Review: The Improved 2020 Volkswagen Passat Is a Missed Opportunity
When Volkswagen decided to launch the significantly updated 2020 Passat near some of Southern California’s legendary driving roads, it raised a few eyebrows (both of mine). The Passat is no longer our first choice for a midsize sedan we’d hoon up a world-class road like Angeles Crest, but could this midcycle refresh change that?
The U.S.-spec 2020 Passat still rides on an old platform—unlike the Passats for the Chinese and European markets, which are now built on VW’s much newer MQB architecture that underpins the Golf (a MotorTrend favorite). So even though the Passat is refreshed for 2020, the body-in-white is essentially the same as the car that took home our Car of the Year honors in 2012. VW says this is to keep costs down because sedan sales are on the decline in the U.S., but as a result the Passat is hindered from start to finish.
For 2020, the bodywork is now a bit swoopier, with a reworked front-end design, new LED headlights, a fresh grille that ties it to the current Jetta, and a sculpted rear that makes the Passat a more handsome machine than before. The 2.0-liter turbo-four makes the same 174 hp but is up to 206 lb-ft of torque, and the six-speed automatic gets a new torque converter. Inside, the changes are even more subtle. But they shouldn’t have been. The gauge cluster in the U.S.-spec Passat hosts a teeny color display between an analog tach and speedometer—had VW made the move to the MQB platform, the Passat could have come with Volkswagen’s state-of-the-art fully digital instrument cluster, like in the Tiguan, but the sedan’s older platform won’t allow for it. The climate controls remain unchanged, as does the center console. Volkswagen did make blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic LED headlights features standard across all trim levels, however.
The 2020 Passat’s dashboard has been adapted to include some Arteon-esque air vents, and the infotainment display is new. At just 6.3 inches, the touchscreen is small for the segment—European Passats can be upgraded to an 8.0-inch display, something that isn’t possible in the North American car thanks to its dated platform. Desirable optional gear includes a Fender audio system, adaptive cruise control (standard on three of four trims), heated front and rear seats, and dual-zone climate control (also standard on three of four trims).
Unfortunately, a slightly modernized interior and extra niceties can’t hide the car’s obvious age inside. The dashboard and center console, though clean and easy to use, look positively spartan when compared to others in the segment. But how does the old sedan stack up on the road?
Realizing that the Passat might need some extra sportiness for our drive ahead, I jumped into a 2020 Passat R-Line. The R-Line adds slightly different front and rear bumpers, steering wheel–mounted paddle shifters, and stickier Falken rubber wrapped around R-Line-exclusive 19-inch wheels.
The new tires represent one of the biggest dynamic differences between this newish 2020 Passat and the old one. Whereas the last R-Line came with bigger wheels but tires that were no more grippy, the Falkens were much more up to the task of hustling the sedan up a twisty mountain road. Thanks to the paddles on the wheel, it was easy to stay in the desired gear, but the transmission regularly ignored me when I asked for a downshift. The steering is light yet accurate, but the brakes have almost no feel, and a dead spot at the top of the pedal’s travel makes coming to a well-judged stop extremely difficult.
Once we dropped out of the twisty roads above Los Angeles and onto its aging freeways, the old Passat came good. The 405 freeway’s pavement is notoriously noisy and craggy, but the Passat—even on its 19-inch alloys—soaked up the lumps and bumps with ease. It was quiet at speed, allowing so little wind and tire noise into the cabin that even whisper-volume conversations were audible. No squeaks or errant rattles made their way into the cabin as we thumped it over bumps and expansion joints. The Passat was easily as comfortable as its big brother, the Arteon, but with better body control over large undulations. The long and straight journey down the 405 suit the Passat. Fitting, as the U.S.-spec Passat has been built specifically for the American market since 2012, and long, straight journeys abound in the lower 48. I just can’t help but wonder how much better the Passat could have been when the going gets twisty if it were built on MQB. In the midsize sedan class, you can have your cake and eat it, too: the Accord, a two-time comparison winner, expertly handles the practical matters that matter to families while also being better to drive.
That said, the refreshed Passat is still spacious, quiet, and comfortable. It’s not going to set your hair on fire or inspire you to push for that next apex. What it should do is offer the same kinds of features as the Altima and Optima, but the omission of a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a decently sized infotainment screen, and a surround-view camera system makes it less appealing. The 2020 Passat starts at $23,915, undercutting most of its competitors in base price—and it also boasts a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty with two years/20,000 miles of free maintenance. Even so, the Passat doesn’t have enough optional cabin tech to satisfy those who appreciate such niceties, and it still isn’t as nimble as the class-leading Accord. A more feature-laden Passat with modern underpinnings does exist, just not in the U.S., and that’s what frustrates us about the U.S.-spec 2020 Passat. If you must have a roomy, comfortable, well-priced German sedan in your driveway and don’t mind skipping out on features many competitors offer, the Passat could have a home on your short list. Otherwise, consider a lower-trim Arteon, another midsize sedan, or wait a few years for the hoped-for full redesign of the Passat.

2019 Chicago Auto Show: Hits, Misses, and Revelations
The 2019 Chicago Auto Show was one big anniversary celebration. Mazda staged a white NA, a blue NB, and a red NC MX-5 Miata just offstage from the Racing Orange ND convertible and RF coupe 30th Anniversary editions of the sports car. NA design chief Tom Matano and “Father of the Miata” Bob Hall were on hand for the unveiling, and a couple of hours later, the U.S. allotment of 500 Anniversary models were sold out.
Acura’s stand had an original ’90 NSX and a new one, both in red, as John Ikeda, who was Honda R&D of America chief in the late ’80s, waxed nostalgic about the first Japanese supercar’s development and introduction, with spokesman Sage Marie and former Car and Driver editor-in-chief Csaba Csere. There was a big crowd and Acura ran out of bubbly for the champagne toast.
Both the Miata and NSX, as the NS-X concept, made their global premieres at this show in 1989. Elsewhere this year at McCormick Place, Fiat Chrysler celebrated 35 years of the minivan, with a special-edition Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Grand Caravan, and a 1984 Plymouth Voyager on display. Volkswagen unveiled its new Jetta GLI with a 35th anniversary edition of that model.
But it’s the 30th anniversary of the Miata and NSX that got us to wondering whether the 2020 Chicago Auto Show might finally once again have a number of big introductions and grab some important premieres when Detroit moves next year from January to June. Or will those introductions go to Los Angeles in November and CES in January instead? For now, here are the cars and trucks you need to see at the 2019 Chicago show:
HIT: 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sometimes it’s best to do what’s expected. We figured the all-new Jetta GLI would return to being a GTI with a trunk, as it was known for a long time, and that’s exactly how the product manager described it to us. Having started my family at a young age, I’ve always preferred the GLI to the GTI, and this one delivers what I want: subtle sportiness that speaks of security rather than a need to show off. Past GLIs have generally been a bit softer than GTIs, but VW says this won’t be the case for the new car; it has used the GTI’s handling as the benchmark, and given the minor weight differences between the Golf and the GTI, that’s doable. The new Jetta GLI fills me with hope, and there’s little chance it will disappoint.—Aaron Gold
While I find the base Jetta to be uninspired, and figure it’s going to age rather quickly, I’m impressed by the latest GLI. It ditches the regular Jetta’s torsion-beam rear end for a multilink suspension, and 228 horsepower with 258 lb-ft of torque are numbers many other sport-trim FWD compact sedans would love to have. I’m taken with the ghost gray model on display on the show floor, with its six-speed manual gearbox. I put the over-under on this car at $35,000 (it was $30,000 not long ago). Load up too many options and there are other, more interesting competitors in the $35,000-to-$40,000 range.—Todd Lassa
MISS: 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Okay, so, what’s with making the DCC adaptive-damper system exclusive to the limited-run 35th Anniversary Edition? Why does Volkswagen always seem to hobble their performance cars a little bit? Back when the current-gen GTI came out, it charged extra for the most powerful engine tune and a limited-slip diff. It has cut that crap, but now it’s narrowing availability of DCC to a limited-run model which will no doubt demand a price premium. I wouldn’t object to making DCC an optional extra, although if VW really cared about making the right impression, it would fit it as standard to the Jetta GLI. DCC really hones the GTI and Golf R’s edge, letting the driver choose between super-sharp handling and a more comfortable commute. But not even offering it as an option means that buyers who want a GLI with leather—or who don’t want to pay extra for a limited-edition car—have to do with second-rate handling. That’s just silly, and if I were a VW fan, I’d be insulted.—AG
REVELATION: The 2020 Subaru Legacy goes premium. I can’t call the new Legacy a hit. The sheetmetal is more “anodyne midsize sedan” than “interestingly awkward Subaru.” I can’t call it a miss, because it’s on Subaru’s impressive new global platform, so it’s likely to ride and handle better than it looks. With this new midsize model, Subaru is on board with most of its Japanese brethren and Volkswagen in figuring the midsize sedan segment isn’t going to shrink much more, and so it can pick up market share from the larger players discontinuing their car lines. With its new top trim level, the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four-powered Touring XT, Subaru has the opportunity to rake in SUV-sized profit margins with the new Legacy.—TL
REVELATION: 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition paint. I thought the Miata would look good in any color. I was wrong. Maybe it was the harsh show lights, but to me, the Miata in “Racing Orange” looks like a molded-in-color plastic model.—AG

Volkswagens MEB platform underpins a new generation of electric cars Though more are available from dealers than ever before electric cars still account for just a small part of the new-car market. Volkswagen wants to wants to grow EV sales by leaps and bounds aiming to sell 150000 electric cars globally in 2020 and a million of them annually by 2025. The key ingredient in that push is an all-new car platform called MEB called in English the Modular Electric Drive Matrix. I spent a day in Dresden Germany to learn from the experts why Volkswagen believes MEB will make its new fleet of electric cars so successful. The MEB platform will be used for Volkswagens new electric cars. Volkswagen Flexible and purpose-built MEB follows on from Volkswagens well-known MQB modular platform. Like MQB MEB is designed to simplify the design and construction of multiple different vehicles by reusing many common components. However no major parts carry over from the internal-combustion-focused MQB platform (used for cars as diverse as the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Jetta) and MEB. The modular chassis will have only a few variables in terms of its basic size with two wheelbases and two different dash-to-axle proportions. The track width can be tweaked slightly too by installing different suspension components. Atop that somewhat inflexible base VW designers will have the freedom to craft a variety of different car bodies: The platform is said to accommodate compact cars crossovers sedans and even shooting brakes. As on most other purpose-built electric cars MEB puts electric motors at either end of the platform with a flat battery pack in the floor pan. The chassis is rear-wheel-drive by default with all-wheel drive available as an option. With the battery pack giving a low center of gravity and near 50:50 weight distribution rear drive makes more sense due to the weight distribution the traction and the driving agility says MEB model line project leader Tino Fuhrman. He notes how easy it is to accidentally break the tires loose in todays front-wheel-drive e-Golf as it carries most of its battery weight rearward. The battery pack is sandwiched in the cars floor pan. Volkswagen The good news for enthusiasts is that MEB will be able to offer higher-power models but not due to new motors. Instead higher-performing cars will have a different ratio in the motors single-speed reduction gearbox and updated software to push more power to the motors. But there are just two motor designs used for all MEB cars: one for the rear wheels and another for the front wheels. The design of MEB means that Volkswagen was able to increase interior and cargo room compared with equivalent internal-combustion cars. A flat floor because theres no tunnel for an exhaust or driveshaft and a smaller engine compartment ahead of the firewall make things much roomier. The height of the battery pack in the floor however means that occupants sit higher than in say an equivalent Golf. VW sees that as an advantage given customer preferences for higher seating positions. Contrary to expectations Volkswagens new platform does not use exotic materials to save weight. Engineers considered carbon fiber but decided it wasnt up to the high-volume moderate-cost goals the company has for these cars. Even aluminum is used only sparingly with most of the MEB chassis built from high-strength steel. As was evident from the concepts the MEB car family will wear large wheels: 18 to 21 inches depending on model and trim. Thats partly because the cars sit higher due to the in-floor battery and also because engineers say large-diameter wheels allow for larger contact patches to compensate for using low rolling-resistance tires. Engineers also tried to future-proof MEB by leaving space for features that arent yet available. For instance theres a panel in the floor pan design for an inductive-charging system as well as a 1.06 cubic-foot cavity in the dash for an augmented-reality head-up display (typical HUD modules engineers say take up less than half a cubic foot of space). And the platforms electrical architecture is designed to accommodate autonomous-driving technology at some point down the road. A cutaway showing the internal structure of the new battery pack which is made up of multiple modules. Jake Holmes/Roadshow All-new battery pack Volkswagens MEB cars will use rectangular battery packs embedded in the floor of the car. VW will offer two different capacities for the packs roughly 48 to 62 kilowatt-hours on the low end and about 80 to 82 kilowatt-hours on the top end. Those should give driving ranges of 330 to 550 kilometers (205-342 miles) according to Europes WLTP efficiency ratings. US EPA figures are still to be determined but Fuhrman says to expect something like 175 to 300 miles depending on battery size. Because the battery is in the bottom of the car its relatively easy to replace the battery pack if it fails or as it ages; doing so on todays e-Golf is very expensive Volkswagen says. The pack itself consists of multiple modules consisting of multiple cells. Volkswagen will source its battery cells from either LG Chem or Samsung; the company says having two options will avoid production slowdowns if theres a supply issue. Unlike todays e-Golf the battery pack is liquid-cooled (the motor is cooled too on a separate coolant circuit). VW says the cooling system is said to be effective enough that fast-charging the battery wont degrade its life due to overheating. There are sensors in each of the battery modules to keep tabs on temperature too. Metal cross-braces between each battery module add stiffness to help keep the pack from damage in a crash. But engineers note that the battery pack is already in a part of the car that engineers work to protect in side-impact collisions: the passenger compartment. The MEB platforms charging ports are on the right-rear fender where the gas cap is on todays Volkswagens. Jake Holmes/Roadshow Charging plans As with any EV charging is a key consideration. No matter how big the cars battery pack customers can be turned off it recharging takes too long. Fortunately VW plans for the MEB platform to accommodate 100-kilowatt charging at launch and 125-kW charging later. The latter should be enough for the car to add 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of driving range per minute of charging. Moreover VW hopes that owners will take a new approach to charging their cars. Martin Römheld the companys head of e-mobility services likens owning an electric car to your smartphone: You top it up from time to time throughout your day at places like public chargers. Contrast that to a gasoline car that you run until the tank is empty. Charging your phone is a standard part of your life now you dont think about it he says. Charging will take place where you want to go. Volkswagen is also working to build out charging networks. All 4000 VW dealers in Europe will have at least three charge points by 2020 the company says. There the Ionity charge network is set to establish 400 fast-charge points along major highways. And in the US Electrify America plans to establish charging points no more than 120 miles apart on major Interstate routes. For home use VW plans to sell its own Wallbox (the device that converts your household power into a form an electric car can use) from 300 euros. VW engineers also have future-proofed the MEB platform for inductive charging. Theres an open reserved spot in the bottom of the car thats intended to accept an inductive pad when the technology is ready for primentime. The I.D. Crozz will be one of the first MEB-chassis cars to go on sale. It arrives in 2020. Volkswagen Headed to market soon One of the biggest remaining questions is how much the new cars will cost as electrics traditionally cost more than equivalent internal-combustion models. Thomas Ulbrich Volkswagen board member responsible for e-mobility says the cars should be affordable to the masses with the goal of making the new MEB-based cars no more expensive than an equivalent diesel-powered model today. Then it is not any longer a price range for only special customers he says. We will build electric vehicles for millions and not just millionaires. Of course an exact price has yet to be announced. Production begins in 2019 with the first MEB-based car the Golf-like I.D. hatchback to launch in Europe in 2020. Then the I.D. Crozz crossover will follow; itll likely be the first MEB model to be sold in the US. After that the I.D. Buzz van and the I.D. Vizzion sedan concepts will become production cars. Even more body styles are possible after that Volkswagen says; including the aforementioned models Ulbrich promises 27 MEB-model launches globally from 2019 through 2022. Its going to be a big lift for Volkswagen to sell its planned 1 million electric cars annually by 2025 but theres no denying that with the new MEB strategy the company is putting all its chips on EVs taking off in a big way. 2020 VW Passat: Making Incremental Moves in a Declining Segment
What you see here is Volkswagen’s big debut for January’s Detroit auto show, the new 2020 VW Passat sedan. If a couple things in that sentence strike you as diminished in relevance, well, that’s because they are.
An increasing number of prominent brands have declined to participate in the Detroit show, sending the organizers scrambling to keep the event vital, while the basic sedan has seen its U.S. market share plummet from 38 percent in 2012 to 26 percent last year as the Rise of the SUV continues unabated. But VW says that it still believes in auto shows and that it still believes in sedans, so here we are.
And there we were, in downtown Detroit for the official unveil of the new car. The shape is a little more dynamic than before thanks to sheetmetal that VW says is all new except for the roof panel. The new look—which Volkswagen oddly calls “coupe-like”—addresses current customers’ biggest gripe about the outgoing model: its boring styling.
Thus VW’s German design studio gave the car more bodyside creases; a bluff, SUV-like front end; and a rather tasteful rear-end treatment. Indeed, while the whole is attractive enough, the rear angle is the car’s best, with the “Passat” wordmark spread out and spanning the trunklid between the taillamps; a visually interesting stamping where several creases terminate at the upper corners; and, on the R-Line at least, a diffuser-like element placed between rhomboid exhaust finishers. The back looks clean and classy, and is particularly well resolved.
The interior is as expansive as before, with tons of rear leg- and headroom, as well as decent forward and rear sightlines. The dash and instrument cluster are new, and soft-touch materials can be found in most places fingers and elbows will contact. Harder plastics aren’t difficult to find, but they at least look okay.
The new design should satisfy the aesthetes in VW’s focus group, who also confirmed that they were just peachy with the cushy, comfy, and freeway-optimized driving experience of the outgoing car. This finding is perhaps true, but it also serves as convenient justification for keeping the American model on the same platform as before. It makes sense to reduce costs given the decline of the sedan, but it’s worth noting the Chinese market—which previously had essentially the same car as ours—now gets its own roomy Passat on the more modern and better-driving MQB architecture, which serves under myriad models across the VW Group empire.
Yet while enthusiasts and fans of automotive progress—groups to which we belong—may care about the new Passat’s old mechanicals, people who prioritize feature content will not. Volkswagen says it took the money it might have spent moving the car to MQB and sunk it into more equipment. Newly standard on the 2020 model are blind-spot monitoring, front brake assist, LED exterior lighting, infotainment voice control, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, and satellite radio. One USB charging point is located up front, while rear riders get two. Standard safety features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front collision mitigation with pedestrian monitoring and automatic emergency braking. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic park assist.
The trim levels include S, SE, SEL, R-Line, and Limited, although the latter is a launch-only trim. All 2020 Passats will be powered by a carry-over 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making the same 174 horsepower as before. It does get a torque bump to 207 lb-ft, an increase of 23. The sole transmission is a six-speed torque-converter automatic. Using the previous bones means there are no means for electrification of any kind—not even mild hybridization—or all-wheel drive, so they won’t be available. Nor will the Passat have items such as the all-digital gauge cluster offered on MQB-based cars like the littler Jetta.
The Chattanooga, Tennessee–built Passat looks new but likely won’t drive all that new, which probably will be fine with the customers Volkswagen intends to court primarily using value. Pricing hasn’t been finalized, but the target is the same or slightly lower than before, so expect the 2020 VW Passat to start around $25,000 when it goes on sale next year.

But VW says that it still believes in auto shows and that it still believes in sedans, so here we are.
And there we were, in downtown Detroit for a private viewing of the car in R-Line trim. We weren’t allowed to take pictures and official images will have to wait a while, but these sketches provide a decent understanding of how the car looks if you can envision it with an actual amount of tire, far smaller wheels, and much more wheel-to-fender gap. The sheetmetal, VW says, is all new except for the roof panel, addressing current customers’ biggest gripe about the outgoing model: its boring looks.
Thus VW’s German design studio gave the car more bodyside creases; a bluff, SUV-like front end; and a rather tasteful rear-end treatment. Indeed, while the whole is attractive enough, on our brief viewing the rear angle is the car’s best, with the “Passat” wordmark spread out and spanning the trunklid between the taillamps; a visually interesting stamping where several creases terminate at the upper corners; and, on the R-Line at least, a diffuser-like element placed between rhomboid exhaust finishers.
