Former President Donald Trump blamed Democrats on Monday for the latest attempt on his life, saying their rhetoric about him being a “threat to democracy” motivated a gunman at his property in Florida. In the same breath, he used the same rhetoric against Democrats, describing them as an existential threat to the U.S.

“Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country, and they are the ones that are destroying the country — both from the inside and out,” Trump told Fox News Digital on Monday. Trump expanded on the sentiment in a post on his website. “The Rhetoric, Lies, as exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC Debate, and all of the ridiculous lawsuits specifically designed to inflict damage on Joe’s, then Kamala’s, Political Opponent, ME, has taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust,” Trump wrote. “Because of this Communist Left Rhetoric, the bullets are flying, and it will only get worse! Allowing millions of people, from places unknown, to INVADE and take over our Country, is an unpardonable sin.” Secret Service agents fired on a man seen wielding an assault rifle on Trump’s golf course in what authorities have described as an apparent assassination attempt against Trump. Trump was on the course at the time.

The second gunman, identified as Ryan Routh, a 58-year-old with an extensive criminal history, is now in police custody. Authorities haven’t described his motive, but social media accounts apparently connected to Routh suggest he once posted favorably of Trump in 2020 but in more recent years posted favorably about President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, according to The Associated Press. Democrats still describe Trump as a threat to Democracy but have emphasized that message less since Harris became the party’s presidential nominee. Instead, they have described Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), as “weird.”

Day Two - July 6, 2024

A long travel day over 2 days. I flew out of Waco to DFW at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 5, and waited for the rest of the group to meet me at the Flagship Lounge at DFW. Tim Ussery had to take a longer route to London, since he booked his flight later than us. We departed Dallas on time at 3:15 p.m. to London Heathrow for our 8.5 hour flight. Luckily, no hiccups in the air and we landed in London a little early (around 6:15 a.m.) on Saturday, July 6.d

Heathrow is not one of my favorite airports (see my blog from last year when Laura and I had to spend over 12 hours at this airport on our way to Italy), but this time, it was a fairly quick stay. We left Heathrow around 8:15 a.m. for our quick 1.5 hour flight to Glasgow. We arrived around 9:45 a.m. and were greeted by our golf host for the week, Joe Marshall, with Perry Golf Tours. The only small hiccup, my golf bag (and Gordon Robinson's golf bag) was apparently pulled from our flight, probably due to weight issues. That meant it wasn't going to arrive until later this evening.

This presented my first problem, as my golf bag didn't arrive at the Glasgow airport until 8:30 p.m. last night and the luggage area was closed. Our driver is supposed to get my bag this morning, but its arrival will be later this morning (July 7), after our tee time starts at 10 a.m. So, my first round will be without my clubs, my golf shoes, my putter (a very important club for me), my rainsuit, etc. I will be playing with a rental set and not looking forward to playing a challenging course like the Ailsa without my proper equipment.

Most of our golf group was smart and sent their clubs ahead last week to the hotel via Ship Sticks. I was not one of the smart ones.

After we arrvived at the Trump Turnberry Hotel, we felt like we were in Nirvana. The hotel sits high on the hill, over looking 36 hoes of links golf, the Firth of Clyde and Turnberry Bay. The views are incredible. The signature lighthouse looms majestically at the end of the bay.

Todd, Taylor and Tim (our under 45 age group) decided to get 18 holes in at the King Robert the Bruce course (the second 18 holes here). Johnny, Jim T and I decided to walk the 1.4 miles (2.8 r/t) to the lighthouse for the views. The weather was a little windy, but a perfeact 62 degrees. In fact, after we returned, I decided to make the roundrip walk twice (second time with Gordon).

After a round of afternoon drinks and a shower, we met for dinner at the 1906 Restaurant at the Hotel. The food, wine (of course) and conversation were great. I had a great Turbut fish dish. We enjoyed a 2020 Oliver Lefaive white burgundy wine from Puligney-Montrachet Les Meix and a 2017 Pomerol Bordeaux red from Chateau La Grave (Trigant de Boissert). Dinner plates on our table that were served included lamb chops, a beef filet, a duck breast and local fish. Several of us stayed up until around 10:30 p.m. having drinks in the bar and sharing stories with some groomsman and bridesmaides from a local wedding at the resort.

I accomplished my goal of staying awake (no naps, except for a little on the plane) for the first 36 hours to get my time clock set for the local Scotish time.

Tomorrow, the trip begins (albeit without my clubs and equipment for the first round) with our first golf round at the Ailsa Turberry Course. I wil report more tomorrow. Cheerio!

As an ardent fan who’s owned three GTIs over the last 15 years, few new car launches get me as excited as a new generation of the iconic hot hatch. The Mk8 2022 model ushers the GTI into a high-tech new era while retaining that raw, analogue driving feel intrinsic to its DNA.

Options like matrix LED headlights, a digital cockpit and driver assistance systems bring the GTI clearly into the 2020s. Yet a multi-function perforated leather wheel and trademark plaid seats keep that classic identity. More Power with Serious efficiency GTI fans care most about what’s under the hood, and the Mk8’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine adds 13 hp for a total 241 hp and 273 lb-ft torque - hugely usable grunt. My DSG test car hit 60mph in under 6 seconds thanks to that immediate shove, while delivering 34 mpg highway. And the optional performance exhaust pops and crackles just enough to satisfy when revved, without annoying the neighbors constantly. Balanced, Playful Handling Remains Core Strength Through sweeping curves of my favorite SoCal canyon routes, the GTI stayed planted and lively.
