ファッションデザイナーを夢見るエロイーズ（トーマシン・マッケンジー）は、ロンドンのデザイン学校に入学する。しかし同級生たちとの寮生活に馴染めず、ソーホー地区の片隅で一人暮らしを始めることに。新居のアパートで眠りに着くと、夢の中で60年代のソーホーにいた。そこで歌手を夢見る魅惑的なサンディ（アニャ・テイラー＝ジョイ）に出会うと、身体も感覚も彼女とシンクロしていく。夢の中の体験が現実にも影響を与え、充実した毎日を送れるようになったエロイーズは、タイムリープを繰り返していく。だがある日、夢の中でサンディが殺されるところを目撃してしまう。その日を境に現実で謎の亡霊が現れ始め、徐々に精神を蝕まれるエロイーズ。そんな中、サンディを殺した殺人鬼が現代にも生きている可能性に気づき、エロイーズはたった一人で事件の真相を追いかけるのだが……。（公式サイトより）

前情報なしに見ると、主人公エロイーズの激変ぶりについていけず、混沌とした世界を一緒に楽しむことができる。最初のシーンでは歌とダンスとファッションが好きな田舎の子だったのに、どんどんと転落していく。この転落していく、という考え方は都会が良いものだと捉えている見方だなと気持ち悪くなるのだけれども。

主人公エロイーズは母と同じように自分が狂うことに怯えているわけではないが、どこか幻覚が見えていることに内心があるようだ。しかし、見えている時点で素養はあるのだ。そういった、どこか人と違うところが彼女を浮かせてしまい、初日デビューは失敗し、うるさいところでは寝られなかったり男性に対して過敏になってしまったりと彼女の神経質具合を彷彿させるシーンが盛りだくさんなのだ。そして早々と引っ越してしまうが、死者の残留に敏感な彼女にとっては最悪の部屋を選んだというのが後々わかる。

さて、本作ではサンディーはとても魅力的な人物である。少なくともエロイーズにとっては。最初は。キラキラした世界に入り浮かれ、騙され、落ちていく。そう、エロイーズはサンディーとシンクロしているのだ。追体験だ。

６０年代のロンドンのことなんてまったく知らないが、つい最近、いや現在でも女性は消費されるものである、残念ながら。声に出せない悲しみを追体験する。狂気じみた方法ではあるが、誰かの痛みを体験することは容易ではない。それでも許容できるエロイーズは優しい。

まとまりのない文章ではあるが、こんな映画である。もう少し６０年代のファッションと音楽が楽しめると個人的には嬉しかった。現代も過去もそこらへんが少し薄味である。

The Outfit (2022): Review

So I rented this movie off of Amazon Prime as a belated birthday gift to myself. I’ve been wanting to watch it for awhile, mostly because Dylan O’Brien is in it. And also the time period it is set in. I was not disappointed spending $4.99 to rent it....I might actually buy it since I liked it so much. I am going to keep this spoiler free, as best as I can, for those that haven’t seen it. This movie is one that takes place in the same building the entire film. Literally, every scene is within this tailors shop. I haven’t seen a lot of movies like that, so that makes it more interesting if you ask me. To give a summary, without giving anything super important away,  I will phrase it like this: You have the main character of Leonard, a tailor (or cutter as he refers to himself several times in the film), his secretary Mable, and then mobsters Richie Boyle, Francis, Roy Boyle, and the La Fontaine crew. The back of the tailor shop is used as a place for mobsters to drop off envelopes containing important info and or cash I assume. The mobsters assume that there is a rat in their midst since someone has been ratting them out to La Fontaine crew and police. There is a tape that supposedly exposes this rat. I won’t say anything else on it. I’m not good with spoiler free stuff, but I’m trying my best. Even with the trailer itself, it doesn’t give much away. When I watched the trailer I wasn’t too sure what it was about or what the end goal would be of the movie.

I will say that while watching this, there were several moments where my brain went, “Ah, this could be turned into a fanfiction story.” So, yeah... Take a guess what moments you think I’m referring to. lol

The twist in this movie you can start to see around half an hour in. The grand scheme of things isn’t entirely revealed until the end, but you put the puzzle pieces together along the way using dialogue and the interactions between characters. It’s subtle and slow, I suppose, but effective. And the ending was...satisfying. Lenoard and Mable both got what they wanted in the end. 

I honestly didn’t recognize any of the other actors than Dylan O’Brien, but I thought they all did a great job too. Overall, I would say this move is very underrated because I don’t recall seeing trailers for it, movie posters, etc. I just happened to stumble upon the trailer when I was on YouTube. It came out in March of last year, yet no one was talking about it.

If you like crime, period pieces, mystery, Dylan O’Brien, and mobsters, I would very much consider checking this movie out; it’s on Amazon Prime. This was made last year, but there is a movie of the same name that was made back in 1973, although I do no know how similar they are.

マイノリティーとマジョリティー、誰を中心に置くかで世界は一転する。ルビーにとって家では聴覚障害者がマジョリティー側になり、学校ではそんな家族がいることでマイノリティーになる。どちらもすごく狭い世界だ。家業である漁業はあんなにも広い海を相手にしているのに、どうして狭い世界のことでウジウジしてしまうのだろうか。そう、客観的に見ればそう思えるが当事者はいつだって視野狭窄に陥ってしまう。本作において感じたのはそこだ。
