CHRYSLER PACIFICA 2020: 10 THINGS TO KNOW
Tumblr media
As soon as the Pacifica was parked in my driveway, I set out to do what I hadn’t done with a minivan for a very long time, from the time I crammed my wife, children and luggage into it (more or less in that order) before setting off on a family expedition to a beach in Maine: I juggled with the 8 seats of this Chrysler product to determine all the possible combinations… and collect at least 10 things to know in the process!
1 The test of tests
After all, the versatility of a minivan is the number one reason a consumer is interested in this type of vehicle. Not the engine, a little bit the fuel consumption, never the look. How will it accommodate my tribe and their possessions is THE question.
So I tackled each seat as if it were a Rubik cube. To make the challenge even more interesting, I refrained from consulting the owner’s manual. Because it shouldn’t take a Mensa quotient to change the configuration of a cockpit. At least, that’s what I was hoping for …
2 Advance backward!
I started with the back seats. In anticipation of a trip, they are always the first ones to leave or stay, depending on the passenger/case equation to be solved. And then, it allows you to start the race slowly, standing under the tailgate. Kneeling on the floor to unhook the other seats will come soon enough…
3 Beautiful invention
Now, at the back, the first thing you notice is the hole. The pit. When both bottom seats are used, this gap in the floor allows of course to stack more luggage. But when the seats have to fade away, this abyss swallows them up. This is the Stow ‘n Go, the system born in 2005 in the Town & Country, the ancestor of Pacifica, which can be translated as “Range & Part”.
First you grab the strap marked with the number 1 (“Elemental, my dear Watson!”) to fold down the headrests. Then by pulling the strap 2, see the entire seat tilt into the hollow. Simple and very ingenious. So much so that the Honda Odyssey, the Toyota Sienna and the Kia Sedona have all taken the idea on board (Toyota named it Split-n-Stow).
At the height of refinement, spend more at Chrysler and the Stow ‘n Go gets electrified. One little button and hop! Admire the choreography!
4 An exception
Speaking of electricity, Pacifica is famous for its PHEV version. The same 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 in my test vehicle, but with an Atkinson-cycle engine, is fitted with a 16-kWh battery as a bonus to allow this Plug-In Hybrid Pacifica to travel about 50 kilometers in 100% electric mode (the new Sienna 2021 will be hybrid but not plug-in). The good news is that the back seats of the PHEV variant also benefit from the Stow ‘n Go.
5 The shelter show
Now it’s the turn of the central squares! In the regular Pacifica (and in the Dodge Grand Caravan, the cheap cousin), the Stow ‘n Go works there too, a feat exclusive to both FCA vans. Why not in the rivals? I’ve asked Kia, Honda and Toyota. The latter responded that its Magic Slide center row provides best-in-class access and clearance to the back seat occupants, and while its seats are “easily” removable, few families bother.
The Sedona uses the Slide ‘n Stow system, with the center seats rising vertically to create a clear floor clearance and an excellent passageway to the third row. In the Pacifica, access to the back is cut by grabbing a handle on the middle seats. Pull on it and the rear of the seat lifts and tilts forward to open up a decent corridor.
6 Another treat
So I said: it’s time to go for the central squares! Here, no electric magic trick, except for the Auto Advance ‘n Return button on the B-pillar that automatically slides the driver and passenger throne to allow the middle seats to perform the Stow ‘n Go operation without interference. A piece of equipment missing from my version, so I did the same but manually.
7 More holes
8 Always the exception
In the case of the Pacifica Hybrid, if the rear seats fold down, the center seats will not because of the battery in the floor. The seatbacks can only be lowered, or removed completely from the vehicle. Given their weight, watch your back!
9 The recalcitrant
The back seats and the side seats of the center disappeared in the floor, this one is not yet naked for all that. There’s still the eighth seat, the least comfortable middle one, the one that turns into an armrest and cup holder when the backrest is folded down, or the one that doesn’t exist at all in the 7-seat versions of the Pacifica, which prefer two captain’s seats. What do we do with this seat runt who is reluctant to disappear into the basement of the vehicle? We evict him.
At floor level, see the strap. Hey yes, another one! Pull and the rear anchors are released. Now I’m on my knees and I lift everything. It comes fairly easily, then it blocks. There’s the seat belt coming down from the ceiling that holds the bataclan.
How do you get rid of it? I knock for five minutes before I discover that the fastener near the cushion has a small red slit. What if I push it in? But with what? With the metal tongue that normally goes into the belt buckle to strap the seat occupant. And, in fact, by pointing the metal wedge into the slot, the belt will not come off. Chrysler has even provided an overhead nest to store it. I can finally get the 8th seat out of the Pacifica. Mission accomplished! Hallelujah!
10 Tweaked question
My Pacifica Touring had a basic price of $43,495 and a total price of $49,665 with options and shipping. The L model is the least expensive of the range starting at $37,995. The PHEV variant starts at $53,095. The Pacifica 2021 will arrive in the last quarter of the year. Big news, all-wheel drive will be optional (except for the PHEV), like the Sienna. We don’t yet know how much it will cost, but we do know that there will be a Pacifica 2020 AWD Launch Edition starting at $50,090.

This Just In: Chrysler Pacifica Launch Edition Signals Return to AWD Minivans
Fiat-Chrysler just could not wait it seems. After already announcing that the refreshed 2021 Chrysler Pacifica minivan would offer an all-wheel drive option, a niche they began, and then abandoned, FCA is now taking orders for a special 2020 Chrysler Pacifica AWD Launch Edition before the many other 2021 updates are in place. The 2020 AWD is available in only one trim level, Touring L, but along with the added all-weather traction, the Launch Edition also includes all other drivetrain improvements scheduled for 2021. Pricing is rather modest as large people movers go, at $38,640. Along with slow sales, another reason the company’s old AWD minivan got the axe was the inability to package the system with the innovative fold-into-the-floor Stow’N’Go seating. But, with all-weather capability now increasingly in demand, the new mechanical, fully automatic AWD system was designed to accommodate the highly popular seating feature. So. there is now no sacrifice in interior flexibility when going AWD. The only other minivan offered with AWD is the Toyota Sienna, which is being totally  redesigned for 2021. The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Launch Edition will reach dealers starting late this summer.

The Priciest 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Minivan Now Pushes $55,000(!)
Car shoppers won’t bat an eye shelling out $50,000-plus for a luxury SUV. But for some reason, the idea of paying the same amount for a minivan can be a hard pill to swallow. Once loaded up with options, today’s minivans can easily get up to $50K or more—and believe it or not, they sell. The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica’s new Pinnacle trim level is the latest to push the minivan pricing envelope with its starting price just under $55,000.
The Pinnacle slots above the previous range-topper, the already classy Limited trim, and is priced accordingly at $54,885. For comparison, the most expensive Honda Odyssey, the 2021 Odyssey Elite, starts at $48,940. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet for the all-hybrid 2021 Toyota Sienna lineup, but the outgoing 2020 Sienna Limited Premium AWD started at $50,590.
For the Pinnacle’s nearly $55K sticker price you get standard all-wheel drive (a new-for-2021 option for the Pacifica lineup), quilted Caramel Nappa leather seats, lumbar pillows for the second-row captain’s chairs, an exclusive center console design with Caramel accent stitching and dual-level storage, a unique instrument cluster with Mid-century Timber Hydro faux wood bezels, black suede headliner, and Satin Chrome switchgear and interior trim. On the outside, the Pinnacle is distinguishable by its unique 20-inch wheels, grille surround, moldings, and badging all finished in Platinum Chrome.
The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle AWD builds on the equipment list of the Limited with a standard Safety Sphere package, which includes a 360-degree camera and ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist and Front Park Assist. FamCam, Chrysler’s answer to Honda’s CabinWatch, comes standard along with a Uconnect Theater rear entertainment system and 19-speaker Harman-Kardon audio system. The Pinnacle trim level is also available on the front-wheel-drive-only Pacifica Hybrid starting at $52,340.
Of course, you don’t have to go whole hog when buying a Chrysler minivan. The 2021 Chrysler Voyager, the budget version of the Pacifica that doesn’t receive an exterior refresh—meaning it looks the same as the ’20 Pacifica—starts at just $28,730. At that price you get third-row Stow ‘n Go seats (but not folding second-row chairs), a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available active safety features like pedestrian automatic emergency braking and Forward Collision Warning-Plus.
The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Touring starts at $36,540, while the upgraded Touring L is priced from $39,640. The Pacifica’s new AWD feature is a $2,995 option on either trim. The Limited trim starts at $49,885 and includes AWD as standard when equipped with the 287-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. Opt for the plug-in Limited Hybrid, however, and the starting price drops to $47,340.
The cheapest 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the Touring model, which starts at $41,490. As before, the Pacifica Hybrid delivers a combined 260 hp from its 3.6-liter V-6 and two electric motors, along with an all-electric range of 30 miles on a fully charged battery. The Pacifica Hybrid has a total driving range of more than 500 miles, though the tradeoff is losing the option of second-row Stow ‘n Go seats and AWD.
2021 Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager Pricing
Voyager L: $28,730
Voyager LX: $31,540
Pacifica Touring: $36,540 (add $2,995 for AWD)
Pacifica Touring L: $39,640 (add $2,995 for AWD)
Pacifica Touring Hybrid: $41,490
Pacifica Touring L Hybrid: $43,790
Pacifica Limited Hybrid: $47,340
Pacifica Limited (AWD only): 49,885
Pacifica Pinnacle Hybrid: $52,340
Pacifica Pinnacle (AWD only): $54,855

2021 Toyota Sienna minivan goes hybrid-only with a radical new design
Toyota’s Sienna minivan has been given a radical, bullet-train-inspired makeover.
Toyota
It’s been over a decade since the current, third-generation Toyota Sienna minivan debuted, and in recent years, it’s grown a bit stale, overtaken by newer rivals like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. But Toyota on Monday officially unveiled the new 2021 Sienna, which has been redesigned from the ground up and is gunning for the minivan segment crown. (See how the 2021 Sienna compares with its rivals in our Sienna, Odyssey and Pacifica spec comparison.)
This fourth-generation Sienna was designed by CALTY’s Newport Beach, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, design teams, but it looks wholly Japanese. Toyota describes the new Sienna as “bold, sexy and provocative,” and says the front end’s massive grille was inspired by the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train. More than anything, it reminds me of the awesome, boxy, overstyled JDM minivans that we don’t get in the US.
I don’t think the Sienna looks as outright aggressive as other recent Toyota models, and that’s a good thing. The bulging rear fender is lifted from the Highlander but looks more natural and soft here, and there are a number of nice, subtle surfacing changes like the lines coming off the LED headlights. The rear is a bit more angular, with slim LED taillights and a lot of creases, and the tailgate has a slight whiff of a ducktail spoiler. An XSE model (the one shown in red) gets a sportier body kit, dark 20-inch wheels and different interior trimmings.
2020 Toyota Sienna vs. 2021 Toyota Sienna
2020 Toyota Sienna 2021 Toyota Sienna Engine 3.5-liter V6 2.5-liter I4 hybrid Power 296 hp 243 hp (net) Torque 263 lb-ft N/A Transmission 8-speed auto CVT Fuel economy 21 mpg combined 33 mpg combined (est.) Length 200.6 in 203.7 in Width 78.1 in 78.5 in Height 68.9 in 68.5 in
Toyota gave the interior a radical overhaul, too. The automaker says minivan owners don’t want to feel like they’re driving a bus, so the wide dashboard is more similar in design to the brand’s SUVs. It’s got a high-mounted infotainment display and a nice mix of colors and materials, and it looks more upscale overall. The biggest change is a huge “bridge console” between the front seats that’s connected to the dash, which Toyota says is positioned for better ergonomics and comfort. That console offers cup holders, a wireless phone charger and some additional storage compartments, while the open area underneath is large enough to fit a purse or a backpack.
But I’m most interested in the second row of seats. The new Sienna has available as an option Super Long Slide captain’s chairs, which can slide up to 25 inches fore and aft. These reclining seats can be equipped with built-in ottomans, too. Lower trims get three-across seats in the second row with a stowable middle seat. On the top trims the seats are covered in leather with both heating and ventilation for the front two occupants, while the second row can be heated. (The second-row seats aren’t removable and can’t fold, though, due to integrated side airbags.)
Now playing: Watch this: 2021 Toyota Sienna comes standard with outrageous looks,…
3: 04
New platform, new powertrain
The new Sienna rides on Toyota’s modular TNGA-K platform, the same one underpinning cars like the Camry, Avalon and Highlander. Compared with the 2020 model, the new generation is 3.1 inches longer overall and rides on a 1.2-inch-longer wheelbase, and it’s slightly wider and a little lower in height. Toyota worked to make the new Sienna quieter and less affected by external vibrations, as well.
For the first time, the Sienna is available as a hybrid — and only as a hybrid. The sole powertrain is the same basic setup found in other Toyota hybrid models like the RAV4, using a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors and a battery pack mounted under the front seats. The Sienna’s hybrid system puts out 243 total horsepower, 53 hp less than the current model’s V6 engine. But power isn’t the point: Toyota says it estimates the 2021 Sienna will get 33 miles per gallon combined, way better than the 21 mpg that the 2020 Sienna gets. It also bests the Odyssey and Pacifica, both of which use V6 engines and get 22 mpg combined.
Toyota wanted the Sienna’s interior to feel less like that of a bus.
Toyota
Not giving the Sienna a plug is intentional, Toyota says, and there are no plans for a PHEV version. A lot of Sienna owners are repeat customers, so the new one needed to feel familiar, with no need to plug it in to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition to the standard three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, the 2021 Sienna has a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for all hybrid components including the battery.
All-wheel drive is an option on all trim levels, with the system using a separate electric motor for the rear wheels instead of a traditional transfer case and driveshaft (no word on if it adds any extra horsepower). It’s able to send up to 80% of torque to the rear wheels, and Toyota says the all-wheel-drive model is more agile in the corners. I expect the AWD Sienna to get slightly worse fuel economy than the FWD model, though Toyota hasn’t released official numbers.
2021 Toyota Sienna design was inspired by Japanese bullet trains
See all photos
The 2021 Sienna has multiple driving modes including one for EV-only operation (for very short distances at low speeds), and there’s an adjustable regenerative braking feature that mimics the act of downshifting, ideal for hilly terrain. A new Predictive Efficient Drive feature remembers driving habits, road conditions and repeated routes to optimize when the battery is charged by the hybrid system. This feature is also found in the new 2021 Venza hybrid.
Like the current Sienna, the new one is able to tow up to 3,500 pounds, and it has an available 120-volt AC outlet and 1,500-watt inverter to power gear and accessories. Toyota will offer accessories from Yakima that have been designed for the Sienna including a bike rack, cross bars and a rooftop carrier. Who needs an SUV when you have a minivan?
I don’t think it’s a stretch to call this the best-looking Sienna ever.
Toyota
Segment-first tech and features
More than anything, minivans are all about interior functionality, and the 2021 Sienna has it in spades. There are as many as 18 cup holders, six more than the maximum offered by the 2020 model. Standard equipment for every Sienna includes power sliding doors, auto up/down windows, three-zone automatic climate control and second-row sunshades. Climbing the trim level ladder — LE, Limited, XSE and Platinum — adds features like kick-activated sliding doors and power tailgate, four-zone auto climate control, a sunroof, sunshades for the third row and a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel that’s also heated. The Limited trim gets a built-in vacuum and storage box, while the Platinum replaces the box with a refrigerator.
The “base” infotainment setup is a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and SiriusXM capability, six speakers and seven USB ports. Moving up in the trim levels adds HD Radio, onboard Wi-Fi, navigation and a 1,200-watt JBL audio system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer. There’s an available 11.6-inch rear entertainment system with 1080p resolution and an HDMI input, a remote controller and a pair of wireless headphones. A 7-inch screen in the gauge cluster can show hybrid system info, while an optional 10-inch head-up display can project navigation info, as well.
The new Sienna is longer, lower and wider than before.
Toyota
Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver assist features is standard across the board, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning with steering assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Every 2021 Sienna has 10 airbags, including curtain airbags for all three rows and the aforementioned side airbags built into the first and second-row seats. A digital rearview mirror and a 360-degree camera with a curb view are new options, and there’s also a rear-seat occupant reminder system.
Toyota hasn’t released any pricing yet, but the Sienna will go on sale toward the end of the year and will continue to be built at Toyota’s plant in Indiana. It will have to face still-tough competition in the form of the face-lifted Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey and an upcoming next-gen Kia Sedona. (See how it stacks up against those competitors in our spec comparison story.) But, at least for now, the 2021 Sienna seems poised to be a major contender.

2021 Lexus IS
New Post has been published on https://carsoops.com/2021-lexus-is/
2021 Lexus IS
Latest reports are recommending that the 2021 Lexus IS is about to come upgraded. This appears pretty rational, considering that the present generation has been on the marketplace considering that 2013. The compact Sedan has remained in production for several years. However, there were some reports about discontinuation, due to crossover expansion. Luckily, that won’t occur. This Sedan will continue to remain in the company’s lineup, and it is about to come much better than ever, with new style, much better efficiencies, and even more luxurious interior. We expect to see it sometime in the next year.
2021 Lexus IS Redesign
The 2021 Lexus IS redesign is about to bring a lot of novelties. We depend on new styling as well. If we can rely on the most recent reports, the new model will continue with a typical sedan layout. Still, we anticipate seeing a complete load of novelties. More than likely, there will not be extreme changes. The upcoming model will continue the evolution of existing style language, based on the popular spindle grille layout. At this moment, we do not have details about prospective changes in regards to size, but somewhat longer wheelbase appears quite possible.
BMW Sourced Engine
Numerous reports are recommending 2021 Lexus IS to get a new engine lineup, straight from the Bavarian carmaker. Supposedly, the new model will have a lot in common with the new Supra, particularly in terms of drivetrain and other mechanical components. The existing model features two engines in the deal. A small 2.0-liter turbo-four is booked for base models, while a well-known 3.5-liter V6 comes in 3 output versions.
Read more:
2021 Acura MDX
2021 Ford Mach E
2021 Volvo XC90
2021 Toyota Sienna
The new model is about to feature a BMW-sourced engine, presumably. We are about to see the very same inline-six that powers the new Supra. This engine delivers around 335 horsepower, and it needs to be booked for the flagship variation, which will come as the 2021 Lexus IS 350. Likewise, we count on at least one more engine in the deal. That will probably be some turbo-four unit, though it is still unknown will this unit come from Toyota or Bavarian company. Likewise, we rely on an 8-speed automated transmission. RWD will be basic, while AWD design must remain in the offer too.
2021 Lexus IS Interior
Unlike the new Supra, the 2021 Lexus IS definitely won’t come with BMW’s cabin style. We will see Lexus’ modern interior design. Usually, for the brand, the general quality will be terrific. Depend on hi-end materials and stylish style, simply it holds with the present model. On the other side, we anticipate big enhancements in terms of tech features. This especially refers to the infotainment system, which is currently really made complex to utilize and does not come with essential mobile phone integration features, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. As we now mentioned, the new model might become a little larger, which would be highly useful in terms of legroom and especially cargo area. The present model features one of the tiniest trunks in the class, with just 10.8 cubic feet behind rear seats.
2021 Lexus IS Release Date and Price
When it pertains to the 2021 Lexus IS release date, most current reports recommend that the new generation will be found in the next year. Nevertheless, it is still early for more precise dates. In terms of rate, the new model shouldn’t feature larger differences compared to the existing one, which starts at around 38.500 dollars.

Is the Chrysler Pacifica Still the Minivan to Beat?
A lot has happened since my last update. A refreshed 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was revealed with a more menacing face and new and updated features. My wife and I are now expecting our second child. Oh, and the world shut down thanks to a global health crisis. None of those things is to blame for the tardiness of this 2018 Pacifica wrap-up review that you’re reading in 2020. I’ve come to learn in my nearly two years of parenthood that it’s just tougher to stay on top of things when you have a kid. As the Steve Miller Band famously sang, “Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’…”
Does that mean this report is irrelevant? Quite the contrary, I would argue. The extra time has given me additional context to consider when evaluating the pre-refresh Pacifica. As an owner of the old model, would I feel left out not having the latest and greatest version? Would I regret not having waited for the (finally) new 2021 Toyota Sienna? Will parents just now entering the minivan market leave much on the table with a lightly used Pacifica instead of a brand-new model? Let’s explore those topics and more.
2018 Chrysler Pacifica vs. 2021 Chrysler Pacifica: What’s the Difference?
For the 2021 model year, the Chrysler Pacifica receives a more aggressive look, with a large mesh grille and redesigned, angrily slanted headlights front and center. This face-lift is intended to move the Pacifica away from the testosterone-sapping image that’s inexorably linked to the minivan genre and closer to a more fashionable SUV look. Personally, I’m not a fan. The pre-refresh Pacifica has a streamlined elegance to it, which I feel has broader appeal. It’s a minivan, and it owns that—and once you accept it for what it is, it’s a handsome vehicle. With this new one I see the same van wearing a luchador mask.
What I would miss by not getting the 2021 Pacifica is the option of all-wheel drive (though FCA just announced a special AWD Launch Edition for the 2020 model). AWD is expected to add about $1,500 to the price of a Pacifica and doesn’t come at the cost of the van’s best party trick, its Stow ’N Go seating. The addition of AWD should give the new Pacifica more traction (pun intended) in regions that get snow. The plug-in hybrid and lower-cost Chrysler Voyager remain front-drive only, however. Another handy upgrade is the available 10.1-inch touchscreen with sharper resolution and FCA’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Top models also get a headliner-mounted FamCam rear passenger monitor, FCA’s answer to Honda’s CabinWatch feature.
Chrysler Pacifica vs. The Minivan Competition
We put just under 20,000 miles on the long-term Chrysler Pacifica in the 12 months it was in our care, and in that time staffers used it to shuttle their families, move in and out of their homes, shoot car-to-car photos out the back, and much more. In almost every situation, the Pacifica was more than up to the task. I can’t overstate the usefulness of the Stow ’N Go seats. In five minutes or less, you can transform the Pacifica’s interior from a seven-seat people hauler to a cavernous two-seat cargo van. Or if you just need to lose one, two, or three seats, you can do that, too. You have options, and that’s what made the Pacifica the go-to choice for most jobs that didn’t require a pickup bed.
Fold-into-the-floor seats remain an FCA-exclusive feature, and that gives the Pacifica a huge advantage over its competitors. You can’t slide them forward like the seats in other minivans, but the seats fold forward for third-row access, and the space between the captain’s chairs offers ample room for kids to access the third row. It’s a trade-off I’m willing to make for the added versatility Stow ’N Go brings to the table.
Subjectively, the Pacifica drives better than any other minivan on the market. We haven’t driven the new Sienna as of this writing, but when driven back to back with the Honda Odyssey, the Pacifica’s ride, handling, and steering precision shine. Where the Pacifica loses ground to the Odyssey is in the transmission department—FCA’s nine-speed automatic still lacks refinement and can be clunky with its shifts. It’ll be interesting to see how the revised 2021 V-6 Pacifica stacks up against the new Sienna with its 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain and CVT—especially now that the Pacifica offers AWD, too. Toyota estimates the 2021 Sienna will achieve a combined 33 mpg, which would be 3 mpg better than the Pacifica plug-in hybrid. The standard Pacifica with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, meanwhile, is rated at 22 mpg combined, though throughout our test we averaged 19.4 mpg, just beating the predicted EPA (and Real MPG) city rating of 19 mpg.
What’s the Chrysler Pacifica Ownership Experience Like?
The Chrysler Pacifica was very easy to live with on a daily basis. Our Limited model was a particularly cushy commuter with its stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, slick Uconnect system with Apple CarPlay, and cooled leather seats. The ride on the highway was smooth and quiet with the standard 18-inch wheels, though your experience may vary if you opt for the 20s.
As I’ve chronicled extensively in these updates, our long-term Pacifica was plagued by an intermittent stalling issue that landed it in the shop for a solid month. The dealership provided me with a rental for the duration of the repair, but that’s a long time for a car to be out of action. What’s worse is the initial visit didn’t fix the problem, nor did the one after that. FCA corporate had to bring in its own team to finally fix the issue. I never did get a full explanation, but the root cause was a software flaw in the powertrain control module, which was fixed with a reflash.
In addition to that major hiccup, our long-termer suffered premature anti-roll bar link failure, which caused a disconcerting knocking sound from the front wheelwell. The heater also stopped working before the odometer hit the 10,000-mile mark. If there’s an upside, it’s that all of the above issues were covered under the warranty, including the rental, which would have cost $1,000 by itself. As for regular maintenance, the two trips to the dealer for service totaled $276.88. We don’t put a whole lot of minivans through our long-term testing, so our most recent direct comparison is a 2016 Kia Sedona, which cost $364.30 over four service visits. Because many minivan shoppers also consider three-row SUVs, our Subaru Ascent cost us $0 in maintenance but incurred more than $1,700 in other expenses, our 2018 Volkswagen Atlas set us back $167.69, our 2018 Dodge Durango saw just $77.90 in service costs, and our 2017 Mazda CX-9 ran up $322.35 in service charges.
Should You Buy a Chrysler Pacifica?
Never have I been so conflicted over a long-term vehicle than with the Pacifica. On the one hand, it’s a pleasure to drive and offers so much utility—and in Limited trim, plenty of luxury, to boot. But on the other, this particular example has been in and out of the shop more than my previous two long-termers (a Kia Stinger and Mini Clubman S) combined. The dealership experience also left something to be desired. Although I could tell the service advisers and customer service reps were trying their best, there was always an underlying feeling of chaos behind the scenes. This was backed up by parts constantly being delayed or lost or broken in transit and repair orders being misplaced or never logged to begin with. Maybe the problem lies with FCA’s parts supply infrastructure, maybe it’s just this particular dealership’s service department, or maybe it’s a little bit of both, but I was never glad to be there, especially as often as I had to be.
With that said, when the Pacifica was working, I loved every minute behind the wheel. I thought it would get boring eventually—especially coming out of a Kia Stinger—but it never did. Instead of feeling like an X-wing pilot, I was the captain of the Millennium Falcon with a princess riding shotgun and a tiny Wookiee in the back manning the laser turret, and I don’t consider that a downgrade. Hopefully the major kinks have been ironed out with the 2021 model. If so, then the Pacifica will be pretty tough to beat.
