Paula Rego is a Portuguese artist born in Lisbon in 1936. She left Portugal to study in her youth and went on to attend the Slade School of Fine Arts in London. At Slade, she became a member of the London group with members like David Hockney and founded by (among others) Ethel Sands and Nan Hudson. There, Paula also meet her future husband, Victor Willing. They lived in Portugal together and had 3 children. Paula Rego kept working on her art but without major commercial success at the time. After a failed business venture and Victor’s diagnosis with MS, they would return to London where they would live together until her husband’s death in 1988. That year she had a retrospective at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon and at the Serpentine Gallery in London and her career started taking off. Paula Rego’s art is mostly inspired by fairy tales and folk stories. After attending Jungian therapy to help her cope with depression, she started exploring some of her emotions and thoughts in her art and through this stories, by changing the perspective from which they are told. A feminist and abortion rights defender, her work is populated by strong female characters who don’t match or intentionally go against society's expectation of what women’s behaviour, bodies and attitudes should be. She keeps on creating art until today in her London studio assisted by her long time model and muse Lila Nunes. A very small painting on canvas that I did in New York City around the year 2000. This painting of mine just appeared in an international auction taking place in Connecticut. #IvanJenson #PopArt #GeminiTwins #BlueEyes #GreenEyes #TinyArt #SmallCampus #MiniatureArt #BoldColors #Auction #Artist #Faces #Portrait #GalleryArt #SohoGallery #ChelseaGallery #GrandRapidsMichigan #MuseumOfModernArt #NewYorkCity #MillennialArt #20CenturyArt #21st-centuryArt (at Naugatuck, Connecticut) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxyaqHgH0Yi/?igshid=vug7iuobgn5x

Part 3/3 In the early 50s, she started experimenting with azulejo –Portuguese tiles. One of her most well-known pieces is ‘O Mar’, a ceramic tile mural in Avenida Infante Santo, Lisbon. She was commissioned to design what ended up being the longest project of her life — the tile panels for the 5 initial stations of the Lisbon Metro, for which construction works just began. Her husband was the architect in charge of the project at the time. She started designing the first station in 1957, and kept working on the same project until 1972. Maria Keil believed that art should be there for everybody. Tiles were seen as a low-brow, lesser art. By taking this project with her vision and dedication, she ended up playing a crucial role in the renovation of the contemporary tile in Portugal. She kept working until her late years. Maria Keil died in 2012, aged 98, in Lisbon. #herchive #womenofart #womanartists #mariakeil #tiles #portuguesetiles #illustration #illustrationart #portugueseart #femaleartist #painting #modernism #portuguesefemaleartist #womenempowerment #lisbon #herstory #feminism #visualart #artistsofig #womenmakinghistory #20centuryart #femaleart #graphicdesign #patterndesign #pattern (at Silves, Faro, Portugal) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9OrzLUoLgI/?igshid=1kesza6x4aep2

Part 2/3 It was around the time she turned 19, when she married an architect called Francisco Keil do Amaral, that she claims she learned the most about art — by spending time at the cafés, discussing ideas for long periods with the group of artists she met through her husband. In 1936, she started working in advertisement at Estúdio Técnico de Publicidade (ETP), where she met and befriended other fellow artists and designers. She worked in numerous illustrations for posters, advertising, books and magazines. #herchive #womenofart #womanartists #mariakeil #tiles #portuguesetiles #illustration #illustrationart #portugueseart #femaleartist #painting #modernism #portuguesefemaleartist #womenempowerment #lisbon #herstory #feminism #visualart #artistsofig #womenmakinghistory #20centuryart #femaleart #graphicdesign #patterndesign #pattern (at Silves, Faro, Portugal) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9HfO4To4ug/?igshid=t1x8zm0aug00

Part 1/3 Maria Keil was a Portuguese artist, part of the second wave of Portuguese modernist painters. She was born in Silves — Algarve in 1914. Throughout her life, she experimented with a variety of media — painting, drawing, illustration, ceramic tiles, graphic design, advertising, furniture design, decoration, wall tapestry, costume design, and stage design — but it was in the fields of illustration and tile design that her work gained more notoriety. She was a prolific illustrator, having worked with multiple writers. She also wrote and illustrated a few books herself, for both children and adults. After what she recalls as a troubled childhood (marked by her parents’ early divorce and frequently changing houses) she moved to Lisbon to study at the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon at the age of 15. Despite the initial belief that this could be a turning point in her life, she ended up disappointed as she realized that her training would mostly consist in making copies of other decorative designs and little more. Paula Rego suffered from depression throughout her life and always described herself as being very shy and having trouble speaking her mind. Through art she would  express the feelings and thoughts she kept inside and that didn’t match the expectation of what a woman at the time should feel and think. #womenofart #womanartists #womanpainting #paularego #portugueseart #femaleartist #painting #surrealism #portuguesefemaleartist #sladeschoolofart #womenempowerment #mentalhealth #emotionalintelligence #herstory #herchive #feminism #visualart #inspiringquotes #inspirationartist #womenmakinghistory #20centuryart #casadashistoriaspaularego #femaleart #folktale #fear https://www.instagram.com/p/B13gZ3ClJ7D/?igshid=pi1s91pfbpln
