thinkingthinking about all the accidental kills .. javi falling down the ice, jackie falling asleep outside at the mouth of winter, crystal falling off the cliff .. and the nat tragedy .. and how accidental doesn’t mean blameless .. how “accidental” is so perfect for them to make up a /story/ that absolves them
the “accidental” is so convenient to feed the myth of IT. they basically form a structure/situation where death becomes a highly likely possibility and try to do it the best way they can so that it doesn’t become Murder. so that it’s not Them but the Wilderness who chose.
nobody being really responsible for nat’s death is so … utterly bleak. maybe no one is to blame, maybe the big wilderness IT is, maybe they just wanted to “”play”” into the game, give it weapons and elements of story and see how it went, keep the fuel going, maybe they wanted to gamble, maybe it’s all they know.

Not me only now overanalysing this shot like look at the shadows. It’s actually Jack and Vega who are trapped. Daniel is right where he needs to be.

For weeks now I’ve been telling this joke (mostly to myself) that’s just “I love it when people ask me if I like jjk because the honest answer is no” because I carry these little jjk figures with me everywhere and it’s true I don’t really like jjk that much BUT NOW I CANT POST THAT JOKE BC PEOPLE WILL THINK I AM JUST UPSET ABOUT THE NEW CHAPTER SPOILERS AND I AM BUT THAT ISNT THE REASON
#jujutsu kaisen#jjk spoilers#kind of I’m hinting at them#I stopped reading jjk at chapter 209 bc I was literally making myself sick with stress#I also refuse to watch the anime for this reason#I think jjk is well written and I think it tells a very compelling and honest story about the dangers tradition can pose#but honestly about midway through I just felt like I was dragging myself through the series for the sake of completion#and I still feel that way#but I still interact with the fandom and stuff idk I really shouldn’t#also I know the whole ‘jjk is making me too sad’ is RICH coming from number one chainsaw man enjoyer#but it’s different and I really actually want to write a whole thing about why bc it’s very interesting to me#I love story structures and meta analysis#anyway tag rant over byeeeee💕#read my terrible words

victor madness combat masterpost
everything we know about victor, a co-op exclusive project nexus character
theres a lot of things people dont know about them!! like their connection with the maker, how they interact with the audience, etc. however this information is intentionally kept obscure for narrative reasons (ill explain later) so its understandable if you didnt know about this
full post under the cut since its long ==v
SECTION 1: BURGER GILS
the first appearance of victor was on the official burger gils website, under the "updates" section
the first news update, #207, says that rich (a character we see in "power play") is no longer the employee of the month, thus giving the title to victor.

the next prominent update is #209, which states victor has mysteriously gone missing and gil is setting up a hotline for their return.

judging by the next and final update alluding to the fall of nexus city, and that they can "finally open their doors" due to health inspectors being inoperable, we can assume victor went missing beforehand since the restaurant was functioning at the time of the hotline being released.
the reason for their disappearance is still unknown, but that can lead us into the next and more important section:
SECTION 2: THE MAKER (YES, REALLY)
victor, by the laws of the universe, is not meant to exist in nevada. they are an anomaly.
similarly to the maker, they are likely trying to avoid being spotted by the machine or some other "indestructible nightmare".
we learned in a stream that the maker talks to victor, and won't allow their "story" to be told.
"maybe vic, but his story can't be told. the maker won't allow it. that's why the maker talks to vic all the time. he'll never get near the plot."
victor stays as far away from the narrative as possible, choosing to hide as a co-op exclusive character for MPN. krinkels always emphasizes that there's a meta reason for this. even in things like little doodles, victor seems to want to hide from the public eye.

victor reappeared after the city fell, and was found and taken into sq. there is a reason doc wanted victor to join sq, and that doc knows of their importance. however, krinkels wants to keep this part of the story untold too.
SECTION 3: PERSONALITY + ADDITIONAL MATERIAL
not much comments here since ill leave these up to interpretation. heres some dialogue + other things from them that show their personality.
thanks to CondescendingChaos48s self eater dialogue video for providing these :D - mpn devchat clip of wallium doing a victor voice impression - burger gil plushie ad, which victor appears in
-this screenshot
-victor may be the youngest of the main cast
-the burger gil arg, which victor briefly appears in (their involvement is described in the first section)
and thats all! do what you want with this info, i just want to shed light on stuff about victor that isnt as well known

2024 BL Wrap Up
Welcome to my 2024 bl Wrap Up!
A quick look at my stats this year, so that we can get it over with: I watched 60 BLs, most of which are from 2024. 24 of them came from Thailand, 15 from Japan, 14 from South Korea, six from Taiwan and one from China. I created 209 gifsets and had to deal with several heartbreaks.
Somehow 2024 was an intense year for BLs, at least for me. Even though I watched significantly less than in 2023 and skipped many series to save them for later, many of the series I watched touched me, both positively and negatively.
But what did the year actually look like for me? What are my thoughts today, looking back on 2024?
China, Japan and South Korea fought it out to see who could bring the saddest characters to life and write the saddest stories. On the one hand, we have China's re-entry into the BL world with Blue Canvas Of Youthful Days.
A series whose characters have suffered so much, healed together, supported each other, only to end up with a double noble idiocy and and a time skip so they see each other again in the last two minutes of the series and we get a half-hearted happy ending. I would have loved this series much more without this giving up your own happiness in hopes the other one is happy. Just talk to each other and find a solution together. Please.
Secondly, there is Our Youth from Japan.
Both characters suffer at the hands of their parents. One with domestic violence, prejudices and hatred and the other with absent parents, disinterest in his own personality, prejudices and separating parents. In both cases, they are neglected and find the support and trust in each other that they miss in the world. They feel misunderstood and learn about their own desires and needs through their affection for each other. The series is not yet finished, but it is one of the bluest series this year.
But Japan is not entering the race with just one series. Happy To The End is also a contender for a top spot at the Hurt-Mountain.
The story of two maltreated souls who somehow manage to find a little love and trust in a life full of darkness and pain. The series had left me with strong feelings and a dear friend gifted me the Mangas for Christmas. I can't wait to dive into their story again! And don't forget our super-villain of the year! This series had it all!
South Korea entered the race with Let Free The Curse Of Taekwondo.
I don't know who suffered more in the end, us as viewers who watched the suffering of both protagonists without being able to give them a warming hug and to tell them everything is going to be fine or the protagonists themselves and their attempts to hold up their own walls and tear down the other one’s. Those two have come a long way to at least talk to each other again. Such a good storytelling!
Meanwhile, Thailand thought it would be nice to start a little competition to see which of their series could be the fluffiest of them all. ThamePo is not included in this calculation, because I'm too biased when it comes to this series. They could present me green slime dancing in the rain while Po is staring at it lovingly, and I would celebrate it.
At first, I thought Every You, Every Me was going to easily win the race, but suddenly, they bring in death and the series is elevated to a weird, way too complex and under-explained meta-level where actors are trying to end their relationship because reasons?
I would have liked to have seen more of the multiverses in which our soulmates fall in love with each other again and again. The first four episodes were so good and so different than our usual bls. I couldn't stop loving it. But I guess the trophy will go to Your Sky after all in this case.
God, I'm blushing and giggling to myself with every episode. Fah and Rak are just so cute together. The series is pure fluff so far and even though I don't know what to expect from the remaining episodes, I know that the two of them will surely be happy together in the end.
The award for best performance goes by far to War Wanarat from Jack & Joker.
His diversity and ability to immerse himself in the different personas and play them believably was great cinema this year. The series might have some plot-holes or characters who could have had more screen time together, but the series was interesting and Joke was the best!
And while we're on the subject of Jack & Joker and Your Sky, let's move on to the trophy for this year's best kiss. The crown would have gone to Jack & Joker, but then Your Sky came around the corner with this great first kiss and wow. I was in a bit of a quandary until I remembered that this is my recap. So I'll just make two categories.
The best and softest first kiss this year goes to Your Sky.
The best and hungriest first kiss this year goes to Jack & Joker.
Kidnap didn't necessarily have an exciting and well thought-out plot, but Ohm's Puppy Eyes were unbeatable.
And yet ThamePo clearly won the staring contest with only three episode aired. I mean, hello? Who wouldn't fall head over heels in love with one of them when they look at you like that?
And contrary to all assumptions, neither Kidnap nor ThamePo has the biggest baby girl of the year! No, this is what Taiwan brought to the screen with The On1y One and let's not kid ourselves, Tian loved making everything possible for his Wang and taking care of him.
And who would have thought that the most romantic scene of the year came just close before the year ends? ThamePo! What have you done you beautiful, beautiful series! And how could the remembering of a phone number be the most romantic shit of the year? And yet here I am loving everything about this scene and the series. Oh the wait was so worth it!
While in most cases it was clear that the couples would get together at the end of the series and our little BL bubble would remain intact, Japan made it a little harder for us to predict a happy ending. 25 Ji, Akasaka de probably thought it was funny to play with our emotions like that. My Strawberry Film was probably lying in the corner, laughing at the fact that we believed its misdirections about being a bl. And in Hidamari ga Kikoeru, they remembered at the end that it is a bl and that the audience has been waiting for a long time to see the protagonists together in a scene again and conjured up an unspectacular happy ending with one of the most uncomfortable looking hugs in bl history.
Taiwan, on the other hand, didn't care whether their series had a happy ending or not and simply cut one of the best series of the year with strong acting and a great story in the middle without knowing whether there would be a second season.
And so The On1y One hangs somewhere in cliffhanger limbo and we viewers are desperate enough to search the internet for bad English translations of the story to at least find a little bit of closure. It's worth reading the bad translation though.
And while the world around me was already falling apart, Taiwan and South Korea were fighting over who could tear my heart into smaller pieces by the end of the series. While I was obsessed with Unknown and even bought the final episodes as early excess,
Love For Love's Sake managed to crush my heart into the finest powder. Never before have I been so heartbroken as after this series. I didn't know what to do with myself and my emotions for days. It was terrifying and yet so beautiful. One of the strongest heartbreaks I've ever felt. Clearly the best series this year for me.
Quietly and secretly, Thailand then surprised us with a pretty good adaptation of the much-loved Japanese classic Cherry Magic. And Tay and New surprised me with the fact that they can actually kiss each other without looking like they're in pain. The chemistry was on point and their love scene at the end... wow!
I also discovered a new format for myself in 2024. While I've always stayed away from watching shows on my phone because it's just too small, I came across Match Play on social media and just knew I had to watch it.
And that's how I slipped into the universe of vertical mini-series. My ADHD brain is happy about the short, entertaining nature of the episodes. And yet I was so hooked by the series that it's now my most rewatched show. And that's despite the fact that I don't really like doing that, i.e. repeating series. But I can watch it whenever, whereever.
I was able to watch with my best friend how two people fell in love with each other and are still together and happy.
The Boyfriend was an experience that I would never want to miss, not only do my friend and I now regularly watch shows together, but the show briefly gave me back my faith in love, not for me, but in general.
I finally found another show this year where I really liked OffGun.
The Trainee was a great show with good humor, great characters, honest problems, and an Off that I actually liked in his role. I don't often get that with him.
I had to learn once again that South Korea is not yet ready to introduce a queer couple in one of their big productions. The hints were there and so was the chemistry!
But unfortunately there was no happy ending for my poor heart and Sergeant Kim in Sweet Home 3. But he did make it onto my phone as a wallpaper. That's something too, isn't it?
But South Korea also surprised and sent a terrific adaptation of the novel Love In The Big City to the screen with a cast to be proud of and a story that was worthy of being filmed so well. The biggest plot twist for me came when it was revealed that No YeongSu was a toxic and utterly homophobic asshole. God, I loved the two of them together and would have loved to see No YeongSu come to terms with his own sexuality, but the show has just been too realistic for that. But their scenes together? Chef's kiss! The best lift of the year!
But not everything that tried to shine this year was gold.
On the dark side, Japan and Thailand both tried to piss me off this year by letting series that started so well and would have definitely been my favorites, had they kept it up, hit the wall in the middle or near the end. Seriously Thailand, what was that about Last Twilight? And Japan, I hear the sunspot was so good until you decided to put in a character that was so unlikable that many of us just got angry and until you decided that our protagonists just couldn't have any positive character development and just stopped communicating with each other. And that had been their strength all along!
Wandee Goodday wanted to be this cool show, with sex positivity and sex buddies, but quickly became a romantic sludge that was as predictable as every other GmmTV story. I'm not saying that's always a bad thing, just a little unnecessarily schmaltzy and sweet at times.
South Korea gave us a brief scare once when it thought it wanted to produce a series together with Thailand. I don't know, but I just can't take Mew seriously since then. Love Is Like A Cat was bad. The acting was really bad, the plot didn't know what it was supposed to do on set any more and it simply left midway through the series, never to be seen again.
Unfortunately, this didn't improve the acting and so it was more a case of just not giving up. Sometimes I also wonder what's wrong with me that I keep watching those series and why I'm doing this to myself (yes, I'm looking at you Dinosaur Love).
What 2024 really had a few of, however, were stories with a very unique plot. There's Love For Love's Sake, where someone gets a second chance through a computer game. Or Century Of Love, in which a centenarian in a young body waits for the love of his life and is surprised when they are reborn as a man.
Or Caged Again. I'll wait until I can binge it myself, but the story of a penguin and a panther who fall in love as humans sounds great! Or 4 Minutes, in which time was so confusing that I lost track at one point. Or who could forget our first Omegaverse series Pit Babe?
Which was somehow a little lacking in Omegas and made people questioning everything after finding out that Pavel wouldn’t be on top. Or Playboyy, a series that I think is underrated and which style is so artistically pleasing. Yes, the story was messy af, but the manner in which this series was shot and filmed was exquisite. And Love In The Big City and The Nipple Talk, two very good, very adult series that I wish could get more attention.
All in all, 2024 was a great year with interesting stories and fascinating characters that I will certainly be returning to from time to time.
And with you, my dear friends and followers, creators and viewers. Your presence in 2024 has sweetened my year and made my feed happy! Thank you to all of you out there!
May 2025 treat you well and delight us all with great new stories!

Hello. First of all, I'm so happy I discovered you blog. I just read your answer about RM and intimacy. I was wondering what you meant by "the weird shift with M/B" ? Did personal issues affect the writing ? I must admit that I know nothing about The OC BTS, except that Misha revealed that she was bullied on set.
Hiya! Hmm so yes personal issues started affecting the writing by at least s2. Many believe that the way Ryan screams at Marissa in 209 about her behavior is really M/B coded. So much that in the podcast Melinda Clarke said that it felt like Ben yelling at Mischa. At this time MB was dating party boy Brandon Davis and spending time in his circle that included Paris Hilton and the like.
My personal feeling, and supported by a few subtle examples on the podcast and in some M interviews, is that Mischa and Ben hooked up a little during s1 and the fallout of that didn't go well. Their age difference being what it was (17 vs. 24) is partly why I believe that will never be confirmed by either party.
Then in early s3 they were getting along better after she broke up with Brandon but before she started dating Cisco Adler. Their chemistry in 301-303 reflects that (the beach scenes in 301 and 303 were only filmed a few days apart).
I figure they had some sort of blowup during the season that coincided with their characters conveniently not being intimate (s3 is incredibly sexless until 318 anyway). Obviously the writers are gonna write whatever they want but it's assumed in the fandom that awkwardness between M/B that season contributed to fewer romantic scenes. And of course RM are being written as staid, on-the-verge-of-divorce 17 year olds, but still. The lack of intimacy is astounding. The chem being back in 314 is an anomaly that I'm trying to figure out actually, lol. Supposedly the last time M or B saw one another was when they filmed the final scene of 325. And they avoid mentioning the other like the plague.
As for weirdness with the intimacy scenes in late s3, Cam was a douchebag to Mischa (this is an illuminating read) and Nikki Reed (17, pushing 18) was even younger than Mischa (20) having sex scenes with Ben who was 28. At this part of the season (and starting in s2, really) the writing takes really sharp meta shots at Mischa through Marissa. Like she's a strung out party girl, etc.

Jamboree Scout Mundial

This take works for, like, a Squirtle, or even an Espeon.
Metagross?
This guy?
You don't get a Metagross by being fun pals with it. You get it by getting into and winning a lot of fights. With a Beldum. (Who, canonically, is similar to Magikarp in terms of "you're gonna have to put up with some bullshit to make this pokemon do anything useful" without being close to as cute.)
These aren't cuddly pets, these are top-flight dogfighting champions in a world built on combat sports. "Literally no reason"? That squishy primate is probably earning a living off sending you into brutal fights against the toughest enemies available. That Metagross would probably have CTE if it wasn't literally made of metal.
But wait, it gets worse! One of the moves Metagross learns is Explosion, and this is part of the reason it was valuable in older pokemon metas. That's right - one of the most useful things you could do with your Ed-209-looking quadrupedal metal monster was to tell it to explode as violently as it can, taking out itself and everything around it. I just can't really imagine that that's fun for the Pokemon doing it.
Honestly... the conclusion I draw from this is that pokemon like Alakazam and Metagross are just really into violence, almost certainly because they were captured as children and trained up in a system where they are constantly rewarded for being good at violence. Their trainers have traumatized them into loving their violent servitude, and all the IQ in the world won't necessarily teach you that your worldview and the culture you were raised up in are evil, wrong, violent, or anything but normal.
Trainer culture is so fucked up. And then they have the absolute gall to come on here and pretend that their attack dogs are all lovey-dovey with them... Disgusting.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go to the daycare. I put my favorite Eevee in there with an amorphous slime entity that can turn into a genderbent clone last week, so needless to say if there isn't an egg waiting for me, Fluffles is gonna have some explaining to do. I haven't even made half of the possible eeveelutions! Ooh, maybe this time it'll have one of the more interesting genetic defects!
"why don't super-intelligent Pokemon like Metagross and Alakazam just take over humanity if they're smarter than us" imagine that a random primate gave you free housing, food, and medical care for the rest of your life for literally no reason other than they want to be friends with you and I think you'll understand

My 2024 in Film: October, p.1
Every October I do my annual 31 Days of Spooky Movies challenge wherein I attempt to watch a spooky movie every day of October and I can't count anything I've counted in a previous October.
It started many years ago as my attempt to spread the fun of Halloween into the rest of the month. And has become a fun way to force myself into broadening my Horror horizons.
Unfortunately for me I watched a lot of them this month and so listing them all is going to take some time. So I suppose I had better get started.
* = rewatched
207.
You Are Not My Mother
(2021)

— Horror Directed by: Kate Dolan
A strange incident forces an Irish teenager to question whether her mother's increasingly erratic behaviors are the result of mental illness or something far darker.
On one hand it feels great to start the challenge off with a banger.
On the other hand it can be tough when you begin a challenge with the bar set extremely high.
I loved this movie. The performances, the mood, the themes, the way they build the horror; all of it was phenomenal.
Reminds me a lot of one of my favorite films Pyewacket (2017). With that one I've noticed that there's a big difference between how people thought about that one based on what their childhood was like. And I suspect there might be a similar reaction to this one.
As someone who definitely can relate to being a kid and being routinely terrified of what a parent might do and never knowing which version of them you might be seeing, this film hits me on a really primal level.
I really hope Kate Dolan goes on to make more movies because she's got a ton of talent.
208.
She Came From the Woods
(2022)

— Horror Comedy Directed by: Erik Bloomquist
It's 1987 and a group of summer camp counselors accidentally-on-purpose revive the killer nurse from the camp's ghost stories.
I started off the month on the high note then immediately came crashing back down to earth.
I watched this entirely because I saw William Sadler was in it and was curious what he was up to, but I was quickly made to regret that decision.
The writing is just truly, truly painful. Nothing really makes any sense. The villain is terrible. And there's this character named Dylan who just makes you want to throw your TV out the window.
209.
Scooby-Doo
(2002)

— Spooky Comedy Mystery Directed by: Raja Gosnell
The Mystery Inc. crew reunites after a long break up to solve a mystery at a spooky-themed island resort.
I watched the Scooby-Doo cartoons back in the day, so I was never inclined to watch this thing. But I know a ton of people with a lot of nostalgia for it.
It's also funny to me that I've met a lot of people who were introduced to Matthew Lillard from this movie. This has always been funny to me, because when this had come out I was already a fan of his because of his performances in SLC Punk (1998) and Hackers (1995) [and possibly Scream (1996), but I can't remember if I had seen that one yet at this point].
My friend and I decided this year we'd finally get around to seeing what the fuss was about.
The casting for this movie is pretty phenomenal, but I just couldn't get into it. It is both trying to stick to the format of the old cartoon while also doing a modern interpretation while also doing a meta twist on the cartoon? And I just feel like it would have been better to either fully commit to the old formula or fully commit to doing something entirely different.
210.
Nosferatu the Vampyre
(1979)

— Horror Drama Directed by: Werner Herzog
Warner Herzog's 1979 remix of F.W. Murnau's 1922 remix of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula.
Admittedly this was an odd follow-up to watch right after Scooby-Doo.
I don't really have a lot of thoughts on this one. And yet weirdly enough it ranked really high on my list of all the things I watched this month.
It's one of those movies that doesn't exactly vibe with me. There's no real characters that I was particularly interested in. The plot is basically just a stripped down version of Dracula.
And yet Herzog is bringing such a depth of artistry to it that I can't help but respect it.
Not the sort of thing you'll want to watch if you want a thrilling bit of Horror, but certainly a very well made film.
211.
Last Night at Terrace Lanes
(2024)

— Horror Thriller Directed by: Jamie Nash
On a bowling alley's final night before closing for good the people at the alley find themselves under attack by a strange cult out for blood.
This was also on the same day as Scooby-Doo and Nosteratu the Vampyre so clearly my friend and I are all about that that shuffle life.
After watching this I was pretty disappointed. It is not very good. Really a very messy story. They are trying to do somewhere in the ballpark of 4 different things in this:
Comedy
Family Drama
Romance
Horror
I'm of the mindset that anytime you add a genre to your story you are upping the challenge rating considerably, which is typically why good movies have either picked a lane or are just that talented.
Take Edgar Wright's movie Shaun of the Dead for instance. At certain times it hits all the same genre beats that this one was after. But it picked a lane. It is a comedy first and foremost. Whenever it hits one of the other beats it is for some flavor and either move the story forward and provide character development.
Here they are trying to do everything all at once. And they just don't have the talent to back that up.
However, it still was FAR from the bottom of my ranked list for the month (which probably says a lot about the quality of films I watched) and that's because its sin—in my mind—was one of being over-ambitious more so than one of being wholly untalented.
While the plot is a total mess, and the pacing is a mess, and they set themselves up as an ensemble and then killed almost everyone immediately, and they didn't have a decent budget; it is still leagues beyond some of the shit shows I've seen.
Which just goes to show that I am the wrong person to ask about bad movies, because the depths of film that I have encountered are far beyond where the casual movie watcher dares to tread.
The parts about the cult are terrible though. I've gotta admit that. They are so dumb and boring. But I kind of liked the main actress. And the queer romance bits and even the father-daughter stuff? Could've been better, but not too shabby for the minor leagues this film is running in.
...actually I kind of thoroughly hated every character other than the dad and the two main girls...
And yet I still put this movie at #22 out of the 56 movies I watched this month soo...
It was a bit of a rough month, y'all.
212.
Black Friday
(2021)

— Horror Comedy Directed by: Casey Tebo
Things are about to go from bad to worse for the over-worked retail workers trying to make it through a Black Friday at a toy store when a strange sickness starts to turn their customers into even more blood-thirsty monsters than they already were.
I watched this entirely because Bruce Campbell was in it.
It was a mistake.
Just a really dumb movie. It clearly cared more about its practical effects then it did its script. Because the effects were pretty decent, but the story and the characters are just awful.
Bruce Campbell is truly the only thing decent in the entire movie. And he's not in it enough to pull it back from the brink.
213.
Dance of the Dead
(2008)

— Comedy Horror Directed by: Gregg Bishop
On a dark and dangerous prom night it's up to a group of teenage outcasts to save their town from a zombie outbreak.
Filing this under films that didn't do any research and have a very limited knowledge of how anything works.
Nuclear reactors, public schools, pizza places, and more. They understand none of it. So when you do know more than nothing on those subjects a lot of the movie gets really distracting because nothing about this world is normal.
The plot is just this contrived incel wetdream about nerds winning the girls and never having to recognize that maybe the reason they were outcasts was because they weren't good people.
214.*
Night of the Comet
(1984)

— Horror Comedy Directed by: Thom Eberhardt
Two sisters are forced to confront the end of the world when a strange event seemingly kills or mutates everybody in the world but them.
I had already watched this in a previous October so it didn't count as part of the challenge, but I love it nevertheless. My friend and former coworker at the movie theater had talked about showing this after close one night for the longest time and we finally got around to doing it.
I tried to sum up my thoughts on this movie, but anytime I start I just wind up nearly starting an essay, so suffice it to say that I love it. It's just such a unique and wonderful film.
Much like how Reg and Sam are dismissed and underestimated by the people they come across, I think it's easy for people to do the same to this film. I can see how people can walk away from it thinking it was nothing more than a silly little movie. But part of why I keep coming back to it is that there's actually so much going on in here when you stop and look.
You've got really great characters with a lot of depth, you've got a story of 3 survivors in a post-apocalyptic world and not a one of them is a white man, you've got accurate sibling dynamics, you've got the romantic bittersweetness of these sisters who have the world laid out in front of them but what they want most of all is just to be loved, and more!
It's just such a gem of a film and I never get sick of it.
215.
In Fabric
(2018)

— Moody Horror Directed by: Peter Strickland
A strange cursed dress brings nothing but misery to the lives it touches.
Oh, A24. I've long said of the studio that I tend to either love their films or hate them, and there's very rarely any grey area. So, I certainly appreciate that they're a studio that isn't afraid to take big swings, but it does mean I'm making a sort of all-or-nothing gamble when I try something of theirs.
It certainly does have more artistry than most of the other movies I really didn't like this month. But I also just thoroughly don't care about any part of it. It all just seemed to be arty and weird for no other reason than to be arty and weird.
I could see someone grasping onto some themes I was missing and being able to decipher it and really like it. But by the end of it for me I was just bored out of my mind and just waiting for it to be over.
216.
Tremors: Shrieker Island
(2020)

— Monster Attack Horror Sequel Directed by: Don Michael Paul
Does it really matter? You know you aren't about to watch the 7th Tremors movie if you haven't watched any of the others. And if you've seen the other 6 you know you don't really need a reason to want to be a completionist.
I thought I had seen watched all the Tremor movies earlier in the year and I was wrong! I had missed the most recent one.
And to my complete and utter shock, it is actually one of the better Tremors sequels? How did that happen?
I should point out that the original is a perfect film and not a single one of the sequels is anywhere even close to being in its league. So I'm not by any means saying this movie is great.
But damn. The sequels range from some that are enjoyable in the way that it's fun to watch silly bad movies with your friends. And others are almost completely unwatchable direct-to-dvd cash grabs.
217.
Suck
(2009)

— Rock n Roll Horror Comedy Directed by: Rob Stefaniuk
A rock band must confront some tough questions when one of their members is turned into a vampire, but greatly increases the band's popularity by doing so.
I went into this one fully ready for it to be an absolute trainwreck.
But you know what? I actually kind of enjoyed it.
It's not one I'd necessarily recommend anyone run out and go see. But if you come across it streaming somewhere and you're bored? You could do a whole lot worse.
218.
Cat People
(1982)

— a fucking disgrace Directed by: Paul Schrader
I am a HUGE fan of the 1942 film Cat People. That movie is a brilliant piece of queer horror and a personal favorite of mine.
As such I've avoided watching this one, because I had heard that it is a pretty wild departure from the original.
But since I had already watched a ton of shlock this month, I figured now was the time to watch it, because it's not like I had far to fall.
I went in with a really low-bar of expectations for this and somehow it still managed to be even worse than I expected.
One of my biggest annoyances with the original is how many people see it, not as a queer story, but as a story of sexual repression. And this director is definitely one of those people.
This movie is so straight it hurts. It is so allosexual it hurts.
The people making this were just a truly uncomfortable level of horned up when they made this movie.
I truly despise it. I hate it for existing. And I hate it for attaching itself like a dirty parasite to something I love.
What a truly terrible piece of cinema.
219.
Dave Made a Maze
(2017)

— Comedy Horror Adventure Directed by: Bill Watterson
A man's friends go on a mission to rescue him after he gets lost inside a cardboard labyrinth he made in his apartment.
[I should mention that the director of this movie is a different Bill Watterson than the one that created Calvin & Hobbes. I just need to clarify that for anyone that is like me and saw that name and got really excited.]
It's certainly a low-budget independent kind of movie, but I can't help but love the sheer creativity that went into it. It's like a really bizarre take on House of Leaves.
The production design of all the cardboard sets are my favorite part.
I don't even know what to say. In terms of acting and plot it isn't going to blow your mind. But I think the worst thing a movie can be is forgettable and this is certainly one that I won't be forgetting anytime soon.
220.
Lisa Frankenstein
(2024)

— Rom-Com Horror Directed by: Zelda Williams
A teenage outsider has a crush on her idea of a boy who died in the 19th century. But when he winds up being raised from the dead the two will have to decide just what lengths they are willing to go to for love.
I really wanted to love this one. Diablo Cody wrote the script and Kathryn Newton is always fun. And at times I do love it! Ugh. It comes so close to being something great. It's just perpetually on the line. It's just missing...I don't know...a real cohesive hook?
Sometimes it feels like things are just happening to happen. If the story and character arcs were a little more developed and drove the plot more it would have made a huge difference.
I still had a lot of fun with it and will definitely be watching it again at some point. But there's just something so annoying about a film that comes so close to greatness!
221.
The Mummy
(2017)

— Fantasy Action Monster Adventure Directed by: Alex Kurtzman
I honestly can't even remember the exact nature of this bizarre plot and I refuse to bother looking it up. It's something like, an ancient evil enchantress from Egypt is inadvertently released from her prison and wants to use Tom Cruise's body as a vessel to bring a god of death to life.
There is an action scene that they shot in a zero G plane for real. And that was admittedly pretty cool. Everything else in this movie is just absolute madness.
Yet another movie of the modern age wherein any attention to plot and characters has been sacrificed on the alter of big names, special effects, and stunts.
222.
And Now the Screaming Starts!
(1973)

— Horror Directed by: Roy Ward Baker
It's 1795 and a newly married woman is horrified to learn that her new husband's family suffers from a dark curse and now a ghost fueled by ancient resentments is determined to get its revenge at her expense.
While not one to write home about it's not terrible. Very firmly in the middle of the road. After that last movie it was refreshing to watch something from that older style where the story came first and it actually makes sense. Good or not you don't have to spend the movie going, "What the fuck is even happening!?" And that's something I appreciate about it.
223.
Haunted Mansion
(2023)

— Spooky Family Comedy Directed by: Justin Simien
A group of people have been cursed after stepping foot in a haunted mansion. Now in order to be freed from the ghosts that live there they will have to figure out a way to defeat the evil specter at the center of it all.
TRASH. FILM.
So fucking dull. And there's a truly weird amount of product placement.
Just like The Mummy (2017) this is yet another modern movie that only cares about famous actors and special effects. The plot or any sort of character development felt like a complete after thought.
Truly a terrible watch. I was so utterly and completely bored. It's not even fun bad, it's just dulldulldull bad.
224.
Island of Lost Souls
(1932)

— Sci-Fi Horror Directed by: Erle C. Kenton
A shipwrecked man winds up stuck on the island of a mad scientist who is determined to learn where the line between man and beast truly resides.
I've seen a lot of versions of H.G. Wells' novel, but strangely never this one.
You know what? Solid. I think it holds up.
Is it my favorite bit of 30s horror? Not even close. But it's solid. It's got interesting characters, some great tension, a memorable premise, makes the viewer ponder some intriguing moral questions, has decent production, and comes in at a tight 70 minutes.
Watching it after the shitshow that was Haunted Mansion (2023) was like a breath of fresh air.
225.
The Swarm
(1978)

— Animal Attack Horror Directed by: Irwin Allen
A swarm of killer bees threatens to destroy the United States of America and only bee expert Michael Caine can stop them.
Definitely a movie to watch with a friend. I am convinced a great drinking game could be made out of this movie, because it's definitely not good.
Take a drink every time there's a snapple fact disguised as dialogue.
Take a drink every time someone sees a bee hallucination.
Take a drink every time you'd wish they'd get back to the bees.
Finish your drink every time Michael Caine eats sunflower seeds as if he was feeding a cat a pill and he's the cat.
I definitely rated it quite low though. It's like 2 hours long and has some truly bizarre pacing. There's just so much filler and so many scenes that feel like a public service announcement to teach people about the dangers of killer bees.
226.
The Hunt
(2020)

— Action Horror Directed by: Craig Zobel
A group of people wake up in the middle of nowhere and learn that they are being hunted for sport by a group of unhinged one percenters.
What a truly odd movie.
I'm really not sure who this movie was aimed it. It has that South Park energy of "Caring about things is stupid so we'll just sit back and make fun of everyone for caring."
HOWEVER, I'm a sucker for a survivor turning the tables on those who would do them ill through sheer brains and willpower. And Betty Gilpin is amazing in this movie.
She single-handedly straps this movie to her back and drags it up the mountain. So I had a good time watching it, but only because of her. Any scene that she's not in was wasted time.
227.
The Night Has Eyes
(1942)

— Mystery Thriller Directed by: Leslie Arliss
A woman searching for her lost friend on the moors takes shelter with a strange man who lives out there. She starts to fall in love with him but fears that he is hiding a dark secret.
I had a real problem this October with movies I had to reject from counting towards the challenge because I found them to not meet my qualifications for being a Spooky movie.
Personally I consider this to be a Mystery Thriller and not a proper Spooky movie, but that's just me.
I dunno. I've definitely seen movies of this type before and it probably suffers in my mind from the comparison.
I'll still put any solid older movie up against your average modern blockbuster any day though.
228.
The New Mutants
(2020)

— Superhero Coming-of-Age Horror Directed by: Josh Boone
A group of mutant teens are held at a psych ward to help them control their abilities. But something dark has begun to haunt the halls here and threatens to kill them all one by one.
This movie has suffered so much. It went through a true production hell and it shows.
The whole situation sucks so much because I've read the New Mutants' comic arc that this is based on so I was really excited when I heard this was being made. I've been waiting forever for someone to make a true Horror movie out of a superhero story!
The movie is really awkward. You can see the Frankenstein patchworking of its production all over it. Everything is awkwardly stitched together into an unnatural creation.
And if that wasn't bad enough almost all the actors are doing bad accents for absolutely NO reason
And yet I can't completely write it off because I can see beyond the surface to see how this could have worked. There are moments where you can see what this movie originally wanted to be and in those moments it's actually really interesting!
I would definitely file this under movies that I like more than they deserve and so I wouldn't recommend anyone else watch it, but I'm definitely going to be rewatching it at some point because it intrigues me.
229.
Thirst
(1979)

— Horror Thriller Directed by: Rod Hardy
A woman is kidnapped by a vampiric secret society who are determined to force her to join their ranks by one way or another.
Yo, the 70s were a weird ass time.
I can't say I particularly liked this movie, but I also can't say I don't respect it.
This thing is out here absolutely swinging for the fences. It is extremely artistic, weird, and memorable.
I can't say I'm dying to see it again anytime soon, but definitely glad I watched it.
230.
Renfield
(2023)

— Action Horror Comedy Directed by: Chris McKay
Dracula's manservant Renfield begins to question if there isn't more to life than luring unsuspecting victims to be eaten by his master.
You know what? Respect where respect is due: I liked this far more than I thought I would. It's a pretty solid character-centric action comedy.
I definitely wished they hadn't gone to the Mortal Kombat school of blood effects though, because it is weirdly distracting how much blood they think the human body can hold.
I don't really have any solid opinions about this. It's fine. I would definitely watch it again, but I wouldn't ever pay to watch it again. So take from that what you will.

How about instead of erasing and dismissing my reblog, you respond to it on why it's incorrect?
The starting statistic comes from a meta analysis of 27 smaller studies, most of which don't break 100 subjects, and only one breaks 1,000. Most of the studies have significant risk of bias, and include adults in the statistics. The authors directly financially benefit from their conclusion, being surgeons who openly advertise they provide the treatments they claim have astonishingly low decisional regret rates.
One of their own colleagues reviewed this study and criticized these very points, so I'm not pulling this out of nowhere.
In addition to these red flags, the statistics being used as comparison A: tend to also have small sample sizes (and/or low response rates to the corresponding surveys) and B: group in complications following surgery as "regret."
Tattoo regret: 235 respondents
Knee replacement: systemic review, narrowing 1,219 studies down to 209 within acceptable parameters, and more than 80% of them had greater than 80% satisfaction. "Up to" my ass.
"All" surgeries: 79 studies included in the systematic review, and more than 50% of the procedures were cancer. Considering the regularity with which surgery to remove cancer fails, 14% regret rate seems low.
I'm not bothering with the other ones because they are not surgical procedures. This is already the third time I've had to do research relating to this post, and y'all don't pay me enough to provide these citations.

No, no writing poetry at all in fact

Man. I’m so high right now. I’m depressed too, incredibly. Another big work push right now, and I’m not coming out of it alive. I’m not writing really well right now. Bouncing my CRWR 200 draft from paper to doc last night only revealed how terrible it was. CRWR 209 revision seems like a worsening of the original, too. I need to complete the fucking reflection, too. I could never give it to Meta Knight, either, for peer review. Also I took the wrong bus and I’m only losing 7 minutes tops, but I feel like I’m wasting so much time fuck.
I revealed a lot of the past to CRWR girl. I don’t know why I did that. I met my ex from the 10th grade today and realized how badly I needed the past.
—————————————
I didn't finish this from last night. I don't know why. I didn't even remember the wrong bus part until last night.
Having a lot of work is depressing. I should get started on some of that now but I'd rather just lie down in the dirt and die slowly. Theoretically, it should just be turning in shit at this point. A lot of the shit I have is "done", at least in a nominal way. I really don't care any more either.
I need to have my portfolio done, and it just isn't done. My 200 TA gave me 100% on some poetry I did, but that just isn't right. It was lazy poetry. It's meaningless poetry. Part of me still manages to feel euphoric over that grade, which is just plain stupid to be honest. It really is nothing. That poetry is nothing. I need to write good now.
I talked a bit to that girl from CRWR on Thurs. "Talked" and "a bit" are really overstatements. I complimented her jacket. I don't even know why I try any longer. All of this love shit feels trite.
