SOCIAL SNAPSHOT ! [ 2/5 ]

Fable’s YouTube channel currently has 1.6 million subscribers and 639 videos. The channel was launched in late 2017, though no videos were uploaded until the spring of 2018, when the group’s lineup was finalized and slowly introduced to the public. The majority of their content is split into five main categories, most of them containing smaller sections.

ON THE RECORD is Fable’s main variety show. The seasons air sporadically, often centering around large events in their career. Currently, there are five seasons.

경천동지 / TAKE THE WORLD BY STORM — The first season, which followed the group from the end of their debut preparations to the beginning of their debut promotions, ran for eight episodes in almost real time, from July to August 2018. It’s often used as a baseline for demonstrating the group’s growth. Common sentiments are “It’s so nice to see that Haksu and Andrew don’t hate each other like this anymore” and “Remember when they used to be scared of Jaeseop?”. They tried very hard to be funny and it was very obvious.

LIVE IN ASIA — Taking a bit more of a relaxed approach to variety, their second season was filmed during their first Asia tour. The six episodes aired in September 2019, shortly after the tour concluded. They split into four pairs to complete an almost Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt around the cities they were visiting. The winning pair was Kiyoung and Andrew.

겨울방학 / WINTER BREAK — The third season showcased Fable’s first company-sponsored vacation. They stayed on Jeju Island for a week and a half, filming the ten episodes that aired from January to March 2021. Since filming took place during winter, they spent most of their time indoors, except for one rather sad visit to the beach.

AROUND THE WORLD — During Fable’s world tour, they brought back the format of the second season. Season four is comprised of seven episodes, released from September to October 2022. This time, they competed in two teams. Andrew is a two-time winner, accompanied by teammates Haksu and Intak. Other highlights of this season include Eunsu’s brief participation via FaceTime, and guest appearances by Mingeun and Andrew’s families.

축제 2023 — Aptly named for the current year, the most recent season has twelve episodes, aired inconsistently from April to August 2023. In celebration of Fable’s fifth anniversary, the season accompanied the release of their second full album and its repackage, featuring conceptually related trips around Korea.

BY ◯◯, also known as the BYLINE SERIES is the solo content of each of the Fable members. The videos range from vlogs to covers to whatever else is on their minds. The upload schedules are determined by the members themselves. In order of popularity, the smaller series are:

BY HAKSU — As arguably the most popular member, it makes sense for his videos to perform the best. Haksu was also the first to start uploading solo content in late 2019. He tends to release a lot of song covers with a few much-beloved vlogs sprinkled in between. Andrew can often be found playing a piano accompaniment in the background.

BY BYEONGHWI — In some alternate universe, Byeonghwi is a YouTuber instead of an idol. He has a knack for being engaging on camera—a skill that also serves him well in his current career—framing shots, and editing it all himself. As a result, he uploads about once a month. Each video is an event, as they show off the ordinary lives of himself and the rest of the group.

BY MINGEUN — If there’s one thing Mingeun’s going to do, it’s cover a song better than the original artist, at least according to the comment sections on his few videos with their comment sections enabled. Most of his videos are vocal or dance—sometimes both—covers of kpop songs he likes, indie pop songs Andrew introduced to him, and whatever else he’s listening to at the moment. He has a few very popular covers, though most are not.

BY YEJUN — When it comes to Andrew’s individual videos, they’re almost indistinguishable from any of his livestreams. They all take place at night, and his nights are almost indistinguishable from each other as well. He goes to the twenty-four hour convenience store, he tries to write music, he stares up at the few visible stars in the sky—all captured in 480p.

BY KIYOUNG — Judging solely from Kiyoung’s videos, it’s very difficult to tell that his job is being an idol. Sure, the other members make brief appearances in his vlogs here and there, but most of them show off more of his life outside of work. Most of his friends aren’t idols, and their faces are carefully blurred out or hidden in each of his videos, making it look like he shares his meals with a bunch of apparitions.

BY INTAK — For a music producer, Intak makes videos with extremely poor audio. His are always ASMR-esque, but with a shitty phone microphone instead of a more professional one. He shows off his music production process, speaking as little as possible. He tends to leave it to the editors to write evocative captions for his accompanying visuals.

BY JAESEOP — Jaeseop’s videos come once every few months, usually immediately before or after promotions. It’s become a running joke that an upload from him means a comeback is right around the corner. Almost everything he shows off in his videos was previously seen in the more frequent uploads of the other members. When it comes to putting together his own solo content, he does not have a single original thought in his head.

BY EUNSU — A now defunct series. For a few months between when he started the series and when he left the group, he interacted the most with fans. He would give requested advice to fans based on his limited knowledge from his lived experiences. The comment section of his videos would often correct him, or argue that he should not be listened to.

LEGEND OF FABLE is another one of the group’s reality shows, produced in conjunction with Mnet. Its six episode run spanned from February 12, 2020 to March 18, 2020. Very loosely inspired by the Joseon era story The Tale of Cho Ung, the members played the roles of eight princes vying for power. Fitting in with their concept, their various activities somehow managed to extol Confucian values in the twenty-first century. The result of the casual competition was indecisive, leaving it up to the fans and viewers to debate who would have made the best theoretical ruler of Korea.

A second season was rumored to somehow follow Kim Manjung’s The Nine Cloud Dream and assumed to air some time in 2021. There have been no updates since then.

OFF THE RECORD is the overarching playlist for all of their behind the scenes content. This includes:

PLAY-BLE — Most of the behind the scenes content is within this series. Everything from MV filming to concept film shootings to recording studio behinds can be found here.

AIR-BLE — Extra broadcast videos is the second of the behind content categories. This is mostly just compilations of moments where someone turned a camera on backstage at a music show. It also includes a bit of extra content from their concerts, tours, fansigns, and other live performances.

STAGE-BLE — The more fun performances are also considered behind the scenes content. Normal dance practices, themed dance practices, live practices, part switch versions, etc. are all grouped together. The most popular of these is a Goblin (2016)-themed dance practice of their 2020 song, 꽃처럼.

The last category of content is all of their music videos. On very rare occasions, they’ll film music videos for their b-sides. It’s much more likely for them to release live or other similar performance versions. Their most-viewed video remains their 2020 breakout hit, 가자, sitting at 74 million views.

EXCLUSIVE: Young K sends ‘Letters with notes’ to fans in joyous return; talks about evolving as a musician, upcoming DAY6 anniversary

“This time can’t be stopped / When the season changes / where no regrets are left / this time is aflame / followed by blooming spring / remember this time / never let it fade away / for all my life / let it be summer,” – croons singer-songwriter Young K in his pre-release track ‘Let It Be Summer’ from his full-length album Letters With Notes. As the 29-year-old multi-hyphenated musician is back from his two-year hiatus (as he was serving in the military), he compares his life to the changing seasons while expressing the desire to maintain youthful enthusiasm. The melodic pop-punk track definitely enhances the vocals of the gifted singer, who was missed from the music scene for the past two years. Over the past 8 years, Young K, birth name Kang Young Hyun, has about 160 songs copyrighted under his name. He has been the bassist, lead vocalist, and rapper in DAY6 and continues to excel as a versatile singer. He is easily one of the most valuable musicians of our time who often dabbles in different genres including rock, pop-rock, and alternative rock. Returning to the music scene after two years with Letters with notes, the 11-track album, which he was heavily involved in from scratch, sees him play with a lot of nostalgia. While ‘dreamer’ has influences of ‘60s rock-n-roll, ‘babo’ has elements of ‘60s rock with the groove of R&B; ‘waited’ has that ‘90s melodic modern rock rhythm, ‘playground’ infuses the elements of ‘60s Motown funk and rhythm and blues. He ended the song ‘Guard You’ from his 2021 album Eternal with ‘I’ll Hold You Until The End’ and begins with the same lyric in ‘nothing but’, the title track of his new album where he is unable to let go of the love. It is poetic how he uses a metaphor for the world ending in the first track whereas in his latest track, uses the same line as his world is collapsing. There is a reason Young K is called a gifted musician. He plays around with sounds and easily makes you go through varied emotions. This album takes you on a journey of different phases of love, which comes in any form, and the beauty and intricacies of it. Discharged from his military service in April 2023, Young K became the first Korean idol to join the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army (KATUSA). It is the branch of military service that requires applicants with fluency in English to a high degree and only recruits about 2,000 men every year. Between April and August, he had four months to prepare and complete the album. Addressing his fans over the three-day concert held at Kwangwoon University’s Donghae Culture and Arts Center in Nowon-gu, Seoul between September 1-3, Young K said, as per Korea Herald, “The opening to today’s set list is also the first track in my new album. While working on this song, I imagined the moment I finally stepped on stage to meet you. The first words that came to my mind were, ‘I’m nervous,’ and that’s how I started the lyrics. Then I wanted to ask if you’ve been well and eaten well. I’m so happy to be performing in front of you.” Before enlisting, Young K exclusively told Bollywood Hungama in 2021, “I learned to love more. The love My Days have shown made me think about it a lot and since I write and sing about it, I guess it was one of the biggest issues and concepts I tried to know more about. I can't say I know what love exactly is, but I did learn how to give more.” Now, as he returned, we spoke to him again and this time. He had a lot more to share about his craft and his creative process of making Letters with notes.

First and foremost Young K, welcome back. The music scene has missed you and your soothing vocals. How much have you missed releasing music for your audience?

Young K: First of all, thank you for the kind words. It's been a while, so I've waited for this moment quite a lot. As an artist, I thought it'd be important to come back with an album as soon as possible, so here it is.

Congratulations on the Letters with notes. One of the teasers said ‘6 sides of Young K’ and mentioned Hexagon. Symbolically, the hexagon also stands for harmony and balance. After your return from the military, what significance does this album hold for you and why was this an apt album title?

Young K: 'Letters With Notes' can mean the lyrics, which are literally letters that has notes. The sum of those letters turns into a song, which is an individual letter sent to the world. 11 letters all combined, the album itself became 'Letters With Notes'.

A full-length album is truly a heavy work. When did you begin to put together 11 tracks? Which was the first track and last track you worked on?

Young K: All of the recordings began after I was discharged, but I had been having ideas beforehand. So it's really hard to say when the exact album preparation began. All of the ideas were mixed up, so I don't really remember which one came first.

The pre-release pop-punk track ‘let it be summer’ truly narrates the youthful enthusiasm of life. Also, the song is so Young K, it’s great to see you back. Where do you draw the inspiration for a song like this one?

Young K: The track itself had a very powerful energy, so I wanted to narrate something that would match the vibe. I thought youth holds an explosion of feelings and emotions, so I tried comparing life to change of seasons, having summer as the most burning era.

There are 11 tracks on the album but you chose ‘nothing but’ as the main track. The blending of the '60s British sound with 80s American hard rock ballads is a truly unique way to approach the song. The song is about someone ‘unable to let go of love’. Tell me your approach regarding this track and how you decided on making it the title song.

Young K: Producer Jisang Hong and I were talking about how I tend to have a hard time letting go of things. And I guess this concept turned into a song. An example would be – sometimes me having a hard time leaving food behind even when there's no need to finish everything. After submitting all the demos, we went through a monitoring system to choose a title song. And ‘nothing but' was selected.

There are so many favourites on the album but one particular track that caught attention was ‘natural’ which signifies that you don’t have to be insecure in love. Am I right? What can you tell me about it?

Young K: The word 'natural' caught my attention for some reason, and I started thinking about what could be natural. Breathing, having a meal, the flow of time and such came to my mind. It added on to how it's natural to love, so there's no need to worry.

This album feels so personal in terms of how you go about the storytelling. When you work on an album on this scale where you have so many songs to create, what is the progression like? Is it exciting or does it get stressful?

Young K: It's always exciting and stressful at the same time. To make sure it's made at a good quality, even when it seems like it's over I feel like there has to be a point where you go through it. So I always check whether it's good to be presented or not. I'm not a perfectionist, but it's the least I can do.

Thematically, the album seems to be about different stages. What is it about “love” that excites and do you think you were able to showcase it through this full-length album?

Young K: "Love" can be in countless different forms. Love for your family, love for My Days(fans), love towards music, etc. Without love in our lives, I feel like it'd be very difficult to go on.

Are you someone deeply romantic? Is this why the majority of themes of your music reflect that emotion?

Young K: I consider myself a storyteller as I'm writing, and I guess I wish to talk about various stories from many different views. In music, I don't think I want to define that storyteller as someone in a certain way. So yes, sometimes romantic, sometimes maybe not.

Are you someone who is hyper-focused during the process of album making or someone who enjoys a good balance between work and life?

Young K: I would prefer a good balance of work and life. I don't feel like I need to be intensely focused on album-making only for a period of time, but when I am at the session, I am focused.

What do you enjoy more – songwriting or producing? Are there any times when you feel words aren’t flowing how you wanted? In those times, where do you seek inspiration from?

Young K: Whenever I get a writer's block, I take a break. Short or long. I try to refresh my mind and look around. If nothing found, I try to let my mind take me anywhere to come up with something that's adequate for the music. That's also why in my everyday life I let myself be open to all the ideas that come to me. For now, I consider myself a singer and a performer most importantly. And the rest, I'm good with anything.

The fans are so happy to see you back doing radio. That gives so much joy to everyone but also showcases your relaxed side. Are you elated to be back? Do you enjoy being on the radio?

Young K: Radio lets me look into bits of many lives. I get to communicate with lots of new people and think from different perspectives. For example, a kid says she really doesn't want to go to school. The next person says she also doesn't want to go to school, but this time, it’s coming from a teacher. Another merit would be me being able to send my voice to My Days and my parents every day. How can I not be elated?

DAY6 will complete 8 years on September 7, a day prior to my birthday, which I am always pumped about. Interestingly, the album drops in the same month. Is this month special to you? Have you ever sat back and wondered about your musical journey over the years?

Young K: Happy Birthday! From time to time I tend to look back on what I've done. I realize what I've done good, and what I’ve lacked. I learn from the mistakes and grow. The more I get to know, the more I see. Never perfected it, but it was the best that I could do.

I have often wondered if you ever had a chance to watch any content from India or heard any of the artists. If yes, what or who are they?

Young K: I'm still not quite familiar with artists from India, but I'm willing to know more! Please give me recommendations!

The last time you left a message for Indian fans of DAY6, they were extremely delighted and also praying for your safe return. Is there a message you want to leave for fans on this comeback?

Young K: I gotta say thank you for all the support. The only thing I wish for you guys is to stay healthy and happy. Hope I get a chance to visit you guys too!

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To in March

Wow, somehow it's already month 3 of 2024. In addition to Daylight Savings Time (March 10 - Spring ahead), Ramadan (March 10-April 9), St. Patrick's Day (March 17), first day of Spring (March 19), Palm Sunday (March 24), Holi (March 25), Good Friday (March 29), and Easter (March 31) here is what's on my radar this month:

Movies:

Dune: Part Two

Denis Villeneuve has become one of the great visual stylists of recent years thanks to films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. I named his film Dune Part One, one of my Best Movies of 2021. How good Part One really was depends on Part Two, which drops 3/1.

Knox Goes Away

Michael Keaton has always been a tremendous actor and now he's back in the director's chair for the second time with a starring role about a contract killer who has a form of dementia and he attempts to connect with his estranged son. Oh and Al Pacino co-stars! Opens 3/15.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

A Ghostbusters sequel is a tall order. Jason Reitman's 2021 sequel Ghostbusters Afterlife actually had its moments and it had a lot to say about living up to a legacy, in the film it's the grandchildren of Egon, but it could also be Jason Reitman about the fear and honor of continuing a film series that his dad Ivan began. The new sequel is directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote this with Jason. The fact that original Ghostbuster cast members are back gives me hope. Sequel drops 3/22.

Sheer Mag Playing Favorites

I was lucky enough to see Philly rockers Sheer Mag at House of Blues in May 2022. After two solid albums, they are finally back with their third, dropping on 3/1. (Review to come)

Liam Gallagher & John Squire Liam Gallagher John Squire

Former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher's solo career has been a mixed back, but his album As You Were was one of my Best Albums of the 2010s. As shown in the 2019 documentary Liam Gallagher: As It Was, he doesn't need to play music for money or fame, he has plenty. He plays because he loves music. Now he's doing a new album with John Squire, former guitarist for The Stone Roses. Sounds like a serious meeting of musical minds! Album drops 3/1.

The Black Crowes Happiness Bastards

The first new studio album from The Black Crowes since 2009 is cause for celebration. After a bitter break-up in 2015, the brothers Chris and Rich Robinson announced they were reuniting in 2019. In early 2020, I caught an acoustic live show from Brothers of a Feather (my last concert before the pandemic lockdowns) and since that show, The Black Crowes have had some reunion tours (NOTE: by reunion - I mean Chris and Rich, not the original lineup). They've released some anniversary albums, but this marks the group's first studio album in 15 years. Looking forward to it when it drops on 3/15.

The Dandy Warhols Rockmaker

I've always loved Portlandia's The Dandy Warhols. Through this blog, I've had the pleasure of interviewing lead Dandy Courtney Taylor-Taylor and keyboardist / bassist Zia McCabe, the band's 2019 Boston concert, and their excellent 2019 album Why You So Crazy. Now the band is back with a new album dropping on 3/15! (Review to come)

Film Festivals:

Boston Underground Film Festival

Boston's fun genre film festival for horror, fantasy and bizarre is back. I've had the pleasure of covering this fest from 2016 to 2019 and returning last year. The fest returns to The Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from 3/20 to 3/24!

Conventions:

Northeast Comic Con

I've had a blast covering the Northeast Comic Con for years now (read my coverage here) and the Spring 2024 edition returns with guests like Kevin Chapman (who I worked with on Monument Ave), a Growing Pains reunion of Tracey Gold, Jeremy Miller and Julie McCullough, The Go-Go's drummer Gina Schock and more! Convention is at the Boxborough Regency (Boxborough, MA) from 3/8-3/10. (Coverage to come).

Awards Season:

The awards season for the best of 2023 continues on with the Razzie Awards, actually the Worst of 2023 (3/9) and the Academy Awards (3/10).

What Owl House means to me

TW!: Self Harm, Depression (undiagnosed), anxiety (undiagnosed), suicidal thoughts

The finale of owl house has hit me very hard. I am writing this as of April 7th, 2023, 10:53 pm, EST, approximately 11-12 hours before Watching a dreaming airs and most likely longer before I see it.

I didn’t join the Owl House bandwagon until about a year after it’s release. I binged watched all of season 1 in a day in July, on a shitty loft bed in a cabin on my great aunt’s lake, ignoring my asshole cousin and her asshole friends. This was a few months after I had come out as Bi

I fell in love with the show instantly. The main character was an undiagnosed adhd bisexual bullied kid, just like me. People didn’t understand her just like nobody understood me. She escaped to magical worlds just like me. She was close with her mother, just like me. She was everything to me.

Her best friend, Willow, was a plus sized and bullied girl, just like me.

Her best friend, Gus, was considered a gifted kid in his field who got tricked by people he trusted a lot, just like me

Her love interest had a parent encourage her to stop being friends with someone for being the wrong sort, just like me

It felt like the show was made just for me, with every character being a reflection of my own qualities. I was about to start 8th grade, and I was worried about showing up to my Catholic school open and bi. This show helped me with my fear.

And then August 31st, 2021 happened. I started my first relationship ever, as well as my first relationship with a girl. And Owl house was there for that

During the whole time we were dating, Owl House was there. We were both big fans, and recited quotes of Amity and Luz to each other, the dumb gay fangirls we were.

During the rocky parts of our relationship when it felt like there was nothing we could talk about, we could talk about owl house.

And Owl House was there October 2nd, 2022, when we decided to end it. There are still scenes I struggle to watch because of it. She and I are still best friends, and we still are dumb fangirls, but the show will never feel like it did before.

But like a metaphor for my life, my love for Lumity was overshadowed by Huntlow. As I started to be more into guys, the straight passing ship of Owl House rose to be my favorite. I still love Lumity, but like my relationship, it lost it’s thrill. As if when she and I broke up, Lumity did too.

Huntlow also connected to me because it displayed a curvy girl being adored by this attractive guy. He had a crush on her, not the other way around. Guys didn’t/don’t like me because of my weight a lot, so seeing that couple on screen gave me hope that a guy like Hunter was out there, waiting for me.

And Owl house was there during another time too. Before she and I broke up, before Huntlow became my brainrot, before I even knew anyone was shipping Hunter with people, I was hurting.

Spring 2022 was the worst time for my mental health ever. I was forced into a musical with 4 weeks to learn my lines and if I didn’t in time I would be screamed at by my director. I would put off lines to read fanfic or belt songs out of my vocal range to ruin my voice so I wouldn’t have to do the show. I committed self harm. Every night I prayed God would make it stop or kill me. I had horrible nightmares about my director and the show. It got so bad it felt like I was looking at the face of a dark black vortex, ready to suck me into the deep end where I would die. I had a horrible panic attack on stage during rehearsal, one time. I couldn’t breath, I bawled my eyes out, I scratched and ripped at my arms.

and a few days later, Hollow Mind came out, and Hunter had a panic attack on screen.

I knew it was a different situation. He was breaking from an abusive household while I was just being dramatic about a shitty play (at least that’s what people told me.) And yet, I felt seen. I saw myself in hunter, just like I saw myself in all of the other characters. That day on, he was my favorite. He still is.

So Owl House ending feels like a punch in the gut to me. It hurts so much that I’ll never see these characters on screen again. I’ll (probably) never see Hunter and Willow kiss on screen, canonically. Almost like a metaphor for me never being kissed myself.

And what makes it even worse, is that because of scheduling issues, I can’t watch it live with you all. I’ll probably have to watch it on my phone, on YouTube, hours or even days after it releases. Almost another metaphor for how in 5th grade, my friend was forced to leave the school and I was absent the day he said goodbye to everyone. An event that defines me and my emotions a lot.

So there you have it. Sorry for the trauma dump, but I needed to vent about why this show means so much to me and why I’m heartbroken it’s ending before it’s all over.

i have full faith this fandom will not die. Us weirdos have to stick together.

But that doesn’t make this any less painful for me

G2 Esports Win Inaugural Lec Winter Split, Punch Ticket to Msi With Victory Over Mad Lions

G2 Esports reached the top of Europe for the eighth time to begin their 2023 League of Legends competitive season. The squad humiliated the MAD Lions by finishing the Winter Split without dropping a single match while enthralling their fans at home and in the LEC studio with odd draught picks. They not only secured the top spot for the 2023 MSI, which will take place in May in London, but also the first-ever LEC Shield. MAD Lions shattered the G2 era in 2021 by winning back-to-back titles, but they could not oppose them this time. G2 reclaimed the throne on their terms: with a proactive style, mind-blowing draft picks, and a perfect symbiosis between raw individual talent and teamwork. In their third LEC final in a row, G2 dominated the Rift uncontested for the first two games thanks to the team’s cohesive playstyle that shut down MAD Lions completely. With Yike’s ganks and Mikyx’s continuous roams, G2 had control of the Rift, leaving their opponents to walk blindly in their own jungle. The first victory was only a preview of what G2 was cooking behind the scenes, and it was in game two that they served the full course to MAD Lions. Although G2 were in the lead and applied a lot of pressure around the map, MAD Lions initiated various advantageous skirmishes. But this initiative alone wasn’t enough to take down G2’s coordinated playstyle, who turned around the engages and capitalized on their opponents’ mistakes. Not for the first time in the matchup, the last game was also the most hard-fought one. MAD Lions took the lead from the start thanks to Elyoya’s ganks that brought many advantages to his team across the map. They were in the driving seat for the majority of the game, punishing their opponents for every little mistake they made and collecting objectives from all over the Rift—until G2 decided it was enough. In a decisive fight in the top lane, G2 turned the tables and started closing the gap that MAD Lions had grown in the past 25 minutes. Fight after fight, G2 kept shutting down their opponents, and despite Elyoya stealing a Baron under their’ noses, nothing could stop them from closing the series. For the third time in a row, the LEC Split Final ended with a 3-0 scoreline as G2 celebrated their tenth title in the region, snatching the first ticket to the 2023 MSI. Designer Spotlight: Nell Kim, Kate Spade New York

The first Kate Spade New York bag Nell Kim fell in love with was a 3D clutch in the shape of a car—it was unexpected, perfectly crafted, and just made her smile. Now a designer at Kate Spade New York, Kim works with her team to bring unimaginable pieces to life, creating functional, joyful handbags that continue the brand's rich history of novelty designs.

This summer brings us Hoppkins: Italian leather molded in the shape of a frog and printed with a bold gingham print, this little guy is the perfect accent piece for a special event or unexpected pop for the everyday.

Can you describe the design process for the Hoppkins bag?

Novelty is an important brand code at the heart of Kate Spade New York. When we started on concepts for the Summer 2021 collection, we were drawn to a wicker frog handbag from a past season that we all loved. So we decided to reimagine it—this time in both wicker and leather, with an updated shape. We worked with gingham across product categories for Summer. It’s an important print for the season, so we thought it would be fun to do Hoppkins in a colorful gingham print instead of just solid color. Brainstorming and research take the longest when working on novelty bags, but things became easier once we solidified the overall idea. Finally, with the help of my team and cross-functional partners, Hoppkins came to life!

Where did you pull inspiration from when designing this bag?

We took a lot of inspiration from actual images of frogs and all the different frog species but also looked into vintage products that had showcased frog decorations of all kinds. Between those, we were able to form the design.

What were some of the tactical things you wanted to achieve when the team was dreaming up this frog?

It was important that the Hoppkins bag be fun and stylish but also fully functional. We wanted to make it realistic, but not too realistic— there’s a fine line between bold and cartoon-ish. We also focused on making sure it was big enough to carry everyday essentials, like your phone, wallet, lip balm, etc.

What elements of the frog did you have to problem-solve/come up with a solution for? Did those ideas come from anywhere unexpected?

Inspiration can come from anywhere! One day I had a Zoom call with my team and saw the older wicker bag sitting on a shelf in the background of one of my coworkers’ screens. I thought it was just a cool decorative object at first, and then he told me it was a Kate Spade New York bag, and my mind went racing from there. I took some inspiration from the original bag but updated it to have a rounder belly so it could sit upright on its own. The very first sample was an abstract side-view of a frog, which looked nice on paper, but the actual sample didn’t have the dimensions that we wanted. It took some trial and error, but we finally got there!

Once the initial sketches are done, what milestones happen between that sketch and final product?

After completing the initial sketch, we worked with the 3D team to put together a full 3D rendering of what the handbag would look like in real life (I’m absolutely amazed by 21st-century technology!). Then we continued to work through multiple rounds of sketches and physical samples to perfect it.

What do you listen to while designing?

Music is so important to me, and I like listening to the right song at the right moment. When I’m designing Spring and Summer collections, I listen to a lot of uplifting, summery songs such as “Space Song” by Beach House, “Polarised” by Cosmo’s Midnight, “Starry Night” by Peggy Gou, and “Saint Tropez” by Post Malone—just to name a few!

What is your favorite part about being a designer?

I love every single moment of being a designer, especially at Kate Spade New York, but my favorite part is when I see designs that I worked on in our stores. Turning an idea that was just in my head into a physical product is pretty amazing. I also love seeing people wearing our designs on the street or a train. I always have the urge to go up to people and tell them I helped design a piece they are wearing, but I’ve never actually done it. So if you see someone looking at your bag and secretly smiling on an NYC subway, it is probably me!

What advice would you give to young designers starting out in the industry?

Work hard, be humble, and just be nice to people. It’s a small world, and the industry is even smaller. You never know who you’ll bump into or work with in the future.

If you had to use three words to describe the bag, what would they be?

Joyful

Colorful

Smile-inducing

❖ author’s note : i’m busy preparing for finals but here’s a small piece for the new year so no one forgets me...i hope y’all didn’t, at least not yet. anywho, take this as my token of gratitude for 2021, i appreciate you all so much ♡

i. winter —

The school bell chimes. Five minutes later, you’re pushing yourself through the hall to get to the student council’s office. Plenty of ‘see you’ are echoing back and forth, some in your direction so you struggle as hard as you can to reply.

Chaos settles once the school empties out. Someone catches your eyes, then. A boy with a red scarf around his neck.

“Yo, Jisung,” you inquire with a slight jerk of your body because you can’t physically wave with the bulky box in your arms. It’s full of papers about upcoming Christmas events—you’re not dropping any of that.

Jisung waves back and you’re half-expecting a cheeky smile from him—there’s none. Something restrains you from frowning. He just woke up so the fever might still be there, you don’t want to push him. His hair is a disbelieved mess, his blazer crooked on his shoulders. His face is redder than usual, too; it’s more noticeable with that red scarf.

“Thanks for bringing me to the nurse’s office...and eating lunch with me.“ Jisung scratches his nape as if your existence alone causes him distress. “Do you uh- President, do you remember what I told you in there?”

“You don’t need to call me that,” you sigh, not certain what kind of face you should be making. “And I do remember. I mean...I can’t say that I’m not flattered to hear that as your friend—“

The rest of your own sentence fades into the background and whatever remains is ‘friend’. You just let it slip out unconsciously, without knowing. It doesn’t taste wrong on the tip of your tongue. Yet you’re becoming as flustered as when he said it in the nurse’s office.

You’re not one of those people who usually stand awkwardly by a corner during breaks, watching students trail in and out of class with their group of friends. It’s actually the contrary; there are hordes of students crowding your personal bubble most of the time. A favor, a request, a complaint—the list goes on. You do know people, you just don’t associate yourself with them.

Hence, you’ve never experienced any domestic things that a group of friends would do, let alone being told that.

“I didn’t mean it as a friend,” Jisung interrupts your thoughts.

“...Huh?”

He freezes for a moment, breath hitching as if trying to collect himself. His dark bangs fall over his eyes when his gaze traces the floor. “Of course, I like you as a friend. But what I was trying to say is that I’m in love with you,” he exhales. “In a romantic sense.”

You blink. “For real?” Even you feel offended by your own response. For real? Is that all you can say? What the hell?

“I wouldn’t lie to you.”

“I’m sorry, Jisung. I just don’t feel the same.” You put on the mask of nonchalance that’s used to deal with people. Usually, it feels all too natural but somehow, guilt is nipping at your throat.

Jisung breathes out. Then he shudders like something has just iced his spine. His shoulders quiver and his hands spasm. He lifts his head to face you with eyes that are bright with tears and a smile worthy of its own sun.

“Well, I can’t accept that.”

Winter has gotten colder than last year. You find yourself staring across the street at night, looking at Jisung’s window. No yearly obnoxious holiday decorations, no light, no family dinner invitations. Nothing.

Right before the stars leave the skies, you catch yourself not falling asleep at all.

You might not meet him again.

ii. spring —

“I’m in love with you.”

“Jisung, we’ve talked about this already.”

Never mind that. Han Jisung is way too persistent. Or terribly stubborn. Either way, you’re a bit concerned about him.

There comes Jisung around the corner, again. The same exact spot from one month ago with the same confession, bed head uncombed and a red scarf around his neck. This time around though, he pouts, “I already told you. I can’t accept that!”

A stiff finger rests on your temple. “You’re making this dif- I mean, it’s not like I can help it.”

His features soften as he notices how you rephrased yourself midway—you can’t bring yourself to hurt him no matter how nonchalant you appear to be. “And I can’t help being in love with you, even if it makes things difficult.”

“Hey,” you deadpan. “I’m trying not to hurt your feelings here.”

Jisung takes a step toward you. “Why are you so hell-bent on the fact that someone is in love with you?” He looks tired, you notice. Face too wan, cheeks too gaunt. Still a smile worthy of its own sun. You almost find yourself squinting.

“It’s-well.” You halt, pressing a hand against your forehead. This shouldn’t go on any longer. You won’t let him. It shouldn’t have happened to begin with. “Do you wanna go and sit somewhere?”

You lead him to the school’s backyard where there’s a cage of bunnies. A trail of footprints leads up to the metal gate and then stops. There’s a warm outline left behind as if someone has sat in place and stared at the furry bunch for hours.

“Sit, sit,” you clear your throat. “Please.”

Dumbly, Jisung sits on the second step of the porch with you. The two of you fit yourselves into the outline, shoulders pressing against each other. He’s cold, you notice again.

Winter has been frost-locked. Leaves, blades, and sheaths of tender green come forth, dripping with the soaking rain and cooling breeze. Yet it shouldn’t be cool enough for him to catch a cold.

“So?” A soft laugh. “Your answer?”

You clasp your fingers together tightly when your back straightens. Then, you lower your head to your hands, exhaling, “That’s a loaded question. Can’t we do small talk first?”

Jisung stares at you, his chest numb and his breaths oddly inaudible. Here you are, the one he loved, loves, and will love always. Sitting under the soft sun like you’re both going on a fucking picnic, all nonchalance, and unbothered looseness. Something about this indignity makes him sick.

He’s missed you.

“We can’t,” he says, voice too loud for his own ears. His brain barely registers a hand reaching out until his fingers touch yours, pulling them away from your face.

You startle away like it’s an instinct, eyes wide. “Right, right. Sorry, I’ll just-“ A sharp inhale. “It’s...I think- I still can’t believe it.”

“Come again?” He tilts his head, confused.

Your lips move stutteringly, a chuckle creeping up your throat without any real humor. “About the fact that you said you’re in love with me. Come on now, really? As if anyone could fall for me.”

“Wow, that’s cruel.” Jisung narrows his eyes at you, features distorted with faint anger. Rather than unconvinced, he looks more...insulted as though you have rejected his existence altogether. Before you can blurt out another apology, he continues, “...you hate yourself a lot more than I thought you did. That’s a bit of a shock if I’m being honest.”

He knows that you never apologize wholeheartedly anyway.

You look at him then, simply staring. His voice reverberates all around the walls that confine the tangled mess called your mind. Something seeps in deeper, sparks, flickers, and burns. Fury, Jisung can see it clearly.

You are absolutely furious with him, in a way that you know he’s right and that he didn’t need to state the fucking obvious aloud. “This is so stupid. What do you even like about me?” You turn away, not being able to bear your own reflection in his glassy eyes.

Jisung inhales but you interrupt him.

“One after another...you’re all just the same. People are always flattering me with all sorts of different words. I never know who they’re speaking to, really, because I’m not like that at all. Even though they don’t see me as anything more than the title ‘student’s council president’, they just naturally convince themselves that I’m a good person.”

Jisung can’t help but recoil. Yeah, he’s heard worse, seen worse, done worse, but this is you. The one that he loved, loves, and will love always.

“Making things up about me. Approaching me as you please. Becoming disappointed in me. And then leaving me all alone like I’m a fucking joke.” You face him with a smile—it feels stiff on your face. “You’re just like that too, aren’t you, Han Jisung?”

Silence falls again and for a while, you both sit unmovingly. You catch a glimpse of yourself in his gaze—what you’re afraid of the most is right there. I’m...really hideous.

“Fine, you gave me no choice,” he deadpans, the single word hitting against your eardrums.

A resounding ‘thud’ and your head thrashes against cement. You gasp, the ache throbbing, “What are you—!”

Jisung grips at your collar with fire dust swirling in his eyes as his knuckles turn into an exasperating shade of white. He slams you against the wall again. It hurts. He closes in on you, “You want to know so badly?”

Rather than a wince, a confused noise leaves your lips.

“Truth is, I have always hated you.”

You don’t know what kind of face you’re making anymore.

“Surprised? You should have known,” he jerks the grip and yanks you toward him. “We’ve been with each other since we were kids. Who do you take me for? A fool?”

“That’s not-“

“True? Then tell me, why can’t I get close to you for the past ten fucking years?” Jisung gropes the uniform even more tightly, not giving in no matter how much you’re struggling and kicking him.

“You use people’s fake kindness to your advantage. You look down on others. You’re unbelievably arrogant. Yet you have no regard for yourself whatsoever. Can’t you see, you have a really nasty personality! The only reason why nobody ever cares about you for who you are is that you have never tried to see people for who they are, idiot!!”

For the first time in over a decade, you falter. “Shut up.”

“No, I’m not finished-“

“Shut the fuck up and let me go.”

“I can’t.”

You scream, the sound strangled in your throat, “Why?!”

“Y/N, you might not realize this but you’ve always seemed so fragile. I...I’m afraid if I let you go, you’ll shatter forever and I won’t be able to see you again.

The time you wordlessly hold each other’s gaze is only a second or two but it feels like minutes. Hours. A whole goddamn lifetime playing behind your mind where you’re too powerless to do anything but gawk, reeling in shock.

Fuck, you want to let the hurtful sound slip.

“I can’t believe you just said something so corny with a straight face.” You shove his shoulders yet he stays unmoving.

Jisung missed this, so much that he nearly cries when he finally gets to touch you. Yet he chalks it up because the sensation of your trembling form is so overwhelming, so real and raw. He hasn’t truly felt someone else’s touch in—in—

“You know, you’re making a really pathetic face right now,” he breaks into a smile. With a pull, you collapse completely into his arms. It’s an awkward hug, with your arms hanging on the sides and your knees knocking against his.

You take back a choke. “You—you.”

What’s wrong with you? You can’t even speak.

Suddenly, a small sniffle broadcasts itself right into your ear. “I’m not crying, just so you know, I’m fine,” Jisung draws a shaky breath.

“You should have just said it if you wanted a hug.”

Another sniffle. “Are you sure it’s not you who wanted a hug?”

“Right,” you breathe a warm chuckle into his neck. “So what if I wanted a hug?”

“I’d say, tough luck,” he says and immediately contradicts himself by embracing you closer to his heart.

iii. summer —

The heat makes you want to scream.

You want to scream and sprint to the sea, flinging off your shoes without care because you realistically can’t do that to your responsibilities. You want to run towards the heaving waves and jump with each tiny trickle with the excitement of a five-year-old.

Instead, there’s something else that makes you jump.

“I’m in love with you.”

The sight of him alone pains you. “Go away.”

Jisung shows up again, this time at the student’s council office, where hardly anyone comes and leaves beside you during summer, by the way. With the same winter uniform, his stupid red scarf, and a smile worthy of its own sun. He closes the door briskly. “You know I can’t accept that.”

“Get out. Now.”

“Sorry, no can do,” he decides cheerfully and takes a seat without asking for your permission.

You snap, “Get out of my fucking sight!!!”

“My my, the president is cursing and acting indecently.”

The binder in your hand zooms across the room. It aims for the target—Han Jisung’s pretty visage—and is ready to land on the mark to earn a satisfying scream from the victim.

“Ack—!!!” He dodges it by a strand of hair, however, every color possible drained from his face. “G-God. That was- that was close.”

“I told you to leave,” you sigh, still irritated but somehow not able to bring out the anger anymore. “By the way, aren’t you hot wearing that?”

“I can’t really get rid of them even if I want to,” he replies carefully, tugs his nose under the red fabric of his scarf, and bends down to pick up the poor binder. His expression falls crooked when he sees to it—the spine is warped and broken—that could have been his nose.

So in real Han Jisung’s fashion, he blurts aloud without any care for his life, “You know, you’re plenty scary, Y/N.”

You’ve already walked over to where he is by the time he realizes what he’s got himself into. “Do you want a beating or something?”

“But you’re also really kind,” he asserts with a cough, handing you the binder obediently while tracing random shapes on the tiled floor.

It sets off a weird switch inside you but you’re not sure how sturdy his skull is. “Jisung, I’m just faking it. I’m the student’s council president, that’s what I’m supposed to do.”

Jisung hugs his legs and lifts his head; soft black locks, gentle eyes, chubby cheeks—it’s been a while that you’ve noticed anything other than his pale complexion or the blood-red scarf.

“That’s not it. I really cherish every moment I get to spend with you. The way you listen to whatever I have to say, the way you rearrange your schedule so we can eat together when I’m sick in the nurse’s office. The way you laugh at my awful jokes, the way you worry about me not just because my mom told you to, the way you treat my parents like they’re your own. Even the way you get angry at me or on my behalf.”

“I like the way you take care of me like you mean it. That’s why I’m in love with you. You have no idea how happy I am just to be with you like this. I want us to be family. I won’t tolerate the idea of you being someone else’s.”

You make a sound that’s similar to a cough because the impact of his words simply knocks you breathless. “Didn’t you tell me that you hated me?”

Jisung is trying not to laugh. You can hear it in his voice. “Sorry, that was a lie,” he grins ear to ear. “Did you let my words get to you? Is that why you’re crying?”

Of course, he doesn’t hate you. He’s too dizzy with adoration and stricken with boundless love to hate you.

Something flutters in your chest strangely. “Don’t look, damn it.”

Embarrassed, you attempt to shove him to the floor but he catches your foot right on time. “I love you, okay? I will love you always.”

Your eyes are hot and leaking liquid, just like he said. “Just...fuck you.”

“That’s fair.”

You jerk your leg hard this time, almost bashing it against his head. “Fuck you.”

“Okay, okay.” Jisung lets go, slightly petrified but even the mortification can’t make him avert his gaze.

“I said, don’t look.”

Something cool grabs your hand—it’s wet with tears but he doesn’t mind. Instead, Jisung presses his lips against your palm, lets it cradle his coldness, and breathes in the tenderness.

“Dumbass, you’re just crying,” he tells you quietly. “I don’t care what your tears look like.”

iv. fall —

The time you fear most has arrived; fall is here.

Meaning, a new school year is bound to begin. Meaning, adults can continue to test you and prove that you’re nothing less than a complete fool. Meaning, students may step into your personal bubble as they please, whisking you around until you give them what they want.

Yet people gush over the colors of the dying leaves, how crisp they are as one foot after another trampled over them, how perfect the weather is for reading poems. Meanwhile, your soul becomes so small and shrivels up inside, rattles around, only taking a cowardly peak when responsibilities come waving.

Due to that fact, you have soon concluded that you cannot survive another ten months of sheer torture alone.

So where the hell is the student council when you need them?

You’ve been looking for them all day—during lunch, in the backyard, on the balcony, in the members’ respective classrooms—and your efforts are to no avail. Suspicious. Weirdly suspicious. Of all places, where can they—

Oh.

Therefore as you realize how dense you are, you rush to the council’s office. Your hand shoves the door open.

To your dismay, darkness pitches from the room. There isn’t much that surprises you anymore when it comes to any of their pranks. Which is why when you glimpse the first flicker of someone, your heart doesn’t jolt once. It continues to beat steadily as light floods the room, a few figures pop up, and confetti blows up in your face.

“Everyone, on my count.” Minho gestures with his index finger. “Three, two, one…!”

“PRESIDENT, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!”

Your eardrums explode as a scowl traces your lips, “What the heck? It’s not my birthday.”

“You’re right. It’s not,” Jeongin takes back a cough and holds up a cake with two hands.

Felix offers you a thumbs up. “We decided to use that phrase because it’s concise and convenient.”

“Uh...okay?” You blink, leaving the topic there or you might never hear the end of it, averting your attention to Minho. “And what are you doing here? You graduated months ago.”

“Doesn’t mean I can’t come back for free food,” he smiles meekly.

“I expect nothing less from you.” A dismissive wave; the shock still has yet to settle in. “So what’s the fuss?”

“Since this year is your last, we wanted to do something nice for you! As your fellow members and underlings, we could see your effort the most clearly all this time. Thank you for your hard work, we mean it. Truly.” A cheerful Lia creeps up from behind and throws her entire weight over your shoulder. “Felix baked the cake, by the way.” You’re going to crash, you’re going to crash—

Yeji comes to the rescue, peeling Lia’s hands away from you before tilting her head curiously. “Whose idea was it again? I can’t recall it.”

“Not me,” everybody else choruses.

Ryujin whips out her phone and starts scrolling. “I’m sure there was a message in our group chat, no? There’s nothing? It literally was just here yesterday.”

“Can we just ignore it? You’re making things creepy,” Chaeryeong frowns, rubbing her arms unconsciously.

“Maybe a ghost texted us?” Hyunjin says and gets pulled into an instant headlock because Seungmin isn’t tolerating any of that paranormal shit. “Let—go—what is—wrong with you!! You’re supposed to be the vice president!”

“Keep it up and I’ll bust your head open,” Seungmin deadpans, an ugly shadow looming over his face. Nothing should interfere with his beauty sleep.

“Seriously, you’re ten thousand times scarier than the ghost itself!!!”

Minh rolls his eyes—this is power abuse, he thinks to himself. Your mouth twitches, exhaustion mixing with amusement. You lift a slow hand, curl your fingers, and jab it straight into the side of his stomach. Your friend chokes at the impact, stumbling back a few steps as the room winces in empathy.

“What—“ he wheezes, “—the fuck?”

“Oh, it’s nothing,” you grin and twist your hand. “Just making sure that I’m not dreaming.”

“That’s not how it works!!”

You ignore his cowering form on the floor. “A ghost, you say?” Something clicks.

Oh, you’re kidding, you think stutteringly, You’re kidding me.

“Uh, Prez?” Felix waves a hand in front of your face. “Cake? Let’s eat?”

You snap out of it and back away, starting for the door. “Stay here. I’ll be right back!!”

“Wait! Cake?!” The poor freckled boy yells after you.

“Right, cake! Thanks for the cake! I’ll be right back, I promise!! Don't eat the entire thing, you hear me?!”

Something chokes up inside you as you run. You’re not entirely sure where you’re heading to despite being able to see everything and knowing every corner of the school like the back of your hand.

“Looking for me?”

“Jisung?” You stop, letting out labored breaths.

“I’m here, Y/N.”

“What?”

“Up here, silly.”

Your gaze snaps upward as a sound rustles above the tree. Jisung mouths a small ‘careful’ before stomping on the branch to jump off, his red scarf flying back as he does so. As you’re about to ask what business he has with a tree, Jisung puts a kitten on the ground, waving it off. A smile worthy of its own sun and the winter uniform—he never changes.

“Yo, Jisung,” you say, an echo of an old greeting, heart pounding rapidly.

His hands slide into his pockets. “Missed me?”

“Sure did,” you humor him for a second there but clear your throat right after. “Did you do that? The surprise party?”

“Take a guess?” He tilts his head, a glint of mischief in his eyes.

You hold up a fist. “Take a punch then.”

“Does it really matter, though?” Jisung drags his words, clasps his hands to the back of his head, eyes returning to the blue sky. The sunlight warms him up a little, dusting some colors back on his cheeks.

For a moment long, only the autumn leaves rattle against each other quietly. “Does it not?” You blink, your brain slowly rebooting backward.

He, too, blinks and lets an obnoxious chuckle leave his lips as if he finally understands the punchline to the joke that is your life. “Of course not,” he confirms. “They did it for you. They did it because they love you, because they cherish you as a friend, because you are important to them. Isn’t that enough of a reason?”

Warmth recoils in your chest, pricks your eyes, and forces a calm exhale from your lungs.

Well, you indeed are an absolute idiot. You’re not alone, you don’t have to be so alone, you shouldn’t conclude that you are alone. That will mean neglecting those who truly care for you because they know you’re not all that difficult to love. They can share your burdens, accept your flaws so you may do the same.

Who cares about the ones who left? You have no need for them anymore. Even if the ones by your side now may abandon you someday, you think you won’t be half as miserable because no matter what, you’ll always carry the love they used to harbor for you.

It’s okay to grieve, to be angry, to be hurtful sometimes. You know that you’ll be just fine because those who wish to stay, will stay.

“You should come back to them, you know.”

There's a hand on your shoulder, tentative. You simply stand there and draw in a shaky breath, feeling the fingers slide higher until it brushes across your cheekbone. You catch his hand and hold onto it tightly.

Jisung startles, almost stumbling away but you’re already dragging him along. He can do nothing except let his feet bring him to follow you. The steps are steady, slow; one, two, three. One, two, three. He stops counting in his head when you give his hand a squeeze.

“You should come, too,” a cheerful decision. “Felix baked a cake. You like cakes, don’t you?”

A scoff, “That’s a very obvious fact. You’ve insulted me.”

Your chest heaves with genuine chuckles. “What else do you like then?”

“Well, I also like giraffes,” he admits.

That’s so random. You try not to laugh again. “Do you want to go see one?”

“I don’t really like crowded places,” he starts mumbling under his breath—his throat is tight like he has this sudden urge to cry.

“Fine by me. What else?”

“Let’s see…music?”

You purse your lips. “I was going to say I could take you to a concert but you don’t like crowded places.”

Jisung clings onto your hand with more force—a helpless gesture. “I like video games, too.”

“Oh, that’s easy. Just this once, I’ll stay up late to play with you.”

“Is that a promise?”

“Yes, it’s a promise,” you sigh like you’re completely done with him.

Jisung asserts hurriedly, “What do you like? I want to know what you like-well, I should know what you like but still-“

“Me? I like you, Han Jisung.”

He flinches at how easy you make it sound. “For real?”

“I wouldn’t lie to you,” you say, voice gentle and light as you turn around. “So what’s with the long face?”

“That’s my line,” Jisung tries to laugh but his features stay crumpled, stricken with agony. “You’re thinking about that time too, aren’t you?”

You press your lips into a straight line, trying not to mirror his expression. Yet it shatters when he speaks again, “That time when you killed me.”

“Yeah, I’m sorry.” Something like guilts settles into your smile—fuck, you can’t cry. It would be absurd if you did because you didn’t even cry when you ended his life. How are you going to cry now when he is right beside you, holding your hand so tenderly?

“Sorry for killing you.”

With a shudder, he shakes his head and pulls away. His hands unravel the scarf around his neck to put it over yours instead, each movement careful and attentive.

“I’m sorry, too.” Jisung can finally laugh like he’s been freed from a chokehold. He opens his arms, crashing himself against you to breathe in the taste of the sky one last time.

“Sorry for loving you so much.”

You return the hug, arms coming empty.

❖ note (again) : an explanation for those who are confused; jisung died in winter. another thing is that he’s weirdly attached to his scarf because that is what he used to kill himself. so if you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading!

Currently Obsessing Over, Debrief no.1: Rokh (Yes, Inspired by THAT Anya Taylor-Joy LNiS Press Tour Look)

-new post series where I share the highlights of a newly discovered designer’s collections and yes, I’m behind sometimes, I know-

-Ready to Wear Spring/Summer 2021: As soon as I checked out Rokh’s collections on Vogue runway and saw THIS masterpiece of a collection, I knew I was about to go all Joe Goldberg over newcomer Rok Hwang’s work. It’s got all the elements I love from some of my absolute faves like Brock and Vera Wang, the whimsical, puritan style bases offset by punk touches that scream Thomasin from The VVitch if she time travelled and became part of a ‘90s riot grrrl punk rock band (in my mind, I’m gonna assume this is what drew Anya Taylor-Joy to the brand). There seems to be a Gucci RTW F/W20 influence too which is a good indicator of style inspo convergence with Rokh and thus a long, one-sided hero-worship based relationship between us on my part, because that was one of Alessandro Michele’s best and arguably the GOAT when it comes to the collections I’ve reviewed since starting this blog. Disclaimer: this series will in general be a photoset only one though I do think it makes sense to start with where the-metaphorical-love affair between a designer and I began. A little Guinevere Beck walks into a “meta-progression of Dan Humphrey”’s bookstore and this is why 3 seasons later about 20 people have been murdered equivalent for your consideration.-

Wow, that's a lot of asks! I thought I'd just answer them separately, but as you can see a lot of them overlap, so I decided to put everything together under a cut haha

1. Favorite fictional characters this year.

I’m locking the door, we’re not leaving until 2024.

No but seriously oh my, there were so many! For the sake of shortening the list a little bit, I’ll choose 5 characters I’ve met this year, but I could spend hours naming all of them haha To illustrate, Jolyne Cujoh won’t make the cut despite batches 2 & 3 coming out this year, because batch 1 came out last year and she’s not a new character for me.

In no particular order:

1. Pochita from Chainsaw Man

2. Suzuya Juuzou from Tokyo Ghoul

3. Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100

4. Anya Forger from Spy x Family

5. Okkotsu Yuta from Jujutsu Kaisen 0

2. Favorite ships this year

For this one I wanted to pick new ships as well, but if we’re being honest my year was dominated by one particular ship and it was fyolai. What’s funny is that I was more neutral towards at in 2021, I liked it, but I wouldn’t call it my favourite ship, and then I was doing my twilight meme saga and something in my brain just switched, I got an idea, thought haha just kidding…. unless?, and haven’t been the same ever since. The frenzy I was in throught the spring is indescribable and I literally did this to myself. Fyolai is the first thing I think about when I wake up and the last thing on my mind when I go to sleep. Someone send help...

3. Favorite TV shows to watch this year

My 2022 definitely belonged to Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure. Part 3 was fantastic and part 6 was everything I imagined it to be. I originally started watching Jojo for the sake of having context for part 6 and I didn't even expect myself to get so into this world, I'd pick up the manga. What a bizzare advnture indeed!

There was also the 2nd season of Vanitas no Carte which I'm a manga reader of, so I knew what was going to happen. But still, seeing it animated was amazing. The only issue I had was that some aspects could've been done a bit better and the vibe seemed a bit of compared to how the story was presented in the manga. Maybe that's because of the differences between the used medium or Bones having to make so changes for the anime to work better, but reading the chapters felt more serious. But animated Naenia is still one of my favourite fantasy horror creatures and I want more of her.

Then there’s Stranger Things season 4 with which I have a complicated relantionship. I loved the first volume and I wish it hadn’t been cancelled in the middle of the season, that’s so unfair! (for context: the 2nd volume was of course released as planned but I despise the last two episodes of that season with passion and would rather pretend that the show was cancelled than accept them)

Of course I have to mention Chainsaw Man (which will appear again on this list haha), because I'm a huge fan of the way Mappa animated it. First of all, seeing chcracters animated gave them so much life and let each character stand out on their own. The decision to do a new ending each episode was also brilliant and each weak I was waiting to see how the new ending would look. Finally, the soundtrack was absolutely perfect, both the songs and the OST.

Lastly, the end of the year brought a lot of joy with Mob Psycho 100 making a comeback. I finally watched it and yes, it deserves ALL the hype it gets. I wanted to watch it for a long time and was waiting for the 3rd season to end to binge it, and it was a wild experience. This show is just so wholesome, it even made me care about episodic characters (not Dimple though, I don't like him, I'm sorry Dimple Stans) and I'd happily watch season 4 if it existed haha

4. Favorite books read this year

Definitely Dracula! Dracula Daily is the best initiative I’ve seen in a really long time (maybe ever) and I’m incredibly grateful I got to read it this way. And the fact that it was so synchronized with 2022 was fate. I wished for my 2022 to be vampiric and homoerotic and that came true in the most unexpected ways.

5. Favorite song, album, or artist to listen to this year

*cracks knuckles*

Okay no no no, I will be concise, I promise.

For the song, I don’t really have one favourite, because it’s way too hard to just choose one haha And yeah I picked first death, but it's not a definitive number one just one of my favourites and a song I felt desrves more hype, because it's excellent.

The reason why I picked it is because it’s beautifully different from anything I’ve ever heard and I’m so fascinated by the layers in this song. There’s just so much going on in the instrumental and because it’s really fast-paced I had to listen to it a few times before I even caught all the elements. Of course I have to mentions the vocals as well, because they’re perfectly utalized. In a way I feel like they’re more of an intrumental than the instrumental? Idk if it makes sense, but I feel like we’re meant to listen to this loud and very present intrumental and so the singing is a bit drowned out by it? It’s like the vocals and the instrumental are one in this song. And there’s also a lot going of with the vocals as well, switching from whispers to screams, lower voice to higher voice, it simply sounds wonderful in this song. I also find the usage of chainsaw noises an amazing easter egg, because this song was made as the 8th ending of Chainsaw Man.

Similarly Chainsaw Blood by Vaundy also utalizes this sound and is one of my favourite songs of 2022 as well. I didn’t expect the soundtrack of csm to give me 2 of my favourite songs of the year, but it was a very pleasant surprise. And as much as film credits fit the first episode, it’s such a shame that this song didn’t get to be an actual cinematic ending like the rest, because for me it perfectly encapsulates the vibe of this story.

Now, when it comes to other new releases I’d definitely put:

Love Dive by Ive - this is like THE song of the year and it deserves every bit of hype it gets, it's stunning in every aspect. I've heard it so many times and I'm still exicted each time I hear it play

Cheshire by Itzy - it's so underrated! It's one of my favourite Itzy title-tracks and it didn't even get much promotion compared to Sneakers (which was an objectively weaker song. I have a lot to say about the way JYP has been messing up when it comes to Itzy promotion, but the fact that this song was a part of a 4-track mini-album instead of a hugely promoted full album hurts my soul

Talk that Talk by Twice - to me it felt like The Feels pt. 2 and as a well-known The Feels enjoyer I couldn't be happier. I really like that Twice is now doing more mature concepts and keeping their youthfullness at the same time. It's not an easy task, but they're doing amazing

Limbo! by Nature - if you want to check this particular song out make sure you watch this dance practice video, because it’s so hilariously silly, I’m in love with this choreography. I love it when k-pop groups do "silly" concepts

Lightning by Charli XCX - I will go back to Charli in a second, but I just wanted to highlight this song

Shinigami Eyes by Grimes - at first I wasn't sure about this track, but it grew on me over the year and I find this new era of Grimes really fascinating. Just give us more music!!

Pop! by Nayeon - a perfect way to end this list and one of the song I didn't expect to even come out, because I had no idea Nayeon was having a solo debut. One day this song just materialized for me and I fell in love right away

The case with albums is a bit different, because there weren’t many new releases I’d be really into, so I spent the majority of time listening to older releases and making my discoveries there.

One of the exceptions was The Gods We Can Touch by Aurora which is a phenomenal album, literally one of the best I’ve ever heard, and funnily enough, it was released in January 2022. It raised the bar so high haha

Another album from last year I especially enjoyed was The God’s Machine by Blind Guardian, which was their first album under this name in like 7 years and it was everything I wished for (but please, guys, don’t make me wait another 7 years next time haha).

And lastly there was Crash by Charli XCX and I was so surprised by this album, because for the past few years she’s kinda been the face of hyperpop and so I didn’t expect her to go back to her pop roots. The effect was fabulous and now it’s probably my favourite of all her projects.

Now onto the artists! Once again there were so so many. Taylor Swift had an album (which was great btw just not my favourite of hers), I discovered Queens of the Stone Age thanks to my dear jojosis, Grimes made me hope for the Fairies EP for the entire year (I’m literally begging for Book 1, c’mon now I need this album), it was so fun.

It was also an interesting year, because it turned out that Siouxsie and the Banshees is actually that awesome band I didn’t know the name of, which led to me saying well I might as well give The Cure a second chance, right? and becoming obsessed with them. I connected the dots. I connected them!

7. Favorite TV show episodes of the year

I’m glad you picked this question, because it’s so unusual to just pick specific episodes. To maybe list a few chronologically as I watched them:

s4e1 (Chapter One: The Hellfire Club) and s4e4 (Chapter Four: Dear Billy) of Stranger Things were both amazing episodes. E1 started the show with a bang and showed us that ST has amazing potential and can balance wholesome moments with horror elements really well while also being incredibly aesthetically pleasing. E4 has a phenomenal storyline, the stakes were crazy, and the Running up that Hill scene was possibly the most cinematic moment of the show.

s5e13 (Kiss of Love and Revenge (1)) and s5e14 (Kiss of Love and Revenge (2)) of Stone Ocean were hugely an Ermes arc and this was exactly what I needed for her character. They were also done absoltely beautifully and the scene with Gloria’s soul was one of the best moments of the whole show. s5e27 (Sky High) was also an amazing episode and the worldbuilding was hilarious, because what do you mean Rikiel can see some weird rods?? I had so much fun watching it and trying to figure out what was supposed to be scientifically realistic and what was simply bonkers. To be honest this whole season was wonderful, it’s just that there 3 episodes stood out the most to me.

s2e1 (Ripped Apart ~Someone Is Watching~) of Mob Psycho 100 was the best opening for the season this show could have and the scene in which Mob helps Emi put back together her book is one of my favourite scenes of the whole show, because Mob used his ability to help someone instead of using it for fighting purposes. Personally I really like slice-of-life stories that incorporate supernatural elements in the daily lives of characters. For the same reason s3e7 (Transmission 1 ~Winter Break~) and s3e8 (Transmission 2 ~Encountering the Unknown~) were also my favourite episodes, because it was like a break from all the action. I wanted to have a full episode dedicated to the Telepathy Club and these 2 gave me exactly that.

s2e16 (Hollow Mind) of The Owl House is another episode I want to highlight. The whole show is excellent, but I chose this particular episode, because it’s so dark and nice. Belos is one of my favourite villains of all time and this episode really shows why.

8. First fandom of the year

I had to think about this for a moment, but I’m pretty sure Spy x Family was my first new fandom of the year. So far it’s been a great experience though if I’m being honest I didn’t expect it to become this big. I knew it’d be popular, but THIS popular?? 11. Biggest squee moments of the year (For ye youths who no longer use such awesome terminology, that means the fandom moments that made your heart cry out in overwhelming joy. Can y’all believe that “squee” didn’t quite stand the test of time??)

Tumblr Sexyman Contest! Seeing people come together to celebrate a Twitter contest through fan art and memes was a really beautiful moment. And Toby Fox wrote a fic! Like, are you kidding me?? Literal creator of Undertale writing a fic about a sexyman contest?? That was so cool. I was lucky enough to get interested in this subject before it ended, so I could watch the chaos unfold in real time and it was one of the wildest fandom experiences in my life. Oh, I have to mention for those who don’t know – hours after Sans was crowned the winner, Queen Elizabeth died and people RAN with the idea to incorporate her death into the contest. Yeah, things really got WILD.

Idk if that counts as crying out in overwhelming joy, but when chapter 101 of bsd was released I just happened to be at home and the noise I made upon seeing the drowning come true as a prophesized was hilarious. Like yeah I know that 2 lives are in danger, but I was so happy to be right. I can't wait for another jail break arc chapter and let me remind you I also said that Chuuya will survive and that in this universe vampires can't drown because they don't breathe. Oh, and also the newest omake also made me squeek in joy. Higuchi my beloved.

I also have to mention Stranger Things once again, because I was so happy when I was watching the first episode. It had been a long time since the previous season, so seeing these characters again was really nostalgic. And with this season taking a more horror-oriented route than the previous one, I was also squeeking with joy upon those clocks and everything. Like poor Chrissy, but I was having so much fun sjdhchcjsk

14. Favorite m/f ship of the year

It has to be jonmina (Mina and Jonathan Harker), it simply has to. Jonathan mentioning her in his shorthand all the time, Mina travelling through Europe to see him and marry him in a hospital, Jonathan willing to become a vampire to stay with her, they really deserve the title of my favourite m/f ship of the year. The bar is now astronomically high.

18. Fandom that you never expected to get into

To be honest I’m such a choatic person, anything can happen, and I fully know it. It’s like expect the unexpected, you know? But with that being said, I would never imagine myself getting this into Chainsaw Man. The reason I started reading it in the first place was because I saw that it was finished, and if I was waiting for the anime, I could as well read it to kill time, right? Well, no one told me part 2 would be coming out in summer! I had to learn through youtube showing me a headless chicken animation recommendation for me to be like wait what I don’t remember this chapter?? and the rest was history. No but really, part 2 is so good so far. It fixed most of the issues I had with part 1 (which was great, don’t get me wrong, it’s just that there were issues which aren't present anymore so part 2 is even better) and I can’t wait to read more. Also the anime was finally released and I feel like watching it with sound and movement definitely helps the story.

23. The most missed of your old fandoms

I really miss interacting with the Taemin branch of the Shinee fandom. It’s not gone or anything it’s just that now Taemin has to complete his compulsory enlistment, so there’s nothing going on. Other members have solo activities, but because Taemin is doing his enlistment, group activities are on a hiatus and I have to wait for him to be back to get new content and new music. I’ll wait patiently as long as it takes, but I still miss his comebacks and seeing Shawols come together to celebrate them. But let's not end on a negative note, because we still get cat updates and Kkoong is an adorable little kitty!
