Future Trucks and Minivans: Coming Soon
Pickup trucks are still the best-selling vehicles in America. Millions and millions sell every year, for moving furniture, hauling construction gear, or towing your boat to the river. Throw in higher profit margins than SUVs or cars, and you have a vehicle segment the automakers will always covet and want to expand. A ton (or half-ton) of redesigned trucks have hit the market in the past few years, but there are still more to come in this highly competitive segment.
Meanwhile, minivans may still be fighting to shed their image of parental capitulation, but it’s a fiercely fought segment all the same. We may not be buying as many crumb cruncher carriers as we used to, but when we do, we want them to be the absolute pinnacle of family transportation. So work continues to make them more comfortable, more functional, and more kid-friendly than ever.
Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon
What’s New: Updated exterior designs are in store for the refreshed trucks. The Colorado’s previous base trim has been discontinued, making the Work Truck the new entry model and raising the truck’s starting price. On the Canyon, the AT4 trim replaces the All Terrain, and the Denali receives minor updates, including a new grille design and interior color theme.
What’s Not: Mechanical bits stay the same. Engine options will continue to include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V-6, and a 2.8-liter turbodiesel.
When: Late Spring 2020
How Much: $26,395
Toyota Sienna
What’s New: The 2021 Toyota Sienna marks the model’s first redesign in a decade. Resting on a variant of the Toyota New Global Architecture TNGA-K platform that also underpins the likes of the Toyota Camry sedan and Highlander crossover SUV, the fourth-generation Sienna trades its predecessor’s upright styling and 296-horsepower V-6 engine for lower-slung looks and a standard hybrid powertrain that relies on a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to produce 243 hp. A third motor mounts to the rear axle on all-wheel-drive models. Yep, it’s hybrid only, which will mean 33 mpg fuel economy in the combined cycle, better than the Chrysler Pacifica minivan, and far better than the gas-only minivan pack. Standard safety and convenience items include automatic front braking with pedestrian protection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane centering. Along with its polarizingly muscular styling, the latest Sienna welcomes available niceties like a vacuum cleaner, a refrigerator, kick-activated sliding doors, and second-row “Super Long Slide” bucket seats with 25 inches of fore-and-aft travel.
What’s Not: Save for its name and minivan body style, the 2021 Sienna shares little else with its forebear.
When: Late 2020
How Much: $35,000 (est.)
Chrysler Pacifica
What’s New: A new all-wheel-drive option, Pinnacle trim level, front and rear styling revisions, and a major upgrade to the speed and capability of the Uconnect system highlight this midcycle refresh. Available only on gas models, the AWD system preserves Stow ’N Go seating and can idle the driveshaft to save fuel. Pinnacle models get opulent quilted leather seats and pillows, a suede headliner, and platinum chrome exterior trim. Uconnect 5.0 is five times faster and features Alexa integration plus a higher-resolution 10.1-inch screen that can mirror two Android or Apple phones.
What’s Not: The powertrains remain the same, as does styling on lower-spec Voyager models, which replace the Dodge Grand Caravan.
When: Fall 2020
How Much: $35,500–$52,000 (est)
Honda Odyssey
What’s New: You’ll see numerous safety, technology, and design upgrades. With a redesigned front fascia, grille, and new housings for the foglights, the Odyssey is receiving a pretty extensive midcycle upgrade. The second-row seats can now fold flat (a packaging boo-boo now fixed), allowing more room for larger objects. The Odyssey is also getting a new rear-seat reminder that works with the CabinWatch camera to alert drivers what still resides behind them when they turn off the engine. As with all recently updated Hondas, Honda Sensing is standard on all 2021 Odysseys.
What’s Not: The engine, platform, and infotainment system are the same. All Odysseys will continue to be powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 with 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic will continue to sFuture Trucks and Minivans coming soon concept carsend power to the front wheels.

Here’s a look at our top golf equipment stories of 2019
The 9 most interesting golf equipment stories of 2019
Any time a year comes to its conclusion it offers the opportunity to reflect on what occurred over the preceding 12 months. As it relates to the golf equipment scene on the professional tours, 2019 had no shortage of newsworthy stories. Hot drivers and the methods used to test them continued to be a controversial topic, specifically at the Open Championship where there was a visible split between some tour players and the governing bodies over the protocols used. Spicy drivers, however, were only a fraction of the equipment news. Players breaking clubs, losing clubs, using too many golf balls or not having enough of them caused confusion and consternation among those involved. And then there were the numerous equipment escapades of the “Golf Scientist,” Bryson DeChambeau. With that, here’s a look at our top golf equipment stories of 2019.
Driver testing at the Open Championship Driver testing is a behind-the-scenes process that is usually a non-event. That changed when a handful of the 30 players who had their clubs tested prior to the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in July saw some fail the test. Among those players was Xander Schauffele, who went public with his displeasure at the process. Schauffele’s beef that it was selective and needed more discretion was legitimate, but the testing brought to light the fact that some drivers being used on tour that were originally “legal” were unintentionally becoming nonconforming over time due to usage. Soon thereafter the PGA Tour implemented mandatory driver testing at several events, with a few drivers caught speeding at the Safeway Open. To what extent there is an issue remains to be seen, but it’s a story to follow in 2020.
Bryson DeChambeau’s many changes You can’t have a list of top equipment stories without Bryson DeChambeau. Normally known for having all his irons the length of a 7-iron, DeChambeau became more focused on other aspects of his equipment in 2019. At the WGC-Mexico Championship, DeChambeau changed to Bridgestone’s Tour B XS ball and waxed on about the effect of atmospheric conditions on a golf ball. Prior to the Masters, he changed all the shafts in his irons and wedges. Later in the year, at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, he put graphite shafts in all 14 clubs, which is believed to be a first for a PGA Tour player. Finally, at the Hero World Challenge, DeChambeau put into play a 4.8-degree driver. And what about the One Length irons? They hardly got a mention with everything else going on.

Eddie Pepperell running out of golf balls OK, we’ve all been there. Out on the course enduring a rough patch and worrying about running out of ammo. Heck, Tiger Woods nearly did it at the 2000 U.S. Open. Unfortunately for Eddie Pepperell, the worst fears actually came true during the third round of the Turkish Airlines Open in November. In rapid fashion, Pepperell launched balls into a pond until his bag was empty, and he was ultimately disqualified. Said playing companion Martin Kaymer, “Eddie hit his shots to the green, then came over to tell us he had run out of balls. He did not ask if he could borrow one [allowable if the same model]. It did not look like he wanted to play. He did not putt with his putter on the third hole; he putted with a wedge. So there was a lot happening. I have never seen anything like that before. I only watched it on television, in ‘Tin Cup.’ This is the first time I have seen it live.” Us, too.
RELATED: The 21 (yes, 21!) most painful rules incidents of 2019
Russell Henley runs afoul of the one-ball rule While Pepperell was DQ’d for not having enough golf balls, Russell Henley got an eight-stroke penalty for using too many. After the second round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic in October, Henley dug into his bag to get a few balls to sign and hand out to fans. In doing so, he noticed he had accidentally used a ball other than a Titleist Pro V1x during his round—a no-no under the PGA Tour’s one-ball rule that requires a player use the same make and model of ball throughout a round. Henley went to a rules official and explained he had used the different ball for four holes. The penalty: two strokes for each hole, turning his 69 into a 77 and a missed cut.
Steve Stricker’s venerable sticks, unusual endorsement deal Steve Stricker went back in time—in golf equipment terms, way back in time—in putting his old Titleist 755 Forged irons, a set that debuted in 2006, in the bag at the Memorial. Stricker used the clubs a few weeks later to win the U.S. Senior Open, saying, “I’ve been trying to find some clubs and equipment that I like, and so I went back to an old set that feels really good. That’s part of it, too, I think. I’m swinging at it a little bit more confidently, feeling good with what I have in my hand.” Stricker’s putter is a golf artifact as well, an Odyssey White Hot 2 he first played at the 2006 Shell Houston Open. Two days after winning the Senior Open, Stricker signed one of the most unusual endorsement deals in golf with Odyssey. The pact called for no signage on his hat, bag or anywhere for that matter. Just that he continue to use a putter nearly 15 years old, which is right up his alley.

Harold Varner busted for assembling his driver on course Harold Varner’s Players Championship got off to a rough start when, prior to his opening round, his driver cracked on the practice range. As such, Varner started his round with 13 clubs and intended to have another driver brought out to him, allowable under the rules. But Varner wanted to use the same shaft that was in his gamer. This too is allowable so long as the assembly of the club takes place off the course. That’s where things went wrong. After leaving the shaft back at the tee, hoping to have his agent pick it up and assemble the club before bringing it out to him, a walking scorer took the shaft out to Varner on the course. When the driver head was brought out, too, the club was assembled on the course in violation of the rule, costing Varner a two-shot penalty.

Tommy Fleetwod’s eBay bargain putter Like most golfers going through a rough stretch on the greens, Tommy Fleetwood was ready for a putter change at the Omega European Masters in September. The new putter, however, turned out to be an old putter that his caddie, Ian Finnis, purchased off eBay for £90 ($109) in January. It was a birthday gift for Fleetwood, who used a similar model growing up. Fleetwood put the Odyssey DFX 2-Ball Blade in play and needed just 21 putts in the opening round. He continued to play well the rest of the week, finishing T-8 to earn the equivalent of £45,674—a pretty good return on Finnis’ original investment.

Patrick Reed snapping wedge over his knee at the U.S. Open Varner’s broken driver was an accident. Patrick Reed’s demolition of a wedge at the U.S. Open was intentional for all the world to see. On the final hole of his second round at Pebble Beach, Reed hit a pitch shot long from behind the green then flubbed his next shot. That’s when Reed went full Bo Jackson (or Henrik Stenson) and snapped the shaft of the wedge over his knee. Reed somehow went on to get the next shot close enough to make the putt for double bogey and make the cut, but he needed a new wedge for the weekend.

Lost clubs of LPGA Tour players It was a rough year for the transport of clubs used by LPGA Tour players. In February, en route to the Honda LPGA in Thailand, a number of players including Paula Creamer, Sandra Gal, Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Brittany Lincicome had their sticks fail to get to their destination on a Cathay Pacific flight. In March, In-Kyung Kim learned her missing clubs were actually up for sale on eBay after supposedly being lost on an American Airlines flight. In July, Ryann O’Toole’s clubs failed to make it to France for the Evian Championship. When pleading her case to a British Airways agent, the agent ignorantly asked, “Can’t you just use a rental set?” And in September, two Solheim Cup players, Angel Yin and Shadoff (tough year for her) had airlines lose their fully-loaded travel bags. Luckily all the players were eventually reunited with their clubs.

2021 Toyota Sienna
It looks like we’ve been writing “the Toyota Sienna enters yet another year without a complete redesign” permanently at this moment. The current generation dates back to 2011 and is continuing into year ten as we information in our 2020 Toyota Sienna review. Now, there was a significant overhaul of its interior and structure for 2015, while the powertrain was replaced two years later on, and other essential updates to its feature material made afterward. In the meantime, however, the Kia Sedona and Honda Odyssey were completely revamped, and the Chrysler Pacifica became a thing. The Nissan Quest was reborn and died once again. Nobody seemed to see.
2021 Toyota Sienna Design
Anyhow, the Toyota Sienna is incredibly long in the tooth. However, these fresh spy images would suggest it’s finally going to see the dental expert. That’s how that metaphor works, right? Though covered in massive black plastic, this is most absolutely not yet another warmed-over version of the existing van. Note the door mirrors migrating to the doors and the little quarter window above it now living nearby to the main front side window instead of within the A-pillar. The rear quarter likewise appears quite different, possibly suggesting some rising element, not unlike the Lexus RX. That little camouflage might also be remaining from an old RX test vehicle being used to throw us off. However, it appears likely that Toyota would try to make that area more interesting provided its new excessive styling in addition to what was made with the past two Honda Odysseys.

The huge wheels, lower grille mesh and flared rocker panels recommend that this particular next-generation Sienna is a SE, the “sportier” trim level that boasts tighter suspension and guiding tuning (the present version is shown above). Just like it finished with the current redesign Camry and Avalon, it appears affordable to assume that the dynamic gap in between the Sienna’s LE and SE trim levels would narrow offered the managing improvements fundamental to Toyota’s TNG platform that surely underpins its new minivan.
2021 Toyota Sienna Engine
Despite the new platform, we expect the existing powertrain to rollover mainly the same apart from possibly a minor power bump. We also would not be amazed to see a new Sienna Hybrid, as many TNG cars are available as hybrids. Would it be a plug-in as the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid is? That’s doubtful.
2021 Toyota Sienna Debut
Provided how thoroughly covered this test vehicle is, it appears like the next-generation Sienna is close to conclusion. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November and even earlier. Sales most likely would not be too long after. That would help discuss why the 2020 Sienna was announced so early.

#itsvantime: The Best 8-Passenger Vans for 2020
No vehicle can do it like vans can. They’re spacious, comfortable, versatile, and might just be the best family cars. True, they have something of an image problem, which has helped give rise to the plethora of 8-seat crossovers and three-row SUVs available today. Subsequently, sadly, minivans are a breed approaching extinction. But drivers with discerning taste can look past the stereotypes and appreciate minivans for their style, practicality, and low-key coolness. There aren’t many left to choose from, but these are the best 8-passenger minivans on sale in 2020.
2020 Kia Sedona
Is the Kia Sedona the most stylish 8-seat van out there? One of our favorite minivans on the market, the Sedona won a five-way minivan comparison test, and we kept one in our long-term test fleet for a year. Its 3.3-liter V-6 engine makes 276 hp 248 lb-ft of torque, and it’s a smooth, quiet cruiser on the highway and around town. Front seat occupants will appreciate the infotainment system’s intuitive ease of use, as well as optional heated and cooled seats. The reconfigurable seats in the second and third row can be quickly folded away, opening up to 142 cubic feet of cargo space. With looks and features like these, the Sedona isn’t just for busy parents—it’s a crossover alternative for any driver seeking a combo of space and style.
2020 Toyota Sienna
This generation of Toyota Sienna has been sold since 2010. Back then, it was a comparison test winner, but today it feels its age despite a recent refresh. Still, some features keep it a compelling option among 8-passenger vans. It’s pretty powerful; its 3.5-liter V-6 makes a tire-spinning 296 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. The Sienna is also the only 2020 minivan available with all-wheel drive, and good braking performance improves confidence. Interior volume is ample; most adults will fit comfortably in any row. Large windows add to the impression of space, which, with the available dual moonroof setup, helps passengers not feel squeezed in. Its impressive drivetrain and capacity keep the Sienna an 8-passenger van worth consideration, but technology upgrades—smartphone integration, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and a larger infotainment screen—would make it more competitive.
2020 Honda Odyssey
Honda knows things can get rowdy in a van full of kids, so it’s packed the Odyssey with features to help everyone aboard stay sane and safe. Drivers can keep an eye on back-seat shenanigans with the interior camera, and project their voice through the rear speakers or connected wireless headphones. There’s an optional 10.2-inch rear-seat display for watching movies, plus an app that shows the trip ahead to answer the question “are we there yet?” A stroke of van genius was realized in the built-in vacuum cleaner, perfect for sucking up spilled snacks. The Odyssey’s 3.5-liter V-6 and 10-speed automatic transmission provide solid performance and fuel economy, and ride quality melds stability and agility. Reconfigurable middle-row seats allow for a 7-seat setup with captain’s chairs, or a bench that lets 8 people ride along. However, they don’t easily fold away for loading cargo. Those and somewhat busy styling aside, the 2020 Honda Odyssey is a great 8-passenger minivan.
2020 Chrysler Pacifica
We extolled the virtues of vanning over the year we spent with the Chrysler Pacifica. The available stowable middle-row seats are a boon to practicality, helping to open up 140.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The Pacifica is comfortable and easy to get in and out of thanks to the wide-opening sliding rear doors. It features Chrysler’s slick and responsive Uconnect infotainment system, and 8 USB ports to keep everyone’s devices juiced up. Though it’s no sport sedan substitute, the Pacifica has enjoyably car-like handling, with confident cornering and a well-controlled chassis. What’s more, for 2020 it’s the only plug-in hybrid minivan, allowing up to 33 miles of all-electric driving or 566 miles between gasoline refills. Among vans that can hold 8 passengers, the Pacifica brims with near-luxury appointments. It’s a nice vehicle no matter what it’s compared to.
2020 Chrysler Voyager
Essentially an entry-level Pacifica, the Chrysler Voyager gives 2020 8-seat minivan shoppers a value-oriented option that’s light on luxury. Seats are cloth with manual adjustments, there’s less chrome trim, steel wheels are standard, headlights lose their LEDs, and the interior has fewer premium appointments. It’s not bare-bones, though. The infotainment system features smartphone integration, and there’s a host of driver safety aids like blind spot monitors and rear parking assistance available. As a van with 8 seats, the Voyager has it where it counts, featuring tons of storage space and versatile seating arrangements.
2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris
While the Metris is a Mercedes minivan, it’s not exactly the Mercedes of minivans. Originally designed for commercial duty, the Metris offers ample room for 8 passengers—but not a ton else. Luxuries are few; leather trim and power-operated side doors are optional. The cabin is loud and boomy, seats are upright and have limited adjustability, and the outdated infotainment system runs on a tiny display. That said, safety tech like forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, and automated parking assist is available. The Metris is rear-wheel-drive and its 208-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 is relatively smooth, but nowhere near as powerful as competitors’ V-6 engines. Built for work first and foremost, the Metris offers a mix of capability and capacity at the expense of upscale comfort.
