"marn i missed sgdq 2024 what should i watch"
hi i decided i'm doing another one of these. it's been a minute. this past week was summer games done quick, an annual speedrunning marathon raising money for doctors without borders and also a great way to get into watching speedrunning. a lot of their content is tailored towards being both clearly explained and fun to watch for an audience outside the speedrun community, so you can jump in with basically no knowledge besides “this person is gonna play a game really fast”.
gdq has the full week's worth of vods up as a playlist on their channel, but here are some runs that i personally think you should check out:
ken griffy jr presents mlb by peanut butter the dog: look it's a dog playing baseball. i don't know what else to tell you.
the entire silly block: speedrunners get up way too early in the morning/late at night to play games that feel like a fever dream. some of the commentators are going on 24 hours of no sleep. it's brilliant. my personal highlights of what i've seen so far are stuart little 2, mad panic coaster, city bus simulator race, and the golf it wrong hole only race that the players dressed up as golfers for
alan wake 2 alan%: alan wake clips through walls and generally has a bad time while a bunch of gamers call him a sopping wet catboy. the runner for this one is really charismatic and it's very funny to see staff rushing to open up the pit as soon as we sing starts (yes they do the dance of course they do the dance). i just love joyful runs of horror games man
super mario 64 blindfolded randomizer: what if you played mario 64 blindfolded and also the stars were in completely random locations. and also you had to do it very very fast.
kingdom hearts 2 critical any%: every kh2 speedrun i've ever seen is a work of art and this one is no different. some of the boss fights go down so fast you will literally miss them if you look away for a minute. and also two of my favorite runners are on couch commentary!
balatro showcase: genuinely made me rethink how i'm playing some of the balatro decks. also great commentary and just fun all around despite (or perhaps partially because of) the absolute struggle session going on with plasma deck in the beginning
super mario world kaizo relay: kaizo is a shorthand term for a game hacked to its absolute limits of difficulty that often requires strict precision of movement and can punish the player for thinking they're smarter than it. in this segment, two teams of 4 very very good mario runners race to complete 8 kaizo levels they've never seen before in their lives
mario maker 2 troll level race: i always like the mario maker races for the same reason i like the kaizo relays. i love watching two speedrunners thrown blindly into the shit have to make up strategies on the fly via trial and error (and error, and error, and error, and...)
kirby air ride race: two high level kirby air ride speedrunners race for an actual physical title belt. the trash talk game happening here is of the insane variety that only two very skilled people who truly respect each others' talents at their game of choice can provide
kaizo mario galaxy: what if mario galaxy hated you even more than usual and would stop at nothing to kill you. also most of the commentators are only familiar with the vanilla game and their reactions to the added-in bullshit are hysterical
tony hawk pro skater 1, 2, 3, and 4: i fell asleep watching this and woke up in a cold sweat to the sound of a bunch of people singing superman by goldfinger. good run
super mario rpg remake: this was the finale block and it's just great to see a bunch of people who really really love the original mario rpg get to hang out and talk about how good it is and also watch a world record level player absolutely stunt on the game
halo 3 four-player co-op legendary: dudes rock

Peter Edward Rose Sr.
April 14, 1941 – September 30, 2024,
Also known by his nickname "Charlie Hustle", Rose was an American former professional baseball player and manager. Rose played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1963 to 1986, most prominently as a member of the Cincinnati Reds lineup known as the Big Red Machine for their dominance of the National League in the 1970s. During and after his playing career, he served as the manager of the Reds from 1984 to 1989.
Rose was a switch hitter and is the all-time MLB leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), singles (3,215) and outs (10,328). He won three World Series, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves and the Rookie of the Year Award. He also made seventeen All-Star appearances at an unequaled five positions (second baseman, left fielder, right fielder, third baseman and first baseman). Rose won both of his Gold Gloves when he was an outfielder, in 1969 and 1970.
Rest in Peace, Charlie Hustle!! Thank you for the memories and here's hoping that maybe now, you'll be recognized for the player that you were and not given the short shrift because of a mistake in the Cooperstown elections this year!!

March 2024 Stucky Fics
Completed
Now! That’s What I Call 90’s Slow Jams (Rated: M, Words: 10K) by deadonarrival
Summary: Steve goes home for the wedding of Becca Barnes and while he’s there he runs into his old crush. Her brother. Except now they are both hot as shit. Oh no whatever will happen.
(You Can't Choose) What Stays and What Fades Away (Rated: G, words: 3K) by Taste_is_Sweet
Summary: At some point in everyone's life, the first words their soulmate will ever say to them will appear in deep black writing on their skin. The words fade to light grey when a soulmate dies. Sometimes new words replace them, whether they're wanted or not (These were the words Steve was born with, running in a messy, uneven line across his skinny little chest, beneath both his collarbones: You okay, pal? Those jerks didn't hurt ya too bad, did they? Steve woke up from the ice in 2011 with the words, Who the hell is Bucky? circling his heart, in printing so precise it barely looked human. Steve hated them.)
For Words to Say it Right (Rated: T, Words: 25K) by Squeaky & Taste_is_Sweet
Summary: Turns out when you're missing an arm, everyone asks are you okay? all the damn time. And when your soulmark is one of the most common questions in English, it's even worse. Generic soulmarks are a bitch.
Lost Vocabularies that Might Express (The Memory of These Broken Impressions) (Rated: M, Words: 111K) by dorian_burberrycanary / @burberrycanary
Summary: The worst of times, like the best, are always passing away. How’s that for some consolation on the road? A post-The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Stucky fix-it as part of the all-American road trip, detours included.
The Simple Life (Rated: E, Words: 114K) by howler32557038
Summary: "The simple life." "You'll get there one day." "I don't know. Family, stability...The guy who wanted all that went in the ice seventy-five years ago. I think someone else came out." Bucky wants to be part of Steve's life. He wants to be an Avenger. He wants to be a good partner. Unfortunately, sometimes that means not telling Steve everything.
WIP
a league of our own (Rated: E, Current Words: 40K) by burning_brighter / @burnin-brighter
Summary: Steve's sixteen-year-old son's one and only dream is to play in the Major League. He thinks he has a shot when the team get a new coach, retired MLB legend and Steve's high school crush, Bucky Barnes. Steve hasn't thought of the man in many years, but seeing him brings back many memories that push Steve to reach out to an old friend and maybe make new ones on the way. What happens when Steve gets to know Bucky properly? What happens when they open up about their darkest secrets and deepest fears? There's really only one thing that can happen.
hey now, you're an all star (get your game on, go play) (Rated: E, Current Words: 81K) by buckyismybicycle / @buckyismybicycle
Summary: Boston Bruins trade notorious party animal/human disaster Bucky Barnes to the Dallas Stars, and captain Steve Rogers is not impressed when Fury puts him on babysitting duties. But, as he gets to know Bucky - really gets to know Bucky - he wonders if maybe the media has got it all wrong - very, very wrong. PS - you do not need to know hockey for this, I promise.
Every Me and Every You (Rated: E, Current Words: 60K) by deadto27 / @deadto27
Summary: Bucky Barnes is doing his best. He's getting by after the blip, after Sam became Captain America, after Steve...well, it's best he doesn't think about that. The point is, his life is different now, and he's trying his best. He just wishes the hollow feeling in his chest would go away. ----- Bucky gets blinded by a bright light as the tear seems to implode in on itself and there’s an odd little jolt as the pulling stops, and then Bucky’s blinking, trying to get his vision right again as he loosens his grip on America. “You okay?” he checks, still squinting. He’s probably not blind, he thinks. It just feels like it right now. “I’m okay,” America tells him and he sees her nod shakily as his vision starts to clear, and he carefully lets go of her, seeing that she can support herself, hands pressing onto the floor next to her. “Uh…I don’t think I am,” says another voice, and Bucky turns his head so fast he might give himself whiplash. Because he knows that voice. He knows that voice better than any other voice on the planet and he’s missed that voice

The American League defeated the National League in the 2024 MLB All Star game. Red Sox CF Jarren Duran hit a two-run homer that broke a fifth-inning tie and lifted the American League to the 5-3 win.
Dodgers Shohei Ohtani opened the scoring with a 3-run homer in the third inning which gave the National League their only runs in the game. Duran was named MVP of the game and the American League can boast to having won 10 of the last 11 All-Star Games.

2024 MLB Season Charts (All Star Break)
Ever want a nice visualization of every team's current position in the standings? Ever wonder about how many notable streaks every team has so far this season? Ever think to yourself, "just how bad could the 2024 White Sox really be?"
Then these charts are for you!
In my spare time (man have I had so much spare time), I've been working on compiling every MLB team's wins and losses into individual charts, because sometimes just numbers isn't enough to really grasp how a season is going. And, as special treat inspired by the Twins' 12 game winning streak, I also highlighted every notable streak. A notable streak here is defined as a streak of 4 or more games, winning or losing. Streaks of 3 games or less will not be highlighted. Each team's longest streak will also be noted.
(Note that I'm only one guy, so there may be some mistakes. If the mistakes are large enough, I'll try to fix them.)
These charts will only be including the start of the regular season up to the All Star Break. I hope to keep them all updated as the season goes on and chart the entire season for every team, but we'll see how life goes.
For now, here are the current charts. Since there are 30 MLB teams, I've split the charts into several posts based on each division and went into detail about some trends I noticed with each team season so far.
AL Central
AL East
AL West
NL East
NL Central
NL West
And for those who want an MLB-wide summary, look no further than below the cut!
First, current best and worst teams:
This probably doesn't come as much of a surprise. The Phillies currently have the best record, being 28 games above .500. Meanwhile, the White Sox have the worst record and are 44 games below .500. Ouch.
Team with the most notable streaks:
The White Sox win this category with a whole 11 notable streaks, including the one they're on now. However, with only one of those a winning streak, they prove that the title of most streaks doesn't necessarily mean best record.
Runner-ups include the Yankees (9), Marlins (8), and the Rockies (8).
Team with the least notable streaks:
The Reds only have 3 notable streaks with just one being a losing streak. Though with that streak being an 8 game losing streak, it certainly can't be ignored.
Runner-ups: Guardians (4), Rays (4), Blue Jays (4), Cardinals (4), and Pirates (4).
Team with the most notable winning streaks:
The Yankees get this title, as 7 of their 9 notable streaks are winning ones. In fact, before the end of June, all they had were notable winning streaks. It's only in the past few weeks that they got their first notable losing streaks.
Runner-ups: Royals (5), Orioles (5), Red Sox (5), Mariners (5), Phillies (5), Braves (5), Brewers (5), Dodgers (5).
Team with most notable losing streaks:
The White Sox have a whopping 10 notable losing streaks. Of course, you've seen this chart already, so not much else to add here.
Runner-ups: Marlins (7) and Rockies (7).
Team with longest winning streak:
Now for the streak that helped inspire this whole thing. The Twins of course have the longest winning streak so far this season with 12 straight wins. Good times, good times.
Runner-ups: Guardians (9), Royals (8), and Yankees (8).
Team with longest losing streak:
Yup, you knew it, so here we are again. The White Sox had a whole 14 game losing streak this season, and it sticks out like a giant red sore thumb on their chart.
Runner-ups: Athletics (9), Marlins (9), and Reds (8).
Teams with no notable losing streaks:
We actually have three teams who currently do not have a notable losing streak. Extra points go to the Phillies and Brewers who have five notable winning streaks to the Guardians' four.
A team's chart I just had to point out:
The Mariners get an extra special shout out for having 7 notable streaks and all of them being just four games long, the minimum to be counted as a notable streak. Funny stuff.
And some last stats:
Every team has at least one notable winning streak, even the White Sox! Yay for all of us!
The average amount of notable streaks per team is 6.13 streaks.
The average amount of notable winning streaks per team is 3.2 streaks.
The average length of the longest streak per team is 6.9 games.
Join me at the end of the season when I (maybe) do the full 2024 season!

He was an All-Star for three seasons and 20-game winner for four seasons. He was the American League (AL) ERA leader in 1968 and 1972.
