2021 GMC Sierra 1500 and HD First Look: Towing Upgrades, Cheaper Diesel

Just two years after the GMT T1XX-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups launched, GMC is stirring the pot with useful new features designed to relieve some of the stresses of towing a trailer. That’s a great place to innovate, given that more than half of Sierra 1500 owners and 90-plus percent of Sierra HD owners report towing regularly. And there are a few other upgrades coming for 2021 as well.

Trailer Length Indicator

Flip on the turn signal of a 2021 GMC Sierra and the center display will show a blind-spot view of the side you’re heading toward, just like on lots of Genesis, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia vehicles, but GMC will shade the road surface in red hashmarks to indicate the area covered by the trailer (actually, twice the length of the trailer, for safety). If you can see a vehicle in this red-hashed area, better wait until it goes by or drops back out of this danger zone before changing lanes. The various bed, tailgate, and side-mirror cameras used to stitch together the 360-degree overhead view also inform this system as to the length of the trailer. The driver need not measure and enter any info to activate this system.

Jack-Knife Alert

Those same cameras keep a close eye on the proximity of the front corners of the trailer to the rear bumper of the truck and sound an alert (and/or vibrate the Safety Alert Seat) to caution the driver, who must then take action. The system will not apply the brakes to prevent a jack-knife impact.

Rear Trailer View Guidelines and Trailer-Angle Indicator

The existing Rear Trailer View system, which requires installing an accessory camera on the back of a conventional bumper-hitch box/camper/horse-type trailer and currently provides the Transparent Trailer function, gets augmented with those helpful guidelines to suggest the path the trailer is set to follow. Superimposed in the top right corner of the central display screen is an icon depicting the current angle of the trailer to the truck. This system is not currently programmed to work with gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer setups.

Rear Side View Enhancement

This split-screen view shows both sides of the truck and trailer split evenly down the screen when driving straight ahead. But when the truck begins to turn, the image showing the inside of the turn expands to fill more of the screen, so that you see the entire trailer and can monitor whether there’s any danger of running something over with the trailer wheels. For 2021 this view is available in reverse as well as drive.

Cargo Bed Zoom View with Bed Hitch Guidance

This new feature on heavy duty models promises to ease the task of aligning a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch, with the camera sensing the truck and trailer components that must align and drawing a line between them to help the driver steer the truck into position.

Other Enhancements to the GMC Sierra 1500

The 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-six-cylinder engine we’ve raved about gets a price drop of $1,500, which positions it just $995 above the 5.3-liter V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management.

Availability of the MultiPro “Swiss-Army” tailgate extends to SLE and Elevation trims for 2021 along with a handful of new paint colors. The off-road-optimized AT4 trim grade gets a new 20-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tire fitment along with an off-road high-clearance assist step. Oh, and the above trailering goodies come bundled in the Technology Package (it costs $2,125 on certain models for 2020).

Other Enhancements to the GMC Sierra Heavy Duty

The popular Denali trim grade gets a new Black Diamond Edition package, which includes 20-inch high-gloss black wheels, power-retractable steps, and other unique features. Denali heavies also get HD Surround Vision and Bed View camera technology as standard for 2021. The MultiPro tailgate becomes standard on SLE and there are three new colors. Echoing changes on the 1500 AT4, HD versions of the AT4 get the option of a high-clearance assist step and 18-inch Mud Terrain tires. The above trailer tech comes standard on Denali models (accounting for more than half of sales); SLT and AT4 buyers must select “HD Surround Vision with Two Trailer Cameras” to receive Trailer Length Indicator, Jack-Knife Alert, Rear Trailer View with Guidelines and Rear Side View. For the enhanced Cargo Bed View, they need to select “Bed View Camera.”

Nous voilà donc rendus à la sixième semaine de confinement. Évidemment, il n’y a toujours pas de voiture de presse à l’horizon pour vous faire part de mes impressions de conduite. Toutefois, il semble y avoir une lumière au bout du tunnel, une éclaircie à l’horizon. Déjà, quelques constructeurs prévoient remettre leurs usines en marche alors que les gouvernements tentent de remettre l’économie sur ses rails. Il se pourrait alors que l’on puisse reparler de bagnoles dans un avenir pas trop lointain.

Si, la semaine dernière, j’ai pu vous parler de l’industrie automobile telle qu’elle se présente actuellement, cette fois, je crois que d’ici quelques mois, ce blogue portera sur de nouveaux produits que les grands de ce monde espèrent nous présenter. Le nouveau VUS Bronco selon Motor Trend

- Bronco et Bronco Sport 2021 : forcément, on en parle de plus en plus et Ford nous a promis de les présenter avant le début de l’été. D’ailleurs, avec le nombre de photos dites «espion» déjà publiés sur plusieurs sites internet, on a une bonne idée de ce que ces deux VUS auront l’air. Juste pour vous rafraîchir la mémoire, le Bronco sera un VUS intermédiaire basé sur le châssis de la toute récente Ford Ranger (moteur à quatre cylindres turbo, c’est certain mais un V6 demeure probable) alors que le Bronco Sport sera une extrapolation de la Ford Escape mais avec des capacités de véhicule hors-route, un peu comme la Jeep Renegade fut une Fiat 500X pour excursions en sentiers (et ça fonctionne!). Et Ford vient d’annoncer que sa production devrait débuter dès les premiers jours de septembre…

La Cadillac CT5 V selon Car and Driver

- Cadillac CT5 V (et peut-être CT4V) Blackwing : Oui, GM a approuvé le nom Blackwing qui, au départ, devait être accolé à une version V8 DACT biturbo de la voiture mais, semble-t-il, ce sera plutôt le bon vieux V8 de 6,2 litres qui devrait se retrouver sous le capot de la CT5 avec une boîte auto à 10 rapports. Il pourrait y avoir un V6 de performance sous celui de la CT4.

- Lexus LQ : enfin une bonne nouvelle de la division de luxe Lexus de Toyota. Nous devrions voir apparaître un nouveau coupé plus élaboré, le LQ qui deviendra le porte-étendard de la marque. Soit dit en passant, Toyota/Lexus abandonnera sous peu sa berline GS, faute d’intérêt des consommateurs et, pour ce faire, il terminera sa production en proposant une version finale Black Line à ses plus fidèles amateurs.

- Lincoln MKE : bon, le nom peut être un peu faux puisque la division Lincoln de Ford a changé presque tous les noms alphabétiques de ses modèles par des véritables noms plus «poétiques» mais il faut s’attendre à ce que l’on connaisse des Lincoln à propulsion complètement électriques vu que cette grande marque est désormais étroitement associée à Rivian, cette «start-up» américaine de véhicules strictement électriques dans laquelle Ford a déjà investi quelque 500 millions $. Rivian créerait la plateforme, Ford/Lincoln, les carrosseries. Des autos? Des VUS? À suivre…

- NOTE : en dernière heure, Ford vient d’annoncer une annulation de son projet avec Rivian, du moins pour le moment, mais sa division Lincoln nous promet quand même des autos électrifiées…

- Ford F 2021 : à la fois facile et difficile à prédire, les impressionnantes camionnettes pick-up de Série F de Ford subiront quelques retouches esthétiques pour 2021 mais ce qui nous intéressera, ce seront les versions hybrides et électriques promises depuis longtemps et peut-être une version Raptor remotorisée avec le nouveau V8 Godzilla de Ford de 7,3 litres beaucoup plus puissant et moins énergivore (ce qui n’importera pas tant que cela puisque les experts croient que le prix du pétrole ne devrait pas augmenter avant deux ou trois ans!).

- Jeep Grand Cherokee 2021 : voilà un VUS qui est dû depuis longtemps. Il a vraiment besoin d’un rajeunissement complet. Tout récemment, FCA dévoilait en Chine une toute nouvelle version redessinée du Grand Cherokee. Mais ses dirigeants nous ont dit que ce ne serait pas la version nord-américaine. En effet, ce que le marché demande, c’est une Grand Cherokee à sept passagers…Pourtant, il existe déjà une Dodge Durango à sept passagers et ce VUS partage la même plateforme avec l’actuel Jeep Grand Cherokee…allez y comprendre quelque chose…

- Kia Sorento 2021 : le Sorento est un autre VUS des plus populaires qui a vraiment besoin d’un grand rafraichissement. On en a déjà vu sa révision esthétique et son intérieur redessiné. Selon certaines sources, les moteurs qui l’animeront seront un quatre cylindres de 2,5 litres ou un autre moteur semblable mais hybride de 1,6 litre. Ah oui! Et il sera toujours livrable en version à sept passagers.

- Hyundai Santa Cruz 2021 : voici un nom qui revient chez Hyundai mais cette camionnette intermédiaire ne sera pas un VUS ou un VUM comme on les connait mais plutôt une sorte de pick-up à la Honda Ridgeline mais en plus abordable. Basé sur une architecture de Santa Fe, je ne pense pas qu’il soit offert avec un moteur plus puissant que le quatre cylindres de 2,4 litres ou turbocompressé de 2,0 litres du Santa Fe. Mais, une chose est certaine, il est très attendu!

- Tesla Cybertruck 2022 : il n’y a rien de plus imprévisible que les décisions d’Elon Musk de Tesla. Toutefois, il semble que la production de son «original» Cybertruck soit confirmée. Évidemment, il s’agira ici d’un véhicule totalement électrique. Je ne sais pas comment je pourrai mettre la main dessus. Néanmoins, je m’attends à éventuellement conduire quelques autres camionnettes pick-up tout électriques dont le Rivian, le Lordstown, le GMC Hummer, voire même le F-150 électrique. Mais je ne crois pas que l’on voit les pick-up électriques détrôner les F-150 mécaniques, du moins, de sitôt…

- Land Rover Defender 80 2021 : celui-là, je l’attends de pied ferme. On en a vu un prototype au Salon de l’auto de Montréal en janvier dernier. Mais je ne m’attends pas à ce qu’il soit aussi «pur sang» que les anciens Defender ou Series II que plusieurs de mes amis possèdent. J’aimerais tellement pouvoir participer aux dévoilements et premiers essais hors-route de ce véhicule. Les accessoires extérieurs seront-ils faits d’un plastique aussi résistant que le métal? Faut voir les vues anticipées du film de James Bond, No Time To Die (https://youtu.be/QU32Wpk8v3w) pour s’en faire une idée…

- Alfa Romeo Tonale 2021 : le constructeur italien Alfa Romeo (du groupe FCA) devrait nous dévoiler ce VUM à traction intégrale mais à motorisation hybride sous peu. D’un dessin nettement différent des autres petits VUM qui se ressemblent tous trop, cet Alfa devrait aider le constructeur à enfin s’imposer sur le marché nord-américain!

- Nissan 350 ou 400 Z 2021 : pas certain de ce que j’avance dans le cas de cette voiture sport mais je sais que les concepteurs de Nissan travaillent à «rajeunir» la 350 Z dont le design date de plus de 10 ans. Du côté mécanique, je crois qu’ils feront appel au V6 turbo de 3,0 litres de l’Infiniti Q50 qui fera 400 chevaux (de là l’appellation 400 Z que lui donnent tous les observateurs). Le reste…qui vivra verra…

- Genesis GV80 2021 : voilà plusieurs fois que l’on en parle. Ce VUM intermédiaire sera avec nous sous peu, aussitôt que la COVID-19 sera «contrôlée». J’espère pouvoir le conduire au cours des mois qui suivent.

- Cadillac Escalade 2021 : ce grand VUS existe déjà mais je doute que GM du Canada ne le mette sur le parc des voitures de presse avant, encore, plusieurs mois. Ce serait intéressant de le comparer au Lincoln Navigator, son seul véritable concurrent qui est avec nous depuis quelques années déjà mais qui pourrait subir des retouches intéressantes.

- Buick GL-8 : ne cherchez pas cette auto chez nous, elle n’existe qu’en Chine, là où Buick a une superbe réputation. Le GL-8 est une fourgonnette, une configuration gravement délaissée par l’industrie américaine sauf pour FCA avec son duo Grand Caravan et Pacifica. Et à la voir, elle me donne l’envie de la conduire surtout sur une longue, une très longue distance. Parfois, je ne comprends pas pourquoi on abandonne de vraiment bonnes idées. Il faudrait, toutefois, se débarrasser d’abord des préjugés de jeunes qui aimaient traiter ce véhicule de «minoune pour les vieux» ou de véhicule que pour les familles alors qu’il n’y a certes pas de véhicule plus polyvalent sur le marché!

Each year, a 30-second commercial spot continues to climb and this year was no different. According to AdAge, brands had to cough up $5.6 million for a 30-second spot during Super Bowl LIV.

Couple John Legend & Chrissy Teigen won the Super Bowl car commercial award for their party throwing antics in Genesis' ad spot for the GV80 SUV. The "sexiest man alive" comment was cute.

Raiders running back rookie Josh Jacobs starred in a Super Bowl ad spot for Kia’s new Seltos SUV. Kia announced it will donate $1,000 for every yard gained in Super Bowl LIV to three charitable groups involved in youth homelessness, including Covenant House, Positive Tomorrows and StandUp for Kids. Nice!

2020 Genesis G90 First Drive: Finally a Standout

The Genesis G90 was always a car with an identity crisis. In a past life it was the Hyundai Equus before becoming the flagship executive sedan for the newly formed Genesis brand. As a flagship, the G90 was great car lacking any semblance of visual flair or style—in other words, it was a great luxury car for those hoping to blend in seamlessly with the background. With a slew of new cars and SUVs expected next year, the fledgling luxury automaker refreshed the 2020 Genesis G90, finally giving it the styling needed to help it stand out from the crowd.

Genesis’ efforts on the G90 redesign were almost entirely focused on its sheetmetal. Every line, crease, and corner—save for the doors and roof—was massaged and tweaked to give the G90 both more of a presence and more of a personality on the road. The two most controversial aspects of this big sedan’s new styling are bound to be up front and on its flanks. Its nose is now beset with Genesis’ new “Chest” grille and quad-LED headlights—the latter of which is split by another LED lighting element. In photographs, the grille and headlights combine to give the G90 a sort of frumpiness, but the nose job is far less polarizing in person. The G90’s new ’90s throwback wheels are bound to be controversial, too. Not everyone will appreciate the dish-and-web-spoke aesthetic, but the 19-inch wheels do a great job at visually filling the G90’s wheel arches—a difficult feat to accomplish as some luxury automakers are looking toward massive 22- and 23-inch wheel designs.

The rest of the changes to the 2020 Genesis G90 are relatively minor—which is probably for the best, considering a pre-refresh G90 beat out the BMW 7 Series (also pre-refresh), Lexus LS, and Lincoln Continental in our most recent big luxury sedan shootout. Inside, Genesis adds a splash of color to the G90’s cabin, in the form of five new interior color schemes (joining black and beige, for a total of seven) and two new wood trim options (for a total of four).

Underhood changes are even more minor. The G90’s base 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 are mechanically identical to the pre-refresh versions, though both are said to have revised tuning. The V-6 makes a healthy 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, while the V-8 produces 420 hp and 383 lb-ft. Both are paired an eight-speed automatic, revised to make it quieter than before. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional on both engines. The G90 3.3T is EPA-rated at 17/25/20 mpg city/highway/combined in both rear- and all-wheel-drive forms, while the G90 5.0 nets 16/24/19 mpg with rear-drive and 15/23/18 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Unsurprisingly, once you slip into the G90’s bank vault–quiet cabin and fire the car up, the 2020 model feels much like the version that preceded it. Both the G90 3.3T Premium and 5.0 Ultimate (both engines come with single-specification trim packages) drive impossibly smoothly. With any flagship sedan, going with the largest engine possible is usually a safe bet. The 5.0-liter V-8—the rare naturally aspirated engine in the segment—is almost old-school American-like in the way it’s tuned. The big 420-hp mill is powerful but slow to rev—a trait amplified by the gearbox’s long ratios and dislike of being rushed. The charmingly lazy V-8 only reveals its power with the pedal to the floor, letting out a muted, guttural roar as it pins you back in your seat.

Because the G90 V-8’s throttle response is so muted, the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 model surprisingly feels much like the 5.0. Power delivery is smooth, with just the slightest hint of turbo lag, and the engine offers up much of its 376 lb-ft of torque off the line at low speeds. Like the G90 5.0, the eight-speed auto in the G90 3.3T is tuned for smoothness and quietness over all else—shifts lack urgency, but they also seamlessly blend into the background as the transmission surfs wave after wave of torque. It’s just about the closest you can get to the experience of an electric car with an old-school internal combustion engine.

Aside from the subtle powertrain differences between the two G90s, both drive near identically. Steering is light and low-effort, but it’s communicative enough to always let you know what the front wheels are doing; brake pedal feel is tuned to help make every stop limolike. Body control and ride quality are similarly excellent, though the G90 doesn’t quite iron out bumps in the road in the same convincing manner as a Mercedes-Benz S-Class would.

Just like the drive experience, the 2020 G90 feels largely like the pre-refresh iteration inside—quiet, well-built, and sadly a bit boring. The added color and trim options do liven the G90’s cabin up somewhat, but the sense of sterility is inescapable, especially considering the new sheetmetal and comparing the G90’s cabin to rivals like the beautifully designed Lexus LC or Lincoln Continental Black Label.

Even so, the G90 does have a handful of neat features of its own, the party piece being the 22-way driver’s seat with a new “posture analysis” feature. Pressing the “Smart” button on the door cues up a new page on the G90’s 12.3-inch infotainment display. Input your height, weight, and inseam, and the seat will automatically adjust to a position that would make your orthopedist proud. Personally, I found the suggested position too close to the wheel and uncomfortable, but the system is also capable of providing visual feedback on your preferred driving position, which helps you find a comfortable medium between the optimal driving position and trips to the chiropractor.

Although lacking the automatic functionality and 22 levels of adjustability, the G90’s back seats are pretty nice, too. Both V-6 and V-8 cars offer up limousine levels of room and comfort with their own executive-style center consoles. The V-8 car has the nicer back seat package, though. Due to the monospec way Genesis builds G90s, it gets a supremely comfortable 12-way left rear and 14-way right rear seat unavailable on the G90 3.3T. The passenger-side seat is especially nice, notably with the front passenger seat folded forward against the dash, giving your legs plenty of real estate to spread out.

Overall, the 2020 G90 remains a tremendously compelling executive sedan. What this flagship lacks in an outright wow factor inside, it makes up for in both its quiet capability and its bargain-bin (for the segment) price. Prices of the G90 3.3T are expected to start around $71,000, while the G90 5.0 Ultimate will start around $75,00.

Back in 2017 I wrote: “Although we admittedly wish the G90 made more of a visual statement, the cabin is comfortable, luxurious, and filled with the latest creature comforts and semi-autonomous technologies. The drive is smooth yet engaging. And its value story is undeniable.” With the G90’s sheetmetal finally addressed, the rest all remains true to this day. More than ever before, the 2020 G90 is a credible alternative to the traditional flagship sedan, and it’s a compelling option for those hoping to stand out from the sea of S-Classes, 7 Series, and Audi A8s.
