Les sièges baquets avant de ce Lexus incluent plusieurs ajustements dont la pompe lombaire et ils peuvent être confortables lors d’une longue randonnée…jusqu’à un certain point. Car, c’est à cela que m’a servi le GX 460 et j’ai trouvé le coussin du siège du conducteur plutôt dur. Toutefois, les sièges du centre (qui sont légèrement relevés pour une bonne visibilité extérieure) présentent un coussin encore plus dur qui pourrait devenir inconfortables sur une longue distance. Enfin, les deux dernières places de la troisième rangée tout à l’arrière ne sont vraiment pas faites pour de longues distances ni pour de grandes personnes. Et il faut vraiment faire de l’acrobatie pour les atteindre. Oui, le GX 460 est à sept passagers mais je dirais plutôt que c’est un 5 + 2 car ces dernières places ne sont que des sièges d’appoint.

Si l’on regarde aux capacités de chargement de ce VUS, je dirais qu’elles sont limitées. Au départ, on ne peut pas dire que l’espace cargo est caverneux, loin de là. Il saura être pratique si l’on rabat les dossiers des places tout à l’arrière. Mais si ceux-ci sont relevés, l’utilisateur ne pourra pas profiter d’un grand espace puisqu’il reste à peine quelques centimètres de plancher disponibles, à peine de quoi y placer deux minces valises debout. Mon véhicule d’essai avait une toile cache-bagages pour l’arrière mais on ne sait plus où la ranger si l’on utilise la troisième rangée de sièges! Et le seuil de chargement est passablement élevé…

Toutefois, la finition intérieure est impeccable et le choix des matériaux est agréable au toucher. On y reconnaît un travail supérieur à bien des véhicules de la concurrence. Il n’y a que la toile coulissante du toit ouvrant en verre que j’ai trouvée «cheap». On dirait que c’est un simple morceau de carton recouvert de tissu que l’on doit tirer ou repousser…à la main (ce qui est devenu rare sur les véhicules de luxe de ce créneau!).

Si l’on s’arrête aux spécifications mécaniques, on constate que sous le capot se cache (littéralement) un moteur V8 (atmosphérique) à essence de 4,6 litres à double arbre à cames en tête qui développe à peine 301 chevaux et 329 li-pi de couple ce qui suffit à déplacer la grande caisse de ce Lexus mais qui peut souffrir un peu en performances vu le poids élevé du véhicule (plus de 5100 livres). Disons que ce n’est pas un moteur très récent. Mais, avec sa boîte à six rapports (les véhicules de la concurrence peuvent avoir de sept à dix rapports) et sa traction intégrale, il est quand même capable de tirer une remorque allant jusqu’à 6500 livres. Incidemment, Lexus recommande l’essence Super pour ce V8 alors que le réservoir d’essence ne contient pas beaucoup de carburant (72 litres ce qui donne à ce VUS une autonomie qui tournera autour des 500 km si les déplacements sont sur autoroute).

La direction est à crémaillère alors que le freinage se fait par quatre disques. La suspension avant est indépendante alors qu’à l’arrière, Lexus a conservé le pont rigide original du 4Runner. Mon véhicule d’essai avait la suspension arrière pneumatique optionnelle. Ce GX 460 était chaussé de pneus toutes saisons Dunlop (de fabrication japonaise sous l’égide de Sumitomo) qui étaient certes plus appropriés à la conduite sur pavé qu’aux excursions hors-route.

Sur la route

J’ai donc utilisé ce GX 460 pour un voyage de Laval à Amos au nord du Québec. Cela voulait dire beaucoup d’autoroute et de routes plus ou moins secondaires. Cela voulait dire aussi des heures au volant d’une camionnette d’ancienne génération mais adaptée pour aujourd’hui.

Première constatation, le véhicule n’est pas un «foudre de guerre». Ses accélérations sont honnêtes mais il lui faudra de huit à neuf secondes pour atteindre la vitesse de croisière permise, soit 100 km/h. De plus, pour dépasser, les reprises sont bonnes mais elles peuvent être un peu laborieuses si la route est en pente ascendante.  Toutefois, en vitesse de croisière, on y constate un silence et une douceur de roulement difficiles à trouver sur d’autres véhicules. Lorsqu’il roule avec le régulateur de vitesse adaptatif, la boîte de vitesses rétrograde souvent dans les pentes ascendantes.

Cependant, en ce qui a trait à la tenue de route, il faut se souvenir que l’on est au volant d’une camionnette…et d’une camionnette de conception un peu ancienne. La direction est légèrement floue et nécessite de la correction au fur et à mesure que la route se présente. Ce Lexus a droit à trois types de fermeté de suspension soit la version de grand confort (ce qui peut être agréable en situation urbaine), régulière (celle que j’ai utilisée pour mon long voyage) et «sport» qui se veut plus ferme mais que je ne considère pas nécessaire à moins de vouloir «brasser» cette grande caisse ce qui ne devrait pas apporter grand satisfaction au «pilote». Il y a aussi une commande pour les déplacements hors-route du véhicule, ce à quoi je reviendrai plus loin. Autrement, sur une longue route, le Lexus GX 460 est un compagnon de voyage agréable qui procure à la fois douceur et silence de roulement dans un confort remarquable avec une visibilité appréciable (sauf pour la vue arrière si la dernière banquette est en place et que les appuie-tête sont relevés).

Mais, pourquoi voudrait-on en faire un véhicule hors-route agressif? Je me le demande, surtout lorsqu’il est livré avec des pneus plus destinés à de longs voyages qu’à des excursions hors-route, aussi limitées soient-elles? C’est à quoi sert cette commande de choix de motricité hors-route à la console…Mes excursions hors-route se sont limitées à des déplacements sur route de gravier et sentiers privés peu exigeants. Évidemment que la traction intégrale serait des plus appréciées en hiver avec les pneus appropriés. En situation urbaine, le GX 460 peut sembler un peu encombrant mais avec des dimensions quand même raisonnables ce qui le rend relativement facile à garer. Il y a même une caméra que l’on peut mettre en action dans la calandre pour vérifier ses distances.

Si la consommation peut sembler un peu élevée en ville, sur une longue distance, le V8 n’est certes pas si gourmand. Pour un voyage où j’ai accumulé plus de 1000 km, j’ai obtenu une moyenne de 10,88 l./100 km alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait …10,9 !

En ce qui a trait au prix, celui du GX 460 ressemble à ceux des véhicules de la concurrence dont les Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8, Lincoln Aviator et ainsi de suite. Le prix de base est de 75 950 $. Les options du groupe Exécutif qui équipaient mon véhicule d’essai incluaient des rétroviseurs électrochromiques, une glacière au bloc central avant, le système de divertissement arrière, la caméra dans la calandre, le refroidisseur de liquide de transmission et autres qui ajoutaient 6000 $ à la facture Toyota ajoute quelques petits autres écofrais dont celui de la taxe fédérale de 100 $ pour la climatisation et les 2075 $ de transport et préparation pour un grand total de 84 156, 41 $ !

S’il est vrai que le Lexus GX 460 conserve une ligne un peu «rétro», je suis sûr que le grand VUS saura attirer des amateurs de la marque qui veulent bien lui reconnaître de nombreuses qualités de finition, de fiabilité et de robustesse. Mais je ne suis pas certain qu’ils le choisiront comme véhicule tout terrain. Après tout, risquer d’endommager une camionnette de ce prix, ne serait-ce que par des branches d’arbre s’y frottant! Mais, quand même, le GX 460 ne passera pas inaperçu…

Et pourquoi pas l’Abitibi ?

Cette période de pandémie aura changé le choix des Québécois qui aiment voyager en été. Plusieurs d’entre eux auraient peut-être choisi les routes du sud, les plages des côtes américaines des États-Unis, voire même plus au sud encore. Cette année, il est presque interdit de traverser les frontières. Donc, nos amis automobilistes auront choisi des destinations québécoises que je qualifierais de «traditionnelles», Québec, la Gaspésie, peut-être la Mauricie ou les Cantons de l’Est. Par contre, on entend rarement parler de l’Abitibi ! Pourtant, il y a tellement à voir et à faire dans cette région de notre province!

Comme mentionné dans ma description du Lexus GX 460, je me suis dirigé de Laval vers Amos en Abitibi. Pour m’y rendre, j’ai d’abord pris l’Autoroute des Laurentides (la route 15) jusqu’à ce qu’elle se transforme en route provinciale 117. J’ai donc passé au travers Tremblant, Labelle, Lac Saguay (où il y a un superbe arrêt où pique-niquer sur le bord d’une petite rivière), Mont-Laurier (un peu plus achalandé que je croyais), Grand-Remous et surtout le grand parc provincial de La Vérendrye, une superbe route d’environ une heure trente qui traverse un incroyable région boisée sauvage parsemée de lacs (avec quelques arrêts pour y casser la croute) qui nous mène finalement à la région de Val d’Or (avec son paysage minier unique). De là, j’ai quitté la 117 pour prendre la 111 vers Amos (attention, il faut ralentir dans les petits villages!) où le visiteur prendra connaissance d’une région spéciale plus axée vers les sports extérieurs malgré ses attractions intéressantes.

La ville d’Amos n’est pas des plus grandes de la province mais elle a ses caractéristiques dont la rivière Harricana sur laquelle on peut naviguer, une cathédrale unique au Québec, un centre-ville intriguant avec plusieurs restaurants et quelques hôtels très bien tenus (dont l’Amosphère que j’affectionne personnellement). Évidemment, on ne peut passer sous silence le fameux Refuge Pageau, une sorte de mini-zoo qui demande presque deux heures de visite et où l’on verra des animaux sauvages non pas en captivité mais hébergés car la plupart ont déjà été blessés ou abandonnés tout jeune!

Les amateurs de plein-air aimeront cette région pour ses activités sur l’eau (apportez votre canne à pêche) ou dans la forêt. Il y a même des endroits de camping organisé ou sauvage. Donc, voilà une suggestion intéressante qui devrait vous donner un peu plus de goût de l’aventure dans notre propre province !
