SALON DE GENÈVE 2020 (VIRTUAL): TOP 10 OF THE CAR SHOW THAT DID NOT TAKE PLACE
Tumblr media
The Geneva Motor Show 2020 has been cancelled due to the coronavirus, taking the automotive world by surprise. The manufacturers, not wanting to be left behind, nevertheless went there for virtual presentations, in order not to lose the media coverage they had hoped for with the event. So here is what we practically missed at the Geneva Motor Show.
Our prize list is made up of models that struck our imagination and products that we are eagerly awaiting.
1 — Honda Jazz
Elsewhere in the world, the car known as the Fit takes the name Jazz. In Geneva, the new generation of the product was eagerly awaited. At first glance, the chip has a nice face. It will be delivered to the European continent from April onwards and will be powered by a hybrid engine, among other things.
Of course we’ll have to wait and see what Honda has in store for us, but let’s just say that our market is ripe for a new Fit.
2 — Volkswagen ID.4
The ID.4 will be Volkswagen’s first electric SUV. The manufacturer promises a range of up to 500 km. The vehicle will initially be offered in rear-wheel drive configuration, but an all-wheel drive version will be added at a later date.
On board, the presentation is entirely digital and interactions will be done mainly through touch-sensitive contacts and voice commands.
Although the ID.4 is described as a concept, the production version will not be much different from what was to be unveiled in Geneva.
3 — Bentley Bacalar
A car show is also a place where it is necessary to dream. At Bentley’s booth, it would have been possible to do so while admiring the Bacalar, a car that is entirely handmade and whose distribution will be limited to 12 copies. Of course, each one will be built according to the preferences and specificities of its buyer.
Aesthetically, the line of the model is spectacular and what is interesting is that it shows a slightly different design at the front, possibly a prelude to what we can expect from this manufacturer over the next few years.
Want one? Sorry, the 12 collector’s items are already reserved.
4 — Porsche 911 Turbo S
Nearly 18 months after the debut of the new generation 911, Porsche introduces the Turbo S version, both as a coupé or convertible approach. The latter will be powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder engine with 650 horsepower. Thanks to the eight-speed PDK transmission, specific to this variant, the fixed-roof variant will be able to erase the 0-97 km/h in just 2.7 seconds (0.1 second is added for the convertible).
In terms of styling, this Porsche 911 Turbo S offers wider tracks, improved aerodynamics and a more massive rear spoiler, among other things.
5 — BMW i4
BMW virtually presented its i4 electric sedan, a car that promises to shake things up in its class. Displaying a very aggressive face, the model is still at the concept stage, but the production version should not be too different.
Taking up the proportions of the 4-Series Gran Coupe, the i4 will offer 530 horsepower and a range that will certainly be between 450 and 475 kilometres at home, if we’re to believe the 600 kilometres announced with the European cycle.
6 — Hyundai Prophecy Concept
Hyundai’s Prophecy concept has been the talk of the town since its virtual presentation at the Geneva Motor Show. You can recognize a Saab signature (model 92) from the 1950s through it, but also from Porsche, Tatra and Tesla when you analyse the lines, especially the way the rear plunges towards the ground.
This electric concept is unlike anything else in the Hyundai stable, quite simply.
Inside, the minimalist interior is dominated by… the absence of a steering wheel, allowing for advanced independent driving features. The study is not expected to result in a production model, but some of its elements will certainly find their way into other Hyundai creations.
7 — Mercedes-Benz Classe E
The Mercedes-Class E is entitled to a mid-cycle upgrade this year. If the model is important here at home, it is all the more important in Europe, which explains the importance of this presentation at the Geneva Motor Show.
The first deliveries of this reworked version will take place towards the end of the summer. Essentially, we are talking about new headlights and lights, a redesigned grille and the introduction of second-generation safety systems. A plug-in hybrid variant will also be offered for the first time in North America.
8 — Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is already one of the most beautiful cars on the market. The GTA treatment it receives makes it even more spectacular. Broadly speaking, we are talking about a QV version with even more power, all accompanied by weight loss for incisive performance on the track. Carbon fibre is used for the arches, driveshaft, bonnet, roof and front bumper.
The model benefits from a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine derived from Ferrari. The latter develops up to 540 horsepower. There’s also a GTAm version, which offers the same power, but with a reduced weight of 440 pounds. Only 500 copies of the GTA and GTAm will be offered.
9 — Audi A3 Sportback
Models intended for the general public were also presented virtually. This is the case of the Sportback version of Audi’s A3.
The fourth-generation model is about to make its debut. It will in turn be equipped with the company’s Virtual Cockpit, featuring a 10.25-inch screen, plus a 10.1-inch touch screen for the multimedia system and navigation, among other things.
10 — McLaren 765LT
With the 765LT, McLaren offers us a car that is 176 pounds lighter than the 720S coupe. Weve innovated everywhere to reduce weight, even going so far as to equip the license plate holder and the outline of the window switches with carbon fiber. At the heart of the deal is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that offers, unsurprisingly, 765 horsepower. To reach 100 km/h, it’s just under 3 seconds. Truly, an exceptional car that causes torticollis.

2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe First Look: BMW Enters the Compact Sedan Game
BMW has finally taken the wraps off what will be the least expensive model in its U.S. lineup that isn’t an SUV, the 2020 2 Series Gran Coupe. Unlike the two-door 2 Series coupe and convertible, the four-door Gran Coupe rides on the same front-drive-based underpinnings as the X1 and X2; however, for the U.S., it will only come in all-wheel drive configuration. Two models will be offered: the 228i Gran Coupe xDrive and the potent M235i Gran Coupe xDrive.
If you look closely at its design, the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe borrows a lot of cues from the larger 4 Series Gran Coupe but scaled down. The front end appears to be plucked directly from the X2 and the rear features thin taillight clusters like the recently revealed X6. When you look at the 2 Series Gran Coupe from the side, its silhouette screams shrunken 6 Series Gran Turismo minus the hatch and with a lower roofline.
Inside, you have an evolution of BMW’s interior design, which first appeared on the BMW X5, X6, and 8 Series. BMW’s iDrive interface returns with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a virtual assistant. Navigation, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a head-up display are optional. Apple CarPlay requires an annual fee after the one-year trial period ends. A leatherette interior comes standard on the 228i, and the M235i gets real leather standard. Genuine cow hide upholstery is also an option on the 228i. Other options include ambient lighting, a digital gauge cluster, keyless entry, heated front seats, and parking sensors.
Powering the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is a 2.0-liter turbo-four in two states of tune: 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque in the 228i or 301 hp and 332 lb-ft in the M235i. Both variants come exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW says the 228i can sprint to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds flat, while the M235i can do the deed in as low as 4.6 seconds when the driver uses launch control and the engine goes into overboost. On models equipped with navigation, the transmission can use that data to shift more decisively and even downshift when approaching corners or slow-moving traffic.
To further distinguish the M235i from the 228i, it gets a standard Torsen limited-slip differential integrated into the transmission to help it put power down more effectively. The 228i makes do with a brake-based torque vectoring system that brakes the inside wheel to shift power over to the outside wheel. Standard on the M235i and part of the M Sport package on the 228i is the M Sport suspension, which lowers the car by 10mm and improves overall handling. An M Sport steering calibration is also added and BMW says it has a more direct ratio, better response, and adds power assistance based on vehicle speed and lateral acceleration. A front strut tower brace comes standard on the M235i for improved torsional rigidity. Both the 228i and M235i can also be had with two-mode adaptive dampers, Comfort or Sport. Models with the standard 17-inch or optional 18-inch wheels come with all-season tires, but opting for the 19-inch alloys gets you summer performance rubber.
BMW’s active driver assistant suite comes standard on the 2020 2 Series Gran Coupe and it includes lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control is available as a standalone option.
Earlier this year, we sampled the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe in prototype guise, and found that both variants had plenty of power. The 228i, however, rolled more compared to the M235i, and its eight-speed automatic was a bit lazy. Production starts in November 2019 with the car arriving in dealer showrooms in March 2020. Pricing should start under $40,000 for the 228i, but expect to pay a pretty penny for the more potent M235i.

2016 updates:
F97 X3M (G01 based) and F98 X4M (G02 based) are coming.
Just like Scott promised, no more wagons for this side of the pond. You want a Touring – grab an F31 while you still can. I have.
The next M5, X5M, and X6M will all get the same engine, S63B44T4. Note that the latest production iteration of this engine is T2. My best guess for the reasons for skipping T3 is that T3 did exist, but the engineers went further and made a still better version.
Production codes for the next 1 and 2: F40, F41, G42, G43, F44. I wonder why the coupe and the convertible are G while the rest are F…
Despite recent rumors, there will be an 8 GC. For starters, there will be the same 840i, 850i, and non-US 830d and 840d as with G14 and G15.
January 2017 The following comes from a new unverified source, so please don’t give it as much trust as to my previous reports. Still, to me it seems plausible, so worth posting.
EU 530i and 520d EffDyn will have a shorter production run than other G30s – up to 06/18. The assumption is they will be re-engined (this matches with the rumors of B48 TU coming out at G20 introduction).
Under the same assumption, 540i, M550i, and US 530i will be re-engined in 07/19. I find it interesting that US is again going to be one year behind EU with 4-cyl replacement.
530e will continue with the same engine/motor until at least 06/20.
G11/G12 LCI starts production in March 2019.
The next four items are repeated from previous leaks, but this is an independent source, and when two sources say the same thing, it can hardly be called a rumor anymore
F30 EOP is 10/18:
F31 EOP is 06/19 (if you want a new custom order BMW wagon, don’t delay past April 2019!)
F32 EOP is 06/20
F33 EOP is 10/20
F34 and F36 EOP now seems to be 07/20 (that is, F34 will have a longer than expected run, while F36 production will be cut short). This date is actually very unusual: BMW EOPs all its Germany-made models in February, June, or October. The best explanation I have is that their production will be moved from Dingolfing to Mexico.
F16 EOP is confirmed 07/19 (G06 SOP 08/19)
F48 EOP is 06/22
G30 EOP is 10/23, so it will have the customary 7 year run.
F60 EOP is 10/23
March 2017
M8: F91 Cab, F92 Coupe, F93 GC. Coming in 2019-2020.
F97 X3M will start production as a MY2020 vehicle (expect early 2019 intro) and will debut the S58 making 450hp+.
April 2017
It’s now confirmed that the US 30d models (G01 X3 30d and G20 330d) will in fact have the same engine as the European 20d models.
In future models, M Sport package will include a different exhaust system.
July 2017
Current EOP for G01 is November 2023, which means a shorter than usual 6 years and 4 months run. Both gas models will get TU engines in August 2019.
In a year or so the electric range of the i3 will be bumped to approximately double of the original version.
August 2017
Like X3M, F98 X4M is scheduled for MY2020, with market launch either simultaneous with F97, or a very short period of time apart.
M4 CS production will end no later than 06/19 (a full year before the scheduled EOP for the standard M4).
Now, something new to this series: future engine lineup. This is likely not comprehensive, but should still cover a lot of ground and give you a good idea of what to expect in the future. I believe the timeframe covered by this information is 3 years, maybe 4, so each statement below that says “will happen” or “won’t happen” should be read as “will/won’t happen in the next three years”. Also note the absence of any mention of hybrid or electric engines – I don’t have a good enough picture to talk about those.
B37 will not get any major updates in RWD models anytime soon. The transverse (FWD) version has a TU planned. No new versions are planned.
B38 will get TU for all existing versions (starting with the recently updated F48 sDrive18i), with the exception of the 1.2L one and the one that goes into i8. No new versions are planned.
B47 is simple: TU for all versions with the exception of longitudinal 16d (will be dropped?)
B48 is starting to get its first TU (now available in Europe in F48 sDrive20i). The TU version will soon find its way into more UKL models, and then we’ll see it in the CLAR cars, either with 07/18 “model upgrade measures” in G30, or at G20 intro. The only new version of this engine currently planned is the one that will go into UKL M35i, B48A20T1. The longitudinal versions will remain limited to 20i (B48B20M1) and 30i (B48B20O1).
B57 – TU for 30d and 40d, but not 50d.
B58 will get a TU (probably mid-2019), and with the TU will come a new version, B58B30O1. Note that up until now, all models, even the highest output X3 M40i, have been using the M0 version of this engine. O1 will probably take us even closer to 400hp.
N63 is currently in its third iteration (TU2), and there will be the fourth one (TU3) that will add two new versions, one below (M3) and one above (T3) of the current O2 (to be succeeded by O3). This actually looks somewhat illogical to me, since the future top version of B58 and the future bottom version of N63 should end up really close to each other in output. I suspect one of them may not actually happen.
N74 used in the brand new Phantom is actually one iteration ahead of the one in M760i (TU2 vs TU1) in addition to being bigger (6.8L vs 6.6L). M760i will catch up with its own TU2 soon, but there will also be something new, probably RR specific (Cullinan Black Badge?): N74B68M2.
S55 will not get a TU, but will be replaced by S58 (full name S58B30T0), as we already know.
S63 just got its newest upgrade in F90. It’s going to stick around for a while.
September 2017
B48TU in 30i vehicles will get a small power increase to 255hp. This is the engine G20 330i will come with.
Speaking of G20, it’s getting all the cool toys we’ve seen or only heard about. The same new instrument panel as the 8, special diff included with ZMP, ambient light, laser lights (even US cars), significantly improved autonomous driving capabilities, etc. A totally unexpected addition is remote engine start. But overall, interior quality and equipment are going to match or exceed the new X3.
S63 may get a small power bump in F95/F96 compared to F90. Really small.
F95 X5 M is confirmed as MY2020. 2019 is going to be very busy for M cars.
i3 with the 120Ah battery will be available in 2018 as a MY2019.
F44 2GC (2 Series Gran Coupe) is confirmed for the U.S.
G07 X7 is confirmed for (near-)simultaneous introduction with G05 in 2018. One interesting bit is that the top diesel model (non-US with the same old B57S) currently carries the M50d designation, with a bunch of M pieces as standard, while the top gas model is still xDrive50i, and the same M pieces are options. As widely reported, G07 will be very similar mechanically to G05, with the main differentiation in creature comforts and the 3rd row specific configuration: there will be 6- and 7-seat versions and climate control will have 5 independent zones (because having only four zones is so plebeian).
October 2017
Good news/bad news about G29. Good news: M40i will have power output at the upper end of our expectations (not very far from M2/S55). Bad news: I haven’t seen any G29s with a manual. sDrive30i will not surprise – same engine as G20 330i. Interesting colors are Misano Blue, San Francisco Red, and Frozen Grey II. And you’ll be able to build a Superman Z4 too. Mid-2018 market intro as previously established.
November 2017
Confirmed engine upgrades (B48TU, B58TU, N63TU3):
7/18 – non-US B48 G3x
11/18 – G20 intro with new B48 and B58
3/19 – G11/G12 LCI with all upgraded engines (BTW, 750i becomes xDrive only at that point)
7/19 – US B48 G3x and all B58 and N63 G3x
8/19 – all G01/G02
EOP for G32 is 6/24.
M2 CSL is a real thing.
Confirmed 300hp for B48A20T1 engine (X2 M35i, future M235i GC).
A more powerful hybrid powertrain is coming in 745e and X5 xDrive45e models.
G08 (X3 long base) is being considered for other countries besides China, including US/Canada.
F39 X2 M35i will be introduced in mid-2018 as a 2019 model. It will be the first model to use the new iteration of B48 engine producing approximately 300hp. Only automatic transmission will be available. The car will have the same bits offered on the already introduced X2 models equipped with M Sport package, adding LED lights as standard and special M Sport seats (not clear yet, if they’ll be standard or optional).
M340i details: same power as Z4 M40i (380hp or more), automatic only, M features: M Sport brakes, M diff, variable steering, M suspension (option 704 standard even with xDrive, adaptive suspension optional), M steering wheel, M exterior, rear spoiler, 19″ wheels. The rumored carbon roof was just a rumor. Interesting colors: Portimao Blue, Blue Ridge Mountain. And some bad news: it will be a delayed intro, so we won’t see it until Spring 2019 or later.
Regular readers will remember that I first reported about a weird 1.6L version of B48 a couple of years ago and couldn’t figure out what or why or when. Now we have the answer: it will be used in some models with 20i designation and will produce only 170hp. It will go into G20, G01, and later other models. Right now it seems that this engine is targeted primarily or exclusively at 3rd world markets.
December 2017
The target power output for S58, the engine to be used in M3/M4/X3M/X4M, is 475hp.
Comp pack will be available as an option on X3M/X4M, possibly right at SOP.
F91 (Conv) and F92 (Coupe) M8 begins production in 2019 as MY2020. The F90 drivetrain will carry over without changes, though there’s the possibility of a very slight power output increase on the US models. Comp pack will also be an available option at SOP.
There are now five different M cars that will come to market in 2019. This is madness.
G11/G12 LCI scheduled for early 2019 is mostly about putting together all the pieces I wrote about earlier: 750i goes up to 530hp with the new revision of N63, 740i goes up to 335hp with the new revision of B58, and the new 745e (replacing 740e) will make 390hp. Live Cockpit (all-digital instrument panel) will be standard and laser lights will be optional. The most interesting bit is that G11 could return to North America.
February 2018
Supra details: three engines (EU-only 195hp 20i, 255hp 30i, and 335hp 40i – and this means the 380hp Z4 M40i will be offered only by BMW and only in North America and a few other non-EU markets). Intro later this year, common sense suggests it will be simultaneous with Z4. It will be Toyota in name and body design only – everything inside the car is the same familiar BMW stuff: same options, same colors, same interior materials. Speaking of colors, it feels almost like a throwback to the 00s: Glacier Silver, Atacama Yellow, and Crimson Red are coming back, though there’ll also be a new matte gray. For the interior, you’ll be able to choose between fabric, alcantara, and leather, and (the gods have heard us!) all of these choices will be available in the U.S. Wheels: 17″ standard with 18″ and 19″ optional on 20i and 30i, 18″ standard and 19″ optional on 40i. 40i gets standard M sport diff, while on 30i it will be optional in something that BMW would call “ZMP”. Market positioning for the car seems to be distinctly lower than BMW, for example, the barebones 30i will have manual seat adjustments and no nav system. And, finally (cue the sad trombone): all models are automatic only.
April 2018
F40 M135i xDrive: I don’t usually write about non-US models, but I feel I should make an exception here since the US M235i GC will be virtually the same car in a different body. So, here’s what to expect: same engine as X2 M35i (300hp version of transverse B48), sport automatic only, xDrive only, M Sport configuration includes as standard: bodywork, suspension (non-adaptive), brakes, steering rack, 18″ wheels. Regular sport seats will be standard, with upgraded M Sport seats optional. As far as other options, pretty much anything you can add to a G20 will be available on F40 too (well, not rear wheel drive, of course). Still on track for 07/19 SOP.
May 2018
G15 840i RWD and xDrive (B58T, 335hp) will arrive in 2019 as MY2020.
G16 8GC will be introduced at the same time in 2019 with full model range: 840i RWD and xDrive, M850i, and non-US 840d.
G20 is confirmed to use a 48V electrical system.
G20 model list as it stands now (other models are possible, but no earlier than late 2019):
318d: non-US, B47, 148hp, manual and automatic, RWD.
320d: non-US, B47, 188hp, manual RWD, automatic RWD and xDrive.
330d: non-US, B57, 262hp, automatic RWD and xDrive (xDrive possibly delayed intro).
320i: non-US, B48 168hp 1.6L or 181hp 2.0L depending on the market, automatic RWD and xDrive (xDrive possibly delayed intro).
330i: all markets, B48, 255hp, automatic RWD and xDrive (non-US xDrive possibly delayed intro).
M340i: all markets, B58, 385hp, automatic RWD (US only) and xDrive, delayed intro.
330e: all markets, B48+electic motor, 248hp, automatic RWD and xDrive (xDrive US only), delayed intro, with US possibly having to wait longer than Europe.
F48 X1 LCI will arrive for MY2020. It will have the upgraded version of B48 (though same power output as before), some cosmetic changes, new wheels, infotainment update, and that’s about it – nothing major. M35i is not confirmed yet.
Regarding the rumors of M760i going away at LCI: not true, it will continue in all markets.
G01/G02 are confirmed for engine upgrades for MY2020. 30i remains at 248hp, M40i gets a bump to 385hp.
G05 X5 xDrive45e iPerformance (same 390hp powertrain that will be seen first in 745e LCI) will be available in 2019 for MY2020.
G06 will be released in mid-2019 for MY2020 with sDrive40i, xDrive40i, M50i. M50i will use the same version of N63 as just announced for M850i, producing 530hp. One interesting option that seems specific to G06 at the moment: “Iconic Glow Kidneys”. Because the poor owners of the previous X6 models have been suffering from not being visible enough on the road.
Both G05 X5 and G07 X7 xDrive50i will replace their launch version of N63 (456hp) with the same new 530hp engine and become X5/X7 M50i. Here’s finally your explanation why they were sticking with “xDrive50i”: “M50i” was reserved for the more powerful engine.
July 2018
It would be reasonable to expect the US-only M2 Racing (new Spec class?) to appear in early 2020 and the worldwide M2 CSL – in mid-2020 as MY2021, for a one year run.
MY2020 G30 530i and 540i and G32 640i will get the updated B46 (no change in output) and B58 (bumped to 335hp) engines as predicted previously, along with the new instrument panel as standard. M550i will move to the new 530hp N63.
F44 2GC will arrive in late 2019 as MY2020. The engines are the 228hp familiar from X1 and X2 and the 300hp we’ll soon see in X2.
July 2018 part deux
Funny enough, F94 X7M was (is?) under consideration.
G24 (next 3GT) has been canceled. Good riddance.
G26 will keep the hatchback. There are hints that it’s been delayed until 07/21.
At this time the only engine planned for G42 2er Coupe is B48.
I20 iNext will have at least two performance levels.
August 2018
G01 X3 and G02 X4 will be getting the new dash next year for MY2020. That’s also when we’ll see the hybrid X3 xDrive30e with the same motor as the upcoming G20 330e, uprated to 275hp.
US G05 X5 xDrive40d (aka 30d in all other countries) is somehow still alive for the release next year.
EOP for F34 and F36 has been moved to 06/21. The former is likely to compensate for the cancellation of G24 and the latter should be seen as evidence of the next 4GC needing extra development time so it can become a more interesting (unusual?) car than its predecessor.

2017 Los Angeles Auto Show Hits, Misses, & Revelations
LOS ANGELES, California—This year’s Automobility/L.A. Auto Show was much like the last couple of years, only more so. Which is to say that on paper, there were a number of significant reveals, led by Fiat Chrysler’s very important and very profitable JL Jeep Wrangler.
Still, at the end of the day, the 2017 L.A. Auto Show left us, at best, whelmed. Perhaps it’s because more and more, the auto show plays second-fiddle to the advanced technology that is the centerpiece of Automobility, which wraps discussion of autonomy and electric-powered vehicles around reveals of the shiny new cars and trucks.
If you attend the public Los Angeles Auto Show, December 1 to 10, you might see things a bit differently. Here’s what we saw this year…
HIT: JL Jeep Wrangler
It’s lighter by 200 pounds, it’s more easily convertible, and it is extremely Jeep. The all-new two-door and four-door 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL models will please the marque’s faithful and entice four-wheeling neophytes. The four-door has a power top that removes very quickly and easily, there’s an optional open-air pass-through in the middle of each front door, and the windshield folds down for the full open-air experience.
—Kara Snow
I’m no off-road outdoorsy type, but the latest iteration of this American classic makes me want to convert. As typical for Jeep, there are so many surprise-and-delight features that I can’t guarantee my introductory news story of the debut is comprehensive. Hardcore fans will love the new Wrangler’s interior spec plate, recalling the original Willys MB’s dash plate, the fold-down windshield and the door hinges stamped with the tool number needed to remove them. The masses who bought the first-generation Wrangler Unlimited will want to trade in for easy-to-lower tops and subtle refinement that doesn’t at all diminish its hard-core image.
—Todd Lassa
MISS: JL Jeep Wrangler pricing
Although Jeep promised to give us prices for the new JL models at the show, they weren’t ready to reveal just yet. Naturally, we’re fearing a big increase.
—K.S.
HIT: BMW i8 Roadster
There wasn’t a whole lot that BMW could do to make its i8 PHEV GT coupe cooler, but converting it into a roadster by ripping out the vestigial rear seats and dispensing with the fixed roof is a great way to do it.
—Kirill Ougarov
HIT: Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS
Its 2.5-liter turbo H-4 makes 365 hp, and top speed is 180 mph.
—Robert Cumberford
HIT: 2019 Lincoln Nautilus
The name may be a bit too dramatic for a fancy Ford Edge, but not only does the arrival of the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus signal the end of the brand’s confusing MK_ naming scheme (it’s the artist formerly known as the MKX, in case you’re one of the five people out there that could keep track), the midsize crossover wears the best interpretation of Lincoln’s current design language to date, suffering none of the proportional indignities of the Continental, Navigator, and MKC.
—K.O.
MISS: 2019 Lincoln MKC
The looks for the facelifted 2019 Lincoln MKC are a bit wonky, but that’s not the miss here. The miss is the missed opportunity to do away with the MKC name, as was done with the Nautilus, née MKX. This likely means that the Ford Edge-based compact crossover will be the last Lincoln to get a proper name.
—K.O.
MISS: Volvo XC40
I just can’t warm up to the new compact Volvo SUV. It looks short, stubby, and inelegant compared with the longer, nicely proportioned XC90, which I think is still the best SUV in its class. Though the interior is appropriately premium and well-designed, with excellent fit and finish, from the outside, the Volvo looks no more upscale than the Nissan Kicks.
—T.L.
REVELATION: Subscription is the new lease
This week at the L.A. show, Volvo announced its new “Care By Volvo” plan, a “subscription” program that it is rolling out nationwide on its consumer Web site volvocars.com/us, starting with its new XC40 compact crossover. The concept is simple, you choose either a Momentum or R-Design trim XC40 that you can configure, and everything else is covered: insurance, maintenance, payment, down payment, etc., and they deliver the car to you—no dealer required. The term starts at 24 months, but you can switch cars in as little as 12 months if you like. Mileage is capped at 15,000 a year. All for $600 a month to start. There is some fine print, namely around insurance (Liberty Mutual is the partner) and it’s fun to hear Volvo Cars global CEO, Hakan Samuelsson, and newly minted Volvo Car USA CEO, Anders Gustafsson, use the word “lease” a couple of times as they did in describing the program to me.
—Mike Floyd
HIT: Reds a.k.a CHTC Redspace
Chris Bangle is thinking inside the box for a change. Reds is one of the most refreshing concepts to emerge in a long time. It’s not made for Americans and most folks will hate it, but I love its childish, Toontown looks and the idea of a car that’s designed from the inside out—definitely next level stuff. A woman at the show told Bangle it was beautiful and he was taken back—he doesn’t think it is but appreciated the comment. Beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder.
—Ed Tahaney
MISS: CHTC Redspace
It lacks charm, beauty, grace… most of the attributes we tend to seek in cars, but the Redspace city vehicle is the most interesting device in the L.A. Auto Show, apparently all about maximizing interior volume to enhance comfort while its occupants are stuck in traffic, which is estimated to be about 90-percent of the time the thing is in operation, at least in such target-market cities as Beijing. Chris Bangle’s return to car design shows us why he should have foregone the opportunity. Dreadful object. Not a car, a street fixture. Most massive A-pillar ever.
—R.C.
REVELATION: CHTC Redspace is an appliance
It looks like a huge, rolling coffee grinder. That’s not necessarily a criticism; I love coffee.
—T.L.
HIT: Volkswagen I.D. Crozz EV Crossover Concept
Volkswagen’s autonomous I.D. concept looks like a cloud with wheels. And although it’s just a concept, it’s easy to believe a ride in this all-electric vehicle would be as silent as a fluffy altocumulus. Big points for the airy, spacious interior (although it’s 6 inches shorter than the Golf) with futuristic seats, a panoramic full-glass roof, and a steering wheel that folds forward into the dash when the driver isn’t needed. Look for it in 2020.
—K.S.
HIT: Jaguar’s show stand
Jaguar pointed its upcoming i-Pace electric SUV and related spec series electric racer, parked in parallel, straight at the Tesla Model 3 on its stand across the aisle. The Jaguar i-Pace is scheduled to go on sale late next year. Wonder, which EV will reach full production first.
—T.L.
MISS: 2018 Chrysler 300
Seems to have lost all the charm it once possessed. Too bad. This nth reskin of an ancient Mercedes chassis was costly.
—R.C.
REVELATION: The Multilink from Infiniti’s Variable Compression Engine
On the surface, Infiniti’s sculpted QX50 has been received as a design hit. But beneath the crossover’s wavy sheetmetal is a deeper story: the world’s first series production variable compression ratio engine. Christian Meunier, Infiniti’s VP Global Marketing and Sales, shared his thoughts with Automobile on the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine’s unique bits, which he compared to “parts of a Swiss watch” while flashing an elegant Jaeger-LeCoutre Reverso on his wrist. Case in point: the palm-sized multilink component, which serves as the lynchpin for altering piston clearance and varying the compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1. “The manufacturing tolerance on it is greater than anything we’ve ever done,” he explains. “It’s one thing to produce it, and another to mass produce it.” While the QX50 on display drew the attention of onloookers, this small hunk of steel tells the arguably more intriguing story of the 20-year struggle to bring a variable compression ratio engine to market.
—Basem Wasef
HIT: Kia lineup
Kia is a surprise to me. Stinger is quite good looking, and Kia’s number-one rating in initial quality is excellent. Obviously European stylists have made a major contribution to the current status of the make.
—R.C.
MISS: Toyota FT-AC concept
I really wanted to like it and make it a “hit.” But I find it an overdrawn take on the new Subaru Crosstrek. Toyota’s Jack Hollis describes it as a crossover, though it has torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive with front and rear lockers. It’s a tweener, size-wise, bigger than a RAV4, but not quite a mid-size vehicle. One of its best features is a built-in rear-bumper bike rack that can accommodate just one bike, though it isn’t any different from this SUV-concept trope we’ve seen at auto shows for years. Plus, the rack is probably three-times the weight of the Specialized mountain bike attached to it. Meanwhile, there are huge, 20-inch tires mostly filling large Crosstrek-style black plastic overfenders, though these overfenders extend out from the bodywork, which doesn’t seem very aerodynamic. While Toyota hints the FT-AC is headed for production, the concept doesn’t have an interior. Toyota’s TJ Cruiser at October’s Tokyo Motor Show came with an innovative interior, and though bigger, boxier and more minivan-like, that concept was one of my hits.
—T.L.
REVELATION: Land Rover’s 1 Percenter Drafting
The likes of Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Lamborghini are making it a lot less lonely at the top of the SUV pyramid, but you needn’t shed a tear for O.G. luxury offroad manufacturer Land Rover. “You wouldn’t have bought a Range Rover for more than £90,000 ten years ago; now, we sell quite a lot of £160,000, £170,000 Range Rovers,” Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicles Operations boss John Edwards told Automobile. “Customers are coming to us and spending another £30,000 on top of that bespoking them. We’ll do probably 250 bespoke cars this year.” Can we expect a new Super SUV from Land Rover to play with the (even bigger) boys? Edwards was mum on future product, but emphasized that competition has made business better than ever. “People always used to tell me, particularly when Bentley was going to be introducing an SUV, ‘You must be really nervous, this is terrible news.’ I’d say, ‘This is fantastic news because it’s going to grow the market; I’m very respectful of Bentley but what they’ve done is expanded the marketplace and provided us with an opportunity. Our business has benefitted massively from that marketplace growing. It is crowded and becoming more crowded, but it’s becoming stronger.”
—B.W.
HIT: Sonders electric three-wheeler
This is probably another pipe dream, but it’s really well styled, very professional, has a believable layout (unlike tandem two-seaters) and could work. But the $10,000 price? That’s a pipe dream.
—R.C.
MISS: Ampere 1 three-wheel electric sports car
A very crude prototype that should never have been presented in public. “With a range of up to 100 miles.” Yeah, sure.
—R.C.
HIT: Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
With their overwrought side surfacing, the first- and second-generation Mercedes CLS-Classes looked especially awkward where the rear haunches met the rakish four-door “coupe” profile. The new CLS, like the E-Class on which is based, has a much cleaner profile, resolving the issue. And now there’s room for three, not two, in the back seat.
—T.L.
HIT: 2019 Subaru Ascent
The last time Subaru tried to make a three-row SUV, things didn’t work out too well—but the less said about the bygone Tribeca, the better. The automaker did a good job of scaling up its current design language for the Ascent, which looks like a meatier Outback. Now, Subaru owners with growing families will no longer be forced to look elsewhere, so Subaru’s absurd streak of increasing sales for 71 months in a row is nearly certain to continue.
—K.O.
Hit? More like a home run for Subaru.
—E.T.
REVELATION – Mercedes-Benz’s (Inscrutable) 48 Volt Inline-6 Engine
Mercedes-Benz’s arc-shaped CLS has long been considered the sleeker (and less functional) cousin to the workaday E-Class. But the CLS 450 unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show packs a secret weapon that should appeal to anyone with an appreciation for mechanical elegance: Daimler’s latest, greatest, 48-volt-equipped inline-6 powerplant. I was smitten by the mild hybrid engine’s smooth power and imperceptible start/stop action during our first drive of a Europe-only S-Class. Using an integrated starter/generator, the powerplant produces a baseline of 362 hp and 369 lb-ft, adding another 21 hp and 184 lb-ft when electric assistance (aka, EQ Boost) kicks in. But how will Benz pull in non-techy, design focused consumers towards the advanced powertrain? I posed the question to Dietmar Exler, Mercedes-Benz USA’s president and CEO, who answered, “We have to find a way to communicate what the technology really does. When you ask a non-gearhead ‘What’s a Hemi engine?’ I’ll bet you 90 percent of consumers don’t know about hemispheric combustion chambers. But they all know it means more power.” Until Mercedes comes up with a one-word answer to that marketing conundrum, I’ll say this: driving is believing.
—B.W.
HIT: Ram pickup and Chevrolet Silverado High Country backup cameras
If you’ve ever towed a trailer or had a payload in the back of your truck that necessitated leaving the tailgate down, you know how that ordinary backup cameras can be useless. That’s why it was good to see on display with Ram and Chevrolet some well-developed trailering camera systems. The Silverado High Country on the show floor featured a standard three-camera trailering system by EchoMaster. Cameras on each side mirror activate with the turn signals and display on the infotainment screen. There’s also a wireless backup camera to place on the back of your trailer. Options include a front camera kit, a second wireless camera, and a third brakelight camera kit.
—K.S.
HIT: Bollinger Motors B 1
Stupidly primitive as is its styling, it’s full of interesting ideas on storage in an electric 4X4. And like the original Land Rover, it should be easy to repair.
—R.C.
REVELATION: Reports of the death of the conventional car are greatly exaggerated
For the last few years, the Los Angeles auto show had largely focused on green cars, with some self-driving car chatter thrown in for good measure. That went out the window this year despite increasing proclamations about the looming deaths of the internal combustion engine and the human-driven automobile. Instead, we were treated to hot convertibles, brawny sedans, and gas-chugging SUVs, none of which have any plans on driving themselves. Maybe we should focus on improving driver training after all.
—K.O.
HIT: JL Jeep Wrangler press kit
For at least 20 years, Chrysler/DaimlerChrysler/Chrysler Group/Fiat Chrysler has created the best traditional press kits, even as everyone else migrated to thumb drives, then to special websites. A thick booklet describing all the myriad features of the new Jeep Wrangler comes in a wood-and-brass box, with a brass-colored thumb drive and a Jeep grille-theme mini-speaker. You can probably find them offered up on eBay, but not from me. I’m keeping mine.
—T.L.
REVELATION: Mitsubishi Mirage hatch is cute
…but not too impressive on fuel mileage.
—R.C.
HIT: Dodge Durango SRT
Dodge agrees with those of us who believe SUVs can be slow, boring blah-mobiles. Just because you need a seven-seater doesn’t mean you don’t want a little power. That’s why they stuck a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 in the new Durango SRT with 475 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque and—get this—a 0-60-mph time of 4.4 seconds. Pile all of your friends into the luxe interior of this beast and show them that bigger is indeed better. But where is our Durango Demon?
—K.S.
REVELATION: Car magazines can’t wait to write the first-drive headline, “Nissan Kicks Ass”
There. We’ve done it already.
—T.L.

—T.L.
