Buick Envista et le surprenant Salon de l’auto de New York

Les lecteurs les plus aguerris reconnaîtront peut-être le Chevrolet Trax vedette de ce blogue de la semaine dernière dans la Buick Envista que je présente ici mais, je vous le dis tout de suite, il y a une différence!

Décidemment très jolie, la Buick Envista (Photo Éric Descarries)

En effet, et toute une différence il y a ! Tout d’abord, on le voit très bien, le style de la Buick est nettement différent. Il fait plus « sedan aux allures sport » que multisegment. Le design de l’avant est de très bon goût mettant en relief le nouvel ornement de Buick alors que le toit est plus fuyant. L’arrière est aussi bien rendu! Et pour une « sous-compacte », l’auto semble plus imposante. D’ailleurs les multiples personnes qui m’en ont fait la remarque ont été étonnés de la beauté du véhicule! C’est vrai qu’il est beau et je suis persuadé que la marque ne pourra qu’en bénéficier au point de vue des ventes.

Il en va de même pour l’intérieur qui est plus grand que l’on pourrait le croire! Quatre adultes peuvent y prendre place facilement, cinq à la rigueur. Dès le départ, on note que le tableau de bord de la Buick est totalement différent de celui du Trax. Buick nous fait remarquer que l’instrumentation est comprise dans le grand écran qui inclut l’écran de la radio et de la caméra de recul. Seule ombre au tableau, si le soleil réfléchit dans cet écran, l’instrumentation est plus difficile à lire.

Tout comme pour le Trax, les sièges sont relativement confortables mais l’espace permet surtout beaucoup de débattement pour la tête et les jambes. Il en va de même pour les places arrière, même si le toit est fuyant. Évidemment, cette caractéristique diminue un peu l’espace de chargement au coffre mais pas tant que cela. Toutefois, j’avoue que la visibilité arrière en est un peu plus difficile pour le conducteur. Et encore une fois, tout comme c’en est le cas pour le Trax, on constate que la sellerie fait plutôt « plastique » mais elle m’a paru de plus grande qualité que dans le Trax. Décidemment, cet intérieur fait plus Buick, donc plus luxueux!

Je ne m’attarderai pas sur la configuration mécanique de l’Envista qui est presque identique à celle du Trax. Sauf qu’il faut rappeler qu’il s’agit ici d’une traction avant seulement mue par un moteur à trois cylindres de 1,2 litre turbocompressé qui développe 137 chevaux, le tout combiné à une boîte automatique à six rapports. Rien de bien excitant au point de vue performances (0 à 100 en quelque 10 ou 11 secondes) mais suffisant pour la moyenne des utilisateurs. Évidemment, la consommation n’est pas des plus remarquables (9,3 l/100 km alors que le compteur de l’auto indiquait 8,8 mais tous les déplacements étaient en conditions urbaines) et je me demande si ce n’est pas à cause des pneumatiques, de très larges 245-45 R19 (ils aident à une tenue de route appréciable mais est-ce vraiment nécessaire?) qui, dans le cas de mon véhicule d’essai, étaient des Continental d’hiver.

Pour le reste, la seule autre remarque qui me vient à l’esprit est que cette Buick m’a semblé plus silencieuse que le Trax (même si, à l’accélération poussée, le trois cylindres peut s’avérer bruyant!). C’est surtout en vitesse de croisière qu’il est le plus silencieux. Et la suspension m’a parue moins ferme que celle du Trax. Plus « Buick », disons?

Ironiquement, la Buick Envista Sport dont il est question ici n’est pas plus chère que le Chevrolet Trax de la semaine dernière. En effet, de base, GM en annonce un prix de 28 099 $. Dans le cas du véhicule dont il est question ici, il faut lui ajouter le groupe Expérience Buick incluant le toit ouvrant, le tout pour 1195 $, l’ensemble dit Commodité de 700 $, la peinture optionnelle de 495 $ le chauffe-bloc de 195 $, la taxe d’accise du fédéral de 100 $ et le transport et la préparation de 2000 $ pour un total de 32 784 $ (plus taxes). Presque le même prix que le Trax. On comprend pourquoi tant d’acheteur préfèreront l’Envista à son jumeau le Trax!

Je ne connais pas les intentions de GM (Buick) pour l’avenir de cette berline mais sachez que cette auto « made in Korea » connaît un grand succès en Chine où le constructeur prévoit éventuellement une boîte automatique à neuf rapports, un moteur optionnel à quatre cylindres de 1,5 ou 2,0 litres et la technologie hybride légère de 48 volts en équipement standard. Me semble que ce serait bien reçu en Amérique, non ?

Le Salon de l’auto de New York a longtemps été un des plus importants salons de l’auto au monde. Dans le passé, il terminait la saison des grands salons de l’auto et les constructeurs en profitaient pour y dévoiler de grandes nouveautés, surtout les Américains et les Européens. Mais aujourd’hui, les gens semblent moins intéressés à ces événements et les grands constructeurs semblent vouloir les bouder…sauf les Sud-Coréens. Et ce sont ces derniers qui auront sauvé le Salon de New York qui vient d’ouvrir ses portes dans la métropole américaine…Une chance!
