Insomnia, ASD style

So the handy little thing about this Tumblr microblog is that while I try to keep it focused on anime, sometimes I just gotta rant about US politics or about personal stuff. I do have a dedicated anime blog from way back over on Typepad that is 100% Anime focused....and that I nearly never update because I try to save it for serious, essay-length posts.

Anway, I've had a rough night. Last night was bad. Tonight was worse. Last night I had a series of disconnected naps, back to back to back, at least with cool dreams & shit. Tonight I've just been unable to fall asleep period.

Things were so much simpler in my teens & 20s. Back then, jerking it to completion would knock me the f*ck out. It was the best natural sleep aid. At middle age with waning libido, it's a mixed blessing. Sometimes it works, other times not so much. It still feels great of course but it doesn't pack nearly the same knock out and sleep effect it used to. I did it twice tonight, to precious little avail. Still wide awake. I think one of the major problems of insomnia for ASD folks is just how hyper-aware we are of our own bodies. It's that much harder to find the "perfect" sleeping position. I rely on 12 hour Sudafed to clear my congestion in time to sleep...with varying rates of success. It definitely makes sleeping better, easier when I'm congestion free but it's not a cure-all. Plus the anxiety begins to creep in the closer dawn approaches. I've made it a habit to put a pair of boxers over the clock face on my digital clock radio so I don't know what time it is until the alarm goes off. It helps dampen anxiety but not enough tonight.

Also been having unwelcome thoughts about my Dad dying in hospital, in hospice care...how much he was suffering...they did their best, I know, and drugged him out of his mind...he was completely unconscious his last day, and that was a mercy for which I'm grateful. He might've beaten that Stage IV cancer but for that fatal surgical mistake that cost him his life first. He's been gone since 2019 and it still invades my thoughts....I ponder hypotheticals like what if we'd said no to the risky polyp-removal surgery and he'd made it to 2020 in time for the COVID19 pandemic with his COPD after years of smoking....how much more paranoid & careful we all would've had to have been even more than we were. I think how ironic it was he never got lung cancer but skin cancer instead. I speculate it was because he worked outside too much without sunscreen through the years, always working on his property up in Coldspring, Texas. He was just a very outdoorsy kind of man, really. Loved nature & hated people. Probably undiagnosed ASD until the day he died. He suffered a lot in life, never really fitting in, no real adult friends besides my mom. Mom had suggested to me once that Dad might be ASD too but at the time I was not prepared to hear that and was pretty dismissive. But over these past 10 years, I have come to accept he probably was. Dad had also wanted me to trade in my car for a truck which I thought a daft idea at the time but he was thinking long term, where I would be my mom's primary caretaker on down the line...and have a truck handy to haul stuff around for her if need be. He never put it that way directly but I think that's what he was thinking. I've been idly looking at new Toyota Tacomas, Nissan Frontiers, and Ford Rangers. I prefer Toyota out of all of them. The Honda Ridgeline is nice but hard to find and also too big and too expensive. I'm looking at a 2 door model vs. a 4 door for the Toyota/Nissan/Ford models. It rides smoothly and comfortably, especially on these fat off-road tires and shocks, but the body control over bumps is better than a Ford Ranger. It’s not as planted in corners as a modern pickup, so you’ll want to let off the gas on those long freeway flyover ramps where you might keep your foot down in a Chevy Colorado. It just feels a bit tippy in high-speed maneuvers.

The only real problem with the way it drives is its abysmal turning circle. On paper, it’s in the middle of the class, though closer to the bottom than the top. In a parking lot, it feels like turning a cruise ship thanks to a worst-in-class 20.4:1 steering ratio that takes 3.6 turns lock to lock. The wide turning circle or the slow steering alone could be manageable (witness the Tacoma, with the tightest circle and second-most turns lock to lock), but together, it feels like you’re cranking the wheel forever and still not making the turn. Slow as it may be, it’s got a nice trucky weight to it, and it’s as precise as any of its competitors.

The other issue is the interior noise, particularly on the highway. Designed for a day when it didn’t matter, the Frontier is noisy inside compared to today’s trucks. The only other truck this hard to talk over is the Jeep Gladiator, whose roof is meant to be removed. On the Gladiator scale, it’s about even volume-wise with the hardtop, not as loud as the soft top.

Picking at any of the Frontier’s other shortcomings, though, feels like bullying. Everyone knows the truck is old, and no one is pretending any different. It doesn’t offer as many luxury and convenience features as some competitors, and the infotainment system is old and small by today’s standards. The interior mostly looks the same as it did 12 years ago when they changed out the climate controls and nothing else, back when they should’ve dumped that hideous-looking steering wheel but didn’t.

No, the only shot I’ll take at the Frontier’s interior is at the new center console, a featureless slab of gray plastic devoid of any design. The console had to be replaced to accommodate the new shifter, but somehow in the process Nissan decided it would be a good idea to shrink or take away the storage bins and put the keyless ignition button down there for no apparent reason. Less storage space in a time when we carry more devices than ever makes no sense.

Give the aesthetics a pass, though, and the Frontier’s interior gets the job done fine. The front seat bottoms could be a little longer, but the seats are otherwise comfortable, and the back row has space for adults to sit comfortably. The tall seating position and low belt line make for big windows and a commanding view in every direction, a welcome design in an era of high belts and tiny windows.

This being a Pro-4X off-road model, it’s got a few extra parts that make it just as good as any mid-grade off-road package. It won’t keep up with a Gladiator Rubicon or a Colorado ZR2 Bison, but with a manually locking rear differential, Bilstein shocks, hill descent control, skid plates, and all-terrain tires, it’ll hang with a Ranger FX4, Colorado Z71, or Tacoma TRD Pro. I’ll cover its off-road prowess in-depth in an upcoming review.

In truth, there’s a simple honesty to the Frontier that’s refreshing. Take it for what it is, and it’s got everything you need and nothing you don’t. If you want more, you’re looking at the wrong truck. There are almost no frills here, just seat heaters and an upgraded stereo. It’s just a simple, solid truck.

Unfortunately, you really have to put a lot of stock in that simplicity. When Nissan was selling four-banger Frontiers starting at $20,000, it was a screaming deal. All the truck you need for thousands less than the other guys. But that’s gone now. Nissan still hasn’t released pricing on the 2020, but even if it stays exactly the same as the old V-6, it’s basically the same as a Ranger or V-6 Colorado and only a little cheaper than a V-6 Tacoma. Is Nissan willing to put more cash on the hood than the other guys? Maybe on the old trucks, but this new powertrain wasn’t free, so incentives may be less forthcoming. Either way, you’re getting a lot less stuff in your truck. The Catch-22 is, the old powertrain could at least claim proven reliability. This new one, we just don’t know yet.

Taken by itself, the 2020 Frontier is a good truck. It does everything a truck should do, it drives nicely, and it’s more powerful and efficient than ever. Those are all good things but curtailing the drivetrains has left it trying to compete against much newer and nicer trucks at the same price point. Normally, a lack of complicated options and features isn’t something you pay extra for unless it’s a Porsche, and this isn’t the Porsche of pickup trucks. Still, if you’re the kind to Marie Kondo the build sheet, the “new” Frontier merits a look on its strength of character alone.

The 2019 Ford Ranger Packs Plenty for the Price

It’s no secret that trucks have gotten uncomfortably expensive. While the memory of $30- and even $20,000 pickups remains fresh in their minds, most modern pickup-truck shoppers will be greeted at the dealership by bona fide luxe trucks. The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 that CarGurus recently reviewed cost more than $66,000, and a new Ford F-150 can crest $70,000 before you add a single option. With that in mind, we drove a 2019 Ford Ranger across four of New England’s six states to determine just how much value a midsize pickup can provide.

The Ranger Offers Ruggedness and Value

First and foremost, despite a $24,110 base price, the Ranger won’t always come cheap. Our test car rang in at $41,595. But that price bought us striking Lightning Blue paint, the FX4 off-road package, and a range of safety systems, including lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

That said, the Ranger XLT SuperCrew 4×4 we drove didn’t feel overly modern, either. Shoppers who want their truck to feel rugged and ready for work will love the new Ranger, but shoppers who prioritize comfort will tire of its enthusiastic but unpolished ride. After leaving the truck outdoors overnight in some of Maine’s famous single-digit weather, we woke to discover that the Ranger’s sliding rear window (part of the $2,800 Equipment Group 302A) rattled incessantly when the car was cold. It took roughly an hour of driving before the brittle-sounding frame holding the window warmed up enough to quiet down the ruckus.

The 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine delivered great power: 270 horses and 310 pound-feet of torque. The selectable 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system handled snow marvelously, and the Ranger felt as capable cruising along the highway as it did while trudging through rutted dirt roads. The 4-cylinder constantly roared under gentle acceleration, and it returned a mild 21.4 mpg across 653 (mostly) highway miles. That sort of performance didn’t wow us when we got to the gas pump, but it wasn’t too far off the EPA’s estimate of 20 mpg city, 24 highway, and 22 combined.

But an Even Better Option Is on the Way

Midsize pickups like the 2019 Ford Ranger and its primary competitors, the Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma, have become incredibly appealing for young, often urban-living, weekend warriors. They’re small enough to drive through a city but capable enough to load up with skis or bikes and take to the woods. Unfortunately, this segment has aged rapidly. The Colorado (and its corporate cousin, the GMC Canyon) debuted in 2015. The Tacoma was last updated in 2016. Even the Ranger, which arrived in the United States in 2019, has been on sale internationally since 2011 and was last refreshed in 2015.

Five years is a long time in the auto world, and that age shows, particularly inside these midsize pickups. The best-feeling option is likely the Honda Ridgeline, which can’t come close to the starting price of the better-selling Chevy, Ford, and Toyota.

Nissan is expected to reveal a refreshed Frontier in 2021 (the Frontier hasn’t been meaningfully updated for a whopping 15 years). Thankfully, competition breeds excellence, and we doubt Ford, Chevy, or Toyota will let Nissan run away with the segment. For now, the Ranger and the rest of the midsize pickup segment offer genuine usability and attractive prices. But if it were our decision, we’d hold out and see what the future brings.

The New Ram Dakota Midsize Truck Could Look Like This

Just a few years ago, the midsize-pickup-truck field was better suited to archaeologists than automotive enthusiasts, but now General Motors’ Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon doppelgängers share the road with Jeep’s Gladiator, the returned Ford Ranger, an updated Toyota Tacoma, and soon a Ram Dakota that might look something like this. Expected to arrive in 2020 for the 2021 model year, the new Ram Dakota midsize truck might be exactly what you expect—or it could yet hold some surprises.

Although details are still entirely speculative, some baseline expectations are likely to be met: a body-on-frame structure, a choice of gas or diesel V-6 or gas turbocharged four-cylinder engines, and a careful job of positioning around the Gladiator’s space in the market. That latter element might be the trickiest part of the Dakota’s development, as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles won’t want its two most profitable brands stepping on each other’s toes.

Given Jeep’s position as the off-roadiest brand in the FCA family, Ram should push the Dakota toward the more realistic, everyday uses most pickups actually get put to—think something more along the lines of Honda’s Ridgeline, minus the unibody construction and car-like driving demeanor. (Or, viewed from the other end, plus body-on-frame toughness and a satisfyingly truck-like driving demeanor.) FCA CEO Mike Manley has already stated the Gladiator and Dakota will have very different missions. To that end, the Ram is also likely to offer both single and quad cabs and both short and long boxes, where the Jeep is only available with four full doors and a short bed.

Threading the needle with the Dakota gets even harder when you consider the Ram Classic, the marque’s previous-gen pickup, is still on sale alongside the current Ram 1500. It will continue after the Dakota’s launch and was just updated to include a special-edition Warlock model.

Whatever the Dakota’s final form, it’s certain to meet a market recently repopulated with very strong competition. But given Ram’s distinctive styling, strong powertrain selection, and broad, often brand-loyal fan base among pickup buyers, we’re already stocking up on the popcorn.
