How Mazda Rode Out the Pandemic While Rivals Slipped The pandemic crushed new-vehicle sales last year in the United States, with behemoths like Ford Motor, General Motors and Honda all posting double-digit sales declines. Altogether, the sales slide reached 15 percent, with under 14.5 million new cars hitting American roads, down from a five-year average of around 17 million. But Mazda â the 13th-ranked carmaker in America â was one of just three to increase sales last year. (Tesla and Volvo were the others.) The critical accolades piled up, as well. U.S. News and World Report, for the fifth year, made Mazda its Best Car Brand. Every one of its new models that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested was a Top Safety Pick, more than any other brand. It ranked No. 1 in a Consumer Reports survey on the most reliable new vehicles. And then this year, Mazda received the top spot in that magazineâs coveted Brand Report Card, based on a combined score that measures âroad-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction and safety.â âDuring the pandemic, a number of brands were able to take some advantage of getting people to take a look at them,â said Alexander Edwards, president of Strategic Vision, an automotive research and consulting firm. âMazda has had a little bit of an easier time succeeding because, with just 2 percent of the market, they havenât had a lot to lose.â Mr. Edwards, whose firm conducts hundreds of thousands of in-depth surveys with new car buyers each year, attributed part of Mazdaâs appeal during this atypical period to consumer perceptions held by its typical buyers. Just as car shoppers are attracted to Jeeps for the perception of go-anywhere ability, and to BMWs for the idea of being able to drive at top speed on the autobahn â even if these things never actually happen to an ordinary owner â consumers were attracted to Mazda during the pandemic because the brand offered them a fantasy of carefree relief. âMazda owners tend to be younger, single college graduates. They have an income thatâs slightly higher than the general population, and theyâre less likely to have kids. They enjoy fine dining. They travel the world,â he said. âSo everything that we werenât able to do this year, this is what Mazda owners love to do. Thatâs part of the brand imagery.â And driving was the next-best thing. âMazdas have this image of being an escape,â Mr. Edwards added. In addition, though it has a cadre of loyalists, Mazda relies heavily on âconquestâ sales â luring consumers from other brands â to fuel sales growth. During the pandemic, as potential car buyers navigated closed dealerships, dived deeper into online reviews and embraced at-home test drives, the small Japanese marque made its move. âWith all of the rules being rewritten, they were able to pick up additional people that were reconsidering what vehicles they were going to consider,â Mr. Edwards said. For years, Mazda sported best-in-class fuel economy across its entire range, but it may be best known for its zippy $26,830 MX-5 Miata roadster. The Miata, one of the few affordable two-seat sports cars still on the market, is an industry benchmark for the cost/fun-to-drive ratio. The $20,650 Mazda 3 compact sedan and hatchback won the 2020 World Car Design of the Year award, for bringing Italianate styling, and driving passion, to a dwindling category; even Volkswagen has quit selling its Golf hatchback, long a core competitor, in the United States. The $24,475 Mazda 6 is a handsome family sedan that competes fiercely with the Honda Accord, even though the Honda sells a dozen Accords for every Mazda 6. It is, however, being discontinued after the 2021 model year, another victim of the shift to S.U.V.s and crossovers. Mazda competes in that bracket, as well. Its top seller in the States, the $25,370 CX-5, is a rival to the best-selling Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 and occasionally even competes with luxury models like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Today in Business Updated May 26, 2021, 4:06 p.m. ET âWhen I worked at another auto company, the engineers were taught that value was performance divided by cost,â said Jeff Guyton, president and chief executive of Mazdaâs North American operations. âThe first day that a Mazda engineer comes to work, he or she is taught that value is performance divided by weight. âThatâs a totally different mind-set,â he continued. âAnd we do that because weight is the enemy of cost. But itâs also the enemy of fun-to-drive, and itâs also the enemy of fuel economy. So if we judge value as performance divided by weight, we should be able to tackle all of those things.â Mazdaâs unique perspective has deep roots. The company, which was founded as a cork-maker in 1920 in Hiroshima, has always been something of an outlier. âHistorically, Mazda has been pretty small, pretty independent, and geographically theyâre not located in the heart of Japan, where most of the big car companies are, so I think that has also afforded them a bit of that independent thinking,â said Dave Yuan, senior editor of Japanese Nostalgic Car, a website for American fans of Japanese cars. âTheir very first vehicle was a racing motorcycle, to challenge the dominance of the big British bike brands.â Mr. Yuan credits Mazdaâs focus on âcourageousâ engineering for its distinct perspective. âThey tend not to be bound by a lot of the industry conventions,â he said. âTheyâre always going to try and seek out things that they believe are the right technology.â This includes, most famously, early and current efforts to tame and maximize the Wankel rotary engine, a high-revving, compact engine with a potent power-to-weight ratio â and inherent difficulties with fuel efficiency, oil consumption and tailpipe emissions. Mazda engineers are working on using the rotary as an onboard generator for their first electric car, the MX-30, where low-stress running conditions would allow it to operate quietly and efficiently. This spirit also encompasses Mazdaâs dedication to what Mr. Yuan calls âsignature philosophies,â such as âwhat makes a car drive well, and what makes a car enjoyable to drive.â Many resulting adaptations â the placement of gas, brake and clutch pedals; the position of seat backs; the way an engine builds power under a hard turn â donât show up on spec sheets. But in day-to-day driving, they imbue Mazdas with a sense of refinement and delight. âThey really feel like a boutique, artisanal, intricately thought-out product,â Mr. Yuan said. Yet, emerging from the pandemic, small automotive brands like Mazda face significant challenges. The key trends for the future are electrification and advanced driver-assistance technology, two categories that require immense investment. Mazda just doesnât have this kind of capital, or scale. So one strategy involves a partnership with Toyota, the worldâs top-selling automaker. In this deal, Mazda gains access to what Mr. Guyton called âToyotaâs wealth of resources and technology.â But when asked what Toyota acquires, he became a bit more philosophical. âI think the Toyota organization looked at Mazda and said: âHey, you guys are consistently competitive in all these big segments all over the world, and yet you have a tenth of the resources we have. If we could have just a little of that in our organization, think what we could do with all the resources we do have.â The two brands are building a factory in Alabama, a plant that may â along with existing factories from Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai â help that low-wage, nonunion state become the second-largest auto producer in North America, after Michigan. According to Mr. Guyton, the cars built there will not be âtwins separated at birthâ â nearly identical vehicles with different badges on the front. Le nouveau Nissan Rogue entiÚrement redessiné et de petits conseils pour des excursions hors-route

Le populaire petit VUS Rogue de Nissan nous est dâabord apparu en 2008. MalgrĂ© que ce fut une certaine rĂ©ussite pour le constructeur japonais, avec le temps, il aura essuyĂ© des critiques nĂ©gatives surtout pour son look un peu trop «dĂ©licat» (ici, je ne mâaventure pas dans la cause des boĂźtes automatiques CVT). Non pas quâil Ă©tait laid mais son allure bulbeuse sans traits vraiment dĂ©finis aura attirĂ© plus de clients fĂ©minins que lâaurait voulu le constructeur. Lorsque jâai assistĂ© au lancement mĂ©diatique canadien de la deuxiĂšme gĂ©nĂ©ration, celle de 2013, les reprĂ©sentants de Nissan Ă©taient fiers de dire quâenfin, le Rogue affichait un look plus «viril» voulant dire, bien sĂ»r, plus robuste. Ainsi, le Rogue se dĂ©tachait de son image de «char de femme», un terme un peu trop sexiste qui ne passerait plus aujourdâhui, nâest-ce pas?
Mais, lĂ encore, le Rogue de deuxiĂšme gĂ©nĂ©ration conservait un peu de cette forme bulbeuse. Heureusement, la troisiĂšme gĂ©nĂ©ration de Rogue, celle qui est en vedette dans ce reportage, entreprend une nouvelle carriĂšre avec des lignes nettement plus angulaires lui permettant ainsi de se mesurer Ă une concurrence trĂšs vive oĂč les vĂ©hicules se veulent plus sportifs ou encore plus robustes, un peu comme le Bronco Sport de la semaine derniĂšre, sans oublier les Toyota RAV4. Honda CR-V et Volkswagen Tiguan. On y voit trĂšs bien ce genre trĂšs «VUS»!  Cette fois, Ă mes yeux, câest une rĂ©ussite mĂȘme si certains observateurs mâont fait part de leur inquiĂ©tude quant Ă lâavant qui semble composĂ© de plusieurs Ă©lĂ©ments. Ce design supportera-t-il les ravages du temps?

Comme dâhabitude, je vous laisse juger de vous-mĂȘmes. Câest une question de goĂ»t, nâest-ce pas? Eh bien, il en va de mĂȘme pour lâintĂ©rieur. Quoiquâil soit inspirĂ© des berlines de la marque, le tableau de bord de ce Rogue lui sied bien. Son design Ă deux niveaux avec un bloc dâinstrumentation («vidĂ©o», unique Ă la version Platinum mais facile Ă lire) bien placĂ© devant le conducteur retient bien lâĂ©cran central de neuf pouces qui en semble dĂ©tachĂ©. En passant, mon Rogue dâessai Ă©tait Ă©quipĂ© de la projection de la vitesse Ă lâintĂ©rieur du pare-brise, un touche de sĂ©curitĂ© que jâapprĂ©cie particuliĂšrement.  Mais le tout fait un peu plus «camionnette», le dessin intĂ©rieur se mariant bien avec celui de la carrosserie. On retrouve une sorte de levier de vitesse au centre de la console mais mĂ©fiez-vous, il sâagit plutĂŽt dâun levier Ă commandes Ă©lectriques pour la boĂźte CVT avec un bouton sur la poignĂ©e pour la position Park (notez quâil y a des palettes au volant pour «jouer» avec la boĂźte de vitesses, mĂȘme si câest une CVT). Le frein de stationnement Ă©lectrique est activĂ© par un commutateur Ă cette console oĂč lâon retrouve aussi une commande rotative pour le choix de motricitĂ© sur terrains moins hospitaliers. Oui, le nouveau Rogue est Ă traction intĂ©grale et il est possible de sâaventurer dans des sentiers modestes alors que la commande permet aussi aux aides Ă la conduite (surtout lâantipatinage) de circuler dans la neige, dans le sable et autre. Câest plus Ă©lectronique que mĂ©canique!

Le design et la confection des siĂšges baquet dâavant de la version Platinum qui me fut confiĂ©e par Nissan Canada affichaient un style agrĂ©able Ă lâĆil tout autant que les garnitures de portiĂšre. Ăvidemment les baquets dâavant Ă©taient chauffants tout comme les places dâarriĂšre (extĂ©rieures). Incidemment, jâai trouvĂ© quâil y avait quand mĂȘme suffisamment dâespace pour des passagers de gabarit rĂ©gulier Ă lâarriĂšre. Quant au coffre, il est aussi grand que celui des vĂ©hicules de la concurrence et il peut sâagrandir, comme câen est le cas pour la concurrence, en abaissant le dossier des siĂšges du centre du vĂ©hicule (le Rogue nâest pas disponible en version Ă sept passagers). Il y a mĂȘme un systĂšme de partition dans le plancher de ce coffre. Celui-ci est donc trĂšs utile (mĂȘme sâil est un peu plus petit, mais Ă peine, que celui de la version 2020).  Cet espace de chargement est un des attraits principaux de ce type de vĂ©hicule.

Toutefois, si la carrosserie et lâintĂ©rieur du Rogue sont tout nouveaux, ce que lâon peut voir sous le capot ne lâest pas nĂ©cessairement. Le seul moteur disponible demeure un quatre cylindres de 2,5 litres Ă injection directe (mais pas turbocompressĂ©) qui fait 181 chevaux et 181 li-pi de couple (il faisait 170 chevaux et 175 li-pi de couple en 2020). Il ne vient quâavec une boĂźte automatique Ă variation continue qui, malgrĂ© le fait quâelle fut sur marchĂ© depuis plusieurs annĂ©es, ne fait pas lâunanimitĂ© auprĂšs de ses utilisateurs. Ne pas mentionner que la CVT nâa pas eu une belle rĂ©putation dans le passĂ© nâaurait pas Ă©tĂ© honnĂȘte. Toutefois, le constructeur nous affirme que le problĂšme a Ă©tĂ© rĂ©glĂ© depuis longtemps. Il faut dire que plusieurs automobilistes ne sont pas familiers avec ce type de boĂźte de vitesses qui ne «passe» pas les rapports comme les boĂźtes plus traditionnelles. Câest une question de perception. Quelques autres constructeurs ont aussi choisi ce type de «transmission» et on entend moins parler de revendications mĂȘme si certaines causes sont devenues des recours collectifs aux Ătats-Unis. Toutefois, dans la majoritĂ© des cas, le Rogue nây est pas impliquĂ©, du moins selon mes recherches. Bien entendu, le modĂšle Platinum dont il est question ici Ă©tait Ă traction intĂ©grale alors que les versions de base sont aussi disponibles avec la traction avant seulement. Nissan a Ă©galement revu la plateforme et les Ă©lĂ©ments de suspension de son vĂ©hicule le plus populaire pour une meilleure impression de conduite. Les pneus dâorigine de mon Rogue Platinum dâessai Ă©taient de confortables Dunlop Grandtrek PT 21.

Sur la route
Aussi bien le dire tout de suite, le Nissan Rogue nâest pas une voiture de sport! Ses accĂ©lĂ©rations de 0 Ă 100 km/h peuvent demander jusquâĂ neuf secondes et il est difficile de sâhabituer au son aigu du moteur qui monte plus vite en rĂ©gime que les accĂ©lĂ©rations peuvent paraĂźtre. Les reprises peuvent ĂȘtre aussi pĂ©nibles alors, le conducteur doit utiliser une autre mĂ©thode pour dĂ©passer soit dây aller plus graduellement ou en utilisant les palettes au volant. Jâai plus apprĂ©ciĂ© le Rogue en le conduisant ainsi. La direction et le freinage sont satisfaisants malgrĂ© un peu trop dâassistance.
Toutefois, sur lâautoroute, ce petit VUS de Nissan Ă©tait trĂšs Ă lâaise et relativement silencieux. Jâai bien aimĂ© le fait que lâon pouvait trĂšs bien voir tout le tour ce qui rend la conduite urbaine (et le stationnement) plus facile. Et sur une longue distance, les siĂšges demeurent confortables. Lorsque le rĂ©gulateur de vitesse est utilisĂ©, le systĂšme ProPILOT joue un peu le rĂŽle dâautopilote. Mais, vous vous doutez que je ne suis pas trĂšs Ă lâaise dans cette situation. Jâaime conduire et rester le maĂźtre du volant!
En ce qui a trait Ă la consommation, lâordinateur de bord indiquait, au bout de la semaine dâessai, une moyenne de 8,8 l./100 km. Je nâai pu Ă©tablir mes propres calculs car, curieusement, juste avant de remettre mon vĂ©hicule dâessai, je lâai ravitaillĂ© et en reprenant le volant, lâordinateur sâĂ©tait rĂ©initialisĂ©! Jâaurais dĂ» prendre la lecture de lâodomĂštre avant de ravitailler! Au moins, notons que le Rogue fonctionne trĂšs bien avec de lâessence rĂ©guliĂšre!
Enfin, sachez que le Rogue de base (à traction avant) affiche un prix de départ de 28 498 $ alors que la SV débute à 31 998 $. Une version Platinum (obligatoirement à traction intégrale) telle que décrite dans ce reportage débute, elle, à 39 998 $.
Nissan est dĂ©cidemment dans la bonne voie pour rĂ©pondre Ă la demande des automobilistes friands de VUS abordables avec son Rogue. Le design est trĂšs bien rĂ©ussi, lâintĂ©rieur est accueillant mais il faudrait lĂ©gĂšrement plus de puissance au moteur. Quant Ă la fiabilitĂ© de la boĂźte CVT, jâose espĂ©rer que tout a Ă©tĂ© rĂ©glĂ© puisque dâautres constructeurs lâont aussi adoptĂ©e. Le Rogue est une rĂ©ussite pour Nissan. Il ne reste plus quâĂ conserver ce juste titre!
Faire du off-road?
Suite Ă lâarticle sur le petit Bronco Sport, certains lecteurs mâont demandĂ© sâil Ă©tait vraiment possible de faire du «off-road» sur des sentiers sans endommager leur vĂ©hicule, peu importe la marque. Câest vous dire quelle impression cette camionnette laisse.

En fait, jâĂ©tais moi-mĂȘme Ă la recherche de groupes qui organisaient des excursions hors-route au QuĂ©bec comme on peut en voir dans certains magazines amĂ©ricains, de vĂ©ritables excursions qui peuvent prendre jusquâĂ deux ou trois jours mais qui nâexigent pas nĂ©cessairement dâĂ©quiper son vĂ©hicule Ă lâextrĂȘme sauf pour de petits ajouts peu coĂ»teux mais vraiment opĂ©rationnels comme des pneus plus agressifs, des phares de nuit, un treuil ou mĂȘme une petite remorque bien adaptĂ©e aux excursions hors-route. Le Bronco Sport, les Jeep Cherokee et Compass Trailhawk et autres VUS du genre devraient correspondre Ă cet appel!
Jâai rĂ©ussi Ă rejoindre Jean-François CĂŽtĂ©, un adepte de telles excursions qui a vraiment pris tout son temps pour vraiment me mettre au courant des activitĂ©s de ce genre. Jean-François est membre du club TORQ (Toyota Off Road QuĂ©bec) qui organise de telles excursions (sans obliger ses membres Ă possĂ©der un produit Toyota, en passant). Il fait aussi partie de la FĂ©dĂ©ration des Clubs  4 x 4 du QuĂ©bec, un organisme officiel qui est facile Ă consulter sur Internet. Le but premier de ces clubs est dâaider les amateurs de conduite hors-route Ă pratiquer leur activitĂ© prĂ©fĂ©rĂ©e en toute sĂ©curitĂ© et surtout en toute lĂ©galitĂ©.
Mais avant dâaller aussi loin, Jean-François conseille aux dĂ©butants de consulter les sites de ces clubs et dâessayer de dĂ©couvrir les programmes dâune seule journĂ©e oĂč les «pilotes» chevronnĂ©s donnent des cours visant Ă dĂ©couvrir les capacitĂ©s de votre vĂ©hicule. Qui sait? Peut-ĂȘtre un jour deviendrez-vous un vĂ©ritable passionnĂ© de Jeep et dâexcursions du type Overland ou Trail Camping?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 is a lot like that one friend everyone seems to have: always there to lend a hand, provide a shoulder to cry on or show up at a momentâs notice if you find yourself in hot water at 2:00 a.m. in Tijuana. No, the RAV4 doesnât really lead the compact SUV class in any one area, but itâs well rounded, perfectly capable and ready to serve.

Offering drivers plenty of choice, three basic flavors of RAV4 are available. Thereâs the standard model, an economical hybrid and then the RAV4 Prime, the plug-in hybrid variant with up to 42 miles of electric-only range. The example seen here is the most rugged of the bunch, the TRD Off-Road, which features a non-hybrid drivetrain and some additional features to make it perform better out on the trail.
For 2021, the TRD Off-Road model gains a swanky stainless-steel front skid plate, a first for the RAV4. This should help shield some of its delicates while thrashing around in the dirt. This Toyotaâs body is supported by a uniquely tuned suspension, which features racy-looking red springs that supposedly provide better small-bump isolation on rough roads. This vehicle also boasts re-valved twin-tube shock absorbers for better body control over large surface irregularities. Providing and extra helping of traction is a set of Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail all-terrain tires mounted to 18-inch TRD wheels. These rubbers look super aggressive but are surprisingly agreeable. Indeed, the TRD Off-Roadâs suspension tuning is totally livable, providing an impressively smooth on-pavement ride with little tire noise. If towing is your thing, this RAV4 can drag up to 3,500 pounds, enough for a couple snowmobiles or a small trailer.
My tester is also fitted with what have to be the most useless running boards in automotive history. The RAV4 sits low enough that theyâre completely unnecessary. Making matters worse, these things are sure to get in the way while off-roading, plus they stick out far enough to streak your pant legs with whatever slop you last drove through. But hereâs the kicker: All this added inconvenience costs an extra $549.
Get past those optional running boards and youâll find this SUVâs interior is well built and the overall design is easy on the eyes, without any frou-frou add-ons or unnecessary sculpting. Mazdaâs CX-5 is clearly more upscale and the Honda CR-Vâs cabin is nicer, too, but thereâs no shortage of soft materials in this Toyota and I love the racy-looking red stitching that runs across the dashboard, door panels and seats. As in other Toyotas, the RAV4âs back-up camera is poor, providing a low-resolution image of whatâs behind you. The $1,950 TRD Off-Road Technology Package includes a 360-degree camera system, which is helpful, but just as gritty looking. This options group contains other goodies, too, like a digital rear-view mirror, parking sensors, a wireless charging plate and more, so it is worth the extra outlay even if the camera system is merely so-so.
The RAV4âs front chairs are supportive and comfortable, helping provide a good view of the road ahead. This SUVâs backseat is also spacious, with plenty of room for knees and noggins, though the rear cushion is just a tad too low for it to be totally accommodating. Also, the back door openings are narrow, so it can be challenging to access the rear accommodations.
This Toyotaâs four-cylinder engine works surprisingly well, even if itâs a bit noisy while working.

Really, I have no complaints about this SUVâs get-up-and-go, rather, Iâm not a huge fan of its refinement. The engine is gruff sounding when on the boil and sometimes you feel uncouth vibrations.
But hey, at least the RAV4 is efficient. TRD Off-Road models come with torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, a feature that should make them reasonably capable little mountain goats. Despite the added weight and friction of four-corner traction, this SUV is rated at 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. In mixed (though mostly highway) driving, Iâm averaging about 31.5 mpg, which is, frankly, stellar for a vehicle this tall fitted with such aggressive tires.Â

At interstate speeds a bit of wind noise makes its presence known, but this is hardly objectionable. The RAV4âs ride is mostly supple and the brake pedal feels good beneath your tootsies. This vehicleâs steering is crisp and quick, but a tad too light for my taste and the wheelâs rim is almost dainty its cross-section is so small.
Helping keep the RAV4 shiny side up, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard fare on every 2021 model. This suite of driver aids includes lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition and more. The headline features, though, are adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
