Maybe this car, and a few others from Volkswagen, are the velcro strip needed to get American consumers interested in and clinging to electric vehicles. This “Mustang” could cost a consumer, after the tax credit, to less than $40,000, a competitive price. With a driving range of 250 miles on a full charge, I think this car is looking good to the average car buyer. All very good for the climate!
Excerpt form this New York Times story:
The company is betting that the car will succeed where others have failed in part because, while it is called a Mustang, it is a roomy and high-riding S.U.V., which many American car buyers prefer over sedans. Most of Tesla’s sales come from its Model 3 compact sedan. Other automakers, including Volkswagen, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Hyundai, are also planning to introduce electric S.U.V.s in the coming months.
Several of the new entries are also priced attractively compared with Tesla models, and could lure buyers who are interested in electric vehicles but have balked at paying premiums prices.
The Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4, which is due in dealerships in March, go about 250 miles on a full charge — about the same as the cheapest version of Tesla’s Model Y — and start at about $43,000 and $40,000. The base Model Y starts at about $42,000, but the Ford and Volkswagen models are eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit that will lower the final cost to well under $40,000, or close to the average price of new cars sold in the United States. The tax credit no longer applies to purchases of Teslas.
Start-up automakers will also put new cars on the road this year. Rivian, which is backed by Amazon and Ford, plans to start selling a luxury S.U.V. and a luxury pickup truck this summer. They are priced at about $75,000, but are intended for off-road use — an ability that Tesla hasn’t focused on, although the company aims to begin producing a pickup truck later in the year.
Electric vehicles make up only about 3 percent of global auto sales, but are expected to rise rapidly over the next decade. Electrics could outsell gasoline-powered vehicles globally by 2040, some analysts think. As a result, many automakers are spending billions of dollars to introduce dozens of electric models over the next several years.

Kia Niro EV Review 2021 for Earth Day 2021 (Mach-E owners)
Mach-E VLOG
In March, we switched to an electric car, the Ford Mustang Mach-E. We are already hooked on the "EV life" and to celebrate Earth Day 2021, we reflect on what that change means. We also talk about some of the great options that are out there besides the Mustang Mach-E. There is the VW ID.4, Tesla Model Y, Polestar 2, and others. We even attended a Drive Electric Earth Day event at a Kia dealer to look at their Kia Niro EV. We met some of the organizers from Drive Electric Colorado and took the Kia Niro EV for a test drive.

Ford Motor Company today announced that Jim Hackett, who has led the company’s transformation since 2017, plans to retire from the company. Jim Farley has been named the company’s new president and CEO and will join the board of directors, effective Oct. 1.
Hackett, 65, and Farley, 58, will work together on a smooth leadership transition over the next two months.
Under Hackett, Ford moved aggressively into the new era of smart vehicles and drove a deeper focus on customers’ wants and needs. At the same time, Ford improved the fitness of the base business – restructuring operations, invigorating the product portfolio and reducing bureaucracy.
“I am very grateful to Jim Hackett for all he has done to modernize Ford and prepare us to compete and win in the future,” said Bill Ford, Ford’s executive chairman. “Our new product vision – led by the Mustang Mach-E, new F-150 and Bronco family – is taking shape. We now have compelling plans for electric and autonomous vehicles, as well as full vehicle connectivity. And we are becoming much more nimble, which was apparent when we quickly mobilized to make life-saving equipment at the outset of the pandemic.”
Farley, an automotive leader with deep global experience and a successful track record, collaborated with Hackett over the past three years to develop and execute Ford’s Creating Tomorrow Together plan to transform Ford into a higher-growth, higher-margin business.
“Jim Farley matches an innate feel for cars and customers with great instincts for the future and the new technologies that are changing our industry,” Bill Ford said. “Jim’s passion for great vehicles and his intense drive for results are well known, and I have also seen him develop into a transformational leader with the determination and foresight to help Ford thrive into the future.”
Farley joined Ford in 2007 as global head of Marketing and Sales and went on to lead Lincoln, Ford South America, Ford of Europe and all Ford global markets in successive roles. In April 2019, Farley was chosen to lead Ford’s New Businesses, Technology & Strategy team, helping the company determine how to capitalize on powerful forces reshaping the industry – such as software platforms, connectivity, AI, automation and new forms of propulsion. He was named chief operating officer in February of this year.
Hackett, who will continue as a special advisor to Ford through March of 2021, said the time is right to pass the mantle of leadership to Jim Farley.
“My goal when I took on the CEO role was to prepare Ford to win in the future,” Hackett said. “The hardest thing for a proud, long-lived company to do is change to meet the challenges of the world it’s entering rather than the world it has known. I’m very proud of how far we have come in creating a modern Ford and I am very optimistic about the future.
“I have worked side-by-side with Jim Farley for the past three years and have the greatest confidence in him as a person and a leader,” Hackett said. “He has been instrumental in crafting our new product portfolio and redesigning our businesses around the world. He is also a change agent with a deep understanding of how to lead Ford in this new era defined by smart vehicles in a smart world.”
Said Farley: “I love Ford and I am honored by the opportunity to serve and create value for Ford’s employees, customers, dealers, communities and all of our stakeholders. Jim Hackett has laid the foundation for a really vibrant future and we have made tremendous progress in the past three years. I am so excited to work together with the whole Ford team to realize the full potential of this great company in a new era.”

Wall Street Skittish as Stocks Face Fourth Day of Losses: Live Updates Here’s what you need to know: A steel plant in Hefei, China. In recent weeks expectations of a global economic rebound have pushed up the price of iron ore, a key ingredient, although futures slipped lower Thursday.Credit…Jianan Yu/Reuters U.S. stocks were expected to fall when trading begins on Thursday as investors continue to worry about inflation. The S&P 500 was set to open 0.5 percent lower, futures indicated, which would extend losses for the U.S. benchmark index into a fourth day. Concerns about rapid economic growth fueling inflation, as well as rising coronavirus cases in some parts of the world, have undermined recent optimism about the global economic recovery from the pandemic. On Wednesday, minutes of the latest Federal Reserve policy meeting showed several officials thought that “at some point in upcoming meetings” they could begin to discuss tapering the bank’s bond-buying program. Investors have speculated the central bank would have to do so as price increases accelerated. The same day, data showed Britain’s annual inflation rate doubled to 1.5 percent in April. The latest weekly data on new state unemployment benefit claims will be released on Thursday. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect 450,000 claims, which would be the third consecutive weekly drop and further evidence that the labor market is slowly recovering. Until April, claims regularly exceeded 700,000 each week. European stock indexes were mixed on Thursday. The Stoxx Europe 600 rose 0.4 percent as gains in health care and industrial stocks outweighed a fall in energy company shares. The CAC 40 in France rose 0.5 percent and the DAX in Germany rose 0.4 percent. The FTSE 100 in Britain was little changed. Cryptocurrencies Bitcoin was trading just below $40,000 on Thursday morning after a volatile day on Wednesday when the price plunged to below $32,000. Ethereum, another major cryptocurrency, also recovered some of its losses from Wednesday, when it fell about 20 percent. Elsewhere in markets Oatly, the oat-based milk substitute, priced its shares at $17 each for its initial public offering, the company said on Wednesday, valuing it at about $10 billion. Oatly is expected to begin trading on Thursday with the ticker symbol“OTLY.” Oil prices dropped. Futures on West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, fell 1.7 percent to $62.28 a barrel. Metal prices have fallen after reaching record highs on expectations of a strong global recovery that would increase demand for industrial materials. Iron ore futures were down more than 6 percent on Thursday and copper prices dropped nearly 4 percent on Wednesday. In China, officials have warned against “unreasonable” increases in commodity prices, Bloomberg reported. Officials said they would increase the supply of commodities domestically in a bid to reduce prices, and bolster the oversight of trading in those markets. Josh Harris may keep busy with basketball after leaving Apollo.Credit…Jessica Kourkounis for The New York Times Joshua Harris, one of Apollo Global Management’s top executives, said on Thursday that he planned to give up day-to-day duties at the private equity giant, after clashing with his fellow founders over the departure of Leon Black as the firm’s chief executive. The departure of Mr. Harris comes months after he argued that Mr. Black should step down immediately following Apollo’s investigation into his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and registered sex offender. Mr. Harris was overruled by the other two members of Apollo’s executive committee, the firm’s other founders, Mr. Black and Marc Rowan. And instead of succeeding Mr. Black as chief executive, after having served as one of Apollo’s most visible and hands-on managers, Mr. Harris lost out to Mr. Rowan, who had announced last year that he was taking a “semi-sabbatical” from the firm. In March, however, Mr. Black — who had agreed to step down as chief executive in July, while remaining chairman — unexpectedly gave up all his duties. By then, however, Mr. Harris was seen as having less of a leadership role at the firm. It was Mr. Rowan who engineered Apollo’s takeover of Athene, a big insurance affiliate that is expected to bolster the firm’s investing power. Mr. Harris was not on Apollo’s quarterly earnings call with analysts earlier this month, an absence noted by a participant on the call. Mr. Harris will step down as soon as January, after Apollo completes the Athene deal, though he will remain a member of the firm’s board and its executive committee. He is expected to focus on an array of other business interests, including his co-ownership of several professional sports franchises — including the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and the New Jersey Devils hockey team — and his family office. “I have become increasingly involved in these areas and knew that one day they would become my primary pursuit,” Mr. Harris wrote in an internal memorandum reviewed by The New York Times. Ford’s new electric F-150, called the Lightning, is expected to go on sale next spring.Credit…Ford Ford unveiled an electric version of its popular F-150 pickup truck on Wednesday called the Lightning, signaling a shift in the auto industry’s electric vehicle push, which so far has been aimed at niche markets. With an electric motor mounted on each of its axles, the vehicle will offer more torque — in effect, faster acceleration — than any previous F-150 and will be capable of towing up to 10,000 pounds, Neal E. Boudette reports for The New York Times. Its battery pack can put out 9.6 kilowatts of energy, making it able to power a home for about three days during an outage, according to Ford. For contractors and other commercial truck users, the Lightning will be able to power electric saws, tools and lighting, potentially replacing or reducing the need for generators at work sites. It has up to 11 power outlets. The truck is expected to go on sale next spring, with a starting price of $39,974 for a model that can travel 230 miles on a full charge. A version with a range of 300 miles starts at $59,974. The truck’s base price is a few thousand dollars less than that of a Tesla Model 3 and even that of the company’s own Mustang Mach-E sport-utility vehicle. The total cost is lower still because buyers of Ford’s electric vehicles still qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit available for the purchase of E.V.s. Some states such as California, New Jersey and New York offer additional rebates worth as much as $5,000. Adam Aron, chief executive of AMC, said on the most recent earnings call that the chain had been “within months or weeks of running out of cash” multiple times during the pandemic.Credit…Philip Cheung for The New York Times The Alamo Drafthouse theater chain furloughed its 3,100 employees during the pandemic, declared bankruptcy in December, shut down three theaters as part of its restructuring plan and halted a planned project in Orlando. AMC Entertainment’s chief executive, Adam Aron, said this month that the chain had been “within months or weeks of running out of cash five different times between April 2020 and January 2021.” Now, theaters are trying to assure people that the troubles are over, Nicole Sperling reports for The New York Times. That movies are coming back, with a vengeance, and moviegoing should soon return to normal. “It’s magic, what we do,” Tim League, Alamo’s founder, said in a phone interview. He acknowledged that his company got dangerously close to running out of money in December before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. “We’re in the business of creating the best possible viewing experience — to get lost in an amazing story and have heightened emotions around it. It’s amazing when it’s done right, and we’re in the business of doing it right. I know that people are craving a return to any kind of out-of-home experience, being with people and having a sense of rejoining the community.” Some 70 percent of moviegoers are comfortable to returning to the theater, according to the exhibition research firm National Research Group. The box office for April hit $190 million, up 300 percent since February. That’s a welcome relief to the South African director Neill Blomkamp, whose new horror film “Demonic” from the indie outfit IFC will debut only in theaters at the end of August. “This brings me joy,” he said in a video message. “I want people to be terrified in a darkened theater.” Source link Orbem News #Day #Face #fourth #Live #Losses #Skittish #stocks #Street #Updates #Wall

2021 Tesla Model Y vs Ford Mustang Mach E – Driving Impressions
Daily Motor
We got our hands on a 2021 Ford Mustang Mach E Premium AWD thanks to Gene Butman Ford in Ypsilanti, MI, https://www.butmanford.com/! We will be getting a Mach E in early March for more extensive testing, but it was good to get a short time behind the wheel to compare it to our Model Y. We were impressed by how the Mach E felt behind the wheel, but it's hard to argue it's a better value than the Tesla.

Among all the family-toting machines, we drove some more exciting vehicles including the Land Rover Defender and a pair of up-and-coming EVs. Global chip shortage will slash Ford’s production by about half in the second quarter. Ford Motor said on Wednesday that the global shortage of computer chips will take a greater toll on its business than previously expected and would likely cut its vehicle production in the second quarter by about half. “The effects of the shortage have grown,” Ford’s chief financial officer, John Lawler, said during a conference call with reporters. “We now expect the semiconductor shortage to get worse and bottom out in the second quarter but continue to put pressure on our operating results in the second half of the year.” Ford expects the shortage to lower its operating profit this year by $2.5 billion, to between $5.5 billion to $6.5 billion. It had previously said the impact of the shortage would be between $1 billion to $2.5 billion. The shortage was exacerbated in March by a fire at a plant owned by a Japanese electronics supplier, Renesas. The grim outlook was delivered as part of a strong earnings report by Ford. The company made a $3.3 billion profit in the first quarter, a turnaround from a year ago when the company lost $2 billion as the coronavirus pandemic was starting to shut down much of the world’s economy. “There’s no question, we’re becoming a stronger, more resilient company,” Ford’s chief executive, James Farley, said in a statement. The shortage of computer chips has forced automakers to idle factories around the world. Ford said it produced about 200,000 fewer vehicles than originally planned in the first quarter. But the ability to command higher prices helped Ford’s bottom line, as did lower warranty costs and a $900 million gain related to its stake in Rivian, an electric vehicle start-up. While it hopes to be able to make up some of the lost production later in the year, Ford will likely produce 1.1 million fewer vehicles in 2021 than it had planned to, Mr. Lawler said. Ford has been trying to streamline its operations and raise its profits for several years with modest success until now. In 2020, it named Mr. Farley to the top job, charging him with accelerating the turnaround. The automaker has developed vehicles that could revitalize profits. It redesigned its F-150 pickup truck, the top-selling vehicle in the United States. It has also gotten strong reviews for a new Bronco sport-utility vehicle and the Mustang Mach E, an electric S.U.V. styled to resemble the company’s famous sports car. But the chip shortage has crimped its plans. In the first three months of the year, Ford has had to pause or slow production at a variety of plants, including some that make the F-150, which generates a large chunk of its profits.
