True optimism At the time when the Semmering Railway was being built as part of the Southern Railway, linking Vienna and the Mediterranean Sea, between 1848 and 1856 no railway engine could climb the 2.8% incline. Carl Ghega, mastermind of the Southern Railway, was convinced that engineering would solve the problem.
