. That said, the V-6 Velar is not a head-snapping wolf in a fitted wool suit. There is plenty left to hone a sharper-edged, more track-focused SVR Velar. After thoroughly trouncing a series of man-made obstacles, including wheel articulation ramps, a curved side slope, and a hill climb and then charging triumphantly up a groomed off-road course, we ask the opinion of Land Rover expert Steve Hoare. For someone who spends his weekdays editing Alloy and Grit, a Land Rover enthusiast publication, and his weekends tending to five Land Rovers ranging from a 1949 Series 1 to a 2003 Discovery 2 (all pre–independent suspension and electronic aids, mind you), he is remarkably charitable. We both agree that traction and forward progress are never an issue; the off-road modes in Range Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system, programs such as Low Traction Launch and All Terrain Progress Control (a low-speed off-road cruise-control setting), and that height-adjustable air suspension take nearly all of the drama out of climbing hill and dale. All one really has to do is steer and thumb speeds up or down. But Hoare does dismiss the Velar’s handling of a fundamental off-road principle: outward visibility. “All Land Rovers used to be known for their ‘Command’ seating position,” Hoare says. The Velar’s more road-focused “Sports-Command” driving position and high beltline style mean the driver sits low, with a broad expanse of hood to peer over. Scott respectfully disagrees, arguing that the power-adjustable seats and voluminous headroom allow most drivers to sit as high up as necessary. To further address visibility concerns, Range Rover does make the views from the Velar’s four parking-aid cameras available while four-wheeling. But Velar’s launch story isn’t really about on- or off-road prowess—it’s about design. Even though their wheelbases are the same at 113.1 inches, the Velar shares no exterior body panels with the F-Pace. Its hood, fenders, and roof are made from aluminum, and the rear hatch is composite—all in the name of weight savings. Doors are steels to help with side impacts and the architectural look chief designer Gerry McGovern was after. Unlike the curvy and muscular F-Pace, the Velar is smooth and slabby—less sculpted in the gym, more hewn from solid billet. Perhaps surprisingly, the Velar is the more aerodynamic of the two; its 0.32 drag coefficient (in turbodiesel configuration) makes it the most aerodynamically efficient vehicle in Land Rover history (and a good deal slicker than the 0.37 of F-Pace.) An upright grille and short front overhang combine with the longer rear overhang to give the Velar its rakish, wind-cheating profile. Cleverly executed details such as the optional blacked-out roof and pillars, flush-fit deployable door handles, and a reversed cut line that rises from front bumper to rear further buff the Velar’s visual appeal. Silver satin finish paint, copper-colored accents, and those aforementioned 22s set apart the limited run of 500 First Editions even further. The Velar is positioned above the Evoque and below the Sport in the Range Rover lineup, but it challenges all, including the flagship, when it comes to interior execution. Reductionism is the overall theme, incorporating that overused trope “less is more,” but it’s doubtful Ludwig Mies van der Rohe would eye roll what the interior design team has done—especially if he could sit in the driver’s seat with every system off (quite hard to do in the smart key era). When the Velar is completely asleep, the driver is surrounded by a sensory-indulgent chamber composed of swathes of texture in blocks of muted colors ranging from fuzzy dark gray synthetic suede on the headliner, open-pore charcoal-colored wood inserts on the dash and doors, and glossy black touchscreen displays. First Editions also get special “cut diamond” pattern in the perforated leather seats and synthetic door inserts, but the star of the show is the yards of gray wool fabric on offer. Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat (pronounced more like Cavadra) is Europe’s largest supplier of premium fabrics and supplies such luxury furniture makers as B&B Italia, Knoll, and Vitra. Kvadrat worked with Range Rover to develop a 30 percent wool, 70 percent polyester blend that not only meets stringent automotive standards (including safety, durability, stain, fade, and color transfer resistance) but also can stand on its own as a premium offering. In what it claims is an industry first, Range Rover is offering the Kvadrat wool blend as an option on par with its best Windsor leather. Does it work? Sumptuously so. Not all automotive leathers are created equal, but they do all tend to cover the seats of luxury vehicles. Velar’s wool-ensconced interior feels strikingly different yet familiar; it’s like you’re home but in a car. Which is precisely the point: One goal of the Velar’s interior design team was to make the cabin more like a living space— from the leather, cozy wool textiles, and wood paneling to the twin gloss-black screens mounted flush in the center console. This is the Touch Pro Duo system, Range Rover’s new infotainment system. It uses high-definition touchscreen displays that control everything from HVAC and audio to smartphone apps and Terrain Response 2. In keeping with the reductionist theme, Touch Pro Duo employs precious few buttons, a volume knob, and two knurled rings prominently embedded in the lower touchscreen to change function depending on what system is engaged. If you don’t mind fingerprints or having to look when you touch (capacitive buttons provide no haptic feedback, so visual confirmation is required), the system works well and is substantially more responsive than previous JLR touchscreens. When the drape lifted on the Velar last year, it uncovered a production midsize crossover so slick and dramatically proportioned as to be mistaken for yet another gorgeous yet implausible concept. Our brief Scandanavian stint reveals that the Velar is the real luxurious deal against the backdrop of Norway’s jaw-dropping roads and vistas.
