SL por Sport Leicht (Deportivo ligero) y con el sobrenombre de Flügeltüren (alas de pájaro, de gaviota lo dirían en inglés), con el motor de seis cilindros en línea de la limousine "Adenauer" convenientemente preparado y un chasis realizado con tubos de pequeño diámetro soldados en triángulos, dio como resultado la respuesta de Mercedes Benz al reto de la competición para las 24 H. de Le Mans, y otras muchas carreras de larga distancia como las Mille Miglia, o la Pan Americana. El coche no era extremadamente potente, pero sí muy fiable y ligero además de rígido. Entre las peculiaridades se encontraba el tener que inclinar 50 grados el motor para poder hacer un capo muy plano y bajar el centro de gravedad. La cuestión de las puertas en disposición tan original, no era algo estético. El chasis tubular ocaupaba casi todo el lateral del vehículo, con lo cual las puertas no podían bajar más que un tercio de la cintura del vehículo, y para facilitar la entrada y salida, sólo pudieron recurrir a la solución de que las puertas se levantaran. Prescindieron de cualquier apéndice en aras de lograr la máxima fluidez de líneas con el parabrisas inclinado y ni una sola arista viva. El resultado fue un coche más ancho que alto y con un impresionante Cx 0,25, que no desmerecería en la actualidad ni mucho menos. El doblete en la meta de la edición de LM de ese 1952 se lograría además del récord de velocidad media para las 24 horas con la media de 155,57 km/h. Casi nada. Las siguientes evoluciones llegarían hasta 1955 en la que aparecería la versión de calle (más conocida por el público con denominación W198 ya con motor 8 cilindros en línea. Su participación en las 24 horas LM de ese año 1955 cobraría el trágico protagonismo de estar como protagonista del terrible accidente que marcaría la historia de la carrera. Mi suegro Georges me lo ha contado con detalles, pues aunque jovencito, se le quedó grabado con sumo detalle tanto el momento preciso como los posteriores.
