They kept the journal bearing CHRA from the IS38 turbocharger and increased the thrust bearings and thrust collars by 2 mm, to match the larger wheels and the performance-oriented nature of this upgrade.

They also increased the turbo’s oil passages by 0.72mm and put the turbo through extensive in-house tests to make sure that it delivers the highest performance at different altitudes and climates. 2. Are you a light sleeper? Sometimes I sleep very lightly, and sometimes I could practically sleep through a nuclear bomb going off. I have no idea why it varies so much.

4. What's the weather like? It's 36°F and humid, with some clouds.

5. Would you rather wear sweats or jeans? Sweats if I'm at home, jeans if I'm out somewhere.

6. When did you last go ice skating? It might have been when I was a kid, but I also have a really hazy memory of being at the ice arena at some point during my very first semester of college, so maybe that was the last time I went skating? I can't remember.

7. Do you ever shop at Hot Topic? Nope.

8. What car do you own/hope to own? I'm already really happy with the two cars my husband and I already own. We have a 2020 VW Tiguan and a 2018 VW GLI.

9. Have you ever spent more than 5 hours on the phone? Once, when my husband and I had been dating for about a month. There was one night where we stayed on the phone til dawn, just talking about so many different things.

10. Where is your cell phone? On the kitchen island.

11. How loud do you play your music? Pretty quietly. I have an injury-induced hearing disorder that makes me painfully sensitive to sounds over 75-80 decibels. Listening to music at that volume or louder makes my ears hurt and makes my hearing distortions get a lot worse.

12. Do you like playing in the snow? I love it.

13. What beach does your family typically visit? The Port Royal beach on Hilton Head Island. We have a family beach villa there.

14. Do you like your name or one of your siblings' names better? Hard to compare which one I like more... I'm female with a female name, he's male with a male name.

16. What was the last restaurant you visited? A Lebanese restaurant, but just for curbside carryout. I haven't been inside a restaurant since prior to the pandemic.

Salon de Chicago, autos et pneus d’hiver

Pas toujours facile de se tenir au courant des nouveautés automobile malgré l’aide de l’Internet. J’ai toujours aimé l’aide que pouvaient apporter les grands salons de l’auto. Après ceux de Detroit et de Montréal, je me suis longtemps fié à celui de Chicago pour me renseigner. Or, depuis les quelques dernières années, le Salon de Chicago a perdu un peu de son lustre malgré le fait qu’il se déroule dans une des plus grandes salles d’exposition du monde, soit la Place McCormick située sur le bord du lac Michigan. Cet endroit est tout simplement immense avec deux grands halls à plafonds très hauts qui peuvent même contenir de petites pistes d’essai. Pas de farce, les visiteurs peuvent prendre place à bord d’autos et de camionnettes, voire même de véhicules tout-terrain et parcourir un petit circuit qui leur donnera une légère idée des capacités du véhicule qu’ils pourraient convoiter.

Cette année, je ne suis pas allé au Salon de Chicago (pourtant réputé pour ses multiples dévoilements de nouvelles camionnettes) et, ma foi, je ne crois pas avoir manqué grand-chose. En fait, il n’y a pas eu de grandes nouveautés du côté des voitures sauf pour la nouvelle berline Legacy de Subaru, un modèle entièrement redessiné et désormais mû par le nouveau moteur à quatre cylindres turbocompressé de 2,0 litres du constructeur japonais. Incidemment, ce renouvellement marque la fin du six cylindres à plat de Subaru. J’ai demandé à des dirigeants de la marque que j’ai récemment rencontrés et ils se sont faits discrets sur l’avenir de ce moteur. J’ai plutôt compris qu’il n’était pas près de revenir…

Toujours du côté des autos, Volkswagen a présenté la version GLI de sa toute récente Jetta ce qui n’en fait pas une grande nouveauté mais une nouvelle finition plus sportive. Mais, vu que le Salon de Chicago doit respecter sa réputation de « camions », soulignons qu’on y présente généralement soit de nouvelles versions de camionnettes (et parfois de camions plus imposants), soit que l’on y annonce d’autres nouveautés à venir. Par exemple, cette année, Ram avait choisi cet évènement pour y annoncer l’arrivée prochaine des versions châssis-cabine commerciales de ses Ram Heavy Duty alors que Chevrolet y présentait « officiellement » ses Silverado HD (que vous avez fort possiblement vus dans un de mes blogues précédents). C’est aussi en marge du Salon de Chicago que Ram a annoncé la nouvelle option du panneau arrière de ses pick-up qui s’ouvrent comme des portières 1/3-2/3. Quant à Ford qui vient de publier les photos de ses Super Duty avec avant retouché, ce constructeur a aussi annoncé l’arrivée éventuelle d’un nouveau moteur V8 à essence de 7,3 litres avec, surprise, culbuteurs en tête (oui, oui, un moteur avec arbre à cames central !). Identifié comme un « big block », les spéculations vont bon train sur l’utilisation possible de ce moteur comme engin de performance pour certaines autos et camionnettes (Mustang? Raptor?) alors, qu’en vérité, il est destiné, au départ, aux Super Duty! Ah oui! N’oublions pas le dévoilement du Toyota Tacoma légèrement redessiné, du Kia Sportage révisé, du Range Rover Evoque aussi révisé, du Qashqai avec calandre redessinée et de la Mazda MX-5 30e Anniversaire…

Les prochains salons à venir sont ceux de Genève et de New York, respectivement en mars et avril. Je ne m’attends pas à trop de dévoilements de voitures abordables et disponibles chez nous de Genève. Toutefois, New York semble nous réserver son lot de surprises. Corvette à moteur central? Ford Bronco? Qui sait? Je tenterai de vous tenir au courant…

Pneus et impressions hivernales

Vu que les nouveautés ne courent pas nécessairement les rues de ces temps-ci, j’en ai profité pour revenir à certains véhicules que j’ai déjà conduits dans le passé mais qui nous reviennent avec de petites améliorations ou encore avec des pneus d’hiver à essayer. J’aurais voulu vous parler du nouveau petit VUS Cadillac XT4 mais, au moment d’en prendre livraison, il a connu certains petits problèmes qui ont dû être corrigés. Ce n’est que partie remise puisque je l’ai réservé pour plus tard.

Pour le moment, j’ai d’abord repris la Volkswagen Jetta, cette fois avec des pneus d’hiver Continental Winter Contact qui, pour une fois, m’ont donné satisfaction malgré la neige abondante qu’ils ont dû affronter. L’auto elle-même a pu se défendre des froids intenses avec des démarrages faciles le matin et un chauffage plus qu’adéquat. La consommation hivernale de cette auto serait plutôt de 11,5 l/100 km alors que j’ai pu faire mieux que 7 L/100 km en été!

J’ai aussi mis la main sur la Subaru Legacy avec moteur à six cylindres à plat qui m’a encore une fois impressionné par sa douceur de roulement et par sa puissance. Petite note négative, je l’ai trouvé un peu « grognon » lorsque je le démarrais les matins les plus froids mais ce comportement se dissipait très rapidement et le moteur retrouvait sa douceur habituelle. Grâce aux pneus Bridgestone Blizzak, cette grande berline à traction intégrale savait se déplacer avec aisance sur les routes enneigées et surtout glacées de la région métropolitaine. La plus grande qualité de cette auto? Son intérieur qui m’a semblé plus vaste que celui de ses concurrentes, les Nissan Altima et Honda Accord (même si le volume intérieur annoncé par les divers constructeurs est relativement semblable !). Son prix? 38 445 $ Sa consommation en hiver ? Quelque 13,2 L/100 km.

Parmi les autres véhicules qui me furent prêtés, il y a eu le petit VUS Lincoln MKC. J’ai déjà utilisé ce luxueux véhicule pour un voyage dans le Maine l’été dernier ce qui m’a incité à le reprendre pour quelques jours en hiver. Dans ce cas, il était équipé de pneus Continental Winter Contact qui, ici, ne m’ont pas impressionné comme sur la Jetta. Il faut dire qu’il y avait beaucoup de gadoue sur les routes ce qui les rend très glissantes pour la majorité des pneus. Puis, les routes et rue plus ou moins bien entretenues de Montréal et de Laval ne m’ont pas facilité les choses. Les nids de poule abondent et j’ai même été victime de l’un d’eux sur le boulevard de La Concorde à Laval, détruisant ainsi le pneu avant droite du MKC. De retour à la maison, j’ai entrepris la désagréable tâche de changer de roue pour celle de secours du petit Lincoln. Croyant que dévisser les écrous de la roue serait très difficile, j’ai pris ma « croix » m’attendant à des efforts surhumains pour les démonter. À ma grande surprise, ils n’ont offert qu’une mince résistance ce qui m’a fait comprendre que ces roues sont montées à l’usine avec un couple (torque) spécifique qui devrait faire de cette opération un travail relativement simple pour tout automobiliste. C’est là que j’en ai déduit que les garagistes et techniciens serrent les écrous beaucoup trop forts lorsqu’ils changent nos roues. Pourquoi ne le font-ils pas avec une clé dynamométrique (torque wrench) et pourquoi les constructeurs n’en affichent-ils pas la puissance requise sur les roues ?

Autre petit point négatif (et celui-ci ne s’applique pas qu’à ce Lincoln), je me demande pourquoi les constructeurs ne dessinent pas les puits des pneus de secours pour qu’ils puissent aussi accepter le pneu original? Prenons, par exemple celui du MKC. Une fois le pneu de secours en place, j’ai dû ranger le pneu avec la crevaison dans le compartiment à bagages (qui n’est pas des plus grands dans ce véhicule car il était trop gros pour le puits. On a souvent critiqué les VUS dont le pneu de secours est fixé à l’arrière à l’extérieur…pourtant, c’est vraiment là qu’il devrait aller! Outre cela, le MKC a été un véhicule d’hiver agréable. Sa ligne reconnaissable est aussi bien exécutée. Il est de conduite agréable (j’ai gardé la fonction Comfort pour mes déplacements urbains) et il représente bien le luxe. J’ai toujours un peu de difficulté à entendre le son d’un quatre cylindres sous le capot d’un Lincoln mais dans le cas du MKC, il faudra s’y faire. C’est pareil pour la concurrence. Quant à sa consommation, je l’ai trouvée un peu élevée. Alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 13,6, mes calculs à la pompe étaient plutôt de 15,6 l/110 km! Un MKC de ce genre vaut environ 58 600 $.

Enfin, j’ai aussi repris l’Infiniti QX50 que j’avais utilisé pour mes déplacements vers Toronto lors du concours de Voiture de l’année de l’AJAC en octobre dernier. Dans le cas de ce petit VUS de luxe (dont la caractéristique principale est ce moteur quatre cylindres à cylindrée variable), il fut aussi efficace que prévu malgré les temps très froids. Équipé, lui aussi, de pneus Blizzak, il n’a pas manqué de motricité ni de freinage. Sa consommation s’est chiffrée à 12,3 l/100 km alors que le prix d’un QX50 est de quelque 60 800 $.

Ouf! Je continue donc de conduire certains véhicules déjà essayés en été (on voit très bien que la consommation hivernale est beaucoup plus importante) alors que j’ajoute de « vraies » nouveautés à mon palmarès. Je vous reviens avec d’autres essais et d’autres nouvelles dans quelques jours.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta Brings Updates to GLI and More

The Volkswagen Jetta was redesigned for the 2019 model year, and carried over mostly unchanged for 2020. The same is largely true for the 2021 model year of this midsize sedan, although a notable update is a new infotainment system in higher trim levels.

What remains the same is the Jetta’s handsome, if not eye-catching, design. The sharp crease just below the belt line adds some character to the flanks, but the ho-hum front end seems designed more to avoid giving offense than it is to inspire. What’s more interesting about the Jetta is that it rides on the well-loved MQB platform—shared with everything from VW’s Golf, GTI, and Atlas to Audi’s A3 and Q3— and also provides owners with more room inside than the last-generation model.

And there’s still no word about the rumored Jetta R, although you can be sure we’ll be the first to tell you about it should it happen.

The regular 2021 Jetta comes in five trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. The Jetta GLI, the sportiest version, comes in two trims: S and Autobahn.

The all-electric e-Golf, which will get discontinued after this generation and replaced by the ID hatchback, is only offered in SE and SEL Premium grades and it now comes standard with the Driver Assistance package, which bundles together adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind sport monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI gets automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert now standard. Like the regular Golf, the GTI receives VW’s newest Car-Net infotainment system as well as standard in-car Wi-Fi capability when you subscribe to a data plan. Two trim levels are offered: the base S and the SE. Formerly the range-topper, the Autobahn trim is now an optional package for the SE and gets you navigation, dual-zone climate control, a Fender audio system, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane keeping assist. The Golf R wasn’t listed on the rundown, and we think it may be a carryover. Earlier this year, Volkswagen announced the end of production for the Golf SportWagen and Alltrack, both of which will be replaced by small crossovers.

Other models in the Volkswagen lineup receive modest changes for 2020. The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta now offers a Cold Weather package for the SE and SE R-Line trims, adding a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, heated washer nozzles, and remote start. SEL models now come standard with 17-inch alloy wheels. The Jetta GLI loses the 35th Anniversary trim, which was a limited-run model, leaving the S and Autobahn as the only two variants available. Adaptive dampers and wireless charging now come standard on the Jetta GLI Autobahn.

Both the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon and Passat are all-new. The 2020 Passat loses the V-6 option and will launch solely with an upgraded 2.0-liter turbo-four and an updated multimedia system.
