looking at pictures of the city at night makes my mouth taste like danger and my vision swim with the static feeling of the past. cigarette smoke makes my eyes water and clogs up my sinuses with hazy, half-formed memories of better days.

I’m leaving for college soon, and I’m leaving my dog behind. everyone says it’s for the best, but I still can’t help but feel a little bad. he’s a mean thing, jumpy and violent when provoked, and the only person he really likes is me.

I think, when he met me, he could smell the past on me. wafting off of me like the stink of a joint, filling him with understanding. I was the only person he would let put a collar on him. to this day, I have no idea why he tolerated it, why he didn’t bolt like he did with everyone else; perhaps he could smell the suffering I labored to keep underneath my skin. I wonder if it smelled like sex.

but, when I put the collar on him, my hands were gentle. and I coaxed him into believing others’ hands were gentle, too, and he let them put the collar on him, too.

lately, though, like he can sense a heaviness in the air, he presses his neck to the wall when I try to clip the thing on. not afraid but stubborn and rooted nonetheless. I have to force him into it, gently prying him toward me to loop the collar around his neck, and the action makes my mouth taste like cotton.

distantly, I wonder if this is how he felt when he saw me, freshly broken and full of hot rage and not enough tears to quell the hatred in my heart.

I kiss the top of my dog’s head and he noses at my chin and I wonder if this was how she felt when she first saw me, stare a thousand-miles long and mouth so stiff with cold that I could barely move it to speak. I hold my dog a little tighter. I wonder.

I wonder if I still smell like suffering, to him.

01/2025

Five years later and I don't spend my days scrolling through the wet cityscapes that Pinterest shows me, anymore. Instead, I weave my fingers together like chain-links on a fence, and I hum to myself in the melody of the future.

My dog knows not to expect me for long. I come home in a flurry of chaos and excitement, and he spends a-month-and-change splayed out on my lap, warm and content, with my hand buried in his soft fur.

And I say, you want a walk? And he prances across the smooth wood floor to the door, wiggling, tongue lolling. He still flinches when I come at him with the leash a hair too fast; but with a soothing touch, and a calm word, the excitement at the prospect of a walk becomes far more important than his remembered fear.

He whines when I stay downstairs too long, and he yips when he wants me to play chase, and I laugh and I run until his old bones get worn out. And then we sit, breathing in tandem, and he presses his little face into the soft pouch of my stomach, and he hides from the world in the darkness of my safe embrace.

And it's funny. Because the smell of suffering and sex and fear must be so far away from all of this; my coarse hands are clean of blood, my own or otherwise. He gnaws playfully at my fingers like a puppy, and he is losing his teeth as he gets old, and he has no idea the kind of pain that used to be etched into my heartlines.

Or maybe he does, but it doesn't matter anymore; it's just me and him, and we are content, and there are no monsters here, not even in our dreams.

He still flinches when the doors slam and he barks when there are strangers in the house. And I still simper and smile when I shouldn't, and I still shake late into the night, not making eye contact with the shadows in the corners of my bedroom,

but mostly, I've forgotten what suffering smells like. Mostly, I sit with my face tilted towards the sun, and I remember that people are gentle.

i love your fourth of july comics every year but this years feels extremely optimistic about biden’s abilities in the face of him letting roe get overturned and funding a gen*cide at worst or letting it happen at best by taking the bare minimum of regulatory action… i mean can he really be trusted at all anymore to do the right thing or act in line with the people’s demands? and how do we know the people behind project 2025 won’t just rig the election again to get in under false pretenses?

Hihi! Thank you for reading and enjoying my July 4th comics every year! I am in a non-US airport en route to a month-long trip in a place with sketchy internet, so sorry in advance for sloppiness in my response (and potentially going radio silent).

But:

I don't think he "let" Roe get overturned, since that was the Supreme Court's overwhelming conservative majority, which really started with Mitch McConnell refusing to approve Obama's appointee and forcing it into a 2016 election issue. The fact that Trump got to appoint 3 Supreme Court Justices is what got us here.

Re: Biden and the Israel/Hamas war ... on the one hand, there's definitely more that he could have done, but on the other hand, they are a whole other country over there. It's Hamas that initiated the Oct 7 attacks and took the hostages. It's Netanyahu and his right-wing government who decided to retaliate to such extreme extent. Biden can talk about how he would really like Netanyahu to stop fighting and step down, but at the end of the day that's not his call, any more than he can stop the Sudan fighting that is near-genocidal either.

So, to come to your question #1: "Can he really be trusted at all anymore to do the right thing or act in line with the people’s demands"?

For me, it's a resounding YES. Guyz, he has passed so much good domestic policies. My spouse works in green energy and the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act halved his anxiety and gave him legitimate hope. The tumblr post I linked to in my comic has links to many of the other great things that Biden has done. Tbh I voted for him in 2020 because "a moldy onion is still better than Trump", and I've been pleasantly surprised. Like how he tried to cancel student loans, the Supreme Court overturned it, and then he came back 6 months later with a different way to do it that didn't lead to a court challenge.

Is he perfect? Hell no. There's tons of stuff that I wish he did more about, or he went further on, but also he's just one guy heading one branch of government who is heading into an election year. (Just like FDR promising not joining WWII, while behind the scenes doing all the Lend-Lease Act stuff). And "the people" have lots of demands, many of them conflicting.

I'd also like to push at the unspoken part of your question... "Can he really be trusted to do the right thing..." compared to whom? Because right now the answer is "compared to Trump." And compared to Trump... I don't even trust Trump to respect the results of a legitimate election. Heck, he might just take his favorite state secrets, sell them to the highest bidder (or just show them off to someone for funzies), and then claim Presidential immunity. A decent Democrat who got stuff done vs someone who probably wants to pardon himself and all his friends and do Project 2025 stuff is not even on the same level. (Do I wish that there was a viable Democratic alternative to Biden? Sure! But who?) Heck, at this point -- imagine if it's Kamala Harris vs. Trump. Who would you vote for?

We don't. But also what can we do besides showing up to vote?

Actually, I need bullet points for this:

The 2022 midterm elections brought in fewer-than-expected election-deniers into crucial electoral offices at the state level, which means that hopefully most state electoral boards will continue to have integrity

Yes, voting is harder but at least we can still vote. So it's about getting out there and getting your vote counted. For some states, it involves waiting in 8 hour lines. For some states, it involves bringing 2 forms of ID. Document. Track. Make sure it's dropped off in a real ballot box and not a fake one. Don't believe messaging that the voting is happening on a different day or location, etc.

A 50.1% majority is easily challenged. A 55% majority, less so. Which means getting people out to vote.

The more people know about and think about the reality of a second Trump term (versus being disappointed by a Biden term), the more they will be motivated to vote against Trump.

Finally, let's be real here: I'm braced for a 2nd Trump term. That said:

I'm still going to go and vote for Biden, because the only way to prevent a 2nd Trump term is to vote.

A Trump term where either the House or Senate is controlled by the Democrats will be *very* different from a clean Republican sweep.

Even with a clean Republican sweep on the federal level, States have so much more power now, and voting the state level stuff will help shore up Democratic goals for the future. States get to draw voting districts however they want. States get to decide on abortion policies. If you live in a deep Red state, there still might be things to vote for that make it easier to live in now, and turn it purple a few elections down the line.

So at the end of the day, it's "Vote AND". Vote and keep living your best life. Vote and tell others about Project 2025. Vote and have hope. Even if Trump wins, at least you'll have voted against him. Vote and stay to build up a progressive wave for the next election.

I had always been inconsistent with posting since I started digital art in 2020, but I really locked in the second half of this year. Part of that is bc of all the support I’ve received.

I’m not always able to respond, but I do look at every comment and hashtag. It’s bc of the kindness (and often funny things) everyone has left under my posts that have helped keep me motivated to share as much art as I can possible create.

Thank you to everyone who’s followed my art journey this year! Whether it was years ago, months ago, or even today when you’ve found me, I’m very grateful.

Here’s to another year of more artwork. I hope to keep seeing you all in 2025 💗

"But it's impractical!" Aka, Why I hate most fem fortress designs

A lot of the time, I'm sure many have come across comments like this:

"Fem fortress but they all look the same, just with boobs"

"Fem scout would never wear a skirt! It's impractical!"

To be honest, I think these kinds of comments come off as mysogynistic, because it is still policing what women wear. The tf2 mercs can wear silly cosmetics, many of which are even less practical, but when femscout wears a skirt or fem engie has a beehive and makeup, it's considered impractical because woman. I feel like the tf2 fandom has a problem with a lot of fem merc designs that arent masc. In general, masculinity is praised in society while feminity is disliked. Its why conservatives throw a hissy fit when a man wears a dress. This most likely comes from the idea that any display of feminity is seen as weak. Fem engineer builds stuff and does masc things, so she has to be a masc woman by default. If any of the fem mercs dress feminine, it obviously for the male gaze. While this seems like it is breaking gender roles, its still perpetuating stereotypes - that feminine people cant do things like shoot guns or throw piss at people or build machines.

There is a difference, though. The fempyro mod and femscout mods are examples of a character designed for the male gaze, as I believe the mods were made by men, are mostly used by men, and are in a game that is mostly played by men. They don't take into account what women wore during tf2s time, instead just slap a bow onto scouts hat or put pyro into some catsuit despite pyros gender being a mystery. But dressing feminine doesnt always mean its for the male gaze. Many women dress feminine for themselves. A lot of the tf2 fem concept art is an example of how you can make feminine women while still keeping them unique and not male gaze-y

Another complaint I have is many fem fortress designs look so modernized. For example, the fanon femscout design looks like someone you'd see jogging at the gym in 2025, not like a sporty girl from 1968.

Back then, ponytails were more formal I think. Ive seen ponytails in makeup ads and things from the time but not in sports photos. So fem scout would most likely have short, bobbed hair. It just annoys me to hell and back when I see people reject research and creativity just to use the same cookie cutter fem scout design because shes "hot."

Of course, I have no problem with fem fortress designs that are masc! My fem sniper is a butch. But remember, masc women didn't dress the same way they do in 2020! Even women wearing pants outside of manual labor jobs at the time was considered very masculine. The 60s spy theme is what makes tf2 stand out and the fanon fem fortress dont have the same charm.

Tldr; Fem mercs can wear a skirt, saying they can't is still policing what women wear. Hyper feminine and hyper masculine women are both looked down upon. Also fem fortress artists should have more fun with the time period.
