Best Truck for Snow Plowing
If you aim to get either a clean driveway or start a snow plowing business, a plow on a truck is your best option. Don’t think it would be easy, as not all trucks are equal.
Tumblr media
And it’s a challenge to find the Best Truck for Snow Plowing through hundreds of contenders. A quick peek, Ford F-150 is the best overall truck without the factory plow package. Its massive V6 engine and roaring 375 HP make snowplowing a child’s play.
That said, in this article, I will discuss more of the widely held trucks with their best features. For a deeper understanding, you will also find a comprehensive buying guide at the end.
1. Ford F-150 (2020)
Ford F-150 is one of the most popular full-size pickups not just in the US but in the whole world. This truck is very versatile and powerful for any work including snow plowing. The Ford F-150 gives you the ultimate freedom of work and play without compromise.
The main reason behind this much popularity partly comes from the military-grade build. High strength alloy body and steel frame last longer than usual.
Every pickup truck’s performance lies in the engine performance. The greater the engine power the more it can do on the field. With a V6 engine and 375 HP capabilities, the pickup is ready to face anything.
It is very rare to see factory-ready pickup trucks on the market. Here Ford taking a different approach to fulfill plow needs with an add-on package. It means if you want one, you can surely have one from the manufacturer.
Another great feature of this beast pickup is plow mounting capacity. You can easily attach up to 500 lbs. plow blade. That feature alone makes this one of the best pickup truck for snow plowing.
2. Dodge Ram 1500 (2020)
Speaking of Dodge, you will find that very few people have any issue with this full-sized pickup. It seems the manufacturer of this amazing brand takes good care of the customer. They made this possible by providing the best plowing truck and after-sales service.
This capable pickup truck was originally made for dominating the Rocky Mountains. It would be no surprise to see this pickup prevailing on snowy streets. All thanks to its 3.6-liter V6 engine that can put out 305 HP of raw power with just a press of a pedal.
Unfortunately, the Ram 1500 model doesn’t come with a factory-ready plow kit. But not to worry as most plow tools will have the mounting kit for this particular model. You just have to contact your plow manufacturer to provide the specific mounting kit.
The new Ram 1500 2020 comes with a lot of modern technology and features. It would be a shame if I don’t mention the remarkable fuel efficiency of this truck. It’s 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Now you tell me how great it is.
If you are planning on plowing snow with pickup trucks, it should have the necessary strength. Otherwise, the stress of snow and the plow blade will wear your front end. With the galvanized steel and aluminum exterior, you can do your work carefree.
3. GMC Sierra 1500 (2020)
GMC is by far the best heavy-duty truck for snow plowing in the industry. Well, there are a few key features to back that claim. One of them is their premium package for the plow kit. This package alone can serve your plowing need without third-party intervention.
This might not seem very appealing at first but think again. A plow kit that has an electric controller, needs to connect with the vehicle’s power system. If you do it manually that means a lot of work. Luckily it’s so easy on the Sierra 1500 due to the improved quick plug-in option.
Individuals doing regular plow jobs sometimes face a problem with a truck bumper. It scratches a lot with the plow blade and the mounting bars. The GMC has a special mounting arrangement in front of the vehicle to prevent unwanted scratches. The strong bumper also helps to maintain its new look.
Ever feel helpless in the event of heavy snowfall? It’s understandable to overwhelm by a thick snow pile in front of your driveway. But if you own a Sierra you don’t need to worry. The massive 4.3L engine with 305HP is more than capable for any snow operation.
It’s not uncommon to get stuck in the snow pile on an unlucky day. Nevertheless, luck has nothing to do with it as the snow tire is a bit different. More surface cover normally prevents unnecessary slip. Therefore 17-inch large tire does assist to keep your tires running.
4. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2020)
Generally, snow plowing operation is not possible on all pickup trucks. The truck needs to be strong and powerful so the plow blade and the snow move easily. Silverado 1500 is a formidable 4 wheel-drive vehicle aims to tackle any tough work.
Vehicle alternator handles electrical need when there is a growing demand. Such a process includes various components like headlights, AC, and fuel pumps.
In some case adding a plow kit drastically impact alternator performance if it isn’t a high capacity alternator. With Chevy’s 170 amp alternator underperformance will be a thing of the past.
While covering a deep snow-filled area, it’s likely to get your transmission heated up pretty quickly. Here transmission oil works as the heat dissipating agent. So to make the transmission work properly, its improved oil coolers work like a charm.
Along with all the latest features and technology, this truck has also an extra sitting option. So, apart from its unparalleled plowing capacity, it’s a good option for going out with friends and family too. But the unfortunate thing with the extended cab model is the manufacturer doesn’t offer any plowing package.
The truck comes with 6 different engine options to choose from. If you are on a tight budget you can go for a V6 engine that provides 300 pounds of torque power. That’s comparatively enough for residential snow clearing.
5. Toyota Tacoma (2020)
Do you know this specific model of Toyota Tacoma is from the US? Yes! The Tacoma is specially made for US citizens curating their need for power and performance. And all the features suggest this model as the best compact truck for snow plowing.
Pick up owner often have a question about suspension while plowing snow. They fear the plow blade will damage their suspension. In most cases this is true. But Tacoma isn’t just an average truck with generic suspension. It’s more sturdy and durable for any intense task like a snowplow.
I cannot stretch enough how important the engine power is when it comes to snow plowing. You will be pushing and scraping a huge pile of snow on regular basis. A weak engine will have a hard time moving snow. The latest V6 engine and 300HP will make sure you have all power you need.
This is just another way to show you how versatile the Tacoma. From the spec sheet, we see it has 6800 pounds of towing capacity. If we put a plowing blade in front of this truck, it will crush snow like a bulldozer.
Tire traction is a key feature of a pickup truck for running on a snowy surface. The 16” all Terrain tire and pronounced traction of Tacoma comes in handy in this regard.

How Much Does Detailing Increase The Value Of Your Car?
We all know that the better shape a car is in, the more it is worth. Whether you go to trade in your car or sell it privately, a car that has been well maintained is going to earn you top dollar. When people sell a car, they tend to focus on the mechanical aspects of the vehicle, and perhaps rightly so; a car that will not start is not going to fetch a high asking price. But what about the appearance and aesthetic side to your vehicle? Maybe you run the car through a car wash (learn why that is a terrible idea here) and give it a quick vacuum, but that’s usually it for the average seller. What if you were to detail your car prior to selling it? Detailing is certainly going to be more expensive than a quick car wash, but is it worth it? That is what we are here to find out. Let’s see what the numbers have to say.
Kelly Blue Book Value
For this experiment, we will be using Kelly Blue Book’s (KBB’s) ‘What is my car worth’[1] calculator as well as KBB’s ‘What is my car’s condition’ assessment.[2] Many people think their car is not that bad. As detailers we hear it all the time: “Oh it just needs a quick wipe down, the interior is in great shape,” or “I wash it regularly, it just needs a quick buff and wax.” Meanwhile, it takes a detailer 12 hours to bring the car that wasn’t ‘that bad’ up to a professional standard. So, let’s look at KBB’s condition quiz and see what kind of condition our hypothetical car is in.
Aesthetic Problems Only
For this experiment, we are only concerned with finding out if detailing can raise my vehicle’s value and if so, by how much. KBB has various values of fair, good, very good, and excellent with most vehicles falling into the good category. So, we are going to set all aspects of the car to perfect condition beside just two factors. We will set paint and body work to have minor scratches. Not even major scratches, chips, dents, or anything like that, just some minor repairable scratches. As for the second factor we will be altering, we are going to change interior upholstery to be a little stained or faded or worn down. Now if everything else was perfect on the vehicle (never had any bodywork performed, no defects in the windshield, wheels are flawless, there is no odor in the car, all electronics work, no problems with engine and transmission, A/C works great, brakes and tires are like new) most of us would say that the vehicle sounds like it is in incredible condition. But with the blemishes of minor scratching on the paintwork and some faded interior, KBB gives us a rating of just ‘good.’
Wide Range of Vehicles
At this point, many of us would just sell the car and get whatever we can for it, right? But what if you got rid of those minor scratches and interior stains. What would that do for your value? Well, let’s take a look. We analyzed some of the most popular vehicles in America.[3] Our lineup includes: Ford 150, Chevy Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Tesla Model 3, Lexus RX, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, Lincoln Navigator, and Toyota Camry. This list gives us a good range of vehicles in different categories from trucks, to crossovers, to sedans, from different manufactures, and different price points as well. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, the average person drives around 13,500 miles every year.[4] That number is probably a little lower in 2020, nevertheless that number will be our average miles driven per year. Then we took each of our vehicles and ran them through KBB’s ‘What is my car’s worth’ calculator to get a trade in valuation and a private sell valuation under good condition and then again under excellent condition (remember, the condition of a car with a perfect mechanical state and minor scratches and stains is good, not excellent) . For every vehicle (besides the Tesla Model 3 due to age), we went back through 10 years of data which resulted in about 100 data points.
Results
So, after all that, what did the numbers say? The trade in values of cars increased an average of 10%, which translated to an average increase of $1,666, in cars with an excellent condition versus a good condition. The private sale values, which typically yield higher profits than trade ins, increased an average of 9%, which translated to average increase of $1,772. So just by having your car detailed, getting rid of those minor scratches and fixing up the interior you pocketed approximately an extra $1,700 in your pocket! Who doesn’t want an extra $1,700?
Book today
At this point you’re probably saying, yea an extra $1,700 sounds great, but what is it going to cost me to get rid of minor scratches and to have the interior detailed? Great question. Here at Fort Worth Auto Detail, we offer many different packages depending on your needs and specific situation. On a car that you are selling, it probably does not make sense to go with our diamond package  to put a graphene ceramic coating on the car to last several years. That package is better suited for the new car you are purchasing. For most of our clients, we would recommend something like our silver package on the exterior and interior which includes a light polish to remove those minor scratches and the right amount of care to have your interior looking better than ever.
Conclusion
Whether you have a vehicle you are getting ready to sell or your new vehicle needs to be protected, contact us today and we would love to talk you through how we can protect your investment.

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade’s Gas V-8 Fuel Economy is a Mixed Bag
The 2021 Cadillac Escalade promises a host of flashy upgrades, including an independent rear suspension, massive 38-inch display, and Super Cruise driver-assistance technology. One thing that hasn’t changed dramatically is the 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Although it gets more sophisticated fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation technology, it makes the same 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque as before. So, we’re not surprised that the new Escalade’s fuel economy is about the same as its predecessor’s—meaning, well, just be glad gas is cheap.
Per the rig’s official EPA fuel economy estimates, the new Escalade with rear-wheel drive is rated at 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. Upgrade to four-wheel drive, and the ’21 Escalade’s figures drop to 14/19/16 mpg (city/highway/combined). It seems those figures apply to both the short- and long-wheelbase Escalade ESV models, and both are both better and worse than those of their 2020 counterparts.
Last year’s rear-drive Escalade was rated for 14/23/17 mpg (city/highway/combined), with 4WD dropping those to 14/21/17, meaning they boasted significantly better highway fuel economy but worse city and combined numbers. The drop in the Escalade’s highway efficiency is particularly odd given the V-8 engine’s highly touted, improved cylinder deactivation feature, but we’ll reserve judgment until we test a 2021 Escalade’s fuel economy ourselves in the real world. If you’re hinging your full-size luxury SUV purchase on fuel economy, the Caddy’s crosstown rival, the Lincoln Navigator, tops out at 19 mpg combined.
The new Escalade’s fuel economy numbers, predictably, match those of the 2021 Tahoe and 2021 GMC Yukon with the 6.2-liter engine. Of course, we’re still awaiting MPG numbers for the new diesel engine coming to GM’s big SUVs, which will be a no-cost option on the Cadillac. The 277-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six will pair to the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the V-8 (the two engines share a 460-lb-ft peak torque rating), and should provide a considerable efficiency bump. If the diesel is behaves as it does in the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup, it should feel buttery smooth.
Last month, Cadillac released some pricing information for the 2021 Escalade. Again, surprisingly, there is no difference in the starting price of gas and diesel models. No matter which engine you choose, prices start at $77,490 for rear-drive, short-wheelbase models and rise from there as you add four-wheel drive or jump to the longer-wheelbase model.

2021 Chevy Silverado Realtree Edition Brings Back Camouflage Factory
Tumblr media
2021 Chevy Silverado Realtree -gNewscar.com- After about five years of absence, Chevy returns with another Realtree-themed pickup truck. 2021 Chevy Silverado Realtree Edition will once again be a limited production pickup for outdoor devices. And this time, this is coupled with the extra off-road ability of the Boss Trail trim.
Tumblr media
Features that distinguish this as a fully cosmetic Realtree edition. The most prominent pattern is a camouflage-pattern "Wood " special-on the side of the bed and on the hood. The bed itself gets a liner that also features the Realtree logo. Other exterior bits include black badging, black exhaust ends and side steps. Inside, more camouflage patterns are displayed on the door panel. Included in the larger Realtree Edition
Tumblr media
Mechanically, the Realtree edition is just a custom trail boss. It comes with both a 5.3 litre V5 355 horsepower and an automatic six-speed or optional 420-horsepower V8 6.2 liter V8 and 10-speed transmission. It has a two-inch suspension lift plus a shock packet off-road shock Z71 package, skid plate, downhill control and automatic locking back differential. As part of the Realtree Edition, it also comes standard with a 20 inch wheel wrapped in muddy tires.
Tumblr media
The Realtree edition was on sale this summer. The price has not been announced, but should be disclosed close to the sales date. A same-equipped 2020 Silverado Trail Boss 1500 with a short four-door "Double Cab " Bodystyle comes in at around $40,000, so we'll expect Realtree Edition to be a little more than that. 2020 Corvette Price, Spec Impressive Power and Acceleration Read the full article

Nissan Titan vs. Nissan Titan XD: Which Is the Better Buy?
With many full-size pickups, there’s a pretty clear delineation between the half-ton and heavy-duty version. The Ford F-150 and the Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty, for instance, all live under the same F-Series umbrella but sport different styling, different engines, and even slightly different interiors. Very little differentiation exists between the revised and 2020 Nissan Titan XD. Nissan’s half-ton Titan and three-quarter-ton Titan XD both share the same general sheetmetal, same interior, and even the same engine and transmission. So which Titan is the better buy?
What, Exactly, Is the Same?
The two Titans share a lot more than their badges, names, and general designs. Under the hood of both the 2020 Titan and 2020 Titan XD sits Nissan’s Endurance 5.6-liter V-8, which produces 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, increases of 10 horsepower and 19 lb-ft over the 2019 model. They also share transmissions, a standard 9-speed automatic. A 5.0-liter Cummins-sourced turbodiesel V-8 used to be available on the Titan XD, but it was dropped for the 2020 model year.
The Titan XD comes with a longer bed, but its interior is the same size as that of a Titan crew cab, sporting the same five-passenger seating configuration and identical head-, knee-, leg-, and shoulder-room dimensions. Both trucks also share an upgraded 9-inch Apple CarPlay-friendly infotainment system and Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 driver assistance suite with forward collision warning, front and rear automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beams, and lane departure warning.
What’s the Difference Between the Nissan Titan and Titan XD?
Not much, but also a whole lot. First off, there’s the matter of size—the Titan XD, being a heavy-duty three-quarter-ton truck with a 6.5-foot bed, its wheelbase and length are longer and its suspension stands taller than the Titan. The Titan crew cab with 5.5-foot bed (an extended cab with a 6.5-foot bed is also available on the Titan) sports a 139.8-inch wheelbase and is 228.2 inches long and 79.5 inches wide (the Pro4X trim adds 1.3 inches of length and 1.2 inches of width), and height ranges from 75.1-77.2 inches depending on model. The Titan XD, which only comes in a crew cab/6.5-foot box configuration, has a 151.6.-inch wheelbase and is 243.4 inches long, 79.5 inches wide, and 78.9 inches tall (with Pro4X bodywork altering those dimensions by similar amounts).
Mechanically, there are only two differences between the two Titans. One is in their standard drivetrains; the Titan comes standard with rear-wheel drive, while the Titan XD is only available with four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is a $3,200 option on the Titan. The two trucks have different final drive ratios, too; the Titan’s is 3.69:1, while the Titan XD has a shorter 4:08:1 ratio.
How Much Can the Titan Tow and Haul?
In its most capable configuration, the Titan maxes out with a payload capacity of 1,680 pounds and a towing capacity of 9,210 pounds. The Titan XD, in its most capable configuration, has a maximum payload capacity of 2,450 pounds, a hitch towing capacity of 10,880 pounds, and a gooseneck towing capacity of 11,000 pounds.
Those figures are fairly middling for their respective classes. In the half-ton segment, the Ford F-150 can outhaul and out-tow both the Titan and Titan XD, with a 3,270-pound payload capacity and 13,200-pound tow capacity. Both the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 come close to besting the Titan XD’s payload capacity (2,300 pound and 2,280 pounds for the Ram and Chevy, respectively) and do beat the Nissan truck’s towing capacity, at 11,620 and 12,200 pounds, respectively.
Which Titan Is Better to Drive?
Despite a 780-pound difference between the Titan XD and lighter Titan, they both drive pretty similarly. The Titan’s 7.3-second 0–60 mph and 15.6-second quarter mile time is a tenth of a second quicker than the Titan XD’s, and it traps at 90.9 mph, 2.6 mph faster than the XD. The Titan stops shorter than the XD in 60–0 mph braking tests, 128 feet versus 138 feet, but both trucks round the figure eight in 28.4 seconds at 0.60 g average.
Out in the world, the two trucks drive more differently than the numbers would suggest. The Titan XD’s shorter gearing, for instance, really makes it feel quicker than the Titan, even if the numbers prove it isn’t. Unsurprisingly, the standard Titan feels much nimbler than its big brother. While both trucks’ light, overly boosted steering is  worthy of neither praise nor criticism, the Titan XD’s aircraft carrier-like turning circle is certainly worth the latter. At 53.8 feet (versus the standard Titan’s 48.0-foot turning circle), any turn beyond 90 degrees in anything less than a wide-open field in the XD requires multiple points and lots of patience. Both trucks ride similarly; harsh impacts are well damped by the suspension, but a fair amount of head toss and body roll is transmitted to the cabin.
How Much Does a Nissan Titan Cost?
Prices for the 2020 Nissan Titan start at $37,785 for a rear-drive King Cab S model, but our well-equipped crew cab Titan Pro4X 4×4 stickered for $58,655. Prices for the 2020 Nissan Titan XD S start at $46,175, while our Titan XD SL tester was priced at $61,790.
Which Titan Is the Better Buy?
We’ll leave the issue of whether one should consider a Titan over its domestic rivals for another story, but between the two Titans, the standard half-ton Titan is the better buy. It’s cheaper, easier to drive, and available in more configurations. And, perhaps most important, its payload and towing numbers are at least sort-of class-competitive, making it a far more competitive pickup truck than the Titan XD.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500: More Diesel, More Speeds
GMC’s new-for-2019 Sierra 1500 took a less controversial styling route than its Chevy Silverado sibling while retaining the numerous upgrades foisted upon the next-generation pickup twins. For 2020, GMC tweaked the light-duty Sierra’s offerings just a bit, hoping to lure more finicky buyers into the model. For starters, GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission has a new […]

This truck can tow, as max towing increases a large 52 percentage to 35,500(!) pounds. Payload is also manner up, sitting at 7,466 kilos. Making those numbers possible is the Duramax 6.6-liter faster-diesel V8. It produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-ft of torque. a larger 28-inch mechanical fan is now used to cool the diesel engine. GM is pairing this engine with a new Allison 10-velocity computerized transmission. The engine is smart, too. If it's too hot after hauling, a message within the cluster will tell the motive force to preserve the engine on. in case you grow to be ignoring that and turning it off, the faraway-start system will mechanically prompt to chill the engine down. Chevy says every component among the transmission and wheels have been upgraded to address the improved towing load. It has a 30 percentage large (in diameter) prop shaft. The box ladder frame has been made harder, and the axles are larger. a new 6.6-liter V8 fuel engine is trendy — this unit makes 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, greater strength and thrust than before. Chevy says it bills for a 18 percent advantage in towing capability for the gas engine model. This engine is based-off Chevy's 6.0-liter V8, but uses a 6-mm longer stroke and direct injection to make the extra energy. Chevrolet exerted a lot of attempt to make this truck tow-pleasant. It bested both the new Ram Heavy duty and the outgoing 2019 Ford notable duty numbers by means of small margins for max towing. but, Ford's discern is probable to climb for the 2020 version yr. Chevy's new trailering machine gives up to fifteen digicam angles, with one in every of them being the cool "transparent trailer" view that allows you spot at the back of what you're towing. a brand new Park Grade hold assist function can now use all 4 service brakes (not just the parking brakes) to keep a truck stopped on a hill with a heavy load. in the cabin you may have even more space to sprawl out, as Chevy has expanded the HD length and wheelbase. One neat little function is a VIN-particular trailering records label on each truck. The label lists slash weight, GVWR, gross combined weight score, max payload, max tongue weight, gross axle weight score and 5th-wheel and gooseneck ratings. The approach you might not need to seek advice from Google or dig thru manuals to understand what you could or can not haul. five trim stages might be provided to start with consisting of: paintings Truck, custom, LT, LTZ and excessive u . s . a .. The paintings Truck grille is the one with the black "Chevrolet" flow-via style grille. The custom has 20-inch wheels and body-colored trim — this trim stage is best available at the 2500HD, now not the 3500HD. If you like chrome, you then're excellent off going with the LT or LTZ trims, due to the fact those each feature an entire lot of it. eventually, the excessive u . s . a . we've visible before is the classiest of the bunch with a front fascia of its very own. you'll be in a position to inform the diesel HDs from their gasoline counterparts by means of looking at the hood. The grease-burners have a miles large and extra distinguished hood scoop. The 2020 Silverado HD goes on sale this summer time. Chevy says pricing might be introduced toward the on-sale date SUBCRIBE NOW.. youtube.com/c/TopCarsChannel My Other Sites Facebook : http://bit.ly/2S33EwM GooGle plus : http://bit.ly/2Uz66Ib Twitter : https://twitter.com/Top_Cars1 Pinterest : http://bit.ly/2RZzevw Blogger : http://bit.ly/2UBSBI5 Instagram : http://bit.ly/2S2cISV Popular Vidio. 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD Tech: Seven Pub-Ammo Bullet(Point)s
It may be the year of the pig in China, but in the U.S. it’s the year of the heavy-duty pickup. Ram yanked the silk off its 2500/3500 models at the Detroit show, GMC and Ford followed a few weeks later (being coy about some of their numbers), and now it’s Chevy’s turn. Here are seven rounds of “pub ammo” to arm you for your next barroom session of big-truck smack-talking.
Read our 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD First Look right here!
Small Block Gasser
On paper this new engine looks kind of like a light-duty 6.2-liter that’s been stroked from 92 to 98mm, but it features numerous structural enhancements. The biggie is replacing aluminum in the block with gray cast iron. The crankshaft is made of forged steel and the connecting rods forged of powdered metal. Stronger “hyper-eutectic” pistons deliver 10.8:1 compression (down from 11.5:1 in the light-duty’s 6.2), and direct fuel injection is used. The camshaft supports fixed-overlap variable valve timing, but (at least for now), there’s no cylinder deactivation system. A 28.0-inch cooling fan, up by 2.5 inches from before—is driven by a larger 1-inch-diameter water pump shaft (interestingly, Chevy claims no 12-volt electric fan is powerful enough).
6L Duramax Diesel
Most alterations made to the diesel involve recalibrating it to work with the new 10-speed automatic, but there have been a few reinforcements to enable the 52-percent bump in towing. The cylinder-head gaskets are strengthened, the oil cooler gets 19 cooling plates (five more than before), and the turbocharger is reconfigured to enable 14 percent more “Jake Brake” engine braking. A new after-run feature allows the engine to restart and remain running for up to 15 minutes after the driver switches off and locks the truck in order to fully cool down following a particularly rigorous drive.
GM/Allison 10-Speed
This transmission is built by GM, and the design leverages the same arrangement of planetary gears, clutches, and brakes as the one jointly developed by GM and Ford. But the development and durability testing was all handled by Allison Transmissions, which specializes in automatics for ultra-heavy-duty commercial and defense vehicles. As such, this transmission may have ended up a wee bit too strong (and possibly too expensive) for use with the gas engine. Relative to the Silverado 1500’s 10-speed, the Allison’s first two ratios are 3 to 4 percent taller; the rest are very close, and the overall ratio spread is 7.20 versus 7.34.
6L90 6-Speed
Gas-powered HDs get the same six ratios you’ll find in the 1500’s 6L80 transmission, but the torque converter is strengthened. It borrows technology from the diesel converters, and each of the transmission’s internal multi-plate clutch packs adds the clamping force of one extra friction and steel plate.
4-Auto Transfer Case Mode
Just like the 1500s, the HD can be programmed to engage its 4-Hi mode when wheel-slip is detected, reverting to 2-Hi mode when traction is regained. This potentially saves some fuel during normal running and also prevents the axle-bind that results when making sharper turns with the front and rear axles locked together in 4-Hi mode. Some transfer case internals had to be reinforced to make this feature possible on the new HDs.
Driveline Beef
GM claims its trucks can deliver all 910 lb-ft of peak diesel torque to the ground in first and second gears thanks to such reinforcements as a new 5-inch-diameter aluminum one-piece drive shaft (up from 3.5 inches and two pieces). The largest available ring gear in a 1500 (11.5 inches) is now the smallest HD one, and a 12.0-inch gear shoulders the load in max-towing-spec trucks. There’s an extra frame crossmember, and the crossmembers that support the fifth-wheel/gooseneck hitches are redesigned to be lighter and stronger. The corrosion protection is also improved to outlast the typical 12-year ownership period, with the primed and painted frame being dipped in a new wax-based material and with key fasteners getting new coatings that prevent corrosion where they join parts.
Unitized Cab/Nose
The T1-generation HD assembly process needed a major rethink because of the newly unitized cab and front end. Much of the equipment that mounts to the firewall, engine, or front of a pickup truck chassis is typically installed after the “marriage” of the cab and chassis but before the fenders, hood, and front radiator-support structure get bolted on. This new generation integrates all those parts, rendering the engine compartment largely inaccessible after the “marriage,” so those operations all had to be moved upstream on either the body or chassis side. The benefit is improved fit/finish and body rigidity.

The New Chevy Silverado HD Can Tow More than Your Truck Can
With a grille that would do a Mack truck proud and a claimed best-in-class towing capacity of up to 35,500 pounds, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty bowed at the plant in Flint, Michigan where it will be built. Like the rival Ram Heavy Duty and Ford Super Duty lines, the Silverado HD and its close sibling, the GMC Sierra HD, have targeted big numbers and best-in-class with a fervor usually reserved for Camaro vs. Mustang vs. Challenger, only here the profit margins and contribution to the corporate bottom line are exponentially larger and more important.
The Chevy Silverado HDs share virtually nothing in design or engineering with the Silverado 1500s, says General Motors president Mark Reuss. “[These customers] do not want a bigger light-duty. They want a truck scaled to their needs,” he said.
Reuss also acknowledged GM’s recent spate of layoffs as part of the company’s “tough decisions, right decisions” in shifting the automaker into the right direction for future success. Those layoffs make the timing of the big trucks’ introduction awkward, though Reuss said GM plans to add 1,000 jobs to this Flint Assembly plant, which has more than 3,000 hourly workers on three shifts.
HD and half-ton Silverados share no major parts and components beyond having the same roof panel, and together the heavy- and light-duty Chevrolets and GMCs account for 24 distinct models. (This does not include the midsize Colorado/Canyon or the new medium-duty trucks.) GM trucks have collectively been number one in industry sales, Reuss said, with more than 973,000 sold in 2018, a position it’s likely to lose with the return of the in-demand Ranger to Ford’s lineup.
While the half-ton full-size GM pickups adapted mixed-material construction for 2019 in order to cut weight, the HD Silverado sticks with all steel for its ladder frame and body. The taller grille and prominent, functional dual hood vents are intended to help cool the engine in diesel versions, said Rich Scheer, exterior design director for Chevrolet trucks. The HDs are wider and taller and the crew cab’s wheelbase is increased by 5.2 inches.
Scheer acknowledged negative reaction on social media to a preview of the Silverado HD’s visage, though the new, techy nose looks better in person than in photos.
Four of the five trim levels—Work Truck, Custom, LT, and LTZ—feature the CHEVROLET lettering across the horizontal grille bar, while the top-dog High Country replaces the lettering with a gold bowtie. The five trims are available on both the Chevy Silverado 2500 and the 3500 dually models.
Engine choices are an all-new 6.6-liter V-8 with what Chevy says is first in the HD segment with gas direct-injection. The iron small-block V-8 features a high-compression ratio, Chevy says, and makes 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, up from 360 and 380 for the previous gas V-8. It delivers power through a carryover six-speed automatic transmission.
The much more popular engine, the Silverado HD’s 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 diesel, is a heavily upgraded version of the outgoing rig’s. It now has a new 28-inch-diameter fan, up from 25, and its oil cooler has five extra plates for a total of 19. Engine-braking capacity is up 14 percent. While the Duramax’s 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque is unchanged, Chevy swipes at the Ram HD’s 1000-lb-ft Cummins diesel by bragging that its diesel can put down all its torque from launch, in first gear.
The Duramax is paired with a 10-speed Allison automatic, built by GM. Chevy says it was developed with Allison engineers and validated by the transmission maker, and is on architecture “similar” to the 10-speed automatic that Ford and GM developed together, and which comes with Ford’s freshly updated Super Duty F-series pickups. The transmission’s clutches and brakes are the same, but gear ratios are slightly different, according to Chevrolet. The new gearbox also features an integrated power take-off unit with chain drive, all for quieter operation.
A new Autotrac active two-speed transfer case on 4×4 Silverado HDs electronically controls the 4 Auto mode, for “seamless” shifting between rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive.
Every Chevy Silverado HD dually has a towing capacity of more than 30,000 pounds, up to the 35,500-pound maximum, which is a 52-percent increase over the outgoing model’s max. The Silverado 2500 with the gas-powered V-8 has a 17,400-pound towing capacity, up 18 percent.
Features on the HD Silverado’s new ladder frame include a one-piece, five-inch prop shaft in place of the old truck’s two-piece, 3.5-inch shaft, for better load distribution. The Silverado 3500 has a new 12-inch rear axle and 12-inch ring gear. The trucks carry over their double-wishbone front suspensions.
Being a new pickup truck, the ’20 Chevy Silverado HD features the latest advanced camera technology, with eight available cameras offering up to 15 different views. The digital cameras are hard-wired and high-definition, and include a rear side view with turn-signal activated biasing, and a “see-through” feature that allows the driver to virtually “look” through the trailer he or she is towing. The driver also can use the center screen to check tire pressures and temperatures on the trailer, as well as the truck, and can pre-condition a trailer home’s heating, air-conditioning and water heater.
Chevrolet claims the largest cargo volume in the truck’s segment, and the Silverado HDs come with a 120-volt outlet in the bed, a segment-first power up-and-down tailgate, and nine moveable and 12 fixed bed tiedowns. Advanced trailering features include a pre-departure checklist, customizable trailer profiles, and a smart trailer app. This is the first Silverado HD that doesn’t share its bed with the Silverado 1500.
Yes, these gargantuan trucks have all the modern features one could fit inside. Each Detroit competitor has its own list of best-in-class numbers, and it seems each will continue to leapfrog the others as long as there are companies to build them.
