How Good Is the 2020 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Off-Road?
Every pickup on the market offers four-wheel drive, or in the case of the Honda Ridgeline and some Chevrolet Silverados, all-wheel drive— learn the difference here. Nearly all of them also offer a specific off-roading package of parts, and a few offer extreme off-road variants. The 2020 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X model leans toward the more capable side of the standard off-road package, so we hit the trail to see if the Pro-4X parts and the new engine and transmission added up to dirt dominance.
Let’s take stock of the equipment we’re working with and why I think it’s a little more substantial than the usual off-road package. The party piece is the manually lockable rear differential, which is frustratingly only functional with the four-wheel drive in Low Range. I get the logic: if you’re in a situation where you need a locker, you probably also need low gears. That’s not always true, and the whole point of having a manual locker is deciding for yourself when to use it. This is likely a case of corporate lawyers trying to keep people from using it in four-wheel drive high or in two-wheel drive, lest we misbehave.
Also included in the Pro-4X package are Bilstein off-road shocks, a beefier Dana rear axle, skid plates under the engine, transfer case, and fuel tank, and Hankook Dynapro AT-M all-terrain tires on 16-inch alloy wheels. The shocks better handle big impacts off-road, while the skid plates protect important mechanical bits from getting bashed open on rocks. Those are both great, but you’re not going to get anywhere off-road where it’ll be a problem without the right tires, and a proper set of all-terrains is just what the weekend warrior ordered.

Broke home quarantine for a few hours this past weekend to socially isolate out on the Cleghorn Trail in the new 2020 Nissan Frontier. New? Yup. Sure, it still looks at least 5 years old, as one MT photographer told me when he couldn’t find it in a mostly empty parking lot, but it’s got a brand new 3.8L V-6 and 9-speed automatic transmission. Compared to the ancient 4.0 and 5A, it’s got more power and torque and with the 9A I expect it’ll get way better fuel economy when it’s tested. Why the new gear in a very, very old truck? It’s a trial run to work out any bugs before the all-new Frontier finally arrives next year with the same powertrain. Full review, plus an off-road evaluation, coming to MotorTrend.com probably next week. In the meantime, I can tell you if you like the simplicity and low price of the old Frontier and don’t need all the extravagances of a modern pickup, this is the best Frontier to buy since it first went on-sale in 2004. Yes, seriously. #nissanfrontier #frontierpro4x #pro4x #nissan

The Frontier’s Hankook all-terrains have beefy tread blocks that dig in off-road and give you the traction you need. On the other hand, they don’t handle as well on-road, but you buy the Pro-4X to get off the pavement. This is why I’d like more control over the rear locker, because the Frontier Pro-4X will go a good way down the trail before you need 4WD thanks to that grip.
To test that, my wife and I headed out to southern California’s Cajon Pass, where the Cleghorn Trail parallels Interstate 15 but takes three hours to get to where the freeway goes in five minutes. Cleghorn is a fantastic trail for testing factory off-roaders because it’s the dirt equivalent of a choose your own adventure book. The main trail can be done by a crossover with decent clearance and a good all-wheel drive system (though not some bad weather-only, front-drive most of the time systems). All along the trail, though, are side trails ranging from 100 yards to a mile long, ranging from moderately difficult to tough enough to challenge a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in places.
It’s not just clearance, though. The Pro-4X’s 8.9 inches under the front differential and 10.1 under the rear are right on par with the competition, but its approach, breakover (or ramp over), and departure angles are again on the more capable side. A 32.6-degree approach angle created by a short front overhang lets you drive up to larger obstacles and get the tire on them without dragging the nose and is almost as good as a Tacoma TRD Pro. Similarly, a 23.3-degree departure angle lets the rear tire come down off an obstacle without bashing the rear bumper on the ground. While the angle itself is as good as a Colorado ZR2 and Tacoma TRD Pro, the plastic mud flaps behind the rear tires on the Pro-4X are apt to catch and drag on obstacles.
Breakover angle is often the most important on a truck, because it determines whether you high-center or not.  SUVs have shorter wheelbases and have less to worry about, but trucks will test those skid plates if you’re not careful. The Pro-4X’s is average among direct competitors, while the more expensive trucks with factory lifts do better. A larger diameter tire than the 32-inch Hankook would help, but by the looks of it, you probably can’t get bigger than a 33 on there without running into clearance issues.
Out on the trail, the tires did Journeyman work providing plenty of grip in the sandy soil. For most obstacles the truck’s clearance and angles could handle, four-wheel drive high range was fine. We only used four-low as a means to employ the locking diff, handy when we got the suspension crossed-up with opposite corners touching the ground and in the air. The locker, combined with Nissan’s four-wheel drive-specific stability control system, allowed the truck to crawl over offset moguls by pushing power to all the wheels rather than letting the airborne wheels spin. The amount of wheel articulation was good for a factory off-roader, and we only lifted wheels on the toughest obstacles.
Even with all the right off-road parts, you still need to move the thing. For 2020, the Frontier gets an all-new 3.8-liter V-6 to replace the ancient 4.0-liter, and a nine-speed automatic to replace the equally old five-speed. The new engine makes 49 more horsepower and the exact same torque as the old one, and torque is what you need on the trail. The new transmission has a lot more gears to choose from with a much shorter first gear, plus shorter axle ratios, so you get more torque multiplication in two-high and four-high. This is part of the reason we didn’t need anything more than four-high for most of the trail. A change in the four-low ratio, though, gives you a slightly taller crawl ratio, so a teeny bit less torque is getting to the ground than before in four-low. That’s fine, though, because the Pro-4X has more than enough to pull itself up steep grades and over obstacles.
With good tires, a locker, and more than adequate torque and gearing, the angles are the limiting factor for the Pro-4X, and even they’re pretty decent for a factory job. You can work around them by picking your lines carefully and walking an obstacle before you dive in. Bring a spotter, and the Pro-4X will go places most pickup owners wouldn’t think to take a stock truck. If you’re not going to spend $40-50,000 on a hardcore factory off-roader like the Colorado ZR2 or Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, the Frontier Pro-4X is a better set of parts making for better capability than the typical four-wheel drive mid-size truck off-road package.

The 2019 Ford Ranger Packs Plenty for the Price
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that trucks have gotten uncomfortably expensive. While the memory of $30- and even $20,000 pickups remains fresh in their minds, most modern pickup-truck shoppers will be greeted at the dealership by bona fide luxe trucks. The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 that CarGurus recently reviewed cost more than $66,000, and a new Ford F-150 can crest $70,000 before you add a single option. With that in mind, we drove a 2019 Ford Ranger across four of New England’s six states to determine just how much value a midsize pickup can provide.
The Ranger Offers Ruggedness and Value
First and foremost, despite a $24,110 base price, the Ranger won’t always come cheap. Our test car rang in at $41,595. But that price bought us striking Lightning Blue paint, the FX4 off-road package, and a range of safety systems, including lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.
That said, the Ranger XLT SuperCrew 4×4 we drove didn’t feel overly modern, either. Shoppers who want their truck to feel rugged and ready for work will love the new Ranger, but shoppers who prioritize comfort will tire of its enthusiastic but unpolished ride. After leaving the truck outdoors overnight in some of Maine’s famous single-digit weather, we woke to discover that the Ranger’s sliding rear window (part of the $2,800 Equipment Group 302A) rattled incessantly when the car was cold. It took roughly an hour of driving before the brittle-sounding frame holding the window warmed up enough to quiet down the ruckus.
Tumblr media
The 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine delivered great power: 270 horses and 310 pound-feet of torque. The selectable 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system handled snow marvelously, and the Ranger felt as capable cruising along the highway as it did while trudging through rutted dirt roads. The 4-cylinder constantly roared under gentle acceleration, and it returned a mild 21.4 mpg across 653 (mostly) highway miles. That sort of performance didn’t wow us when we got to the gas pump, but it wasn’t too far off the EPA’s estimate of 20 mpg city, 24 highway, and 22 combined.
But an Even Better Option Is on the Way
Midsize pickups like the 2019 Ford Ranger and its primary competitors, the Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma, have become incredibly appealing for young, often urban-living, weekend warriors. They’re small enough to drive through a city but capable enough to load up with skis or bikes and take to the woods. Unfortunately, this segment has aged rapidly. The Colorado (and its corporate cousin, the GMC Canyon) debuted in 2015. The Tacoma was last updated in 2016. Even the Ranger, which arrived in the United States in 2019, has been on sale internationally since 2011 and was last refreshed in 2015.
Five years is a long time in the auto world, and that age shows, particularly inside these midsize pickups. The best-feeling option is likely the Honda Ridgeline, which can’t come close to the starting price of the better-selling Chevy, Ford, and Toyota.
Nissan is expected to reveal a refreshed Frontier in 2021 (the Frontier hasn’t been meaningfully updated for a whopping 15 years). Thankfully, competition breeds excellence, and we doubt Ford, Chevy, or Toyota will let Nissan run away with the segment. For now, the Ranger and the rest of the midsize pickup segment offer genuine usability and attractive prices. But if it were our decision, we’d hold out and see what the future brings.

2020 Jeep Gladiator Review: You Know You Want This Off-Roading Pickup
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon 4x4 Jan-Feb 2020 - Lisle NY Town Hall - Route 79
What you see is what you get with the 2020 Jeep Gladiator: It has the soul of a Jeep Wrangler SUV, which means it goes off-road. It has a pickup bed, which means it goes to and from Home Depot. And it has four doors and two rows of seats which (along with the pickup bed) means it’s more than 18 feet long, so even if the Gladiator goes everywhere, you can’t park it just anywhere.
The Gladiator rides alright, tows up to 7,500 pounds, and has a decent drivetrain. But highway handling is not great, wind noise is noticeable, and you have step up almost two feet to get in.  The cheapest Gladiator is $35,0o0, and the Gladiator Rubicon meant for serious off-roading tops $62,000. But if you can choose to get one, you’ll have fun.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon 4×4 – a serious off-road Jeep with a 5-foot pickup bed.
30 Inches Longer than Jeep Wrangler
Jeep Wrangler SUV.
Jeep dates to World War II and the first General Purpose (GP, pronounced geepee and eventually jeep) light 4×4 utility, the first civilian Jeep (CJ) in 1945, and pickups produced 1947-1992. There was a 10-year gap until the first new Jeep pickup truck concept vehicle was shown briefly in 2003, with adaptations teased and reteased for 15 more years until the Gladiator pickup finally arrived last year, a gap of nearly 30 years. Too long.
Compared to the four-door Wrangler it is based on, the Gladiator is 30 inches longer overall, 218 inches vs. 188 inches, with a wheelbase 19 inches longer for a truly comfortable legroom in the rear seat. The Gladiator also tows more and costs more, but just $2,000 more comparing entry model to entry model. Both have easily-owner-removable doors and tops, which makes both fun crawling over boulders or sand dunes in good weather, and louder and sometimes harsh in day-to-day highway driving. No surprise there. Still, 75 mph on the highway in the Gladiator feels better than 55 mph did in a Jeep a generation ago.
Center stack bristles with buttons and knobs. Lever on left controls four-wheel-drive. If you can’t find the electric window controls on the door, they’re here, in the very middle of the picture.
Jeep Gladiator On- and Off-Road
I test-drove the nearly top-of-the line Jeep Gladiator Rubicon 4X4, $62,020 including a healthy $1,495 freight fee from the Toledo, Ohio, factory. The Rubicon is the most serious off-roader in the line. To get in, you have to step up almost two feet. Don’t even think about wearing a skirt. (Damn. And here I am, stuck with this new leather mini – Ed)  The front windshield is essentially a flat piece of glass. The doors are rudimentary. The center console and stack bristle with controls for the four-wheel-drive system but if it’s initially confusing, just press the starter, pull back on the main shift lever, and off you go.
Around town the Gladiator drives reasonably well and you feel as if you’re sitting up high. (You are since it’s 75 inches high.) On the highway, the road and wind noise builds from the lack of sound insulation and the big, knobby 33-inch (diameter) tires on the Rubicon. The steering feels imprecise at speed, meaning you sometimes make repeated small adjustments to keep it centered in the lane. The bucket seats are pretty flat, and some adjustments are manual. The front left wheel well is so big, there’s no room for a driver footrest. On bad road surfaces, you feel the bumps, although there’s less pitching than on the Wrangler with its shorter wheelbase. The Gladiator uses the sophisticated coil spring suspension of the Ram 1500 pickup and that helps. Another nice touch is the damped tailgate that comes down smoothly, rather than banging open.
Off-ready tires on the Gladiator Rubicon.
Once you’re off paved roads, the Gladiator is in its elements. The Rubicon has 11 inches of ground clearance and fords 30-inch streams with the doors on. It has a 43-degree slope approach angle. The front breakover angle, the measure of how steep an angle you can approach without scraping anything, is 20 degrees. The rear departure angle is 26 degrees. Both are less than the Wrangler because of the longer Gladiator wheelbase and the pickup bed.
There’s nothing else like this among midsize pickups in terms of off-roading.  The Gladiator Rubicon employs a two-speed power transfer (between front and rear wheels), locking front and rear differential to improve traction, a disconnecting front sway bar (it raises off-road clearance), Dana 44 front and rear axles, and a 77.2:1 crawl ratio for low-speed travel. An Off-Road+ mode that modulates stablity control, throttle, and gear selection. In 4WD High, it’s dialed in for romping in sand; in 4WD Low, for traversing rocks and small logs.
All this from a 3.6-liter, 285-hp V6 engine and eight-speed automatic that gets to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds. A V6 diesel is coming, expected this calendar year; it’s down 26 hp versus the V6 but the 442 pound of torque tops the gas V6 by 70 percent. The EPA rates the gasoline Gladiator at 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, 19 mpg combined on regular fuel. The six-speed manual also offered is rating at 16/23/19. Expect the diesel to boost mpg by 2-3 mpg or about 10 percent. A Rubicon weighs a bit more than 5,000 pounds, about 500 pounds more than the competing Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro or Ford Ranger Lariat SuperCrew 4×4, 300lbs more than the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2.
Want to ride bareback (Ialmost)? Undo a couple bolts and each of the doors comes off in a few minutes. The top comes off and the windshield folds flat.
Jeep Gladiator Models
There are five Jeep Gladiator model variants, or trim lines. Altogether, there are enough options to make the top of the line loaded Gladiator approach twice the base price of the entry model.
Gladiator Sport, $35,040, including $1,495 freight. Four-wheel drive is standard, as is a six-speed manual, and reasonable 17-inch steel wheels with 245/75R17 all-season tires with all-terrain tires optional. Seating fabric is cloth. The UConnect 3 infotainment screen is a modest 5 inches diagonal, with eight speakers, and there is a remote USB port, but a bigger LCD is not an option, nor is Apple CarPlay or HD Radio. The instrument panel multi-information is a 3.5-inch monochrome LCD. Towing capacity with the better of two options packages is 7,650 pounds. A Torx toolkit is included to remove the doors in just a few minutes.  Skid plates, tow hooks, and a soft top are standard.
Gladiator Sport S, $38,240. The Sport S goes upscale a bit, with alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power windows, heated power mirrors, auto-on headlamps, keyless entry, and a security alarm. A optional 7-Inch Radio Group makes satellite radio
Upper trim lines include an AC jack, and it’s not an extra-charge option.
Gladiator Overland, $41,890.  It steps up to a 7-inch center stack display, UConnect 4, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and seven USB jacks. There are side steps, a 7-inch color multi-information display, 115-volt outlet, and garage opener. During 2019 production, this was the top end Gladiator focusing on comfort and smoother driving while still being able to match or beat most any all-wheel-drive vehicle off-road.
Gladiator Rubicon, $45,370. In addition to the serious off-roading features, it steps back down to 17-inch alloy wheels and offers optional driver assist features. Its top speed is governor-limited to 97 mph vs. 110 mph for other models.
Gladiator North Edition, $47,410. It’s the model for more comfortable cold weather driving. It has an 8.4-inch display with navigation, Alpine premium audio, cold weather group (remote start, heated seats, heated steering wheel), black hard top, and slush mats.
Gladiator Mohave, price TBA. Sold as a limited editon, it’s intended for higher speeds, up to 50 mph, in the low driving range. Most typically you’d be running sand dunes rather than creeping over rocks. It rides an inch higher than Rubicon and uses a different set of Fox shocks. The frame and suspension parts are even heavier duty to deal with a vehicle that might (correction: will, if you play hard) go airborne from time to time and land hard. The Max Tow towing package comes standard to get the more powerful cooling package. Pricing will be in line with the Rubicon-North Edition models, Jeep suggests.
The Gladiator comes with three or four serious tow hooks. The Gladiator Rubicon bumper is steel, allowing a winch to be added.
Options, Driver Assists Boost the Price
It’s the options that push the top Gladiator models into the sixties on pricing: higher-capacity tow package, LED Lighting Group, driver assist packages, a wireless Bluetooth speaker, forward-facing trail cam, three kinds of pickup bed covers, pickup bed cargo rails, premium alloy wheels, a modular hardtop (three pieces, separately removable), a hardtop liner for insulation, premium paints, premium audio, leather seats, and a winch-capable steel bumper. The eight-speed automatic raises the price by $2,000 alone.
Driver assists are options rather than standard. The Active Safety Group, $895, comprises blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. The Adaptive Cruise Control / Forward Collision Warning Package, $795, is what the name says. ACC goes down to 0 mph but will return to speed; it holds the car stopped for 3 seconds then disengages.  Lane departure warning / lane keep assist are not offered, nor is pedestrian detection.
There are two front airbags and two side airbags, but no side air curtains.
Bill Murray reprised Groundhog Day, this time in a Jeep Gladiator, during Super Bowl 54.
Gladiator Vs. the Competition
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator competes with several midsize trucks, most of which have an off-road version. They are, in order of end-of-2019 sales: Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator, Honda Ridgeline, and GMC Canyon. The Gladiator sold 40,000 units in 2019, its first year, but didn’t reach full output and sales until the second half when it sold 33,000 units, the peak month being a bit over 6,000 in October. Sales may pick up in the wake of the the Super Bowl: The Bill Murray / Groundhog Day ad featuring the Gladiator was seen as the best ad of the game. In its first year, the Gladiator named a bunch of truck of the year awards including North American Truck of the Year from NACTOY.
If you just want to take a 4×4 pickup onto a dirt or gravel road with ruts and the occasional rock sticking up a bit, they’ll all get the job done. Others will be better at highway driving, smoother, and quieter. What the Gladiator offers is the Jeep aura, off-road abilities that go from good to great. For now you’ve got a very long vehicle with a roomy cockpit (front and back), and a shortish pickup bed. Jeep suggests other Gladiator size configurations will come.
This is definitely a car you want your partner or spouse to understand and appreciate before you sign the papers. See if you can test-drive it a couple miles on an interstate, not just local rounds. The Gladiator is no Jeep Grand Cherokee (upscale two-row SUV) if you want a smooth ride, quiet cockpit, and soft leather upholstery. And the Gladiator is one step ahead of the Grand Cherokee in going way-off-road, which Grand Cherokee in turn is one step ahead of most all other all-wheel-drive cars. Jeep understands unpaved roads and obstacles.
For serious off-roading, or if this is not your only car, the Gladiator Rubicon is the best choice. You’ll easily pay in the mid- to high-fifties on list price once you check the options you want, perhaps top $60,000.  A more cost-effective Gladiator is the Sport S with automatic transmission, hardtop and insulating liner, the two driver assist / safety packages, the 7-inch (LCD) radio group with CarPlay and Android Auto, the less costly trailer tow package, and a convenience group package required by one of the other options. That’s $43,165 before the incentives, so you might well wind up paying under $40K (see below).
(If you want the nicest all-round midsize pickup, that’s the Honda Ridgeline, the most car-like pickup. The Toyota Tacoma is another good choice. Toyota, Ford, Chevy and GMC make off-roading versions of their pickups.)
If you’ve shopped for a Jeep Gladiator over the past several months, you may know Jeep dealers were marking up the Gladiator, especially the Rubicon, by as much as $10,000, sometimes $20,000 (asking, if not getting) at mid-year when the Gladiator starting arriving in quantity. By year’s end, the markups were gone. Now, it’s Jeep that’s giving back money: a $2,000 incentive for virtually all buyers, $5,000 at many dealerships, and, says CarsDirect, as much as $9,000 in a few cases. Some incentives excluded the Rubicon.
The bottom line on the Jeep Gladiator is that it’s a little rough as a highway cruiser and many contractors / tradesmen want a bigger bed for hauling stuff, but it’s great off-roading, and it has character in droves.

2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Changes, Specs and Engine
2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Changes, Specs and Engine – Precisely what about competitors’ a number of-tube versions, you may well ask? They value just a 1-miles per gallon reward and perhaps have got nothing at all. Only the GM diesel-driven is notably far better, at 22/31 miles per gallon (RWD) and also 20/29 miles per gallon (4WD). Nonetheless carrying out at a frequent 75 miles per hour in your freeway-gasoline-economy assessment, the Ridgeline overachieved its EPA variety, with 28 miles per gallon, which tied up the variety our company adhesive tape-documented with this last GM diesel choose-up. Oh yeah, and the Honda Ridgeline Awd is also commendably easy, as well as the Ridgeline is the quietest mid-size get our team has in fact examined.

2018 New York Auto Show Hits, Misses, and Revelations
NEW YORK, New York — The New York International Auto Show has hereby won the right to call itself the North American International Auto Show next year, as it has usurped the erstwhile holder of that title, Detroit, with more newsy and relevant car and truck unveilings. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Porsche all will be here again in 2019.
This year, New York has the usual fleet of new sport/utility vehicles, including such high-volume models as the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester. But there are actual autos—cars—here as well, including a Nissan Altima that proves the brand’s revived commitment to the midsize sedan segment.
And there is a concept car that has taken our breath away like no other concept, at Detroit, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, or even Geneva has, this year …
HIT: Genesis Essentia Concept
And the winner of the “Wait, that’s a Hyundai?” award goes to this breathtakingly beautiful concept car. What a work of art.
—Aaron Gold
Star of the show, and probably the auto show season. It’s exactly the sports grand touring (electric vehicle) design that Genesis needs in order to build up its luxury brand credibility.
—Todd Lassa
MISS: Cadillac XT4
The XT4 looks to be a solid ute with an efficient 2.0-liter engine, it has technology on par with the competition, and the interior looks to be well built. It’s just that it doesn’t move the compact crossover market in any real way. There’s nothing groundbreaking here. I know Cadillac is thrilled to have another crossover and it will likely sell well for them. But other than the Cadillac style, it’s just another in a crowded sea of offerings. The fact that the refreshed CT6 with its 4.2-liter twin-turbo V-8 took center stage at Cadillac’s New York show stand and not the XT4 speaks volumes.
—Mike Floyd
HIT: Cadillac XT4
Has there ever been a good small Cadillac? The former Standard of the World has been trying and failing for the better part of four decades, but it looks like they finally got it right. The XT4 is cute and playful, a little cheeky even, and yet it still has the dignity and stateliness of a proper Cadillac. The XT4 may prove be the first baby Caddy worthy of the name.
—A.G.
HIT: Cadillac CT6 refresh
Cadillac injected a good dose of Escala concept design language into the CT6’s facelift, while adding the CT6 VSport and the new twin-turbo V-8 options. I think it works. Cadillac’s successor to the Northstar V-8 has been an on-again, off-again proposition for more than a decade, as the luxury brand faced the question of whether it could credibly take on the Germans and Lexus (and now, Genesis) by sticking with the modern Chevrolet small block instead spending big cash on its own, overhead-cam V-8. The timing of its release isn’t great, but the low-volume, hand-built nature of the twin-turbo 4.2-liter suggests it will be an expensive and rare option. Now, if only Cadillac could do something about the sub-German interior quality.
—T.L
HIT: Cadillac CT6 VSport
When the CT6 first came out, I wrote a review challenging any 7 Series owner to take the twin-turbo V-6 CT6 for a spin. If they came back and said the Caddy wasn’t as good as their Bimmer, either they were lying or they didn’t know how to drive. The addition of a twin-turbo V-8 can only make this car better. Now if only Cadillac can do something about the snoozer styling…
—A.G.
HIT: Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Concept
There are a lot of compliments I can fling in the direction of the seven-set Volkswagen Atlas; “sexy” is not one of them. But now that I’ve seen the five-seat Atlas Cross Sport—whoa, Nellie. This new SUV-to-be combines the Atlas’ squared-off styling cues with the shape of the old Touareg. Love, love, love. What we saw here in New York is the concept version, but the Atlas Cross Sport is destined for production and I doubt it will look too much different. I can’t wait to see the real thing.
—A.G.
Or is it Atlas Sport Cross? Cross Atlas Sport? Hate the name, but as SUVs go, the new two-row 2020 VW Atlas is rather rakish for a sport/ute. It is to the three-row Atlas what the VW Arteon is to the Passat.
—T.L.
HIT: Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak Concept
Designed as a vision of how VW could potentially expand the Atlas lineup, the Tanoak’s massive mug screams truck, though the production model would likely have some functional limitations. It definitely looks cool, and given that the Atlas line is built here in the U.S., a truck version is not out of the question.
—M.F.
How do I love VW’s proposed pickup? Let me count the ways. First, I love the way the box cuts into the cab. It puts me in mind of the old Ford Explorer SportTrac, another sort-of pickup that wasn’t trying to look like a miniaturized F-150. I love the way the Atlas’ squared-off styling works on a pickup truck. And I love the fact that VW is being honest about this being a utility vehicle with a pickup bed, rather than a pickup, period. (Are you listening, Honda?) Volkswagen says they have yet to make a decision about putting the Atlas Tanoak into production, and they are gauging public reaction. Public, I implore you to react. I want this thing to happen.
—A.G.
MISS: Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak Concept
Well, you asked, VW. The company says its gauging public and press reaction, and is looking at clinic and sales data before its pickup truck concept gets a green light for production. The first sport-ute pickup was the Chevy Avalanche—remember that one? —and the only unibody, transverse-engine competitor, the Honda Ridgeline, typically does well in its first year (which means, maybe 35,000 units) until everyone who wants one has one, then it settles in below 20,000 per year. The latest Ridgeline AWD gets 18/25 mpg, not much better than the V-6, 4WD Chevrolet Colorado (17/24) or Toyota Tacoma (18/22), and the Chevy and Toyota are available with both four-bangers and RWD, so where’s the unibody truck advantage? While the VW Atlas Tanoak is a credible looking, nearly full-size truck, it’s not going to do much to utilize the Chattanooga plant’s capacity.
—T.L.
What in the heck is a Tanoak? I’ll give VW credit. I highly doubt that name was trademarked and it vaguely makes me think of trees, so there’s that.
—M.F.
HIT: Light up VW badge
VW showed this on their Atlas concepts. Please, Volkswagen, make this happen. Please.
—A.G.
REVELATION: Tanoak is a tree. Don’t name your pickup after a tree.
If you’re going to build the Tanoak, Volkswagen, and you probably will despite my objections, please, please change its name to something relevant to your brand: VW Atlas Chicken Tax Exemption.
—T.L.
HIT: Genesis G70
Three words: Manual friggin’ transmission.
—A.G.
We were still reveling in the stunning beauty of the Genesis Essentia when Hyundai’s nascent luxury brand unveiled its BMW 3 Series competitor, the G70. Already, the fluid, organic lines of the Essentia have translated to a production model. That should be no excuse for denying the Essentia EV production, however.
—T.L.
MISS: 2019 GMC Sierra AT4
This would have totally been on my “hit” list but for the wheels, which, like the Grinch’s heart, are two sizes too small.
—A.G.
REVELATION:  Something else for Bugatti?
I spoke with Stephan Winkelmann, who has bounced from his longtime role with Lamborghini to Audi and then to help launch Audi Sport, about what’s next from his current Volkswagen Group brand, Bugatti. As always with any exec, he wouldn’t talk specifics, but when I asked if there was room for something else coming for Bugatti beyond the Chiron variants, his non-answer (“I think the brand has a lot of opportunities to do more”) and grin spoke volumes. It seems silly to put Winkelmann in charge of a brand to simply oversee 500 Chirons being built. My money is on some sort of SUV, because of course.
— M.F.
HIT: Lincoln Aviator
When I first saw the design sketches of the Aviator, I thought, Oh, here we go, another Range Rover clone. Shouldn’t someone remind Ford that they sold Jag-Land Rover years ago? But after seeing the new Aviator in person, I changed my tune. This is a good-looking Lincoln with handsome proportions and a great interior. The promise of rear-wheel-drive is, well, promising. Lincoln is keeping mum on the powertrain specifics, only saying that it’s a twin-turbo engine, but if it’s anything like the 400-hp grin-generator in the Continental, then life with this Lincoln is going to be very, very good.
—A.G.
HIT: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
The present Corolla iM hatch looked decent, but it didn’t excite in any real way. The significantly reworked 2019 Corolla hatch has the potential to change that, thanks to its new TNGA platform underpinnings and Toyota’s new 2.0-liter engine mated to either a six-speed manual or CVT with a launch mode. No power ratings yet, but it should top at least 150 horses. Kudos to Toyota for keeping the hatch in the Corolla lineup. I hope it drives as good as it looks.
—M.F.
HIT: Nissan Altima
Looks like the Altima has picked up some of the Maxima’s mojo, and I love it. I’m sure some will disagree with me, but I think this is a great looking car inside and out. I can’t say I’m optimistic about the driving experience, not after the lackluster showing of the Rogue and Rogue Sport, but I’m hopeful that Nissan can pull some of that old-time magic out of its hats and make this Altima as good to drive as it is to look at.
—A.G.
It seemed Nissan had given up on sedans when the now-retiring Altima came out, and went straight-to-rental. But the new one, with its optional variable compression turbo four (replacing the V-6 option) and an interior that would have been considered premium a decade ago, indicates that Nissan is as dedicated to the future of its sedans as is Honda.
—T.L.
HIT: 2019 Toyota RAV4
Whoa. Wait. What? When I first saw the new RAV4, I figured it was an early April Fool’s joke. Nope—despite the fact that the current conservatively-styled RAV is selling like ecstasy at a rave (do either of those things still exist?), Toyota has taken the RAV4’s styling in a completely new direction—and what a stunner it is. Some of Toyota’s recent designs have been a bit awkward, but I think this one works, inside and out. In a way, it reminds me of the love child that might result from the coupling of a 4Runner and a Venza. That’s a good thing. Let’s hope the market agrees.
—A.G.
Toyota has split the RAV4 into two designs, both ditching the Camry-like nose. The Adventure series comes with a Tacoma-like grille that’s supposed to make you think you’re driving body-on-frame sport/utility, which doesn’t quite work on that level, though it does take a lot of the “cute” out of this cute/ute.
—T.L.
MISS: 2019 Subaru Forester
I know, I know—you don’t mess with success. Still, did Subaru have to make the new Forester look so much like the old Forester? Frankly, I’d be perfectly happy if the new car looked more like the first-gen Forester. Twenty years is long enough for a retro-mobile, right?
—A.G.
REVELATION: Subaru’s design “aesthetic
Look at the Mark I Forester on Subaru’s stand, and you can see that the Crosstrek has replaced that model [full disclosure: I just bought a new Crosstrek] in the brand’s expanding lineup. The Forester is compact SUV-sized, which is to say, like a Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, etc., and like those rivals has grown over the years. As for the design, well, you generally don’t buy from this brand for the styling, so much as the anti-styling.
—T.L.
MISS: Acura TLX 2.4 A-Spec
At its press conference, Acura mentioned that the V-6-powered TLX A-Spec was proving to be a big hit with younger and more affluent buyers, so they have decided to bring out a version of this car with the 2.4 liter engine. Er… guys… First, it’s the V-6 engine that makes this car. Second, why would affluent buyers opt for the cheaper engine? I can’t see this going well at all. Why not put the Accord’s 2.0T engine in the TLX? Now that would be an A-Spec to get excited about. Save us, RDX!
—A.G.
HIT—I hope: 2019 Acura RDX
The current RDX is, in my opinion, one of the better vehicles in Acura’s lineup; the fact that it’s an aging and fairly conservative design, both visually and mechanically, doesn’t say much about this lost-in-the-weeds brand. But the new RDX looks to be a ray of hope. With a longer-and-lower look than the current car, it’s attractive without being silly. The 2.0-liter turbo engine should prove to be just as much of a gem here as it is in the Accord (assumi from Performance Junk Blogger 6 https://ift.tt/2J5u7Sz via IFTTT

HIT: Cadillac CT6 refresh
Cadillac injected a good dose of Escala concept design language into the CT6’s facelift, while adding the CT6 VSport and the new twin-turbo V-8 options. I think it works.
The 2.0-liter turbo engine should prove to be just as much of a gem here as it is in the Accord (assumi from Performance Junk Blogger Feed 4 https://ift.tt/2J5u7Sz via IFTTT

The Forester is compact SUV-sized, which is to say, like a Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, etc., and like those rivals has grown over the years. As for the design, well, you generally don’t buy from this brand for the styling, so much as the anti-styling.

The current RDX is, in my opinion, one of the better vehicles in Acura’s lineup; the fact that it’s an aging and fairly conservative design, both visually and mechanically, doesn’t say much about this lost-in-the-weeds brand. 2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Changes, Specs and Engine
New Post has been published on https://www.2019hondausa.com/2020-honda-ridgeline-awd-changes-specs-engine/
2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Design
Feature
Our team claimed that its good taking care of withstood “thoughts and shoulder muscles above its unique rivals,” and journey plus dealing with continue to be powerful factors together with the new truck. On the skidpad, the Honda Ridgeline AWD‘s .80 g quickly addresses the business from mid-size selections up. Considerably more stiffly sprung than the Aviator, with 50 % from the individual revocation parts remodeled for pickup obligation, the Ridgeline supplies company however modest kicks above a lot of lumps– tire directing usually will go above, and in addition the tires’ substantial sidewalls (all variants use on 18-inches auto tires with 245/60 rubberized) acquire the advantage off of busted sidewalk. Also, there is basically not any of the agitating body shake you enter in a good deal of chooses up, as well as the taxi cab as nicely as the bed vacating sync with one other.
Interior and Exterior
Is really one particular place exactly where the Honda features just like a classic vehicle. Its very own 195-feet cease provided by 70 miles per hour was 10 feets a great deal much longer as compared to our very last final result for the Tacoma as nicely as a higher length liable for Colorado. Our team also considered a sleek brake pedal. The Ridgeline foliage the impact of dealing with a rigorous, strong actual body and without doubt, the Honda’s torsional tightness offers greater, even though the rear fenders are not any longer an essential stamping with the bedsides, even so, are at this time affixed as well as mounting bolts plus tacky. On the total, our team uncovered the Honda Ridgeline AWD in becoming a very satisfying driver, to the position that the company desired their own tighter structure to the gentler adjusting of its Sports Power Vehicle sibling or sibling, the Captain.
2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Interior
Its very own right now larger as properly as nonetheless clever bed attacks us as an edge, as nicely as their own haul rating from 1499 weight is just 91 weight resistant of the type-major GM autos and much better than Toyota’s as nicely as Nissan’s. When which comes time for you to problem up a trailers, nevertheless, the Honda uncovers its unique most significant lack of strength, in addition to the greatest pull rating of 5000 kilos, in contrast to Colorado may be prepared to drag 7000 excess weight, and each the Toyota plus the Nissan could pull more than 6000. You could pretty much pick up the vehicle folks snicker.
2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Engine
With the support of the improved VTEC method and new 6-velocity manual transmission, the new tune up mill ought to create 450 horse power and 420 lb-ft . of torque. All the versions of Ridgeline Type R will feature some of-tire travel, for much better grip as well as harmony the more potential of the engine. The velocity from to 60 miles per hour ought to be in under 5 mere seconds. The best velocity could possibly be near to 170 miles per hour. The regular gasoline ingestion is 21 mpg. This is very sensible remembering about the beefy character of the engine.
2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Specs
2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD Price and Release Date
The Honda Ridgeline Awd is definitely not minimal beyond doubt. It would most likely price very similar to the top-rated clip Black color Model. This simply means it will probably be near $43,100. Nonetheless, producing a parallel with the Civic Type R it may go even greater given that the price of the sports variation of Honda’s hatchback is $6,200 greater than the price of the normal model. When they choose to commence manufacturing of this sports pickup truck, Honda will be needing serious amounts of release it due to the fact they should spend money on a new design and discover the strategy to track up the engine. Therefore, it is actual to discover the new Ridgeline Type R reaching the street in 2020.
