───── ❝ ❞ ─────
I had just gotten home and sprawled out on my apartment's couch, letting Netflix autoplay something random after finishing Brooklyn Nine-Nine again. My phone buzzed, interrupting my thoughts.
Tumblr media
Tuesday, March 12, 2024Today, 3:16 PM UNKNOWN: Alley said she tried to call you, text me when you're on the way to the rink.
My phone buzzed again.
Today, 3:42 PM UNKNOWN: Steph?
Today, 4:01 PM UNKNOWN: Are you on your way or not?
I glanced at my phone, seeing another message from the unknown number. Smirking slightly, typing a quick response.
ME: Not Steph, good luck finding your girlfriend.
I tossed my phone aside and settled deeper into the couch, trying to distract myself from the uninspired short story I had been working on. Hours passed, and I still hadn’t made any progress. The story was just another tall tale that could easily end with "and then I woke up," and at this rate, it might.
My phone buzzed again, and I groaned before reaching for it.
Today, 12:19 AM UNKNOWN: Gross. I was looking for my sister.
I sighed, feeling slightly amused.
ME: Okay? Hope you found her. UNKNOWN: I'm sorry to have bothered you, I realise the area code is wrong.
With nothing better to do, I found myself replying, curiosity piqued.
ME: 212, Manhattan. Nice area, rich boy charm. UNKNOWN: Not really rich, or much charm. But boy, yes. 619, where's that? ME: San Diego.
A pause. I put my phone down, trying to focus back on my assignment, but the ping of a new message distracted me.
UNKNOWN: I'm guessing you're just as bored as I am right now. ME: Definitely bored, that is correct. UNKNOWN: So San Diego, what’s keeping you awake that’s so boring? ME: Nothing much, Manhattan. Just assignments. But it’s only 12:30 here, isn’t it 3 AM in NY? UNKNOWN: That would be correct. ME: Then what’s keeping YOU awake? UNKNOWN: Won my hockey game, went to celebrate, and now I’m just sitting here.
I chuckled, intrigued by the late-night conversation.
ME: Hockey? Do you play for a college team or just for fun?
There was a long pause, a stark contrast to the quick replies earlier.
MANHATTAN: Yeah, I do college hockey. ME: Nice, what position? I don’t know LOTS about hockey or anything, but I'm friends with some guys on the SDSU team. MANHATTAN: Haha, right wing. But really, I just rough people up 💪 ME: Oh cool! (no clue what a right wing does) MANHATTAN: Then what position does your boyfriend play?
I raised an eyebrow, feeling the conversation shift.
ME: I never said that word. MANHATTAN: And I'm just checking. You are a girl, right? I’m not about to hit on a 50-year-old man.
I laughed, surprised by his forwardness.
ME: You’re about to hit on me? Are you meant to tell me that? MANHATTAN: Probably not, but I had a few drinks a bit ago so I can blame it on the alcohol if it goes wrong. ME: Yes, I am a girl. MANHATTAN: Wonderful, now that I know you're not trying to lure me into your mother's basement so you can use my skin as your new rug, can I get your name?
I smirked, enjoying the playful tone.
ME: Whoa, never said anything about NOT making a new rug. I kind of like the whole Manhattan & San Diego anonymous thing we have happening. MANHATTAN: Hmm, I guess so. A secret identity might not be the best move though. ME: Are you sure you want to risk it? Might say something regrettable since it’s 4 AM for you now. MANHATTAN: But it's only 1 AM for you, so it’s a risk I’ll take ;)
I smiled, feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity.
ME: Exactly how many strangers do you text like this? MANHATTAN: If I say only 1 will that make you feel special? ME: So you just go around contacting random numbers in hopes they’re girls your age so you can try to knock their socks off? MANHATTAN: You catch on fast, San Diego.
I rubbed my eyes, getting off the couch, typing as I walked through my small apartment. I passed my roommate’s bedroom, noticing her snoring with her phone still looping the last TikTok she’d been watching.
As I reached my room, I took off my hoodie and left my phone on my bed, watching for the next message.
ME: So, tell me about your hockey match. MANHATTAN: Well… I actually got ejected so I didn’t do much. ME: Ahh, a ruffian. MANHATTAN: All I did was elbow a guy! ME: In the face? MANHATTAN: No comment. ME: While going really fast on knife shoes? MANHATTAN: I said no comment, San Diego 😠😠 But yes. I may have a little notoriety for… enforcing. ME: How many fights does college hockey have? Oh wow. MANHATTAN: I think that's enough of my sports career. Tell me about you. ME: About me? MANHATTAN: I want to know about you. I mean it, tell me something.
I hesitated, then smiled.
ME: Um, I can't think of anything… I just got into bed. MANHATTAN: Then you should go, San Diego, get some rest. Nice chatting with you (and I'll text you later in the day if that's alright). ME: Bye, Manhattan 👋 (and I wouldn't be opposed).
Tumblr media
I placed my phone on the nightstand, my thoughts lingering on the unexpected connection as I drifted off to sleep.
───── ❝ ❞ ─────
I woke up to a new text message, my groggy eyes struggling to adjust to the brightness of my phone screen.
Tumblr media
Wednesday, March 13, 2024today 10:32am MANHATTAN: Morning, San Diego! Did you sleep well?
I smiled at the message, feeling a little flutter in my chest. I hadn’t expected him to actually text me again, but here he was.
ME: Morning! I did, thanks 😊 How about you? Finally got some sleep after your 4 am texting spree? MANHATTAN: Eventually, yeah. Slept in a bit, but now I’m back at it. MANHATTAN: Classes and all that. ME: Fun times… What’s your major? MANHATTAN: Business. It’s alright, but hockey’s the real passion. You? ME: English, hence my very exciting letter-writing assignment 🙄 MANHATTAN: Ah, right. The one you’re totally not procrastinating on. ME: Exactly! I’m just waiting for inspiration to hit. MANHATTAN: Maybe I can help with that.
I raised an eyebrow at the screen, intrigued.
ME: Oh yeah? You’re a secret writing genius, Mr. Hockey? MANHATTAN: Hardly. But I’m good at roughing up boring ideas. Give me a shot. What’s the assignment again? ME: I have to write a long letter. Could be to anyone about anything… It's supposed to show off my writing skills. MANHATTAN: How about a letter to a stranger? Like some random person you met by mistake… 👀
I laughed, seeing where he was going with this.
ME: Sounds like something I’d do. Maybe I’ll take you up on that. MANHATTAN: If you need material, I can keep sending you nonsense texts. You know, for inspiration. ME: Careful, I might just put all your deepest, darkest secrets into my assignment. MANHATTAN: Bold of you to assume I have any secrets, San Diego. ME: Everyone has secrets, Manhattan.
There was a pause before he responded, the three little dots appearing and disappearing a few times. I wondered what he was thinking or if I’d said something to make him hesitate.
MANHATTAN: Guess you’ll have to keep talking to me to find out 😉 ME: Smooth. Real smooth. MANHATTAN: It’s part of my so-called charm. So, what’s your day looking like? ME: Not much, honestly. Maybe I’ll hit the library, try to get some work done. MANHATTAN: Or you could do something fun instead. Life’s too short to spend all day in the library. ME: Fun? What do you suggest? MANHATTAN: Well, if you were in Manhattan, I’d say we go skating. But since you’re all the way over there… What do people even do for fun in San Diego? ME: I could go to the beach… but it’s not really the best weather for it today. MANHATTAN: Rainy? ME: Just cloudy, kind of chilly. The ocean looks a bit gloomy when it’s like this. MANHATTAN: Gloomy beaches, sounds like a whole vibe. Maybe that’s your inspiration. A letter to the ocean or something. ME: You really think a letter to the ocean will get me a passing grade? MANHATTAN: If you write it well enough, why not? Make it all deep and meaningful. Professors eat that stuff up. ME: Haha, I’ll think about it. Anyway, what about you? Any big plans? MANHATTAN: Just practice later, then probably hanging out with the team. Nothing too exciting. ME: Sounds like a solid day. Try not to get ejected this time. MANHATTAN: No promises. Gotta keep my reputation, you know? ME: Right, the tough guy. I’ll keep that in mind. MANHATTAN: But I’m a softie at heart, San Diego. Don’t let the hockey fool you. ME: Noted. Maybe I’ll write that in my letter. “To the boy who’s tough on the ice but soft underneath…” MANHATTAN: Now you’re getting it. Make me sound mysterious. ME: Mysterious, huh? I’ll see what I can do.
I was grinning now, the banter flowing easily between us. There was something about this random stranger that made me feel lighter, like maybe today wasn’t going to be so dull after all.
ME: Alright, I should actually get ready if I’m going to do anything productive today. But thanks for the distraction, Manhattan. MANHATTAN: Anytime, San Diego. I’ll text you later? ME: Looking forward to it.

I was curled up on my couch, a mug of tea warming my hands as I absentmindedly scrolled through my phone. The past month had flown by, and my unexpected friendship with 'Manhattan' had become a regular part of my routine. We’d been texting nearly every day, sharing snippets of our lives, random thoughts, and plenty of playful banter. But lately, something had shifted—his messages had taken on a more flirty tone, and, honestly, I didn’t mind it.
My phone buzzed, and I smiled when his contact name popped up on the screen.
Tumblr media
Friday, April 12, 2024today 8:45pm MANHATTAN: What’s up, San Diego? Missing me yet?
I couldn’t help but grin at his words. He’d been dropping little hints like this more and more, and each time, it sent a little thrill through me.
ME: Why would I miss you? We just talked this morning 😏 MANHATTAN: I don’t know, you tell me. Maybe you’re secretly counting down the hours until you hear from me again. ME: Oh, totally. I’m just sitting here pining away. MANHATTAN: Knew it. You can’t resist my charm. ME: Your ego is something else, you know that? MANHATTAN: Only because you feed it. Anyway, what’s the plan for tonight? Any hot dates?
I felt a little flutter in my chest at the question, even though I knew he was probably just teasing.
ME: Just me, myself, and I tonight. Super exciting. MANHATTAN: That’s a shame. If I were in San Diego, I’d take you out somewhere nice. ME: Oh yeah? Where would you take me, Mr. Big City? MANHATTAN: Somewhere with a view, good food, and even better company. ME: Wow, smooth talker. Do you use this line on all the girls? MANHATTAN: Only the ones who accidentally text me back 😉
I laughed, shaking my head at his response.
ME: Lucky me, I guess. MANHATTAN: I think I’m the lucky one here.
I paused, reading the message again, feeling my cheeks warm slightly. There it was again—that flirty edge that had been creeping into his texts lately. And I couldn’t pretend I didn’t like it.
ME: Is that so? MANHATTAN: Definitely. How many girls are cool enough to joke about turning me into a rug and then end up being someone I actually want to talk to every day? ME: Fair point. I’m one of a kind. MANHATTAN: That you are. So, since I’m not there to take you out, what are you doing to entertain yourself? ME: I’m just relaxing, maybe watching a movie later. Nothing too crazy. MANHATTAN: Sounds cozy. I’d offer to keep you company, but I’m not sure you’re ready to handle my charming self in person. ME: Oh, I’m sure I could handle you just fine. MANHATTAN: Careful, San Diego. I might take that as a challenge.
I bit my lip, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves at his boldness. This was definitely new territory, but I couldn’t deny that I was enjoying it.
ME: Maybe I want you to.
There was a pause, and I watched the typing bubble appear and disappear, wondering what was going through his mind. My heart raced in anticipation, unsure of what to expect next. Then, my phone buzzed again—not with a message, but with a photo.
I opened it and stared at the image for a moment, a smile tugging at my lips. He was standing in what looked like a hallway, wearing a worn white T-shirt and a Yankees baseball cap. His hair was a little long, curling out from under the cap, and he had a faint mustache that gave him a laid-back, almost mischievous look. His smile was subtle but warm, like he wasn’t quite sure what to expect either.
MANHATTAN: Figured it’s only fair you see who you’re talking to.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t help but feel my heart skip a beat. He was more than I’d imagined—there was something so genuine and relaxed about him, and that easy confidence I’d sensed in our conversations was clearly just a part of who he was.
ME: Not bad, Manhattan. Not bad at all. MANHATTAN: Glad you approve. Now, your turn?
I felt a rush of nerves as I realized he was asking for a photo in return. This felt like a big step—more real than anything we’d done before. But there was also something exciting about it, about finally showing him who I was after all this time.
I took a deep breath, then snapped a quick selfie, trying to capture something that felt natural but not too staged. I hesitated only for a second before hitting send, my heart pounding as I waited for his reaction.
ME: Alright, but don’t judge too harshly.
Tumblr media
My phone buzzed almost immediately after I sent the photo. I could practically feel my pulse in my ears as I watched the screen, waiting for his response. It didn’t take long.
MANHATTAN: Wow.
I bit my lip, a small smile creeping onto my face. Just one word, but it was enough to make my stomach flip.
ME: "Wow" good, or "wow" bad? MANHATTAN: Definitely good. You’re beautiful, San Diego. I wasn’t prepared for that.
I felt my cheeks heat up at his words. There was something different about receiving a compliment from someone who’d only known me through words until now—someone who hadn’t seen my face but still wanted to know more about me.
ME: You’re just saying that. MANHATTAN: I’m really not. I mean it. I didn’t expect this whole wrong-number thing to turn into something like this, but I’m glad it did. ME: Me too. It’s been… nice, talking to you. Getting to know you. MANHATTAN: More than nice, if you ask me. But now that I’ve seen you, I kind of want to see more of you.
My heart skipped a beat at that. The idea of him wanting more, even though we’d only known each other through these messages, made something flutter inside me.
ME: More of me? How so? MANHATTAN: Not in a creepy way, I promise. Just… more of your thoughts, your stories. I like hearing about your day, what you’re up to. I guess I’m just curious about you. ME: You’re making me blush over here. MANHATTAN: Good. You’ve been doing that to me since day one.
I felt my face heat up even more, and I couldn’t help but smile. It was strange how this random guy from Manhattan, who I’d never even met, could make me feel this way.
ME: Well, if you’re really that curious, ask away. What do you want to know? MANHATTAN: That sounds perfect. What’s your favorite book? ME: That’s like asking a parent to pick their favorite child! How would you feel if I asked you your favorite hockey team? MANHATTAN: New York Rangers. Easy. Number 1 😉 ME: Alright, I'll take your word for it. MANHATTAN: So, tell me something else. What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t yet?
I laughed softly to myself, feeling that familiar warmth from our conversation. The idea of us just getting to know each other like this, little by little, was comforting. It felt safe and exciting all at once.
ME: I’ve always wanted to travel more. There’s a whole world out there, and I’ve only seen a tiny part of it. MANHATTAN: Where’s the first place you’d go? ME: Italy, I think. The food, the history, the art—I want to experience all of it. MANHATTAN: That sounds incredible. I’ve always wanted to see more of Europe, too. ME: Maybe one day we’ll both get there. Until then, I guess we’ll just have to keep texting about it. MANHATTAN: I’m more than okay with that, San Diego. Talking to you is the best part of my day. ME: Same here, Manhattan.
Tumblr media
As I set my phone down, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. There was no rush, no pressure—just a growing connection with someone who was quickly becoming more than just a stranger on the other end of a text. And for now, that was more than enough.
───── ❝ ❞ ─────
It had been almost a month since the night I saw Manhattan’s face for the first time, and our conversations had only gotten better since then. We talked almost every day, sharing little details about our lives, random thoughts, and sometimes just silence on the other end of the line when we were both too tired to text much. I was surprised by how close I’d grown to him, even without meeting in person.
One afternoon, I got an email from one of my professors that sent my heart racing. My university was offering a select group of students a fully-funded, three-day trip to New York City to attend a special literary conference. The idea was to network, attend workshops, and get a taste of the publishing world in one of the most vibrant cities in the world. And somehow, I’d been chosen.
As soon as I read the email, my mind went straight to Manhattan. The idea of being in the same city as him, even if I wasn’t planning on meeting up, was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. But as much as I wanted to share the news with him, a different thought crossed my mind—a surprise. What if I didn’t tell him? What if I showed up in his city and surprised him with the news?
The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. He’d been so open and sweet in our conversations, and I wanted to do something special. It felt like the perfect opportunity to catch him off guard, in a good way.
That evening, when I grabbed my phone to text him, I felt a little mischievous. I decided to keep the New York trip to myself for now.
Tumblr media
Tuesday, May 2, 2024today 8:45pm ME: Hey, how’s your day going? MANHATTAN: Not bad, just finished practice. How about you? ME: Same old, same old. Classes, assignments, you know the drill. MANHATTAN: Ah, the glamorous life of a student. Anything exciting on the horizon?
I bit my lip, resisting the urge to spill the beans.
ME: Nothing too crazy. Just trying to survive this semester. MANHATTAN: You’ve got this. I believe in you, San Diego. ME: Thanks, Manhattan. I appreciate that. MANHATTAN: Anytime. So, what’s on your mind? ME: Honestly, just thinking about how much I’d love to get away for a bit. You know, escape the routine. MANHATTAN: I hear you. If you ever find yourself in need of a change of scenery, you know where to find me 😉
I smiled to myself, knowing that in just a few weeks, I would be much closer to him than he realized.
ME: I’ll keep that in mind. MANHATTAN: Good. I’d be happy to play tour guide if you ever made it to the Big Apple. ME: I’ll have to remember that. You seem like you’d be a pretty good tour guide. MANHATTAN: Oh, I am. You’d be in excellent hands.
I chuckled, the idea of actually seeing him in person lingering in the back of my mind. But for now, I decided to keep the surprise to myself.
ME: I’ll bet. Maybe one day I’ll take you up on that offer. MANHATTAN: I hope so. It would be fun.
Tumblr media
A sense of anticipation buzzed through me. The thought of being in New York, in his city, and surprising him with my presence was exciting. It was something to look forward to, something just for me, and maybe for him too—when the time was right.

In an effort to get more minds on the number silly straw I am going to make this it’s own post.
So here we go.

So we know what those ones say, I however don’t have a fucking clue what the fuck is going on with red. Now I will admit that I have less knowledge on number based codes, so maybe I’m just stupid, but. I have been trying to crake this on and off all day yesterday.
So here are the numbers.
215 858 117 450 110 628 19 211 120 2265 216 951 25 256 27 532 212 506 18 1317 110 1137 221. 658 23 1330 210 231 118 929 112 2043
Now my first thought was A1Z26… but that can’t work because there is a 50 in here twice actually. So A1Z26 didn’t work.
Now I am bad at number codes so I went to my friend and they suggested Hex, and I tried that and nope mostly undefined, then I asked the same friend again and they said maybe Polybus Square, but I pointed out that these sets of numbers are set up in groups more than 2, so that was a bust. So I showed it to my fiancé, who just taught a summer class based on escape room, and thus taught kids about a shit ton of different ciphers and codes, some I told them about but others they new about already and some they had found researching for the class, so I thought that they may have an idea as to what it might be. And they took a cursory glance at it looked up some of the numbers, not all of them mind you, and said that they were area codes, and those of larger cities, both in and out of the US. And I was happy to have an answer, didn’t know how I would be able to use this to answer the code but I had something, so I went through and… not all of them were area codes, it actually broke down quite quickly, see they had checked the first 3 and then moved to look at some of the later ones that were different lengths and the “221. 658” group thinking it was a decimal and then told me that it seemed like all of them were area codes. Now we were back at square one. So I have no fucking clue where to go now.

Rabies facts
• neurons can try getting rid of infections, but they can’t interact with nervous system.
• Neurons are needed for feel, sensing, thinking, and movement, alongside other basic things in life
• they can’t replenish themselves after cell death
• immune cells like neutrophils often do jobs with some level of collateral damage
• neurons are a protected class of cells and evolved to tone down their immune response so we can not accidentally hurt them.
• so how nervous tissues protected if the immune system can’t get in to fight germs that make it there? by intercepting threats before they make it to neurons, they can continue to do their jobs safely.
• however, with rabies, the strategy fails
• rabies happens via animal bite, something that can penetrate many layers of tissue and circulation that are supposed to stop viruses from getting to neurons.
• in the earlier stages, treatment is somewhat more likely to be successful as it isn’t in the brain yet. if stopped before it gets there, you may survive.
• neurons are the longest cell type in the body. the distance for the rabies virus to travel to ur brain would be from florida to sweden. even so, time is scarce.
• rabies evolved a dastardly technique that hijacks the cellular transport system by binding into the protein dyenin
• dyenin usually transports useful cell cargo from the periphery of the cell towards its body; rabies evolved to stick to dyenin and hitch a ride up the neurons towards the brain.
• dyenin isn’t a slouch; it is small but can move at 800 nanometers per second. thus it can take rabies 14 days to move up a meter long neuron.
• if humansized, it would be 212 miles per hour or 342 kilometers per hour, as fast as a bullet train or arrow or eight usain bolts. and the closer a rabid animal bites you, the less distance it has to travel before your dead.
• this can explain the variation in the incubation period of rabies (20-90 days) where those infected have no symptoms.
• rabies races among neuronal tracks, setting up areas of concentrated viral centers called negri bodies
• negri bodies act as viral factories and pump out more copies of the rabies virus within neurons.
• the viral setup happens without our knowledge or interference
• neurons minimize distress signaling for the good of the body even if in bad shape. not only are they quiet signalers but the rabies virus inhibits interferon (an immune signal that normally alerts us to the site of infection) action
• the double whammy of immune interference means the infected neurons are nearly silent
• Apoptosis or programmed cell death is one more tool neurons have for infection. via apoptosis a cell undergoes a demolition of itself, disintegrating into smaller bubbles, denying the virus further access to its virus making machinery
• the smaller bubbles can then be safely scooped up by immune system cells
• however, rabies possibly evolved in a way to take even this cellular nuclear option away from the neuron. rabies strains causing less apoptosis have been found to be more infectious in mice, implying that rabies could have evolved to stop apoptosis in its tracks
• if rabies blew up neurons too early or frequently it might never make it to the brain without being cleared up by the immune system .
• rabies also evolved in a way to protect neurons during incubation.
• T-cells are small but extremely strong ; infected cells display pieces of the viral protein on their surface. when killer t cells recognize and bind that protein it releases a potent cocktail of enzymes that trigger cell death.
• rabies would inhibit neurons ability to fight it but the t cell would send it over the edge… however rabies has a cheat code.
• it stops apoptosis in neurons, but encourages it in t cells. its still unknown how it happens. the t cell would attempt to stop the virus only to be forced to self destruct
• Also, the rabies virus only has five genes.
• There is still hope: rabies is minmaxed for stealth, and if detected by the immune system before it goes to the brain, the risk of death from rabies is none. the vaccine also trains the immune system to better recognize the virus. however, if one waits too long, it’s over, and the vaccine is also expensive

Chapter 3 Available Now!
Tagging: @lemonlyman-dotcom and @kiwichaeng
Carlos is an IDIOT. He’s never listening to his sisters again. He’s never texting again. He’s going to become a monk and live a life of solitude.
He stares at the photo on his screen that is decidedly not Deacon from the bar. Deacon’s eyes didn’t sparkle like that, his smile didn’t look like literal sunshine, and his hair definitely wasn’t perfectly tousled in a way that makes Carlos’ fingers itch to run through it.
This guy looks vaguely familiar, but the name T.K. doesn’t ring a bell. Maybe he’s seen him at the grocery store? Or they go to the same coffee shop?
However he does or doesn’t know him, Carlos ha never felt more embarrassed in his entire life. His fingers fly as he types out an apology.
Carlos
[8:53pm] Oh my god. I’m so sorry.
Not Bar Guy
[8:53pm] No worries.
Did Deacon give him a fake number? Carlos gets up and searches his mail bin for the cocktail napkin he’d brought home from the bar. The number is still legible and Carlos’ eyes scan it quickly. 512…
Carlos checks the number he’d typed into his messages. 212.
Whoops.
How had that happened? Where the hell is the 212 area code even from? Definitely not Austin. Carlos sighs and shakes his head. Whatever. It’s done. He’ll just…text the right number and try again.
Maybe.
Or maybe not.
He flops back onto his sofa, his head a little swimmy from the whiskey. What a fucking mess. He lets his eyes slide shut. Maybe he’ll just go to sleep and when he wakes up this will all have been an alcohol induced nightmare.
His phone buzzes and he reluctantly opens his eyes to find another text message.
Not Bar Guy
[9:02pm] I definitely would remember kissing someone like you. I hope Deacon appreciated it.
He jerks upright, his heart pounding. Is this guy, T.K., is he…flirting?
Something about the words and the screen and the whiskey and the calming sound of British bakers in the background emboldens him and he types back.
Carlos
[9:03pm] I like to think he did. I’m a pretty good kisser.
Not Bar Guy
[9:04pm] I’m sure you are. Did he give as good as he got?
Carlos huffs out a breath of surprise, the pounding in his heart easing into a more relaxed sense of fun.
Carlos
[9:04pm] He was all right.
Not Bar Guy
[9:05pm] Just all right? That was a pretty hot pic for just all right.
He flushes. Yes. Okay. He’d been trying to make a little bit of a point. And maybe it was a tiny bit desperate. But he doesn’t want this guy, T.K., to know that.
Before he can formulate a good response another text comes through.
Not Bar Guy
[9:06pm] Just saying, you look like you deserve a little more than that.
Carlos snorts as he types back.
Carlos
[9:06pm] You’ve decided that from one picture?
Not Bar Guy
[9:06pm] What can I say? I call ‘em like I see ‘em. It’s a very convincing picture.
Carlos
[9:07pm] Thanks. Yours is pretty good too.
Not Bar Guy- T.K.
[9:07pm] Just pretty good? Ouch.
Carlos
[9:07pm] Ah I knew I could see a sensitive ego in those green eyes. How would you like me to describe it?
Not Bar Guy- T.K.
[9:08pm] Charming, captivating, endearing…
Carlos
[9:08pm] Pushy? Forward?
Not Bar Guy- T.K.
[9:08pm] Forward? Says the guy who sent a thirst trap to a complete stranger…
Carlos
[9:09pm] I thought you were Deacon!
T.K. doesn’t respond for long enough that Carlos wonders if he’s finally gotten tired of the conversation. It’s crazy how disappointed that makes him. He’s just about to call it a night and go to bed when his phone lights up once more.
Not Bar Guy- T.K.
[9:15pm] Sorry, call came in. Gotta go. This was fun though. We should do it again sometime.
A call? Carlos frowns and pulls T.K.’s picture up again, zooming in. He’d been so surprised and embarrassed he hadn’t even noticed the AFD logo on his shirt. This guy is local? Even though his number is clearly from somewhere else?
That’s probably why he looks vaguely familiar. They’ve likely been on some of the same calls. Big ones, obviously, otherwise he would have gotten a more decent look at the guy. There’s no way he would have forgotten those sea green eyes if they’d ever locked on his in person before.
The whiskey is making him sleepy, pulling his eyes downward so he drags himself upstairs and readies for bed.
If T.K.’s picture is the last thing he looks at before he closes his eyes…well, that’s nobody’s business but his own.
Carlos arrives for his shift the next day in a good mood. A really good mood.
“Morning,” he says, setting a coffee from the place down the block on Lexi’s desk.
“Morning,” she says, looking up in surprise. “What’s the occasion?”
“No occasion,” Carlos says, sitting down at his desk and booting up the desktop.
She eyes him suspiciously. “You look perky. More perky than usual.”
Carlos shrugs. “I had dinner with my sisters last night. We had a good time.”
“Mmm….no,” Lexi says. “This isn’t sisters happy. This is something else.”
“Okay, well if you figure it out, let me know,” he tells her. He pulls up his email and then tries to keep his voice casual, as if he hasn’t been planning his next words since the moment he woke up. “Hey, you don’t happen to know a firefighter named T.K. do you?”
It’s the first time he’s said T.K.’s name out loud and it makes his heart flutter. The letters feel familiar in his mouth and send sparks through his stomach. It’s stupid, but this is the feeling he was trying to convey to his sisters last night. Which is dumb. Because he literally knows nothing about this guy.
“T.K.? As in Strand?” Lexi asks.
“Um, yeah?” Carlos hedges. How many T.K.’s can there be in the AFD?
“Isn’t that the firefighter that got shot a couple months ago?” she asks. “Out of the 126?”
Oh. Oh.
That’s why he looked familiar. His picture had been on every news network, the talk of the department for over a week. Firefighter shot on duty. Crazy stuff.
“Right,” he says. “Now I remember.”
“I think his dad’s captain of that station,” Lexi says. “Why are you asking?”
“His name came up when I was out with a couple of the guys,” Carlos lies. “I couldn’t place him and thought you might remember.”
“That whole house was killed in that big explosion too, remember?”
“Right,” Carlos says, remembering it all too well. He knows people who’d gone to the scene that night and found total devastation. It was awful.
He waits for Lexi to go back to her work and then Carlos does something he promised himself he would never, ever do. He runs a background check for personal reasons.
T.K. stands for Tyler Kennedy. Carlos thinks of the picture he saved to his phone. T.K. is definitely a better fit. It’s fun and cute. Tyler Kennedy is…a little too stuffy for that rumpled hair and cheeky grin.
The shooting pops up obviously, but it’s not the only thing. Carlos clicks on a file from six months ago. T.K. was brought in for drunk and disorderly as well as assault and battery, but he blew a point zero and no charges were pressed. Huh. Interesting.
He clicks on the report of the shooting. It’s grim. Carlos feels sick as his eyes scan the words. Point blank range to the chest, a kid was involved…T.K. is damn lucky he survived.
He can’t stop thinking about it for the rest of the day. They head out on patrol and he can’t help secretly hoping they’ll get rolled to a fire call somewhere. Then he realizes how stupid that is. Fire is a twenty-four hour shift. If T.K. was on last night, he’s probably off the rest of today.
Carlos hits the gym after work and then the grocery store. Usually cooking puts him in a good headspace, but tonight he’s a million miles away. He can’t stop thinking about their conversation. Or the shooting. Is T.K. okay? Does he have permanent damage? He’s obviously back at work since he went out on a call last night, so does that mean he’s okay now?
This is so stupid, he doesn’t even know the guy. He shouldn’t care this much. It’s just, the thought of that beautiful face no longer being in the world isn’t sitting well with him.
He settles into bed intent on reading, trying to take his mind off of things. But his eyes keep drifting to his phone.
He should not do this. You don’t text random strangers out of the blue. That’s not normal. It’s not okay.
He picks up his phone and then almost drops it when it buzzes in his hand.
T.K.
[9:13pm] So. Did you get in touch with “Deacon”?
Carlos stares at his phone like it’s some kind of poisonous snake. Did he make this happen? What are the chances T.K. would text him at the exact moment he’d made up his mind to do the same?
Carlos
[9:14pm] What’s with the quotes?
T.K.
[9:14pm] I’m not convinced Deacon is a real person.
Carlos
[9:14pm] You think I kissed an imaginary man in a bar?
T.K.
[9:15pm] Alcohol can make you believe a lot of things…
Carlos
[9:15pm] I’d had one beer!
T.K.
[9:15pm] You’re avoiding the question.
Carlos
[9:16pm] I was at work all day today. There wasn’t time.
T.K.
[9:17pm] No time like the present. Do you want help? I’m very good with words.
Carlos snorts and types quickly.
Carlos
[9:17pm:] I’m not going to text him. That ship has sailed.
T.K.
[9:17pm] Good.
Carlos
[9:18pm] Good?
T.K.
[9:18pm] I feel a sense of responsibility now that I’ve seen your abs. Those deserve to be protected from the average Deacons of the world.
Okay this guy is straight up flirting. They’re about three texts away from a booty call. Which is not something Carlos does. But the shiver dancing up and down his spine whispers at him to make an exception.
He decides to change the subject before he does something stupid.
Carlos
[9:19pm] So you’re AFD?
T.K.
[9:20pm] Yep.
Carlos
[9:20pm] But you’re not from here.
T.K.
[9:21pm] Not even a little.
Over the next half hour Carlos learns that T.K. came with his dad from New York to rebuild the 126. And not just New York, but like New York, New York. The kind of New York that Carlos has only seen in movies and on TV.
Even through the phone Carlos can tell it wasn’t an easy move. T.K. seems to be glossing over the finer details, but he does talk about his dad’s cancer and how hard it was to leave his mom.
Carlos can’t even imagine uprooting his entire life to move to somewhere so different. His family is here. His entire life is here.
Carlos
[9:47pm] That must have been really hard. To leave your whole life behind.
T.K.
9:48pm: I needed the change. My dad saw it. There was nothing left for me there. But yeah. It wasn’t easy. Why does everyone here smile all the time? What’s with all the friendliness?
Carlos
[9:50pm] Well you never know when you might need to borrow somebody’s tractor or an extra pair of hands for calving season. You have to be nice to your neighbors so they’ll return the favor.
T.K.
[9:51pm] Ah, see. I knew that niceness didn’t come honestly. It’s all a ruse.
Carlos
[9:51pm] You got us.
Carlos glances at the clock and sighs.
Carlos
[9:52pm] Hey sorry, I have an early shift again tomorrow. I should probably call it a night.
T.K.
[9:52pm] A shift? At the…hospital? Coal mine? Car wash?
Carlos
[9:52pm] Those might be easier. I’m APD.
T.K.
[9:53pm] Wow you really withheld the evidence on that one officer.
Carlos
[9:53pm] Well I can’t tell you everything all at once. Where’s the fun in that?
T.K.
[9:54pm] I look forward to continuing to play detective.
Carlos sets his phone down and heads into the bathroom to get ready for bed. He catches sight of himself in the mirror and pauses. He’s smiling. A lovesick, dreamy smile. The sight makes him laugh at himself. He’s an idiot.

414 Day
It’s 414 Day, or Milwaukee Day! We celebrate Milwaukee on April 14 because the area code for the Milwaukee area is, you guessed it, 414! This year for 414 day we are celebrating a few of the spectacular movie palaces in Milwaukee that still act as theatres in some capacity today.
First shown here is Downer Theatre, located at 2589 N. Downer Ave on Milwaukee’s East Side. The Downer Theatre is Milwaukee’s oldest operating movie theatre in Milwaukee. It opened in 1915 and has been a movie theatre ever since! It may have a tile front now and a different marquee, but at its heart it is still a fine old movie theatre.
The second theatre shown here is the inside of Riverside Theater, located at 116 W Wisconsin Ave, opened in 1928 as a live performance center, and was a first-run movie theatre in the 1950s. Today, it is once again a live music and performance venue with a capacity of 2,450 people.
The third theatre shown here is the crème de la crème: the Warner Grand Theatre, located at 212 W. Wisconsin Ave. This theatre was opened in 1931 in place of the opulent Butterfly Theatre that once stood in its location. The theatre cost $2.5 million to build and was considered the most beautiful in the city. It continued as a movie theatre until the mid-1990s when it closed. In 2017, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) purchased the theatre and renovated it back to its original glory. The theatre opened again in 2021 as the home of the MSO now called the Bradley Symphony Center, and it is gorgeous!
There are other movie palaces still in use in Milwaukee, too, like the famous Oriental Theatre on the East Side, which underwent its own renovation in recent years, and the Avalon Theater in Bay View, which offers an “atmospheric” experience with a starry sky lit in the ceiling in the main theatre.
All of the images in black and white are from Milwaukee Movie Palaces by Larry Widen and Judi Anderson, published in 1986 by Milwaukee County Historical Society.
These theatres are part of Milwaukee’s history as well as a part of their present! I highly recommend visiting any one of them for a movie or performance soon.

I read survivor's quest
*spoilers*
When last we left our heroes I feel like the powers that be were really pushing Karrde/shada, but this book opens directly on karrde/booster. Delightful
So I think retconning that at some point offscreen Yoda told Luke not to get married is kinda dumb. Like, why would Luke be nervous about this NOW when everybody pretty much laid out their attachment issues in vision of the future. I think the much more hilarious version of events would be that Yoda intended to tell Luke not to get married because that was a Whole Thing for his dad but then took one look at Luke and was like “…a problem, this will not be”
Luke canonically not speaking Huttese will always be funny to me (like what did he take as a language credit on Tatooine? Shirywook?) but having him realize, at the age of forty, that he maybe should have taken a single level of a single Outer Rim trade language has me cracking up (also establishing that he can understand a dozen languages but listen I don’t believe that for a minute)
Is “how in the name of Outer Rim bug-eaters” a 2D clone wars reference or have I completely lost my mind
sEcReT sIsTeR?
Oh No there’s an Expanse
Hold up did this book literally just become Among Us? This reads like a game of among us
So Zahn obviously put a lot of effort into thinking through the map of this ship, and which areas the turbolifts connect, and how each group of combatants is moving through it, but I’m just imagining a Scooby doo hallway scene cuz I can’t be bothered to figure out Zahn’s mind palace
When Luke believes in trusting his instincts and his instincts are telling him to bring the eight-year-old into the warzone
“I'm an electronics technician. Like my father before me.”
General Drask, brilliant tactician, naturally suspicious: yeah my military signifier code is just 212 what of it
Mara really is her own therapist
I've decided that I actually find the "oh no there’s a clone of a major character" thing charming. EXCEPT for ep9
Luke deciding that the Jedi order rule about marriage was a skill issue *chef’s kiss*

[ID 1-5: a twitter thread by "Dave Rand":
#Brendan Fraser is a righteous dude.
In November 2007 our paychecks stopped. I was the FX lead on #Journey to the center of the earth for Meteor Studios in Montreal and was asked to convive my crew to stay and finish the picture with a guarantee we'd all get paid with overtime. We had a handful shots left.
As soon as we delivered the last shot, we were escorted out. It was two weeks before Christmas and we'd soon learn that there was no money. Meteor was declaring bankruptcy. They owed us 1,3 million dollars.
Variety put their best reporter on it and after many artists and support staff bravely came forward, I got this shirt terse email:
"The paper (Variety) has decided another visual effects company going bankrupt, however sad, is really not news worthy at any time."
I kept trying to get help from the Hollywood press. I realized it wasn't just Variety's decision, no one wanted to touch the story. My guess was the studio had put pressure on them to bury it.
Finally, I made that rejection quote from Variety the headline of our own press release, and hired a PR company to to release it. One artists, Eric Labranche, made a website for us to communicate with each other and vote, many others helped as well.
Then I tried to get the attention of Brendan Fraser, the star and executive producer of the movie. I called his "people" from IMDB pro. They said they'd tell him, they did not.
24 hours after the release, I got a threatening email from Variety and a call. I hung up. I then got a call from Les Normes, the labor dept in Canada. They told me not to go to the press it would ruin their case. I hung up on them too. Then the phone rang again and it was this fast talking New York City gal with a heavy Brooklyn accent. She was excited that I'd call Fraser's people and had gotten no reponse from him.
It was page six of the post, the gossip page, but we'd take it. She said the story would be live on the website within an hour. Exactly one hour later there it was: lnkd.in/erbDVK2z
My phone rang as I was reading the piece, a 212 area code, I answered to thank the girl, but a man answered and he said. "Is this Dave Rand?" I said. "Yes". "This is Brendan Fraser, what the fuck is going on?"
He had no idea that artists were not paid on his movie. He listened intently, asked a lot of questions and promised to stay he would call me regularly until this this was solved. First, he called the Post to tell all: lnkd.in/ewPE_w5E
A vfx wave began to form. Brendan kept his promise, he publically campaigned for us. The media, especially Variety, even started to cover our story. Thank you David Cohen.
We finally got 80% of our almost 2 years later.
To quote the great Steve Hulett: "What runs the world isn't what's right, or who's the richest, it's leverage, and who has it."
We had none, but Mr. Fraser gave us wings. He's a righteous dude.
These days, I'm very selective, if I've chose to work there you can bet they're moving in the direction.

Task
This week’s assignment involves decision trees, and more specifically, classification trees. Decision trees are predictive models that allow for a data driven exploration of nonlinear relationships and interactions among many explanatory variables in predicting a response or target variable. When the response variable is categorical (two levels), the model is a called a classification tree. Explanatory variables can be either quantitative, categorical or both. Decision trees create segmentations or subgroups in the data, by applying a series of simple rules or criteria over and over again which choose variable constellations that best predict the response (i.e. target) variable.
Run a Classification Tree.
You will need to perform a decision tree analysis to test nonlinear relationships among a series of explanatory variables and a binary, categorical response variable.
Data
Features are computed from a digitized image of a fine needle aspirate (FNA) of a breast mass [K. P. Bennett and O. L. Mangasarian: "Robust Linear Programming Discrimination of Two Linearly Inseparable Sets", Optimization Methods and Software 1, 1992, 23-34].
Dataset can be found at UCI Machine Learning Repository
In this Assignment the Decision tree has been applied to classification of breast cancer detection.
Attribute Information:
id - ID number
diagnosis (M = malignant, B = benign)
3-32 extra features
Ten real-valued features are computed for each cell nucleus: a) radius (mean of distances from center to points on the perimeter) b) texture (standard deviation of gray-scale values) c) perimeter d) area e) smoothness (local variation in radius lengths) f) compactness (perimeter^2 / area - 1.0) g) concavity (severity of concave portions of the contour) h) concave points (number of concave portions of the contour) i) symmetry j) fractal dimension ("coastline approximation" - 1)
All feature values are recoded with four significant digits. Missing attribute values: none Class distribution: 357 benign, 212 malignant
Results
Generated decision tree can be found below:
In [17]:img
Out[17]:
Decision tree analysis was performed to test nonlinear relationships among a series of explanatory variables and a binary, categorical response variable (breast cancer diagnosis: malignant or benign).
The dataset was splitted into train and test samples in ratio 70\30.
After fitting the classifier the key metrics were calculated - confusion matrix and accuracy = 0.924. This is a good result for a model trained on a small dataset.
From decision tree we can observe:
The malignant tumor is tend to have much more visible affected areas, texture and concave points, while the benign's characteristics are significantly lower.
The most important features are:
concave points_worst = 0.707688
area_worst = 0.114771
concave points_mean = 0.034234
fractal_dimension_se = 0.026301
texture_worst = 0.026300
area_se = 0.025201
concavity_se = 0.024540
texture_mean = 0.023671
perimeter_mean = 0.010415
concavity_mean = 0.006880
