December 2024 Check In
Tumblr media
Hello, all!
Happy winter! We’ve been busy at work, and excited to share with everyone some of our progress!
First, let’s look at some art!
Fauna Progress
At the end of last month, we shared to our Patreon an early access look at our next Fauna.
Last week, we invited Patrons to come up with names for this creature and then vote for their favourite one. The chosen name was…
Kerasoar!
Tumblr media
Sketch by Hydde
We have gotten inquiries on if the content on this page is entirely exclusive, and the answer is: not always, sometimes it is early access. We will share parts of the Patreon updates at later dates! And the previews we do not share publicly, will still be revealed as the finished pieces.
Accessory Illustrations
Let’s look at some recolors next!
Iridescent Hanfu Recolors
Tumblr media
Illustrated by Hydde and recolored by Emma
Creeping Thicket Recolors
Tumblr media
Illustrated by Remmie and recolored by Emma
Protogear
We’ve been illustrating the Protogear! The design underwent simplification and minor shape alteration to better fit multiple cat heads. But, we believe the item to be just as cute!
Tumblr media
Illustrations by Rue The Protogear is next in our recolor pipeline!
New Decor
As we mentioned previously, Decor was not working out initially! We’ve since transitioned to doing Decor in the same style as cats, intending to replicate the style of animated stills.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Birds illustrated by Jersopod and Remmie, other items by by Giulia and Remmie
This was an excellent decision. Our team is not only more equipped to handle stylistic consistency, but is much faster at production too.
Development Check In
Aesthetic changes
We’ve been busy hunting down and squishing visual errors and inconsistencies, such as wrongly formatted buttons. Additionally, we managed to do several general reformatting to prevent pages and modules from breaking.
Tumblr media
Mobile optimization
And we made a huge push for mobile optimization as well, below is the user settings page as currently appears on mobile devices.
Tumblr media
Forum Crests
We also got the forum crests formatting nicely! In addition, we are playing with the idea of providing a function for users to select the background color of their avatar. We can’t wait to see everyone’s avatars and crest choices!
Tumblr media
Premium shop
In addition, we not only have functioning reward codes, but we’ve also added the ability for users to pay for virtual content. Introducing the premium shop! We’ve added a wide range of silver amounts, and you can also custom-select the amount of silver you wish to purchase. Our regular silver amounts also offer bonus silver, depending on the quantity, and the same applies to custom amounts bought. Additionally, we're introducing bundles, which offer silver, copper, and various items at a discounted price! Bundles displayed are currently placeholder previews for testing purposes.
Tumblr media
Our next focus is polishing the pelt system, that being said: we are on the right track for closed beta. Thank you so much for all the patience while we do the fixing up for beta. We really want users to have a smooth experience when we pass out all 1500+ beta keys, so we're doing a lot to make sure it's a properly prepared application! We're currently looking at the date being announced somewhere in a month's time, but we'll keep up to date progress on what we're working on in the meantime.
To summarize: We shared accessory recolor and general progress, decors, and a work in progress fauna. In addition, we also shared our current progress in the development, our focus lately laid on visual inconsistencies, getting the reward codes and forum crests working, and creating the premium shop.
What to expect next update: Further asset and development updates, beta progress and expectations.

Creating fantasy religions: something I'm doing now so thought I would post about my process.
The mistake a lot of writers make is developing a religion from a singular event, and piling a ton of stuff on top of it that makes logical sense. Whereas, in reality, religions are self propelling systems that travel under their own steam and if there is an event that catalyses them, it is never in a socio-cultural or political and economic vacuum.
You also end up with an apparently totally random set of things attached to one figure which does make sense if you know the origins, but otherwise is just accepted even if the meaning is lost.
It is the difference between "the god of Midwinter and festivals around this originated because a cult of necromancers were banished into the frozen wastes and this <event> became the Origin Story for how we got to a midwinter festival with creepy bone puppets in my fantasy world" and a religion that feels ... Real.
Ok so firstly, this is a bit too neat. (This was my original reasoning for a midwinter god called Yarash and I changed it because it wasn't very realistic or interesting for my world.)
Why, let's say, is the god whose feast is at midwinter also the patron of puppet makers and osteopaths?
Well, we could say that this makes a lot of sense because the god's festival was originally to do with remembering the dead, and puppets were used in the festival to represent the dead, as necromancy should have been part of it but people didn't actually know how to raise the dead properly. Then as magic evolved people could actually raise the dead for short periods to deliver messages in these festivals, but this drew internal debate from the conservative priests who thought puppets were the original form and so should be maintained, and necromancy was an aberration, vs the progressives who saw necromancy as the original INTENTION and so the natural and correct progression from the puppets. The debate might rage on for years creating splinters, sects, differing traditions that sit uneasily together but find middle ground in other less controversial topics and practices, and even cults.
At some point, the secular authorities get involved for their own reasons. Maybe some rulers are pro-"The Old Bones" or anti-, or they want to outlaw necromancy or benefit from it for various political reasons, socio-cultural reasons, economic reasons, military intelligence reasons, etc. Whatever happens, happens. Times change. Official attitudes swing back and forth, while internally the religious debates continue, now informed by and perhaps as counters to, this secular intervention.
Then we end up in modern times, the times of the story. Nobody really believes in gods anymore. They do remember the old gods of the seasons and at the secular festival in winter, there are a lot of traditional puppet shows that have a whole history and life of their own. The puppets are called "the old bones" and nobody really remembers why. Osteopaths have the puppets and symbols relating to the midwinter festival on their certificates and college heraldry and nobody really remembers why, but the information is there to look up and is a fun thing to know for trivia nights.
And necromancy... is a controversial branch of science, divorced from its original religious significance for many but not for all, and more integrated as an art or practice in the public consciousness (positively or negatively depending on perspective and propaganda and actual usage).
And now, you have a ton of depth and meat to it without having to flesh out the arguments and debates themselves unless that is plot relevant.
There is a lot you can do with this society now, and by tweaking one thing you can create completely different societies and ideologies. The depth is now there to set your story at any point during this history and to develop numerous ideas. So much stuff can happen.
With the singular event version, and a static fact of a necromancy cult in the frozen wastes, things are much more limited and linear, with less depth to play with.
Also remember that your characters will not be expected to know everything about your world unless they are experts in religion and/or history, and also the 2 subjects are not mutually inclusive so a historian is not an expert theologian and vice versa. How much the average person on the street knows depends on levels of formal education, accessible knowledge beyond formal education, which may include religious instruction and folklore, and propaganda. But it means you can build in some subtle things - like the puppet symbols on the door of an osteopath or bone doctor - that never need to be explained, but have a logical in-world explanation below the surface.
Try taking a static idea and work it into a system and see where it leads!
EDIT: I'm doing a workshop on Build A Hellscape at the Devils and Justified Sinners online conference, Saturday 24th Aug 2024, 9AM UK Time. Sign up below:

New year, new Eli! Once again I chose my favorite three thank-you images from last year and let my Taggerung patrons choose which of them should be colored, and the winning sketch suggested by Andy S. - Eli on a surfboard! I think this one lent itself very well to color.
Funny enough last year's colored thank you image was fall themed and this one is rather summer themed - perhaps the 2024 winner will be a spring or winter themed Eli?
Thank you for your suggestions this past year - here's to aAetnother year of art!

Regarding Killer Trait Updates
Hello, everyone!
It's been a good minute since my last Killer Trait update, hasn't it?
A lot of people have been asking me about Killer Trait updates and when the full-game will be released so, after a lot of thought, I decided to make this post.
Here's the thing: my Patreon hasn't been doing well. It hasn't been doing well for several months now. While the decline started after Where Winter Crows Go's release in November of last year, it's gotten progressively worse from February 2024 onwards. And because of this I'm going to have to pause my billing for my current patrons from August onwards—at least until I have something new to post.
It'd be a lie if I said this didn't affect me, I'm only human after all, but I'm also well aware that Patreon is a tough thing to maintain in a way that's consistent and interesting.
Unfortunately, since I live in Argentina, my only real way to get funds for my games is through Patreon, donations on Ko-Fi and sales and donations on Itchio. While it definitely helps that I hire some people from Argentina for certain art related things (so I pay them in Argentine Pesos), most of the people I commission are from overseas, so it's always a must to be able to pay them in USD.
And that's the issue: since I don't have that much money anymore and I can't commission people as often... this inevitably delays my progress on both Killer Trait and Potion Pleasing (DEMO out now!) indefinitely. It's sucks for me too, but it's the reality: making games costs money.
As I mentioned in a previous post, Killer Trait will have re-designs for most of the characters (not counting Carl because his design was originally my own) since the ones in the DEMO were stock sprites I bought from an artist, not my own designs. And I want these characters to be 100% my own, which is why I decided to have them re-designed. I've talked about this in the past in more detail when I decided to have Crowe re-designed, you can find that post HERE.
Of course, for these new character sheets (with the exception of Oz's, which has already been finished) and the new sprites, I need game funds in order to commission the artist. Even after the sprites are done, there are a couple of backgrounds—the characters' rooms—that I'd like to have originally made (especially since the ones I bought from Minikle are very limiting and don't really fit with the characters' personalities). And this doesn't even account for CGs, which I'll probably have to postpone for a while because the sprites and the backgrounds are way more important.
Some might be thinking "What about Where Winter Crows Go?". While I was lucky that WWCG's first demo was so well received, I still spent a whole lot of money from my own pocket to make it. I bought a lot of assets and, when I got a few donations, I commissioned a few artists to help me. WWCG was NEVER a game made with only free resources.
Making the art book for WWCG was a way I found to get a little of that investment back, but I'm well aware that I'll never get all the money that I spent back. And that's okay! To this day, I don't regret having invested my money to make WWCG because it gave me a lot of experience, perspective and made me learn a lot.
Be that as it may, however, I can't realistically make the rest of my games free. As I mentioned before, game development is expensive in both money AND time. Without funds, it's a given that things are going to be delayed.
So... where does that leave things?
Well, after pondering on it for a while, I came to the conclusion that I'm not really ready for a crowdfunding campaign right now. Those are extremely hard and ALSO cost money to advertise well and make sure everything's in order. So... the temporary solution I arrived at is setting goals on Ko-Fi!
How would this work? Basically, I would set a monetary goal of the amount of money needed for a certain asset in a certain game that needs to be made. For example: sprites & character sheets in Killer Trait. Once that goal is met, I'll commission the person in question so they can start working on it! After that, I'll set the next goal and so on 💪
I'm thinking of setting the first Ko-Fi goal once August starts. And from there... I'll see how it goes! If things don't go well, I'm also considering making Where Winter Crows Go paid for a while—don't worry, I would make an announcement first—because I honestly have no more ways of getting game funds for Killer Trait and Potion Pleasing and, as mentioned before, making games is really expensive (and I'm only one person).
Thank you so much for reading until the end and I hope you have an amazing day!

Main Masterlist
Happy endings (or the option for one, in the case of CYOE fics) are the norm here.
Most fics are one-shots. Two-shots or miniseries have their prequel/sequel/chapters posted beside the name. Series are free from summary but have a status (completed/in progress/hiatus) posted beside their name.
Most Akuma Class fics are salty. I write Adrien and/or Chloe salt/sugar 50/50

He would be retiring now as well. ... The next day, a lone figure made its way back to Ladybug’s flower-covered grave. He was the class’s foreign-exchange student, Damian Grayson. FMP: Fairground Artwork & Signwriting. LO1
Easter Week 2
Carters Steam Fair:
Carters Steam Fair is a traditional English travelling funfair with rides dating from the 1890s to the 1960’s. Carters also restore vintage fairground rides and attractions, taking them on tour for all to enjoy. Carters stand out from all other fairs, with their dedication to traditional signwriting and decoration. The collection of rides and side stalls makes Carters the largest travelling vintage funfair in the world, ensuring the preservation of British heritage. Carters also offer creative workshops across their website, something I would definitely do for this project if I had the money!
Tumblr media
From their website it is clear that they've taken on Victorian design inspiration across their work, which is something I can see myself doing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heritage Crafts:
According to Heritage Crafts, a preservation company patroned by King Charles, fairground artwork currently sits as an 'endangered' practice. It says there are only 8 commercial fairground artists, and no formal training courses, only Carter's course. Amy Goodwin is listed as one of the artists, so it really is that small of a community.
The page provides some interesting history:
Early fairground art styles featured intricate wood carvings, painted banners and exotic jungle and animal scenery.
Gilding is an important feature of fairground artwork, with genuine gold leaf being used in early styles.
The 1930s saw faster, lighter rides appear in fairgrounds, which often featured more uniform Art Deco “jazz” patterns.
After the Second World War booming economic conditions led to showmen increasing the size and grandeur of their equipment, with space travel being a particular favourite.
The 1970s and 80s saw changing tastes with many new rides featuring spectacular airbrushed paintings, often depicting film and music stars, fast cars or sporting heroes.
Today many artists focus on recreating older artwork styles whilst others continue to push boundaries creating new themes.
The page mentions Fred Fowle, who has popped up a lot in my research. Alongside his apprentice Peter Tei, they would become the best known names in the industry.
Carpenter, D. (2023). Fairground Art. [online]. Available from: https://heritagecrafts.org.uk/fairground-art/ [Accessed 27th March 2024]
Fred Fowle:
Fowle was the country’s foremost fairground artist. Once you become familiar with it, his exuberant, three-dimensional style is instantly recognisable.
lettering and images influenced by popular culture – particularly the cinema posters, adverts and American comic books which he loved.
Hall & Fowle’s designs were highly sought after, with the showmen who commissioned them often proving to be extremely demanding clients. The seasonal nature of the industry meant that the bulk of the work had to be carried out in the winter months. It was during this time that he established and refined his signature style, which featured expressive swirls and curvaceous, freehand letterforms.
In the late 1960s, psychedelia entered mainstream pop culture, and this coincided with fairground rides becoming faster and more exciting. Fowle’s work directly reflected both of these developments.
Fowle remained resolutely self-effacing and modest, insisting that, ‘I think the main thing is to please your customer.’
Fairground art often suffers from its ephemeral nature. Unless the ride itself is retired, it tends to get repeatedly painted over with new designs over the years. Many of Fowle’s remaining pieces have been sold to collectors, although there are some well preserved examples on display at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre in Devon.

Reflection, LO4:
From this research it is clear that fairground art consists of a tight-knit community, in order to preserve the craft. In an aesthetic consideration, I lean towards more Carter and Goodwins work as opposed to Fowles. Like the article states, his work fits to a psychedelic theme which is not how I see Hastings.
