Mark Reuss Appointed GM President
Mark Reuss is the new president of General Motors, succeeding Dan Ammann who now leads GM’s Cruise autonomous tech division.
Prior to his new appointment, Reuss served as the head of GM’s global product portfolio. Since last year, he has also been in charge of Cadillac, which is experiencing a host of changes. The brand decided to move its headquarters from New York back to Detroit, and it’s launching a new vehicle every six months through 2021.
Reuss has bolstered GM’s lineup with new crossovers, including the Chevrolet Traverse and Cadillac XT4. In recent years, he has also been busy redesigning the automaker’s full-size trucks and preparing to release the mid-engine Corvette. While the company says it remains committed to cars, it’s slashing a number of models including the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac CT6, and Cadillac XTS.
In his new role as president, Reuss will take charge of the company’s Quality organization. He will also double resources for electric and autonomous cars in the next two years. By 2023, the automaker will offer at least 20 all-electric vehicles.
With a background in engineering, Reuss has spent his entire career at GM. He joined the team as a student intern in 1983, eventually working his way up to chief engineer of GM’s large luxury vehicles and leader for GM’s racing vehicles, among other roles. For a brief period, he was GM’s vice president of global engineering. From 2009 to 2013, he served as president of GM’s North American division. Reuss’ father also served as GM president from 1990-1992, according to Automotive News.
“Mark’s global operational experience, deep product knowledge and strong leadership will serve us well as we continue to strengthen our current business, take advantage of growth opportunities and further define the future of personal mobility,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra in a release. “Mark has played a critical role in leading the development of the company’s award-winning vehicles while transitioning his team to prepare for growing electrification and autonomous technologies.”
Reuss’ appointment takes effect immediately.

Cadillac dealers leave meeting upbeat about product, marketing
Cadillac plans new marketing and other messaging in coming weeks as the all-new XT4 compact crossover begins to arrive in dealerships.
Cadillac dealers who got a preview of the brand’s upcoming products say they’re optimistic that a long-promised renaissance is finally beginning to take shape.
About 1,000 dealer personnel, including 712 dealers globally, were given a peek at Cadillac’s plans through 2021 last week at its dealer business conference in Las Vegas.
The event also included upcoming marketing efforts and looks at the new XT6 three-row crossover, CT4 and CT5 sedans, and the next-generation Escalade.
Two dealer officials who didn’t want to be identified because the meetings were private said there was no mention of a Cadillac sports car or performance electric vehicle, which some expect the brand to launch in the coming years.
These officials also confirmed that the upcoming products, as promised by Cadillac, were heavily influenced by the acclaimed Escala concept from 2016.
Several dealers described the event as being reminiscent of past meetings that introduced brand-changing products such as the Escalade and Seville as well as the launch of the brand’s noted Northstar engine.
“This was like the high notes from every Cadillac meeting I’ve been to in the last 25 years as a Cadillac dealer,” said Nelson Andrews, dealer principal of Andrews Cadillac in Brentwood, Tenn. “I’m very impressed by the team right now. I feel this is the meeting Cadillac needed.”

Shifting the tone: “We want everybody to have a bounce in their step,” Carlisle says.
The meeting was the first major event for Cadillac President Steve Carlisle, who replaced the ousted Johan de Nysschen in April. It also marked the Cadillac debut for Mark Reuss, executive vice president and president, global product group and Cadillac, who began overseeing the brand in June.
Carlisle, previously head of GM Canada, described the four-day conference — split between U.S. and global dealers — as an “important event to start to shift the tone and turn the corner” for Cadillac, which is in year four of a 10-year, $12 billion turnaround plan.
“We want everybody to have a bounce in their step because we’ve got a bright future ahead of us,” Carlisle told Automotive News on Friday. “We brought all the elements together as a confidence builder and to demonstrate that as candidly as we could.”
Carlisle, who declined to discuss specifics of the event, described dealers as “very energetic and excited” about the brand’s plans, including more upbeat and culturally relevant marketing and advertising from Deborah Wahl, who was appointed Cadillac CMO in March.
Eric Sandstrom, operator of Cadillac of Greenwich in Connecticut, said he was “excited about the evolution” of the marketing strategies. Another dealer official in the Midwest who did not want to be identified said the messaging is “turning a very good corner.”
Carlisle said the new messaging will begin in the coming weeks as the XT4 compact crossover begins to arrive in dealerships in numbers.
At the meetings, Cadillac also reviewed tweaks to its 2019 Project Pinnacle dealer plan and announced plans to expand its V-series performance subbrand, starting with the arrival of the CT6-V in the spring.
“The goal was to bring a lot of elements together here and kind of pivot on the XT4 launch to market, a shift in tone and move into the next phase,” Carlisle said. “It’s not important what I feel so much but how the dealers feel.”

Cadillac expects Project Pinnacle to lift brand to record global sales in 2018
http://www.autositenews.com/?p=7113
Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen: "At the end of the day, Project Pinnacle is doing as it has been set up to do." Photo credit: GLENN TRIEST
DETROIT -- Project Pinnacle, Cadillac's overhaul of dealership operations, is working as designed and is expected to help the brand reach record global sales in 2018, according to brand President Johan de Nysschen.
Cadillac's global sales last year were the second-best in its 115-year history. However, domestic sales declined 8 percent during the first iteration of Project Pinnacle in 2017.
The program, which has been revised several times before and since its April launch, has been a contentious issue between Cadillac and many of its dealers -- particularly those with smaller franchises who felt they were being belittled or pushed out of the network .
"At the end of the day, Project Pinnacle is doing as it has been set up to do," de Nysschen said Tuesday during the Automotive World Congress. "Many of our dealers who have embraced the program are delivering an elevated customer experience and seeing the commensurable financial returns."
De Nysschen's comments come as the brand begins the first full sales year of Project Pinnacle. Under the latest modification, the program will weigh customer-satisfaction scores and compliance with brand standards more heavily than sales volumes as "many" dealers have fallen short of their targets.
"The success in the near term is about more than just sales charts," de Nysschen said.
"2017 was a challenging year for the entire U.S. luxury market," he added, citing record levels of incentive spending in the luxury segment.
Cadillac, according to de Nysschen, expects similar challenges this year, until it launches the long-awaited XT4 compact crossover in the fourth quarter -- the first of a slate of new products rolling out through 2021, which GM expects to double Cadillac's profits.
The XT4 is expected to be followed by a three-row crossover and a CT5 sedan that is anticipated to eventually replace the ATS, CTS and XTS. de Nysschen said the small crossover will "trigger the most comprehensive produce offensive in the history of this brand."
By 2022, Cadillac is expected to have four crossovers and only three sedans, plus the next-generation Escalade SUV.
De Nysschen reiterated that the quintessential American brand's growth in China -- its top market for the first time ever in 2017 -- is "fueling" the brand's efforts in the U.S., including brand building to address "legacy issues" of consumers buying Cadillacs based on "the strength of the deals" and not the brand or its products.
"This is a difficult cycle to break," he said, adding that the business practices over time eroded brand perception, dealer profitability and obstructed efforts to deliver compelling products -- all things Project Pinnacle aims to reverse.
Other topics addressed by de Nysschen at the Automotive News World Congress include:
Chief marketing officer search: Cadillac is down to its "final candidates list" to succeed former Cadillac Chief Marketing Officer Uwe Ellinghaus, who resigned at the end of 2017. De Nysschen said there are both internal and external candidates being considered for the position.
He said he does not expect a "vast course change" in its messaging once someone is hired, but it would "be naive" to think that there won't be some "fine tuning."
Technology: Cadillac will "revisit" using new technologies to enhance the dealership experience, likely referring to the use of virtual reality machines and virtual showrooms that Cadillac backed away from as being mandatory for small dealers under Project Pinnacle.
Dealer count: Project Pinnacle does not aim to reduce the count of its dealership network, a main concern for many dealers when the program was first being discussed and launched, according to De Nysschen. He said he expects Cadillac's network of 924 dealers to be around the same level in five years.
EVs: Cadillac is "accelerating" the rollout of its EVs amid support from the Chinese government for all-electric vehicles as well as GM's overall strategy to launch at least 20 new EVs or fuel cell vehicles by 2023.
