Russian Su-35 fighter would have been shot down by Russia's own air defense system

Russian air defenses near the front lines in the Zaporizhzhia region, in southern Ukraine, shot down one of Moscow's advanced fighters, according to images circulating online seem to show.

Russian air defense systems shot down a Russian Su-35 multifunctional fighter around the occupied Ukrainian city of Tokmak, Russian and Ukrainian military bloggers, as well as open source intelligence accounts, reported on Friday.

The Fighterbomber channel on Telegram, connected to the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS), posted a brief and solemn message on Friday with a photo of a Flanker, saying "Eternal flight, brother..."

The Russian authorities did not confirm the reported incident. The images could not be confirmed independently and the Russian Ministry of Defense did not comment on the case.

"Video of the shooting down of a Russian Su-35 tonight," posted the Russian channel WarGonzo Telegram. "The Russian air defense did its best, firing at friendly forces."

"...Tokmak is restless," wrote the Ukrainian channel War Monitor Telegram. "Very early - the shooting down of an enemy tactical aircraft. We are waiting for details in the morning."

Later, War Monitor posted an update.

"The good news is that less the Su-35 of the Russian air defense forces during the night over Tokmak."

Western analysts say that the Russian air force has an unusually high rate of losses by friendly fire, due to factors such as restricted training time, few experienced pilots and the pressures of constant combat.

According to the Dutch open source intelligence media Oryx, Russia has lost four Su-35 jets since its troops crossed Ukrainian territory on February 24, 2022.

Tokmak is the main target of Ukraine's ongoing counter-offensive through Zaporizhzhia Oblast and is about 32 kilometers from Ukrainian lines and within reach of air defense systems such as Ukraine's SA-11 Buk.

Russia has often used its Sukhoi Su-35 fighter, which it considers a fourth-generation aircraft with fifth-generation technology, for its ongoing war effort in Ukraine.

The area around Tokmak, which was captured by Russian forces in the first weeks of large-scale war, is on the road from Ukraine to the occupied city of Melitopol. The Kiev counter-offensive, which began in early June, hopes to advance through the well-prepared Russian defenses on the road to Tokmak, to Melitopol, before reaching the Sea of Azov.

The Su-35 is a Russian fighter of air superiority, with secondary air-to-ground capacity. Russia widely uses this type of aircraft against Ukrainian troops and civilian infrastructure. Lately, the Su-35 are known to launch gliding bombs to reach Ukrainian settlements near the front line.
