Both provide under-floor storage in the back (measuring 45 x 20 x 7 inches in the Kia, 43 x 12 x 6 in the Subaru), but Kia lets you position the floor at the bottom of this well to get 7 inches more overall luggage height. Each also provides convenient under-floor stowage space for the optional roller luggage-area cover (our Kia lacked this $155 option).
Of course, if you plan to carry anything on the roof, the Subaru’s luggage rails stand proud of the roof by about 2 inches, sacrificing some aero slickness and potential wind noise so you can lash things to them (or use the $201 official accessory cross bars). Kia’s luggage rails are flush with the body, forcing purchase of the $310 cross bars or other accessories to use the roof at all. Both are rated to tow 5,000 pounds.

Acceleration Performance
While nobody drag races three-row crossovers, everybody moans if/when their new Conestoga struggles to climb I-70 to the Eisenhower Tunnel. In this contest we see a less powerful (260 versus 291 hp), heavier (4,626 versus 4,510 pounds) Subaru with taller gearing (by 18 percent in first gear) winning the drag race and—thanks to its turbocharged engine—heavily favored to crest Loveland Pass most easily. How? Credit the Soobie’s broader, flatter, slightly higher torque curve and continuously variable transmission, which maintains optimal gearing better than Kia’s eight-speed can. Our Subaru maintains a 0.2-0.3-second advantage through 70 mph. After that, the Kia charges ahead, cresting 100 mph 1.6 seconds sooner (in the unlikely event anybody cares). Refinement-wise, Kia’s big-lunged V-6 idles smoother and quieter than Subaru’s boxer four, but its calibration needs work. Throttle responsiveness is inexplicably non-linear with no turbo-lag to blame—especially in the Eco drive mode. Torque management around transmission shifts is also lumpier than expected.
Advantage: Ascent
Ride & Handling
Neither of these minivan stand-ins will embarrass an Alfa Stelvio, and the numbers show them pretty evenly matched in terms of braking distance, skidpad grip, and figure-eight performance. Both vehicles offer a soft brake pedal that doesn’t really bite until you’re deeper into the travel, and both lean a bit in the figure-eight, but on normal twisty roads they each feel reasonably well planted at sane speeds. There’s a sensation of greater unsprung weight clomping over bumps in the Kia, but impressive chassis rigidity prevents such events from resonating through the body. Ride quality is reasonably plush in both with a single driver onboard, and neither body roll nor head-toss is major concern for either.
Advantage: Draw
Off-Road Capability
It would be foolish to attempt the Rubicon Trail in either of these utes, but the Subaru holds a distinct advantage. Its X-Mode off-road button tailors the throttle, transmission, center-differential locking strategy, and stability control tuning for optimal poise when traversing off-road obstacles. It also provides hill-descent control. Our Ascent’s ground clearance and approach- and departure-angles are superior to the Telluride’s as well. Kia only offers a center differential lock and a snow-mode to improve traction. Furthermore, should you go off road and find yourself stuck, the Ascent offers two underbody shipping tie-down hooks in front and a ($499 optional) trailer hitch in back for recovery. And if you don’t order the hitch, there’s an eyelet that mounts to the rear bumper for recovery. Our Telluride SX offered no recovery points at all (a trailer hitch is available for $795). Sadly, neither offers a full-size spare, and both hang their mini-spares underneath, where they could be hard to access in a pinch off road.
Advantage: Ascent
Features and Amenities
Back to those first impressions: Our loaded Telluride SX comes with a lot more stuff than even the Touring grade Ascent can match. Things like a color head-up display, power-folding mirrors, a Qi wireless charging pad, cooled rear seats, and some less-ubiquitous features like a quiet-mode for the stereo (which plays only through the front speakers at up to volume-level 7), Safe Exit Assist (disables door handles if a vehicle is approaching), and a Driver Talk feature which broadcasts dad’s admonishments to the whiners in back. That having been said, the integration of some features is better in the Subaru, like the adaptive cruise and lane-departure warning systems. Subaru’s will follow vehicles in front closely enough to prevent cars from constantly filling the gap, and it delays beeping until you’ve strayed onto the line, whereas our Kia tended to panic earlier. The Kia’s rain-sensing wipers didn’t seem to sense rain at all, and an automatic speed-limit-following feature of the Highway Driving Assist system was difficult to engage and once engaged failed to lower our speed from 70 to 55 when such clearly marked and long-established limit-changes occurred. It’s cool to boast S-Class feature content, but it needs to work for full credit.
Advantage: Telluride
Value & Operating Costs
Load an Ascent up and it comes within $600 bucks of this Telluride, so there’s not much value advantage either way. There’s not a lot of data on long-term maintenance and repair costs for either of these two new entries, but the EPA seems to think you’ll spend less on gas in the Subaru (20/26/22 mpg versus 19/24/21), and with its larger tank, you might even coax 500 miles between fillups in the Ascent (though 453 is as far as we’ve stretched ours). As a brand Kia has been out-ranking Subaru in recent JD Power studies, and when things do go wrong with either vehicle the Kia warranty will cover you longer.
Advantage: Telluride
Conclusion
So that’s three for Ascent, three for Telluride, and one draw—a photo-finish for this early, quick back-to-back matchup. You might reasonably call this contest for the Telluride on the strength of its cargo capacity, impressive feature content, and bold, striking design (several SoCal staffers have been stopped and engaged in conversation by awestruck strangers). We’re calling it for the Subaru in view of its superior acceleration, off-road advantages, and more comfortable seating. And we’re itching to watch things shake out in a rigorous Big Test of all players.

2021 Toyota Sienna minivan goes hybrid-only with a radical new design

It’s been over a decade since the current, third-generation Toyota Sienna minivan debuted, and in recent years, it’s grown a bit stale, overtaken by newer rivals like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. But Toyota on Monday officially unveiled the new 2021 Sienna, which has been redesigned from the ground up and is gunning for the minivan segment crown. This fourth-generation Sienna was designed by CALTY’s Newport Beach, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, design teams, but it looks wholly Japanese. Toyota describes the new Sienna as “bold, sexy and provocative,” and says the front end’s massive grille was inspired by the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train. More than anything, it reminds me of the awesome, boxy, overstyled JDM minivans that we don’t get in the US.
I don’t think the Sienna looks as outright aggressive as other recent Toyota models, and that’s a good thing. The bulging rear fender is lifted from the Highlander but looks more natural and soft here, and there are a number of nice, subtle surfacing changes like the lines coming off the LED headlights. The rear is a bit more angular, with slim LED taillights and a lot of creases, and the tailgate has a slight whiff of a ducktail spoiler. An XSE model (the one shown in red) gets a sportier body kit, dark 20-inch wheels and different interior trimmings.

Toyota gave the interior a radical overhaul, too. The automaker says minivan owners don’t want to feel like they’re driving a bus, so the wide dashboard is more similar in design to the brand’s SUVs. It’s got a high-mounted infotainment display and a nice mix of colors and materials, and it looks more upscale overall. The biggest change is a huge “bridge console” between the front seats that’s connected to the dash, which Toyota says is positioned for better ergonomics and comfort. That console offers cup holders, a wireless phone charger and some additional storage compartments, while the open area underneath is large enough to fit a purse or a backpack.
But I’m most interested in the second row of seats. The new Sienna has available as an option Super Long Slide captain’s chairs, which can slide up to 25 inches fore and aft. These reclining seats can be equipped with built-in ottomans, too. Lower trims get three-across seats in the second row with a stowable middle seat. On the top trims the seats are covered in leather with both heating and ventilation for the front two occupants, while the second row can be heated. (The second-row seats aren’t removable and can’t fold, though, due to integrated side airbags.)

New platform, new powertrain
The new Sienna rides on Toyota’s modular TNGA-K platform, the same one underpinning cars like the Camry, Avalon and Highlander. Compared with the 2020 model, the new generation is 3.1 inches longer overall and rides on a 1.2-inch-longer wheelbase, and it’s slightly wider and a little lower in height. Toyota worked to make the new Sienna quieter and less affected by external vibrations, as well.
For the first time, the Sienna is available as a hybrid — and only as a hybrid. The sole powertrain is the same basic setup found in other Toyota hybrid models like the RAV4, using a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors and a battery pack mounted under the front seats. The Sienna’s hybrid system puts out 243 total horsepower, 53 hp less than the current model’s V6 engine. But power isn’t the point: Toyota says it estimates the 2021 Sienna will get 33 miles per gallon combined, way better than the 21 mpg that the 2020 Sienna gets. It also bests the Odyssey and Pacifica, both of which use V6 engines and get 22 mpg combined.
Toyota wanted the Sienna’s interior to feel less like that of a bus.

Not giving the Sienna a plug is intentional, Toyota says, and there are no plans for a PHEV version. A lot of Sienna owners are repeat customers, so the new one needed to feel familiar, with no need to plug it in to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition to the standard three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, the 2021 Sienna has a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for all hybrid components including the battery.
All-wheel drive is an option on all trim levels, with the system using a separate electric motor for the rear wheels instead of a traditional transfer case and driveshaft (no word on if it adds any extra horsepower). It’s able to send up to 80% of torque to the rear wheels, and Toyota says the all-wheel-drive model is more agile in the corners. I expect the AWD Sienna to get slightly worse fuel economy than the FWD model, though Toyota hasn’t released official numbers.

The 2021 Sienna has multiple driving modes including one for EV-only operation (for very short distances at low speeds), and there’s an adjustable regenerative braking feature that mimics the act of downshifting, ideal for hilly terrain. A new Predictive Efficient Drive feature remembers driving habits, road conditions and repeated routes to optimize when the battery is charged by the hybrid system. This feature is also found in the new 2021 Venza hybrid.
Like the current Sienna, the new one is able to tow up to 3,500 pounds, and it has an available 120-volt AC outlet and 1,500-watt inverter to power gear and accessories. Toyota will offer accessories from Yakima that have been designed for the Sienna including a bike rack, cross bars and a rooftop carrier. Who needs an SUV when you have a minivan?
I don’t think it’s a stretch to call this the best-looking Sienna ever.

Segment-first tech and features
More than anything, minivans are all about interior functionality, and the 2021 Sienna has it in spades. There are as many as 18 cup holders, six more than the maximum offered by the 2020 model. Standard equipment for every Sienna includes power sliding doors, auto up/down windows, three-zone automatic climate control and second-row sunshades. Climbing the trim level ladder — LE, Limited, XSE and Platinum — adds features like kick-activated sliding doors and power tailgate, four-zone auto climate control, a sunroof, sunshades for the third row and a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel that’s also heated. The Limited trim gets a built-in vacuum and storage box, while the Platinum replaces the box with a refrigerator.
The “base” infotainment setup is a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and SiriusXM capability, six speakers and seven USB ports. Moving up in the trim levels adds HD Radio, onboard Wi-Fi, navigation and a 1,200-watt JBL audio system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer. There’s an available 11.6-inch rear entertainment system with 1080p resolution and an HDMI input, a remote controller and a pair of wireless headphones. A 7-inch screen in the gauge cluster can show hybrid system info, while an optional 10-inch head-up display can project navigation info, as well.
The new Sienna is longer, lower and wider than before.

Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver assist features is standard across the board, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning with steering assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Every 2021 Sienna has 10 airbags, including curtain airbags for all three rows and the aforementioned side airbags built into the first and second-row seats. A digital rearview mirror and a 360-degree camera with a curb view are new options, and there’s also a rear-seat occupant reminder system.
Toyota hasn’t released any pricing yet, but the Sienna will go on sale toward the end of the year and will continue to be built at Toyota’s plant in Indiana. It will have to face still-tough competition in the form of the face-lifted Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey and an upcoming next-gen Kia Sedona. Despite being in the 6th and final year of its 3rd generation, the Toyota Highlander was the best-selling 3-row crossover in the U.S. last year. So obviously, priority #1 for the 4th generation Highlander is: don’t mess it up! Let’s see what other priorities Toyota has for the all-new Highlander.
The all-new 2020 Toyota Highlander has arrived, facing stiffer competition than ever before. But, what is it about the Toyota Highlander that has kept it atop the sales charts for so many years? It certainly wasn’t the first 3-row crossover, sporting just 2-rows when it debuted in 2001; but adding an optional 3rd row for 2004 when designers correctly perceived that that was where the segment was heading. It was however, the first hybrid 3-row vehicle of any kind, when the Highlander Hybrid was launched a year later. And the new Highlander follows a familiar powertrain trail, with some slight deviation.
The base 2.7-liter I4 is no longer in the mix, but the 3.5-liter V6 carries over from last year, outputting the same 295-horsepower and 263 lb-ft. of torque. 
A hybrid returns as well, but it switches from a V6 to a smaller I4 engine. The now 2.5-liter combines with battery power for a 243-horsepower rating. That’s down considerably from the 306 of before, but as you can imagine, fuel economy is up just as significantly.
The V6 gets an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid works through a CVT; and as before the all-wheel-drive systems are unique. Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Vectoring system for the V6; rear-mounted Electronic On-Demand all-wheel-drive for the Hybrid.
Noteworthy, is that the new hybrid design, no longer requires all-wheel-drive; which also improves fuel economy. Toyota claims 35-Combined, which is a 24% increase from before. V6 Government Fuel Economy Ratings, for all but base trim, are 20-City, 28-Highway, and 23-Combined for front-wheel drive; all-wheel-drive mostly the same except for 1 less MPG on the highway. 
Now, we spent some early drive time with both powertrains in the great state of Texas; and found that each has a unique character. The new hybrid may be down on power, but the engine is very responsive. Chances are, you won’t miss the V6. The CVT does produce some droning engine noises, at times, but we’d put up with it, considering 600-miles between fill ups are possible.
The V6 feels as strong as ever, and its 8-speed does a good job of managing power without being overly shift-happy. Ride quality for both remains on the softer side; and at times the Highlander can feel like a bigger vehicle than it is.
A sportier, more tautly sprung Highlander XSE may correct that when it arrives this fall. Indeed, Toyota has gone to great strides recently to make their mainstream vehicles look and drive more exciting. Highlander is no different, as the word “bold” can be found throughout the press release. 
So, the new exterior design does stand out a little more than before; and like every generation before it, it has gotten incrementally larger as well. The biggest increase comes to both overall length and wheelbase, which both grow by 2.4-inches; all to the benefit of rear seat passengers, and really, here it’s all about the comfort and family features. That comfort abounds in all seating positions; 2nd row seats can be bench or Captains, depending on trim level. 3rd row access is good, but there’s still not quite adult size room back there. Behind it, is a good 16.0 cubic-ft. of cargo space; 48.4 behind the 2nd row, and a max of 84.3 with all seatbacks folded.  
Towing capacity is 5,000-lbs. for the V6; 3,500-lbs. for the hybrid. New for this year are softer materials and better soundproofing, as well as the biggest infotainment screen yet for a Toyota, 12.3-inches; available to replace the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen. Both the screen and control pod are mounted very high into the dash; it’s a great new design, both aesthetically as well as, for usability. 
And finally, safety features are as plentiful as you might expect.
V6 Pricing starts at $35,720 for a base L model, passing through LE, XLE, and Limited, to arrive at Platinum, which starts at $47,970. Adding all-wheel-drive ranges from $1,600 to $1,950, depending on trim. The Hybrid is available in all trims except for L; starting with LE, at $39,320, with similar pricing for all-wheel drive.
So, while everything has changed, nothing has changed. The 2020 Toyota Highlander continues to deliver everything families are looking for in a package that looks better than ever. So without a doubt, when it comes to the Highlander, the Toyota faithful are gonna keep on lovin’ you.

Comma.ai launches Comma Two, a $999 kit that imbues cars with assisted driving features
Two years ago, analysts predicted that upwards of 10 million self-driving cars would hit the road by 2020. They weren’t the only ones — in 2015 and 2016, respectively, The Guardian and Business Insider proclaimed that people would become “permanent backseat driver[s],” riding in fully autonomous cars from 2020 “without needing any interaction from [drivers].”
Fast forward to today. Despite assurances that as many as 8 million driverless cars will be added to the road in 2025, even operations like that of Alphabet’s Waymo have yet to expand beyond selected metros. The reasons are regulatory as well as technological in nature, but expense plays a role. Conservative estimates peg the cost of outfitting cars at between $100,000 to 250,000 per car.
So why not go the do-it-yourself route? That’s the question George Hotz posed five years ago — he’s the American hacker best known for developing exploits that targeted Apple’s iOS operating system and reverse-engineering Sony’s PlayStation 3. In September 2015, Hotz founded Comma.ai with the goal of developing a semi-automated system — OpenPilot — that would improve cars’ visual perception and electromechanical motor control. Unlike most full-stack solutions in testing, it’s intended to replace OEM advanced driver-assistance systems, effectively imbuing cars with self-driving capabilities.
For the first time in its history, Comma.ai has an official presence at the Consumer Electronics Show. The company this week invited members of the press (including VentureBeat) to test-drive the latest version of its system — and to show off the Comma Two.
OpenPilot
OpenPilot’s development had a bit of a rocky start. The first version’s reveal in a Bloomberg article and video prompted a cease-and-desist letter from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which accused Comma.ai of testing a self-driving car in the state without a license. Subsequently, OpenPilot was packaged into a shippable device dubbed the Comma One, which again ran afoul of the authorities because of noncompliance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Under pressure from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, Comma One was canceled, and Comma.ai open-sourced OpenPilot on GitHub.
Much has changed. In the roughly three years since Comma.ai made OpenPilot available to the public, over 1,500 users have racked up more than 14 million autonomous miles collectively, half of which were driven autonomously. (That’s up from 10 million miles as of May 2019.) Moreover, they’ve forked the GitHub repository over 2,300 times, adding features like automatic lane change and support for older Tesla, Chrysler, and Jeep models.
Comma Two
Comma.ai previously sold the Eon Devkit, a self-contained and windshield-mounted modified OnePlus phone. It started at $599, and once OpenPilot was installed to it, it automatically recognized car models by analyzing CAN network traffic. (The presence of certain CAN messages and their lengths is an indication of the model year, car brand, car model, and trim.) Companion devices dubbed the Panda and Giraffe plugged into cars’ OBD-II ports to track RPMs, MPG, cornering G-force, battery life, and more, and to provide access to the communication buses and enable the Eon to interface with the car.
The Comma Two replaces the Eon, but it retains all of the Eon’s features and then some. That said, it ditches the Panda for a single-cord solution, and it’s slightly pricier at $1,000 (though it’s available on a payment plan through Affirm).
The first batch of 300 units are available for purchase today. They’ll begin shipping later in the month, Hotz says.
The Comma Two is powered via OBD-C as opposed to by battery, which Hotz says was a top complaint among current Eon owners, and it has a larger mount as well as a custom fan-based hardware cooling solution. Like the Eon, which used a camera to recognize drivers’ faces and decelerate if it detected those drivers were distracted, the Comma Two performs facial recognition. In point of fact, it’s in improved in that it leverages two infrared sensors as opposed to an RGB sensor, enabling it to work during nighttime.
Other highlights include front and back cameras, as well as a fourth CAN bus to connect the OBD-II port and a low-power mode that automatically shuts off the Comma Two after three days to save car battery.
The Eon was equipped with cellular service and a SIM card supplied by Comma.ai. Data was unlimited (though capped to 512Kbps), and users could spring for Comma Prime if they so chose, a $24 per month service that enables remote access (via T-Mobile) from anywhere and online storage of 14 days’ worth of drive data (compared with the standard three days). The Comma Two also taps cellular for connectivity and plays nicely with new and existing Comma Prime subscriptions, and it comes with a year’s worth of storage.
By default, OpenPilot uploads driving data in real time from the road-facing camera, CAN, GPS, inertial measurement unit, magnetometer, thermal sensors, and operating system to Comma.ai’s servers for machine learning training and development purposes. Much of this data can be accessed locally through the Comma Connect app for iOS and Android or through Explorer, an online dashboard of recent drives from which disengagements (i.e., instances when a driver took control from OpenPilot) can be annotated to help improve the system.
From within the app, Comma Two owners can remotely wake up the Comma Two and snap a picture from either the front- or rear-facing cameras. Additionally, they’re able to switch among multiple units on the fly and to view their real-time geographic locations.

Equally critically, OpenPilot isn’t capable of fully autonomous driving on all road types in all conditions. It can currently handle lane centering on roads without clear marking thanks to machine learning algorithms trained with user data, and it can maintain a safe follow distance and drive in stop-and-go traffic without supervision.
But it’s complicated. On all supported cars, OpenPilot’s automated lane centering and lane keep assist replace the stock systems. Only on specific supported cars does the system’s adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning slot in for default, however, and on no model does OpenPilot take over things like auto high-beam, blind spot warning, and side collision warning.
Driving experience
So how’s the driving experience with the Comma Two? “Smooth sailing” sums it up. OpenPilot indeed maintains its lane position even when the markings aren’t obvious — or aren’t visible. In a construction site with cones on either side and on an unpaved road without dividing lines, we watched OpenPilot deftly keep centered and maintain a comfortable following distance from the car in front of it.
It doesn’t much matter whether the road ahead is straight or severely curved. OpenPilot used to scrape OpenStreetMap for road curvature and traffic data, but it doesn’t any longer — now, it’s smart enough to calculate the trajectory in real time and to ensure it doesn’t speed along that trajectory too violently.
In this respect, OpenPilot is akin to Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, Volvo’s Pilot Assist, and GM’s Super Cruise, the last of which is one of the few systems that offers hands-free driving thanks to an eye-monitoring infrared camera. But in contrast to Super Cruise, which only engages on about 130,000 miles of U.S. and Canadian highway that GM has mapped, OpenPilot theoretically works anywhere there’s a discernible road.
OpenPilot can change lanes automatically, but it requires signaling from drivers before it does so — they have to first switch on a turn signal and nudge the steering wheel in the direction they’d like to go. It smoothly merging while keeping pace with the traffic ahead in our brief experience. But Hotz noted that OpenPilot won’t prevent lane changes when cars are to the immediate left or right, in the Comma Two’s blind spot.
Of course, Comma Two and OpenPilot can’t anticipate every situation. An SUV rear-ended a hatchback during our driving demo, forcing Hotz — who was behind the wheel — to tap the brake and disengage the system. And OpenPilot doesn’t handle things like red lights or stop signs — at least not yet.
Safety
Whether OpenPilot can be considered truly safe is a semantics question, in part. The driverless car industry lacks an agreed-upon metric for safety — Noah Zych, head of system safety at Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, told Wired in an interview that miles traveled isn’t a particularly insightful measure without context like location. Derek Kan, U.S. secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, echoed that sentiment in remarks at a conference two years ago.
Companies like Intel’s Mobileye and Nvidia have proposed mathematical models that aim to codify good habits like giving other cars the right of way. Essentially, they’re decision-making policies in a motion-planning stack that monitor unsafe actions by analyzing real-time sensor data.
Comma.ai has a safety model of its own, which Hotz said involves several forms of regression testing. Commits aren’t merged to the OpenPilot codebase before they’ve met the test suite’s muster.
This aside, Comma.ai problematically hasn’t committed to regularly publishing any sort of statistics beyond miles driven, like disengagements or accidents. California’s Department of Motor Vehicles mandates that all companies testing autonomous cars report disengagements, but because Comma.ai doesn’t have a permit to test cars, it’s exempt from this requirement.
Hotz for his part asserts that the infrared sensors in Comma Two will improve safety substantially, as will the onboarding video customers are required to watch before they launch OpenPilot for the first time. On the subject of the former, a warning appears on the Comma Two’s screen if a driver diverts their eyes from the road for four seconds, and after six seconds, OpenPilot disengages and begins to slow down. (Unclicking the driver-side seat belt or opening the car door also disengages the system.)
For what it’s worth, we encountered only one disengagement — Hotz’s stop to avoid the accident — over roughly 7 miles and 25 minutes of driving  “We pushed on nuance [with this latest version of OpenPilot],” said Hotz. “Intersections have no lane lines — it’s unclear where you should go. [OpenPilot] follows the path that the human would follow.”
Backend improvements
On the backend side of the OpenPilot equation, new is a simulation environment called the Small Offset Simulator that loads in real-world routes and simulates deviations of them. “You can’t just take a lot of data and train a model to mimic the data, because that model doesn’t realize that if it takes action, the world will change,” said Hotz. “The only way to really do that is to build a simulator.”
Using a technique called projected geometry and generative adversarial networks (GANs), or two-part AI models comprising generators that synthesize data samples and discriminators that attempt to distinguish between the synthesized samples and real data, the simulator redraws scenes meters to the left or right or with curvature and other perturbations. Hotz said that the models within the Small Offset Simulator are now training on 200,000 minutes of driving data collected by Eon users.
It’s similar — but not quite the same — as the simulation environments deployed internally by Uber, Waymo, and others. GM’s Cruise, for instance, leverages a replay approach that involves extracting real-world sensor data, playing it back against the car’s software, and comparing the performance with human-labeled ground truth data. Cruise also engages in planning simulation, which lets the company’s data scientists create up to hundreds of thousands of variations of a scenario by tweaking variables like the speed of oncoming cars and the space between them.
Future developments
Going forward, Comma.ai plans to release new hardware on roughly a yearly cadence — Hotz believes its business model of selling devices at profit and eating the cost of software development is sustainable. (Comma.ai has raised $8.1 million in venture capital to date across two funding rounds, the most recent of which closed in April 2018.) As for OpenPilot, achieving a better end-to-end driving experience remains an acute area of focus for the engineering team.
“What we want to do is move away from [lead car following] and move to an end-to-end longitudinal [model],” he said. “One of the problems we as a company have trying to convey is, when it works well, you don’t even notice it. Our company mission is to solve self-driving cars while shipping intermediaries.”
But Comma.ai isn’t discouraging rivals from cloning its hardware and piggybacking off of OpenPilot. In fact, Hotz encourages it, just as he encourages those with proprietary solutions to compete with Comma.ai.
One such challenger — former Yahoo CTO John Hayes’ Ghost Locomotion — emerged from stealth last November promising an aftermarket self-driving kit to retrofit existing cars. Another — Cambridge, U.K.-based Wayve — claims its driverless cars self-improve by learning from safety driver interventions. Mobileye doesn’t sell a consumer product, but like Comma.ai, its driverless tech leans on cameras for autonomous decision-making. And then there’s Tesla, which recently release a preview of an active guidance system (Navigate on Autopilot) that navigates a car from a highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and making lane changes.
Hotz is unconcerned. “Mobileye is the Windows [of autonomous driving] that’s going to do Microsoft-style business development deals with big companies, Tesla’s the Mac that’s going to ship sexy hardware to consumers, and we’re the Linux,” he said. “Everybody should use us for whatever they want.”
