Offering drivers plenty of choice, three basic flavors of RAV4 are available. There’s the standard model, an economical hybrid and then the RAV4 Prime, the plug-in hybrid variant with up to 42 miles of electric-only range. This vehicle also boasts re-valved twin-tube shock absorbers for better body control over large surface irregularities. Providing and extra helping of traction is a set of Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail all-terrain tires mounted to 18-inch TRD wheels. These rubbers look super aggressive but are surprisingly agreeable. Indeed, the TRD Off-Road’s suspension tuning is totally livable, providing an impressively smooth on-pavement ride with little tire noise. If towing is your thing, this RAV4 can drag up to 3,500 pounds, enough for a couple snowmobiles or a small trailer.
My tester is also fitted with what have to be the most useless running boards in automotive history. The RAV4 sits low enough that they’re completely unnecessary. Making matters worse, these things are sure to get in the way while off-roading, plus they stick out far enough to streak your pant legs with whatever slop you last drove through. But here’s the kicker: All this added inconvenience costs an extra $549.
Get past those optional running boards and you’ll find this SUV’s interior is well built and the overall design is easy on the eyes, without any frou-frou add-ons or unnecessary sculpting. Mazda’s CX-5 is clearly more upscale and the Honda CR-V’s cabin is nicer, too, but there’s no shortage of soft materials in this Toyota and I love the racy-looking red stitching that runs across the dashboard, door panels and seats. This is complemented by crimson accents around the cup holders and available wireless charging plate as well as on the rubber floor mats.

An 8-inch touchscreen is perched on the dashboard where it’s easy to reach and see (lower trims feature a 7-incher). Unfortunately, this display is home to an outdated infotainment system that’s challenging to use and rather unattractive. But hey, at least Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa are all supported. I appreciate the rubbery temperature- and audio-control knobs, which feel great in my hands, but some of the other HVAC buttons are a bit too small to easily see while driving. Beyond all that, this RAV4 also features the $1,620 Premium Audio package, which includes an 11-speaker JBL sound system, embedded navigation and a few other goodies.
As in other Toyotas, the RAV4’s back-up camera is poor, providing a low-resolution image of what’s behind you. The $1,950 TRD Off-Road Technology Package includes a 360-degree camera system, which is helpful, but just as gritty looking. This options group contains other goodies, too, like a digital rear-view mirror, parking sensors, a wireless charging plate and more, so it is worth the extra outlay even if the camera system is merely so-so.
The RAV4’s front chairs are supportive and comfortable, helping provide a good view of the road ahead. This SUV’s backseat is also spacious, with plenty of room for knees and noggins, though the rear cushion is just a tad too low for it to be totally accommodating. Also, the back door openings are narrow, so it can be challenging to access the rear accommodations.
This Toyota’s four-cylinder engine works surprisingly well, even if it’s a bit noisy while working.

This example’s wide, power-opening hatch makes it a snap to access the cargo hold, which provides 37.5 cubic-feet of storage space behind the rear backrests or 69.8 cubes with them folded down. That’s more space than you get in a CX-5 or Ford Escape, but those scores do fall slightly behind the capacious CR-V.
The RAV4 is propelled by a familiar drivetrain, one used to great advantage throughout Toyota’s automotive empire. Nestled between this SUV’s front fenders is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder that delivers a reasonable 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The engine is backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission that is, for the most part, quick-witted and smooth, though occasionally gearchanges can feel a bit uneven. The performance this powertrain delivers is perfectly fine; unladen, the RAV4 has no trouble getting up to highway speed. Really, I have no complaints about this SUV’s get-up-and-go, rather, I’m not a huge fan of its refinement. The engine is gruff sounding when on the boil and sometimes you feel uncouth vibrations.
But hey, at least the RAV4 is efficient. TRD Off-Road models come with torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, a feature that should make them reasonably capable little mountain goats. Despite the added weight and friction of four-corner traction, this SUV is rated at 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. In mixed (though mostly highway) driving, I’m averaging about 31.5 mpg, which is, frankly, stellar for a vehicle this tall fitted with such aggressive tires. 
The infotainment system is one of the RAV4’s biggest weaknesses.

At interstate speeds a bit of wind noise makes its presence known, but this is hardly objectionable. The RAV4’s ride is mostly supple and the brake pedal feels good beneath your tootsies. This vehicle’s steering is crisp and quick, but a tad too light for my taste and the wheel’s rim is almost dainty its cross-section is so small.
Helping keep the RAV4 shiny side up, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard fare on every 2021 model. This suite of driver aids includes lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition and more. The headline features, though, are adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Together, these two amenities make long highway drives a breeze, keeping the vehicle from wandering and effortlessly matching the speed of surrounding traffic.
Keeping pace with rival SUVs, an entry-level, front-drive 2021 Toyota RAV4 starts at 27 grand and change including $1,175 in destination fees. Three-pointed star of the show
There was no doubt about the leading attraction at Frankfurt this year. Mercedes-Benz finally took the wraps off its long-awaited Mercedes-AMG Project ONE supercar. BMW’s i division steps up
BMW showed off a concept for an electric sports saloon called the i Vision Dynamics, which previews an upcoming i5 saloon to join the company’s i3 and i8 all-electric models. Longer, lower and wider than a regular 3 Series saloon, the i5 is set to reach roads by 2021.
Also on the BMW stage was the Concept X7 iPerformance, previewing a large luxury SUV to take on Range Rover. Powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, as well as regular petrol and diesel models, the production BMW X7 is set to arrive late next year.
Finally, Frankfurt marked the public premiere of the already-announced upgrades to the successful BMW i3 city car, including a high-performance i3s model.

Volkswagen wants you to forget dieselgate

Mercedes-Benz makes the case for hydrogen
While most car manufacturers are looking squarely at batteries to deliver electricity, Mercedes-Benz remains part of the minority who still insist that hydrogen fuel cells will play an important role in powering electric cars over coming decades.
In Frankfurt, Mercedes showed off a different kind of plug-in hybrid; a GLC SUV that combined a hydrogen fuel cell with a battery to delivery electricity in two ways. Promising considerable advantages over a regular plug-in hybrid (the fuel cell and the battery both supply electricity to the same motor, rather than having to fit both a petrol engine and an electric motor on board), the GLC F-Cell could enter limited production in the next year or so.
Mercedes also previewed an upcoming electric small car and its next-generation A-Class hatchback with the EQA concept car. The production EQA will not replace the A-Class, and will likely be built on a completely different platform to maximise the advantages of its electric drivetrain. It’s possible that the next A-Class, due in 2019, could be the last conventionally-powered small car from Mercedes-Benz.

MINI and Honda preview new electric city cars
With large cities likely to be the major battleground for electric vehicle sales over the next few years, both MINI and Honda rolled out concepts that preview production models that will go on sale by 2019.
The MINI Electric Concept gave an early indication of what the production model will look like, smoothing out some of the traditional MINI design cues to improve airflow. Interior design was not part of the project, so the car on the Frankfurt stand had simple blacked-out windows. The Honda Urban EV combines retro design cues with future tech in a far more successful way than any MINI design since the original BMW MINI back in 2001. Paying homage to the original 1970s Honda Civic, the Urban EV previews an all-electric city car that is set to hit the streets by 2019.
Set to be the flag-bearer for Honda’s electric programme, the Urban EV will lead a wave of electrified models starting with the CR-V Hybrid, set to be launched next year. Honda’s target is for two-thirds of all European sales to be hybrid or electric models by 2025.

Audi Aicon predicts a first-class future
Audi’s Aicon (short for AI concept) envisages a completely self-driving future, with not a steering wheel or brake pedal in sight. Instead, passengers can relax in a cabin that has been inspired by first-class aeroplane cabins.
Cabin space is huge, thanks to an overall vehicle size longer than the Audi A8 flagship saloon. Passengers can stretch out in comfort while the car takes care of the driving. And since the car’s “brain” uses radar and laser systems to see where it’s going, there’s no need for traditional headlights. Instead of being used to see where you’re going, the Aicon’s elaborate LED units are used for people to see it coming.
Renault makes your car a part of your home
The Renault Symbioz concept was very similar to the Audi Aicon, forecasting a fully-autonomous electric luxury vehicle for 2030 or thereabouts. But Renault has also been thinking about how such a vehicle can integrate with the rest of your life, for those times when it’s not delivering you from A to B.
Inspired by the design of living rooms, Renault sees the Symbioz being used as an extra room of your house, where you can either sit and chat with a friend (or whatever else you might want to do in the privacy of your back seat), or lock yourself away to do some work away from the disruption of the rest of the family.
The Symbioz would also sync with your diary to manage energy consumption for best efficiency. If you don’t have any trips planned, it will use the electricity in its battery to power your house. Then it will charge up overnight when electricity is cheap to be full of charge before you need it again. Of course, if you’re rubbish at keeping a diary or like being spontaneous in your driving, it might not be for you…
A smart vision for future car use
Daimler’s city car brand, smart, has already announced plans to go fully-electric in coming years. At Frankfurt, smart showed off a concept car called the Vision EQ, a self-driving city car that will act like a driverless cab to pick up and drop off passengers as it goes along.
There were no great surprises at Frankfurt, with every major new model having been already announced, previewed or teased in advance of press day. The major reveal of the show was the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE, and the only real surprise was that it was uglier than almost every media rendering had predicted…
Unsurprisingly, there were no great announcements about any new diesel engines or models. Industry figures continue to insist that diesel cars will play an important role for the foreseeable future, but the end point for diesel seems to be getting ever closer. A flurry of new electrified vehicles that will arrive over the next few years will only hasten its demise.
Next up is the Tokyo motor show, where we can expect to see what the major Japanese manufacturers have to offer in the way of concept cars and new metal.

How does Passenger Space Compare?
Front seat volume is less crucial because the seat tracks move to make most legs comfortable—and for 2021 the range of motion in both directions is increased. And with no three-place front bench seat, shoulder room is less important. Headroom matters, and Nissan has been selling a best-in-class 41.6 inches of it. That shrinks to 41.1 inches because the roof was lowered 0.4 inch (adding a sunroof subtracts another 2 inches). Rear seat space was lacking in the outgoing Rogue, so Nissan reapportioned some length from the front to the back, trading 1.5 inches of front legroom for 0.6 inch more in back. There’s also 0.7 inch more rear headroom (1.2 more with a sunroof), while shoulder room remains unchanged. That pencils to a 1.6-cubic-foot rear-passenger volume improvement to 48.8 cubes without a sunroof (the improvement is 2.2 cubes to 47.1 with sunroof). Those figures bump the Rogue’s rear seat from ninth of ten (besting only the RAV4) to seventh, passing the aging Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. In terms of overall passenger space, however, the Rogue holds its fourth-place ranking, behind Forester, Escape, and CR-V.
How does Cargo Space Compare?
The Rogue shrank in length and height but adopted a slightly blockier design that helped add 4.1 cubic feet of overall seats-down cargo space, for 74.1 in total. That ranks Rogue third behind the Subaru Forester and Honda CR-V. The top three all rank well ahead of the rest of the competition, which measures from 54.7 (Jeep Cherokee) to 69.8 (Toyota RAV4). Put the rear seats up, and we notice that those 1.6-2.2 cubes of passenger space the Rogue gained come at a cost of 2.8 cubic feet of cargo space. Nevertheless, the remaining 36.5 cubic feet still rank Rogue third—now behind the CR-V (39.2) and RAV4 (37.6).
How Big is it on the Outside?
Even after shrinking 1.7 inches in length and 0.4 inch in height, the Rogue remains second-longest (to Equinox) on the third longest wheelbase (tied with Jeep Cherokee). Only the Subaru is narrower, and overall height ranks right in the middle, but in terms of squeezing the most people and cargo space out into the least exterior length, height, and width, the Rogue again ranks third—now behind the boxier Subaru Forester and Honda CR-V.

Nissan continues to offer just one powertrain option—a (new) naturally aspirated 2.5-liter I-4 teamed with a CVT. That ranks as the biggest displacement engine in the class, but competitors often team turbos and/or hybridization with their equivalent or smaller engines, which leaves Nissan’s 181 hp and 181 lb-ft decidedly mid-pack (and below the class averages, which are in the mid-190s for each). Transmission options span six, eight, and nine-speed automatics as well as other continuously variable transmissions, which always aim to optimize performance and fuel economy. The Rogue’s performance should rank solidly mid-pack.
Where Does the Rogue’s Fuel Economy Rank Among Non-Hybrids?
